Identification of insect pest…..

Almost certainly the aptly named confused flour beetle ( tribolium confusum ) or one of its closely related cousins, generally they arrive in contaminated grain products  purchased from the shops, getting rid is usually achieved by disposal of the contaminated grain products and to be on the safe side also any other grain and rice products in your cupboard.

A good guess for your moth would be one of the over 4000 species of filter fly’s (Psychodidae) that live and breed down plug holes and drains, getting rid involves cleaning said plug holes and drains ( the bit just above the waterline is the important area). hot soapy water generally does the trick the water needs to have some washing up liquid in it as these critters are water proof.

Well trained, friendly cat…..

Do you need a well trained, very friendly cat for 6 months to one year only to keep you company? A local lad, friend of our son, who has a beautiful, well trained, 4 year old cat, very friendly, affectionate and playful (4 years old) and a good companion, needs someone to look after her for a year, as he has had to go to the UK to find work.  We desperately need a home for her while he is there.  If you are here for a year, maybe renting, would you like to have her as your companion for the time you are here? We urgently need fosterers for 6 small  puppies abandoned in a box in . They are now around 7 weeks old. They have all found permanent homes in Belgium, but they cannot travel until December 8th.

What’s on- The 4th La Herradura Sea Festival

The Festival takes place this year on 7th and 8th October. The theme is La Mar de Vida -tan cerca , tan fragil and that theme of fragility and the response of the people of the village of La Herradura to the marine challenges in this area will be echoed throughout the two day festival.  Most of the activity will be centered in the area of the beach close to the Marinero statue/proteccion civil so that everyone will be easily able to join in.

Day one will have as its focus the children of the village, in particular the primary school children from Las Gaviotas as they learn through play and edutainment about becoming ‘future guardians of the sea’. Their parade starts at the school Las Gaviotas at 9.30 on 7th. Watch out for the gorgeous masks they will be wearing and the float with mermaids and mermen. They will visit the wonderful children’s photo exhibition  in the Centro Civico and then proceed to a circuit of workshops on many aspects of sea life echoing the theme of this year’s festival. A special song has been composed for the children this year.

Saturday 8th October starts with some great opportunities to introduce yourself to sea activities with trying out breathing under water with diving equipment and short catamaran trips.

You need to email inscripcionesfmar @ gmail.com to register for these in advance. The Asociación Amigos del Mar will have an information booth on the beach.

There will be plenty of fun for all the family with a set of stalls and games all sea themed plus a quiz during the paella lunch with lots of great local musicians playing throughout the afternoon. The action starts around 12 on the beach.

Don’t miss this year’s festival. It’s part of the blueprint for developing a place of marine excellence.

Can Anyone Help Me To Identify These Unwanted Intruders.

We returned to our apartment in Nerja last week after having been in the UK since June.When we opened the food cupboards we found lots of these tiny black insects who, despite flour and sugar being kept in what we thought were airtight jars,had got in and were very active.These two in the photo were found in the bottom of the freezer!.Before we left in June we sprayed with moth killer insecticide,as we had found a number of very small moths on the kitchen.Whether these two events are related,I do not know.If anyone can help identify these insects and indeed recommend how to get rid of them,we would be very much obliged.

Saturday 15th October. Coach Excursion to ´Fiddler on the Roof´ Salon Varieties. Lux mundi, Torre del Mar invite you and your friends to join them on a coach excursion to see the famous musical with music by Jerry Bock,   lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joseph Stein, set in the Pale of Settlement of Imperial Russia in 1905. It is based on Tevye and his Daughters (or Tevye the Dairyman) and other tales by Sholem Aleichem. The story centres on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon the family’s lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, who wish to marry for love – each one’s choice of a husband moves further away from the customs of his faith – and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.  The coach will arrive in Fuengirola at approximately 18.00 and there will be free timed for you to have a meal.  The show starts at 20.00. Ticket price 28 Euros available at the Centre, this includes coach, tickets and insurance.  All proceeds to fund raising.  Departure times Viñuela (Football pitch) 16.30, Algarrobo 16.50, Caleta (Vets) 16.55, Torre del Mar (Coach station) 17.00.

Thursday 20th October.  Coach excursion to Gibraltar.  Why not join Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar and visit Gibraltar, a chance to take a cable car to the top of the Rock, see the unique Barbary Apes.  Visit the upper Rock Nature Reserve, where you will find the HistoricTunnels dating from 1779-1783 and St. Michael´s Cave.  Both of these have guided tours.  In the town can be seen the Gibraltar Museum, Government House and in the southern area are key historical sites. All information may be obtained from the tourist office, or an excellent alternative way of seeing the sights is by hiring a taxi, whose drivers are very knowledgeable and will explain the interesting, historical life of the Rock.  It is also an opportunity to purchase duty free Items and typical English items of food, etc. from the Morrisons super market. Ticket price 12 Euros available at the Centre.  Proceeds for fund raising.  Departure times Puente don Manuel (Hotel Romero) 6.45, Algarrobo (Lidl) 7.15, Caleta (Vets)7.20 and Torre Del Mar (Bus Station) 7.30. We will look at basic bread making techniques, including sourdough bread and how to make the loaf that suits you so you get to choose your flour, spelt, wheat or rye, and whether you prefer brown or white.

What’s On Visit to Rute

The Phoenix Club is off on Friday 25th November 2016 to visit Rute, an inland village in the province of Cordoba.  It is a lovely drive and once there we will visit their chocolate and biscuit factory and ooh and ahh at their famous Belen made entirely of chocolate.  In the afternoon we will pop into the Anise Museum where we will be able to sample their wares and buy a bottle or two for Christmas.

Rute’s primary economy centres on the extensive production of foodstuffs including dozens of different makes of Anis and traditional Spanish hams.

Rute comes from the word “Ruta” or “Route” in English. A route that Spanish soldiers followed when they were going to conquest Granada was the beginning of Rute. Later, the first “anis” factory was opened. Because of this, more factories were opened and this municipality became one of the most important makers of anis for over the world. Today, most of these factories are still open and a lot of people go to Rute at Christmas for the sweets that are made there.

iPhone 5 Problem

Can anyone help sort out a problem I am having with an iPhone 5 I have inherited?  I was reliably informed that the phone was unlocked and would take any SIM card, however on inserting a brand new nano card with HITS network it gives me the message, “the SIM card you currently have installed is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server”.  It then goes on to say I should insert another SIM card or request that this iPhone be unlocked, but I know it has been used in the UK with at least 2 different SIM cards from different networks successfully.

What’s on – Yoga Classes, Torrox Pueblo

There are 3 yoga classes weekly in the Pensionistas club (above the indoor market in the main Plaza) Torrox Pueblo. A “gentle” one ( ie just with a chair –  no lying -down exercises) FREE at 11.15 Mondays, followed by “normal” class for 3 euros. Another “normal” class on Thursdays at 12.00 also 3 euros. This is currently preceded by a free class to learn the dance la Sevillana, although this may have to stop if numbers dont increase. Everybody can practise my Yoga whatever age or physical condition. I always work in little groups and i will adapt the Yoga posture to every single student. I mix Ayur Yoga, therapeutic Yoga, Yin Yoga & Vinyasa Flow Yoga – the basic you will find in Hatha Yoga. Every class can be different as i always work in needs of my students. Come along and try out and learn to boost & stretch in a healthy way:

Mondays 10 h and 20.30 h in Nerja & 12.15 h in Torrox

Wednesdays 10.30 h (men only) in Nerja and 12.30 h in Torre del Mar

Thursdays 18 h in Torrox

People who call me for information often ask what for people are in the group to know if there fit in especially with her age. All of these groups will suit everybody, but to give you an idea some more details to the groups: Monday morning group in Nerja are mostly women 60plus, but of course men are very welcome :-). The Monday night class is a mixture women between 40 and 60. The Monday group in Torrox is a mixture of women & men 65plus.

In the Wednesday session in Torre del Mar are quite a  lot places left.

Men & women all ages.

The Thursday group in Nerja mostly women between 40-70..

For those who don’t like to work in a group, i offer one-to-one sessions in Nerja or at your residence.

Avoiding Fraud

According to fraud body Financial Fraud Action (FFA), there were more than a million cases between January and June this year, with someone falling victim on average every 15 seconds.

To help you avoid becoming another statistic, FFA has provided five simple tips.

1. Never disclose security details, such as your PIN or full password – it’s never right to reveal these details.
2. Never assume an email request or caller is genuine – people aren’t always who they say they are.
3. Don’t be rushed – a bank or genuine organisation won’t mind waiting to give you time to stop and think.
4. Listen to your instincts – if something feels wrong then it is usually right to pause and question what’s happening.
5. Stay in control – have the confidence to refuse unusual requests for information.

One item not covered is Direct Debits. With your bank details…. they are on every cheque…. a Direct Debit can be set up on your account by anyone, as Mister-Motor-Mouth found out to his cost! It is up to you to check your bank account regularly and report anything suspicious to your bank! the banks don’t tell you a direct debit has been setup…. but they should have to!

What’s on- Phoenix Club – Trip to Gibraltar

The Phoenix Club are off on their next shopping trip to Gibraltar on Friday the 7th October and we have a few seats still available.

We have pick ups at at the A1 Garden Centre, Torre del Mar bus station and finally at Algarrobo Lidl at 08.30.  The bus is parked in Morrisons car park and we leave Gibraltar at 16.30.  Due to visa restrictions on entering Gibraltar, please advise if you are a non EU citizen when you book.  Also it is important to remember to bring with you your EHIC card, just in case, and passports are essential.  On the way to Gibraltar we stop to spend a penny and for coffee.

We would greatly appreciate if payment was made before the journey.

The price?  €12pp includes a €1 gratuity for the driver.  Children under 12 can join us for 1/2 price.   Still the best value on the coast!
Early booking is recommended if you like a particular place, as seat numbers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Plenty to see in Gibraltar apart from the shopping!

The number was valid but had omitted the UK dialing code (uk mobile number). The strange part was when you rang it you could hear background noises at the other end but no voice replied. I left a message on  a later unanswered call and was even rung back but the same weird thing occurred, all ambient sounds heard but no speaker !?

What’s on – 8km run – Archez – Sunday 9th Oct

Archez Town Hall and the Diputación de Málaga are hosting an 8km run to be held in Archez on Sunday 9th Oct. There will be a full day of activities including a run for children (starting at 10am), the 8km main event (starting at 11.30am), Aerobic and Zumba demonstrations, bouncy castle and other kids activities, plus food, music and DJ’s throughout the course of the day.  Entrance fee for the race is 5 euros for adults and 2 euros for children. There will be T-shirts for all race participants and trophies for the top 3. Kids can sign up in Archez Town Hall and adults need to enrol at www.fedatletismoandaluz.net

It will be a great day out for all the family whether you’re racing, jogging, walking or just coming along to support everyone!

Bree is Still Missing

Hi there,we would like to thank everyone who has been in touch with us.Spanish,British and also holiday makers in Torrox Park/El Pino area.
Unfortunately Bree is still missing and it has been 12 days now.

We live in Manzano Bajo campo near El Morche  so it is more than likely she went further in to the campo.

Therefore we would like to make a further appeal especially to people living in the campo areas to please keep a lookout for her.
Bree is a very friendly 4year old medium /large dog,20 kilos and 50cm height to shoulder.

She has been clipped recently so her body is a light fawnish colour

Her head, back of legs and end of tail have been left uncut, hence are darker and shaggy.

Hi folks, Jukebox Bandits are playing live tonight Friday 23rd September on the terrace at Restaurante Maria at the Hotel Balcon in Competa from 9.00pm.

Jukebox Bandits are a covers band consisting of Rod Jones on keyboards and Mitch France on acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, penny whistle and vocals.

They play an eclectic mix of pop, rock and folk standards from Britain, America, Ireland and Spain. From Dire Straits to The Dubliners, from Manu Chao to Jason Mraz. The music starts mellow (whilst people are eating), gradually picking up the tempo and culminating with the dance set including standards like Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl”, REM’s “Losing My Religion” and The Mavericks’ “Dance the Night Away”.

As part of its Cultural week, the Ayuntamiento of Canillas de Albaida proudly presents the Fifth Night of Multi-cultural Music and Dance to be held in the Plaza (main square) in Canillas de Albaida on Sunday 9th October. Admission to the event is free but there will be opportunities to donate to Action for Animals local charity.

The idea behind the event is to create an evening of music originating from as many countries as possible and we have an International line up of performers for the night.

The first artists to perform will be local duo, Jukebox Bandits, comprising of Rod Jones and Mitch France. They will play a set of songs and tunes from around the World on electric and acoustic guitars, mandolin and keyboards, Jukebox Bandits and friends will also finish the night off with a lively set of music for dancing to.

Up next will be Grupo Bailar de Axarquia, led by Francey, a local dance teacher and they will perform a number of different dance styles accompanied by a guitarist.

Africa and The Netherlands will be well represented by Xenophone – African Percussion, 2 Africans and a Dutch couple performing a very exciting set of percussive pieces to include some African dancing, always a big hit at the Cultural Concert.

All the way from Yorkshire especially to perform at this concert, the Wild Geese will be playing 2 sets of music, mainly Celtic but with some rock and roll and novelty pieces on guitars, fiddle, whistle, bodhran, banjo and mandolin. The Wild Geese last played in the Plaza for the opening of the hotel almost 10 years ago.

Yanique and Patrick from Competa will play next, a mix of blues and contemporary songs on keyboards and guitar. Yanique is a singing teacher from the Netherlands who is relatively new to the area and Patrick is originally from Norwich in the UK and has lived and played here for many years.

Due to ill health Aire Flamenco will unfortunately not be able to perform as originally advertised, a replacement is currently being located.

Biddies que Bailan (all local dancers) will then dance an Irish reel on stage.

This will be followed by a ceilidh where you the audience have a chance to take part with a caller who will tell you exactly what to do.

Last year the concert had to be postponed for several days due to rain, hopefully that won’t happen again this year as it is a bit earlier. This unique multi-cultural night of music had been a huge success in previous years, please come along and make sure it is just as successful again this year.

There will be an opportunity to donate to Action for Animals, a local charitiy, please give generously to help our furry friends in need.

What to do with the plastic bottle tops??

Pocapecunia, the charity shop in aid of The Love A Child Foundation, used to collect plastic bottle tops and customers brought them to the shop.

When I had bags full, I dropped them at the petrol station, just before Lidl on the way to Frigiliana.

As I did yesterday, but all of a sudden they refuse them now.

Does anyone have an idea what to do with them?

One Eyed Jack is Missing 

One Eyed Jack has now been missing for four days. He is blind in his
left eye. From Algarrobo Campo, area  Fuentes Ariza. Very friendly,
chipped and has had all injections.  He is also neutered and is

Unidentified Fruit – Response

This could be a pomelo. It’s hard to be sure from one photo, but it is clearly a citrus plant. Fruits like this are almost never poisonous because they rely on animals eating the fruit to spread the seeds. They can be laxative (eg figs) and whether they are to your taste is another matter.
When asking for help identifying a plant, bush or tree, you really need three photos. One showing the overall shape of the thing in its environment, one close up of two or three leaves on the stem, and one of the flower and or fruit. Cut one fruit to show the cross section. There are on line identification guides but you usually need a bit of basic botany (knowing your stamens from your pistils) to use them.

 Native English speaking volunteers required.

The Mario Zimbrano College in Torre-del-Mar runs a department specialising in equipping Spanish students (aged from 20 to 40 years old) to find employment in the tourist industry. A large part of their two year course is English Language and they are looking for native English speakers who can give some of their spare time to come and talk with the students to improve their fluency.

The classes are 1 hour long–  Monday 11:45 till 14:45 Wednesday8:15 till 14:45 and Friday 09:15 till 12:45.

No regular commitment is required just come on any day you are available and join in for  as long as you can.

There are some 8 of us who already attend when we can but some days only one of us is available so the teachers are hoping for more volunteers.

No formal teaching is required as we are there to help with pronunciation and word order etc. There is a lesson subject but that usually gets forgotten to talk about more interesting subjects like shopping, food, cars etc.  and you even learn some new Spanish words.

Hi can anyone help we had a new satellite dish and icecript receiver fitted but since I have used video cannot now get a signal. We have tried phoning Holly the lady who has always dealt with us but there is no answer . Does anyone know how to reset it please?

Fun family day out, bring the kids and your dogs, to the Axarquia Animal Rescue Annual Dog Show and Market being held on Sunday 25th September in Benajarafe. What’s On- Textile Exhibition

English textile artist Jo Dennison would like to invite you to her retrospective solo exhibition which has its

inauguration Friday 23rd of September at 6.30pm.

She will give a brief talk on the subject matter of her works and how that has affected the different ways she choose to work.

The exhibition will run from Monday 26th of September till Friday 14th of October.

The Exhibition is open Monday to Friday from 11:00 to 14:00

and she expects to be there most mornings and working.
