The Phone Hacking Saga – Victory !

fI would like to thank all the Digamites who replied both directly and posted on Digame.

The outcome is fine now but the reason I still don’t understand.  Believe it or not I managed via a Movistar blog to contact Moviestar Customer Services, in English for mobile problems…..yes I did that!!

I will share this later as I think it may prove useful to others.

It appears my phone was data roaming which I cannot understand as I do not use roaming and never have done. However, the very polite gentleman at Movistar accessed my account and was able to tell me the times it went on roaming.  The outcome, he has blocked roaming from my phone…all appears ok now (given I never used it is no big deal for me).

How could this happen? The only things I can think of  is that in the morning I replaced my UK sim card with my Spanish sim as we had just returned from holiday the night before….but I have done this on numerous occasions without any problems.  The other possibility was I received a text from an English mobile from a person I haven’t spoken to in 4/5yrs…so whether either of these activated ‘roaming’ I have no idea.

At least thankfully  sorted for me now.

This is the advice I followed to get through to customer services regarding mobile problems that connected me with a helpful English speaking operative:-

Dial 1004 – it will be answered in Spanish giving you options.

At the pauses in between each of the options say “English”, “English”…I kept doing this even when I received a Spanish automated instruction and not knowing if it was working.

Then I got some crackly music with intermittent Spanish messages…I assume apologising for the delay (yes, I am guilty of speaking bad Spanish!)

Then Eureka…I was connected to a very helpful, competent, English speaking operative and he was very polite.

Hope this may assist others with Movistar mobile problems and have been frustrated in the past at trying to get through.

I would also mention that my husband experienced a similar experience some years ago.  He did not have a smart phone and as far as he was aware it did not have roaming. He even took the sim out for a couple of weeks to see if that would help. It did not as once replaced his balance was gone.   He took it to the Movistar shop in the  Ingenio Centre.  They phoned a department and put my husband on to them as they were supposed to speak English (yes, but badly), they were very rude to him,  said the problem was fixed….but it wasn’t and he  lost another top-up fee.   Suffice to say he left Movistar and is now with Eroski pay as you go.

What’s On- Phoenix Club Trip to Gibraltar – Friday 7th July

The Phoenix Club are off on their next shopping trip to Gibraltar on Friday the 7^th July.

We have pick ups at at the A1 Garden Centre, Torre del Mar bus station and finally at Algarrobo Lidl at 08.30.  The bus is parked in Morrisons car park and we leave Gibraltar at 16.30.  Due to visa restrictions on entering Gibraltar, please advise if you are a non EU citizen when you book.  Also it is important to remember to bring with you your EHIC card, just in case, and passports are essential.  On the way to Gibraltar we stop to spend a penny and for coffee.

We would greatly appreciate if payment was made before the journey.

The price?  €12pp includes a €1 gratuity for the driver.  Children under 12 can join us for 1/2 price.   Still the best value on the coast!
Early booking is recommended if you like a particular place, as seat numbers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Plenty to see in Gibraltar apart from the shopping!

These three kittens feral mother has been poisoned. They are not old enough to fend for them selves. One Siamese two black and white. About 6 weeks old. I have caught them. I will take them to the vets tomorrow to check they are ok. AAR would cover costs if fostered.

I think it better to do it this way.I did have a similar problem a year ago and went to one of the top up booths and got it rectified .The answer was simple my Data Roaming was switched on !!!!  Once this was switched off my money on top up was O.K. . Hope this helps.

This happened on my husband’s vodaphone.es account a few years ago. We took the phone into our local agent, who checked through and found he’d opened a text which was then able to access any balance on his phone. They had that number blocked and there has been no repeat of the problem.

Recommendation- Irrigation System

We have just had a new irrigation system fitted by Scott Wilson and his Spanish assistant Jose, at our campo house near Sayalonga.

The water pressure here has never been good and the original system was poorly installed..

Scott and Jose arrived on time and after discussing the work again realised that they needed some extra fittings, which we had not made clear when they viewed the work. This was no problem, they went off and quickly returned with the extras. The work was finished by 4pm and when tested it worked like a dream, which it never ever did before.

Scott and Jose are part of a team of General Builders who have done work for us before, they are thorough, tidy, professional and clear up after finishing the work.

Recommendation– Waynes Drains

Last year Waynes Drains installed a new Septic Tank for us and what a great job they did.  As it is close to our parking area we put up a big lamp to protect the cap. Unfortunately the lamp was knock and the septic tank cap crushed by a wayward parker.

We emailed Waynes Drain and they came and put on a new cap.

When we asked what do we owe you…’Nothing’ was the reply ‘it’s all part of the service’.  What a wonderful Waynes Drains.

What’s on– Lux Mundi Excursion

Tuesday July 25th – Excursion to “Festival of Lorca & Granada. Oh Cuba”.  Please come and join friends on an excursion to Granada, in the Generalife gardens to see the world premiere of “Oh Cuba”. Flamenco ballet and in which poetry, music and dance will tackle the revolving relationship between Federico and the Antillean island.

The show counts on a great team of 23 Spanish and Cuban artists headed by Loles León in the interpretation, Antonio Carmona in the musical composition and Adrián Galia in the choreography. Diego Franco endorses the Flemish compositions. The dramatisation and direction are by Francisco Ortuño Millán and original music.  You will arrive in Granada city at approx, 19.30, where there will be time for you to have a meal.  The coach will pick you up at 21.30 to take you to the Generalife for the show which starts at 22.00. Concert on Playazo Plaza – Torrent of Complaints –

This is one of the least unpleasant & non offensive and it is certainly the very, very last email I shall publish      Subject Closed!  Editor

I presume the writer of the complaint about the Playazo beach party was referring to San Juan which happens each year (and on most beaches) on the 23 June. I’m afraid that’s just something that occurs here, especially in summer months. Apart from the usual ferias and fiestas, there are additional beach parties too. One year the music was so loud from the Torre del Mar Beach Festival in July we had to move out of our home in Torrox which isn’t even in view of the area, but the bass was bouncing off the hillsides (this year it’s been extended so is 4 nights, until about 8am the next morning, 5-8th).  No town or village is free from noise of their ferias and fiestas which go on all night long, but they seem to attract a lot of visitors and bring in income to the area. The rules for music levels in bars and clubs does not seem to apply to the local traditional fiestas.

Putting it politely, I think if the writer goes to the Ayuntamiento and asks for a rates’ rebate due to the noise, I think they would have a good laugh about it…. this is the way Spain is!

 

 

Hacked Mobile

It appears my mobile (Movistar) has been hacked.  I received, as is normal, a text notification to say I had less than 2 euro on 23/6 at 12.38.

At 13.06, on that day,  I topped up with 10 euros bringing my balance to 11,62. During the night I received 2 notification texts simultaneously at 00.29 (24/6)one stating less than 3 euros and the other less than 2 euros, I then received a text notification that I had zero balance….I had only made 3 texts and 3 short local phone calls on the 23rd.

At 12.48 on 25/6 I topped up with only 5 euros as I thought something strange was going on…….at 13.18, exactly 30 minutes later I again received 2 notification texts simultaneously stating I had less than 3 euros and less than 2 euros.  I hadn’t used my phone.

If anyone has experienced this and can share how this can be rectified I would be grateful.  I have had my number for 13 years and as you can imagine the inconvenience it would cause to have to have it changed especially as I do not have a land-line.

El Playazo concert

I am seeking an answer to some questions.   Last night and this morning we in this area were subjected to another “concert”, it finished spot on time at 5 a.m.  However I am hoping that someone somewhere can explain why during the early evening the music could be heard but was not imposing upon one’s life, but around the time when most people have decided to climb into bed the volume is turned up, to deafening levels.   Nerja council banned music in the Burriana Beach area because of complaints from residents.   In most cases there the music was around before the apartments were built…………in our case it would appear to be a reverse situation.

Do the organisers of this event live in this area?    I doubt it.

Why should residents in a quiet area be subjected to such inconsiderate treatment…………..?

I have been told that this event might occur again later this year – how do we stop it happening……?

Are we entitled to a rates reduction because of noise levels outwith our control……….?

Why is no consideration given to the clients of the Marinas de Nerja hotel………..?

This is not a good advertisement for Nerja – think about it seriously Town Hall.

Recommendation- Airport Transport

If you need an airport transfer the best firm you could use is Ferramar Taxis.  They charge a flat rate of 55 euro from Torrox Costa  to any point in Malaga, airport, port, RENFE or even in the centre of the city.  They are always on time (usually early) and the drivers speak some English. The lady in the office speaks good English.

The office is on the main road in Torrox Costa on that stretch between Aldi the shop that sells cushions.

Can I recommend that you visit Andrew John’s inspiring exhibition of his Watercolour paintings at Moclinejo in the Sala de exposiciones.  The Exhibition opened on 26 May (see the video here –  https://youtu.be/PS3bqxstvv8 )  and continues until the 12 July.  The opening times are every day 1030 – 1330 and Sat/Sun 1530 – 1700 in addition.

Apart from the exhibition, Moclinejo is on the Raisin route and one of the delightful villages worthy of a visit in Axarquia.

Warning – Theft in Hospital

My wife is critically ill in Carlos Haya.

She left her only means of contact, her Smartphone, being charged by her bedside. About midnight an unseen thief entered her room, (with two ill patients) unplugged her mobile and stole it.

How anyone can steal from someone seriously ill is beyond me but slime comes in human form sometimes.

She is as much devastated by such callousness as her illness.

I wish to warn other seriously ill people of this possibility, in any hospital.

Please also pray for my beautiful, caring wife. Thank you. Tony Randall

Centipede Identified-

It´s a  Megarian Banded Centipede (Scolopendra cingulata – escolopendra), grows up to 15cm long and will give you a very nasty sting, so take care!

The creature shown is a Scolopendra.

They have a nasty very painful bite and it is advised to go to the medical centre to have an injection, if you are bitten.  Small animals and children are particularly vulnerable.

Scolpendras are difficult to kill so make sure that you dispose of them ruthlessly.

They also seem to be able to survive for some time in pools, so do not be fooled into thinking they are dead, unless you are sure.

The large Centipede referred to is commonly known as a Tiger Centipede and is found in North Africa and Southern Spain, is poisonous but not deadly.

Mealy Bugs & Prickly Pears

We had  a number of infested prickly pears in our garden and found an extremely effective way of eradicating the pests-we dug up the plants and burnt them,(before the hot weather set in). Problem solved and we haven’t regretted the action-we can see prickly pears (covered in mealy bugs), along any public road or track we travel.

1. KODI Problems? Many users are having problems with the new upgraded series 17 version of Kodi crashing. The designers, rather than fix it, are going to release a new version. Kodi 18 has already entered the public testing phase. If you have not upgraded from version 16, keep using it until it is announced that version 18 is stable at this Kodi info site https://kodi.tv/blog. But there are other Kodi problems to deal with. Due to a crackdown on video piracy many of the free Kodi IPTV plug-ins are no longer working and have shut down their websites; the remainder have become unreliable and may soon fold. The future of IPTV is either paid subscription services or using free .m3u files that must be updated every few days. The .m3u files provide a list of channels/networks from which to choose. Since it is easier to use .m3u files with VLC Player than with Kodi, and as many subscription services require their own software (Mobdro for example), the future of Kodi as a format for viewing free IPTV is in doubt. I suggest you either get a paid subscription to FilmOn, Mobdro (Android only), etc., or study up on using .m3u files. I can teach you to use .m3u files, and provide you the required tools, in a single €25 class.

2. Beware Windows 10-S, a new version of Windows 10. It will soon be offered in budget priced computer models. This is Microsoft’s answer to the Google Chromebook. It has severe limitations. 3. The heat has returned and with it laptops will be running hot. In addition, many people now have duo-core and quad-core laptops; more processors means more heat generated. When temps rise above 28C it is advisable to take precautions. Place spacers beneath the laptop to allow air circulation, point a desk fan at your laptop, or use a “cooling tray”. Keep the air vents clean, an old toothbrush can be used for this. If your laptop shuts itself down from overheating, wait a half hour before restarting it to avoid damage. If a laptop is driven to shut itself down repeatedly from overheating the thermal paste on the processor may fail, the RAM can burn out or your hard disk can die. All are expensive repairs best avoided. A full fan and cooling system cleaning is part of my computer clean&tuneup maintenance service, something all laptops need at least annually.

Many people all over the world are using Skype phones from different manufacturers.

Until recently problems have arisen with them, this is due

to Microsoft making them EOL [end of line] meaning

there is no support or firmware update for the phone.

The phones can make outgoing calls on a Skype In number but

anyone receiving a call will not hear the phone ring thus making a phone virtually useless.

It means either leaving a desktop computer or laptop on permanently so when someone calls it will ring on the computer but you can still pick up the phone to talk.

Microsoft want you to buy their products seeing as they own Skype.

The choice is yours on what to do.

Recommendation– Cactus and Cochineal

I see that we are into the Cactus and Cochineal season again – those tiny white flies that breed on the cactus (chumbas) and then fly through normal mosquito nets.  (Mealy bugs don’t fly)  You may remember my little film from two years ago.

Apart from cutting down these annoying cactus try my old favourite, a hand garden pressure sprayer loaded with a mix of Domestos bleach available from Torrox and Nerja Supersols.  I have no idea if is any good for the cactus but I don’t care since they too are rated a nuisance.  Chris B

With reference to Patricia’s letter. I would like to add we have been coming to Torrox for about 10 years – using Penoncillo beach and each summer the sewage has drifted along. Mostly in the afternoons. Each year we are told that Nerja’s new sewage disposal plant will be finished but it never is.

It’s quite disgusting and puts visitors off going to the beach.

Something has to be done to alleviate this health hazard.

Cochineal flies/beetles ‘mealy bug’ infestation

(Response to previous item requesting  info)

Some information that some of you may find helpful.

We have just recently moved to Torrox Campo.  Within days of arriving for our first summer the house was filled, at night-time, with white ‘mealy bugs’ – with windows closed and screens in place. We checked the internet for information and there was a good deal to be found, especially previous posts here, at Digame.

We have a lot of prickly pears surrounding the house so we, with information to hand, began to power spray the plants with water, scrub them and we also sprayed soapy liquids – all to little effect.

We did however find a solution that some of you may be aware of. My partner used a butane, hand-held blow-torch just far enough away from the prickly pear to burn off the ‘mealy bugs’ without damaging the prickly pear too much.  We then went around all of the prickly pears and treated them in this way and the reduction in infestation was remarkable.  While this method has been incredibly successful for us we would advise caution.  The blow-torch should only be used where the area surrounding the prickly pear has been cleared of all dried garden matter – grasses, dead leaves etc.  A garden hose should also be kept handy should anything catch fire. It might even be an idea to hose down the surrounding area before using the blow-torch

We would much rather have left the ‘mealy bugs’ alone but the level of infestation meant that it just wasn’t an option.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the opening hours of Competa police station please?

On 4 separate occasions,in normal hours, i have travelled from the campo to the station to take in important papers and collect information from the desk and each time they have been closed. I find this dismaying for residents to say the least and particularly at this time of year,when there is also a general influx of tourists to the village and surroundings.

Nerja Beaches

The problem is not with holes in the pipe-line. It is simply the fact that raw sewage is pumped out to sea and this is then washed backed to the shore by the tides. The authorities say that the force of the waves etc should break up the sewage but that doesn´t stop us frequently having filthy water. It is also affecting other beaches along the coast.

I am a beach person and I do check before I go in the water BUT I do not go in above my neck. Also I only use a beach that has showers so I can rinse off straight away and then have a good shower when I get home.

This has been a problem for many, many years and is already well known by Nerja’s visitors. Google ‘Nerja sea pollution’ and there are articles going back years from sites like Trip advisor, (the US and New Zealand versions as well) that talk about the state of the sea. The authorities are well aware of it and the possible damage to the tourist industry, but have not exactly rushed to build a water treatment works.

We have Krups Nespresso coffee maker, which takes the capsules.  It is
suddenly dead!
Does not respond to plugging in to the mains, the operating buttons on
top do not light up.  There does not appear to be any way in which one
can open it up to see what might be wrong.  The machine is about 5
years old.  If anyone out there has any ideas as to what might be

Recommendation- for Band Hire

Sol Souvenir is an acoustic duo, both play guitar and sing. I first saw them last year, at Cochran’s Irish Bar, playing to a packed house. One of the best gigs I attended in 2016. Now they are back in the area after a Winter away. I saw them recently at Busker’s Bar, Nerja. Another excellent gig.

I would highly recommend them if you are seeking some live entertainment for almost any type of event. Very reasonable rates. Perfect for weddings, reunions, parties, bar gigs, etc. Still young enough to exude boundless musical excitement, they are none-the-less both polished musicians and vocalists. They bring a small but strong, high quality PA system. They don’t require much space to set-up.

They have a long playlist covering Rock, Folk, Blues, Pop Classics. They are native Spanish speaking, but speak and sing in English. They do not use backing tracks. They do not use pitch correction. They do sing from the heart, and each show is unique, tailored to the situation.

Recommendation Needed – Car Valeting

Looking for recommendations for car valeting, inside and out.
