Recommendation Needed – Bathroom Renovation

Can any Digamite recommend (or the opposite) us a company to renovate a bathroom? Mainly change bathtub to shower, but some more (ceramics on walls changed….etc).

Trip to Gibraltar – Friday 4^th August

The Phoenix Club are off on their next shopping trip to Gibraltar on Friday the 4^th August

We have pick ups at at the A1 Garden Centre, Torre del Mar bus station and finally at Algarrobo Lidl at 08.30.  The bus is parked in Morrisons car park and we leave Gibraltar at 16.30.  Due to visa restrictions on entering Gibraltar, please advise if you are a non EU citizen when you book.  Also it is important to remember to bring with you your EHIC card, just in case, and passports are essential.  On the way to Gibraltar we stop to spend a penny and for coffee.

We would greatly appreciate if payment was made before the journey.

The price?  €12pp includes a €1 gratuity for the driver.  Children under 12 can join us for 1/2 price.   Still the best value on the coast!
Early booking is recommended if you like a particular place, as seat numbers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Plenty to see in Gibraltar apart from the shopping!

Ole! Flamenco at Venta Luciano, Almunecar – 25^th August

The Phoenix Club are off to the famous Venta Luciano on the night of the 25^th August to enjoy an evening of great entertainment.

About the Show

Venta Luciano is located in the coastal town of Almuñécar in the province of Granada.  Opened in 1956, the restaurant has a long history of presenting authentic flamenco in the Costa Tropical.  This tradition continues with the most recent flamenco show in Venta Luciano, “Aires de Sacromonte”.  Held Friday nights from May through October in a typical Andalusian setting, ticket options include the show with drink or a barbecue dinner served before the performance.

Included in the price is their famous BBQ, all you can eat and drink, traditional Flamenco, coach fare and drivers gratuity.

Downloading Videos- Help Needed

Could anyone please help me to download video from this unit into my PC running Win7. Google searches and the Sony website are not specific with their data. No drivers available for Win 7 or IEEE Host Controllers need to be installed etc etc.

The unit uses a mini cassette recording medium.

I would like to hear from anyone who may have resolved this problem before I consider replacing it.

Recommendation- Pool Cleaner

A nasty algae recently formed on the bottom of our pool and grew and extended up the walls and into the water as you watched(almost)

We found Pooltec on Digamextra and Jeff came the following morning. After a couple of hours work, the problem was sorted and the pool usable. Much to the joy of four little grandchildren who had arrived that day. Jeff then returned the morning after, to check the state of the water and adjust it, completing the work and to instruct us on proper, and hopefully simple ,pool care with printed charts etc.

I don’t think you could find a better and more sympathetic service anywhere. An extraordinarily patient man. I can recommend him unreservedly.  Very reasonable cost too.

We will be able to afford up to 800 euros per month.

Our lease finishes here next May so there is no rush to find a home but we are going to visit Spain as many times as required in order to find our ideal home.

Our first visit is on 26th September this year for a week.

What’s On- Yoga Summer Special

I would like to invite you to a Yoga Summer special 2017 , 2 h Yin Yoga on Saturday, 22th of July, 10 h to 12 h at Shiva Center Torrox – price 15 €.

We will start with Pranayama and than going to a deep practice of Yin Yoga which is a very soft & gentle Yoga and suits everybody. Like always – we will end with a little relaxation.

Yin Yoga is a passive practice, which involves variations of seated and supine poses typically held for 3 to 5 minutes, accessing deeper layers of fascia. Of course always adapted to every single student. In long term Yin Yoga gives you a lot of flexibility & is very healthy for your joints. With Yin Yoga as well you can correct damaged postures and it is the perfect Yoga for hot temperatures.

Everybody is welcome. The workshop will suit you all – beginners & new yogis as well advanced yogis. Try out a different Yoga style and get inspired.

Hi folks, Jukebox Bandits are playing live at Restaurante/Bar Cerezo (Paco’s) in Canillas de Albaida this coming Friday 21 July from 8.30pm. Jukebox Bandits are: Rod Jones on keyboards, Ian Hayton on acoustic guitar, bass and vocals, Marshall Dixon on drums and percussion (away at the moment), Ken Peacock on saxophone and flute and Mitch France on guitars, banjo, fiddle, mandolin and vocals.

They play an eclectic mix of pop, blues, jazz, rock and folk standards from Britain, America, Ireland and Spain on a variety of instruments. From Dire Straits to The Dubliners, from Manu Chao to Jason Mraz. The music starts mellow (whilst people are eating), gradually picking up the tempo and culminating with the dance set including standards like Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl”, REM’s “Losing My Religion” and The Mavericks’ “Dance the Night Away”.

Battle Back volunteers are raising money throughout the summer for 12 British veterans who have loss limbs and experienced life changing injuries. These guys will be coming to Spain to participate in a Battle Back golf tournament at Bavaria and Los Moriscos golf courses. The aim is to raise money for flights, travel & accommodation.

Recommendation Needed –Swimming Pool Problem

Can anyone  out there  help me?
I sanitize  my  4×5 (by 1avg) pool using  chlorine  granules, up to now, no problems. This season  if i put 1/2 kilo in the pool it goes  from  bright  yellow  to  clear  in 2 days !
The PH has been stubbornly  on the low side, but is now  suddenly  geting into the pink,
The water is  still ok to swim  in  but something is wrong somewhere.

Recommendation Ant problems. (1)
When I moved into my old house in 1999 I had a big ant problem especially in the kitchen. I believed that ants like sugar! The previous owners had a dog and cats and a lot of cat and dog food has sugar as one of its ingredients. So a massive amount of floor washing was the first task. Then I looked at any other sugar supplies. Fruit juice (fresh or bottled) jam, marmalade, honey, sugar grains, breakfast cereals etc. All were sealed and jams put into the fridge after the outsides were wiped. Cereals kept in sealed plastic boxes and the tiniest spills were cleaned and the mop and bucket employed frequently. My Spanish neighbour told me I was mopping all wrong and she showed me how to mop once with a wet mop and then squeeze the mop and pick up all the water and detergent with the dryer mop. Well it worked. Within a week the ants came no more. When I got my dogs they ate regularly and their bowls washed straight afterwards.

I’ve honestly never seen ants in the house again. No chemicals just normal floor cleaning fluid, water and a mop and bucket, –  and I got a daily work out.  Good luck with that.  Do as the Spanish do. They know a thing or two.

Oh and don’t forget to rinse out glasses and cups after use too.

Newly arrived – diatomaceous earth.

Diatomaceous Earth is a creamy-white talc-like powder, a sedimentary deposit that is the fossilised remains of marine phytoplankton, algae-like plants called diatom. Their skeletons are made of a natural substance called silica.

It works as an insecticide on any bugs with an exoskeleton – things like ants, fleas, ticks, cockroaches, bed bugs, spiders, earwigs, aphids, thrips, scale insect, beetles, scorpions, slugs and snails. It causes the insects to dry out and die by absorbing all the fats and oils from the cuticle of the exoskeleton and then they are sucked dry. It may sound rather macabre but, dehydration is quick and death is, apparently, rather rapid! It is not harmful to mammals, including humans, because we have an internal skeleton with a layer of skin to protect us.

Use it in the garden, as a dusting or in dilution, on and around plants – it gives great protection – sprinkle it in and around ants’ nests and along entry pathways into the house. It can also be used on cats, dogs, chickens to kill fleas, ticks and mites.

Help Please – Attacked by Ants!!

Are there any Digamites out there suffering, as I am, with an invasion of ants in the house?  There are large ones and small ones in the kitchen and they are appearing from behind kitchen units, floor tiles and other places.  I have tried to track them back but can’t find any nests as they just seem to appear from nowhere. I have dogs and cats so didn’t want to use insecticides, also not a good idea in the kitchen with food, but I have tried all the recommended suggestions from the internet. e.g. anti bacterial spray, lemon juice, pepper, talc, chalk lines etc, some of which kill the ants but more just appear after that.

Any tried and tested suggestions would be most welcome.

Trip to Gibraltar – Friday 4^th August

The Phoenix Club are off on their next shopping trip to Gibraltar on Friday the 4^th August

We have pick ups at at the A1 Garden Centre, Torre del Mar bus station and finally at Algarrobo Lidl at 08.30.  The bus is parked in Morrisons car park and we leave Gibraltar at 16.30.  Due to visa restrictions on entering Gibraltar, please advise if you are a non EU citizen when you book.  Also it is important to remember to bring with you your EHIC card, just in case, and passports are essential.  On the way to Gibraltar we stop to spend a penny and for coffee.

We would greatly appreciate if payment was made before the journey.

The price?  €12pp includes a €1 gratuity for the driver.  Children under 12 can join us for 1/2 price.   Still the best value on the coast!
Early booking is recommended if you like a particular place, as seat numbers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Plenty to see in Gibraltar apart from the shopping!

About the Show

Venta Luciano is located in the coastal town of Almuñécar in the province of Granada.  Opened in 1956, the restaurant has a long history of presenting authentic flamenco in the Costa Tropical.  This tradition continues with the most recent flamenco show in Venta Luciano, “Aires de Sacromonte”.  Held Friday nights from May through October in a typical Andalusian setting, ticket options include the show with drink or a barbecue dinner served before the performance.

Included in the price is their famous BBQ, all you can eat and drink, traditional Flamenco, coach fare and drivers gratuity.

Data Roaming on Mobile Phones

For paye as you go contracts

Your phone may have its data roaming switched ON so mail/internet use is chargeable even if you are in your home with your router/internet. Outside your home and if you have asked for ‘street internet’ you will use the 3G/mobile network which is chargeable and will use your contracted Gb allocation.

On my LG smart phone the data facility is switched ON/OFF by manually scrolling downwards from the top of the screen; data function is the icon with two back-back arrows. White=OFF, Blue=ON. Scrolling sideways displays other functions, Power Saver, Bluetooth etc

Hope this helps those not familiar with the use of phone internet/mail.

Thanks to respondents re Cruises

Thanks to all the people who responded to my post.  Not everybody realised that Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines (except for a few in winter) do not go from Malaga any more.  That is why I was asking about TUI, the only line using Malaga as its home port. I received some helpful information from one Digamite which I have passed on to those people who asked me to.  The whole point was to find a cruise from Malaga, we are not interested in flying anywhere, and in any case the flights don’t always match the cruise times, for example, the one truly direct flight to Venice is a day late. Many thanks to everyone who responded.

Discounts for seeing a doctor, dentist, even vets, there is a comprehensive list of health conditions and clinics. The card only costs 50euro per year and I first used the card the day after I bought it. You can also get a referral quicker to the health service here.

Services Available – Cruises from Malaga

We have done 5 Thomson/TUI cruises from Malaga – the last being 6 weeks ago on TUI Discovery 2 (the latest addition to the Thomson fleet) and yesterday we booked again for late October on the same ship.  We are also booked on the TUI Discovery 1 sailing from Malaga to Southampton next May.

Your agent has given you incorrect information.  You used to have to book flightless ‘cabin only’ cruises via the Thomson call centre but now can do this on-line at Cruises Only 2017 / 2018 | Thomson Cruises (scroll down to Malaga).  Booking is a quick and easy process, the only problem being that, although the booking form accepts a Spanish address, for some reason it won’t take a Spanish phone number so we use a friends UK number them email our Spanish number to pretravelservices@thomson.co.uk who immediately amend the details on their computer.   On your embarkation day you can join the ship at Malaga port any time from 10.30 onwards.

TUI have cruises out of Malaga until w/c 19th November this year and from March 2018.  There were no planned Thomson cruises out of Malaga for Summer 2018 but it has just been announced that ‘Spirit’ will be sailing then – older, with a bit of faded grandeur, but a lovely ship and great crew (the crew are an asset on all Thomson/TUI cruises).

Cruising from Malaga

Those of you that like cruising will know that you cannot get many cruises from Malaga these days.  One of the cruise companies that do use Malaga as its base are TUI (aka Thomson).  However when I tried to book a cruise with them my agent (UK based) said that they will not accept bookings without a flight from the UK which is included in the price,  This seems ridiculous to me, that we have to fly to the UK to fly back again!  Have any Digamites cruised with TUI out of Malaga? if so how did they arrange it.  Also, what was it like.  This is a puzzle I am determined to get to the bottom of, I don’t like Pulmantur or Costa and this seems to be the only other option.

When I switched on my TV yesterday it just showed the red standby light and whatever I do I cannot get it to change to the green one.

Obviously I have no picture or sound.

Recommendation Needed –How to Clean Fireplace

Please can anyone suggest ways of cleaning my fireplace?

It’s very old brick and cement and even after scrubbing it doesn’t seem to make any difference, it just looks tired and grubby and sad!
