SPAIN

Omicron variant BA.2 already accounts for up to 75% of new infections in Spain: {Translation}14Mar22 17:08
-The BA.2 lineage of the omicron variant is becoming a major concern for health authorities. The cause of the new wave of infections that is gripping the countries of central Europe, Asia and Australia, known as ‘stealth’ omicron is also spreading rapidly in Spain and now accounts for between 19% and 75% of new infections, depending on the autonomous communities, according to the latest update of the report of variants, made public on Monday by the Centre for Coordination of Alerts and Health Emergencies (CCAES).
-Last week it accounted for between 2% and 49% of cases, which speaks of its speed of transmission, so that “the probability that BA.2 is imposed on the rest of the circulating lineages at this time is considered very high,” according to the technicians of the Ministry of Health.
-The alert for the consequences of the spread of this lineage is spreading throughout the world. BA.2 is more dangerous than the other omicron lineages because it is more contagious than BA.1 and because people who have already had omicron can, in some cases, become re-infected, as the immunity provided by previous infection with BA.1 or other omicron lineages is not complete.
-In principle, BA.2 has similar rates of hospitalisation and severe disease to BA.1, but the fact that it is more contagious may put the most vulnerable population at risk, say health officials in Spain.
-National governments are taking action against this new upsurge in covid-19. In the UK, Boris Johnson’s government has approved a new booster dose for the over-75s to curb the new lineage, as in Australia, where pandemic infection records are now being set. The outbreaks that have led to the closure of cities in China are also partly due to this lineage, which in South Africa has accounted for another spike in infections in recent weeks.
-In Germany, the health ministry warns that the situation is “critical”, while the cumulative incidence in Austria has reached 4,600 cases per 100,000 population, figures not seen at any time during the pandemic. “BA.2 could prolong the omicron wave,” Paul Elliott, an epidemiologist at Imperial College London, warned on Thursday.

Government limits tax cuts to energy prices for the time being:{Translation, summary}
-The Government spokesperson and Minister of Territorial Policy, Isabel Rodríguez, has announced that the tax cut will be applied for now only to the price of energy, although the Executive is studying how the economic consequences of inflation and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have affected all sectors.
-In an interview on RNE (Spanish National Radio) reported by Europa Press, Rodríguez said on Monday that the government of Pedro Sánchez is going to analyse whether to apply the tax cut only to the energy sector or whether to extend the measure to “all affected sectors”.
-“What this government does want is for the measures to be adopted at European level”, emphasised the government spokesperson, who praised Sánchez’s role both at European Union level and at national level to “lead the change in regulations”.

Transport strike has no impact in Andalusia, says Fatrans: {Translation, summary} The road haulage strike to protest the sudden and constant increases in the price of diesel has not affected the activity of hauliers in Andalusia, apart from some information pickets in industrial estates and without any incidents having been recorded. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been denied permission to appeal at Britain’s Supreme Court against a decision to extradite him to the United States, the court said on Monday. EUROPE

In Germany the COVID situation is ‘critical,’ Lauterbach says:
-German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said the impact of COVID-19 in the country had reached a “critical” level after the number of infections rose to a record high this week.
-“We are in a situation that I would like to describe as critical,” Lauterbach said at the weekly coronavirus press briefing in Berlin on Friday. “We have strongly rising case figures again. […] I keep reading that the omicron variant is a milder variant but that’s only true to a limited extent.”
-Despite planning to further relax COVID-19 rules, Germany logged a record high number of coronavirus infections in 24 hours on Thursday, and a figure almost as high, 252,836 cases, on Friday.
-“The situation is objectively worse than the public mood,” the health minister said. He said that some people’s belief in Germany, including politicians, that the pandemic was now over, was an “error of judgement.” “We can not be satisfied with a situation in which 250 people are dying every day and the prospect is that in a few weeks more people will die,” he said. EU considers its forecasts obsolete and assumes that “it is impossible to know the impact of the Russian invasion on Ukraine”: The European Union knows that its economic growth forecasts for 2022 are no longer valid. But they also assume that “it is impossible to know the impact of the Russian invasion on Ukraine.” This was expressed by the Commissioner for the Economy, Paolo Gentiloni, at the exit of the Eurogroup, this Monday in Brussels.
Isn’t that reassuring? Photo:elDiario.es

“I don’t feel that I have earned that right”- Dolly Parton withdraws from Rock & Roll Hall of Fame consideration:
-The “9 to 5” singer announced via social media that she has removed her name from the voting ballot as she doesn’t feel like she’s earned the right to be considered for induction.
-“Dolly here! Even though I am extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I don’t feel that I have earned that right. I really do not want votes to be split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out,” she wrote. “I do hope that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will understand and be willing to consider me again – if I’m ever worthy.”
-The 76-year-old added that her nomination has inspired her to venture into the rock genre, something her husband Carl Dean has urged her to do.
-“This has, however, inspired me to put out a hopefully great rock ‘n’ roll album at some point in the future, which I have always wanted to do! My husband is a total rock ‘n’ roll freak, and has always encouraged me to do one. I wish all of the nominees good luck and thank you again for the compliment. Rock on!” the country music icon concluded.
-This year’s nominees also include Eminem, Beck, Carly Simon, Kate Bush, Duran Duran, A Tribe Called Quest, and Lionel Richie, among others. The class of 2022 inductees will be revealed in May.

China COVID lockdowns halt Apple, Toyota and VW production, may boost inflation: New coronavirus lockdowns in China are snarling production for everything from Apple iPhones to Toyota SUVs — and threatening to make already red-hot global inflation even worse. Key Apple suppliers including Foxconn have been forced to shut down factories in Shenzhen, where iPhones, iPads and Mac computers are produced, after the regional government placed the city into lockdown on Sunday. A ban on non-essential work in Shenzhen — which is known as China’s Silicon Valley and is home to major tech firms like Tencent and Huawei — is set to last for at least one week. American astronaut will return to Earth on Russian spacecraft despite Ukraine invasion, NASA says:
-Geopolitical tensions won’t keep an American astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts from returning to Earth together as planned this month.
-NASA’s Mark Vande Hei and cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anton Shkaplerov have long been scheduled to come home from the International Space Station aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft on March 30. And that remains the plan, despite the strain that Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine has placed on Russia’s many space partnerships.
-“I can tell you for sure: Mark is coming home on that Soyuz,” Joel Montalbano, the manager of NASA’s International Space Station program, said during a news conference today (March 14). “We are in communication with our Russian colleagues; there’s no fuzz on that.” Photo:FANDOM.
