Elections in Andalucia 2022- PP sweeps with an absolute majority, the socialist party achieved its worst result ever and Cs disappears: {Translation, summary} 19/06/2022 22:57
– The Partido Popular (PP, a conservative and Christian-democratic political party,  according to Wikipedia) has achieved an uncontested victory in the regional elections of this Sunday 19 June with 57 MPs and 42% of the votes, with over 90% of the votes counted, guaranteeing it an absolute majority – set at 55 MPs – against a PSOE (Partido Socialista Obrero Español  / Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party) that recorded its worst result ever with 31 seats, and Ciudadanos (left / liberal), which has lost all its members of Parliament. Vox (right / conservative) repeated as the third political force with 14 deputies – two more than at present.
– The popular PP leader Juanma Moreno thus achieves the first absolute majority in Andalusia since 2008. Image:EuropaPress. Voter turnout for the Andalusian elections is lower than in 2018:
Voter turnout has been similar to previous years, with numbers at 2pm showing a four-point increase compared to 2018’s elections, though the 6pm figures proved there was a decrease in voters by three points. The Times- Every railway ticket office in England to be closed in new secret plan: The Government is planning to close every rail ticket office in England, leaving passengers to buy their tickets online, according to The Times. The move will save £500million a year and is reported to be ready to roll out from September. The paper says the rail industry has written a confidential strategy to phase out physical tickets, closing its almost 1,000 ticket offices in England. One in every eight tickets is still bought over the counter according to Transport Secretary Grant Shapps. EUROPE

Germany to Burn More Coal: Germany’s economy minister said Sunday that the country will limit the use of natural gas for electricity production amid concerns about possible shortages caused by a cut in supplies from Russia.
– Economy Minister Robert Habeck said that Germany will try to compensate for the move by increasing the burning of coal, a more polluting fossil fuel. “That’s bitter, but it’s simply necessary in this situation to lower gas usage,” said Habeck, a member of the environmentalist Green party.
– Russian gas company Gazprom announced last week that it was sharply reducing supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline for technical reasons, but which Habeck said appeared to be politically motivated. F1 News- Canadian Grand Prix- Max Verstappen holds off Carlos Sainz to extend championship lead: The two started the final 15 laps nose to tail after a late safety car but, despite heavy pressure from Sainz, Verstappen held on with older tyres. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell took third and fourth for Mercedes as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc recovered to fifth from the back of the grid.
– Verstappen extended his championship lead over Leclerc to 49 points. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez remains in second place despite retiring from the race with an engine problem but is only three points ahead of Leclerc. Photo:Getty. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/61860298

Swim federation restricts transgender participation in women’s competition: Swimming’s world governing body FINA on Sunday voted to restrict the participation of transgender athletes in elite women’s competitions and create a working group to establish an “open” category for them in some events as part of its new policy. Female-to-male transgender athletes (transgender men) are fully eligible to compete in men’s swimming competitions. The creation of an open category will mean that everybody has the opportunity to compete at an elite level.
– The debate intensified after University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas became the first transgender NCAA champion in Division I history after winning the women’s 500-yard freestyle earlier this year. Thomas has expressed a desire to compete for a place at the Olympics but the new FINA rule would block her participation.
– FINA’s decision, the strictest by any Olympic sports body, was made during its extraordinary general congress after members heard a report from a transgender task force comprising leading medical, legal and sports figures.
– The policy was passed with a roughly 71% majority after it was put to the members of 152 national federations with voting rights who had gathered for the congress at the Puskas Arena.

SPACE

See 5 planets align in order for first time in 18 years: The five so-called naked-eye planets, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, are having a rare solar system reunion right now. In the morning hours throughout June, early risers have been able to catch the planets in the sky from low in the east to higher in the south. This is what astronomers refer to as conjunction. What makes this event even more unique is the planets are visible in their natural order from the sun. Not since December 2004 has this occurred, according to Sky & Telescope magazine. And the parade of planets is about to get even better for viewing. The gang will again line up in order Friday morning, June 24, with Mercury much easier to spot. The peak time to see the conjunction is after dawn and it will last about an hour before sunlight washes out the sky. “But the real bonus is the waning crescent Moon positioned between Venus and Mars,” the magazine said in a statement, “serving as a proxy Earth.” Image:Sky & Telescope. Monsoon floods kill 42 people, millions stranded in Bangladesh, India: At least 25 people were killed by lightning or landslides over the weekend in Bangladesh while millions were left marooned or homeless in low-lying northeastern parts hit by the worst monsoon floods in the country’s recent history, officials said.
– In the neighbouring Indian state of Assam, at least 17 people were killed during the wave of flooding that began this month, police officials said on Sunday.
– Many of Bangladesh’s rivers have risen to dangerous levels and the runoff from heavy rain from across Indian mountains exacerbated the situation, said Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, the head of the state-run Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre.
