Cudeca in Torre del Mar and Nerja are still looking for volunteers

The Cudeca Shop in Nerja now has air conditioning for the comfort of the customers and staff.

We also have a sale on in trousers and skirts. ” Buy one, get one free”

The sale will go on until the end of the month.

The furniture shop  in Torre Del Mar will re/open this week  and we are looking for more volunteers to help  run it.

The Torre del Mar shop  opens in the afternoons Monday to Friday as well as the mornings Monday to Saturday.

If you can spare a few hours a week to help this very worthy charity we will be delighted to hear from you.

We are also looking for volunteers in the Nerja shop.

We usually work from9.45am until 2pm Monday to Saturday and would love to hear from you if you can help us out.

Delightful pair of kittens seeking accommodation  

The little chap above is grey and white and his sister is black and white with some tasteful yellow accessories. They’re healthy and happy at about 3 months, but sadly cannot stay in their temporary home in Algarrobo pueblo. As they’re siblings, it would be lovely if they could stay together, but if you only have room for one, that’s o.k. too. Transport, if needed, in the area can be arranged without charge.

A Plea……

Please can contributors stop slandering all Spanish people and trying to make us believe all others are Saints.

Yesterday  :

It really is not helpful to anyone and completely untrue. There are people of all nations who are wonderful and not so wonderful to their animals.  Brits included !

Totally agree with the rest of the piece written by the anonymous but not so “polite” as they might think Digamites.

In response to ‘Vigilance in the hot weather’ (July 19th)

At 35deg C in the sun the average car with it’s windows and doors shut can become hot enough inside to kill a small person or dog, in about 15 minutes. Even if one or more windows are open a little for supposed ventilation.
If and when you notice a baby in a car in those conditions, you don’t know how long it has been already. By the time you’ve been in the shop, found a person to make a tannoy call and gone outside again it could be too late. It’s your call. Just walk on by if you like. Or stand and watch what happens.
Or do something. Phone the police. Phone the ambulance. Phone the bombero. Shout your head off. Get everyone around involved. Blast away on your car horn. Shout fire, fire, fire. Get attention.

No-one is suggesting that you immediately smash your way in and hopefully if you did you wouldn’t be stupid but do it as far away from the baby as possible so they don’t get bits of glass on them. They then need to be partly undressed and taken to a cool place, at least with a fan and professionally medically checked. Little brains can be so easily damaged with overheat.

But the main thing is, don’t leave it too long. And when the scum that did this show up, smack them in the mouth!!!! (Err maybe not….)

 RecommendationWanted – Local car servicing/maintenance

It`s  time for a tune-up on my 2012 Mini Cooper, as well as a brake job and probably new tires.  Can anyone recommend a local garage up to the job or do I need to bring it to the Mini dealer in Malaga?

The factory warranty is now up, so back in the US, this is the point when I would abandon the god-awful expensive dealer service and find a reliable garage to do the necessary work at a more reasonable price.  Not sure if that makes the same sense here in Spain.   Responses to macnmum @ gmail.com or DigameXtra if you feel the answer would benefit others as well.  Thanks!

 

 

Recommendation-  White Fly and Prickly Pear Cactus.

Prickly pear Cactus while we might consider them exotic, pretty even, are a menace which is spreading in Malaga and Almeria provinces.  Originally bought to Europe in the 1800´s from  central America fo the production of vegetable dyes (Cochineal fly) they now represent one of our most invasive species. Anyone living in rural areas of la Axarquia this year will have not missed the small white flies that have been flying right through our mosquito netting and dying in their thousands in our homes. Once on furniture and bedclothes for instance you will have permanent staining from the blue red dye they harbour in their bodies.

In Almeria province this problem has been well publicised by the authorities but in Malaga it has not.

I feel that by word of mouth people should spread awareness of the problems that these cactus pose as both an invasive species and their hosting of the Cochineal fly colonies.

What to do?

1)Dont plant them to start with.

2)If you have them cut down and bury the cactus. If they dont have light they will rot but they need to be felled and covered with earth.

3)There is liquid available from garden centers that can be spryed on the plant which breaks down the skin so that the mosture is lost and the cactus `deflates´ and will dry and die but it will need a few aplications over the year and before the summer heat.

4)Try to uproot smaller plants with a pickaxe. The root systems are usually close to the surface and are often easy to pull up.  Let them dry out and burn them when you light your next fire, that will at least disable them.

5)If you have a lot of them work away at them over a couple of years.

6)Tell your neighbours to do the same.

What NOT to do.

1) break off parts of the cactus and discard them in the campo. They will always grow, wherever and in two years you will have a big job where before you had a small one!

2)Ignore them. They spread and as we have seen the resulting white flies are not easy

to live with.

Really, this is a serious long term problem that is only going to get worse without concerted effort.
