SPAIN
The president of Adif reveals that since 2017, there have been 39 total breaks detected on High-Speed train tracks, some more severe than the one at Adamuz: {Trans., summary}
– Adif president Pedro Marco de la Peña {pic} told the Senate that between 2017 and 2025, there were 39 ‘total’ High-Speed track breaks, many more severe than the Adamuz crack. Of these, 17 were in tracks, 10 in rails and 12 in welds. He stated that a rail break ‘is not serious, it is a fact’.
– Track circuits (electricty running thru the rails) can only detect a ‘clear break without electrical connection’ between ends, which these 39 breaks triggered. He claimed the Adamuz crack was not severe enough to trigger the circuit or alert anyone. The voltage dropped from approximately 2 volts to 1.5 volts at 9:46 PM on January 17 and remained at that level until the accident. Adif’s signalling system, supplied by Hitachi Rail, only generates a warning if voltage drops below 0.780 volts. {An arbitrary number set by Adif, what they considered an acceptable risk. Since the voltage remained at 1.5 volts, the system interpreted the track as solid and safe…at least that’s what they’re telling us. -Ed.}.
– He maintained that nobody can prove the Adamuz track was broken 22 hours before the accident, noting that 19 train drivers and an inspection vehicle passed without detecting anything. The only reliable detection method is ultrasonic inspection, performed last September before the accident.
– De la Peña defended Adif technicians who removed track evidence ‘in good faith’ without judicial authorisation. He rejected speculation, insisted on waiting for laboratory reports, refused to resign, and downplayed an EU prosecutor investigation into possible misuse of €110 million in European funds. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/presidente-adif-desvela-que-desde-2017-se-han-detectado-39-roturas-totales-vias-alta-velocidad-mas-acusadas-que-adamuz_6963404_0.html

The CIAF president points to maintenance deficiencies to explain the Adamuz train accident: {Trans., summary}
– Railway Accident Investigation Commission (CIAF) president Ignacio Barron {pic} testified before a Senate commission on the Adamuz train accident (18 January), describing it as ‘fortuitous’ with ‘an enormous amount of bad luck’. Rail breaks occur nearly twice weekly on Spanish networks but rarely cause serious harm. The Adamuz break was ‘atypical’, worsened by a train on the adjacent track. Barron rejected a senator’s claim that infrastructure renewal caused the accident, stating the investigation remains open.
– While Barron confirmed the Spanish railway network is safe and accident probabilities are ‘statistically low’ compared to other European countries, he noted a concerning rise in incidents recently. His main criticism targeted governance: he argued Adif and Renfe should never have been separated and should reunify infrastructure management with service provision under a single command.
– Barron condemned the ‘inadmissible’ number of simultaneous works, claiming ‘much money’ has been ‘badly used’ without proper safety prioritisation. He criticised Adif for withholding Temporary Speed Limits from the public and for not listening sufficiently to train drivers who know track conditions first-hand. Most critically, he revealed that Adif systematically ignores safety recommendations issued by the CIAF after every accident, a serious failure he says must be corrected urgently. For residents, this implies ongoing safety risks and lack of transparency in railway management. ANDALUCÍA
Smaller parties are demanding rent controls as Andalucian elections heat up– Adelante Andalucía proposes to limit rent to 20% of the average income by neighbourhood: {Trans., summary}
– Adelante Andalusia, a left-wing Andalusian sovereigntist party with just 2 seats in Andalusian parliament (in 5th place out of 109 total seats), has proposed a regional rental cap of 20% of average household income per neighbourhood for the 17 May elections, below the 30% suggested by rival Por Andalusia (in 4th place with 5 seats in Andalusian parliament). Candidate Jose Ignacio Garcia argues this follows UN guidelines on affordable housing. Full distribution of parties in Andalucian Parliament shown in image below.
– Using El Puerto de Santa Maria as an example, where average annual household income is €14,350 and a one-bedroom flat rents for €900-1,200 monthly, the cap would reduce a €1,000 rent to roughly €240.
– This would drastically lower housing costs for residents, making rentals affordable for many currently priced out. The proposal links rents directly to wages, rising and falling together automatically. However, it is not current policy but an election pledge. Landlords would face severe income loss.
– Other candidates offer these alternatives: Antonio Maillo (IU/Por Andalucia) proposes a 30% cap, while Maria Jesus Montero (PSOE) suggests building 100,000 homes and providing purchase aid for young people. Málaga and Seville lead the alarming increase in scabies outbreaks in care homes for the elderly in Andalusia: {Trans., summary}
– Scabies outbreaks are rising sharply in Andalusian care homes for the elderly. FOAM, the regional organisation for the elderly, reports 263 outbreaks since 2018, with numbers increasing each year. President Martín Durán says protocols have failed, demanding weekly transparency from the Andalusian government similar to Covid and West Nile virus reporting.
– Malaga is the worst-hit province, rising from 6 outbreaks in 2018 to 26 in 2024, and at least 25 in 2025, but reporting was not for the full year 2025 in the last published results. Seville has tripled its cases from six to 15. Other affected provinces include Almeria (seven), Cadiz (five), Jaen (four), Huelva (three), and Cordoba (one); Granada has none.
– FOAM has contacted dermatologists, who believed scabies had nearly disappeared. Durán calls the situation in care homes “an absolute outrage.” Experts also warn about children, but FOAM has received no data on hospitals, schools, or prisons despite requesting it. The Andalusian Health Service declined to provide information to this newspaper. FOAM demands urgent protocol reviews to address the crisis. A group that used bank cards that were stolen from elderly people in Malaga, Granada, Murcia and Alicante has been dismantled: {Trans., summary}
– The National Police have dismantled a group of itinerant thieves targeting elderly people. Arrests were made in Alicante, but the gang operated across Malaga, Murcia and Granada.
– The investigation began in December in Cartagena. The thieves used distraction techniques, such as dropping an object or asking for help, while an accomplice stole wallets and bank cards. They had already observed victims entering their PINs at cash machines, allowing them to make small purchases, multiple withdrawals, and even access banking apps for fraudulent transactions. Some withdrawals exceeded €3,000.
– The suspects were caught inside a supermarket in Santa Pola, where three men were arrested. One had over one hundred previous arrests for similar crimes. The gang worked in a coordinated manner, selecting victims while they withdrew money or shopped. Their method relied on speed and stealth, exploiting the vulnerability of elderly people. The police investigation successfully linked the suspects to numerous offences of theft and fraud across several Spanish provinces. MALAGA PROVINCE
Showers and a DANA lurking in Malaga- the Aemet forecast before the May long weekend begins: {Trans}
– The province of Malaga begins May with unsettled weather, with days marked by the presence of a DANA (isolated high-altitude depression) to the west of the Peninsula, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). In Andalusia, its effects will translate into cloudy skies and scattered showers, which will also reach Malaga.
– In the capital of Malaga, Tuesday, 28 April will begin with cloudy skies and a probability of rain early in the morning, especially between 6:00 and 12:00. No large accumulations are expected, although light showers could recur throughout the day. Showers could return on Wednesday 29 April, though again weak and occasional. The day will be marked by overcast skies during the morning, before clearer spells open up in the afternoon.
~The weather in Malaga during the May bank holiday weekend~
– Looking ahead to the May bank holiday weekend in Malaga, the first forecasts point to a partial improvement. Friday, 1 May is expected to be a more stable day, with sun and some clouds, maximum temperatures around 23 degrees and minimums close to 17 degrees. However, stability may not last all weekend. The forecast contemplates the possibility of light rain on Saturday, 2 May, while Sunday could be marked by cloudier skies.
– As for temperatures in Malaga, no major changes are expected. Thermometers will remain at mild values, with maximums in the capital between 21 and 23 degrees for much of the week. COSTA DEL SOL
The key project for supplying water to the coast is getting bogged down- it has been waiting for a year and a half to be contracted by the Regional Government for a project almost 20 years overdue: {Trans., summary}
– The expansion of the Verde water treatment plant {pic}, essential for the Costa del Sol’s supply, has been stalled in the tendering phase since November 2024. This delay, marked by numerous administrative filings, reflects a broader trend in regional public contracts and is historically attributable to successive regional governments. The current plant, dating from 1972 and operating at its limit with a capacity of 2,300 litres per second, cannot handle summer peaks exceeding 4,000 litres. The €53 million project would double capacity to 4,600 litres per second, serving two million people, and includes two reservoirs totalling 120,000 cubic metres. The original expansion was suspended in 2009 due to the economic crisis. The current 32-month execution period now risks missing the 2028 deadlines. The inadequate system also prevents water transfers to Málaga city and prohibits stopping the desalination plant to rely solely on the La Concepción reservoir, which often must release water unnecessarily.

TORROX
UPDATE– Investigation under way following discovery of dead body on Torrox beach:
– An investigation is under way in Torrox on the eastern Costa del Sol following the discovery of the body of a foreign national in his 70s on the shore of El Morche beach, on Saturday 25 April.
– Emergency services received reports after the body was found lying on the beach a few metres from the water. The man was alone at the time of discovery. Medical personnel, officers from the Torrox Local Police and the Guardia Civil arrived at the scene where they confirmed the man’s death.
– According to the same sources, the deceased was wearing black shorts and a black T-shirt. On initial inspection, there were no obvious signs of violence, so the initial hypotheses point to death from natural causes. The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation into the incident and sources have said that they believe there was no involvement of third parties. An autopsy will determine the exact causes of death. Your Smart TV can spy on you thanks to this feature– “It’s usually enabled by default”: {Trans., summary}
– Although Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) is not inherently harmful, experts warn it is usually “on” by default on Smart TVs, the controls often hidden deep within layers of menus. ACR automatically identifies on-screen content by analysing audio and video fragments and comparing them against a database, enabling personalised recommendations while collecting viewing habits; this feature supposedly does not examine titles or metadata, {…but it certainly has the ability to do so, and you’ve probably allowed it to do so in the fine print of the User’s Agreement you just clicked through without reading, when you setup the device. It could be activated in any future update, like when the Brain Police decide to monitor your viewing habits for subversive content. It could also facilitate future plans to require a digital ID to access online content. -Ed.}.
– This background process does not affect performance but raises privacy concerns. Disabling ACR reduces intrusive data collection, aggressive ad targeting, and risks from data breaches. Manufacturers allow deactivation; the setting may be located in Privacy or Security menus. Experts advise checking these sections after initial setup and following major updates. While not strictly spyware, ACR’s default activation means users should actively seek to turn it off if unwanted. Princess Leonor will study Political Science at the Carlos III public university: {Trans., summary}
– Princess Leonor will study Political Science at Madrid’s public Carlos III University from autumn, following her father’s example (Law) but choosing a different degree (Political Science). The three-month countdown to her air academy graduation continues.
– Unlike her bespoke military training {pic}, she will follow the standard degree without modifications or subject validation. Her sister Sofía studies Politics and International Relations at a private Lisbon university. Leonor qualifies for early admission due to her International Baccalaureate at a Welsh UWC college, with additional grades from military academies submitted. She will balance studies with limited institutional duties, aiming for normalisation as a regular student.
– After four years she may pursue an International Relations specialisation, like her father’s Georgetown master’s degree.
– The Royal Household describes the course as comprehensive, covering political theory, sociology, law, economics and research methods. A study ranks her among Europe’s most complete heiresses, integrating military, academic and institutional training. The King has officially informed Prime Minister Sánchez of the decision. No preferential treatment is given, though her presence may cause initial classroom disruption.
