SPAIN

Spain seeks immigrants to fill hundreds of thousands of vacancies that nobody wants in the country with the highest unemployment in Europe: {Translation, summary}
– How is it possible that, in a country with three million unemployed, a third of companies say they have problems finding labour? But the intrigue does not end there. Statistics show that Spain has one of the lowest employment rates in the whole of the EU? How is it then that employers complain that there are hundreds of thousands of jobs for which they can’t find people? And, in the midst of all this turmoil, there is a government divided into two halves. One – that of José Luis Escrivá – is committed to encouraging immigration to fill vacancies. The other – that of Yolanda Díaz – which, hand in hand with the trade unions, is calling on employers to improve working conditions and is wary that migration is the solution.
– “We will have to think about why these [vacant] positions are not being filled and whether the working conditions are adequate. The companies say that there is a lack of people, but they do not say where, when, how and why. And we have three million unemployed whom we could be training,” says Cristina Antoñanzas, UGT deputy general secretary in a conversation with 20minutos. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/noticia/5129386/0/espana-busca-migrantes-para-cubrir-cientos-de-miles-de-vacantes-que-nadie-quiere-en-el-pais-con-mas-paro-de-europa/

OCU survey- an Andalucian has to wait five business days to see a doctor: {Translation, summary}
– Five business days is the average waiting time to obtain a face-to-face appointment with a family doctor in Andalucia (4.6 days for a telephone appointment) using the Junta’s health services website or the corresponding mobile application, according to data from a survey carried out by the OCU.
– The survey, released this Monday by the Organization of Consumers and Users, was carried out between March 15 and April 2 among 2,261 people, and reveals that the average wait in Andalucia is similar to the national one, but much higher than the 48 hours of maximum waiting that the autonomous communities themselves set four years ago in the Strategic Framework for Primary Care .
– To go to the pediatrician in person, the waiting time reaches 3.8 business days, one more than the national average (2.9). Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/andalucia/Encuesta-OCU-andaluz-esperar-acudir-medico-cinco-dias-habiles_0_1795321289.html

MALAGA PROVINCE

Health plans to double the number of physiotherapists in Primary Care to reduce delays: {Translation, summary}
– By virtue of the consensus reached by the regional Administration with the UGT, CSIF, CCOO and SATSE, in Andalusia, the current 450 physiotherapists in health centers will be joined by another 570 before 2026. “This is very good news, it means more than doubling what there is now. This is excellent news, despite the fact that even more is needed”, commented the president of the College of Physiotherapists of Andalusia, Juan Manuel Nieblas.
– The province has 92 physiotherapists in health centers and by virtue of the agreement between the Junta de Andalucía and the unions it would double before the year 2026.
– Currently, thousands of people from Malaga resort to paying for physiotherapy rather than waiting out SAS delays.
– Public health in Malaga has 10 times fewer physiotherapists than those recommended by the WHO. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/Salud-duplicar-Primaria-fisioterapeutas-reducir_0_1794121226.html

It’s Just An Operating Expense To Them– Meta (owner of Fakebook) fined record $1.3 billion and ordered to stop sending European user data to US:
– The European Union slapped Meta with a record $1.3 billion privacy fine Monday and ordered it to stop transferring user data across the Atlantic by October, the latest salvo in a decadelong case sparked by U.S. cybersnooping fears. The penalty of €1.2 billion ($1.3 billion) is the biggest since the EU’s strict data privacy regime took effect five years ago, surpassing Amazon’s €746 million fine in 2021 for data protection violations.
– The social media company might have to carry out a costly and complex revamp of its operations if it’s forced to stop shipping user data across the Atlantic. Meta has a fleet of 21 data centers, according to its website, but 17 of them are in the United States. Three others are in the European nations of Denmark, Ireland and Sweden. Another is in Singapore. Full article: https://english.elpais.com/science-tech/2023-05-22/meta-fined-record-13-billion-and-ordered-to-stop-sending-european-user-data-to-us.html

SCIENCE

Sunlight-activated powder disinfects water in just 60 seconds:
– If you leave a clear bottle of water in the sunlight, the ultraviolet rays will kill any harmful microbes in that water, making it drinkable … but it has to sit in the sun for at least six hours. A new sunlight-activated powder, however, does the job in a mere one minute.
– Developed by scientists from Stanford University and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, the powder is made up of nanoflakes of aluminium oxide, molybdenum sulfide, copper and iron oxide. All of these substances are readily available and inexpensive, plus only a small amount of the powder is required to treat a relatively large quantity of water.
– Once the purification process is complete, any leftover hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals quickly break down into water and oxygen, leaving the water safe to drink. And because of their iron oxide content, the nanoflakes can be retrieved for reuse by swirling a magnet through the water.
– In a test of the technology, a small amount of the powder was added to a 200-ml (6.8-oz) beaker of room-temperature that was contaminated with approximately one million E. coli bacteria per millilitre. After the water had been left in natural sunlight for just 60 seconds, no live bacteria could be detected. What’s more, the powder was able to be reused for 30 more treatments.

– Spanish airline, Air Europa, has cancelled 114 flights from its scheduled itinerary for today (23/5) due to a new strike being supported by its pilots until June 2nd.
– The Spanish Airline Pilots’ Union (Sepla) has called for eight new strike days for Air Europa pilots on May 22nd, 23rd, 25th, 26th, 29th, and 30th, as well as June 1st and 2nd. This comes after four strikes earlier this month resulted in the cancellation of 68 flights.

Mid-Afternoon Attack On Pair Of Young Ladies Hiking at Limonero Reservoir: {Translation, summary}
– Two hikers have been rescued from the Limonero reservoir because, according to their statements, they had to jump into the water to escape from four young men who “groped” them and hit them with stones. The National and Local Police are working on the case to arrest those responsible.
– The events took place at around half past four in the afternoon on Saturday 20 May. The victims, two foreign girls in their early 20s, had gone for a walk in the area around the reservoir. While walking in the area closest to the water, they were approached by four young men who appeared out of nowhere. Two of them grabbed one of the women and began to touch her, according to what the victims told the police and the firemen who rescued them.
They started screaming. Then, one of the aggressors hit one of the girls in the head with a stone. They even threw her into the water and, she said, tried to drown her. Her friend had a similar fate, so she threw herself into the swamp to escape. They allegedly threw stones at her and bit her when she tried to get away from them.
– The victims left their belongings on the shore – all of them disappeared, so a robbery motive is also being considered – and with the only phone they manages to keep, they called 112 to ask for help.
– When located, the two girls were very nervous and frightened. They had swallowed a lot of water and showed scratches, bruises and other injuries compatible with the violence of the episode they reported. To get them out of there, the police had to call in specialists from the Royal Fire Brigade of Malaga, who used a zodiac to take them to the shore. Members of the 061 emergency medical service assisted the victims and carried out initial treatment of the injuries they had sustained. Both were taken to the Regional Hospital for a more thorough medical examination due to the head injuries they suffered from the stones, according to their testimony.
– The investigation, which has been taken over by the National Police Force, with the collaboration of the Local Police, is still open to clarify the facts. At the time of going to press, despite the heavy police deployment in the area, no arrests had been made.

Russian parliament chief proposes Polish truck ban, says Warsaw owes Moscow billions:
– Russia’s top lawmaker on Sunday called for a ban on Polish trucks transiting Russian territory and for Poland to compensate Moscow financially for what he said was the Soviet rebuilding of the east European country after World War Two.
– In a statement, Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, said that Poland needed to be punished for having “betrayed the historical memory” of the Soviet Union’s liberation of the country from Nazi Germany with a series of hostile acts against Moscow.
– In comments certain to deepen a feud with Warsaw, Volodin said Poland existed as a state only “thanks to our country”, adding Warsaw should pay Russia over $750 bn to compensate it for Soviet investment in the country after World War Two. RECALLS

Emerade injectable solution in pen: {Translation, summary}
– Used to treat severe acute allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).
– Specifically, what has been withdrawn from the market are the units dispensed from Emerade injectable solution in pen, because after a study in which auto-injectors were analyzed, it was found that they could present some anomalies, which could lead to errors at the time of injection.
– Therefore, the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products has withdrawn all units from the market, which will not have this medicine until the problem is corrected.
– The recommendation to patients who have units of Emerade is to see their doctor for an alternative medication. Once they have the prescription, they will receive their new medication free of charge when they present it at the pharmacy. It has been 10 years since they were in the Champions League quarter-finals, they will now be playing in the third tier of Spanish football. TECH

Why some companies want you to rent the battery in your Electric Vehicle (EV)- battery swapping could change how we pay for the power in our vehicles:
– Picture this…It’s 2030, you’re on a road trip, and your EV battery is getting low. You stop in a city you’ve never been to before, and instead of plugging in, you pull into a battery-swapping station. You press a button on an app and the station platform raises the car, unscrews the battery powering your EV, and installs a new one in its place. In less than five minutes, you go from almost empty to 100% charged, ready to continue on your way.
– The battery you’ve picked up to power the next leg of your road trip isn’t yours. But then again, neither was the one that you dropped off. This is the vision for some companies, including Nio, an automaker based in China. Nio has about 300,000 vehicles on the road and about 1,400 of its own battery-swap stations up and running.
– The ability to rent batteries could mean less stress about battery degradation for drivers. Plus there’s the possibility of customization: drivers could opt for a smaller-capacity battery and upgrade only before longer trips, for example. Life Extension Enthusiasts Group “Zuzalu” Gather at Exclusive Event in Montenegro, plotting to create new country to facilitate advanced research:
– What if I told you there’s a group of people who think death is morally bad – that we have a moral duty to find ways to slow or reverse aging? Who seek to create a new state with its own laws that expedite the development of longevity drugs, partly by encouraging biohacking and self-experimentation?
– A community of such individuals have been living together in a resort in Montenegro {pic} for the past seven weeks. They’ve been sharing ideas, collaborating on projects, running hackathons, and having plenty of parties. They call their gathering Zuzalu. The residents will stay for two months. Each week of the event has a different theme, ranging from synthetic biology to public goods.
– Zuzalu is the brainchild of Vitalik Buterin, the creator of the cryptocurrency Ethereum. But the co-organizers of the event stress that it’s a collaborative endeavor. One of the organizers, Janine Leger, who works at the blockchain platform Gitcoin, says the team wants Zuzalu to be a decentralized community, with little to no hierarchy.
– The conference itself featured talks on the promise of psychedelics, phages, lab-grown sex cells, and the partial reprogramming of cells to a younger state. There was a real mix of people at the event, which attracted people from the crypto and Web3 communities as well as those dedicated to healthy longevity. MiniGolf La Herradura:
Big Fun, Only Two Rules. That’s right. Despite eighteen holes, each guarded by variously sized and shaped obstacles, and involving angled bank shots, curves, elevation changes, etc., there are effectively only two rules. Here we go:
-Rule No. 1: The player is not allowed to stand on the artificial grass; and, Rule No. 2: If the ball is struck such that it leaves the lane of play, it is replaced where it exited and a one-shot penalty is assessed. Let the games begin!
-New Course Record!- You may have heard the old saw (probably spoken in an American accent), that everyone loves a winner, well I think we all know that’s not true. More likely, only the winner loves the winner. Nevertheless, congratulations are in order to Jan of London who shot a spectacular round of 31 while here on vacation (see his scorecard below).
The current junior course record of 41 is held by Harry H. (Houdini?), also from London. Even more remarkable though is that Harry is only eight years old! Well done to both, I think those records will stand for a good long time.
-Is there parking nearby? The good news is yes. The best bet is to park along the beach’s berm which for the most part is free. One important hint: dashed blue lines require a visit to the closest parking meter. There you will find the time table informing you when it is necessary to buy a ticket, (very cheap).
-Location: We could not be easier to find. We are just two small alleys off the beachfront Paseo directly behind the children’s playground, the Centro de Salud, post office and newly remodeled market/food court. Please visit our website: http://www.minigolflh.es for a Google map which pins us down exactly, so to speak.
-Admission fee: Current pricing is: six euros for 12 and unders, 8,50€ for 13 and over. Family discounts are also on offer such as 2 adults and 2 children for only 25 euros. This price includes all activities on the grounds and is valid for the entire day. If your eyes are out on stalks just dropped and you’re in a state of disbelief, feel free to ring proprietor Scott Huston for booking availability and confirmation on +34 603 416 632.
-Opening hours: We are currently open from 11:30am until 2:00pm and 5:30pm until 9:00pm six days a week (closed Wednesday). It is recommended to call in advance though, because I am a one-man band, so to speak, and may be delayed for one reason or another. Also, there may be a private party booked, thus the course closed.
Best regards, Señor Minigolf, Scott Huston / La Herradura

SPAIN

The Senate approves the housing law so that it enters into force on today, 19 May: {Translation, summary}
– This Friday, more than two years after it began to be negotiated, the housing law will finally come into force after its publication in the Official State Gazette (BOE). As planned, the Senate approved the rule definitively on Wednesday without changes, which prevents the project from having to return to Congress and serves to get it underway before the May 28 elections. There were no surprises: the majority that make up the PSOE and its allies from ERC and EH Bildu rejected all attempts by the opposition to overthrow the norm, and partial changes were not allowed in the text.
– These groups voted against the implementation of the law: PP, Vox, Cs, PNV, Junts and other small groups, who shared, among other criticisms, the rapid processing of the law in the Senate, where it was approved as a matter of urgency. The Junts senator Josep Lluís Cleries, who complained of having had only three working days to present amendments, said, “It is a legislative botch job, a law for the gallery, more concerned with the elections, that is why we are going so fast”.
– Along the same lines, PP senator Pilar Rojo denounced the “express processing, with no margin for negotiation” of the housing law, and took the opportunity to criticise the government for making “pure theatre and propaganda” with the announcements it has made on housing in the days that the election campaign has been underway.
– On the other hand, his Socialist counterpart Ramón Morales assured that the right-wing criticisms of the law are aimed at “making noise” and assured that the law will serve to “ensure that people’s rights continue to grow”. Reservoirs fall to 27.72 per cent of their storage capacity: {Translation, summary}
– Andalusian reservoirs currently have 3,319 hm3 of water in storage, 27.72% of their total capacity, and during the last week there has been another decrease of 41 hm3 (-0.34%), which is 1,016 hm3 less than a year ago and places the total water storage capacity in Andalusia at 11,971 hm3.
– In terms of the different basins, the Guadalquivir river basin district is at 24.37% of its capacity, having fallen by 14 hm3 to 1,957 hm3. The decrease in the last week has been 0.17%, with 659 hm3 less than just a year ago.
– In the Andalusian Mediterranean basins, the water in reservoirs has fallen by a further 7 hm3, 0.60% less, and now stands at 412 hm3 (35.57% of its total capacity), down 180 hm3 in a year.
– For its part, the Guadalete-Barbate demarcation has fallen by 11 hm3 in one week (-0.67 %) to 440 hm3 (26.65 % of its capacity).
– In the last year, according to the Junta, these water reserves have been reduced by 171 hm3. The Tinto-Odiel-Piedras-Chanza basin also has 510 hm3 of accumulated water resources (45.74 % of its capacity) after a further drop of 9 hm3 (-0.81 %), whereas a year ago it had 98 hm3 more than now. EUROPE

Dutch farmers ‘preparing for battle’ with WEF agenda:
– Dutch farmers are preparing for another showdown with Prime Minister Mark Rutte over his World Economic Forum (WEF) inspired plan to liquidate over 3,000 farms to drastically cut emissions from farming activity and nitrogen fertilizers.
– Earlier this year, the Netherlands was rocked by massive protests led by farmers opposed to Rutte’s plan to cut agricultural emissions by 50% in the major farming country.
– Despite a recent stunning regional election victory by the Farmer-Citizen Movement, the Rutte government has decided to barrel ahead with their radical climate agenda.
– The European Union has already approved Rutte’s (farm) buyout scheme, misleadingly claiming that it was a “voluntary” effort led by the country’s farmers. Full article: https://thecountersignal.com/dutch-farmers-preparing-for-battle-with-wef-agenda/ & Tweet Link

F1 News- Formula 1 Cancels Imola Grand Prix After Deadly Floods In North Italy: Formula 1 has canceled the Grand Prix scheduled to take place in Imola, northern Italy, this weekend after the region was hit by torrential rains and flooding that led to several deaths.
It’s the second race to be abandoned this season. The Chinese Grand Prix planned in April was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Unlike Imola, the decision not to hold the event in China took place months in advance. Races eliminated at the last minute mean higher costs, with most of the teams already on location. Tennis News- Rybakina Wins, Swiatek Exits Rome Under Injury Cloud:
– Two-time defending Rome champion Iga Swiatek suffered an injury to her right thigh and pulled out of her quarterfinal with nemesis Elena Rybakina, bowing out 2-6, 7-6(3), 2-2 RET and leaving a tournament she has dominated under an injury cloud on Wednesday evening at the Foro Italico.
– It was a difficult blow for Swiatek, who pulled up lame after the penultimate point of the second set tiebreak, and immediately placed her hand on her right knee. When the set was finished she went off court for a medical timeout and returned to play with heavy strapping on her right thigh. After four games in the decider, Swiatek retired, sending the Wimbledon champion into the last four for the first time at Rome. Tennis News- Rafael Nadal calls press conference to confirm he’s OUT of French Open, 2024 will be his final year of competition:
– The Spaniard held a press conference at his Academy in Mallorca where he revealed that the injury that he has had since the Australian Open has not yet healed. It means Nadal will not play the event for the first time since 2004 with Nadal having won a record-breaking 14 Roland Garros titles there.
– Speaking at the event Nadal claimed that he won’t be playing tennis for the next few months, “I won’t be able to play at Roland Garros. This decision was taken by my body. I won’t be playing for the next few months,” Nadal told the press. “I don’t want to put myself in a position to say one thing and to do another thing. My idea is that next year is my last day in professional tennis. I want to be competitive. The chances are higher if I stop now.”

– In his press conference, Nadal, who will be 37 next month, also said that he plans to come back later this year and plans to play next season which should be the last year of his career. “I hope to be ready by the Davis Cup, and I want to play in 2024, which will be the last year of my career. If the economy is doing so well, why do half of new university grads get paid less than €10/hr upon employment?:
– According to Eurostat data, three out of four Spanish graduates get a job within three years of leaving university, however, there are only ten degree programmes that earn Spanish graduates salaries of €1,500 per month or more.

Contact Ruth Forder on 0034 693 715 718 ; Comparefuneral.org
Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

DoctorLaptop’s Computer Repairs & Services: Have your computer properly maintained with an annual professional servicing to keep it clean, running cool and thus extend its life. You don’t wait till your car engine freezes before you change your oil, now do you? If you do, the repair costs far more than the oil changes you skipped. It’s the same with computers. An inexpensive annual maintenance service is far cheaper than waiting until the device is annoyingly slow and popping up error messages, and thus in need of an expensive repair. Protect your computer & your privacy with annual servicing. The Doctor is closed on weekends. I do not work on computers that are more than 8 years old (pre 2015), unless they have been receiving annual servicing by me. Always include the patient’s make and model number when making support requests. DoctorLaptop’s Website & Contact Info: doctorlaptop@protonmail.com or call 675 993 069 after 12pm, missed calls returned asap. My contact details are shown every day in the Sponsor’s Section.

Aemet activates yellow warning for storms in Andalucía:
– The unseasonal spring weather is taking a break. After several very dry and hot weeks, further complicating the serious drought situation that the region is experiencing, the rain could make an appearance in Andalucía starting from tomorrow, Wednesday (17 May).
– Cadiz will be the province most affected. The state weather agency Aemet has activated a yellow level warning on the coast due to the possibility of storms between 6 am and 2pm.

– Aemet currently establishes a 95% possibility of storms – accompanied by showers – on Thursday in Malaga city, especially after noon. On Friday, a high probability of rain of 90% remains, while on Saturday this percentage is reduced to 80% and on Sunday it falls to 65%. ARTIFICIAL INTELLEGENCE (AI)

I swear these guys must read DigameXtra- I made the same suggestion regarding the development of AI Chatbots back on April 11th…”This type of tool, that will certainly be used for fraud, blackmail, and all manners of mischief, should require a licence and bond to access.” From https://digamextra.com/2023/04/11/digamextra-no-2512-tuesday-april-11th-2023/ -Ed.

OpenAI chief goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI:
– OpenAI, the startup behind ChatGPT, wants the U.S. to consider mandating licenses for companies to develop powerful artificial intelligence like the kind underpinning its chatbot, its chief executive plans to tell Congress on Tuesday.
– In his first appearance before a congressional panel, CEO Sam Altman is set to advocate licensing or registration requirements for AI with certain capabilities, his written testimony shows. That way, the U.S. can hold companies to safety standards, for instance testing systems before their release and publishing the results.
– “Regulation of AI is essential,” Altman said in the prepared remarks which were seen by Reuters.
– For months, companies large and small have raced to bring increasingly dexterous AI to market, throwing endless data and billions of dollars at the challenge. Some critics fear the technology will exacerbate societal harms, among them prejudice and misinformation, while others warn AI could end humanity itself. SCAMS

Listen how AI can clone your voice, use it in phishing and extortion scams:
– Dave Hatter of Intrust IT Security says scammers can now use free AI programs to capture a relative’s voice and then use it in a scam call. “With as little as 3 seconds of audio, you can clone someone’s voice,” he said.
– “They can download a speech that you gave from a LinkedIn profile that you did something in public,” he said. Or they could take your voice off a social media post, as they only need a few seconds. Then they can use your voice to call your grandparents or parents, saying you are in desperate trouble and need money. It is especially effective for leaving fake voicemail messages.
– AI is also making it harder to spot phishing emails. Nicoletti says AI tools clean up the grammar and spelling errors that typically help you spot a scam. “It lowers the bar for criminals to create phishing emails en masse,” he said. Blocking specific web-browsers from accessing a specific website, and insisting on no VPN or ad-blocker, is a very bad precedent; that’s like telling people that if they want to enter your public drive-in theatre, they must not be driving a Ford, and their car cannot have GPS or extra fog lamps. What happened to the entertainment industry’s obsession with “inclusiveness”? -Ed.

Black Silkie Rooster: Hi, we live in Rio Torrox overlooking the valley with views to the Alpujarras, quite remote, a beautiful spot. We have 3 Black Silkie Sisters, one of which is brooding at the moment, so we are looking for some kind person who would lend us a Black Silkie rooster for a short while, possibly as short as an hour!
So we could either meet at the BP garage at the Torrox exit from the 340, and to our Finca, or we could come wherever you live.
We would be over the moon and very grateful if this were possible.

SPAIN

Food price increases in Spain continue, but not quite as rapidly in April, rising by 13%, compared to 16.5% the previous month:
– National statistics institute (NIE) data published on Friday, 12 May, showed that families continue to pay 13% more for food than a year ago, but the rise is starting to slow down.
– It is the lowest level since June 2022 and is in line with the forecasts of the Minister of Agriculture, Luis Planas, who for months has been confident of a “moderation” in food price hikes as a result of the fall in the cost of raw materials and fertilisers on international markets. But the drought could cause food prices to rise again with harvests already badly affected and the supply of food decreasing.
– Foods where prices rose the most in April were milk (27.6%), olive oil (22.2%), cereals (18.2%), potatoes (16.5%), pork (16.1%) and eggs (15.8%). For yet another month, the product with the strongest increase compared to a year ago is sugar, which soared by 49.6%. Energy continues to fall (-15.6%), as do fuels (-4.3%).
– But the general consumer price index (CPI) level picked up again in April, closing with a rise of 4.1%, compared to 3.3% in March.

Shock as 44 convicted ETA terrorists to run in elections in Spain’s Basque Country:
– EH Bildu’s decision to run 44 convicted ETA members or associates (including seven imprisoned for murder) as candidates in local elections in the Basque Country has caused uproar across Spain.
– There has been shock and condemnation across Spain after EH Bildu, a Basque political party, presented candidate lists for upcoming local and regional elections that included 44 people convicted of belonging to or collaborating with the Basque separatist terror group ETA.
– Among them, seven were convicted for murder, and each of the 44 has served a prison sentence. EH Bildu is a Basque nationalist, pro-separatist political party active in Basque Country, Navarre, and Burgos. MALAGA

‘Brisa en tu barrio’ (Breeze in your neighbourhood) launches its call for music bands from Malaga and Andalusia: {Translation}
– Next July, every corner of Malaga will enjoy live music in multiple formats thanks to Brisa Festival. Since the birth of this initiative, one of the pillars of its values has been to promote emerging talent through ‘Brisa in your neighbourhood’, a series of free concerts to promote bands from Malaga and other areas of Andalusia.
– This week, through social networks and the official website of Brisa Festival, the call for bands that want to be part of the line-up of ‘Brisa en tu barrio’ has begun. “If you have a band and you compose your own songs, make room in your diary for the month of July, when a new edition of this format will take place. Those interested in participating have all the information at https://www.brisafestival.com/brisaentubarrio/ and on the festival’s social media, say the organisers.
– Brisa en tu barrio’ will take place during the weekends of July and will host dozens of concerts by more than 40 artists, who will perform on stages in Muelle Uno, Parque Héroes del Combate in Teatinos, Auditorio Playa Virginia in El Palo, Parque de Huelin, Tabacalera, Auditorio Eduardo Ocón and other venues that will be revealed in the coming weeks. With this wide-ranging event, Brisa Festival aims to vindicate the quality of the region’s cultural scene while invigorating Malaga’s neighbourhoods.
– In addition to the free programme, Brisa Festival will take place in two other emblematic venues in Malaga. On 6, 7 and 8 July, the Botanical Garden of La Concepción will host concerts by Soleá Morente, Elefantes, La Habitación Roja, Lagartija Nick, El Jose, Melifluo, Alba Lamerced, Rubio Americano and Santero y los Muchachos. The end of the festival will take place on the 21st and 22nd of July in the Plaza de Toros de La Malagueta with live performances by Chambao, Macaco, Love of Lesbian, DePedro, Carlos Sadness, Shinova, Julia Martín and Rosario La Tremendita.
– All the information about Brisa Festival events and ticket sales is available at www.brisafestival.com

EUROPE

EU will force the removal of gas and diesel boilers in homes before 2035: {Translation, summary}
– In its fight against CO2 emissions, the European Union (EU) has set a date for the end of diesel and gas boilers in heating and air conditioning systems in homes.
– The International Energy Agency (IEA) maintains that heating is responsible for four gigatonnes of CO2 emissions per year, 10% of total global emissions. Thus, the EU recommends that member countries introduce a ban on gas boilers from 2028 in new buildings and phase out the use of heating systems that use fossil fuels in all buildings by 2035, and if this is not possible, in 2040.

SPACE

Scientists discover 62 new moons around Saturn, raising total to 145, the most in the solar system:
– Jupiter’s brief but glorious reign as the planet with the most moons in our solar system came crashing down this week as scientists confirmed the discovery of 62 new moons orbiting Saturn, bringing the ringed planet’s total to a whopping 145 moons.
– That’s a decisive leap ahead of Jupiter’s 95 confirmed moons – a total that eclipsed Saturn’s moon count for several months after 12 new moons were officially recognized orbiting Jupiter in late December. Saturn is now the first and only planet in the solar system with more than 100 known moons, according to researchers at the University of British Columbia (opens in new tab) (UBC), who aided in the new discoveries. MiniGolf La Herradura:
With significantly cooler weather forecast, now would be a great time to take an inaugural Minigolf La Herradura plunge.
-How long does it take to play Minigolf? In my experience Minigolf is at its most enjoyable when played in groups of four. Assuming you are either beginners or have played a few times previously, your group should be able to play the 18-hole course in about one hour.
-Does the Minigolf course use a lot of water? Minigolf is simply a game of putting a ball into a hole that is normally guarded by various obstacles. The lanes are made of artificial grass, as is our racquet sports area, and the course is made from the existing land with only gravel pathways added. No water is required for the entire plot aside for the restrooms and decorative plants. No worries, amigos, your consciences will be clear.
-Is there parking nearby? The good news is yes. The best bet is to park along the beach’s berm where oddly enough there are no markings. Please visit our website: www.minigolflh.es where a Google map of our location (contact tab) can be found along with photos, etc.
-Location: We could not be easier to find. We are just two small alleys off the beachfront Paseo, directly behind the children’s playground market, Centro de Salud, post office and children’s’ playground.
-Admission fee: Our spring pricing is: six euros for 12 and unders, 8,50€ for 13 and over, as well as family discounts such as 2 adults and 2 children for only 25 euros. This price includes all activities on the grounds and is valid for the entire day. If your jaw just dropped and you’re in a state of disbelief, feel free to ring proprietor Scott Huston for confirmation on +34 603 416 632.

Your skin health matters to us. How you feed your skin is as important as how you feed your body. Why settle for anything less than natural and organic?
As our skin is the first layer of our defence against microbial infections, ultraviolet radiation and environmental contamination it plays a vital role in our health. As we grow older, however, our skin becomes thinner, wrinkled, and more sensitive; hence it requires the use of treatments containing specific ingredients to the care of treating mature skin.
Recognising this need we have created a range of formulae which help
-slow down ageing process by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
-improve facial complexion and eliminate blemishes.
At Moonette, we are passionate about health, beauty and plants. Your skin will benefit from the properties of botanic essential oils combined with a selection of nutrients for deep hydration, cell revitalization and antioxidant effect, all sourced from the finest natural ingredients with gorgeous fragrances.
Naturally, we care about our planet and feel the need to help reduce the sheer volumes of plastics waste that are generated daily around the globe. Presently, we are minimizing the usage of plastic materials in our production while seeking alternative forms of packaging. SPAIN

Sanchez Admin Has Still Not Responded To Demands Of EU Ministers Regarding Recovery Funds Distribution: {Translation, summary}
– “Zero tolerance” for Pedro Sánchez’s embezzlement reform. This is where the European Socialists have put the spotlight in the final report on the mission of the European Parliament’s Budgetary Control Committee to Spain, the committee who visited Spain in February to scrutinise what Spain’s government is doing with European funds from the Recovery Plan.
– It should be recalled that on his first day in Spain, Monday 20 February, Hohlmeier had already expressed concern about Pedro Sánchez’s controversial reform that reduces penalties for civil servants who embezzle public funds, aimed at softening sentences for his Catalan pro-independence partners, to the First Vice-President for Economic Affairs, Nadia Calviño, behind closed doors, and warned: “There can be no exceptions in embezzlement”, as reported by Vozpópuli.
– Calviño turned a deaf ear and mentioned the anti-corruption measures that have been approved under the Recovery Plan. When the MEP reminded her of the statements made by the Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, who looks askance at the reform, Calviño threw the baby out with the bathwater and called on her to ask the Minister of Justice.
– The next day, the EPP MEP went back to the Social Security Minister, José Luis Escrivá, with the same result.
– This Wednesday, Hohlmeier has denounced in a press conference that three weeks ago she asked the Minister of Economic Affairs, Nadia Calviño, for the information on the money executed, and she still has not received it. According to Hohlmeier, Calviño promised to give the “real” figure to the European Parliament to be included in the report on the Budgetary Control Committee’s mission to Spain, a document that has not yet been published.
– On 26 April, two months after the MEPs’ media visit, Monika Hohlmeier assured that she had held talks with Calviño about the draft report, to which Vozpópuli had access, and that the minister had promised to provide the real figure for the European funds that have already reached the economy, an issue that remained unresolved during their meetings in Madrid.
– However, to date, and three weeks after that last request, the chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Budgetary Control says she still does not have any figures. “This is our criticism,” said Hohlmeier.
– On Wednesday, she explained that during her visit to Spain she asked about “the real spending of the money”, and the minister’s response was that the government had received 40 billion from the EU and “most of it” had been given to the Autonomous Regions to manage. “So I said: ‘OK, but what have the regions spent?
– “I asked three weeks ago again, but we have not received a figure. That’s why we asked the European Commission to intervene, we want to know the real figure of European funds spent in Spain. That is the criticism we still have. And I hope that the European Commission will clarify it,” he added. Unions call first ever strike in Social Security history over “lack of commitment” at the agency: {Translation, summary}
– The CC OO and CSIF unions have called strikes, in the form of partial stoppages on Fridays in May, in all Social Security centres due to “the deterioration of one of the public services most in demand by citizens”.
– “The lack of staff, the ageing of the workforce, the delay in the management of benefits and the failure to comply with laws and agreements on personnel matters force us to call the first strike in the history of this body,” the two unions said in a joint statement on Thursday.
– The strikes will take place every Friday in May, from 10.30am until 11.30am. The unions criticise that the “lack of commitment” of the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration has led to a “chaotic” situation in which they can only “raise the level of demands”. New drop in petrol prices at the pump- diesel now eight weeks down and 16% cheaper than a year ago: {Translation, summary}
– The collapse in petrol prices at the pumps seems to have no bottom. Petrol now costs an average of 1.599 euros per litre and diesel 1.433 euros, after a respective fall in the last week of 2.6% and 4.2% respectively, according to the European Union (EU) Oil Bulletin published on Thursday with data collected at more than 11,400 service stations in Spain between 2 May and 8 May.
– Gasoline is now in its third consecutive fall and is at the same level as on 2 January, the last week in which the 20 cent reduction approved by the government was in force when the war in Ukraine broke out and fuel prices soared; diesel has not reached such a low level since the same month in 2022, almost a year and a half ago, after eight weeks of falling prices.
– The reductions come hand in hand with a fall in the markets in the price of a barrel of Brent oil, which has also fallen in recent weeks: on Wednesday it closed on the London futures market at 76.38 dollars, 1.34% less than at the end of the previous session, due to the prospect of further interest rate rises, according to analysts.
***Petrol and diesel prices today***
– The price of petrol and diesel today, Thursday 11 May: cents per litre. Compared to a year ago, when the discount was in force, petrol now costs 2.5% less and diesel 16.25% less, while compared to the beginning of 2023, petrol costs 15.6% more and diesel 1.9% less. At current prices, filling up a 55-litre tank with petrol costs 87.95 euros and filling up with diesel costs 78.82 euros, a drop of more than 4 euros for petrol and 15 euros for diesel compared to a year ago. ANDALUCIA

Andalucía’s Olive Harvest Facing ‘Catastrophe’:
– The lack of rainfall and unusually high temperatures for this time of year are threatening the future of a key sector of the Spanish economy: olive groves. Spain is the world’s largest producer of olive oil, but producers fear a situation of true “catastrophe” in just a few weeks if the situation remains the same.
– According to the Spanish meteorological agency AEMET, accumulated precipitation since October 1 has been 25% lower than normal throughout Spain and 50% lower in most of Andalucia, where reservoirs are only 25% full.
– Rafael Sánchez de Puerta, director of Dcoop, the leading olive-growing cooperative in Spain, believes that “looking at the forecasts, it is almost a fact: it will be another bleak year.” If the predictions come true, it could mean the end of many olive plantations. CLIMATE CHANGE

Spain to spend €2 billion to tackle drought: Spain’s cabinet on Thursday approved measures worth more than €2 billion to alleviate the impact of a prolonged drought that has hit its key agricultural sector. The bulk of the money, €1.4 billion ($1.5 billion), will be earmarked to build new infrastructure, such as desalination plants {pic}, to boost the amount of available water, the government said in a statement. Another €784 million will be used to help farmers and ranchers cope with the lack of precipitation which has decimated crops and driven up the cost of livestock feed. Government will prohibit work outdoors with a red or orange alert for heat: {Translation, summary} The second vice president, Yolanda Díaz, has advanced a modification of the occupational risk prevention regulations that will prohibit, among other things, working outdoors during workdays “when there is an orange alert or red alert” due to heat by the Spanish Agency for Meteorology (Aemet). Trade Union Strike Averted: {Translation}
– The CCOO and UGT unions and the CEOE-Cepyme employers have signed the new agreement for employment and collective bargaining (AENC), which establishes a wage increase of 4% in 2023 and 3% in 2024 and 2025, as well as a 1% revision clause based on inflation.
– Negotiations on this agreement, which serves as an indication in collective bargaining, were blocked for months due to the employers’ refusal to include wage revision clauses linked to the rise in prices, something that is finally included in the agreement, and due to the refusal to agree on a rise for the past year, which has been left out of the new AENC. ANDALUCIA

How to vote by post in Spain’s regional and local elections:
– On May 28th, local elections (known as elecciones municipales in Spanish) will be held throughout Spain. There will also be regional elections in most autonomous communities held on the same day, though not in Andalucia.
– The deadline for requesting a postal vote is May 18th 2023.
– By e-mail: You can request your postal vote through the Correos website, where you must prove your identity through an online ID such as the digital certificate of Cl@ve password and provide the address to which you want the voting material to be sent.
– At the post office: You can also request your postal vote in person at any post office in Spain. This must be done personally by each voter, except in case of illness or disability (proven by official medical certification) when the request can be made by an authorised third party. In order to speed up the procedure, Spain’s national postal service offers the option of making an appointment beforehand, which you can do through the Correos app or website.
You will need valid ID and to prove your address. Full article: https://www.thelocal.es/20230510/how-to-vote-by-post-in-spains-regional-and-local-elections

Change of weather in south of Spain this weekend with drop in temperatures and possible rain:
– Spain’s state weather agency Aemet is warning that the weather in Andalucía could take a turn for the worse from this Friday, after several weeks of summer-like temperatures.
– In Malaga province, Aemet forecasts a drop of up to 9 degrees depending on the municipality. Therefore, in Malaga city the maximum temperature will go from 30 degrees at the beginning of the week to 21 degrees on Saturday or 20 this Sunday. The minimums will also drop, from the 19 degrees this Wednesday to the 14C expected this coming Sunday.
– There is a probability of rain on Friday night or Saturday in the Andalusian provinces of Almeria, Granada and Malaga. If it does come, the rainfall in Malaga is not expected to amount to much, and it would occur mostly on the coast,” said José Luis Escudero.
For now, Aemet sets these possible showers in Malaga city at 80% until 12noon on Saturday. Before dropping to 50%. A token 20% probability is set for Sunday, when a day of sun and clouds is expected.

Almost 50 people in Malaga province arrested in major mobile phone repair investigation for using counterfeit parts:
– During Operation Rotten, more than 14,000 spare parts were seized that authorities claimed were copies of original brands such as Apple, Samsung and Huawei.
– The investigators focused on Malaga-based company Klicfone, which was allegedly importing parts from the Asian market and then selling them to a leading mobile phone repair company – Manzana Rota – with franchises in different areas of the country. According to sources, they have shops and franchises in all eight provinces of Andalucía, as well as Murcia, the Basque Country, Castile and Leon, Aragon and the Asturias. In total, 35 premises were inspected, of which 15 were in Malaga. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/almost-people-malaga-province-arrested-major-mobile-20230510133136-nt.html

ALPUJARRA

Extreme race with 750 athletes will run day and night through 20 municipalities of the Alpujarra this weekend: {Translation, summary}
– The second edition of the Ultra Trail ’20 leguas de la Alpujarra’ will be held from 12 to 14 May with the participation of 750 athletes over a distance of 100 kilometres and 4,500 metres of elevation gain, combining competition with the dissemination of the natural and cultural heritage of the Alpujarra region.
– This event is very demanding on a physical level and is divided into three types of participation designed to offer a sporting experience adapted to the different levels of preparation of the population.
– The first modality, 20 “leguas”, is considered by the organisers of the event as the queen modality, with a total of 100 kilometres and an approximate accumulated difference in altitude of 4,500 metres.
– The second modality, 10 “leguas”, has been created to open up the event to other participant profiles and the aim is to bring together the same technical characteristics, landscape and terrain as the queen modality, adapting to those participants who cannot cope with events of more than 15-20 hours. It is a 50 kilometre route with a target level of 2,000-2,500 metres.
– The third and last modality, 2 “leguas”, called the family distance of the project, is 10 kilometres long and is designed for all kinds of public. The aim of this last event is that those who are just starting out in trail running or those who specialise in short and fast distances can take part in this project and enjoy the Alpujarra of Granada on the day of the race. CÁDIZ

A hospital in Pascual confuses 14 year old’s meningitis symptoms with having been “raped and on drugs”, and the young woman dies: {Translation, summary}
– A young girl from Sanlúcar de Barrameda in Cádiz, and only 14 years old, died “because”, according to the Bufete Ortiz Abogados, it seems that “in the Emergency Department of the Hospital Virgen del Camino de Sanlúcar, they confused her meningococcal meningitis with a diagnosis of having been drugged and raped, activating the protocol Violence against Minor. This wasted precious time, the so-called golden hour, in finding the diagnosis”. After 2 days of tests pursuing the incorrect diagnosis, she died.
– The aforementioned hospital centre assures that “the action followed” by it “was evaluated at the time, by the corresponding hospital commission, not detecting anomalies” in it. HUELVA

Public toilets for dogs? They are already a reality in Huelva:
– The capital of Huelva has ten units of ‘Pipiguau’, a new urban furniture promoted by the Huelva City Council which will be used to collect dog urine and which has already been distributed in different neighbourhoods of the city.
– As the councillor for Urban Habitat and Infrastructures, Esther Cumbrera, pointed out, “the municipal priority with this new and modern service is to contribute to keeping the streets clean”. In this way, in collaboration with the Huelva-based company Pet Solution Urban, an expert in the construction of this type of street furniture, the Council has proceeded to install the first ten units in different parts of the city, with the aim of gradually increasing them.
– As for the most noteworthy aspects of this furniture, it is worth highlighting that it is a canine urinal that attracts the animal to encourage it to urinate in its space. Thus, for the Town Hall it has been essential “to opt for the most innovative means that have come onto the market, and which have also formed part of a pilot project that was launched previously and which managed to respond to the expectations of users with dogs”.
– Finally, the City Council would also like to ask for the collaboration of the citizens in order to make the correct use of the ‘Pipiguau’, with the aim of being able to contribute together so that this revolutionary service can fulfil its important role in the city.

UK

Baby born from three people’s DNA in UK first: A baby has been born using three people’s DNA for the first time in the UK, the fertility regulator has confirmed. Most of their DNA comes from their two parents and around 0.1% from a third, donor woman.
The pioneering technique is an attempt to prevent children being born with devastating mitochondrial diseases.
– Fewer than five such babies have been born, but no further details have been released.
– Mitochondrial diseases are incurable and can be fatal within days or even hours of birth. Some families have lost multiple children and this technique is seen as the only option for them to have a healthy child of their own. There is technically a risk of “reversion” where any defective mitochondria that are carried over could gain in number and still result in disease. Tennis News- Madrid Open overshadowed by allegations of sexism and gender inequality- World’s top female tennis players have voiced their outrage:
– After the trophies were handed out to the winning doubles pair of Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad-Maia, as well as the runners-up Gauff and Pegula, the players were waiting for their customary victory speeches. They smiled and held their trophies in front of assembled photographers, but not a microphone was in sight.
– It is understood that WTA representatives were informed of the decision to deny the female doubles players from taking the mic only midway through the doubles final, leaving no opportunity to react. Meanwhile the finalists of the men’s doubles and both singles tournaments were all given the opportunity to speak after their respective matches. While tournament organizers have given no indication as to why the four female players were muted, the events on Sunday had been preceded by serious allegations of sexism and gender inequality throughout the two-week event. Part of the criticism was the discrepancy in the size of cakes handed out to the male and female singles winners.
– Belarus-born Aryna Sabalenka was given a single-tier cake after winning the women’s final, while men’s singles winner Carlos Alcaraz was given a multi-tier cake that had to be held up by several people for a photo opportunity. Fans and players were left fuming over the optics the two photos displayed, leaving many to call out the tournament for being misogynistic.
– The event assigned all-female ball crews to men’s matches played on the grandstand court, with the uniforms featuring short, pleated skirts and crop tops. Fans had previously noted that there appeared to be two different variations of the ball kids’ outfit, one which saw the girls don the often labelled “sexist” outfits and another more standard selection of a shirt and shorts, worn for women’s matches. Following the backlash, the outfits were changed for the men’s final between Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, with the ball girls instead wearing three-quarter-length skirts as they worked the match.
