 New Digital Electricity Meters

Just got back from UK.  I notice we have a new meter and when we arrived it had a bright red light on.  It’s off now.  Can somebody explain in a nutshell how these things operate please.

Why does it flash sometimes, why is the light on sometimes?

Recommendation- Car Cleaning

Normally I take someone else’s “recommendations” with a pinch of salt, as I am sceptical as to the motives of the “Recommender”!

However, a few months ago, I read a recommendation for Car Clean Malaga, and owning a 6 year old Ford Focus that hardly had a panel that was not bashed or scraped, I decided to take the plunge and contact Warren to see what he could do.

Talk about turning “A Pig’s Ear into a Silk Purse” (figuratively speaking)!

When I got the car back, I was astonished at what he had achieved in such a short time.

All the scratches, scrapes, minor dents and dull paintwork were gone, and the car glistened with a deep polish shine!

Plus, the interior was spotlessly clean and the engine bay glistened like new.

Suffice to say, I was so impressed, that I gave him my 15 year old VW nine-seater Minibus to work on.

Again he did a fabulous job, inside and out, including a “bottom half” re-spray and it came back looking like it had had a complete body re-spray.

The inside had been deep cleaned and the upholstery looked new.

Many of our friends have commented on how good the “Bus” and Focus now look, and are now in contact with Warren directly !

Recently, we looked at replacing my wife’s pride and joy, her 20 year old yellow Renault 19 Cabriolet, which we lovingly call “The Skip”.

We visited many car showrooms, but we couldn’t find anything she liked, apart from a Audi A4 Cabriolet.

However, it was over 10 years old, on Belgium plates and had 240,000 klms on the clock. The price, ………………. €12,000;  just plain ridiculous!

So, we decided to put “The Skip” through an ITV, to see if it had any major faults. However, it sailed through; and so it too has been given to Warren to work his magic.

This will, no doubt, be his biggest test to date!

It’s having a “recycled” leather interior and seats, (which I collected from Madrid), and the dull and flaking paintwork will be given the full “Car Clean Malaga” treatment.

I fully expect it will come back looking fabulous and I should be the recipient of loads of those elusive “Brownie Points”. (Photos to follow later)

All-in-all, it will have cost us much less to have our three cars given the “Warren” treatment, than trade in and buy a replacement.

Endesa Breakthrough

Dear Digamites,
Just to let you know. After 18 months of trying to get registered on the Endesa website (so I can finally get a copy of my bills) I used the android phone app instead and it worked!!!!
Thought I’d let you all know. I bet I’m not the only one to have problems with their site. The app also allowed me to switch tariff (which the website couldn’t handle either).

What’s on-Art Exhibitiions – Nerja

 

Just want to advertise some super exhibitions in Nerja currently going on.  Juan Otega Montesinos has over 100 paintings on display in the art gallery at the new museum at the far end of Plaza de Espana.  You have to pay to go into the museum but the art exhibition is free of charge and is downstairs on floor -2.  Well worth a visit, 9.00 – 16.00 every day.  The other is a superb family of artists at the gallery  (free entrance)  just up from the main post office on Almirante Ferrandiz in Nerja, wonderful paintings and fabulous sculptures….and I also have a couple of paintings I am selling which are temporarily in the window of the little arcade just up from the Post Office, whilst Sevillano restaurant is being knocked about.  Here they are attached. Oil paintings, 30 x 40 cm, framed,

For those of you not acquainted with what I do, I turn very tired cars into sparkling vehicles to be proud of. I can often bring sun faded paint back to a high lustre and also apply protective coatings which prevent/slow down the fading process.

I also carry out paint correction to blemishes scratches and small dents etc. I get your paint colour matched to factory spec and then apply it to your vehicle in a number of methods depending on the defect, from airbrushing to full panel spray. I use PH neutral products, which all enhance the finish of your vehicle without stripping off any protective barriers.

I only use the best products on the market many of which are imported from America. I have bought and own the very best tools in the industry and have invested €000’s to enhance and preserve the interiors and exteriors of any vehicle.

I can re colour faded bumpers, trim and restore faded headlights, which is a frequent problem out here.  I also machine polish cars, to bring the paintwork back to its former glory.

I can also do general car valeting, to a very high standard, which wont cost you a fortune. The entire car is cleaned including engine bay, door shuts, air vents (with small detailing brushes etc) the car will arrive back to you spotless, with a full protective coat of wax.

So if you have an old car which runs well but looks a little scabby in places then I am the man for you.

Equally I work on many high end supercars.

I tell all my customers the same, “If for some reason, you are not happy with the work I have carried out, I will continue until you are happy or you don’t pay me.”

Recommendation –Opinion Needed

Does anyone have experience of buying items from out of the EU and having them shipped here. My specific problem is I have bought a couple of low cost items (below €100) on eBay and the courier (DHL) is trying to charge me almost the same value of the goods in duty and administration charges. I was of the belief that goods that were under the value of €150 were not eligible to be charged duty/import tax on it was only for higher value goods. The item in this case was £54 and the duty and admin costs that they are trying to levy/extort from me is €49.99.

Recommendation –First aid course run by Jason Bland a fully trained professional Chemist.

We attended this basic course first which was conducted with ease, sense of humour knowledge and confidence.

The content, Jason’s  experience and skill were invaluable, interesting and informative. We were encouraged to practice what we were being taught enabling us to get to grips with the theory, medical terms and most of all the importance of following the procedure to keep the patient in a recovery position until the ambulance arrives.

Most of us are either nervous or ignorant when a tragic situation happens, be it in our home or when we are out and about in the town. This course has given us the basic knowledge and understanding to follow the correct process and assurance that we could save a life and keep a casualty comfortable and relaxed.

What’s on –  get to know Malaga´s prehistoric times 

Archaeological site Peñas de Cabrera

Discover, enjoy and experience the neolithic paintings within the province, under the guide of Dr. Rafael Maura, specialist in prehistoric art. First, we will get to understand the context and significance of these paintings through a Power Point presentation. The following day, we will visit the rocky outcrops of the prehistoric site of Peñas de Cabrera, where we will also experiment with pigments and utensils that were used to create these works.

The archaeological site Peñas de Cabrera, containing numerous rock shelters, is located in the municipality of Casabermeja(Spain). The entire surrounding area of Las Peñas de Cabrera, rife with natural minerals, rocks and fossils, is named after one of its districts of the same name. The entire complex of mountains and valleys consists of many shelters revealing rock art of paintings and engravings.

In the early 1970s the University of Málaga began research in Peñas de Cabrera, focusing particularly on its rock and cave paintings. Thereafter the area became well known to the scientific community, as the University had laid the groundwork for all subsequent exploration. The shelters and caves were later studied by eminent researchers who carried out archaeological surveys, tracings, and topographical mappings and drew up an inventory of rock and cave paintings. One hundred and thirty five cave paintings spread out over twenty shelters were discovered.

As of 2016 thirty-two rock shelters featuring paintings, engravings and archaeological material, mainly ceramic and flint (Silex), have been recorded. Alongside these are also a number of shelters being studied that show scientific potential, but which are pending investigation depending upon the results of further archaeological surveys.

This extraordinary opportunity is limited to 8 participants.

Saturday 5th November: Stop by the organic market at Garden Centre El Algarrobo (A-356 Velez to Viñuela, opposite Renault Trucks) this morning from 10:00h to 14:00h, for some delicious organic produce and skilful local handicrafts.

There’s a great range of of organic produce including local, blue and raw milk cheeses, wood oven breads, fruit and vegetables, flours, pulses, seeds, sugar and rice, pasties, pies, biscuits and cakes, organic free-range eggs, vegetarian, vegan and super foods, curry pastes, jams, chutneys, spicy sauces, olive oil, artesan beers, chocolate plus raw treats.

What’s on- Wood Fired Oven Cookery Workshop at Casa Montes Negros

Wood oven baking is not just for making that perfect crispy pizza! Through a delicious menu, we explore the many recipes that can be made once you have fired up the wood oven. All the recipes can be adapted for use in a regular oven too, and the workshop is suitable for both novices looking for some basic recipes and experienced cooks looking for new ideas or just a great day out with like minded foodies!

What’s on – November Jobs in the Mediterranean Garden.

The clocks have gone back. That makes it easier to get up in the mornings and even easier, in the evenings, to snuggle into an armchair next to the fire with a glass of red wine and good book. November daytimes can often framed by deep cerulean skies; chilly evenings out in the streets are warmed by roasted chestnuts. Jeans and jumpers seem like fun – for a while!

It’s also the month when we can hope for, and expect, heavy rains. The campo and our gardens soak it up like a massive sponge and plants loom large and lush again.

November is the most important month for planting and pruning.

 

Planting: Carry on planting – it really is important to get things settled in early in the season. In northern Europe, main planting season is springtime but here, in our Mediterranean climate you are far better to plant in autumn and through our mild winters. The only exceptions to this would be the more tropical plantings like palms and those with large leaves like bananas. These type of plants are often best planted in very early spring when the worst of the cold weather has passed. Because they are tropical, they will not make root growth during the colder months and often just sit there until the weather warms up again. Some people prefer to leave mango and citrus plantings until spring for the same reason but these are semi-tropicals and, unless you live in a really cold area, I always feel the benefit of the winter rains outweighs other considerations. And don´t forget bulbs for autumn planting/spring flowering that I mentioned last month – still plenty of time to plant them.

Pruning: As the leaves tumble down, you can be sure that your deciduous plants are winding down for winter. When they are dormant and sap levels are at their lowest, is the time to prune. Always follow the moon – it´s the way of Mediterranean people and those with ancient wisdom so why should we think we know better! Prune by a waning moon – the sap will run freely when the moon is rising and damage plants. Pure logic!

Bear in mind that plants that flower or fruit very late/early in the year need pruning at a different time, often straight after the crops are collected or flowers are finished. Thus almonds and vines are pruned after cropping. Citrus too should be pruned after cropping. Roses, which often carry on flowering well into winter, are best left until the very end of December or even into January.

How to Prune: Fruit trees, deciduous or evergreen, are generally treated alike. Remove any dead, diseased or crossing wood first. Then open up the centre of the tree to allow better air flow and less problems with disease. This will encourage more branching outward and fruit will always set more readily where the sun can enter. If any of these side branches are over-long, shorten them back by about one third. Keep stepping back to get an overall view – your tree should be a thing of beauty. Ornamental trees usually need little pruning, just lopping out if they are becoming too tall. Always better though to plan your tree for the position rather than mutilate it later because it has outgrown its spot.

Grapevines on pergolas should have a clean trunk; at roof level, 3 or 5 main framework branches should be spaced evenly. Any side growth on these main branches should be shortened back to 2 or 3 leaf buds – easy as that! This same principle is also used for flowering or ornamental vines.

Fertilising: I mentioned this last month and it´s still not too late to fertilise as the autumn has been mild, but do it now before the next lot of rain.

What to fertilise: Don´t feed staunch Mediterranean plantings – things like succulents, cacti, yuccas, Mediterranean herbs, like lavender and rosemary, tough shrubs like cistus. All these plants form the backbone of many gardens; they are meant for this climate and hate being fussed and spoilt. You should fertilise plants, shrubs and climbers that have very long flowering seasons because they are expending a lot of energy; hibiscus, canna lilies, brugmansias – they are often tired after a floriferous spring and summer. Give your lawn its final feed of the year.

Which fertiliser: At this time of the year you do not want to encourage a lot of lush, soft growth (induced by nitrogen feeds). Floppy, forced growth will only get blown about, battered and burnt by winter winds and can often make shrubs and trees top-heavy and very susceptible to breaking/blowing over. Apply instead a slow-release fertiliser – home-made compost, worm/animal manure (always very well-rotted), or granular feeds which are often seaweed-based. Many liquid feeds are nitrogen rich, designed for quick results, so avoid them at this time of the year.

We are green at the garden centre so we’re always going to say ORGANIC. If you must use chemical products, then make sure that the granules never touch any part of the plant – they will burn. Equally, never be over generous; it’s easy to think giving them a bit extra will do them good but it can be fatal!

Processionary caterpillar: Keep a sharp eye out for their nests in your pine trees and attack! We now have new stocks of Ynject – the (relatively) green way to cope with the pest. It works by a pressurised injection system and you only treat affected trees, avoiding widespread spraying of toxic chemicals. Recommendations Needed –Fibre Optic Advice

As a (very happy) customer of Movistar over the last 3 years, they have offered me the option of upgrading to their new fibre-optic broadband. It will cost a little more each month, but they are guaranteeing 300mb speed.

We currently get around 8mb,which,to be honest, is perfectly adequate for our devices

However, the prospect of a speed 37 times faster is a huge draw!

Do any of you Digamites have experience of this Movistar package, or even experience of such a high speed?……….possibly too good to be true?

I would fully recommend Keith from Cooltec for Airconditioning and attendant sensors.

Keith is English but resides in Nerja, which is a plus for us. He recently fitted air conditioning and sensors in our apartment in Nerja to a very high standard with the minimum of fuss and disruption. We had a very small window of opportunity in which to commission the work. By pre arranged appointment Keith surveyed our property, provided us with a detailed quote, and installation works were completed within the same week. We found Keith to be trustworthy, punctual and reliable. He turned up on time and stuck with the job till it was completed. He was professional, efficient, clean and tidy and courteous throughout. His final invoice contained no hidden surprises.

What’s on– 41 Club Nerja enjoy Ladies Night

The Avalon Restaurant opposite the Marinas de Nerja Hotel was the venue for 41 Club Nerja (Ex Round Tablers) Annual Ladies Night.  This  event is when we take our ladies out for a special evening including a meal and dancing to thank them for their support for our Club during the year.  Chairman for the year, Jim Skinner, gave  a hilarious speach regaling us with his view of how ladies choose their outfits for special occasions!  The response was given by Angela Fornear who gave a humorous reply on behalf of the ladies.  The photo shows someof those gathered on the evening.

We meet twice per month with the first Thursday of the month being our Munch Bunch meeting when our partners are welcome to join us and on the third Thursday when the men have their 41 Club Meeting and our partners get together for a meal in Nerja if they so wish.  During the first week of November eighteen couples are attending our annual gathering of all Iberian 41 Clubs, known as the 41 Club Cluster which is being held this year in Vilamoura, Portugal with over 200 joining the fun.

Pre-Intermediate: Tuesdays from 12:00-13:00 and Fridays from 12:00-13:00 (We have a new book for Pre-intermediate students)

We also offer one-to-one lessons.

Don’t be afraid, come and have a go. We have been teaching Spanish for more than ten years and we know how to make you speak Spanish in a good atmosphere.

Come and try one lesson in a group. If you don’t like it, you don’t lose anything, but if you never try, you will never know!
