Processionary Caterpillars – here we go again !

If you own a pet in Spain, dog or cat, you will know of the Processionary caterpillars that come down from those white nests in the  pine trees any time now and can kill your precious pet.

For what it is worth, here is my method of dealing with the ones on my land.

I have a 5.5 meter pruning pole – cord attached and if you add my 2 meters I can reach 7 – 8 meters.  Out I go with this and a plastic bag, neatly snipping off the nests.

Back at the house they go into an old black plastic builders bucket, quick poke through the white cotton wool nest with a stick and then my secret weapon is the wonderful Domestos Bleach (no connection with the company) that I only see in Supersol.  It is very strong.  Add water to taste and leave to soak.

They are all dead in seconds.  There can be 300-400 in a nest the size of a small loaf.

In the early days I tried a gas torch on a pole – took ages and expensive, and yes I know – the fire risk.

Then I tried shooting at the nests but one is never sure where they end up.

I also tried cutting with the pruner and burning but they are very hardy and I found some survived the bonfire by burrowing beneath the ashes.

No doubt we will hear more on this perennial subject – at least it is cheaper than big game hunting in Africa.

Recently we have had 3 projects undertaken by Sysmartin.

1) Erection of white balustrade to our terrace and repair/replace where necessary ranch style boundary fencing.

2) Complete external redecoration of house including rejas and doors.

3) Retaining wall built to stabilise erosion on drive, caused by rain.

All work professionally executed to a very high standard. They cleaned and tidied up after completion of each job. The prices were reasonable. David, who is in charge, speaks Spanish, his wife Jenny speaks English, Spanish and German.

We have purchased our winter logs from them for several years and find the quality excellent.
