What’s on – The Nerja Players – The Doctor’s Dilemma

On Tuesday 6th February, The Nerja Players will entertain you with a rehearsed reading of a play by George Bernard Shaw “The Doctor’s Dilemma”, Abridged, Adapted and Directed by Ian Mortimer.  The dilemma facing the doctor is that he has only one place available in his special course of treatment for tuberculosis but two candidates. He has to decide which patient to save: a kindly, altruistic, poor medical colleague, dedicated to helping hundreds of the less well-off who come to him for the most inexpensive treatment, or an extremely gifted but also very unpleasant rogue, cheat, womaniser, bigamist and amoral young artist. It is even harder for the doctor to separate his motives for the decision of who shall live as he has fallen deeply in love with the artist’s wife. His problem is discussed amongst his fellow doctors, and – serious as it is – there is much humour to enjoy in the exchanges between them.   Although set in the first decade of the twentieth century, the play contains many allusions pertinent to the practice of medicine today: restricted access to some specialist treatments; performance of some unnecessary operations; disparity between treatments available to the very rich compared with those available to the very poor; the questionable wisdom of the public having easy access to drugs; the latent antipathy between some physicians and surgeons – also between doctors in public and private practice; how some medics use their skills to acquire considerable wealth while others dedicate themselves to benefit the poor and needy; the Press’s ghoulish interest in suffering and sorrow – it’s all there in “The Doctor’s Dilemma”.                 Doors open at 18.30 hours and the performance will start at 19:00 hours and will be held in the Nerja Bridge Club – entrance is through the blue doors at the top of Calle Castilla Perez 1, Nerja. We are between Salon de Juegos and Nerja Realty.
