Dear Readers, I must cut back on unnecessary tasks as it adds hours to my daily work some days. Everyone needs to follow the rules, as stated at the top of every issue!

-Everyone must sign their submissions with a name and location (nearest town). The bottom of every post should look like this: Naythan/Torrox Costa. Do not write an “area”, like “Nerja area”. Covid Andalucia- Andalucía says goodbye to the festivities with 12,341 more infections from Covid and a slight increase in the incidence:
{Translation, summary} 06/01/2022 18:14
-The Kings have left in Andalusia new increases in all the indicators of the pandemic that, in addition, has been accompanied by a rise in hospitalizations and admissions to ICUs. This Thursday, January 6, coinciding with the end of the Christmas holidays, have been registered 12,341 infections in the last 24 hours, compared to 7,388 recorded the previous day. The accumulated incidence at 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants has risen 20 points in one day and stands at 1,575.47 cases compared to 1,555 last Wednesday and very close to the 1,571 positives last Tuesday.
-According to the daily statement from the Andalusian Regional Government Health and Family Council, there have been 8 deaths due to the disease: two in Seville, another two in Córdoba and Granada and one in the provinces of Almería and Málaga.
-At the head of the infections are Seville (2,115), Cádiz (2,030) and Córdoba (1,993), followed by Málaga (1,822), Almaería (1,651), Granada (1,236), Jaén (1,110) and Huelva, which only registered 384 more positives in 24 hours.
-The healthcare pressure continues to accelerate with 55 admissions registered in the last 24 hours, reaching 1,388 patients confirmed with Covid-19. Of the patients admitted to Andalusian hospitals, 200 are in Intensive Care Units (ICU). They are six more than the day before (194). ANDALUCIA

Pharmacists warn against the illegal sale of antigen tests in Malaga province:
Members of the public alerted the College of Pharmacists that the tests are being sold in some hardware shops, kiosks and other outlets.
The College of Pharmacists of Malaga has warned consumers not to buy Covid tests in shops that are not pharmacies. Demand for tests has skyrocketed in recent weeks, but pharmacists said it is highly unlikely that other shops know how to store the tests properly and they could give people incorrect results. MALAGA

Hospital pressure rises with 324 hospital admissions due to Covid in Malaga, which reports one death: {Translation, summary} 06 Jan, 2022 13:19
(This is a bad omen folks. The Junta is paying less attention to infection rates, which are at record levels anyway, and focusing more on Covid hospital admissions and death counts, when determining what restrictions they will adopt. The Junta will next meet in mid-January. If hospitalization rates and death counts continue to rise, we could be looking at new restrictions. -Ed.)
-Hospital pressure continues to increase in the province of Malaga, where 324 people were admitted to hospital on Thursday, 26 more than the previous day, 45 of them requiring intensive care in the ICU. The figure – which is the highest in Andalusia – means that the number of hospitalised patients has doubled in just three weeks, from around 150 in mid-December. This comes on a day when one more death from the virus is to be regretted.
-In addition, in the last 24 hours 34 people have had to be hospitalised, one of them in ICU, bringing the total number of admissions since the beginning of the pandemic to 11,338, of which 1,057 have been admitted to Intensive Care Units, according to data provided by the Regional Ministry of Health and Families.
-This Thursday the province has recovered the trend of infections that brings with it the sixth wave and has gone from 972 positives detected by PDIA (PCR and rapid antigen test) on Wednesday, to 1,822. Tennis News- Novak Djokovic story takes new twists, with three players entering Australia on same visa, while Djok’s Dad declares “Novak is the Spartacus of the new world…”:
-The controversy surrounding Novak Djokovic has taken another twist with the Serbian set to be deported back from Australia. In an extraordinary twist of events, the 34-year-old arrived at Melbourne Airport in the early hours of Thursday morning only to have his visa dramatically revoked.
-Djokovic was then held in the airport and grilled for several hours by border officials before it was announced he had not met entry rules and would be deported. A flight is currently being arranged to fly him out on Thursday.
He has been taken to a government detention hotel while his lawyers have launched an urgent appeal in court for an injunction to halt the process.
-The 20-time Grand Slam champion had his phone confiscated while he was questioned by officials, but as events unfolded his outspoken father, Srdjan, promised a backlash on a Serbian radio station. “This is not a fight for the libertarian world, this is not just a fight for Novak, but a fight for the whole world!” and “Novak is the Spartacus of the new world which won’t tolerate injustice, colonialism and hypocrisy” Srdjan declared.
-And now Ossian Shine, Global Sports Editor for Reuters, has unveiled another potential huge twist in the bizarre saga. “The visa Novak Djokovic was using to gain entry to Australia was the same one used by three other tennis players already granted permission, sources close to Oz Open tell Reuters…” he tweeted. Tennis News- Djok’s Saga Continues- Tennis Australia was warned a month ago that previous Covid infection would not see players granted a vaccine exemption: An explosive email sent by Australia’s federal health minister warned Tennis Australia that a previous Covid infection would not see players granted a vaccine exemption, an oversight believed to have locked Novak Djokovic in a bitter legal dispute.
-Now a letter sent by Greg Hunt to Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley at the end of November has emerged, showing the health minister warned Australian Open officials that a recent infection would not grant players an exemption.
‘The Australian Border Force has advised that people must be fully vaccinated, as defined by ATAGI (the national advisory body on vaccines) to gain quarantine-free entry into Australia,’ Mr Hunt wrote.
‘In relation to your specific questions, I can confirm that people who contracted Covid-19 within the past six months and seek to enter Australia from overseas, and have not received two doses of a Therapeutic Goods Administration-approved or recognised vaccine are not considered fully vaccinated.’ Full article: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10374213/Bombshell-letter-centre-Novak-Djokovic-drama-Australian-Open-Melbourne.html

Sydney Ashes Test match- Day Three: Haseeb Hameed bowled for just six as England’s disastrous batting in this series continues as they try and chase Australia’s first innings score of 416. Australia will look to drive home the advantage they claimed on day two when they get going on the third day of the Sydney Ashes Test match. Usman Khawaja’s ninth Test century helped the hosts post 416 for eight before Pat Cummins decided to declare their first innings at the SCG. Haseeb Hameed and Zak Crawley survived a tricky period at the end of the day but England still trail the hosts – who already have an unassailable 3-0 series lead – by 403 runs. Photo:GETTY. Omicron symptoms- two new signs of Covid variant that can’t be mistaken for a common cold: New data from the ZOE Covid study app has identified two new signs of Omicron infection that affect the body in a different way to other common symptoms.
Tim Spector, Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at King’s College London, explained that more people are now reporting feeling nauseous in the early stages of infection.
Another emerging symptom among people with Omicron is lower back pain. Full article: https://www.nationalworld.com/health/coronavirus/omicron-symptoms-two-new-signs-of-covid-variant-that-cant-be-mistaken-for-a-common-cold-3517669

AU Covid Vaccine Injury Fund Established- More than 10,000 Aussies plan to claim for Covid injuries under the government’s no-fault indemnity scheme:
-At least 10,000 Australians are to planning to claim up to $20,000 under the federal government’s no-fault indemnity scheme for rare coronavirus vaccine injuries.
-The government is currently in the process of developing the claims scheme for people who suffer a moderate to significant impact following an adverse reaction to a TGA approved Covid-19 vaccine.
-The Therapeutic Goods Administration recorded 78,880 adverse events linked to Covid-19 vaccination, representing a tiny minority (0.21 per cent) of the 37.8 million doses administered to 18.4 million people, by November 7.
-Shine Lawyers’ head of medical negligence Clare Eves told news.com.au.,
“The percentage of people having a quite significant adverse reaction is really small,” she said. “But for those people who are actually the ones suffering that adverse reaction, the outcome is quite devastating for them.” “So it’s not just some niggling ongoing symptoms. Some of these reactions have been clots, major strokes, amputations, major cardiac problems, being on oxygen, having severe headaches that are debilitating and (being) unable to return to work.
“So even though it’s a really small percentage of people who we are seeing suffering a serious adverse reaction, the impact to them individually is actually very, very significant.” Full article: https://www.news.com.au/finance/work/at-work/more-than-10000-aussies-plan-to-claim-for-covid-injuries-under-the-governments-nofault-indemnity-scheme/news-story/4d4e8a1ff7489b6f0728766ebee5c8b2

Pre-planning your funeral is a thoughtful and responsible way to show you care about your family.
Funerals are no easy task. There are numerous considerations to factor in, including logistics, food and drink, casket purchase and burial grounds. A loved one’s death brings immense emotional strain to any family, and the question of financing and arrangements only exacerbates the stress.

Purchasing a funeral plan with Golden Leaves enables you to plan, design and pay for your funeral services in advance.

Halting Erosion using Vetiver:
From Vetiver Spain in Sayalonga
Our Nursery is open by appointment. Please email or call first. We have Moringa seedlings, Organic Moringa powder and Comfrey plants. We also have some local trees and some exotic trees from Africa.
Vetiver is a rapid growing and non-invasive sterile clump grass with a height of 1-2 metres and a root system of 3-4 metres in depth. We have been providing Vetiver throughout the EU for almost 10 years now. We are located in Sayalonga where we can plant year round but our best results by far start in February. The reason is that Vetiver is indigenous to India and Vetiver loves the heat of the summer. Use Vetiver cuttings as mulch around all of your fruit trees. Decomposing Vetiver improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away all while helping to maintain soil moisture.
Vetiver is a nutritious and replenishable animal fodder. Horses and pigs love it. We use it in our chicken pens replacing hay because it stops mites.
In the 2 photos below you will see land prepared for Vetiver and the results 2 years later.
We also use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive ornamental hedge.
Here is a link to a short video showing the results.
https://youtu.be/rjTmb_LL2uo
We suggest planting now, as this is the BEST time of the year to plant.

ANDALUCIA

New approach to tracking and monitoring of Covid-19 cases in Andalucía: The Junta de Andalucía has agreed to modify the follow-up and tracking of people with Covid-19, and their contacts.
-The decision, which was reached on 3 January, means that testing for vulnerable people and those with severe Covid-19 symptoms will be prioritised. The practice of following up close contacts by telephone will end and the Junta, in agreement with the Ministry of Health, has also ruled out the quarantine of entire classrooms.
-If a case of Covid-19 is suspected but not confirmed by a self-diagnostic test, patients should isolate and notify close contacts.
-If an individual tests positive for Covid-19 with a self-diagnostic test, they should contact the Public Health Service, preferably through the Salud Responde app, in addition to initiating isolation and control measures. Further tests will be carried out on selected cases where it is required.
-People who test positive for Covid but who are asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms should isolate at home. If there is no reason to consider them vulnerable, active clinical monitoring will not be carried out. However, if a patient is vulnerable, active clinical follow-up will be carried out while they isolate at home.
-Anyone who tests positive for Covid-19 should isolate for a minimum of seven days. For those with severe disease or weakened immune systems, the minimum isolation period is unchanged at 21 days. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/andalucia/approach-tracking-covid19-20220104095916-nt.html

Young Athletes Continue to Have Unprecedented Heart Attacks: Another young footballer dies following a heart attack after reportedly being rushed to hospital at the end of training on Monday, January 3.
This sadly appears to be a growing concern among footballers over the past several months. Last month, two young footballers died following heart attacks. Oman international Mukhaled Al-Raqadi died aged 29 after collapsing during the warm-up before his side’s Omantel League game on December 22. He reportedly suffered a heart attack.
And Marin Cacic collapsed during a training session and was rushed to hospital where he was placed into a coma before he later died aged 23 after suffering a heart attack.
In related news, a British Heart Foundation advert has come under fire for featuring a young girl suffering a heart attack during a football match. Full article: https://www.euroweeklynews.com/2022/01/04/breaking-another-young-footballer-dies-following-a-heart-attack/ & VIDEO LINK

UK vaccine scientist- Continuous boosters are unstudied and unnecessary: The head of the United Kingdom’s vaccine oversight body said regular boosters are unsustainable and need more research.
Andrew Pollard, chairman of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization, said the U.K. should not yet follow Israel and Germany in giving out booster coronavirus vaccines to everyone over 60.
“We know that people have strong antibodies for a few months after their third vaccination, but more data is needed to assess whether, when, and how often those who are vulnerable will need additional doses,” Pollard said. “We can’t vaccinate the planet every four to six months. It’s not sustainable or affordable. In the future, we need to target the vulnerable.” Full article: https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/uk-vaccine-scientist-continuous-boosters-are-unstudied-and-unnecessary

COVID-19

Covid Andalucia- Andalusia registers 71 Covid admissions since New Year with more than 38,000 new infections:
{Translation, summary} 03/01/2022 18:05
-A total of 71 hospital admissions due to Covid have been recorded in Andalusia from 31 December to Monday, a period in which the Regional Ministry of Health has confirmed a total of 38,155 new cases of coronavirus and nine deaths.
-The figures confirm the trend of the sixth wave, marked by the omicron variant, with high incidence and low clinical impact. In total there are 1,179 patients admitted with Covid in Andalusian hospitals, of which 194 are in ICU, 12 more than last Friday. This means that the total increase in hospitalised patients only represents 0.19 percent of the confirmed positives in the last 3 days.
-In terms of incidence, the rate of infection per 100,000 inhabitants at 14 days has risen to 1,519 cases. Cordoba has the highest rate with 2,279 cases, followed by Granada (1,746), Jaen (1,699), Seville (1,424), Cadiz (1,370) and Almeria (1,284). The province of Huelva, which a fortnight ago had one of the highest rates in the region, has once again fallen below the Andalusian average and has the lowest rate with 1,265 cases.
-Three provinces, Cordoba, Granada and Jaen, are above 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants at 7 days.
-The community, with incidence figures below the national rate, will this Tuesday exceed one million people infected since the start of the pandemic.

Covid Spain- Spain records 372.766 new cases since Thursday and the incidence rate is shooting up to the 2.295:
{Translation, summary} Jan 3, 2022 19:45
-Spain starts the year with a new record of incidence. Cases per 100,000 population in the last 15 days amounted already to 2.295, a rise of 520,53 points from Thursday. This flag chains as well more than a week in the absolute maximum ratings from the start of the pandemic. From the days leading up to Christmas, the infections have soared exponentially.
-The number of deaths remains more stable, although since Thursday have occurred 168 deaths because of the coronavirus.
-This Monday, however, the occupancy of the ICU at the national level already exceeds 20%, something that has not occurred since the 23rd of August, a month after a peak of cases of the fifth wave of the pandemic. In total, there are 1.974 patients admitted in intensive therapy. The community that worst situation recorded in his ICU is Catalonia, a saturation of 40%. Source, Spanish

-The first covid-19 data update of the Consejería de Salud de la Junta de Andalucía in this year 2022 has confirmed this Monday 3rd January the death by coronavirus of 3 people in Axarquia, which brings the number of deaths by this reason in the region to 226 people since the beginning of the pandemic.
-The deaths have been reported in Vélez-Málaga, where 2 people have died since New Year’s Eve. The other death has been reported in Nerja. Thus, 109 people have died in Vélez-Málaga since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis and 16 in Nerja.

EU to Introduce New Entry Requirement This Year for Britons & Other Third-Country Citizens Under A New, Not So “Visa-Free”, System: As soon as this system enters into force, all travellers from third countries who don’t need a visa to travel within the Schengen Area will be required to make an application in the system.
Nonetheless, it has been explained that the ETIAS won’t be mandatory for at least the first year of its implementation. The first year will be a transitional phase so the travellers can get familiar with the new requirement.
Depending on the country of origin of each applicant, the form will contain several fields that need to be filled.
The main information that will be required includes biometric data, address, education and work experience, the first country the applicant plans to visit, as well as other background and eligibility questions.
When all the required data is filled in, the applicants will need to submit their applications and pay a small fee. Forms will then be checked through automated checks across various EU, and international databases as well as will be screened for health or security risks. Full article

MOONETTE – Organic Skincare for Mature Skin
We are a Torrox-based company specialising in the creation of formulae which help prevent premature skin ageing. We are committed to making effective products at affordable prices.
Your skin health matters to us. How you feed your skin is as important as how you feed your body. Why settle for anything less than natural and organic?
As our skin is the first layer of our defence against microbial infections, ultraviolet radiation and environmental contamination it plays a vital role in our health. As we grow older, however, our skin becomes thinner, wrinkled, and more sensitive; hence it requires the use of treatments containing specific ingredients to the care of treating mature skin.
Recognising this need we have created a range of formulae which help
-slow down ageing process by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
-improve facial complexion and eliminate blemishes.
At Moonette, we are passionate about health, beauty and plants. Your skin will benefit from the properties of botanic essential oils combined with a selection of nutrients for deep hydration, cell revitalization and antioxidant effect, all sourced from the finest natural ingredients with gorgeous fragrances.
Naturally, we care about our planet and feel the need to help reduce the sheer volumes of plastics waste that are generated daily around the globe. Presently, we are minimizing the usage of plastic materials in our production while seeking alternative forms of packaging. To help reduce pollution we are asking all local customers to recycle or reuse their Moonette skincare containers, and offering a small discount on future purchases to customers recycling containers.

Recommendations & Requests

Carole’s Book Nook:
A happy new year to all Book Nookers. Have you got a book you would like to tell Digamites about? Anyway, here’s three more of mine.
-The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman
I had heard a lot about this book so I thought I would try it even though it was above my usual Kindle budget. A group of residents living in an upmarket retirement community form a Murder Club (meeting on Thursdays) where they try to solve closed cases. Each brings a different angle to the investigation, but then they find themselves trying to unravel murders taking place in their own community! It is clever, as you would expect from Richard Osman, and the plot is lively and complicated, but what I liked most was the sensitive way he portrayed the elderly characters, each one was funny, clever and interesting, drawing on a lifetime’s experiences. There are more in this series and and number 3 is being made into a film by Stephen Spielberg, no less.
-Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan
I was almost put off reading this book by the slow and rather simplistic start, it didn’t seem to be going anywhere. Don’t be put off! It is amazing. The true story of an extraordinary Italian boy called Pino Lella during the last 23 months of WW2. He was living with his family in Milan when he became involved with the Italian Resistance (I didn’t even know there was an Italian Resistance). He helped Jews escape across the Alps and later became a driver for a Nazi General in order to glean information. And lots more besides, both during and after the end of the conflict. If you like true war stories this one is unmissable.
-What Ho! Automaton by Chris Dolley
I recommended Chris in my last Book Nook with his French Fried, so I looked for something else he had written. And I found this; a book that combines the humour of PG Wodehouse and fantasy fiction. Instead of Jeeves and Wooster read Reeves and Worcester, and Reeves is an Automaton, run on steam. Hilarious (and I do not use that word lightly) japes with missing debutants, giant talking pigs, a four legged Queen and lots of snifters, ridiculous double barrelled names and consumption of turbot (for the little grey cells) this is not for everyone but once I got into it I found it highly entertaining. This is a series, too, the first in the Steampunk Mysteries books.

Spain begins to say goodbye to its phone booths: Telephone companies will withdraw from this year the 14,824 telephone booths deployed throughout Spain, after these have ceased to be a mandatory universal service.
The disappearance of the booths will occur at the national level in accordance with the Ninth Transitory Provision of the preliminary draft of the General Telecommunications Law. In this way, the company will begin to phase out all the cabins in the country seven years before they meet their first centenary, as confirmed by Europa Press.
The first telephone booth in Spain was installed in 1928, in the Vienna Park booth, currently known as Florida Park, in the El Retiro park in Madrid. It was a device that was located inside a box that was opened to access the telephone. Full article: https://spainsnews.com/spain-begins-to-say-goodbye-to-its-phone-booths/

UK

The Sunday newspapers spell further trouble for Prince Andrew:
In November 2019, the Duke of York stepped back as a working member of The Royal Family in the hope that such a move would keep him out of the spotlight. Yet more than two years later, Andrew still finds himself in a centre of a media storm, with Sunday’s newspapers promising to be unhappy reading for the 61-year-old.
The Sunday Times claims on their front page that Andrew may be required to stop using his Duke of York title should he lose his lawsuit in New York brought on by Jeffrey Epstein victim, Virginia Giuffre.
The paper reports that Andrew would be forced into “internal exile” should he lose, and would be forced to cut all links to his charities.
Prince Andrew has always strenuously denied accusations made by Giuffre.
Meanwhile, the Sunday Mirror’s front page splash features an interview with Giuffre’s ex-partner who supports the allegations made against the Duke.
The Sunday People’s headline reads ‘Andrew Must Go’ with the paper saying that military chiefs want to end their association with The Queen’s son for good.
The ongoing lawsuit in New York threatens to overshadow what is supposed to be a special year for The Queen and nation. Platinum Jubilee plans are being finalised, with Prince Andrew unlikely to join The Royal Family at any of the public celebrations. EUROPE

France takes over the EU presidency as it’s national election looms: France takes over the rotating presidency of the European Union on Saturday, affording President Emmanuel Macron the chance to pose as the EU’s de facto leader in the run-up to national elections in April.
The 44-year-old has never made any secret of his ambitions to be the motor for further European integration, serving over the last four years as a dynamic sidekick to the more steady German chancellor Angela Merkel in Europe’s power couple. EU states split on classifying nuclear energy as ‘green’:
“It’s too risky, too slow and too expensive,” Germany says — while other EU members have pushed for the bloc to classify nuclear power as eco-friendly for investors. Germany, Luxembourg, Portugal, Denmark and Austria spoke out on Thursday against the classification of nuclear energy as a climate-friendly source of power. Some other EU countries, led by France, are seeking to add modern forms of nuclear energy to that list. France, in particular, has voiced plans to use nuclear energy as part of its efforts to phase out fossil fuel plants that are significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions.
(Spain says ‘no’ to the plan of Brussels to include nuclear and natural gas as energy green, according to sevilla.abc.es.)

Ingka Group said prices would go up around 9% on average across its markets, with local variations reflecting different inflationary pressures, including commodity and the supply chain issues.
“Unfortunately now, for the first time since higher costs have begun to affect the global economy, we have to pass parts of those increased costs onto our customers,” Retail Operations Manager Tolga Öncü said. Tennis News- Humbert stuns Medvedev at ATP Cup, De Minaur beats Berrettini: Russian Daniil Medvedev’s 2022 season opened with a stunning defeat at the hands of Frenchman Ugo Humbert at the ATP Cup on Sunday, while Italy’s Matteo Berrettini suffered a straight-sets loss to Australian Alex de Minaur.
World number two Medvedev had been expected to seal the Group B tie for Russia after Roman Safiullin beat Arthur Rinderknech in the opening singles, but Humbert’s 6-7(5) 7-5 7-6(2) victory kept France alive at 1-1 going into the doubles.
Medvedev, however, changed his shirt and returned to the Ken Rosewall arena alongside Safiullin to clinch the tie for the defending champions with a 6-4 6-4 win over Fabrice Martin and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
