With 40 years’ experience, as an Operational Police Dog Handler/Instructor in the UK, Europe and the Middle East, my presentation will end, giving answers to questions on rectifying problems you may have with your dog.

DoctorLaptop’s Tips #99
Hackintosh- Obsolete MacBook Rescue:
– If you have an old MacBook you have retired because it can’t run a currently supported version of MacOS, there is a way save it. If the MacBook is in good condition, and all the hardware works, a secure, fully supported Linux operating system can be installed to replace the obsolete MacOS.
– Ubuntu, the most popular version of Linux, works well on old MacBooks (Note: Bluetooth and Thunderbolt functions are NOT supported in most cases). Ubuntu looks like Android, another version of Linux, so if you can use a smartphone, you’ll quickly adapt to Ubuntu. Ubuntu is free, as are all programs and apps. Most common apps are available thru the Ubuntu Free Software app.
– You can find info on the internet if you’d like to do the Hackintosh conversion yourself.
– DoctorLaptop can convert your old Macbook for you, only €80. Includes a tour of Ubuntu when you pick it up, just to familiarize you with the basics: connecting wifi, finding settings, installing apps and locating files. I have a 2011 MacBook Pro Hackintosh running Ubuntu in my workshop that you are welcome to come and test drive before opting for the conversion. Back up your data before dropping your MacBook off- the conversion will delete everything on the hard disk! If you want me to save your old data, and put it into your Hackintosh, that costs extra, depending on the amount of data.

SPAIN

The Aemet warns of a strange meteorological phenomenon that we will experience this century for the first time: {Translation}
– From a meteorological point of view, 2022 has been one of the strangest years so far this century in the northern hemisphere. In fact, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the year that is about to end has been the warmest in the historical series, so it has surpassed in average temperature 2017 and 2020, which are in second and third place. Moreover, this has been the fifth least rainy year since records have been kept in Spain, very close to the driest years, which were, in this order, 1981, 2017, 2005 and 1995. This context is related to the warning issued by the Aemet regarding a phenomenon that may occur for the first time this century.
– As the agency explained, in the last 12 months “global temperature anomalies have been detected, so it is likely that the La Niña episode, unusually persistent and prolonged, will last until the end of winter in the northern hemisphere.
– It would therefore be the “first ‘triple’ La Niña episode of the 21st century, which has spanned three consecutive years”, according to the Aemet.
– The WMO explains in its latest bulletin on this phenomenon that “the probability of La Niña persisting during the period from December 2022 to February 2023 is about 75 per cent, and that percentage is 60 per cent for the months of January to March 2023,” it says.
– La Niña is a phenomenon that produces large-scale cooling of ocean surface waters in the central and eastern parts of the equatorial Pacific, in addition to other changes in tropical atmospheric circulation, such as winds, pressure and precipitation. It generally has weather and climate effects opposite to those of El Niño, which is the warm phase.
– Despite being a natural phenomenon, the WMO stresses that La Niña occurs “in a context of climate change due to human activity, which increases global temperatures, intensifies weather events to extreme levels and affects the distribution of seasonal precipitation”.
– Since 1950 there has only been a triple La Niña episode on three occasions, according to the Aemet. In the case of the Northern Hemisphere, such a persistent episode prolongs “conditions that lead to droughts and floods,” says WMO Secretary-General Professor Petteri Taalas.
– In Spain, this has meant that 2022 will end up being the warmest year on record, as the trend for the last weeks of December is more of a temperate environment. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/noticia/5081910/0/aemet-alerta-extrano-fenomeno-meteorologico-primera-vez-siglo/

The price of electricity rises 9.5% on Monday, to 267.09 euros/MWh, 160 euros more than a week ago:
{Translation, 1st 4 paragraphs only} 4 Dec, 2022
– The average price of electricity for regulated tariff customers linked to the wholesale market will rise this Monday by 9.49% compared to Sunday, to 267.09 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), which will be 160 euros more than a week ago, when it was 107.85 euros/MWh.
– In the auction, the average price of electricity in the wholesale market – the so-called ‘pool’ – stands on Monday at 209.3 euros/MWh. The maximum price will be between 20:00 and 21:00 hours, at 245.58 euros/MWh, while the minimum for the day, 157 euros/MWh, will be between 04:00 and 05:00 hours.
– This pool price is in addition to the compensation to the gas companies that must be paid by consumers who benefit from the measure, consumers on the regulated tariff (PVPC) or those who, despite being on the free market, have an indexed tariff, which for this Monday will be 57.79 euros/MWh.
– In the absence of the ‘Iberian exception’ mechanism to cap the price of gas for electricity generation, the price of electricity in Spain would be on average around 326.23 euros/MWh, which is around 59 euros/MWh more than with the compensation for regulated tariff customers, who will thus pay 18.1% less on average. AXARQUIA

Rain expected throughout the week in the Axarquía region: {Translation}
– It’s time to dust off the umbrellas. After a prolonged period of extreme drought, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) expects rain throughout the week in the Axarquia region. The different forecasting models (European and American) show that there could be accumulated rainfall of up to 50 litres per square metre over the next few days, although this does not mean that it will be raining 24 hours a day. In any case, it will rain most in the western part of the province of Malaga. The rains will arrive with the La Viñuela reservoir at 9.2% of its total capacity and only 15.12 cubic hectometres of water in storage.
– AEMET expects cloudy or overcast skies for tomorrow, Monday 5th December, without ruling out occasional rainfall, more likely and intense in the afternoon, which may be locally heavy and persistent in the western half, and occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms and small hail. Temperatures unchanged. Winds from the east, or southeast, increasing with intervals of strong on the coast, and occasionally very strong gusts in the mountains.
– In the regions of the Costa del Sol and Guadalhorce there will be a yellow warning for rainfall which may leave accumulated rainfall of up to 15 litres in an hour. The probability is between 40 and 70 percent. The warning will begin at 18:00 hours on Monday and will end at 6:00 hours on Tuesday 6th, without ruling out that in the next few hours it could be extended to other areas of the province of Malaga.
– For Tuesday, AEMET forecasts cloudy or overcast skies with showers throughout Andalusia, more likely and intense in the early hours of the morning, when they may be locally heavy in Malaga and on the coast of Cadiz, with cloudiness and rainfall decreasing during the day.
– Minimum temperatures with little change; maximum temperatures falling in the eastern half, rising in the western third and unchanged in the rest. Winds from the east or southeast, tending to westerly in the morning, light inland. EUROPE

Ukraine said 507 municipalities across the country were cut off from electricity supplies after weeks of Russian strikes:
– Yevhen Yenin, Ukraine’s deputy interior minister, said hundreds of villages and towns in eight regions across the country remained without power on Sunday after weeks of Russian airstrikes. “The enemy continues to attack the country’s essential infrastructure. Currently, 507 localities in eight regions of our country are cut off from electricity supplies,” Yenin told Ukrainian television. “The Kharkiv region is the worst hit with 112 isolated villages,” Yenin added. According to Yenin, 90 villages were left without power in the eastern Donetsk region and Kherson in southern Ukraine.
– Ukrainians are fearing an especially tough winter as Russian strikes have targeted Ukraine’s energy grid, and further attacks are expected. Full article: https://www.dw.com/en/ukraine-updates-hundreds-of-towns-villages-without-power/a-63980213

Last Pass password app hacked, again:
(I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, the “cloud” is not secure. Apps like this save, or transfer, your passwords using “cloud” technology. Why would you use an app to save all your passwords to the often-hacked “cloud”? Anything you save to “the cloud” should be considered public knowledge. -Ed.)
– LastPass, the well-known password management firm, has suffered a new cybersecurity incident. An attacker who breached its software development environment has allegedly attacked the company again.
– The firm revealed this week that it is investigating a recent incident in which someone had exploited information obtained a few months ago to gain access to its source code, as well as customer data stored on an unidentified third-party cloud storage service.
However, LastPass says its products and services remain fully functional despite the incident.
– The password manager was hacked in August through a breach of its development servers. The company’s CEO, Karim Toubba, reported that an unauthorised actor had made off with parts of LastPass’ source code and some proprietary technical information.
– According to Toubba, the hackers were unable to gain access to customer data because of their ‘zero-knowledge’ architecture whereby they never store passwords. He also swore that there was no evidence of further malicious activity and that they had managed to contain the breach. This was incorrect. This new breach suggests that cybercriminals may have obtained more information than originally stated by the company.
– Looking back through the archives, it can be seen that LastPass has also suffered security breaches in the past. It happened in 2015 with hackers gaining access to its network. Then, unlike this summer, the company did ask customers to change their passwords. Source, Spanish: https://www.escudodigital.com/ciberseguridad/last-pass-segunda-brecha-seguridad-3-meses_53859_102.html

Say good-bye to dry, painful lips. Embrace soft ,silky skin of your body and hands with a natural glow.
MOONETTE – Organic Skincare for Mature Skin

We are a Torrox-based company specialising in the creation of formulae which help prevent premature skin ageing. We are committed to making effective products at affordable prices.
Your skin health matters to us. How you feed your skin is as important as how you feed your body. Why settle for anything less than natural and organic?
As our skin is the first layer of our defence against microbial infections, ultraviolet radiation and environmental contamination it plays a vital role in our health. As we grow older, however, our skin becomes thinner, wrinkled, and more sensitive; hence it requires the use of treatments containing specific ingredients to the care of treating mature skin.
Recognising this need we have created a range of formulae which help
-slow down ageing process by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
-improve facial complexion and eliminate blemishes.
At Moonette, we are passionate about health, beauty and plants. Your skin will benefit from the properties of botanic essential oils combined with a selection of nutrients for deep hydration, cell revitalization and antioxidant effect, all sourced from the finest natural ingredients with gorgeous fragrances.
Naturally, we care about our planet and feel the need to help reduce the sheer volumes of plastics waste that are generated daily around the globe. Presently, we are minimizing the usage of plastic materials in our production while seeking alternative forms of packaging. To help reduce pollution we are asking all local customers to recycle or reuse their Moonette skincare containers, and offering a small discount on future purchases to customers recycling containers.

SPAIN

Long rainy spell forecast from Sunday:
– Spain´s meterological agency Aemet said eight Spanish provinces will be affected by rain and waves today with locally heavy or persistent rainfall on the southeast coast of the peninsula and Melilla, frost in the Pyrenees and intervals of strong wind in the extreme north of Galicia and points in the south. The forecast for Malaga city today is for a low probability of showers while minimum temperatures will plummet to 7C.
– Saturday is expected to be dry in Malaga city until 6pm after which there is a 65 per cent chance of rain. In more westerly, coastal and inland, areas this percentage rises to 90 per cent. Temperatures will range from a minimum of 11C to a maximum of 18C.
– According to meteorologists, the early hours of Sunday morning will mark the start of a long rainy spell. For the coming week rainfall is expected on Tuesday, with an 80 per cent probability of further rainfall on Thursday. Over the next two weeks the accumulated rainfall could exceed 100mm in most of the western half of Andalucía. Why are December 6th and 8th public holidays in Spain?:
– In 2022, December 6th and 8th fall on a Tuesday and Thursday respectively, which means that workers in Spain can take off three days from their annual holiday leave and get a total of nine days off in a row. It’s one of the many ‘holiday bridges’ (known as puentes in Spanish) that can be enjoyed throughout the year.
– They are non-replaceable national holidays, meaning that regional governments cannot swap them for other days, which essentially guarantees that they’re public holidays across the country’s 17 regions and two autonomous cities. That also explains why most shops in Spain will be closed on those days. So why is it that Spain has two public holidays so close to Christmas? GRANADA

Sierra Nevada opens its ski season this Saturday with 1.9 kilometres in the Borreguiles area: {Translation}
– The ski and mountain resort of Sierra Nevada, in Monachil, in the metropolitan area of Granada, opens this Saturday the 22/23 winter season with the opening of five slopes in the beginners’ area of Borreguiles with a skiable length of 1.9 kilometres.
-To service this area, the new Emile Allais chairlift will be put into operation, a six-seater detachable chairlift, one of the great novelties of this season in the Granada winter resort.
– Along with the Emile Allais chairlift, the Al-Ándalus gondola lift, the Parador (urbano) chairlift and the Borreguiles and El Bosque lifts will be put into operation at the opening of the season.
– This opening has been possible thanks to the snowmaking system which, with the latest generation snow cannons installed over the last few seasons, has produced snow at marginal temperatures and accumulated thicknesses of 20 to 40 centimetres, “to open, for the moment, almost two kilometres” in Borreguiles. Work continues in this area and on the El Río slope in order to add more slopes for the long weekend of the Constitution-Inmaculada.
– Likewise, Cetursa will make available to all visitors the activities of donuts and sledges of the White Blackbird, the Russian Sledge and a toboggan area in Borreguiles. Non-skiers will also be able to use the Parador chairlift and the Al-Andalus cable car for a ride. Both users and visitors must wear a mask to go up the gondola lift.
– In Borreguiles the equipment rental services will be operational, as well as the Al-Ándalus gondola lift shop and a new drinks and snack point, among others, and the capacity for skiers will be limited to 800 people to “guarantee the safety and comfort of customers who go up to the slopes”. EUROPE

EU reaches deal for $60-per-barrel price cap on Russian oil:
– The European Union reached a deal Friday for a $60-per-barrel price cap on Russian oil, a key step as Western sanctions aim to reorder the global oil market to prevent price spikes and starve President Vladimir Putin of funding for his war in Ukraine.
– After a last-minute flurry of negotiations, the EU presidency, held by the Czech Republic, tweeted that “ambassadors have just reached an agreement on price cap for Russian seaborne #oil.” The decision must still be officially approved with a written procedure but is expected to go through.
– The $60 figure sets the cap near the current price of Russia’s crude, which recently fell below $60 a barrel. Some criticize that as not low enough to cut into one of Russia’s main sources of income. It is still a big discount to international benchmark Brent, which slid to $85.48 a barrel Friday, but could be high enough for Moscow to keep selling even while rejecting the idea of a cap.

Russia and Ukraine are fighting the first full-scale drone war:
– With hundreds of reconnaissance and attack drones flying over Ukraine each day, the fight set off by a land grab befitting an 18th-century emperor has transformed into a digital-age competition for technological superiority in the skies – one military annals will mark as a turning point.
– In the battle between Russia and Ukraine, drones are integrated into every phase of fighting, with extensive fleets, air defenses and jamming systems on each side. It is a war fought at a distance – the enemy is often miles away – and nothing bridges the gap more than drones, giving Russia and Ukraine the ability to see, and attack, each other without ever getting close. SPORTS

F1 News- Chinese F1 Grand Prix cancelled for fourth year in a row:
– Formula One’s Chinese Grand Prix was cancelled for the fourth year in a row on Friday due to strict local measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, with the sport looking for a possible replacement. Various alternatives have been touted in the media, including Portugal’s Portimao circuit that was used as a replacement in 2020 and 2021 for races cancelled during the pandemic.
– The 2023 race in Shanghai would have been the first since 2019 and had been scheduled for April 16 as the fourth stop on a record 24-round calendar that also promises a spectacular debut in Las Vegas. The cancellation came as no surprise, with the race recognised as being uncertain by Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali in a Liberty Media third-quarter earnings call with analysts this month. TECH

Android App Alert: Remove these 3 apps now.
– Multiple unpatched vulnerabilities have been discovered in three Android apps that allow a smartphone to be used as a remote keyboard and mouse.
– The apps in question are Lazy Mouse, PC Keyboard, and Telepad, which have been cumulatively downloaded over two million times from the Google Play Store.
– None of the apps have received any updates for over two years, making it imperative that users remove the apps with immediate effect. “These three applications are widely used but they are neither maintained nor supported, and evidently, security was not a factor when these applications were developed,” Synopsys security researcher Mohammed Alshehri said.
– The issues could be exploited by a malicious actor to execute arbitrary commands without authentication, or to harvest sensitive information by exposing users’ keystrokes in cleartext. Full article:

Five letter bombs detected in Spain, country steps up security:
– Bomb disposal experts defused a fifth letter bomb on Thursday as Spain stepped up security to confront a spate of explosive devices sent to high-profile targets, including the prime minister and the Ukrainian ambassador in Madrid. Early indications suggest that all five of the packages were sent from within Spain, the country’s Deputy Interior Minister told journalists. Rafael Perez, the junior minister responsible for security, said the homemade devices were sent in brown packages containing a flammable powder and tripwire that would generate “sudden flames” rather than an explosion. The packages were addressed to the heads of the institutions they were sent to. 15 arrested in Spain in inedible horsemeat scam:
– The operation, developed jointly by Europol and the Spanish Civil Guard (Guardia Civil) targeted the illegal sale of horse meat unsuitable for consumption. The criminal network involved in this illegal sale is linked to a number of crimes including food fraud, money laundering and document fraud.
– The untraceable meat was sold on the Spanish, but also Belgian, German and Italian markets.
– The investigation uncovered a large criminal network, which was altering the traceability of horse meat by falsifying transfer and identification documents. During the operational activities, national authorities arrested 35 individuals, including the heads of the network, while targeting 6 companies linked to the criminal organisation. During the raids in Spain, authorities seized half a tonne of horse meat unfit for consumption.
– The suspects acquired horses from across Spain for free or by paying up to 100 euros per animal. Due to several factors, these animals were not destined for the food market and the potential illegal profit was substantial. Once the leader of the criminal network acquired enough livestock to activate the illegal scheme, they set up a complete cattle exploitation facility in 2019 and started exporting the meat to other European markets. Spanish officers raided the clandestine facilities and uncovered 80 horses, which had been abused and were suffering from various untreated diseases due to the lack of veterinary control.

AXARQUIA

Transfer from Nerja’s Chíllar river to Axarquía reservoir begins:
– The transfer of water from the river Chíllar in Nerja to La Viñuela reservoir started last Friday (25 November) to help the drought stricken Axarquía area. Fourteen towns and villages and a population of some 220,000 inhabitants depend on the reservoir for water. However, with no rainfall and the dam at a historic low of 9.2 per cent capacity, water is having to be brought in from other sources, including the Nerja river and reservoirs in Malaga city.
– Work to connect the wells began almost two decades ago during the drought of 1995 and has been completed in the last five years. Between them the two underground reserves have enough water to supply up to 5.2 cubic hectometres of water per year. Full article:

Germany To Facilitate Rules for Internationals to Obtain Citizenship: The federal government of Germany has unfolded its plans to introduce new changes to its immigration law, among others, to make it easier for internationals to obtain citizenship. “We are now taking the opportunity to create modern immigration law so that foreign skilled workers can come to Germany more easily. This is urgently needed. The Corona crisis has caused staff shortages in many areas of the industry from skilled trades to nursing. We want skilled workers to be able to come to Germany quickly and get off to a flying start,” the Federal Minister of the Interior and Homeland, Nancy Faeser, pointed out in this regard. The Minister went on to say that the Ministry is planning to abolish all bureaucratic hurdles, adding that if people have personal potential and professional experience they will have the doors open in Germany. CULTURE

What does a 160-year old wine taste like? A historic event at Marqués de Riscal has the answer:
– The Spanish winery, famous for its Frank Gehry architecture and recently ranked as the world’s second-best vineyard, opened bottles from 30 vintages dating all the way back to the 19th century.
– That wine from 1862 represents the oldest bottled Riojas in existence. With less than 10% of alcohol content (today the region’s reds range between 13% and 14.5%) and a more than decent color for its age, the liquid that poured out of the bottles at the tasting expressed earthy and tobacco notes, while excellent acidity served as the backbone to provide energy and persistence on the palate. It could have easily passed for a 40 or 50-year old red, except that it was 160 years old instead. Because of their deteriorated corks, the oldest bottles are opened with hot tongs that cut off the top of the neck. Photo: Joseph Fox. NERJA

Maro wildfire stabilised: The Andalusian Fire Prevention and Extinction Plan (INFOCA) reported a wildfire at midday this Wednesday, near the village of Maro, Nerja. The fire affects the area known as Vega de Tetuán in Maro, next to La Doncella cove, one of the small beaches between the Maro Cliffs and Cerro Gordo.
A group of forest firefighters and an operations technician are working in the area, as well as a fire engine and a Super Puma helicopter, and Infoca reported the fire as “stabilised” at around 1.30pm. They continue to work to bring it under control. Photo: E. Cabezas. Full article:

HEALTH

Alert about harmful substances in mascara- these are the affected brands: {Translation}
– Three brands of this eye product could contain banned substances such as nickel or formaldehyde, according to a study by the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU). It appears that these elements could cause sensitisation problems when in contact with the skin, in particular, the former could trigger allergies and the latter could be carcinogenic.
– The OCU has concluded these assumptions, after analysing a total of fourteen black volumising mascaras on the market. Unfortunately, however, the presence of these harmful substances is permitted in trace amounts, the organisation says.
– Nickel, which can cause sensitisation problems and allergies, is present in excessive amounts according to the OCU in two products: Maxfactor Divine Lashes, at 8 ppm (parts per million); and Deliplus Maxi Volume, from Mercadona, at 6 ppm.
– Formaldehyde has been detected in Chanel Le Volume mascara at a high level of 12 ppm. This can be formed when certain ingredients (such as preservatives) are combined, and in principle can induce skin sensitisation problems and is probably carcinogenic, warns the OCU. Its recommendation is straightforward: do not use these three products on a daily basis and in case of allergy or sensitivity, they should be avoided.
– The EU Cosmetics Regulation includes these elements as prohibited, but nevertheless allows them as traces if they have not been added deliberately, if there are no technical means to eliminate them or if the manufacturers themselves have no indications that their product causes harm. The Consumers’ Organisation maintains that this is a somewhat lax regulation that serves the interests of cosmetic companies above the safety of citizens, and has therefore requested the intervention of the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) to legislate at least some maximum quantities.
– OCU also warns that the claim ‘ophthalmologically tested’ that appears on several of the mascara products analysed does not guarantee greater safety for the eye than in the rest of these products. Current legislation already establishes that products must be safe for their intended use, for which they pass a series of specific tests.
