– Cerdán had been at Ferraz since 1:00 PM, after spending the morning in Congress, where he was seen at his seat reading incriminating documents that left much of the party shaken. Until this very morning, after part of the investigation’s content leaked yesterday, the now-former socialist leader had been publicly—and, according to sources, privately—denying any involvement in criminal activities. The party leadership even issued a statement last night rallying behind him. This has caused absolute bewilderment among his benchmates, executive colleagues, and even government members.
Ministers and party officials are in shock: “I feel violated”
– “I’m devastated,” says a member of the executive. “I feel violated.” The sentiment is widespread. Government sources, after speaking with Pedro Sánchez, confirm that the Prime Minister himself is in “shock.” Just three weeks ago, he defended Cerdán from the lower chamber’s tribune during a control session, accusing Alberto Núñez Feijóo of indulging in “gutter politics” and “defaming honest people.” “We can’t believe it,” says a minister, referring to himself and the Prime Minister.
– Uncertainty is total, and the question now is whether Cerdán’s departure will be enough to calm the waters. GRANADA

Three Moroccans leave a musician without teeth after asking them not to get high in front of children: {Translation, summary}

Beware of exploitive Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) copycats: {Translation, summary}
– In Spain, the “24-Hour Alcoholics Anonymous Groups,” part of the “International 24-Hour AA Movement,” exploit the reputation of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) by mimicking its branding, including logos, fonts, and colours, to deceive vulnerable alcoholics.
– Journalist Luis Labarga, seeking help in 2021, mistakenly joined one such group in Madrid after a Google search for “Alcoholics Anonymous Madrid” listed them first. He encountered a cult-like atmosphere with malnourished members, oppressive tactics, and coercive practices, including humiliating “history-sharing” sessions and attempts to block his exit. These groups, unrelated to official AA, exploit alcoholics for profit, offering housing and food—services AA explicitly avoids.

Behold! Humanity has captured our first look at the Sun’s South Pole:
– The European Space Agency’s Solar Orbiter has captured humanity’s first-ever images of the sun’s poles. If this doesn’t seem like a big deal, consider that every image you have ever seen of the sun was taken from around our star’s equator. That is because Earth, the other solar system planets, and all other modern spacecraft orbit the sun in a flat disc around it called the “ecliptic plane.”
– This European Space Agency (ESA) sun-orbiting mission has done things a little differently, however, tilting its orbit out of that plane. This allowed the Solar Orbiter to image the sun from a whole new angle and in an entirely new way.
– Solar Orbiter was also able to examine the substance of the Sun’s outer shell by analysing the composition of its upper atmosphere using the Spectral Imaging of the Coronal Environment (SPICE) spectrograph. Data from that instrument should give us a better understanding of how and why the Sun spews material into space by clocking the speed of ejected star-stuff based on variations in observed colour, the so-called “Doppler measurement”. Archez Semana Cultural 2025: 16-21 June
– Wednesday 18 will be the ‘Children’s Day’ starting at 9:30 with a Musical Workshop with Ba – Ba Music in the CPR Almijara of Árchez. At 19.00 hours you can enjoy the puppet theater ‘Los Títeres de Miguel Pino: Peneque, cien por cien valiente’ (Miguel Pino’s Puppets: Peneque, one hundred percent brave). There will also be face painting, free attractions and surprises on Avenida de Andalusia. “It is open to children from other towns to have fun together, and we have prepared these activities because we are aware of what they liked in previous editions”, explained the councilor.
– On Thursday 19 will be held the eighth edition of the ‘Day of the Resident’ with performances by Lemon Pie in the Avenida de Andalucía at eight o’clock in the evening. There will be tastings of drinks for attendees and a flea market will be installed with food from different parts of the world.
– Friday June 20 will be dedicated to the elderly so that at seven o’clock in the afternoon they will have a snack enlivened by the Choir of Árchez. An hour later they can enjoy the II Meeting of Choirs Rocieros with the participation of Corumbela, Comares and Archez. The evening will end with the performance of the room ‘La Gramola’.”
– On Saturday 21, Árchez celebrates the ‘Corpus Christi Day’ with a mass in which the Árchez Choir will participate. At night, from 23.30 pm, will begin a popular festival with the performance of ‘La Banda del Capitán Inhumano’ and ‘Los Electroduendes”.

“Despite this, Spanish authorities did not heed the Commission’s recommendations to take the necessary time to conduct meaningful dialogue with a spirit of loyal cooperation between state institutions, as well as between the majority and the opposition, to achieve social and political reconciliation.”
– Nor did the Spanish authorities “heed the recommendation that it be approved by a qualified majority,” the document sent to the CJEU highlights.
– Regarding the EU’s financial interests, the document notes that “there is no sufficient link between illegal activities aimed at the secession of part of a Member State’s territory and the Union’s financial interests, in terms of the Union’s own resources.” Therefore, the Commission understands that “it is for the national judicial body to determine whether the specifics of the main case could justify the existence of a sufficient connecting link, particularly if Union funds were diverted to finance the illegal referendum.” However, it is critical of the lifting of precautionary measures because “an obligation imposed by national legislation on national courts to lift all precautionary measures before deciding whether the application of the amnesty is justified in a specific case (…) is incompatible with the principles of primacy of Union law.”
– Equally “incompatible” is the “mandatory two-month deadline to decide on the application of the amnesty,” if this timeframe does not allow competent judicial bodies to adopt procedural measures they consider necessary, such as obtaining additional evidence or hearing persons, to assess the substance of the pending matter. Torrox celebrates Romería de San Antonio (pilgrimage of San Antonio) from June 13 to 15: {Translation}

Former pupil kills 10 people and himself in shooting at Austrian school:
– A former pupil killed 10 people and himself at a secondary school in Austria’s second city, Graz, on Tuesday in the worst school shooting in Austria’s modern history. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said six of those killed at the school were female and three were male, without giving any details of their ages. Graz Hospital later confirmed the death of a 10th person.

Nurses’ strike called at Malaga Regional Hospital due to the loss of almost 350 professionals since 2021: {Translation, summary}

– Will all our regular customers and visitors please note that the car boot scheduled for the 11th June has been cancelled, but our usual car boot scheduled for the first Sunday of the month will resume on Sunday, 6th July. Russia launches biggest drone attack on Ukraine since start of war — with almost 500 individual strikes:
– Russia launched almost 500 drones at Ukraine overnight Sunday in its biggest bombardment since the start of the war — a day after US officials warned that such an attack from Moscow was likely.
– A total of 479 Shahed drones and 20 missiles were launched at Ukraine by Russian forces overnight, the Ukrainian air force said in a statement on Monday. All but 19 of the drones and one of the missiles were successfully downed by Ukrainian units, the air force’s statement continued. – Russia claimed on Sunday that its forces had reached the border of Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region for the first time and were pushing into the central-eastern industrial and mining hub in what would be a symbolic and strategic setback for Kyiv. There was no immediate response from Ukraine to Russia’s statement.
– Dnipropetrovsk is not among the five Ukrainian regions over which Russia has asserted a formal territorial claim.
It is an important mining and industrial hub for Ukraine and deeper Russian advances into the region could have a serious knock-on effect for Kyiv’s struggling military and economy.
– In more than a decade of conflict with Kremlin-backed separatists and the Russian army, Ukraine has never had to fight on the territory of the Dnipropetrovsk region until now.

Building regulations to mandate solar panels on new homes:
– Changes to Building Regulations will require solar panels are installed on almost all new homes in England from next year. The forthcoming Future Homes Standard, to be published in full this autumn, will introduce a “functional requirement” for renewable electricity generation in new dwellings. In most cases, this will mean the installation of rooftop solar photovoltaic panels.
– Announcing the change on 6 June, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said the regulation would allow flexibility for developments where solar is impractical due to shading or other constraints. But the vast majority of homes built from 2025 would be expected to generate renewable power onsite. The change replaces proposals made in 2023 that would have allowed developers to omit solar panels altogether if 40 per cent of roof area coverage was not feasible.
– Under the revised approach, a minimum level of solar installation will be required in all but exceptional cases.
– Energy secretary Ed Miliband said the requirement would “unleash a rooftop revolution”, describing the mandate as “common sense”. Housing and planning minister Matthew Pennycook said the Future Homes Standard would ensure “modern and efficient” housing stock powered by low-carbon energy.
– Alongside solar generation, new homes will also need to incorporate low-carbon heating such as heat pumps and meet high standards of energy efficiency. Detailed technical guidance is being developed with industry stakeholders ahead of the final publication.
– Developers estimated solar installations could add £3,000 (€3,560) to £4,000 (€4,750) to construction costs per building. Miliband dismissed concerns that these would be passed onto buyers, claiming house prices would not rise.
– The policy dovetailed with Labour’s broader green agenda, including relaxed planning rules for heat pumps and a £13.2 billion (€15.68 billion) insulation scheme. The Climate Change Committee insisted near-total decarbonisation of housing was essential for the 2050 net-zero target, a goal Labour inherited from the Conservatives who appeared to have turned against it.
– Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said it was “impossible” without tanking living standards, while Reform UK wanted it scrapped entirely, citing higher energy bills.

Drought restrictions eased in Vélez-Málaga after suffering several summers with water cuts:
– Vélez-Málaga town hall on the eastern Costa del Sol has announced its first summer without water cuts for three years and has published information on permitted uses. However, it will regulate the use of potable water for swimming pools, gardens, car washing and cleaning properties with a maximum daily limit of 225 litres per inhabitant per day.

Up to 72 people requested euthanasia in Andalusia during 2024: {Translation, summary}

– Regarding the procedures carried out, one was performed in Almería, one in Cádiz, four in Granada, two in Huelva, 15 in Málaga, and five in Seville.
– The three main groups of chronic illnesses or conditions leading to requests for medical assistance in dying are, firstly, neurodegenerative diseases with 21 cases, followed by oncological conditions with 16 cases, and complex chronic/multipathological conditions with 10 cases. Thus, 94% of applications originate in Primary Care settings due to their proximity to the patient, family, and home environment. No revocations have been recorded after the patient signed the informed consent.

Plug pulled on Malaga-based cruise company Alma Cruceros just six weeks after it launched its maiden voyage:
– Alma Cruceros – the luxury shipping company founded by Malaga-based Elisardo Sánchez – has announced the “definitive cessation of its activity” following the “unilateral and unjustified termination of the charter contract by the ship’s owner”, which, according to the company, has made it impossible “to continue with the solutions that were being explored to keep the project operational”.
– According to an article by Cinco Días, the ship Alma Cruceros was using was seized due to non-payments to the consignee Lantimar Group, which is in charge of paying port services and fees. On 20 May, the ship’s activity ceased at the port of Malaga and the vessel has now been transferred to Gibraltar to be auctioned.

UPDATE- Police are looking for a blonde man as the murderer of two Scots outside a bar in Fuengirola: {Translation, summary}
– Police are hunting a blond man suspected of fatally shooting two Scottish men, Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jr, in an Irish bar on Fuengirola’s promenade last Saturday night. {No info given regarding the connection between Ross Monaghan and the bar where this happened, which is named Monaghan’s. -Ed.} The suspect arrived on foot with his face covered, shot the victims at close range, and fled by car towards Benalmádena. The Scientific Police and the Organised Crime Unit are investigating, collecting witness statements and security footage from the scene and surrounding areas.
– Autopsies revealed one victim died instantly from a chest shot, while the other was chased and hit by multiple bullets. The victims are linked to Scottish organised crime involved in a long-standing drug trafficking feud. Authorities are confident the single shooter will be identified and apprehended, though the involvement of others is still under investigation. Dutch government collapses after far-right leader Wilders quits coalition, PM Schoof resigns hours later:
– The Dutch government collapsed on Tuesday, most likely ushering in a snap election, after anti-Muslim politician Geert Wilders quit the right-wing coalition, accusing other parties of failing to back his tougher immigration policies.
– Wilders said he had had no option but to quit the coalition.
“I proposed a plan to close the borders for asylum seekers, to send them away, to shut asylum shelters. I demanded coalition partners sign up to that, which they didn’t. That left me no choice but to withdraw my support for this government,” he told reporters. “I signed up for the strictest asylum policies, not for the demise of the Netherlands.” He said he would lead the PVV into a new election and hoped to be the next prime minister. Ukraine Claims of 41 Destroyed Russian Bombers Overstated According to Satellite Evidence and Independent Researchers:
– Satellite imagery of a Russian air base taken shortly after Ukraine carried out a drone attack deep inside Russia over the weekend shows several strategic bombers were destroyed and badly damaged, according to three open source analysts. “Based on the debris visible, comparison to recent satellite images and released drone footage from Telegram posted to Twitter, I can see the destruction of several aircraft,” said John Ford, a research associate at the California-based James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies.
– Ukraine targeted at least four air bases across Russia using 117 unmanned aerial vehicles launched from containers close to the targets. Drone footage of the operation verified by Reuters shows several aircraft were struck in at least two locations. Medvedev says Russia seeks victory, not compromise, in talks with Ukraine- “Everything that needs to be blown up will be blown up, and those who must be eliminated will be.”:
– Senior Russian security official Dmitry Medvedev said on Tuesday that the point of holding peace talks with Ukraine was to ensure a swift and complete Russian victory. “The Istanbul talks are not for striking a compromise peace on someone else’s delusional terms but for ensuring our swift victory and the complete destruction of the neo-Nazi regime,” the hawkish deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council said on Telegram.
– “That’s what the Russian Memorandum published yesterday is about.” Medvedev was referring to a set of Russian demands presented to Ukraine at talks in Istanbul on Monday. They included handing over more territory, becoming a neutral country, accepting limits on the size of the Ukrainian army and holding new parliamentary and presidential elections.
– At the talks, which lasted only an hour, the two sides agreed on a new prisoner-of-war swap and an exchange of 12,000 dead soldiers, but not on the ceasefire that Ukraine and its allies are pressing Russia to accept.
– Medvedev added, in an apparent response to Ukraine’s weekend strikes on Russian strategic bomber bases, that Moscow would take revenge. “Retribution is inevitable,” he said. “Our Army is pushing forward and will continue to advance. Telefónica alert! New hack of Movistar that affects customer data- 22 million customer records exposed worldwide: {Translation, summary}
– Telefónica is investigating a ‘hacking’ in Movistar through which a cybercriminal called ‘Dedale’ would have illegally access to 22 million customer records and that has already leaked, as a test, a database with 1 million records.
– The ‘hack’ has been revealed by the Hackmanac cybersecurity firm through social network X, where it indicates that the data set “includes confidential details such as complete names, national identification numbers (DNI), mobile phone numbers, service plans and updates.”
– A database with the million records from Peru has been leaked so far to prove it is real, in an attempt to collect a ransom. It is not ruled out that in the rest of the data there are records of customers from other countries where the company operates, such as Spain. Big Tech vs The Greenies, Meta becomes the latest big tech company turning to nuclear power for AI needs:
– “Securing clean, reliable energy is necessary to continue advancing our AI ambitions,” said Urvi Parekh, Meta’s head of global energy. Meta has cut a 20-year deal to secure nuclear power to help meet surging demand for artificial intelligence and other computing needs at Facebook’s parent company. Investments from Meta will also expand the output of a Constellation Energy Illinois nuclear plant. The agreement announced Tuesday is just the latest in a string of tech-nuclear partnerships as the use of AI expands. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
– Surging investments in small nuclear reactors comes at a time when large tech companies are facing two major demands: a need to increase their energy supply for AI and data centers, among other needs, while also trying to meet their long-term goals to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions. Those emissions are generated, in large part, from the burning of fossil fuels like gasoline, oil and coal. Nuclear energy, while producing waste, does not emit carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases.
– Constellation, the owner of the shuttered Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, said in September that it planned to restart that reactor so tech giant Microsoft could power its data centers.

Renfe will allow full bikes to be carried on Avant trains, eliminates the obligation to carry a cover for folding bikes, and removes the €3 supplement for Middle Distance trains: {Translation, summary}
– Renfe is introducing new, more flexible rules for transporting bicycles on its trains, effective 15 July. These changes include better signage for bicycle spaces, easier access to trains, and, for the first time, allowing complete bicycles on Avant (only) high-speed trains now, and more trains in the near future. A new “train+bike” ticket will be available, and the €3 supplement for bicycles on medium-distance trains (over 100 km) will be scrapped.

Is This Stunning Censorship A Glimpse Into Our Own Future?:
– The BBC has reported on smartphones smuggled out of North Korea that are setup to spy on citizens and prevent them from using language that is not authorised by the Communist state.
– Instead of simply not allowing North Korean people to have such devices, the regime there has decided to manufacture and distribute phones as a tool for further controlling the population amid fears that freedom, in the form of South Korean culture, is encroaching.
– The BBC reporter demonstrates how the phone edits words and phrases that are are not acceptable to the North Korean government, and replaces them with language they have sanctioned. In one example, the reporter types in a South Korean slang word for “boyfriend” and the phone changes it to “comrade.” A second example shows the reporter typing in ‘South Korea’ and the phone automatically changing it to “Puppet State.”
– The phone also covertly takes a screenshot every five minutes, stores the images in a secret folder which the user cannot access, but that the North Korean authorities can scour through should they wish to do so.
– “Smartphones are now part and parcel of the way North Korea tries to indoctrinate people,” Martyn Williams, a senior fellow at the Washington DC-based Stimson Center, and an expert in North Korean technology and information, told the BBC. Expect acrobatics, dance and fun along with lots of special effects and lighting. The show runs Thursday to Saturday at 8.30pm and on Sunday at 4pm.

Threads and weaves (Hebras y urdimbres) is the title of a excellent exhibition at the University of Malaga Headquarters on the Paseo del Parque. It includes a carefully curated selection of modern textile pieces – wool, lace, embroidery and threads – created by Spanish and Latin American artists. The panels are (unfortunately) only in Spanish, but the exhibition staff speak reasonable English and can give you a fair idea of what they represent.

News Note: After the successful Ukrainian drone attacks on multiple Russian airfields this weekend I was expecting a response from Russia by now, or a statement from Putin. But it has remained quiet, even in the Russian media. That in itself is suspicious, mainstream media now seem to have buried the story when it had been front page news for 24 hours. The Russian army made a short press release acknowledging the attacks, but claims damages were minimal, with no injuries or deaths. There are many videos circulating on social media claiming to show the drones launching from parked trucks, others purport to show dozens of Russian bomber planes being totally destroyed, however some of these videos have been proven to be fakes so healthy scepticism is in order. Why having an empty home in Spain could soon cost you more:
– If you own a Spanish property that you’re not using, the government wants to raise your taxes in order to encourage you to put it on the rental market, one of several fiscal changes Prime Minister Sánchez wants to implement to fix the housing crisis. In order to help solve the housing crisis, Spain’s Socialist-led government recently presented a draft bill in Congress with several eye-catching tax proposals.
– One of these fiscal measures was aimed at encouraging the release of empty properties into the rental market by progressively increasing the amount of taxes owners are charged. There is no updated official registry of vacant properties in Spain, but according to the National Statistics Institute (INE) census in 2021, there are 3.8 million of them, which is 14 percent of the total.
– According to the INE, a home is considered empty when “It is not the habitual residence of any person nor is it used seasonally, periodically, or sporadically by anyone.” Therefore, it is considered “uninhabited”. The current legislation defines empty properties as those that have been vacant for longer than two years.
– The government has confirmed that it does not include second homes that are used for holidays once or twice a year, for example.
– Spain’s main stats body estimates the number of empty homes by looking at which ones do not meet minimum electricity consumption.
– The idea of the new measure is to make those with empty homes pay more. To do this the government will modify personal income tax or IRPF. Currently, homeowners are charged 1.1 percent of the cadastral value or 2 percent if this value hasn’t been updated in more than a decade.
– If the new bill passes, those with vacant homes with a total cadastral value of up to €100,000 will continue to add 1.1 percent to their tax return, but beyond that, the percentage will increase to 1.5 percent up to half a million euros; to 2 percent for homes worth up to €1 million; and up to 3 percent for those with empty homes valued above €1 million.
– Here’s an example of how this would work in reality. The average price of a property in Spain is around €165,000. So, under the current rules, a homeowner who keeps it empty will have to add €1,815 to the amount used to calculate their personal income tax. With the government’s new proposal, this would rise to €2,475. If it’s a very wealthy person with three homes with the same cadastral value – €495,000 in total – the tax would go from €5,445 to almost double that amount – €9,900.
– Not everyone thinks the Spanish government’s fiscal punishment will work though. Jaime Palomera, co-founder of the Urban Research Institute and the Sindicat de Llogateres (Landlords ‘ Union) explained to newspaper El Diario that “the monetary impact in terms of costs is too small to incentivise owners”. He also explains that the cadastral value is usually much lower than the tax and appraisal values. This means that a property costing €600,000 home can easily have a cadastral value of €200,000. This could be an issue because owners will be paying much less tax for what the property is actually worth.
– Víctor Palomo, a lawyer from the Spanish Housing Authority (CAES) also believes this measure is not enough. “For it to be effective, the surcharge has to be striking”. Spain’s maligned Housing Law, introduced two years ago, already included the possibility for city councils to add up to 150 percent of the property tax for empty homes.
– It’s important to remember that far this is a draft law, which means it will still have to pass through Congress and receive a majority vote, not so straightforward for the ruling Socialists given their weakened parliamentary position.

The ‘summer’ begins to take its toll on Andalusia’s reservoirs: {Translation}
– Although there are still three weeks until its official start, high temperatures and the increased demand for water to cope with them, combined with the initial surge of the peak tourism season, are having a direct impact. Andalusian reservoirs are beginning to lose resources, and this week they collectively hold just over 7,200 cubic hectometres, of which 4,800 correspond to the Guadalquivir basin and 2,400 to the intra-regional basins managed by the Junta.
– The Guadalquivir reservoirs have been losing water since 10 May. In the last day, more than 10 cubic hectometres were released, while inflows barely reached two. The 49 reservoirs that make up this basin are currently at less than 60% of their capacity.
– Among the other basins, the Tinto-Odiel-Piedras in Huelva shows the best partial figures, being at 72% of its storage capacity, which exceeds 827 cubic hectometres. Slightly above this is the Guadalete-Barbate basin in Cádiz province, which is just under 900 cubic hectometres, leaving its current capacity at 54%. The Mediterranean Basins store 675 cubic hectometres, representing 58% of their total capacity. These are the only basins that have not only avoided losing resources but have gained one cubic hectometre due to recent rainfall. Extinguished forest fire declared in Frigiliana: {Translation}
– A new forest fire has broken out in the province. Since 2:10 pm this Monday, a fire has been active near the La Exótica residential area, belonging to Frigiliana, north of the town centre of Nerja, close to the Mediterranean motorway A-7. The fire was brought under control at 4:59 pm, according to reports from the Infoca Plan on social media.
– Later, at 5:56 pm, the fire was declared extinguished. The Infoca Plan deployed both aerial and ground resources to the area. – Smartphone users of Gmail are about to see a new layer of GenAI woven directly into their inboxes. Google has begun rolling out automatic AI-generated summaries for emails, a move that shifts the company’s Gemini assistant from an optional tool to a more visible, default feature for many account holders.

Two Scots dead after shooting by hooded gunmen at Irish bar on Costa del Sol:

The Spanish space agency warns space and land operators after registering a powerful solar ejection: {Translation}

The new species was identified by Dr. Junxia Yuan, from the Shenzhou Space Biotechnology Group in Beijing, following detailed genetic and biochemical tests.
– Early research suggests that this tiny organism is well suited to the environment hundreds of miles above Earth’s surface and might offer fresh perspectives on how microbes adapt to low gravity and high radiation.
– How the space bacteria was discovered. Space stations host people, plants, and countless microbes. Many come from crew members or cargo, so it can be tough to figure out if a microbe has simply stowed away or developed new traits during the mission. This odd finding has prompted more investigation into whether the microbe was originally part of Earth’s enormous microbial pool. Experts say that the next step is to confirm if it acquired extra survival skills once exposed to orbital conditions.
