SPAIN
The extraordinary regularization of migrants faces its end with no news of an extension and with more than a million applications:
– The deadline to apply for the extraordinary regularization of migrants ends this June 30 and, with a few hours to go before its closure, the Government has not announced any extension. Everything points, therefore, to the deadline remaining as approved in the royal decree regulating this measure, already considered the largest extraordinary regularization in recent history of Spain.
– The decision comes in a context of figures much higher than initially foreseen. According to data released this Monday, the telematic platform Mercurio has already received around 1.2-1.3 million applications, more than double the approximately 500,000 that the Executive estimated when it launched the process last April.
– The entities assisting applicants maintain that thousands of people could be left out for reasons beyond their control.
Among the main difficulties, they point to the overcrowding of Immigration offices, the scarcity of in-person appointments, delays in obtaining criminal record certificates issued by some countries of origin, and technical problems recorded at certain times during the telematic processing. Despite these claims, the Government has maintained the planned schedule so far.
– Once the submission period ends, the Administration will continue processing all applications registered within the enabled period. The regulations establish a maximum period of three months to resolve the files, although many have already been admitted for processing and even resolved favorably. During that time, individuals whose applications have been admitted will be able to remain and work legally in Spain until the definitive resolution. Ministry of Housing prepares a new royal decree-law with tax breaks for landlords, contract extensions, and a 21% VAT on tourist apartments:
– The Ministry of Housing announced this Monday that in the coming weeks it will approve a new decree-law to raise the VAT applied to tourist apartments to 21% and undertake the regulation of seasonal and room rentals. It will include both the extension of rental contracts and IRPF bonuses for those owners who decide to lower the rent. Also included, administrative measures to streamline urban planning procedures and the obligation for rental contracts to be reflected in writing. ANDALUCÍA
Summer hours come into effect at Andalusian health centres: {Trans, summary}
– Primary healthcare services across Andalusia are operating reduced summer opening hours from 29 June to 4 September. Most health centres will be open only from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Around 75% of centres will close in the afternoons, so patients needing afternoon care must “attend the alternative health centre designated for their area instead”. This mainly affects family medicine, nursing, patient services, and paediatrics.
– Centres with emergency care units will remain open until 8:00 pm and will also treat patients transferred from centres that close in the afternoon. Hospital services are expected to remain largely unchanged, with more than 85% of beds and 76% of operating theatres remaining available. The SAS has also announced a 14% increase in summer healthcare staff compared with last year. – The program will feature three activity points along the coastline. The sessions are designed to enjoy physical exercise, relaxation and socializing in a unique environment, consolidating the municipality’s beaches as spaces for health and well-being during the summer months.
– In Torre del Mar, the sessions will take place on Senior Beach, from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. Pilates will be offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, while yoga will be taught on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
– In Caleta de Vélez, Las Palmeras beach will host the activities from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. Pilates will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays, and yoga on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
– In Benajarafe, Palmeral beach, next to Chiringuito Pedro, will have sessions from Monday to Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., adapting the activity to the most favorable conditions for sports practice. COSTA DEL SOL
A network that manufactured fake British driving licenses has been dismantled on the Costa del Sol: {Trans, summary}
– The Spanish National Police have dismantled an international criminal organization based in the Malaga towns of Mijas and Marbella. This gang specialized in the large-scale manufacture and distribution of counterfeit UK driving licences. The operation resulted in the arrest of two people, a British national and a Ukrainian national, considered the alleged ringleaders.
– Thanks to this joint effort, agents dismantled a clandestine laboratory equipped with high-precision industrial machinery, which allowed the criminals to produce up to one hundred fraudulent IDs every day. The criminals demanded around €300 for each document and sent the merchandise mainly to the British market, although shipments to Italy, Germany, France, and Saudi Arabia have also been detected. The main appeal of these ID cards lies in the fact that, in the United Kingdom, they are commonly used as official identification for numerous administrative and financial procedures.
– In total, police have seized 592 counterfeit driver’s licenses, as well as more than €56,000 in cash and nearly $41,000 in cryptocurrency. Among the seized materials were laser printers, heat-sealing die-cutting machines, precision scanners, and advanced security features such as special inks and kinegrams. TORROX
Óscar Medina demands the Government reinforce security this summer in Torrox to “protect the peace of mind of the residents”: {Trans, summary}
– Mayor Óscar Medina said he has formally asked the Government of Spain to introduce an exceptional security plan and increase public security personnel in Torrox, particularly in El Morche and the coastal area, ahead of the busy summer season. He said the request reflects concerns raised by residents and traders about maintaining public order.
– Medina praised the Guardia Civil’s professionalism but argued that the State should provide more officers, better resources, and stronger legal powers. He stressed that responsibility for public security and migration lies with the central Government rather than local councils, adding that citizens simply expect State services to work effectively. He maintained that the request is not politically motivated but is intended to preserve Torrox’s strong community harmony. While describing the municipality as safe, he said officers need sufficient resources to deal promptly with minor offences. He also pledged continued cooperation from the Local Police.
– {This article presents the Mayor’s claims and arguments without providing any independent verification or providing references. His assertions about responsibilities, legalities, resource needs, and motivations should be regarded as political statements rather than established facts. -Ed.}

NERJA
Three people, all lawyers, arrested in Nerja for the alleged misappropriation of a large inheritance from a deceased foreign national: {Trans, summary}
– Spain’s Civil Guard has arrested three people and is investigating eleven others over an alleged criminal scheme involving fraud, forged documents, identity theft, property offences, misappropriation, money laundering, and organised crime. The investigation began after a Spanish bank reported suspicious cash withdrawals from the account of an elderly British customer. Investigators allegedly found that the account had been opened using forged documents and remained active after the account holder had died.
– Two lawyers from Nerja allegedly withdrew funds and were linked to firms specialising in property and inheritance matters involving foreign residents. Investigators also identified a third lawyer, a close relative of one of the arrested suspects, as a direct participant in the alleged scheme.
– The group allegedly used a forged handwritten will and false witnesses to divert a substantial inheritance from a deceased foreign woman living in a local care home. Her lawful heir, a son living in Switzerland, reportedly never received the inheritance despite granting a power of attorney to facilitate the transfer. Police seized €200,000, jewellery, electronic devices, and documents. Two suspects remain in custody while the investigation continues. UKRAINE WAR
Zelenskyy condemns ‘horrific attacks’ as Russian strikes continue:
– Russian missiles and drones killed at least 11 civilians and injured 40 others in Ukraine on Monday in what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as “horrific attacks.”
– A Russian missile targeting infrastructure struck the central city of Dnipro, killing five people and wounding 29, Zelenskyy said on social media. Russian drones also hit a passenger minibus in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, killing three and wounding six, including a child, he said. In addition, Russia drones killed a 69-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, National Police said.
Other deadly attacks occurred in at least six other regions of Ukraine, authorities said.
– Some customers in eight Ukrainian regions were left without power Monday after Russian strikes, after hot weather drove up electricity use as people turned on air conditioners, grid operator Ukrenergo said. Full article: https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war…

Scientists discover four new species of blood-sucking flies in Andalusia during Nile virus surveillance: {Trans, summary}
– A scientific team led by the Doñana Biological Station (EBD-CSIC), in collaboration with the University of Milan, has identified four new species of ceratopogonids of the genus Leptoconops, tiny blood-sucking flies, that is, those that feed on blood, barely two millimeters in length that until now were unknown to science. The discovery took place during mosquito sampling carried out by the Doñana Biological Station to detect the presence of West Nile virus in different parts of Andalusia.
– The genus Leptoconops comprises species of tiny hematophagous flies. As with mosquitoes, their females feed on blood by making small cuts in the skin of birds and mammals, including humans, a behavior known as telmophagy. Although they are absent most of the year, during the spring months they can increase their abundance greatly, causing discomfort from their bites.
– Pre-doctoral researcher Dumitru Ionut Paun Tanase, co-author of the study, concluded that “the capture of these insects will allow us to investigate their role in the transmission of parasites, as well as their ecology, helping to fill the knowledge gaps that exist about them”. Archaeologists find huge Viking textile production site in Denmark:
– Archaeologists have discovered a huge Viking Age textile production site in Denmark that dates back more than 1,000 years and underlines the sophistication of Viking society.
– Experts from the Moesgaard Museum said this week that the sprawling 100,000-square-meter (more than 1 million-square-foot) site features an area for processing flax as well as more than 80 pit houses — semi-buried huts that were used as workshops and dwellings in Viking times. Experts found separate areas for production and crafts, plus a single residential home, which suggests work was overseen by a powerful individual with control over resources and production.
– It’s located in Søften, 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of Denmark’s second-largest city, Aarhus, on the Jutland peninsula. The site dates back to the late Iron Age and early Viking Age, sometime between A.D. 600 and 950.
