News Note: A slow news day in Andalucia. The local press is full of rehashes of old stories and officials patting themselves on the back, or calling each other liars. I see no need to subject the readers to that, it’s bad enough that I had to slog my way thru all that rubbish. Tomorrow’s ‘Weekend Edition’ will be larger than usual since there will be no issue next Monday. -Ed.

The judge in the “Begoña Gómez case” charges a senior Moncloa official and rules out closing the case: {Translation}
– The judge investigating Begoña Gómez, the wife of the Prime Minister, has agreed to summon the Secretary General of the Prime Minister’s Office, Judit Alexandra González, as a suspect, while rejecting the request by the defence and the Public Prosecutor’s Office to dismiss the case.
– This is stated in a court order, to which Europa Press has had access, in which he agrees to summon the senior official to “inform her of the purpose of the proceedings and to notify her of the charges against her, an appearance at which the prosecution and defence must appear in order to specify the charges against her; and to be heard in a statement as a suspect in the crime of embezzlement of public funds” on 12 November.
– It also requests from Moncloa the diaries of Begoña Gómez and her advisor, Cristina Álvarez, for analysis by the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard. The old convent of Las Claras will be reborn as a great hospitality project in the centre: {Translation, summary}

The plan aims to preserve the building’s heritage while transforming it into a cultural and tourist landmark, revitalising the historic centre, attracting visitors and creating jobs. The project seeks to retain the architectural essence of the convent while introducing a modern, functional space focused on hospitality and catering. The mayor highlighted the convent’s importance to the city’s identity and the broader municipal strategy to recover heritage sites and encourage private investment, expressing confidence that the project will mark a turning point for Vélez-Málaga. GRANADA
Dangerous Asian hornet detected on Spain’s Costa Tropical for first time:
– The Asian hornet has been officially detected for the first time in Granada province, on an avocado farm in Motril, during a regional pest surveillance inspection. Until now, Granada was the only Andalusian province without a confirmed sighting, but the insect has already spread rapidly across Andalucía since first appearing in Spain in 2018.
-Although no crop damage has yet been reported, experts fear it could soon affect coastal farms and local agriculture. The hornet builds nests close to the ground or in urban areas, increasing the risk of human contact and stings, which can be dangerous for allergy sufferers. It also poses a serious threat to bees, as it preys on them to feed its larvae, damaging honey production and crop pollination. In addition, it can spoil fruit such as mangoes and grapes. Authorities urge residents to report any sightings or nests immediately to local officials. A 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone have been declared around the site, and all birds on the premises will be humanely culled as part of disease control measures.
– This follows a series of confirmed cases in recent days. Earlier in the week, further detections were made in North Yorkshire, Suffolk, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, and East Sussex.

Socialist Muslim Mamdani Makes History With Decisive Win in NYC Mayoral Race, Dems won almost every other race as well:
– Zohran Mamdani was elected the 111th mayor of New York in a historic victory that will put an avowed democratic socialist in charge of the city that serves as the capital of global finance.
– Mamdani, a Democrat, received 50.4% of the votes, while former Governor Andrew Cuomo, running on an independent line after his loss to Mamdani in the primary, garnered 41.6% with 98% of the vote counted. Republican Curtis Sliwa got 7.1%.
– When Mamdani is sworn in on Jan. 1, the 34-year-old state lawmaker from Queens will be the youngest person to hold the office in a century. He’ll also be New York’s first Muslim mayor and first person of South Asian descent to lead the city in its 400-year history. He’ll replace first-term Mayor Eric Adams, who dropped out of the race amid low poll numbers and a series of scandals.
– Mamdani is the Ugandan-born son of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani, a Columbia University professor and scholar of colonialism. He moved to New York at age 7, attended Bronx High School of Science and Bowdoin College in Maine, and tried his hand at multiple careers, including as a rap artist, working on his mother’s films, and as a foreclosure-prevention counselor at a nonprofit named Chhaya before turning toward politics. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018, and he first won election to the Assembly in 2020, representing a district in western Queens. GASTRONOMIA
Eat Like The King In Malaga– The steak tartare that King Juan Carlos likes: {Translation}
– The restaurant El Jardín de Lutz, in Finca Cortesín, prepares this dish with a recipe that the Royal House provided to its chef several decades ago.
– Half a tablespoon of Dijon mustard and five chopped capers per person. Not one more, not one less. The steak tartare prepared by chef Lutz Bösing and his team at El Jardín de Lutz restaurant in Finca Cortesín, Casares, is exactly the same as King Juan Carlos likes it.
– As the emeritus monarch prefers, the tartare is made with beef tenderloin, a raw egg yolk, extra virgin olive oil and a quarter of a fresh spring onion. The dish, prepared at the table, is seasoned with salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, chopped parsley and lemon juice. The only twist they allow themselves is to top it with a fried egg yolk.
– Lutz has treasured this prized recipe for decades, since his time in the kitchen of the Lodge Hotel in Sierra Nevada, Granada, long before a fire destroyed it and forced its reconstruction. Apparently, King Juan Carlos was skiing at the resort and wanted to enjoy one of his favourite dishes, steak tartare, just as he would at home.
– To make sure they got it right, the hotel management and Lutz himself managed to obtain the recipe directly from the Royal Household, sent by fax, for the dish so enjoyed by the then monarch. It is a document that, even today, he keeps in his office as part of his personal history. “The only change is that we add a fried egg,” the chef explains.
– The dish remains a fixture on the restaurant’s menu and is priced at 44 euros. El Jardín de Lutz is a dinner-only restaurant with a strict dress code, also known for other specialities such as guinea fowl breast with morel sauce, bimi and mashed potatoes (49 euros) or a classic Mediterranean sole ‘Meunière’ with seasonal vegetables (64 euros).
