SPAIN
Sánchez’s partners are asking him to stop the “whataboutism” tactics, while Junts is demanding his resignation so that Congress can elect a new president: {Trans, summary}
– Pedro Sanchez’s own investiture partners delivered a torrent of sharp rebukes in Congress, demanding he step aside amid mounting corruption scandals engulfing the PSOE.
– Previous allies criticised his refusal to show self-criticism after the Supreme Court’s severe conviction of his former deputy Jose Luis Abalos, accusing him of clinging to “and you more” tactics by deflecting to old Popular Party corruption cases. Junts went furthest, with Miriam Nogueras urging: “Stand aside and let this parliament put in someone who does have the capacity to fulfil with Catalonia and with the Catalans.” She suggested his own side would soon demand the same. The PNV’s Maribel Vaquero declared the investiture majority “has weakened until it has become a negative majority” and reproached Sanchez for failing to assume responsibilities. {The coalition of parties that enabled Sánchez’s investiture has collapsed. While those parties may still not be ready to actively bring him down together (e.g. via a motion of no confidence with the PP), they no longer form a reliable bloc in favour of the government. The government is now surviving only because the opposition is fragmented — a classic fragile “negative majority” situation. -Ed.}
– ERC’s Gabriel Rufian questioned if Sanchez “has sin”, asking: “Did you know something? Have you stolen?” and warned the explanations “arrive late and badly”. Podemos leader Ione Belarra bluntly stated Sanchez’s “cycle has finished” and he must “give way” due to irreparable damage. Partners urged concrete action but signalled his weakened position, with many implying he should resign to unblock the situation. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/los-socios-sanchez-le-piden-dejar-tu-mas-mientras-junts-reclama-que-dimita-para-que-congreso-elija-un-nuevo-presidente_7006114_0.html
In related news…
Sánchez denies “widespread corruption”, rules out taking responsibility and attacks the opposition declaring “How can we not continue?”:
– Despite his investiture partners demanding he step aside amid the corruption scandals, Pedro Sanchez defiantly refused to resign or call early elections. Instead of showing self-criticism, he denied widespread corruption in the PSOE, attacked political and media actors for creating a false image, and insisted “the question is not if we must continue, but how we are not going to continue”. He trod lightly over the 24-year prison sentence of his former number two, Jose Luis Abalos, while promising to “clean whatever has to be cleaned” yet offering no concrete measures to purge those responsible or hold anyone to account.
– Sanchez spent considerable time defending his wife and brother against what he called a pattern of “harassment and demolition”, and lashed out at the right rather than addressing his allies’ rebukes. His partners, who enabled his investiture, have now signalled the loss of their confidence, yet Sanchez clings to power, claiming only a progressive government can fight corruption. This stubborn refusal to accept accountability further highlights his weakened position and the urgent calls for him to resign. Still more heat on Pedro…
PP president Feijóo accuses Sánchez of being the “corrupting link” in all the schemes and criticizes his “arrogance”– “What is he still doing in his seat?”: {Trans, summary}
– Even as his investiture partners demand he step aside amid relentless corruption scandals, Pedro Sanchez clings desperately to power. Opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo {pic} branded him the “corrupting link” of every plot surrounding the PSOE and asked pointedly: “What is he still doing in the seat of President of the Government?” Feijoo declared that every day Sanchez delays elections is “an aggression to the Spanish nation” and accused him of showing only “arrogance” and a desire to “stretch out the minutes of the rubbish of this legislature”. He warned Sanchez’s former partners that they are now “accomplices” who will become “collateral damage” if they continue supporting him. Feijoo dismissed Sanchez’s lengthy defence as full of “victimhood” and directly confronted his refusal to resign: “Does continuing to commit offences refer to what you mean?” He concluded bluntly that “the corruption is you” and that Sanchez “has no authority, nor credibility nor decency to remain in that seat”. The growing isolation, including from those who enabled his investiture, foretells dark days ahead for Sanchez. Photo: Feijóo holds list of 19 Sanchez related scandals. Begoña Gómez hands over her passport at the courthouse by order of Judge Peinado: {Trans, summary}
– Begoña Gómez, wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, surrendered her passport at 6pm this Wednesday at the Plaza de Castilla courthouse in Madrid as part of the precautionary measures related to the jury trial she faces. The decision was made by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, who ordered this measure for the processing of the legal proceedings against her.
– Begoña Gómez’s defence team has requested that the higher court overturn not only the retention of her passport, but also the other two precautionary measures imposed by Judge Peinado. These measures include a travel ban preventing her from leaving Spain and the obligation to appear in court every two weeks to sign in. As this has yet to be ruled on, Gomez, and her assistant who is also charged in the case, surrendered their passports. ANDALUCÍA
The investiture debate for Juanma Moreno will take place on June 29th and 30th: {Trans, summary}
– Juanma Moreno lacks the necessary support to secure victory in his investiture as president of the Andalusian government. With only 53 seats from the May elections he falls short of the 55 votes required for an absolute majority in the first ballot scheduled for 29 June. At present neither Vox nor the left-wing groups offer any backing, even by abstention, despite ongoing talks with Vox that have not yet produced results. This absence of alliances leaves Moreno unable to win on the initial vote.
– A second ballot would follow 48 hours later needing only a simple majority, but failure there would trigger two months of repeated votes. {If all opposition parties vote against him in a second vote, the 53 PP votes would face a clear majority of no votes (likely around 56 votes against, assuming full attendance). In that scenario, Moreno would fall short even on a simple majority. See additional ref. -Ed.}
– After a failure of a second vote, a two-month period begins, counted from the date of the first vote. During these two months further investiture votes can be held repeatedly. Any candidate (not just Moreno) can be proposed and voted on in this window. If, after the full two months have passed, no candidate has managed to win the necessary support and gain the confidence of the Parliament, then the law automatically triggers new regional elections in Andalusia. Parliament would be dissolved and new elections would be called 54 days later.
– The current impasse threatens to delay formation of a stable government well into July or beyond. This would obstruct timely work on the 2027 budget, which needs to be ready for implementation on 1 January, and would prolong political uncertainty and deadlock for Andalusia following the recent elections. MALAGA CITY
Malaga Fair 2026 will be held from August 15 to 22: {Trans, summary}
– The start will take place on the night of August 14 to 15, with the fireworks. Almost all events, street parties, and casetas (party tents) are completely free to enter, with food and drink available for purchase
– How the Feria de Málaga actually works…
DAYS
Feria de Día (Day Fair): Starting at around 1PM in the streets and squares of the historic center (Calle Larios, Plaza de la Constitución, etc.) music, dancing, casetas, and street atmosphere. Official closing time: 6PM. At that hour the music stops in public spaces. This is a municipal rule to respect residents and control noise.
NIGHTS
Feria de Noche (Night Fair / Main Fairground): At the Real de Cortijo de Torres (the big fairground outside the center).
This is where the big rides, most casetas, concerts, and nightlife happen. It stays open much later, usually until 2–4AM depending on the day.
PILGRIMAGE (ROMERÍA)
– The Pilgrimage (Romería): Takes place on the morning of opening day, Saturday, 15 August.
10:00 AM: Pilgrims, traditional horse-drawn carriages (enganches), and horsemen gather at the Paseo del Parque.
11:30 AM: The procession officially sets off, cutting through the historic city center toward the Sanctuary of La Victoria (Basílica Santuario de Santa María de la Victoria).
Arrival: Upon arrival, pilgrims present a traditional floral offering to the Virgin of Victory, the patron saint of Malaga
– This day/night split is traditional in Málaga: people enjoy the center during the day (with horses, flamenco dresses, etc.) and then move to the fairground at night.The 6 PM limit in the center has been in place for several years for noise and resident complaints reasons. TORROX
Socialist Municipal Group of Torrox deeply regrets the outcome of the Extraordinary Plenary Session– “The mayor preferred to talk about everything except the cleanliness of Torrox”: {Trans, summary}
– Torrox faces severe problems with street cleaning and waste collection, including overflowing bins, damaged facilities and accumulated dirt, prompting constant resident complaints. Socialists called an extraordinary council meeting to scrutinise a cleaning contract costing nearly €6 million annually and to demand solutions from the mayor.
– Instead of addressing deficiencies, breaches or unpaid services, the mayor diverted debate to unrelated topics such as goats, suits, friendships, and issues that had nothing to do with the cleanliness of Torrox. The Popular Party rejected a serious evaluation of the service.
– Socialists stressed their focus is not political confrontation but improving this essential service through better monitoring, planning and contract enforcement. “The residents don’t want excuses or distractions. They want to know why they are paying millions of euros for a service that is clearly not delivering the results Torrox deserves,” Socialist spokesperson Mari Nieves Ramírez stated. They recognise workers’ efforts while urging accountability to ensure public money delivers cleaner streets. Torrox, they say, deserves a government that confronts issues directly rather than avoiding them. NERJA
An elderly man drowns at La Torrecilla beach in Nerja: {Trans}
– An 80-year-old man drowned on Wednesday at La Torrecilla beach in Nerja, one of the town’s most popular beaches during the summer. The alarm was raised around 5:15 p.m. after several bathers spotted a person floating near the shore, according to Eugenio Cabezas in DiarioSUR.
– Lifeguards pulled the man from the water and began CPR on the sand, but were unable to save his life. Paramedics, local police, and the Civil Guard also arrived at the scene. The Civil Guard has taken over the investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident. ALMUÑÉCAR
A young man died in Almuñécar after falling from a balcony early Wednesday morning: {Trans}
– The San Juan festivities had a tragedy in Almuñécar. Around 8am, a young man of about 18 years of age and of foreign origin lost his life after falling from a balcony near the Paseo del Altillo. Local police and Civil Guard officers were immediately dispatched to the scene. The Judicial Police have taken over the investigation, and the body has been removed to determine the cause of death. A Ritual Killing On The Summer Solstice? Man found dead at stone circle summer solstice event ‘killed in most brutal way’:
– A 26-year-old man has been killed ‘in the most brutal way’ after his body was found at a historic stone circle during a summer solstice event. A murder investigation has been launched after emergency services were called to the Nine Ladies Stone Circle in Stanton Lees in Derbyshire on Monday.
– The man, who was pronounced dead, has not been formally identified but his family have been made aware. Officers have described his killing as ‘brutal’ and have urged anyone who was in the area for summer solstice celebrations to come forward.
– Nine Ladies Stone Circle is considered a sacred site by Pagans, with modern groups conducting rituals at the site, including weddings and the celebration of seasons. It dates back to the early Bronze Age stone circle ‘traditionally believed to depict nine ladies turned to stone as a penalty for dancing on Sunday’.
– Detective Inspector Tony Owen said: “I am urgently appealing for anyone who attended the summer solstice event over the weekend to please speak to officers as soon as they can. A young man’s life has been taken in the most brutal way so it is vital that myself and the team build up a clear picture of the exact circumstances surrounding his death.” Full article: https://metro.co.uk/2026/06/24/man-found-dead-stone-circle-summer-solstice-event-killed-brutal-way-28905617/
THE AMERICAS
Central & South America intensify their shift to the right with the victories of Espriella and Fujimori- “We are in a historic cycle change in the region”: {Trans, summary}
– The Americas have swung sharply to the right, with right-wing victories across Latin America confirming a broad conservative wave. Abelardo de la Espriella’s win in Colombia adds to recent triumphs by Rodrigo Paz in Bolivia, Jose Antonio Kast in Chile, Nasry Asfura in Honduras, Daniel Noboa’s re-election in Ecuador and Javier Milei’s legislative success in Argentina. Keiko Fujimori is also poised to win in Peru.
– These leaders, often echoing Trump, Milei or Bukele, offer tough measures on insecurity and immigration, plus economic policies to shrink the State. The shift responds to failures of prior left-wing governments to tackle key problems, fuelling voter dissatisfaction. Direct US influence under Trump, including financial aid and public endorsements, has boosted several campaigns. From Alaska to Ushuaia, right-wing governments now dominate, leaving only a few centrist or left outliers.
