SPAIN
Reducing the work day hours unlikely to pass vote Wednesday: {Translation, summary}
– The PSOE admits that there is little chance of pushing through the vote to reduce the working week to 37.5 hours in the face of opposition from the PP, Vox and, in particular, Junts, and is trying to distance itself from the issue championed by the vice-president and communist leader of Sumar, Yolanda Díaz.
– Socialist sources are pessimistic about Wednesday’s parliamentary debate, in which the amendments presented by the aforementioned parties will be put to a vote. The PP and Vox are considered lost causes, as is logical, and hopes that Carles Puigdemont’s Junts party will allow the process to continue are fading as Sanchez and Puigdemont argue over other issues, like the 2026 budget. After Sanchez accuses Israel of “genocide” and announces more sanctions, Israel brands Spain’s gov’t as “corrupt” and “anti-Semitic”, bans Yolanda Díaz and Sira Rego from entering the country: {Translation, summary, followed by full Israeli statement}
– Sánchez accused Israel of “genocide” and announced new restrictions on trade and institutional ties with Israel. The nine measures outlined by Sánchez focus on limiting trade, institutional cooperation, diplomatic contacts, and arms sales with Israel, while strengthening Spain’s support for Palestinian statehood and humanitarian relief in Gaza.
– Following Pedro Sánchez’s announcement, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar denounced the Spanish Government as “corrupt” and “antisemitic.” He accused Sánchez of using an anti-Israeli stance to distract from corruption scandals and of aligning with authoritarian regimes such as Iran and Venezuela. Saar also criticised Spain’s historical record toward Jews, citing the Inquisition, forced conversions and the fifteenth-century expulsion. He argued that the current government is deliberately damaging decades of bilateral relations.
– Saar imposed sanctions on Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Díaz and Minister Sira Rego, banning their entry into Israel and suspending contact, accusing Díaz of pushing Sánchez into adopting her anti-Israeli agenda. In response, Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun of Sumar said it was “a source of pride” that Díaz was barred. Sánchez, meanwhile, accused Israel of “genocide” and announced restrictions on trade and institutional ties. Saar warned of further measures against Spain.
– Now diplomatic relations between Spain and Israel are deteriorating. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has recalled the Spanish ambassador in Tel Aviv, Ana María Salomón, in response to the “slanderous accusations” against Spain and the “unacceptable measures” taken against ministers Yolanda Díaz and Sira Rego, whom Israel has banned from entering the country.
Sources, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/israel-tilda-gobierno-corrupto-antisemita-prohibe-entrada-pais-yolanda-diaz-sira-rego_6242606_0.html & https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/gobierno-llama-consultas-embajadora-tel-aviv-calumnias-israel-sanciones-diaz-rego_6242772_0.html
Full Israeli Statement From X Post:
– The attempt by the corrupt Sánchez administration to divert attention from serious corruption scandals through a continuous anti-Israeli and antisemitic offensive is transparent.
– The obsessive activism of the present Spanish Government against Israel stands out against the background of its ties with dark, tyrannical regimes – from the ayatollahs’ regime in Iran to the Maduro Government in Venezuela.
– Equally striking is the lack of historical awareness of Spain’s crimes against the Jewish people, including the crimes of the Inquisition, the forced conversions of religion, and the Expulsion of the Jews – the complete ethnic cleansing of Spain of Jews at the end of the fifteenth century.
– It should be remembered that Spain was the last of the Western European countries to establish diplomatic relations with Israel. The present Government of Spain is deliberately and crudely damaging these relations, which were built up steadily over decades under both Socialist and Conservative governments.
– Not every criticism of Israeli policy constitutes antisemitism. However, when it is marked by demonisation, delegitimization and double standards, it is antisemitism, according to the IHRA definition. The statements of members of the Spanish Government are tainted by all of these. So is its policy. This is antisemitism. Therefore, I have decided to raise the issue of the open antisemitism of members of the present Spanish Government before the plenary meeting of the IHRA. The Government of Israel, as the state of the Jewish people, has the duty to stand and warn against institutional antisemitism and to present it as it is, without disguise or embellishment.
– Furthermore, it is no longer possible to avoid imposing personal sanctions against members of the Spanish Government who have crossed every red line. Therefore, I have decided, together with Acting Minister of the Interior Yariv Levin and with the approval of the Prime Minister, that we shall impose personal sanctions as detailed below.
– The Deputy Prime Minister of Spain and Minister of Labour, Yolanda Díaz – her entry into Israel will be prohibited and Israel will not maintain any contact with her.
Already in October 2023, days after the massacre, Díaz accused Israel of committing war crimes.
In May 2024 – the day after Spanish recognition of a “Palestinian State” – she declared that this was “only the first step until Palestine is freed from the river to the sea,” a call which means the destruction of the State of Israel and which is banned in European countries such as Germany.
In October 2024, after the beginning of the ground manoeuvre in Lebanon (and after Israel had been attacked for a year from its territory), she called for international sanctions against Israel.
In December 2024 she called for a boycott of Israeli products and testified that she refrains from purchasing Israeli goods herself.
In April 2025 she called Israel a “genocide state” and demanded an arms embargo against it.
In July 2025 she called for a complete severing of relations.
It is clear that Díaz, leader of the extremist Sumar party, is exploiting Prime Minister Sánchez’s political weakness and is dragging him, step by step, into implementing her anti-Israeli and antisemitic vision.
– Similar sanctions will also be imposed against Sira Rego, Minister for Youth and Children, from the same party. Her entry into Israel will be prohibited and Israel will not maintain any contact with her.
On 7 October 2023 (!) Rego published a post justifying the massacre.
In April 2025 she called Israel “the genocide state,” opposed security trade with it and said that not even one euro should reach Israel.
In May 2025 she called for a complete severing of relations and for sanctions “against the genocide regime.” She urged the European Union to break off all relations with Israel and to impose sanctions at every level.
Last week she supported the violent demonstrations against the Israeli team in the international cycling competition “La Vuelta.”
Her declarations therefore clearly show support for terrorism and violence against Israelis.
– Accordingly, the entry of the above-mentioned ministers into Israel is prohibited and Israel will not maintain any contact with them.
– In addition, Israel will inform its allies of the hostile conduct of the Spanish Government and of the antisemitic and violent dimension in the statements of its ministers. It is important that Israel’s friends throughout the world can recognise the dangerous nature of the present Spanish administration.
– Further decisions will be taken in due course, in consultation with the Prime Minister. X Link
Parents Lament- The most expensive September ever- “And then they say we need to have more children!?!”: {Translation, summary}
– Spanish families are facing a deepening financial squeeze in September, with the impact falling hardest on larger households. Inflation has risen by 23% in the past five years while wages have increased only 11%, creating a widening gap between income and expenditure. Essential costs have soared: food prices are up 35% since 2020, electricity by 38%, and school supplies by 36%. The average monthly shopping bill now stands at 537 euros for couples with one child and 664 euros for large families, consuming up to half of their wages.
– Educational costs further compound the pressure. On average, parents spend around 449 euros per child on school materials, in addition to uniforms, transport, meals and extracurricular activities. After covering these essentials, many families have little or no capacity for savings. The VAT restoration has also increased pressure, with rates rising from 0% to 4% on basic foods and from 5% to 10% on pasta and sunflower oil.
– Despite these rising costs, support systems are poorly adapted to family size. Benefits are usually capped at three children, leaving larger households without proportional assistance. This structure discourages families from having more children, while at the same time penalising, or at least failing to provide extra support to, those who already do.

Puigdemont starts the countdown to decide whether to break with the government: {Translation, summary}
– Puigdemont has begun the countdown to decide whether Junts will break with the Government, telling Salvador Illa, Catalonia’s opposition leader, that relations with the Socialists are strained over the fulfilment of agreements for Sánchez’s investiture. Junts occasionally votes with the PP and Vox, distancing itself from the investiture majority, yet continues negotiations and maintains the “Swiss table” dialogue, a reference to ongoing informal discussions with the Socialists to resolve outstanding political issues.
– The party has pressed the Government on key matters, including recognition of Catalan as an EU official language, delegation of immigration powers to the Generalitat, and the amnesty debate, though these remain unresolved. Junts continues to leverage threats of withdrawal to secure concessions, but Sánchez has warned he can proceed without them supporting his 2026 budget, having stated a new budget is not even necessary, limiting their influence.
– Puigdemont recently faced setbacks: the EU Advocate General upheld the European Parliament’s revocation of his immunity, and Jaume Giró resigned from Junts’ leadership over strategic disagreements. Junts also faces pressure from the PSC, Aliança Catalana, and the ANC, with Puigdemont’s potential return dependent on national or European court decisions. COSTA DEL SOL
Spain’s state weather agency activates wind & wave alerts for entire coastline of Costa del Sol on Tuesday:
– The state body has activated a warning for coastal phenomena along the entire coastline of the province, from Manilva in the west to the Axarquia coast in the east.
– The yellow warning will be in force from 12 noon on Tuesday for wind from the west and southwest with gusts of 50 to 60 km/h (force 7) and waves of 2 to 3 metres.
– In addition to the strong gusts, local Malaga meteorology expert José Luis Escudero points to the arrival tomorrow, Tuesday, of the ‘terral’ wind. “However, the good news is that this time it will not be accompanied by high temperatures,” he said. Aemet forecasts highs of 30C and lows of 23 in Malaga city, the capital of the Costa del Sol.
– From Thursday onwards temperatures will rise throughout the country. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/spains-state-weather-agency-activates-alerts-for-20250908163858-nt.html
TORRE DEL MAR
Well attended Torre del Mar Airshow gets mixed reviews, not as spectacular as previous years: {Translation, summary of combined articles}
– Thousands of people have crowded the beach and the promenade of the municipality to witness the flight and acrobatics of more than thirty aircraft, including those of the Papea Patrol, whose helicopters and their parachute show have opened a show that has lasted for more than three hours.
– Compared with 2024/2023, 2025 offered fewer military fast-jet displays and lacked the Patrulla Águila; combined with poor weather, the show felt flat for some attendees, although some locals appreciated the decrease of noisy displays and sonic booms.
– The line-up looked thinner vs 2024/2023. 2024’s show featured both an F-18 and a Eurofighter demo; 2025 press/official lists only highlight one Eurofighter, plus the ASPA/PAPEA (Spanish Air Force helicopter & parachute display teams) and mostly civilian acts (Team Raven, etc).
– The was no Patrulla Águila this year. Spain’s flagship display team formally retired in June 2025, so they were absent — a big loss for fans used to seeing them at Torre del Mar and comparable shows. (They were on the 2023 billing alongside Patrouille Suisse.)
– The weather undercut the spectacle. Multiple reports note overcast skies and showers during the display.
– 2025’s main show ran “about four hours” (late morning to 15:00) with heavy emphasis on parachutists, police/Guardia Civil/Armada assets and aerobatic GA — which, combined with the single fast-jet act.
– Local outlets and officials are calling it a success with crowds estimated by some sources at 300,000.

RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA

This year, the network includes 43 establishments: 13 from Rincón de la Victoria itself, 26 from the wider province of Málaga (including 19 from Málaga city), and 4 from Madrid. Each restaurant is marked with a special sign so visitors can easily find them during the event. This spread helps promote the festival and its cuisine beyond the local area.

EUROPE
French government collapses in a confidence vote, forcing Macron to seek yet another prime minister:
– Legislators toppled France’s government in a confidence vote on Monday, a new crisis for Europe’s second-largest economy that obliges President Emmanuel Macron to search for a fourth prime minister in 12 months.
– Prime Minister François Bayrou was ousted overwhelmingly in a 364-194 vote against him. Bayrou paid the price for what appeared to be a staggering political miscalculation, gambling that lawmakers would back his view that France must slash public spending to rein in its debts. Instead, they seized on the vote that Bayrou called to gang up against the 74-year-old centrist who was appointed by Macron last December. Netanyahu appeals to the population in Gaza City to “get out of there” after destroying 50 residential towers: {Translation, summary}
– Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged residents of Gaza City to evacuate as the Israeli Army steps up its offensive, claiming Hamas uses residential towers for terrorist purposes. He announced that the Air Force has demolished 50 such buildings in recent days and warned that this was only the prelude to a larger ground operation now being prepared.
– Netanyahu stressed that his forces will continue to target “nests of terrorism” and warned civilians to leave the city. His remarks followed an attack at a Jerusalem bus stop in which two Palestinians killed six people, including a Spaniard. He declared that eliminating the attackers was insufficient and pledged to pursue their supporters and accomplices. The Israeli Army has reportedly cleared three refugee camps of “terrorist centres.”
– Meanwhile, Gaza authorities report more than 64,500 dead and 163,000 wounded, with international criticism mounting over Israel’s actions and worsening famine due to aid restrictions. SAS ordered to pay €180,000 to a patient who lost half his leg after 13 days without specialized care: {Translation, summary}
– A court in Seville has sentenced the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) to compensate a patient with 180,000 euros plus interest after he lost his right leg below the knee. The 55-year-old man first attended Osuna Hospital in November 2021 with necrosis in two toes, but spent 13 days without being transferred to a hospital with vascular surgery.
– He was initially treated in Écija Hospital, which lacked such specialists, before being referred to Virgen de Valme Hospital, where late revascularisation and further procedures ended with full amputation. The patient argued that earlier referral could have saved part of his foot and claimed 420,000 euros, also citing poor information given to him and his family.
– The court recognised a “loss of opportunity” for a better outcome, though noted diabetes and infection were contributory factors. The ruling is open to appeal, while campaigners demand more vascular surgery services in Seville. TRAVEL
Tourist accommodation providers continue to slam the 40 pieces of information they have to collect from each guest in Spain, 10 months and still no update as promised: {Summary}
– Six months after the ‘Marlaska decree’ came into effect, Spanish hoteliers continue to oppose the regulation requiring hotels and tourist platforms to collect over 40 pieces of guest information. The decree, implemented via Royal Decree 933/2021, has raised concerns about legality, compliance with European data protection rules, and the free movement of travellers.
– Cehat, representing hotels, tourist flats, campsites, resorts, and spas through 51 associations, urges the government to issue a ministerial order or repeal the system. President Jorge Marichal criticises the Ministry of the Interior for ignoring sector and European requests, creating administrative burdens and visitor discomfort. Cehat officials report that despite repeated meetings with the Ministry over more than three years, there has been no contact for the last ten months and no updates to the regulation. The Ministry had committed to drawing up a ministerial order prior to the decree’s enforcement in November 2024 and reaffirmed this commitment in January 2025, but has failed to deliver.
– European authorities have questioned Spain’s approach, noting its lack of proportionality and violation of data minimisation principles. The European Commission has emphasised compliance with Directive 2016/680 and is awaiting a final draft of the ministerial order. Cehat stresses that these repeated failures highlight the urgent need for a simple, legally compliant system that balances safety and operational practicality.
