Algarrobo’s weekend celebration of its patron saint, San Sebastián: Sat, 17 – Tues, 20, January:
– Algarrobo’s festivities for its patron saint, San Sebastián, feature a full weekend of public entertainment and performances in Parque de la Escalerilla.
– The main programme starts this Saturday in the Parque de la Escalerilla with late-night performances by the act Mecamela (23:00), followed by a set from DJ Luigy (00:30).
– The entertainment continues on Sunday, commencing with a traditional pasacalles street procession accompanied by a panda de verdiales. This is followed by the dance group Onda Sonora. A central social event is a communal lunch where the establishment Cortijo Paco serves migas, accompanied by free wine tastings (14:00). The afternoon schedule includes further dances with music from Miguel Botana and Onda Sonora, and a performance by Dany Cantos Company. To ensure access, the council is providing complimentary bus services from neighbouring areas throughout the weekend.
– The festivities will conclude on Tuesday with a final mass and a traditional street procession.

Who Voted For This Lunacy? Mandatory reporting of casual fishing results, photos of your daily catch will be required! The government delays the Big Brother of recreational fishing because the app does not yet exist: {Translation}
– The new mandatory catch reporting requirement via the PescaREC app is for sea fishing only. Freshwater anglers in Spain must comply with the rules and licensing systems of their respective autonomous region, which are separate from this national/EU maritime system.
– The obligation for recreational fishers to declare whether they have caught anything —or if they have returned home with a cool box as empty as their hook— will have to wait, because although the rule has already come into force, the Government’s application is still not available. In fact, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has not yet published the order regulating the monitoring of fishers.
– The system, named PescaREC, came into force on the 10th of January. It requires maritime recreational fishers —those who go out on a Sunday to clear their heads, not to fill a market— to electronically register each catch, each fish returned to the sea, and each unsuccessful outing, including photographs, linked to their fishing licence.
– All of this is in compliance with EU Regulation 2023/2842, which establishes that “reliable catch data relating to certain recreational fishing activities must be collected” to improve the management of marine resources. Civil Guard investigates a person in Torrox for the illegal capture of birds of protected species: {Translation}
– Personnel from the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard from Nerja and Vélez Málaga have investigated a person for crimes against wildlife and the use of prohibited trapping devices in Torrox. At the end of last year, information was received concerning an individual who was allegedly carrying out the illegal capture of finch-like birds near a local stream, for their subsequent commercial sale.
– After carrying out a series of actions to ascertain the identity of the perpetrator, the officers learned that this individual resided permanently on one of the two estates where he had installed prohibited trapping devices, meaning he was engaged in this type of activity on a continuous basis.
Four clap nets, one trap-cage containing a live goldfinch as a decoy, and one mist net installed directly in the stream bed where a common greenfinch was trapped were discovered.
– As a result, all the hunting devices he had distributed across the land to carry out the illegal captures were seized, along with another 4 prohibited nets he had stored. These are prohibited, non-selective means, some of which were homemade.
– Furthermore, a total of 38 finch-like birds, consisting of goldfinches {pic}, greenfinches, linnets and common greenfinches, were immediately released back into the wild. These are protected species listed in Annex II of the Bern Convention.
– The person responsible is being investigated for crimes against wildlife for the hunting, possession and destruction of protected species of wild fauna using non-selective and legally prohibited means. Immigration raids hit record levels across UK and Scotland:
– Immigration Enforcement activity has reached its highest level on record, with the Home Office reporting sharp increases in raids and arrests targeting illegal working across the UK, including a significant rise in operations in Scotland.
– According to figures released by the Home Office, enforcement teams carried out more than 17,400 raids nationwide between July 2024 and the end of December 2025, a 77 per cent increase compared with the previous period. Iran Protests Death Count Reaches 2000:
– About 2,000 people including security personnel have been killed in protests in Iran, an Iranian official said on Tuesday, the first time authorities have acknowledged the high death toll from an intense crackdown on two weeks of nationwide unrest.
– The Iranian official, speaking to Reuters, said that people he called terrorists were behind the deaths of both protesters and security personnel. The official, who declined to be named, did not give a breakdown of who had been killed.

More than 36 hours of agony in the Emergency Department of the Regional Hospital of Malaga waiting for a bed: {Translation, summary}

Some Dogs Learn New Words by Eavesdropping on Their Owners: {Summary}
– Clever canines that have a talent for learning vocabulary can pick up new words by simply overhearing their handlers’ conversations, say scientists.
– Parents and dog owners know that some words should not be spoken, but only spelled, to prevent small ears from eavesdropping on the conversation, and previous research has shown that, at the age of 18 months, toddlers can already learn new words by overhearing other people.
– Now a ground-breaking study, published in the journal Science, reveals that a special group of dogs are also able to learn names for objects just by overhearing their owners’ interactions. Similarly to the 18-month-old toddlers, scientists say gifted dogs also excel in learning from both situations of direct speech, and indirect speech.
– The authors suggest that the ability to learn from overheard speech may rely on general “socio-cognitive mechanisms” shared across species, rather than being uniquely tied to human language. A drug sales point in Motril is dismantled with five arrests: {Translation}

Andalucia branch international criminal organization called “Black Axe” taken down:

Ecologists denounce illegal clearing and works in the natural area of Maro: {Translation}
– The Cabinet for Nature Studies of the Axarquía (GENA–Ecologists in Action) has filed a complaint with the Territorial Delegation for Sustainability and Environment of the Andalusian Regional Government regarding clearance and construction work detected in the vicinity of El Cañuelo beach, within the Natural Area of the Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs.
– According to a statement released by the environmental association this Saturday, the activities have been taking place for approximately one month on a plot of land next to the former picnic area of the cove, which is currently inactive. GENA maintains that, subsequently, a vehicle allegedly accessed the cove without authorization to transport machinery intended for leveling the ground. – “The totality of the detected actions is incompatible with the protection regime of the natural area and constitutes a direct alteration of protected habitats,” state representatives from GENA. They emphasize that the area is protected under Law 2/1989 on Protected Natural Areas of Andalusia, forms part of the Natura 2000 network as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), and is catalogued as a Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance (SPAMI).
– The association points out that the Natural Resources Management Plan (PORN) and the Management and Use Master Plan (PRUG) for the area expressly prohibit unrestricted construction, especially without an environmental impact study submitted for public consultation. In their view, the works cannot be justified either as a dwelling, as it is a new building constructed after the declaration of the protected area, or as a picnic area or beach bar, since it is not included in the current Beaches Plan and El Cañuelo cove “has no tourist function.”

– Located under the Baltic Sea and 18 kilometres long, the Fehmarn tunnel will drastically reduce the journey time between Scandinavia and continental Europe. – “When I saw the tuna, I could not help buying it. DoctorLaptop’s Tips #120– Trouble In Linux-land, new graphics system “Wayland” being pushed in updates not ready for primetime yet: {DigameXtra Exclusive}
– Linux systems are currently switching to “Wayland”, a modern graphics system that controls how windows, menus, and the login screen are drawn, and away from the 30 year old, very reliable “X11” method. System updates are making this change without clearly alerting users. Wayland aims to make Linux feel smoother and safer, but the change has caused problems for users on popular Linux distros (systems). This problem has been documented in Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, Fedora and KDE distros; and on a variety of common desktop environments.
– A common issue shows up on the login page, where parts of the screen may flicker, look broken, or freeze, stopping people from typing their password properly. Another fail can happen when opening web browsers. Firefox works, but Chrome-based browsers, including Brave and Opera, won’t load due to a conflict with old graphics drivers, the browser may crash or refuse to open. Updating the graphics drivers, especially with Nvidia graphics cards, may fix the issue.
– The easiest fix to the entire problem is to switch back to the older system, X11, at the login page. Most Linux login screens include a small gear icon or menu near the password box. Clicking it reveals choices for how to start the desktop. Picking options like GNOME on Xorg, or X11 on Plasma, tells Linux to use X11 instead of Wayland. X11 has been around much longer and works with more computers, so this switch often repairs the login screen and lets browsers open normally again.
– I recommend sticking with X11 for at least another year. Give the developers a chance to work out the bugs. No reason for us to do their beta-testing for them.

– Have you ever thought that your charger has an expiration date? Although it may sound strange, these small electronic devices we use daily are not designed to last forever, and like other devices, they have a limited lifespan. In case you didn’t know, chargers hide a clue in the form of a symbol that indicates how long it is recommended to use them safely.
– On many chargers, this information is engraved directly onto the device, alongside other certification symbols. Just like food, over time, a charger’s components wear out and its performance can decline. This means slower charging and the accessory becomes less safe, increasing the risk of electrical faults or overheating.
– But how can we tell if our charger has expired? To find out, we need to look at the symbols engraved on the casing. For example, as can be seen in the image below, my laptop charger has a number inside a circle with arrows—similar to recycling symbols. The number ten indicates how many years of recommended use the charger has since it was manufactured, meaning I can safely use it for the next ten years.
– Once the expiry date arrives, even though the charger may still work, its safety and efficiency may decrease. Over time, materials can degrade, increasing the risk of faults, including the possibility of a short circuit, so it is not advisable to keep using it long after its estimated lifespan.
– Other symbols to watch for on your charger– each symbol serves an important function related to safety, compatibility, or durability. Understanding the meaning of each one can help us use the device safely:

– Attorney General Pam Bondi posted that the pair had been indicted in the Southern District of New York, referencing a 2020 indictment on drug conspiracy and other charges.
“They will soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts,” she said on X.

– The ECB decided to keep eurozone interest rates unchanged in its December meeting, marking four consecutive sessions without alteration. This impacts the Euríbor’s trajectory, which is likely to remain stable in coming months.
– ECB President Christine Lagarde explained the monetary policy decision at her press conference, stating that the bank “is in a good place” with rates at 2 per cent, though this stance is not fixed and will depend on economic developments. Man trapped under three metres of rubble rescued in Almayate: {Translation}
