The Ceuta Border Crisis– A DigameXtra Investigation & Analysis

Part 1 – How did a gathering and subsequent surge of 72,000+ migrants into a tiny Spanish enclave go unnoticed in the days leading up to the event?
– In a 48 hour period last week, a government estimate of 72,000 people crossed from Morocco into Ceuta – up to three-quarters of the city’s entire population.[13] Mostly young Moroccan men, but with a significant number of men from other African nations, plus some women and hundreds of children, swam, waded or floated around the El Tarajal breakwater into Spanish territory in one of the largest sudden border surges in modern European history. Days later, the question of who – or what – orchestrated it remains unresolved. – Most of those who entered have since returned to Morocco, either voluntarily or through coordinated procedures, but hundreds remained in Ceuta, with groups reported in streets, parks, coastal areas and the hills surrounding the city. Many were also concentrated near the Temporary Centre for Immigrant Reception (CETI), which was already beyond capacity during the emergency.[1][2] More than 1,000 people required medical attention during the crisis, while recovery teams continued searching coastal areas as the confirmed death toll increased.[1] – Spanish authorities initially blamed migrant trafficking networks for encouraging and facilitating the mass arrival. However, subsequent reports indicate that the mobilisation involved several factors, including social media campaigns, online discussions about Spanish immigration law, advance preparation by participants and possible exploitation by organised criminal groups after the initial crossings.[3][4][5] – One of the strongest elements emerging from investigations is the role of social media. Spanish and Moroccan reports describe Facebook groups, TikTok videos, Instagram posts, WhatsApp messages and X accounts being used during July to share information about travelling to Ceuta, including routes, meeting points and updates from people attempting the crossing.[4][5][6] Reports from Morocco described online groups where users exchanged information about reaching the border area, while Spanish investigations identified videos encouraging young Moroccans to participate and showing possible crossing routes. The online activity does not identify a single organiser behind the movement. Instead, available reports point towards a decentralised mobilisation in which different accounts and groups spread similar messages, allowing large numbers of people to act at the same time.[6] – Another factor being examined is the influence of a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling concerning migrants arriving by sea. Following the ruling, simplified interpretations circulated online suggesting that migrants who reached Spanish territory by swimming from Morocco could not immediately be returned.[5][7] Several reports indicate that this interpretation became one of the main messages circulating among potential participants. The belief that reaching Ceuta by sea offered a greater chance of remaining in Spain appears to have encouraged some migrants to attempt the crossing.[5][6][7] More about this in Part 2. – Evidence also suggests that many participants prepared before travelling. Reports indicate that wetsuits, flotation devices and other equipment were being purchased in northern Morocco before the mass crossings took place.[8] Social media posts reportedly included advice about equipment and routes towards Ceuta.[6][8] The preparation does not prove that a central organisation planned the operation, but it suggests that many participants had decided to travel before the crossings began rather than acting spontaneously on the day. – The sequence of events has therefore become a key part of the investigation. Online activity increased during July, information about the Supreme Court ruling spread widely, equipment was reportedly purchased in advance, and thousands of people travelled towards Ceuta within a short period.[6][7][8] The remaining questions include who first promoted the mobilisation, how widely it was amplified, what role criminal networks played and whether authorities on either side of the border had advance knowledge of the scale of the movement.
Part 2 – Morocco, trafficking networks and intelligence warnings
– Spanish authorities initially blamed criminal “migrant trafficking networks” for the mass arrival, but available evidence suggests their role may have been more significant after the crossings than in organising the initial movement.[3] Most migrants entered Ceuta by swimming around the El Tarajal breakwater, using flotation devices or wetsuits rather than organised boats. After the crossings, the Guardia Civil investigated attempts by criminal groups to move migrants from Ceuta towards mainland Spain, including operations involving jet skis and speedboats around the Campo de Gibraltar coast.[3][4] Reports indicate that criminal groups may have attempted to exploit the situation afterwards, while social media played a central role in spreading information and encouraging participation. – Morocco’s role remains one of the main unresolved issues. Several Spanish reports claim that the Guardia Civil detected Moroccan intelligence agents among the migrants who entered Ceuta.[5] The presence of intelligence personnel does not prove that Morocco organised the operation, as security services may also monitor major border movements. Other reports suggest that Morocco may have allowed the mobilisation to develop because of wider tensions with Spain, including disputes over migration and diplomatic issues.[6] However, publicly available evidence does not currently prove that Rabat planned or directed the mass crossing. – A separate investigation concerns possible Algerian links. According to La Razón, some online activity connected with the mobilisation involved WhatsApp groups using Algerian telephone numbers.[7] This indicates that the online campaign extended beyond Morocco, but does not prove involvement by the Algerian Government. The accounts could belong to private individuals, migrant networks or other groups. The wider online mobilisation shows that information about the crossing spread across multiple networks, but responsibility for creating or directing those networks remains unclear. – The question of advance warnings has become a major political dispute in Spain. Several reports claim that the National Intelligence Centre (CNI) specifically warned authorities before the crisis that online activity indicated a growing risk of a large-scale attempt to reach Ceuta.[8][9] The Government denies receiving a specific warning predicting the scale of the eventual crossing.[8] The dispute centres on what information existed, when it was received and how it was assessed. A general warning about increased migration pressure would not necessarily have predicted that tens of thousands of people would attempt the crossing within days. – The Government’s handling of the crisis has also generated controversy. Opposition parties accuse the authorities of minimising the seriousness of the situation and failing to act on warnings, while ministers reject those claims.[8][9] Further controversy followed reports that information published by General Loreto Hurtado, head of Spain’s National Security Department, estimating the number of migrants crossing into Ceuta, resulted in her summary dismissal.[11] This has increased political debate over how the Government communicated the emergency, and raises questions as to why the government would punish a high ranking official for letting crucial facts be known to Ceuta’s residents. – The Interior Ministry has installed a containment barrier at the El Tarajal breakwater, saying it is intended to strengthen border security and prevent future mass swimming crossings from Morocco.[12] Critics argue that the barrier, being relatively low, would not physically stop determined swimmers. Its main purpose may be linked to border identification, or the application of immigration procedures. Following recent court decisions concerning returns, as those arriving by sea cannot be immediately returned but must be processed, while those arriving by land, or by “evading barriers”, such as this floating “containment barrier”, can be returned immediately.[12]
Part 3 – Conclusions and sources
– The available evidence indicates that the Ceuta crisis was the result of several overlapping factors rather than a single cause. Social media provided the mechanism for rapid mobilisation, while online discussions about Spanish immigration procedures and the Supreme Court ruling appear to have influenced expectations among some participants.[4][5][7] – The evidence also suggests that many migrants prepared before travelling, with reports of equipment purchases and online sharing of routes and crossing information before the mass arrival.[6][8] However, the available information does not establish who first initiated the mobilisation or whether any organisation controlled the movement. – The role of criminal networks remains unclear. While authorities have investigated trafficking groups attempting to exploit the aftermath of the crossings, there is currently no public evidence proving that traditional smuggling networks organised the original mass entry.[3][4] – Questions also remain over the role of Morocco and the actions of Spanish authorities. Reports concerning Moroccan intelligence personnel among the migrants, possible prior knowledge of the mobilisation and claims of advance warnings from Spanish intelligence agencies have increased political pressure for further investigation.[5][8][9][10] At present, these reports raise questions but do not provide definitive proof of direct state involvement by any country. – The Ceuta crisis demonstrates how digital communication can transform a local border event into a large-scale movement within a short period. The combination of social media “flash-mob” style mobilisation, legal expectations, advance preparation and geopolitical tensions created conditions that allowed tens of thousands of people to attempt the crossing almost simultaneously. – Further investigation will be needed to determine who promoted the mobilisation, how much authorities on both sides of the border knew beforehand, and whether additional measures could have reduced the scale of the crisis. **The latest news before publication** – At last count, the government reports 75 deaths.[14] – Authorities in Ceuta said they are currently caring for around 1,000 unaccompanied migrant children who remain in the enclave after the crossing. The Spanish government has also announced an additional €25 million ($29 million) in emergency funding to support their care.[15] – New reports claim young men from Morocco are promoting a new mass assault on Ceuta next week, the night of Saturday, August 15th.[14]

Ceuta grapples with aftermath of border surge after most migrants leave the Spanish territory: {Summary} – Ceuta is gradually returning to normal after an estimated 60,000 migrants crossed into the Spanish enclave from Morocco in just two days, triggering one of the largest border crises in recent European history. Most of those who entered have since returned to Morocco, either voluntarily or through coordinated returns by the authorities. However, hundreds remain in Ceuta, with many hiding in the surrounding hills or relying on food and water distributed by local residents and the military while hoping to eventually reach mainland Spain. – The confirmed death toll has risen to at least 72 as recovery teams continue searching the coastline, while more than 1,000 people required medical treatment during the emergency. – Although the streets are largely calm again, the crisis has left deep divisions within the multicultural city. Sub-Saharan Africans Used Migrant “invasion” To Mix In & Enter Spain With The Moroccans, Ceuta City President Claims 10,000 Remain Overall: {Trans, summary} – Three days after the mass entry of migrants into Ceuta from Morocco, hundreds or even thousands of foreigners are still scattered throughout the autonomous city, with no intention of returning to the other side of the border. They are gathering in parks, streets and around the Temporary Stay Centre for Immigrants (CETI). – The most central streets of the autonomous city, and especially some areas on the outskirts and in the hills, still have the presence of several groups of migrants who entered last Thursday and are refusing to return voluntarily to their country of origin. According to police sources, the number of people refusing to leave the city is very difficult to quantify, although small groups of between three and five migrants can still be seen in different areas. – The Government Delegate in Ceuta, Miguel Ángel Pérez, warned on Sunday that the number of migrants still remaining in the city could not be calculated, while the President of the City, Juan Jesús Vivas (PP), has raised the figure to more than 10,000 people. – Members of the Army and the Local Police are informing these people that they must return towards the border, as they will not be granted legal status in any way because they entered the country illegally, and that the only solution is their deportation. – Another hotspot in the autonomous city is the CETI. More than 1,000 migrants, the majority from sub-Saharan Africa, are waiting at the entrance to gain access to the facility, which not only has all of its 512 available places occupied but is also currently housing more than 700 people. – There are also hundreds of foreigners camped in the hills near the CETI, waiting for places to become available as people are transferred to mainland Spain, allowing them to enter the centre. More than fifty percent of those occupying the area around the CETI are sub-Saharan migrants who have been able to enter the city in recent hours, taking advantage of the situation created by the mass arrival of people from Morocco. The National Police have established a security operation around the CETI, while Army personnel are providing water to those waiting outside. – Benítez Beach, located near the CETI, is completely occupied by these migrants, while police are controlling access roads to prevent people entering the centre’s access route and causing further congestion in the surrounding area. – The situation follows an incident on Saturday night when the National Police had to intervene after migrants camped outside the CETI attempted to force their way into the facility. Starting Sunday in EU, AI chatbots, receptionists, media must reveal they are not human: – Starting Sunday, conversations with chatbots, AI-generated photos or videos, and AI receptionists must immediately make clear that the system is artificial intelligence rather than a human. The requirement comes from the European Union’s AI Act, the world’s first comprehensive law regulating the development and use of AI systems. The law took effect two years ago and is now being phased in. The stricter transparency rules that took effect Sunday are one of those stages. – Existing AI systems have until Dec. 2 to make the required changes. New AI applications must meet the stricter transparency requirements immediately from this coming month. The rules apply to all interaction with an AI system. “So also, for example, commercials on TV made with the help of artificial intelligence,” a spokesperson for the Dutch Data Protection Authority said. – How the AI is used matters. Supermarket chain Aldi said its AI-generated voice needs no marking “because the script of the commercial is written by a human and is only spoken with the help of AI.” When AI is used to create photos in its ads, the company will add an AI marking. Ceuta Migrant Crisis- Explainer & Analysis: {DigameXtra Exclusive} – The Ceuta border crisis appears to have ended almost as quickly as it began, after an estimated 40,000 to 60,000 people converged on the Spanish enclave over two days in one of the largest mass migration incidents ever seen at the frontier. – The influx overwhelmed local authorities, prompting Spain to deploy extra police and military personnel while Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited Ceuta to assess the situation. A floating sea barrier is now being installed to strengthen border security and deter further crossings. – Spanish officials say the vast majority of those who entered have already returned to Morocco, either voluntarily or through coordinated returns, leaving only a relatively small number still in Ceuta. – The crisis claimed more than 50 lives, with people dying in the sea and during the chaotic attempts to reach Spanish territory. Recovery operations have continued along the coastline as authorities work to establish the final death toll. – While Spanish and Moroccan officials have pointed to migrant trafficking networks as a driving force behind the mass movement, the exact cause remains under investigation. But considering that human smuggling gangs make their money selling boat rides, not swimming permits, there was no clear financial motivation for them to have organized this. – An alternative explanation emerging from Spanish and Moroccan media proves social media played a crucial role in mobilising thousands of mainly young Moroccans. Reports describe Facebook groups, TikTok, Instagram, X and WhatsApp being used to share maps, crossing points, sea conditions and real-time updates, rapidly spreading news of the attempted crossings and encouraging others to join. – Whether this represented a spontaneous social media flash-mob, an organised campaign, or was exploited by criminal trafficking networks has yet to be established. No single explanation has been confirmed. It has been noted that a recent Spanish court decision that specifies migrants arriving by sea must be allowed to stay and be processed before expulsion was announced and spread across social media, possibly encouraging migrants to make the crossing asap before the ruling is over-turned by a higher court. – Other theories as to the root of the crisis– political efforts to destabilise Spain. It is suggested Morocco is upset with Spain over Sanchez’s trip to Algeria so they did very little to prevent the crisis; and a theory Russia is upset with Spain for promoting more Ukraine War sanctions on them, so they want to rattle Sanchez’s cage by making him look weak and feckless on the world stage. Neither theory has been supported by verifiable evidence. – The events have also triggered wider concern across Europe. France strengthened checks at its border with Spain, while Italy announced temporary border controls for arrivals from Spain, highlighting fears that the Ceuta crisis could have wider implications for European border security. – Although the immediate emergency appears to have subsided, questions remain over how such a large mobilisation developed so quickly and why such a large mobilisation was not prevented before thousands reached the border. -Ed.

Gasoline prices rise by 15% after their fourth consecutive increase on the eve of the August holiday exodus, the most expensive since 2023: {Trans, summary} – Fuel prices in Spain have risen for a fourth consecutive week following the restoration of 21% VAT at the start of the month, making fuel more than 15% more expensive over the past month. Inflation reaches its highest level in more than two years– it climbs to 3.5% in July after the end of tax breaks on gasoline and the rise in electricity prices: {Trans, summary} – Spain’s annual inflation rate rose from 3.2% to 3.5% in July, reaching its highest level in more than two years. The increase was driven mainly by higher fuel and electricity prices after reduced VAT and other tax relief introduced earlier this year expired. The ‘Submerged Wines’ Project: {Trans, summary} – Malaga Bay is being used as a natural laboratory to investigate whether storing wine underwater genuinely changes its characteristics. The ‘Submerged Wines’ project, led by the University of Malaga with support from organisations including the Costa del Sol Axarquía association and local wine bodies, aims to replace marketing claims with scientific evidence. – Researchers submerged 160 bottles of white, red and sweet wines from seven Malaga area wineries at a depth of ten metres for five months. Identical bottles were stored in a conventional cellar to allow direct comparison under controlled conditions. Environmental factors such as temperature and depth were recorded throughout the experiment. – A controlled blind tasting involving specialists is scheduled for October to determine whether underwater storage produces measurable differences. Researchers have already noticed that one white wine developed a more golden colour, but stress that laboratory analysis and blind tastings must establish whether the change is scientifically significant. – If underwater ageing proves beneficial, Axarquía wineries could market premium wines at higher prices. The Virgin of the Snows will once again parade through the streets of Torrox on the main day of the patron saint festivities: {Trans, summary} – Torrox is counting down the hours until August 5th, its main festival day in honour of its patron saints, la Virgen de las Nieves, and San Roque (Our Lady of the Snows, and Saint Roch- patron saint against plague and infectious diseases). The day will once again bring together hundreds of residents and devotees for a religious program culminating in the traditional procession through the town’s streets, an event that this year will include several new features to enhance the route of the religious images. – Among the main new features is the installation of a large, temporary dome, seven meters high, in the Plaza de la Constitución. This structure will enhance the procession of the Virgin of the Snows and Saint Roch through one of the town’s most emblematic locations. In addition, the Brotherhood’s Perseverance Group will create special decorations along the processional route. Furthermore, the new ambo, lectern, and Paschal candle holder donated to the parish will be blessed during the day. – The events will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a solemn religious service in honour of the patron saints, presided over by parish priest José Manuel González, and featuring musical accompaniment by the Santa María de la Victoria Choir of Málaga. Afterwards, around 12:15 p.m., the cloistered procession with the Blessed Sacrament and the veneration of the religious images will take place. – Later in the evening, at 8:30 p.m., another Mass will be celebrated, after which the eagerly awaited procession of Our Lady of the Snows and Saint Roch will begin through the streets of Torrox’s historic center. The route will proceed through Plaza de la Constitución, Calle Baja, Plaza de la Hoya, Calle Alta, Calle Almedina, Calle Rabitilla, Calle Baja, Plaza de la Constitución, and back to the parish church, accompanied by the Torrox Municipal Band and the Band of Bugles and Drums of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth from Vélez-Málaga. They steal more than 13,000 meters of copper cable in the northern area of Granada in less than a month: {Trans, summary} – The theft of more than 13,000 metres of public street lighting cable in Granada’s Norte district during July has triggered a major National Police operation. The thefts, committed between 11 and 29 July across around 20 streets, particularly affected the San Francisco neighbourhood and the Recinto Ferial area. The stolen copper and resulting damage are valued at nearly €50,000. – Police have arrested four suspects and identified nine people believed to be involved, most with previous police records. Three vehicles allegedly used to transport the stolen copper have also been identified. – One suspect was caught cutting street lighting cables and was later arrested again while stealing more cable. Another was found inside an underground cable chamber, while a third was removing copper pipes and electrical wiring from a sports facility. Three arrested in Vélez-Málaga after trying to force their way into a home: {Trans, summary} – Three men have been arrested in Vélez-Málaga after allegedly attempting to break into a house on Calle Murcia in the Zona Hispanidad neighbourhood during the early hours of Tuesday. – The attempted burglary was foiled thanks to a vigilant resident, who called the 112 emergency service at around 1.30am after spotting several masked men trying to force entry into a neighbour’s home. The caller reported that one of the suspects smashed a window with a brick. – National Police responded, but as officers arrived they saw a car leaving the street at high speed with its lights switched off. A man has been arrested after a human torso was found next to the road near the quarries in Alhaurín de la Torre: {Trans} – The Civil Guard has opened an investigation following the discovery of human remains on Tuesday morning in the municipality of Alhaurín de la Torre, specifically near the quarry road. After locating the body, officers arrested one person and are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. – According to sources close to the case consulted by this newspaper, the remains found on the ground correspond to the torso of a person, which would initially make it difficult to identify the body. – Along with specialists from the Civil Guard, a judicial delegation has traveled to the area to recover the body and transport it to the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) in Málaga. Additionally, the study reveals that 7.2% of customers have been pressured by their banks to purchase unwanted or unnecessary products, and 12.5% of Spanish users have incurred higher-than-expected costs associated with their accounts, a percentage that again stands out as the highest compared to Portugal, Italy, and Belgium. – Spain leads the way compared to the other three countries analyzed, both in problems related to erroneous charges and in complaints about pressure to sell financial products. However, recovering on claims often depends on the willingness of the financial institutions themselves to resolve the errors or compensate customers, even in the face of favourable rulings from supervisory bodies such as the Bank of Spain, the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV), or the Directorate General of Insurance and Pension Funds, according to experts at OCU Inversiones. – In this context, OCU urges the Spanish Government to approve without delay the creation of the Independent Administrative Authority for the Defense of Financial Customers, a reform that has been pending for years and which includes binding resolutions for entities in claims of up to 20,000 euros. – Recently, the Minister of Economy, Trade and Business, Carlos Cuerpo, pledged to resume processing this measure in September, which could significantly improve the situation for banking consumers. Double earthquake in Andalusia- Granada shakes with a 3.6 magnitude quake after a deeper one in Sayalonga (Malaga): {Trans, summary} – This Sunday many residents of Granada had quite a scare. PP Blames Wildfire Crisis on Overprotected Forests and Restrictive Land Management: {Trans, summary} – The People’s Party (PP) argues that Spain’s wildfire crisis has been made worse by forest management policies that have left woodlands both overprotected and neglected. Roots Of The Wildfires– explained by ASAJA, the Asociación Agraria de Jóvenes Agricultores (Agricultural Association of Young Farmers), despite the name it is not limited to young farmers. It is one of Spain’s largest and most influential agricultural organisations with national & international lobbying groups: {Trans} – The creation of a committee of experts to analyse the causes of forest fires has failed to convince ASAJA Vice-President Juan Luis Delgado. In an interview with esRadio, he argued that those who live and work in the countryside have been warning for years about the deterioration of Spain’s forests and called for farmers, livestock breeders and rural residents to be listened to before any new measures are introduced. – Interviewed by Sandra León on La Noche de Cuesta, Delgado expressed concern over the Government’s announcement and said: “The idea of yet another new scientific body they want to establish fills me with dread,” arguing that decisions affecting rural areas are being made “from offices far removed from the rural world.” – The ASAJA Vice-President began by expressing solidarity with those affected by the fires and with the emergency crews fighting them, before arguing that the current situation “was entirely predictable”. In his view, forest fires have always existed, but in the past they were kept under control because people still lived in rural villages and the forests were constantly managed and used. – He believes the real problem lies in the gradual abandonment of rural areas and the restrictions placed on forest management. “The countryside has been completely abandoned, and so have all the people who live there,” he said, regretting that neither farmers nor livestock breeders have been consulted when designing forestry policies. – During the interview, Delgado criticised the administrative obstacles that, he said, forest owners face even when carrying out basic maintenance work. – As an example, he pointed to restrictions on cutting branches above a certain thickness because, according to the rules, doing so could damage the tree. However, he argued that the ban often has the opposite effect, as trees are eventually blown down by strong winds, creating an even greater build-up of combustible material. – He also criticised the requirement to obtain prior authorisation for many routine tasks. “We have far more paperwork, and we spend more time dealing with bureaucracy than actually managing the land,” he said. – The ASAJA Vice-President also questioned some of the measures included in the eco-schemes of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), introduced as part of the European Green Deal. He explained that certain subsidies require grazing land to remain unused until 1 September, which, in his opinion, encourages the build-up of dry vegetation during the height of summer. “If a fire starts in that environment now, there is no way anyone will be able to control it,” he warned. He also criticised the requirement to establish certain strips of vegetation, arguing that “those hedges are fuel” and that such measures are based more on theoretical ideas than on practical knowledge of the countryside. – Asked who he considered responsible for the current situation, Delgado rejected the idea of blaming a single authority. He noted that many of the regulations originate from the European Union but pointed out that member states also play a role in drafting them. “You cannot say the blame lies with just one party. I believe it rests with all those responsible for managing these matters,” he said, adding that farming organisations repeatedly put forward proposals which are simply ignored. – As for possible solutions, Delgado called for policies that encourage people to return to rural areas, reduce bureaucracy and make it easier for farmers and livestock breeders to help with both fire prevention and the initial response to outbreaks. He suggested that people who already have water tankers and agricultural machinery should be equipped to intervene when fires first break out. He also urged owners of forest land to keep their properties clear of combustible material and regretted that interest in fire prevention tends to disappear once major wildfires have been brought under control. – In conclusion, he called for the proposed committee of experts to include people with direct, practical experience of working on the land. “The greatest expert who could probably offer some valuable insight would be the oldest resident of any village in this country,” he said, arguing that practical experience of rural life should carry far greater weight in forest management. Report– Spain Failed to Spend Most EU Funds Earmarked for Wildfire Prevention: {Trans, summary} – Spain is facing another severe wildfire season despite having hundreds of millions of euros in available European funding that has yet to be spent on prevention. According to AIReF (Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility), only €105.7 million of the €401 million allocated for sustainable forest management, climate risk prevention and firefighting had been formally committed by July 2026, just 26.4% of the total. Nearly €295 million remained unused, while only about 120 of more than 310 planned projects had started. – The Government says €1.709 billion has been invested in measures linked to wildfire prevention, but that is a grossly inflated figure, it includes wider environmental programmes such as ecosystem restoration, water management and flood prevention rather than spending specifically targeted at forest fires. – AIReF concludes the problem is not a shortage of funding but delays in implementation. It calls on the Government to publish a detailed breakdown of spending and a timetable for allocating the remaining funds before further wildfire seasons. – {The reason the funds for these fire prevention projects has not been spent, I believe, is because Sanchez is saving all the European Funds he can, designated for any purpose, for re-allocations to cover the Social Security pensions deficit. Manufacturers will have to repair mobile phones and household appliances that are out of warranty– this is what the new law, which will soon come into force, says: {Trans, summary} – New EU rules taking effect from 31 July give consumers stronger rights to repair a range of household appliances and electronic devices, even after the legal warranty has expired. – Manufacturers must offer repairs when technically possible for products covered by EU repairability rules, including mobile phones, tablets, televisions, washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners and tumble dryers. They cannot refuse a repair simply because an independent company repaired the item previously. – Repairs outside the warranty period do not have to be free, but manufacturers may only charge reasonable prices and cannot use excessive costs to discourage repairs. They must also complete repairs within a reasonable time and may provide a temporary replacement device in some cases. – The legislation also improves access to spare parts, repair tools and service information, making it easier for both official and independent repair businesses to fix products and helping consumers keep appliances working for longer. No hard evidence, and certainly not the reality of the situation on the ground. Locals living and working in forrest areas have been complaining for decades about the neglected state of forests, and the ever growing list of greeny-restrictions blocking forest management operations: don’t disturb the moss; avoid salamander habitat; burning bans; logging prohibitions, tractors must stay on established trails, etc. This is documented in thousands of council meeting minutes and town hall complaint forms– real eye witness info from people who live there, not deceptive political jargon from an office clerk in Madrid. Two Meteor Showers Peak This Week– How to See More Shooting Stars Despite the Bright Moon: – A rare meteor shower event arrives this week as the Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids reach their peak on the same night. Wildfires in Spain, live updates– The fight against the fire continues in Guadalajara and other critical areas while the fire in Almorox is expected to be stabilized within “hours”: {Trans} – Spain faces another day marked by several intense wildfires. The prolonged water shortage has caused significant problems in both the agricultural and tourism sectors. – The breakdown began on July 12 and has affected approximately 300 hectares of crops, mainly mangoes and avocados, as well as horticultural farms, gardens and other agricultural uses, in the middle of the summer season and at one of the most critical times for fruit development. – Repair work began early Wednesday morning and is expected to last approximately 16 hours. Once the new pump is installed, the entire network will be gradually refilled to restore water service to the affected homes and farms. Triana (Vélez-Málaga) celebrates the 9th Perseid Meteor Shower Night Route, an experience that unites nature, astronomy and solidarity: {Trans} – Once again, Triana will host its Perseids Night Walk on 10 August, a hiking event that has become a local tradition during the annual meteor shower, one of the year’s most notable astronomical events. The ninth edition is organised by Triana Corazón de la Axarquía, together with APTA, Vélez-Málaga Town Hall and the Triana Deputy Mayor’s Office, with support from various organisations and community groups. Participants will once again walk to the Atalaya Tower, where the astronomical observation will take place. The site is considered ideal for stargazing because of its low levels of light pollution. – The observation session will be led by Juan Carlos, an outreach astronomer from the Sirio Astronomical Association, who will explain the meteor shower phenomenon. The Perseids are caused by particles of dust and ice entering the Earth’s atmosphere at high speed, where they burn up and create the bright streaks commonly known as shooting stars. – The walk is graded as medium to high difficulty and covers a total distance of 13 kilometres along agricultural tracks surrounded by mango and avocado plantations. The walk starts at 20:15, with the return scheduled during the early hours of the morning. Participation is limited to 200 people. – Registration costs €10. Of this, €5 will be donated to the Valeriana Association, which supports people with mental health conditions and their families, while the remaining €5 will cover organisational costs. A “Kilometre 0” donation option will also be available for anyone wishing to support the association without taking part in the walk.
