Sierra Nevada’s V Sun & Snow Festival: Friday 5 thru Sunday 7 April The festival celebrates its fifth anniversary, it will merge electronic music and natural beauty of the winter season. Visitors who come to Sierra Nevada during these first spring days will be able to enjoy about thirty live performances and, after the last snowfalls, will find the best snow conditions of the whole season, both for quantity and quality. The organization of the festival “has prepared a very careful musical programming,” seeking the confluence between house sound and avant-garde electronics, with the eclectic and avant-garde city of Berlin as inspiration. It will have several scenarios, both in Pradollano and Borreguiles, and with performances throughout the day, with morning shifts, afternoon and night. Compare Funerals cover the whole of Spain ruthforder@comparefuneral.org * Direct Cremation €2,250 * Collection of deceased and conveyance to Funeral Home * Supply of coffin * Preparation and care of deceased * Registration of death and certification of all legal documentation * Cremation and any doctor’s fees * Supply of Urn * Delivery of Urn and associated paperwork to family (death certificate, cremation certificate etc) This plan is exclusive to a number of provinces, please ask advisor for more information. Contact Ruth Forder on 0034 693 715 718 ; Comparefuneral.org Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain – Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions. – Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials. – Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be. – Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name. – What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you. – Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

Major 750-million-euro ‘water highway’ project in Malaga gets backing from key agricultural groups: – The infrastructure, proposed by Dcoop president Antonio Luque, would consist of 120 kilometres of pipes, connected to the Guadalhorce wastewater treatment plant, which would supply recycled water to parched areas in the northern part of Malaga province. The project has an estimated cost of 750 million euros and now needs the support of the administrations to fund it. – Asaja president Baldomero Bellido told SUR the water highway is “key to guaranteeing the survival of agriculture”. “We cannot allow wastewater to be poured into the sea with the current drought,” he said. Bellido appealed to the Junta de Andalucía, Spain’s national government and the European Union to help turn the project into a reality. Image: Alba Martín Campos. Infoca works with air assets against a forest fire declared in Otívar (Granada): {Translation} – The Infoca Plan has mobilised up to four helicopters in a forest fire declared at noon on Tuesday in the surroundings of the place of the Río Verde, in the municipality of Otívar, in the region of the coast of Granada, whose evolution in principle is favourable. – Sources consulted by Europa Press have indicated that the fire, in which, around 14.00 hours, the deployed operation continues to work for its stabilization with three aerial means, is totally forest, without nearby population centres. – In social networks, the Infoca has indicated that at 12:19 hours, with the declaration of the fire, three semi-heavy helicopters were mobilised, and one Super Puma type, along with two groups of forest firefighters, and two reinforcement brigades, two operations technicians, and an environmental agent, in addition to two fire engines. The second best olive oil in the world is made in Andalucía- ‘We examine the olives every 24 hours’: – The best olive oil in Spain and the second best in the world is made in Andalucía. To be more precise, in Baeza, in the province of Jaén, where a cooperative, Campos de Biatia, has created a limited edition extra virgin olive oil under the name La Dama Íbera. This high quality oil has recently been recognised for its incredible characteristics in the prestigious Evooleum Guide 2024. – The limited edition La Dama Íbera was launched on the market with 8,000 half-litre bottles at a price of 20 euros. And although it is still possible to buy it through its website and various gourmet shops, there are fewer and fewer bottles left. TECH
DoctorLaptops Tips #107: Free tools for online researchers, writers, bloggers & journalism students – remove the hassles and get to work If you are a casual researcher and find yourself frustrated with the following issues, this will help you deal with them. These annoyances can make research a chore and waste a lot of your time. This does not need to be the case! – Whole page website translations – Paywall blocks, subscription demands to see full articles – Endless demands to accept cookies – Geo-blocks preventing webpages from opening in your region. – Blocked from copying webpage content & images – Annoying super-long weblinks that contain tracking data All these issues can be fixed with a few free tools, and for the most part do it automatically. Is it legal? If you declare yourself to be a “developer” then yes. No formal registration is required; anyone can decide they are a developer simply by clicking a button in their browser extensions settings, and then proceed to use these free, perfectly legal tools. Here is the setup: – Install Brave browser (use settings shown in images below, click to enlarge) – Install “Linguist” browser extension for Brave (webpage translator, set it to auto translate pages to your preferred language in the extension settings) – Install “Bypass Paywalls Clean” browser extension for Brave (In your extensions settings change the setting, in the top right, to “developer mode”, then follow these instructions, https://gitlab.com/magnolia1234/bypass-paywalls-chrome-clean). Once installed, go to extensions, click Bypass Paywalls Clean “details” button, scroll all the way down, click “extension settings”, and then click the “custom” button (see 3rd pic). If, after a while, this tool quits working, uninstall it and install the latest version. – Install a VPN (I use Windscribe VPN set to the Bosnia/Sarajevo server as it seems to be the best for unblocking geo-restricted websites, Mexico City is another good one. Some sites may require switching to a server located in the website’s country of origin.) – As always, make a Windows restore point before you get started, in case you don’t get this setup working to your satisfaction. – Once you eliminate these problems, you can actually enjoy your researching. You will need to have at least a basic user level: know how to make, save & locate files/folders; know how to download a file and locate it when it’s done; know how to copy/paste; know what browser extensions are; and be familiar with using a VPN. If you don’t understand these terms, it’s above your user level.
TRAVEL NEWS
Spain’s top all-inclusive resort is in Andalucia, and only costs €80/night:{Pre-translated article with corrected info; original translation incorrectly says the resort won best-in-the-world award, which is not the case, just best resort in Spain} – The four star, 349 room Barceló Isla Canela, located in the municipality of Ayamonte in Huelva province, has been voted Spain’s top all-inclusive resort by the World Travel Awards. These awards, now in their 30th year, are considered the most prestigious and comprehensive in the hotel industry. – A night at the Huelva hotel typically costs around 80 euros, although the website often has offers – especially in summer – making it even cheaper. – The first thing a guest will notice about the Barceló Isla Canela is its traditional Andalusian design. It has direct access to the beaches on the coast of Huelva and its proximity to the Algarve in neighbouring Portugal (Vila Real de Santo António, the first Portuguese town just across the border, is just a 20-minute drive) is another draw. – Its gastronomic offer also stands out and is based mainly on local products suggested by renowned chefs Carlos Otaola and José Luis Chaparro. Food is available both in the hotel bar and in its Arrozante Restaurant, which is located in the swimming pool area. – The Barceló Isla Canela also boasts extensive gardens, a spectacular swimming pool, entertainment for adults and children, tennis and padel tennis courts and fantastic golf courses. ANDALUCÍA
‘Calima’ and rain is forecast for the south of Spain, with a big red dust cloud coming from the Sahara desert: – The weather forecast brings some concerning news to the Andalucía region of southern Spain this week. With Easter just around the corner, the next few days will be marked with the arrival of strong ‘calima’ haze of Saharan desert sand from North Africa and the formation of a Dana (high level depression at a high altitude) in the southwest of the Spanish mainland that could bring rain in the middle of the week. Additionally, maximum temperatures will continue to be higher than normal for this time of year, with highs close to 30C. – The major talking point will undoubtedly be the appearance of an episode of calima. «From Monday onwards there will be dust in suspension in Andalucía and the atmosphere will be hazy,» José Miguel Viñas, meteorologist at Meteored, told SUR’s sister newspaper Ideal. However, as the days go by, the situation will not improve but will get worse: «Thursday will be the most important day in terms of the dust haze. I wouldn’t be surprised if it were an episode of a similar intensity to the one we had two years ago,» Viñas added. – On Wednesday there will be a change in the weather in the region due to the formation of a trough in the southwest of the Spanish mainland prior to the formation of the Dana. «There could be stormy showers almost anywhere in Andalucía that day», warned Viñas. However, the weather models indicate that from Thursday onwards the rain and storms will cease. – As far as temperatures are concerned, they will remain at a high of around 30C for practically the whole week. Motorists warned of nighttime carriageway closures on two sections of A-7 on the Costa del Sol: – Motorists have been warned to expect traffic disruption along parts of the Costa del Sol due to road resurfacing and tunnel works on the A-7 motorway which will start tonight at midnight. – Work will start this Monday 18 March, specifically between kilometres 1.450 and 3.600 of the MA-20 Ronda Oeste (Guadalmar and the Parador de Golf), near the Plaza Mayor retail park and a key exit for Malaga Airport. Traffic will be affected in both directions, so drivers are being warned to pay extra attention to signage changes at exits one and three of the busy road. The overnight carriageway closures will be in place from 12 midnight until 7am each day, with work scheduled to finish on 22 March (which marks the start of Easter week). The 1.83-million-euro project will involve strengthening and improving the infrastructure and waterproofing expansion joints on the road surface. – Spain’s Ministry of Transport is also carrying out nighttime works to adapt the emergency exits on the Churriana and San Pedro Alcántara tunnels on the A-7 motorway. The work will cost 3.76 million euros and traffic is expected to be affected between 18 March and 26 June, except during Easter week (22-31 March). – On both carriageways, both in the direction of Cadiz between km 1054.260 and 1055.260, and in the direction of Malaga between km 1055.260 and 1054.260, the left lane will be closed at night, always leaving the right lane free for traffic at all times. ALPUJARRA
La Alpujarra railway, a dream that vanished a century ago: – During the early 20th century a number of projects were drawn up to link Granada city with the coastal town of Motril by railway. The projects also contemplated a line that would go through La Alpujarra via Lanjarón and on to Granada. However, the plans to bring the steam train to the province never materialised. – in 1904 a new railway law raised “new expectations” and a report drawn up by El Defensor de Granada, envisaged three lines: Granada to Motril; Órgiva (on the line from Granada to Motril) to Ugíjar (on the line from Ugíjar to Berja) and Almeria and a line from Baza to Calasparra station on the Chinchilla to Cartagena line. However, in the end none of the proposed lines were built. “Other projects also fell on deaf ears”, says García Valdearenas. – According to the historian from Cádiar (Granada province), “Another project envisaged a main line that started in Torre del Mar in Malaga province and ended in Zurgena in Almeria province, where it would have linked up with the line from Lorca to Baza. – The possibility of the Alpujarra railway was brought up on several occasions, but despite efforts by a number of regional and provincial bodies and a report written in May 1925 by the Granada Chamber of Commerce on the minimum railway needs in the province, which included the construction of a railway from Torre del Mar to Zurgena, no railway was ever built. – In 1926 a meeting took place in Motril, similar to the one held in Cádiar in 1924, but the plans were frustrated. According to García Valdearenas, “If the railway had been built in La Alpujarra, it would have undoubtedly had a great economic and social impact, including a solution to the problems of communication and isolation that the region had been suffering.” Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/andalucia/alpujarra-locomotive-dream-that-vanished-years-ago-20240318113055-nt.html

German Lawmaker In Blistering Ukraine Speech To Parliament: “Have You All Lost Your Minds?”: – Sahra Wagenknecht was long well-known as one of the leading members of the Left Party (Die Linke), but currently she’s head of the recently formed Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance – Reason and Justice. She recently gave a stirring and rare, courageous speech warning against the German government being on the warpath with Russia, also as a handful of European leaders, with France’s Macron leading the way, even contemplating sending Western troops to Ukraine as a viable ‘option’. – “Have you all lost your minds?” she questioned members of the Bundestag. She said in the speech: “The Scholz government has already crossed one red line after the other. In the meantime we reached the point where German Air Force officers calmly debate how to destroy Russian targets with German cruise missiles…” She continued, “The scandal is that we have reached a point where it has become normal to have such debates.” – Wagenknecht went on: “Our grandiose military experts from the Greens have been telling us for two years now what ‘game changer’ we have to deliver next so that Ukraine can win this war.” The hawks “dream” about using German missiles to “destroy ministries in Moscow,” she said. “And when the pope speaks out against this madness, saying that Kiev should negotiate rather than drive the country to suicide, he was called a ‘Putin troll’.” She then emphasized, “The whole world outside the German political bubble knows that Ukraine cannot with this war. For a long time there has been no winning in Ukraine. There has only been.. bloody dying day in and day out. And Taurus missiles won’t change any of that.” Watch the German lawmaker’s speech in German with English subtitles, no account needed: https://twitter.com/Glenn_Diesen/status/1769622619014242701 Full article: https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/german-lawmaker-blistering-ukraine-speech-parliament-have-you-all-lost-your-minds

Board president calls for tourist tax meeting in Andalucia: – President of the Junta de Andalucía Juanma Moreno aims to get local authorities together to discuss the possibility of towns and cities imposing an extra tax on tourists in the region, similar to the one charged in cities as Barcelona. MALAGA PROVINCE
Here’s a job opportunity- 900 bus drivers are needed in Malaga: {Translation} – “We have a brutal lack of personnel”. With unemployment rates like those in the province, these words of Antonio Vázquez Olmedo, president of the employers’ associations Apetam and Fedintra, are striking. If there were trained professionals, up to 900 people would have a job in the province today, to cover the imminent high season. – Although the businessman admits that during the winter season the need for staff is lower, they would still have work to do because the tachographs strictly set the daily driving hours and breaks. “We need to have at least one driver in the morning and one in the afternoon, and the buses often come to a standstill because there is no one to drive them”. The same goes for goods trucks. – The first stumbling block is getting a driving licence, which costs around 3,000 euros and requires at least six months of study. Added to this are the delays in the DGT exams and the difficulty in obtaining the CAP (Certificate of Professional Aptitude), which is compulsory for all professionals who transport passengers and goods. “It is not an easy exam, you have to have an adequate level of knowledge and study”. – Companies are committed to training their staff, but they encounter many obstacles, starting with the minimum age for access to this profession, which is 23 to 24 years old. “At that age, a person already has his or her working life focused, has studied or is doing something else”. Vázquez Olmedo sighs: “Spending 300,000 euros on a bus and not having anyone to drive it is hard”. Volcano in Iceland erupts for the fourth time in three months: – A volcano in Iceland erupted Saturday evening for the fourth time in three months, sending orange jets of lava into the night sky. Iceland’s Meteorological Office said the eruption opened a fissure in the earth about 3 kilometers (almost 2 miles) long between Stóra-Skógfell and Hagafell mountains on the Reykjanes Peninsula. – The Met Office had warned for weeks that magma — semi-molten rock — was accumulating under the ground, making an eruption likely. Hundreds of people were evacuated from the Blue Lagoon thermal spa, one of Iceland’s top tourist attractions, when the eruption began, national broadcaster RUV said.

Father’s Day 2024 in Spain is Tuesday, 19 March & St Paddy’s Day is Sunday 17 March: – In Spain, Father’s Day falls on 19 March instead of the third Sunday of June as in many other countries. The reason for this is to make it coincide with Saint Joseph’s Day, the day that honours Joseph the husband of Mary and the adoptive father of Jesus. He is considered the ultimate example of a good father. – To celebrate, Spaniards usually have a big family dinner to honour their father, grandfathers, and other father-like figures in their life. Lower House of Congress passes the amnesty law and refers it to the Senate: {Translation, summary} – It was the second and final attempt, and Congress has passed the amnesty law. After months of negotiations on the edge of the rupture, and with last-minute agreements, the absolute majority of the Lower House has accepted the text of the rule. – The bill is now on its way to the Senate, where the absolute majority of the PP will try to delay it and still it as much as it can. – PP leader Feijóo has anticipated that the Senate will reject the amnesty law thanks to the PP’s absolute majority, so the law will have to return to Congress for final approval. There is a period of approximately two months for this, but the right wing will try to prolong it as much as possible in the upper house, so it is most likely that the law will not be definitively approved until after the Catalan elections. Junts and ERC warn- after amnesty there must be a referendum because the goal is independence: {Translation, summary} – The Congress of Deputies has approved the Amnesty Law by 178 votes in favour and 172 against. Sánchez’s payment to the Catalan pro-independence supporters for his government has become obvious on Thursday 14 March with the approval of this bill. The crimes of terrorism, high treason and embezzlement will be forgotten, but that is not all, or at least that is what the government’s partners warn. Once again the pro-independence parties claim “our goal remains the independence of our country, of Catalonia, making it clear that amnesty is only a first step on its road to independence.” Source, Spanish: https://okdiario.com/espana/junts-erc-avisan-amnistia-debe-haber-referendum-porque-objetivo-independencia-12529802
ANDALUCÍA
Andalusia awaits a weekend with spring temperatures: {Translation, summary} – On Friday, cloudy skies are expected over most of the region, but as the day progresses, the skies will clear and the day will open up. This will be the case in all Andalusian provinces except those on the Mediterranean coast. Morning mist and fog are likely on the Atlantic coast and on the Mediterranean coast. From Friday 15th March onwards, minimum temperatures will increase and maximum temperatures will also undergo a slight change. – From Saturday onwards, sunny days are expected, although there will be some clouds throughout the region, although they will clear as the day progresses. The thermometers will begin to reflect the fact that spring is just around the corner and the minimum temperatures will show little change, while the maximum temperatures will be more different from previous days as they will rise across the board, with little change on the western Mediterranean coast. The cities that will notice these changes the most are Seville, Huelva and Cordoba, which will record almost the same temperatures, 26ºC, 25ºC and 25ºC, respectively. There will be moderate easterly winds in the Strait of Gibraltar from midday onwards. – On Sunday, these spring-like temperatures will be more evident as 29ºC are expected in Seville, 28ºC in Jaén, Córdoba and Granada and 25ºC in Almería. Compared to the previous day, all Andalusian provinces will see thermometers rise both maximum and minimum temperatures with a rise of between 3 and 4 degrees. It is likely that there will be cloudy skies at the beginning of the day but it will clear up as the day progresses. Winds will be easterly in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean coast, with light variable winds in the rest of the area. MALAGA PROVINCE
These are the 12 municipalities in Malaga where Vodafone will roll out its 5G service this year: – More than seven million people in Andalucía, including both individuals and companies, will be connected by the end of this year to Vodafone’s 5G network on the 700 Mhz frequency. The telecommunications company has announced that 182 municipalities in the region will be connected to its network by the end of 2024. – In Malaga province, another dozen areas will benefit from this high-speed technology and Álora, Archidona, Ardales, Casabermeja, Frigiliana, Fuente de Piedra, Guaro, Mollina, Monda, Ojén, Riogordo and Sierra de Yeguas will all be added to the Vodafone 5G network. These new areas are in addition to 22 deployed last year. – Over the course of this year, more people in the region “will be able to download content five times faster than with the 4G network and enjoy better coverage indoors, as well as lower latency for accessing content,” the company added. – Note: Fiber-optic internet is faster and a higher quality, lower latency connection.-Ed. West Point Ditches “Duty, Honor, Country” From Mission Statement: – The U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York {pic}, will no longer use the motto “Duty, Honor, Country” in its mission statement, according to West Point’s superintendent. The phrase, which was highlighted in a famous speech by Gen. Douglas MacArthur in 1962, will be replaced by a line that includes the words, “Army Values.” – Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth and Army Chief of Staff Randy George both approved the change, which critics may see as West Point going woke. ENERGY CRISIS
The EU confirms the end of natural gas heating in 2040 and the sector warns of the challenge for Spain: {Translation, summary} – The European Parliament approved on Tuesday with 370 votes in favour and 199 against the new Directive on Energy Efficiency of Buildings, which with the ambitious goal of achieving a “climate neutral” housing stock from 2050, will revolutionise new construction in Europe and will force major reforms in the less “efficient” housing. – The regulation, as already published by LD, will impose that the buildings to be built from 2030 onwards be “climate neutral”, an objective that is brought forward to 2028 in the case of public buildings. For existing residential buildings, the EU has set a renovation schedule to use 16% less energy by 2030 and between 20 and 22% less by 2035. Only cultural and historical heritage buildings, temporary buildings and places of worship are exempt from renovation. – As an essential part of this gigantic project, the details of which are left to each country, the EU also sets itself the goal of “decarbonising” heating systems “with a view to completely eliminating fossil fuel boilers by 2040”. Given that “two thirds of the energy used to heat and cool buildings still comes from fossil fuels”, the directive notes the “particular importance” of moving away from natural gas, coal or diesel in “building renovation plans”. The Future Of Train Travel- Startup tests passive maglev (magnetic levatation) tech on regular rail tracks: – Maglev transport systems present an attractive option for the mobility mix. They’re quick and quiet, and are low maintenance. But setup can be costly and complex. Italy’s IronLev is looking to change that with a passive system that runs on regular rail tracks. Instead of using significant amounts of power to run a maglev transport system based around electromagnets, the collaboration has tapped into passive magnetic forces to create a “cushion of air that physically separates the vehicle from the track.” – “Thanks to the features of our technology and to low and speed independent frictions, we can move a 10-ton wagon with the same force that is needed to lift a 22-lb backpack,” claimed company co-founder, Luca Cesaretti. “And we aim at cutting the infrastructure costs tenfold with respect to existing systems.” – The prototype suspended on magnetic skids weighed in at a ton and managed to get up to a self-limited speed of 70 km/h (43.5 mph) thanks to motors at each skid. The team hasn’t revealed any further details on the latest prototype, but stresses that zero modifications were made to the tracks and that no elements were added to the infrastructure. The next step in that process will be building a 20-tonne vehicle and ramping the speed up to 200 km/h (124 mph). The Ides Of March: – You may have heard the phrase “beware the Ides of March,” but what is an Ides and what’s there to fear? The Ides is actually a day that comes about every month, not just in March, according to the ancient Roman calendar, at least. The Romans tracked time much differently than we do now, with months divided into groupings of days counted before certain named days: the Kalends at the beginning of the month, the Ides at the middle, and the Nones between them. In a 31-day month such as March, the Kalends was day 1, with days 2–6 being counted as simply “before the Nones.” The Nones fell on day 7, with days 8–14 “before the Ides” and the 15th as the Ides. Afterward the days were counted as “before the Kalends” of the next month. In shorter months these days were shifted accordingly. – You have probably heard of the Ides of March, however, because it is the day Roman statesman Julius Caesar was assassinated. The immortal words “Beware the Ides of March” are uttered in William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar to the leader by a fortune-teller. Source: https://www.britannica.com/story/what-is-the-ides-of-march

Tit for Tat at the political Clown Show- The PP denounces Sánchez to the Conflict of Interests Office for possible links between the Air Europa bailout and Sánchez’s wife Begoña Gómez, meanwhile Sánchez demands the resignation of the president of Madrid Isabel Díaz Ayuso (PP) for a case that involves her partner: {Translation, summary} – PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo has taken another step in his offensive against the government in the wake of the revelations of the Koldo plot. After an intense control session in Congress, in which President Pedro Sánchez has demanded the resignation of the president of Madrid Isabel Díaz Ayuso (PP) for a case that affects her partner, the Popular Party has been “enabled” to do the same with the wife of the president of the Government. Thus, sources from the national leadership have announced that this Thursday they will register a complaint with the Conflict of Interests Office to “determine the responsibility of the President of the Government for not absenting himself from the Councils of Ministers that took decisions favourable” to Air Europa, which in turn had “economic and professional links with his wife, Begoña Gómez” {pic}. – Feijóo’s PP does not criticize the terms under which the bailout should have been carried out. What they do question is that Sánchez “should have absented himself from the deliberations and votes of the Council of Ministers by virtue of Law 3/2015, of 30 March, regulating the exercise of senior positions in the General State Administration”. Judges, prosecutors, inspectors and lawyers create the Covenant in Defense of the Rule of Law in the face of Sanchez’s attack: {Translation, summary} – They say they cannot remain impassive in the face of the challenge to the rule of law in Spain posed by the Amnesty plans of the socialists. – This Wednesday, 13 March, the latest initiative in defence of the rule of law by key professional associations in safeguarding the Spanish Constitution will be presented at the Faculty of Law of the University of CEU Abad Oliva in Barcelona. Judges, prosecutors, inspectors and lawyers and other legal groups have thus created the Pact in Defence of the Rule of Law in the face of Sánchez’s attack and will launch a manifesto in view of “the need to raise our voices in defence of the Rule of Law”. – The organisations that make up the pact are the majority Association of Prosecutors, the also majority Professional Association of the Judiciary, the Independent Judicial Forum, State Lawyers, State Tax Inspectors, Labour and Social Security Inspectors, Lawyers of the Social Security Administration and the Association of Secretaries, Auditors and Treasurers of the Local Administration. Eight entities that, as they themselves affirm, cannot remain impassive in the face of the challenge to the rule of law that Spain is experiencing. MALAGA CITY
Tensions rise as farmers dump truck loads of lemons on road during latest tractor rally and demonstration in Malaga: – The division between the province’s farmers who feel represented by the agricultural associations, and other farmers who have sided with the 6F platform, the group that organised the initial protests on WhatsApp groups, became evident in Malaga city centre today, Wednesday 13 March. – Around 20 tractors and farm vehicles blocked Paseo de Sancha while a hundred farmers noisily gathered outside the Spanish government delegation’s local office. There was heckling of representatives from the convening agri associations, Asaja, Coag, UPA and Cooperativas Agro-Alimentarias by some of the protestors. – Tension then escalated with the arrival of two pick-up trucks loaded with lemons which were scattered on the road and then thrown at the building. This forced the National Police riot officers to take up positions to protect the entrance. Photos: Salvador Salas/SUR. TORROX
Torrox Town Hall completes work on the municipality’s first mortuary: {Translation, summary} – The Torrox Town Hall has completed work on the first mortuary in the municipality. During a visit to the facilities, the mayor, Óscar Medina, said that the building located on the coast “is the best of its kind in Spain in terms of aesthetics, quality, finish and functionality”. The Torroxeño Consistory, explained Medina, now plans to approve the regulations of the municipal service of the morgue at the beginning of April, after which it will proceed to tender and contract the company that will be in charge of it. The new morgue will also soon be presented to the local residents and it will be possible to visit it, said Óscar Medina. – Óscar Medina has indicated that, prior to the tender, Torrox Town Hall will also have a feasibility study carried out by an external company which will include the specifications for the equipment and furnishings of the mortuary. In his words, “the funeral company that offers the most to the people of Torrox, the one that gives the most to the people of Torrox, will be the one to manage it”. For the mayor, “this is one of the happiest and most beautiful days of my time as mayor, and it is a source of pride to offer this building to the municipality, as Torrox could not be without a morgue any longer”. NERJA
Local and environmental groups reject plans to charge access to popular Nerja nature spot: – The Junta de Andalucía’s initiative to control access and charge people to access the popular Río Chíllar in Nerja has been met with fierce criticism by local residents’ and environmental groups. – SUR published a story last week saying that three companies had submitted bids to take over management of the popular Nerja beauty spot: Hermanos Campano S.L., from Ardales, Viajes Verano Azul S.L., from Nerja and Construcciones Sánchez Domínguez (Sando), from Malaga. A period of public consultation is open until 18 March whereby interested parties may present objections or comments on the three bids. – A petition was started on Tuesday 5 March via Change.org, initiated by a user called Aiden Rodríguez, shortly after the proposals of the three companies bidding for the contract were published. “We are initiating a vote against the proposed management of the Chíllar river, we are being affected by local people and tourists wanting to privatise access to our river. The essence of our community and free access to this natural treasure are at risk,” states the text published on the Change.org website. The PP takes the Koldo case to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Anti-Fraud Office: {Translation, summary} – Throughout Monday, the Partido Popular will formally register its complaint about the Koldo case with the European Public Prosecutor’s Office and the European Anti-Fraud Office. As explained by the Secretary General, Cuca Gamarra, all the information available so far on the alleged corruption scheme that affects “the heart of the PSOE” will be attached so that both bodies can investigate it. – Almost three weeks after the case came to light, the PP promises to go “all the way”. So much so that they will once again dominate the parliamentary agenda this week with all the unknowns that revolve around the plot in the face of the “silence, opacity and counterattack” of Pedro Sánchez’s government, which applies the “policy of self-defence instead of assuming responsibilities”. – Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s number two insisted that “it was not four rogues” who were involved in the alleged plot, but “something structural within the government of Pedro Sánchez”. For this very reason, they will take advantage of the control of the Government that takes place both in Congress and in the Senate to launch again those questions that they consider that the current ministers and senior officials have not wanted to resolve. Yolanda Díaz wants to monitor your working hours in real time: {Translation} – Yolanda Díaz wants restaurants to close earlier. The Minister of Employment seems to care little about what the owner of the premises or their customers think, who are the real authority to decide whether these hours make sense or not. – The priority for the founder of Sumar is that waiters and cooks should be able to enjoy their free time because working after 10 p.m. “affects mental health”, she has declared in recent days. However, following Yolanda Díaz’s ideal, we don’t know where the waiters are going to enjoy themselves when they leave work… because everything would be closed. They will have to go home (where there may be no water until morning). – But Yolanda Díaz has more plans. She also wants businesses not to open on Sundays or public holidays and, very importantly, for all workers in the country to work less than 40 hours a week for the same pay. Why should we take into account the productivity of a company if we can intervene by law? Specifically, Yolanda Díaz wants the maximum number of hours to be worked this year to be 38.5 hours a week, and by 2025, for the law to reduce it to 37.5 hours. This is yet another cost overrun for companies to add to the long list of outrages that the government is inflicting on them. – And how is the Ministry of Labour going to ensure that its costly idea is implemented? Well, by intensifying the control of working hours, the tool that the government imposed a few years ago to control overtime and which has not been very successful. Yolanda Díaz’s new idea is that her inspectors will be able to remotely access the companies’ time recording system to find out in real time how many hours are being worked. In other words, we are looking at the absolute control of the company and the workers. The Big Brother of working hours is about to begin. The DGT will monitor the correct use of seat belts and child seats this week: {Translation, summary} – The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) will reinforce surveillance on the correct use of seat belts and child restraint systems, known as child seats, from this Monday until Sunday on all types of roads. – It is a special campaign, in which Guardia Civil traffic officers, regional and local police will participate and supervision will be intensified from the air and through the 245 cameras placed both on conventional roads and on high occupancy roads, according to the DGT on Monday. – This campaign is in addition to that organised by RoadPol (European Road Policing Network), which seeks to highlight the importance of these systems within the European Union. – The DGT has warned that there are still “a significant number of drivers and occupants” who do not use restraint systems or use them incorrectly, despite the fact that it has been scientifically proven to be the most effective measure for protecting vehicle occupants in the event of an accident. In the case of child restraint systems, which are more complex to use than seat belts, there is “a high prevalence of incorrect use or use of systems that are not appropriate for the size of the child”. MALAGA PROVINCE
Malaga’s reservoirs now have more than 100 cubic hectometres of water: {Translation, summary} – The reservoirs have now surpassed the 100 cubic hectometre mark. The latest rains have increased the amount of water in the reservoirs of Malaga after months of decline. The storm of recent days has reactivated streams that were dry and has caused, as happened this Saturday, tributaries such as the river Turón in Estepona to overflow. – The contributions from the rainfall have mainly reached La Viñuela, which in the last week has gained 1.92 hectometres (other sources say it gained 2.24 cubic hectometers) and is now at 9% capacity, while in the case of La Concepción, which supplies the Costa del Sol, there has been a gain of 2.05 hectometres. The Conde del Guadalhorce reservoir has also received an increase in water over the last seven days, rising from 12.31 cubic hectometres of water registered last Sunday to the 13.97 hectometres recorded by the Hidrosur network this day. – At the other extreme are the reservoirs that have lowered their level. Fortunately, only one in the province of Malaga. The Limonero reservoir, which is currently at 22.34 of its full level. ALGARROBO
Algarrobo will celebrate Dog Day with an exhibition of the Rescue Fire Unit that participated in the Moroccan earthquake: {Translation} – The Deputy Mayor of Algarrobo Costa, Francisco Marín, this morning presented the activities planned for Dog Day. This is a new day in the municipality which has been organised by the Mayor’s Office together with Doggie Land. – “There are many neighbours and visitors who are dog lovers and during this day they will have the opportunity to introduce their pets, find out about their care and enjoy the exhibitions we have prepared,” said the deputy mayor. – The day will take place on the 17th of March on Av. Torre Ladeada next to the Tarta in Algarrobo Costa. It will start at 13:00 hours with a canine competition with different categories: Best Male, Best Female, Best Puppy, and a children’s competition where children can present their pets. Those interested in taking part can register on the same day from 11:00 a.m. at the venue for a donation of one euro. – The highlight of the day will be from 13:30 hours with an exhibition of the Fire Rescue Unit of Malaga (GERCCMA), specialised in rescuing people with the Arcón Method. “This is the unit that helped in the last earthquake in Morocco and they are going to carry out a simulation of a spectacular rescue that we will be able to experience live and direct, so I encourage you all not to miss it because it will leave you speechless”. – From 16:00 hours there will be an exhibition of dogs with great skills so that we can see how far a good training can go with Funny Dogs. At 17:00 there will be the award ceremony for the Best Dog in all categories. “All the winners will receive fantastic prizes for their pets,” said Marín. – Axarquía Animal Rescue will set up a stand during the event to raise funds for the care of abandoned animals and to inform those interested in adopting dogs and cats. – The day will be entertained by the band Duo Golden Cuba and a large food and drink stall. Part of the proceeds will be donated to an animal shelter. MIJAS
Weekend storm and waves take big chunk out of popular Costa del Sol beach: – Mijas town hall had been predicting what could happen given the dynamics of the sea currents and storms of the last few days. And in the hours of late Friday to early Saturday its fears were confirmed: the sea has taken a big ‘bite’ out of El Bombo beach leaving a steep step, damaging the Nacho beach bar and beach infrastructure. Early on Saturday morning, the mayor, Ana Mata, shared images on her X social media profile , demanding solutions for the Mijas coastline from the Costas beach authority. – At the scene of the damage, the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez, told SUR that last week the council requested permission to dump 13,000 cubic metres of sand in the area, which had already been depleted. “We were refused permission, saying that analyses had to be carried out first. And now it is no longer 13,000 that is needed, but 200,000”, he added. Portugal’s conservatives win election as far-right surges: – Portugal’s centre-right Democratic Alliance (AD) won Sunday’s general election, though it was unclear if they could govern without the support from far-right Chega, with whom they again refused to negotiate. – Chega’s parliamentary representation more than quadrupled to at least 48 lawmakers in the 230-seat legislature, giving the combined right a majority. The result underscores a political tilt to the far right across Europe. Portugal, which only returned to democracy after the fall of a fascist dictatorship 50 years ago, had long been considered immune to the rise of right-wing populism across the continent, which is expected to result in gains for far-right parties in European elections in June. Chinese Government Documents Reveal Detailed Plan to Subvert American Culture Using Tech and Hollywood to Target American Children: – Chinese government documents and restricted military journals show how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is using social media like TikTok and Hollywood to target vulnerable young consumers and tear at the fabric of American culture, according to Peter Schweizer’s new book: Blood Money: Why the Powerful Turn a Blind Eye While China Kills Americans. Blood Money landed at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list this week, just one week after its release by publisher HarperCollins. – “The Chinese military and Communist Party officials have thought deeply and written extensively about waging ‘cognitive warfare’ on the United States. The CCP sees apps such as TikTok, video games, and movies as powerful weapons to wage psychological warfare against the West,” Schweizer writes. “…Unfortunately, they have found willing accomplices among some of the most powerful people in American politics and entertainment. Those national leaders continue to turn a blind eye to the challenge, refusing to acknowledge what Beijing is doing.” – TikTok is run by the company ByteDance, which is “wedded to the Chinese Communist Party military-intelligence-industrial complex,” he writes. While the app has “penetrated the heart of America’s culture, becoming a central part of the lives of our children and young adults,” the Chinese government does not permit access of the app for its own population (offering instead a censored version . Instead, the CCP harnesses the app’s addictive quality to target and shape the minds of young Americans for its own purposes, all while designating TikTok’s powerful algorithm as a top secret “national security asset.” Full article: https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2024/03/09/blood-money-chinese-government-documents-reveal-detailed-plan-to-subvert-american-culture-using-tech-and-hollywood-to-target-children/

Internet Update- New EU Regulations: {DigameXtra} – If you have experienced problems while on the internet in the past few weeks, you are not alone. The Big-Tech giants have been scrambling to comply with new EU internet and data regulations, causing a myriad of issues: some websites won’t load correctly, major search engines like Google and DuckDuckGo are returning poor quality search results, some videos won’t play, etc. In some cases using a different browser or VPN may help, however, even the VPNs are having problems as they adapt to the new changes. If you use a VPN, and encounter a block on a website you could previously access, try turning off the ad-blocker functions in the VPN’s settings. – Additionally, local internet providers (ISP) have had to add new piracy filters as La Liga, supported by recent court victories, begins a very aggressive campaign against live football stream (iptv) piracy. These new filters have apparently been set to err on the side of the regulators, resulting in some legit content getting blocked. – These problems will progressively minimize over the next few months as the lawyers & techies work out the bugs. However, some websites, particularly US news websites, will now be blocking EU located ISP addresses by default. A VPN using an EU based server will also be blocked, choose your server location accordingly.

15,000+ protesters in Madrid against the existential threat of amnesty and Pedro Sánchez: {Translation, summary} – Although the slogan stated that “there are plenty of reasons” to demand the resignation of Pedro Sánchez, it was the amnesty for the politicians of the Catalan procés that was the focus of the speeches at the rally held this afternoon in Madrid’s Plaza de Cibeles against the president of the government. Convened by a hundred associations nominally unconnected to political parties, the immediate surroundings of the stage were, however, filled with several veterans of the Spanish right, with Alejo Vidal-Quadras playing the starring role. – The Vox founder, former PP member and survivor of a recent assassination attempt argued that the Spanish nation faces an “existential threat”, referring to the amnesty. – The call brought together 15,000 people, according to the Government Delegation. Endesa still does not solve the delays in its bills, repeats the illegal practices for which it was fined €600k in 2021: {Translation} – Endesa, one of the country’s leading electricity companies, is once again at the centre of controversy due to its failure to effectively address delays in issuing bills to its customers. Despite repeated complaints expressed through social networks, many users continue to face disproportionate waits, in some cases up to a year. – Consumer discontent is not a new phenomenon. In the past, specifically in 2022, the company was fined 600,000 euros by the Generalitat de Catalunya due to similar delays that affected a wide range of customers during 2021. In a statement, Endesa has tried in the past to explain these delays by pointing to “a change in the billing system and regulatory adjustments”. In addition, they assured that they are working to offer those affected by the accumulation of outstanding bills “a payment agreement that meets their particular needs”. However, so far, problems persist. This argument is reminiscent of the one used in 2021 when the company faced criticism for a similar situation, citing a “profound modification” due to the implementation of a new billing system. – Despite these explanations, the reality is that current legislation dictates that bills must be issued within five days of the meter reading, making the current delays notable for non-compliance. This mismatch between the regulations and Endesa’s practice has intensified frustration and discontent among its customer base, which has not hesitated to express itself on different internet platforms against the company. Ireland Voters Reject Two Woke Referendums: – Irish voters have rejected proposals to replace constitutional references to the makeup of a family and a mother’s “duties in the home” in a significant defeat for the government. Prime Minister Leo Varadkar had pitched the vote, held on Friday to coincide with International Women’s Day and counted on Saturday, as a chance to delete some “very old-fashioned, very sexist language about women”. – A proposal to expand the definition of family from a relationship founded on marriage to include other durable relationships was rejected by 67.7% to 32.3%. A second referendum on a proposal to replace language surrounding a woman’s duties in the home with a clause recognising the role of family members in the provision of care was rejected by 73.9% to 26.1%. Apple Updates- “Update Now” Warning Issued To All iPhone Users: – Apple has issued iOS 17.4, along with a warning to update now. That’s because iOS 17.4 fixes at least four security issues, two of which are already being used in real life attacks. Apple doesn’t give many details about what’s fixed in iOS 17.4, to ensure as many iPhone users as possible can update before attackers get hold of the details. Apple’s iOS 17.4 comes with a huge change for EU users as it opens up iPhones to ‘sideloading’ (installing apps from third party suppliers outside the App Store). – Alongside iOS 17.4 and iOS 16.7.6, Apple has also released iOS 15.8.2 and iPadOS 15.8.2 for the iPhone 6s (all models), iPhone 7 (all models), iPhone SE (1st generation), iPad Air 2, iPad mini (4th generation), and iPod touch (7th generation). – Also, if your iPhone can run iOS 17, you need to upgrade to the latest software version, iOS 17.4. Apple no longer supports iOS 16 for devices later than the iPhone X, so if you don’t upgrade, you are leaving yourself open to attack. – Also on March 7, Apple issued Safari 17.4 for its browser, as well as macOS Sonoma 14.4, macOS Ventura 13.6.5, macOS Monterey 12.7.4, watchOS 10.4, tvOS 17.4 and visionOS 1.1 for its Apple Vision Pro. – The macOS, watchOS, tvOS and visionOS updates include the already-exploited issues in the Kernel and RTKit, so it makes sense to treat these as urgent and update your devices as soon as possible. – So, what are you waiting for? Go to your iPhone’s Settings > General > Software Update and download and install iOS 17.4 as soon as possible. Sideloading apps on iPhone after iOS 17.4- What we know so far- EU regulators finally get something right: – Apple has now allowed users in the European Union (EU) to sideload apps on iPhones specifically in compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The feature is currently available only to users in the 27 EU countries. The latest iOS 17.4 version allows users to install third-party apps from sources outside the App Store. While Apple has officially permitted this, the tech giant discourages sideloading due to security concerns. – It is worth noting that Apple’s stance on sideloading remains unconfirmed. The latest decision is primarily driven by legal obligations. The expansion of the same functionality to other regions is uncertain at this time. – Apple has not provided any official instructions on how to sideload apps on iPhone with the iOS 17.4 update. Here’s the likely upcoming process: *Limited Sideloading: Apple might add a setting that will permit the installation of apps from sources other than the App Store. Users can toggle the option on or off based on their preferences. *Downloading APK: The tech giant might allow users to download the APK file (usually in the .ipa format) and let them install it on the iPhone after the iOS 17.4 update, just like Android smartphones. *Third-party stores: We might see the App Store alternatives offering compatible iOS apps. Users will be able to install the required app directly from these stores. It is worth noting that these are just possible scenarios, and we should wait for the official update in this regard. – You might wonder about using a VPN to install third-party apps on iPhones. However, you should note that Apple has specifically stated that a person outside the EU can’t use a VPN to sideload apps. According to Apple, users must meet several requirements to sideload apps on iPhones, including verifying their Apple ID’s billing address, confirming their current location, and adjusting their iOS settings accordingly. – While Apple has allowed sideloading of the apps, you should be extremely cautious and only download apps from trusted sources that boast strong security. Amnesty clears the first step- the PSOE and its partners approve the unlocking of the amnesty: {Translation, summary} – The amnesty law resumes its parliamentary process after a sharp brake that has lasted just over a month and has, at times, threatened to torpedo both the adoption of the rule and the legislature itself. This Thursday, Congressional Justice Committee gave the green light to changes to the rule agreed by PSOE, ERC and Junts at the behest of the latter party, and did so with the votes in favor, in addition to those three formations, of Sumar, PNV, EH Bildu and Podemos, while PP and Vox opposed it. The bill, with these amendments, will be debated and voted on next Thursday in Congress and then will pass to the Senate, where it will face the last stage of its parliamentary process. – The PP’s criticisms, however, were not limited to the way in which the compromise amendment debated on Thursday was presented, copies delivered just minutes before the session began, but focused on its content. PP spokeswoman Gamarra began her very harsh statements by asserting that, while normally governments in a democracy “seek to strengthen” the state, what Pedro Sánchez’s government is doing is laying down “a red carpet for impunity”. “They are unprotecting the state so that [the pro-independence supporters] can commit the crimes again, but now with impunity,” warned the PP spokeswoman, who described the amnesty as an “unjust, immoral and unconstitutional law”. – “We are facing a corrupt law that is the payment, the transaction, that you have to make to stay in power: what we are talking about is the ambition of a man who wants to stay in power at any price”, Gamarra also said in reference to the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez. And the PP spokeswoman did not miss the opportunity to also refer to the Koldo case, which has been surrounding the Executive for some weeks, assuring that the “power” that the PSOE currently enjoys “is inextricably linked to corruption”: both economic, due to the scandal of the masks, and political, because the amnesty means “creating a political caste, a private preserve in which certain politicians can roam without submitting to the law and the courts”. ANDALUCÍA
The weather in Andalusia- these are the areas where it is likely to rain the most: {Translation, summary} – Thursday 7 March will be the turning point that will give way to days of continuous rain in most of Spain, including Andalusia. Precipitation (both in the form of rain and snow in some parts of the region) and thunderstorms are expected at least until Monday 11 March. – Friday 8th will begin with showers and thunderstorms in the north of the province of Cordoba, in Jerez de la Frontera and in the province of Jaén. Throughout the morning, rainfall will also reach Granada, the north of the provinces of Seville and Cordoba, the south of the province of Cadiz and Malaga. From midday, showers and thunderstorms are expected in the provinces of Cordoba and Jaen, as well as in the east of Seville and the south of Cadiz and Malaga municipalities such as Marbella. – The rains will continue on Saturday 9 March. On this day, rain is expected throughout Andalusia from 00:00 hours, extending through the night until at least the afternoon, when rainfall is expected to cease in the east of Almeria and the western coast of Huelva. From midday, the AEMET predicts thunderstorms over much of Andalusia, the exceptions being in the provinces of Cadiz, Malaga, and east of Granada. – On Sunday it will rain again in most of the region, with the exception of the province of Almería. On this day storms are also expected in the north of Huelva, Seville and Malaga and in practically the whole of the provinces of Cordoba, Jaen and Granada at different points during the day. On Sunday a yellow alert for wind will also be activated along the entire Andalusian coastline. MALAGA PROVINCE
Malaga needs to triple quantity of water in its reservoirs across the province to overcome current drought crisis: – The head of Spain’s state weather agency in the area, Jesús Riesco, has warned, “we are now entering a period in which it is highly improbable that the drought situation can be ended by the summer”. – In the Axarquía, the hydrological mathematics are very worrying. The large reservoir at La Viñuela now stores 13.4hm³, according to data from the Hidrosur network on Tuesday. To get out of the severe drought situation, the reservoir would have to more than triple its water and exceed the threshold of 41.5 hm³. – The margin between now and summer is practically non-existent. “From October to February, the good months have passed. March is still a favourable time but we are now entering a period in which it is highly improbable that the drought can be ended by the summer,” the weather expert said. – The Junta de Andalucía regional government, through the regional ministry of Agriculture, has put out to tender a contract valued at almost 3.5 million euros for the coordination, monitoring and review of the Hydrological Plans and the Drought Plans. The development of the plan is for four years, so administratively there is little confidence in overcoming the current situation in less than four years. This was the case during the 2005 drought, the official settlement of which took place on 5 February 2009, when Malaga and the Guadalhorce exceeded the threshold of 160 cubic hectometres set at the time. Uncertainty about filling pools in Malaga drives up the price of the water delivered by truck: {Translation, summary} – The College of Farm Managers (CAF) insists on the need to clarify the municipal and regional regulatory tangle and estimates that each pool must be filled at least twice a season due to splash and evaporation. – On Wednesday CAF received an invoice where the price of tanker truck delivered water has increased 171% in just 7 days. Farmer’s Denounce Lack Of Progress- The Malaga countryside once again takes to the streets to prevent its demands from being forgotten: {Translation, summary} – On Wednesday, 13 March, these protests will return to the capital. This time, with a demonstration in front of the Subdelegación del Gobierno, on Paseo de Sancha. The intention is to occupy both lanes of traffic. These demonstrations are also planned from 10:00 to 13:00. Both protests have the authorisation of the Subdelegación del Gobierno. – The rift between the agricultural associations and the Ministry of Agriculture is widening. The first government proposals to put an end to the mobilisations have left the representatives of Asaja, Coag, UPA and Cooperativas Agro-Alimentarias baffled. Baldomero Bellido is the president of Asaja in Malaga, the organisation with the most members in the province. “We are a long way from reaching an agreement,” he told this newspaper in a telephone conversation on Wednesday. It is an assessment that is no different from those made by the other associations. The changes they are calling for should come as a matter of urgency. But negotiations are at a standstill. Bellido admits that farmers and stockbreeders are beginning to feel “tired” after a month of protests and demonstrations. “There is no choice but to tighten up, now is the time,” he adds. To this end, a new calendar of protests has been drawn up in the province, which begins today and will continue on 13 March, with a large rally in front of the Government Subdelegation building in Malaga. MALAGA CITY
Rent Control- These are the municipalities of Malaga that meet the characteristics of the stressed rental areas where rent controls could be implemented: {Translation, summary} – The purpose of declaring the zones as rent-controlled is to set limits on rental prices. With regard to the characteristics indicated by the government, to be considered as a stressed rental zone, they are the following: *If the rental price is more than 30% of the average income or average household income in the area. {Example: If a neighborhood’s households have an average income of €20,000 annual, or €1667 per month, thirty percent of that is €500. So if the majority of the properties in that area have rents higher than €500/mo, then it would meet this test to be classified a stressed rental area, and be eligible to apply for rent controls. -Ed.} *If the rental price of housing in these areas has increased by 3 percentage points above the CPI in the previous five years in the autonomous community in which it is located. – In the case of the province of Malaga, there are several municipalities that meet these characteristics. MalagaHoy has made an analysis. Selecting an advert from each of the districts of the city, to find the average price of those offered on a well-known real estate portal, and has made an average of how much it exceeds the average of the range proposed by the Ministry for that flat. The results would indicate a reduction of 500 euros in the price of rent of an average property in the city. – The list of municipalities in Malaga that have been identified so far as meeting the Government’s criteria, but have yet to apply for rent controls, are as follows: Benahavís, Marbella, Estepona, Torremolinos, Mijas, Fuengirola, Benalmádena, Alhaurín de la Torre, Manilva, & Alhaurín el Grande. TORRE DEL MAR
Body of 44-year-old man found in park: – A man’s body has been found in a park in Torre del Mar, on the eastern strip of the Costa del Sol, early this Thursday morning (7 March). National Police officers have launched an investigation into the 44-year-old’s death after the discovery in the Islas del Sol gardens at about 4am. – The corpse has been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) in Malaga where forensic experts will now carry out an autopsy. According to sources, initial investigations point towards to a natural death, however, investigators are awaiting the results of the autopsy to confirm this. Transnistria- Will Russia’s next war be in Moldova?: – On Wednesday, a “congress of deputies of all levels” convened in Tiraspol, Transnistria’s nominal capital, and passed a resolution to ask Russia for protection in the face of “increasing pressure” and the “economic war” unleashed by Moldova. Vadim Krasnoselsky, the “president” of Transnistria and Sheriff’s former head of security, accused the authorities in Chisinau of “genocide” against the people of Transnistria {pic}. – But what led up to the appeal this time around? Since January 1, companies in Transnistria have had to pay customs duties when exporting goods to Moldova proper. It is part of a catalog of measures the government in Chisinau is applying in an attempt to gain more control over Transnistria. Sandwiched between Ukraine and Moldova, Transnistria has been an uncontrolled hub for illegal trade, smuggling and money laundering for the past 30 years. – Moldova’s pro-Western head of state, Maia Sandu, who was a civil rights, anti-corruption activist before being elected president, has made every effort since coming to power in 2020 to stop illegal economic dealings with Transnistria. A presidential election and a referendum on the country’s accession to the EU are due to be held this fall. According to Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi, the authorities are “already seeing attempts to destabilize the situation” in the country. Cancer-causing chemical found in Clinique, Clearasil acne treatments and more, U.S. lab reports: – High levels of cancer-causing chemical benzene were detected in some acne treatments from brands including Estee Lauder’s Clinique, Target’s Up & Up and Reckitt Benckiser-owned Clearasil, said independent U.S. laboratory Valisure. Benzene was also detected in Proactiv, PanOxyl and Equate Beauty acne cream among others. Benzene could form at “unacceptably high levels” in both prescription and over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide acne treatment products, Valisure said. – Valisure’s tests showed some products could form more than 800 times the conditionally restricted FDA concentration limit for benzene. Tennis News- Nadal withdraws from Indian Wells, ‘not ready’ to compete at highest level: – Rafa Nadal withdrew from Indian Wells on Wednesday on the eve of his first-round match, saying he is not “ready to play at the highest level”. The 37-year-old Spaniard, who has said he expects to retire after the 2024 season, returned to competition in Brisbane in January after almost a year sidelined with a hip flexor injury, but had to miss the Australian Open with another muscle tear. – He lost to Carlos Alcaraz in an exhibition event in Las Vegas last Sunday and appeared ready to compete for a fourth title in the California desert. – “It is with great sadness that I have to withdraw from this amazing tournament,” the 22-times Grand Slam champion said in a statement. – Nadal will now turn his attention to his favourite surface clay with an eye toward a record-extending 15th French Open title and a second Olympic gold medal at the Paris Games, where tennis will be contested at Roland Garros. Sánchez again bows to the blackmailing Junts, accepts more changes to the amnesty law to shield Puigdemont from his terrorism investigation: {Translation, summary} – The PSOE assured only two days ago that there would be no changes to the rule. – The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has finally ceded to the demands of Junts and has accepted changes to the amnesty law to offer more guarantees to Carles Puigdemont. This was advanced by the leader of the Executive in an informal conversation with journalists covering his visit to Brazil, reports EFE. – Sánchez is convinced that the amnesty law as it is now benefits all those linked to the ‘process’ including Carles Puigdemont, but agrees to modify in part the text, which he assures which will remain fully constitutional to give even more guarantees in the face of Junts’ doubts. All this despite the fact that the PSOE was assured only two days ago, and this has been doing in the last month, that they would not accept any more changes. According to councillor José Manuel Fernández, who proposed the motion, there has been a “constant rise” in burglaries in recent months. – Fernández said in the statement that Torrox’s Guardia Civil “lacks the necessary officers to properly ensure the safety of our municipality and the neighbouring towns of Algarrobo and Sayalonga”. The ‘Phoenician Route on the Axarquia Coast’, a new cultural initiative by the Town Councils of Velez-Malaga and Algarrobo: {Translation, summary} – Today we present a new cultural activity that combines history and knowledge. The Axarquia coast, more specifically in the municipalities of Velez-Malaga and Algarrobo, brought together during the 9th and 7th centuries B.C. the largest population concentration of the Phoenician colonial process in the whole Iberian Peninsula. – The ambitious ‘Phoenician Route in the Axarquia Coast’, a journey through the cultural and historical Phoenician past in our land will start on March 16th, visiting the places where there were Phoenician settlements in the Axarquia region, specifically in the municipalities of Vélez-Málaga and Algarrobo. – The activity will take place on the 16th of March and will be repeated during the rest of the year on future dates yet to be confirmed. – “The route aims to show society the rich legacy of the Phoenician and Punic period preserved in our territory. The visit will begin at the Museum of Vélez-Málaga (MVVEL) (9.00 a.m.), where the Phoenician occupation in the Bay of Vélez is narrated and where you can learn about their material culture. EU food safety alert issued after Hepatitis A detected in strawberries imported into Spain from Morocco, faecal contaminated irrigation water suspected: – The Valencian association of farmers (AVA-ASAJA) in Spain has expressed its “concern” and demanded “urgent measures” to central Government and the European Union after a notification was issued on Monday, 4 March, on the EU’s RASFF (Rapid Alert System Feed and Food) portal that warns of the “presence of Hepatitis A in strawberries from Morocco” detected at an entry point of Spain. – According to the notification, the risk classification is “serious” because it exceeds the “maximum permitted level of absence/25g” of this substance which AVA-ASAJA stresses “poses a danger to public health and which may have appeared in the food due to the irrigation of farms with faecal water”. Did You Trade An Iris Scan For Worldcoin Cryptocurrency?: {Translation, summary} – This program was active in shopping malls in Malaga {pic}. – The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) has ordered Worldcoin to stop immediately the collection of personal data in Spanish territory and to block all those it has collected so far. This project, promoted by Sam Altman, executive director of OpenAI (the laboratory that ChatGPT has developed) aims to scan the iris of the entire world population to create a digital passport of humanity that serves to differentiate people from artificial intelligence on the Internet. In exchange for that identification, the company offers a reward in cryptocurrencies. – The project rewards volunteers with 25 worldcoins for signing up. Until Wednesday, that figure is equivalent to about 150 euros, which many teenagers (the minimum age for being a member of Worldcoin is 18 years, says the company) consider a fair price for their iris scan. – The Spanish privacy regulator informed Worldcoin on Monday of its decision and gave them 72 hours to stop the processing of the data. This blockade will remain active for the duration of the investigation of the “important risks” involved in the project. Spain has justified this urgent action around the activities of the Worldcoin and the great attraction it is arousing among young people, who in recent weeks have queued in front of the scanning points to exchange their iris for the cryptocurrency of the project. Hitting piracy- first sentence against a pirate IPTV company in Spain, Engel Systems SL : – The Provincial Court of Pontevedra has made a historic ruling by convicting the company Engel Systems S.L. and its directors of a crime against intellectual property for the sale of decoders to pirate content. The extraordinary thing about the ruling is that it is the first time in Spain that a company has been convicted of selling pirate IPTV services, as, until now, the weight of the law had fallen solely on private individuals, legal sources told EL MUNDO. – The conviction affects seven of the company’s employees, including its directors, who have received fines ranging from 540 euros to 7,290 euros depending on their degree of importance in the operations, and the company Engel, fined 673,000 euros and 397 dollars for civil liability arising from the crime. Much Stronger Than Fentanyl, Nitazene Presents A Looming Crisis: – A new killer has emerged in the illegal drug market, leaving a trail of bodies in its wake. Synthetic opioids called nitazenes, up to 20 times more potent than fentanyl, have infiltrated street drugs from heroin to benzodiazepines, catching unsuspecting users in a web of addiction and overdose (OD) death. – Nitazenes belong to a class of synthetic opioids called isotonitazenes, or ISOs. These compounds have gained attention due to their powerful painkilling properties. First developed in the 1950s, nitazenes were never approved for medical use and long remained obscure, known only in academic circles. – A defining trait of nitazenes is their extremely high potency, hundreds to thousands of times more potent than morphine and other older opioids and 10 to 20 times more powerful than fentanyl, which is already fueling the nation’s current drug crisis. – Although it’s theorized that these compounds are coming from China, “nobody really knows for sure,” Dr. Jarid Pachter from Stony Brook Medicine, who specializes in family medicine and addiction medicine, told The Epoch Times. So far, 20 distinct types of nitazenes have been detected in illegal street drugs, turning up with increasing frequency. – Data from Scotland’s Rapid Action Drug Alerts and Response (RADAR) early warning system showed nitazenes directly caused 25 deaths between 2022 and 2023, compared to none before, identified in postmortem toxicology tests. – “Because nitazenes have been found in various street drugs like benzodiazepines and fake pharmaceuticals, people may not be aware they are taking nitazenes or the increased risk,” Dr. Tara Shivaji, a consultant in public health medicine at Public Health Scotland, said in a press statement. Compounding the risk, the concentration of drugs in tablets, powders, and blotters can fluctuate dramatically even within the same batch, she noted.

Reservoirs increase their reserve by another 2% thanks to the rains, but those in Andalusia and Catalonia remain at worrying levels: {Translation, summary} – The reservoirs continue to rise for the fourth consecutive week. The rains, which this week have been particularly heavy in some parts of the Peninsula due to the passage of several fronts, have meant that the water reserve has experienced a further increase, almost 2%, and that overall the reservoirs are now at almost 55% of their capacity. Despite these results, the Catalan and Andalusian basins continue to show worrying figures. – Even if the southern basins manage to climb too, the truth is that they continue to present much lower data compared to those in the north. Among them, Guadalete-Barbate stands out, which is this week at 17.3%. It is followed by the Segura basin, 18.9%; Mediterranean Andalusian, 19.4%; Guadalquivir, 25.9% and Guadiana, 36.9%. VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA
Tough Choices For Progressive & Conservative Landlords- While both left-wing PSOE and right-wing PP have facilitated the relaxation of squatter laws & enforcement, far-right VOX works at community levels for landlord rights & swift evictions: {Translation, summary} – VOX denounces in Vélez-Málaga the “inaction” of PP and PSOE regarding squatter problems. – In an appearance before the media this morning, the national deputy of VOX for Malaga, Patricia Rueda, accompanied by the also deputy Carlos Hernández Quero and the spokesperson of VOX in Vélez-Málaga, Javier Herreros, has addressed “the growing problem of squatting that affects Vélez-Málaga and, by extension, all of Spain”. A problem, he stressed, that “affects the working classes while the Executive persists in paving the way for criminals”. – In the words of Patricia Rueda, “squatting is a problem of great concern to the residents of Vélez-Málaga and to citizens throughout Spain”. In this sense, she underlined “the injustice it represents for those who struggle to pay their mortgages while the current laws protect squatters to the detriment of legitimate owners”. – Further, the VOX deputy has highlighted that her party has brought to the municipal plenary, in Vélez-Málaga, a motion requesting “specific measures to combat this problem”, including “the creation of a technical-legal office and a police unit specialised in the fight against squatting”. This includes, as Rueda explained, “the growing problem of “inquiokupación”. {Inquiokupación occurs when a person signs a rental contract, but after the first or second payment, they quit paying rent. However, the property is not abandoned, going from being rented to squatted (okupa). This situation became a major issue when evictions for failure to pay rent during the Covid restriction times were prohibited. Some renters who stopped rent payments at that time continue to occupy properties without resuming rent payments. -Ed.} These actions, explained the VOX deputy, “seek to address the consequences of squatting, such as insecurity, conflicts and dirtiness that deteriorate the quality of life in neighbourhoods, and that threaten private property and that right”. – Rueda, likewise, contradicted the latest gov’t claims of a down-trend in squatting, and criticised the current Spanish government, indicating that “since Sánchez has been in the Moncloa (Spain’s White House), supported by communists and the enemies of the nation, there has been a 41% increase in cases of squatting”. She also wanted to highlight the role of the PP in the “modification of the Penal Code in 2015, which lowered the category of this crime from serious to minor”. This is why, from Congress, Rueda explained, “we have presented dozens of initiatives, including a bill and even appeals to the High Court”. – Patricia Rueda concluded her speech by stressing that, from VOX, they are clear: “To the squatter, a kick in the ass”, expressing the commitment of her party to continue its “fight against squatting from all institutions”, putting the focus on the “real problems of the citizens of Vélez-Málaga and all of Spain”; as well as the proposal of “common sense measures against the inaction of conservatives and socialists who are only able to agree to share the seats in the Congress Commissions”. RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA
Rincon de la Victoria will have a mobile breast cancer detection unit until 19 June: {Translation} – Women residents in Rincón de la Victoria, Macharaviaya, Moclinejo and Totalán, aged between 50 and 71, will be scheduled for a check-up. – The Malaga Health District has added a mobile unit for the Breast Cancer Early Detection Programme to the two fixed units it already had, located in the Puerta Blanca and La Roca health centres. This unit will travel to the municipalities and areas furthest away from the existing fixed units. Its current destination is Rincón de la Victoria, where it will be in the Plaza de la Constitución until 19th June. – The Early Diagnosis of Breast Cancer Programme of the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs of the Andalusian Regional Government invites women between the ages of 50 and 71 to have a mammogram every 2 years. Therefore, women living in Rincón de la Victoria, Macharaviaya, Moclinejo, Olías and Totalán, and who are in the corresponding age bracket, are encouraged to check that they have received their appointment and to participate. Participants are summoned by letter to attend a mammography screening unit. The results of the screening are also sent to their home address by post. If it is necessary to complete the study with other complementary tests, the woman will be referred to her hospital of reference, and will also receive this appointment by post. – If they wish to ask any questions, change the appointment received or request it again (if for any reason they have not been able to attend before), they can do so by calling 677007017 or emailing info@cribadoandalucia.com. SEVILLA
Rent Control- The new housing index certifies the price of flat rents in Seville should be up to 500 euros less than asked: {Translation, summary} – The Ministry of Housing published this week a new online benchmark tool with which any user can consult a price range of how much you should be paying for the rent of your home. https://serpavi.mivau.gob.es/ – Despite the fact that the Andalusian region has yet to initiate any procedures in this regard, some neighborhoods in Sevilla are expected to participate in rent controls. A simple search on this tool will display the price differentials pre and post rent control. Thus, the new reference indicates differences of up to 500 euros between an offer and what should be paid for that address. The objective of this index, as the Secretary of State has assured in the field of housing, is to curb speculation, so from now on anyone can access it and consult it freely. Another left-wing extremist group surfaces to launch attack in Berlin: – The Tesla Gigafactory in Grünheide near Berlin was evacuated on Tuesday after a major power outage. The left-wing extremist “Volcano Group” said it had carried out the assault on the power grid supplying the carmaker. “We sabotaged Tesla today,” a letter from the Volcano Group said, specifying an “attack on the electricity supply.” The facility is the only factory run by billionaire Elon Musk’s electric vehicle company in Europe. – Later on Tuesday, police said they were aware of the letter the Volcano Group and that they were checking its authenticity, which would take several days. – The state of Brandenburg’s Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU) spoke of a “perfidious attack” on the electricity infrastructure. Unknown people had set fire to the high-voltage pylon between Steinfurt and Hartmannsdorf early on Tuesday morning, the ministry said. Operator Stromnetz Berlin, meanwhile, said there were also outages in the Berlin districts of Müggelheim, Rahnsdorf, and parts of Neukölln. Some 2,000 households are affected. Europe To Asia Undersea Internet Data Cables Cut, Services Disrupted: – Three Red Sea underwater cables providing internet and telecommunications around the world have been cut as the waterway remains a target of Yemen’s Houthi rebels, officials said Monday. Meanwhile, a suspected Houthi attack set a ship ablaze in the Gulf of Aden. – What cut the lines remains unclear. There has been concern about the cables being targeted in the Houthi campaign, which the rebels describe as an effort to pressure Israel to end its war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Houthis have denied attacking the lines, however. – The cut lines include Asia-Africa-Europe 1, the Europe India Gateway, Seacom and TGN-Gulf, Hong Kong-based HGC Global Communications said. It described the cuts as affecting 25% of the traffic flowing through the Red Sea. It described the Red Sea route as crucial for data moving from Asia to Europe and said it had begun rerouting traffic. “We estimate that over 90% of communications between Europe and Asia traverse submarine cables in the Red Sea,” he said. “Fortunately, telecom operators have built a high degree of redundancy into the system – there are many cables traversing the Red Sea.” Full article: https://english.elpais.com/international/2024-03-04/three-red-sea-underwater-data-cables-have-been-cut-as-houthi-attacks-continue-in-the-vital-waterway.html

Should the closing time of restaurants be brought forward? An informal poll of readers by 20minutos: – Note: due to the page translator, the word “restoration” appears in the second option, where it should say “catering industry”. Diaz Doubles Down- Insists On Earlier Closing Times- Yolanda Díaz, on the closing hours of the restaurants, “From 22:00 hours the days have mental health risks”: {Translation} – The second vice-president of the government, Yolanda Díaz (SUMAR party, communist), spoke on Monday about the closing hours of hotel and catering establishments in Spain during an interview on the show “24h”, specifying that: “From 10 p.m. onwards, the working hours are nocturnal and have certain risks for mental health. These hours must be treated differently, and these working conditions in some cities in our country can be improved”, explained Díaz. – In this regard, the Minister of Employment also called for an end to “trivialising” the employment rights of professionals. “Let’s stop frivolising with these matters, they are very serious for the lives of workers in our country”, she said. “We are in favour of the good life, of people wanting to enjoy life, of measures that have to do with improving the quality of life, while respecting labour rights,” said Díaz. {…in a serious display of cognitive dissonance. -Ed.} – On the other hand, the leader of Sumar also highlighted the contrast between Spanish timetables and those of other European countries. “It is clear that the timetables in our country are very different to those in Europe. It is not normal for us to hold meetings in Spain at eight o’clock in the evening, it is not normal,” she said. {Excuse me, in summer many meetings are scheduled in the evening, after the sun is going down and the heat has lifted. Communists just can’t deal with truth very well, they have their own “facts”. -Ed.} – Díaz also referred to the criticisms made by the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who accused her of wanting people to be “bored and at home”. Ayuso pointed out on her X account on Monday that Spain is “different” to the rest of Europe and that “it has the best nightlife in the world, with streets full of life and freedom. And that also provides employment”. – In response to this, Díaz indicated that she was “astonished” at the frivolity with which Ayuso raises the issues, and added that the government is in favour of leisure, but with measures to reduce the working day. New ‘Water Batteries’ Are Cheaper, Recyclable, And Won’t Explode: – Water and electronics don’t usually mix, but as it turns out, batteries could benefit from some H2O. By replacing the hazardous chemical electrolytes used in commercial batteries with water, scientists have developed a recyclable ‘water battery’ – and solved key issues with the emerging technology, which could be a safer and greener alternative. – ‘Water batteries’ are formally known as aqueous metal-ion batteries. These devices use metals such as magnesium or zinc, which are cheaper to assemble and less toxic than the materials currently used in other kinds of batteries. In a water battery, the electrolytic fluid is water with a few added salts, instead of something like sulfuric acid or lithium salt. – Crucially, the team behind this latest advancement came up with a way to prevent these water batteries from short-circuiting. This happens when tiny spiky metallic growths called dendrites form on the metal anode inside a battery, busting through battery compartments. The feature also helps the prototype water batteries last longer, retaining more than 85 percent of their capacity after 500 cycles, the researchers’ experiments showed. – Although the new technology is unlikely to replace lithium-ion batteries any time soon, with further research and development, water batteries could provide a safe alternative to lithium-ion ones in a decade or so, says lead author, chemical scientist Tianyi Ma of RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia.
