CAS Scruffs Dog Show 2018: Just a quick reminder that CAS Scruffs Dog Show 2018 that was postponed last Sunday due to the weather warnings has been rescheduled to Sunday, 21st October, at the same time and in the same place. This was always advertised as the fallback date for this event in case of bad weather. As it is held jointly with Nerja Town Hall, who provide staff as well as the facilities, we have to honour this date. Apologies to the people who’ve been inconvenienced by the postponement and we look forward to welcoming those who are still able to support our event despite the date change. Taxi from Airport: Advice to all who call for a taxi at Malaga Airport. The meter is only half the charge, the driver will refer to a chart stuck to the rear side window which allows him to nearly double the meter display. Anyone know what this is? Found on a fence post, and at first glance, it looked like a piece of dried grass. The top of the post is about 3 cm x 4 cm, so I would guess that makes it around 5cm high. It doesn’t look like any stick insect I’ve seen before, and anyway it only seems to have 4 legs so it can’t be an insect at all can it?

In October we will watch the Moorish South travelling to Cordoba, Seville and Granada, visiting beautiful Moorish palaces and mosques, telling the story of one of the most colourful and sophisticated cultures to ever appear in Europe.  Refreshments available to purchase. -Tuesday October 23rd – Photography Group. From “Good Shot” to “Great Shot”, why not come and learn the art of photography with Rob Bell Photography. This season we will be looking at the various styles of  photography and computer software with monthly themes and photo challenges. Don´t forget to bring your camera. Time 16.00.

How Accurate Are Online DNA Tests by Scientific American Magazine:
With the plummeting costs of gene sequencing came commercial interests. All of a sudden any company could set up shop, and in exchange for some cash and a vial of saliva, could extract your DNA from the cells in your mouth and sequence your genome. Alongside the behemoths 23andMe and AncestryDNA, dozens of companies have done just that. There are two potential issues arising from the question of their results’ accuracy. Has the sequencing been done well? In critiquing this business, it seems fair to assume the data generated is accurate. But there have been some bizarre cases of failure, such as the company that failed to identify the sample DNA as coming not from a human, but from a dog. One recent analysis found 40 percent of variants associated with specific diseases from “direct to consumer” (DTC) genetic tests were shown to be false positives when the raw data was reanalyzed. Assuming the tests are done accurately, some discrepancies can still arise from differences in the companies’ DNA databases. Almost every DTC genetic test does not sequence your entire genome, but instead looks at positions in your DNA that are known to be of interest.
When it comes to ancestry, DNA is very good at determining close family relations such as siblings or parents, and dozens of stories are emerging that reunite or identify lost close family members (or indeed criminals). For deeper family roots, these tests do not really tell you where your ancestors came from. They say where DNA like yours can be found on Earth today. By inference, we are to assume that significant proportions of our deep family came from those places. But to say that you are 20 percent Irish, 4 percent Native American or 12 percent Scandinavian is fun, trivial and has very little scientific meaning.

What is a “Cold Reading”?
Our “cold” readings, by no means, are considered formal auditions, however it is one way our directors are able to assess whether you might fit the part of a specific character for future readings. U3A Axarquia
The U3A Axarquia is loosely based on but not affiliated to the U3A in the UK and the association has been running here in the Axarquia since 2009. Our aim to promote activities for learning for pleasure. We are a sociable association run by the members for the members, open to all English speaking adults of any nationality. Group leaders are volunteers and we are always pleased to welcome anyone who wishes to share their knowledge and skills. Activity Programme – Monday 15th – Friday 19th October:
-Monday 15th Petanque: 3pm, meet in the carpark west of the lighthouse in Torre del Mar. If you like to take part in this enjoyable game (Spain’s answer to bowls) come along and learn or improve your skill. Our aim is to enjoy ourselves while learning the rules and techniques.
-Wednesday 17th Chiki’s Creative Circle: 11am, meet at Chiki Beach Club in Algarrobo Costa-Mezquitilla. CCC provides the environment where U3A members come and enjoy working independently on their own projects such as knitting, crochet, lace making, leather crafts, painting, writing bead work etc. No guidance is given and participants are expected to purchase a refreshment. New for this month, alongside the Creative Circle, Norma will be running 2 new activities at Chiki’s on Wednesday both starting at 11am. Spanish Coaching: Learning a new language is a fabulous experience. However the journey can be trying. Norma will listen to you and offer you guidance on the spot either individually or in a small group. No fee but participants are expected to purchase a refreshment. Residencia Help/guidance needed: Hi to all knowledgeable Digamites out there. I need help about renewal of Residencia(residency in Spain). I have been a resident(UK Citizen) in Andalusia for just under 5 years. A few days ago a German friend told me i have to renew the “Residencia”(The little green card) after 5 years which i was not aware of (excuse the ignorance). Is this correct? Do i need to apply again and if so, how long does the whole the process take? Is this time for permanent Residency that my friend said it would automatically be? I seem to remember it took a few minutes when i first applied in Torre Del Mar Policia 5 years ago, my question is if i need to renew the little green card, is it as quick and simple as it was back then? Please let me have a precise and step by step guidance to this.

Holiday rental registration?: Can any Digamites help me? I’m trying to register our rural property for holiday rentals but am told I need a licence of occupation. I think that to get this I have to use an architect to do a ‘project’ to photograph all exterior parts of house then list rooms and sizes.
First – can anyone recommend someone to do this?
Second – has anyone registered their rural property and how did they go about this?
Any help in this admin minefield will be appreciated!

Red Cross initiative for English-speaking residents in Torrox:
As part of its programme of social inclusion, the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja), is shortly to launch an interesting new initiative in the Axarquia region beginning in Torrox Pueblo in November. It will be for any English speaking foreign residents living in and around the area who would like to meet new people in a friendly environment once a fortnight to enjoy a variety of social activities. For more details please see the poster.
Richard Weale, a British Volunteer with the Red Cross, said “This is a new opportunity for anyone aged over 50 to come along and take part in a range of activities, for example, informative talks, quizzes, cookery demos, films, learn simple Spanish words and phrases, training in the use of Smartphones and other technology, celebrating fiestas and special events and our team of volunteers will shape the activities to suit everyone’s needs. Above all, it’s an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends whilst having fun. We’re calling the project “The Open Door” because that’s exactly what it is, open to any nationality who are English speakers as all the activities will be in English.”

New Petrol Pump and Vehicle Fuel Labels: From October 12th, petrol pumps will look slightly different in Spain and across the EU, as well as in neighbouring countries including Norway, Iceland and Turkey.
Under the new EU directive, instead of “Unleaded” and “Diesel”, petrol pumps will be labelled with letters and numbers, relating to the type of fuel and the amount of biofuel it contains in a bid to help consumers select the appropriate fuel for their vehicles throughout Europe. To help with the transition, both the new and current labels will be displayed alongside each other at petrol stations. Under the new system, “Unleaded 95” and “Unleaded 98” will both be replaced by the letter “E” surrounded by a circular border, followed by a “5” for 5 percent biofuel or “10” for 10 percent and the fuel currently labelled “Superethanol” will become “E85”

Mastin Month: Tail Torrox would like to make October the month for rehoming some of our Mastin dogs. Mastins are quite large dogs but very friendly and often used by the goat herds in Spain. It is always harder for us to rehome the bigger dogs as they need space and exercise. We currently have 4 dogs that fit this description and they are all at a great age for adoption. Mastins make good guard dogs due to their size. Typically they tend to be a bit nervous of noise such as fireworks but have easygoing temperaments.
