Summer art exhibition Frigiliana till the 31st of August:
Inspirational summer exhibition in Calle Real 98 in Frigiliana “Summerjoy/ Alegria de verano”
This August Spanish artist Alberto Tarsicio and Dutch artist Lieuwke Loth exhibit their art in the exhibition space ‘Sala Real 98’.
We have now the last few days of the exhibition!
Alberto Tarsicio will show oil painting impressions of the summertime sun illuminating the Spanish sea.
He works with fluoride colors and is able to paint the waves and water in such a vibrant a way so that it feels like seawater splashes out of the canvas.
He will also show a series of paintings of radiant flowers.
Tarsicio was born and raised in the coastal area of Torre del Mar. Nowadays he is a professional artist showing his works locally and abroad.
He set up a cultural centre ‘3Puertas’ in Torre del Mar. It began as a cultural place where people could gather, and it is now a solid base for exhibitions, live music and exchanges with artists from abroad. Tarsicio will be present in the exhibition in Frigiliana as well on some of the opening days.
Lieuwke Loth is a Dutch artist based in Competa’s natural park. She runs a gallery in the center of the mountain village; “Galeria Luz de la Vida.”
She loves to create art, organise art events, and connect with other creative souls. She has organised the “Art Walk” for six years, and in autumn she will have her fifth International Symposium “LUZ” in Competa. She makes bronze sculptures and also lasercut metal pieces. She also draws and paints fantastic and colorful pieces. She loves traveling for inspiration and the works she makes are influenced by the cultures and countries she has explored. In this exhibition she will show primarily lasercut wall pieces. Some she designed in Uzbekistan and Thailand, others in Spain. They are made out of stainless steel or cortensteel. The pieces can be hung outside and inside. With some light on the works, they get an extra dimension. And it can give a complete different feel to your living room, roof terrace, patio, or garden!

Car Boot/Market. Sunday 1st September: We are now “Back to normal” after our summer break. So the regular monthly Car Boot sale/market is on at El Pantano Restaurant car park, overlooking Lake Vinuela, on Sunday 1st September 9.30am to 1.pm.
Easy to find on the A356 towards Colmenar.
Drive over the bridge crossing Lake Vinuela and the car park/bar is just ahead on the right hand side. Plenty of parking.
There are always bargains galore, old and new.

Many even stay and choose lunch from the varied menu available.

Ryanair pilots to join cabin crew in strike action planned for September: Unless a deal is reached this week, the low-cost airline’s aircrews will schedule stoppages on five days next month, compounding disruption from another 10 days of industrial action. The industrial action announced today by the SEPLA union will take place during the same month as stoppages already planned by cabin crew for the low-cost carrier. Those strikes are scheduled for September 1, 2, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27 and 29, while the pilots will be walking out on September 19, 20, 22, 27 and 29.

The Torrox Spanish History Group:
-Meeting on Tuesday the 3rd September at 11am at El Parquesol Restaurant in El Morche and the talk will be on the evacuation of children from the Basque country to the UK at the start of the Civil war in Spain in 1937. The talk is entitled “Expedicion a Englaterra” (the evacuation of the Basque children 1937). The speaker will be Anne Heyes. There will also be a short talk on the Arabs before their arrival in Spain in 711. We have had talks previously on pre-Islam and Muhammad. However, after Muhammad died in 637AD, there was a lot of arguments and resentment between the different fractions of Arabs about who should be the leader of Islam and this eventually led to the Umayyad’s leaving Africa for Spain.
-In October Roy Vernon will be giving a talk on Guernica which was bombed by the Germans on the 26th April, 1937 at the beginning of the Civil War. Roy’s talk is entitled “Guernica – Why!”
-In October there will also be a trip to Yegan which is in the Alpujarras after my talk on Gerald Brenan in June.
We do have a Facebook page now which is called the “Torrox Spanish History Group”, so if you would like to join please go the Facebook page and make a request. People can put ideas on the page, photographs etc.

Listeriosis Outbreak- Threat To Pets? A 72-year-old British man died last Friday, a day after a 90-year-old woman lost her life in hospital in Seville. Two pregnant women also contracted listeriosis, resulting in miscarriage in the first case and a premature birth in the second, at 33 weeks.
Now comes an infected dog? The CEVE, representing Spanish vets, has announced the case of a dog “strongly suspected” of having contracted the infection. According to experts, a 10-year-old greyhound has shown “digestive symptoms” after ingesting contaminated meat. The dog’s owners, a family with several members hospitalized due to the infection, took their dog to the vet last Friday after suspecting that their pet could also be infected. President of CEVE, Delia Saleno, has assured that the dog is doing well, after having suffered “diarrhea for some days”. “Fortunately it is a bacteria that affects dogs less. In this case, it is a 10-year-old animal and therefore its immune system is weaker, so the chance of contracting listeriosis was greater,” she said.

Listeria Update: A lot of new info has surfaced. Spain issued an international alert on Thursday with European authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO) “given the possibility that cases might be detected in other countries,” should tourists visiting the country have consumed the affected products.
It emerged on Friday that the carne mechada produced by Magrudis had been sold on to a firm called Comercial Martínez León for resale with a different brand name. The authorities were not aware of this fact until August 20, five days after the initial health alert was raised. These products were in circulation until they were ordered to be withdrawn on August 21.
“If the larding needles were contaminated, there is no doubt that other areas of the production line were too,” said Juan José Rodríguez, a professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and a member of the Spanish Society of Food Safety. Rodríguez explained that the “larding needle is an instrument used to fill raw meat, meaning that the bacteria should not survive the roasting process, and the final contamination may have taken place during another moment on the production line.” He added that the results were “worrying, because they reveal widespread contamination that was unknown to the heads of the company.” As well as carne mechada, Magrudis also produces eight more products at its plant. The central Health Ministry in Madrid advised on Thursday that consumers should not eat any of the products made by the Seville-based firm.

Almuñécar
9.30 am – Capilla de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (The Fishermen’s Chapel). This small chapel is situated towards the western end of the beach and set back near the Chinasol Hotel and seafront. There is a Eucharist every Sunday from November through to March, and there is a Eucharist service on every alternative Sunday (1st and 3rd Sundays of the month in April, May, September and October). There are no services during the hot summer months of July, August, September.
Nerja
12.00 noon – Iglesia de San Miguel, Plaza Andalucía. There is a Eucharist service at this time throughout the year. The church is within easy walking distance of the first large roundabout as you drive into town from the Malaga direction, by the bus station.

I bought this car with us when we moved here more than 10 years ago. 2003 model with 107,000 miles (171,000kms) As a second car it has had light use over here. Just passed ITV therefore valid until Aug 2020. Maintained by local garage so mechanically good and drives as you would expect a Mercedes to. But I’ll be the first to admit that externally it’s pretty battered and the paint has sun damage, however the interior is in much better shape.

Listeria Outbreak Update: As well as issuing a national alert over the outbreak, Spain’s health ministry said it had issued alerts to EU authorities and the World Health Organization yesterday.
What’s the source? The regional government of Andalusia warned last Thursday that meatloaf or pre-cooked meat, known as carne mechada was to blame. The source has been traced to contaminated meat sold under the commercial name “la Mecha” made by Seville-based company Magrudis.
On Wednesday, health authorities widened the recall to all the products manufactured in the Magrudis factory since May 1st and have closed the plant entirely. “Obviously there was a failure to follow the established procedures,” acting health minister Maria Luisa Carcedo told reporters. “Now we need to carry out the inspections and investigations to figure out exactly where this failure took place.”
Questions are being asked as to why it took so long to raise the alarm over the outbreak and for the contaminated meat to be recalled. Regional health authorities in Andalucia admit that it was first detected on August 5th but wasn’t until August 15th that a health alert was issued.
Rubén Sánchez, head of Facua, has called for the immediate dismissal of Jesús Aguirre, Andalusia’s regional health minister, for his “disastrous mismanagement” of the outbreak. Updated full article at: Source Link

Listeria Outbreak in Andalucia!: One woman has died and at least 80 people have been struck down with listeria in what is thought to be the biggest outbreak of the infection ever recorded in Spain. The bacteria has so far hospitalized 56 of those infected including 15 pregnant women, at least two of whom suffered miscarriages, said the Junta de Andalusia. Five victims are still being treated in intensive care.
Authorities are investigating whether a pork product sold by Sevilla-based Magrudis could be the source of the outbreak after several of those afflicted were found to have eaten it.  The product under investigation is a packet meatload called ‘Mecha’, of which a batch of 2,000 are thought to be the source of the contamination.
The Spanish consumer organisation FACUA warned that the outbreak could continue to grow as many people don’t show symptoms until between one and four weeks after consuming contaminated produce.
Although the product has been taken off supermarket shelves and the source investigated, FACUA warned that smaller stores may not have heeded the recall or that contaminated products could already have been bought and are in households awaiting consumption.
Listeria infection is rare and usually causes a mild illness in healthy people, but those at highest risk of serious illness include pregnant women, their unborn children and newborns, adults 65 and over, and people with weakened immune systems. Photo: Facua Full Article Here

Hundreds evacuated as Estepona fire continues to burn: A man has been arrested suspected of starting a fire that has led to the evacuation of nearly 200 homes in Estepona (Costa del Sol) when he decided to burn a bee hive. This morning efforts were redoubled to bring the fire under control with 170 firefighters on the ground joined by four fire engines plus 10 helicopters and planes in the task. The fire started at just before noon yesterday (August 19) in the Peñas Blancas area of the municipality and rapidly spread in the hot, dry conditions.
