Palm beetle expert needed: Much to our disappointment, we can hear loud munching from one of our very tall Washington palm trees. In the past we had a supply of the necessary chemical to treat palms, but now this is unobtainable unless you hold the required licence. Even our gardener can no longer obtain it. Does anyone know of a suitable company that will treat palms and have the equipment to reach into the crown, which is above ladder level now? Barbara, Torrox campo

Weather warning for heavy rain raised to amber for parts of Malaga province this Thursday:
– The Spanish Met Office, Aemet, has issued an amber alert for parts of Malaga province for Thursday due to the risk of heavy rain. This is forecast for the Serranía de Ronda and higher regions of the Axarquía, with the possibility of downpours of 30mm in one hour. The alert is in place from 6pm until midnight.
– A yellow alert for strong winds, waves, and rain remains in place across Malaga province with heavy rainfall forecast for Antequera, Valle del Guadalhorce, Malaga city and the Costa del Sol, with the possibility of 20mm in one hour.
– The other main weather events tomorrow will be wind and waves: alerts have been issued for maximum gusts of up to 80km/h along the coastal strip. The wind will be from the west (poniente). AI Chatbots Can Guess Your Personal Information From What You Type Or Say To Them:
– The way you talk can reveal a lot about you- especially if you’re talking to a chatbot. New research reveals that chatbots like ChatGPT can infer a lot of sensitive information about the people they chat with, even if the conversation is utterly mundane.
– The phenomenon appears to stem from the way the models’ algorithms are trained with broad swathes of web content, a key part of what makes them work, likely making it hard to prevent. “It’s not even clear how you fix this problem,” says Martin Vechev, a computer science professor at ETH Zurich in Switzerland who led the research. “This is very, very problematic.”
– Vechev and his team found that the large language models that power advanced chatbots can accurately infer an alarming amount of personal information about users- including their race, location, occupation, and more- from conversations that appear innocuous.
– Vechev says that scammers could use chatbots’ ability to guess sensitive information about a person to harvest sensitive data from unsuspecting users. He adds that the same underlying capability could portend a new era of advertising, in which companies use information gathered from chatbots to build detailed profiles of users. Some of the companies behind powerful chatbots also rely heavily on advertising for their profits. “They could already be doing it,” Vechev says.
– A simple example: if a person writes in a chat dialog that they “just caught the morning tram,” a model might infer that they are in Europe where trams are common and it is morning at the time of the dialog, that they don’t own a car and they are likely to either be a student or have a job.
