New Christmas lights on Calle Larios, Malaga Central: The lights, all new, are to be turned on 29 November, there will once again be three daily musical light shows, 6.30pm, 8pm and 9.30pm. The theme is a forest, decorated with suns, angels and autumn leaves. The decorations will be supported by 22 arches, and will be made up of 730,000 individual bulbs. The lights will be kept on for 40 days and the total cost will be 806,000 euros, 532,000 of which will be spent on the Calle Larios decorations. Aside from Calle Larios, 76 other city centre streets will feature decorations this festive season, including Calle Santa Lucía, Calle Nosquera and Calle Comedias, all for the first time. H&M to close its Vialia and Féliz Sáenz sites in Malaga and reopen in a combined store: Swedish clothing retailer H&M is to shut its two stores in the centre of Malaga and open a new two-floor site in the city’s revamped Centro Comercial Larios covered shopping mall.
The sites that will close are in Plaza Félix Sáenz, near the city’s main market, and at the Vialia mall, at the city’s main railway station.
The company has said that the change “is a natural development” and that staff will be relocated to other branches in Malaga province. The chain has already started liquidating stock at the two branches.

Prema Bar: I went to the Prema Bar cafe in Torre del Mar (Waterfront area Copo) for lunch. What a nice surprise! I ate the delicious lasagna, completely homemade, cook with fresh, healthy ingredients, fresh pasta rolled by hand. Very very good! Even the bruschetta was tasty and appetizing, prepared with tomatoes, garlic and basil from their vegetable garden, organic bread produced with sourdough. And finally a delicious chocolate cake, always homemade! I digested everything very well! Also in the room, there is a corner used as a shop, where you can buy organic products at 0Km and various seasonal vegetables from the garden of Prema. Peaceful environment and very friendly owners. I highly recommend specialties to lasagna lovers!

50 More Shades of Grey?: Running until November 11, an exhibition entitled MIRUM by photographer José Antonio Suvires pulls back the curtain on the world of sadomasochism in a way which is not prurient but opens the door on a practice that is little understood.
The collection of 28 photographs can be viewed free of charge between 10am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday at la Casa Museo in the Plaza de la Libertad de Mijas.

-Add Linux to your Windows 7 computer. Keep your Win 7 for offline activities, use Linux for internet. Police on the hunt for Halloween attacker in Nerja: Police in Nerja are on the hunt for a young man who allegedly tried to sexually attack an 11 year old girl during the Halloween festivities on Thursday.
According to the police report, the man was wearing a cap with is face covered by a scarf and was on a bicycle at the time.
The incident occurred on Thursday night during the Halloween celebrations in the Capistrano urbanization area when the man rode up to the young girl who was with a group of friends and grabbed her arm, allegedly trying to touch her intimate areas.
She managed to escape and alert her parents who then alerted the Guardia Civil.
No arrests have yet been made and police are finding investigations difficult due to the fact that at the time of the incident, there were hundreds of people in the vicinity, most of whom were wearing disguises.
The Guardia Civil have released a description of the man, stating that he was tall, blonde, thin and had his face covered with a cap and a handkerchief.

There is a Eucharist every Sunday from November through to March, and there is a Eucharist service on every alternative Sunday (1st and 3rd Sundays of the month in April, May, September and October). There are no services during the hot summer months of June, July and August.

9.30 am – Capilla de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (The Fishermen’s Chapel). This small chapel is situated towards the western end of the beach and set back near the Chinasol Hotel and seafront. There is a Eucharist every Sunday from November through to March, and there is a Eucharist service on every alternative Sunday (1st and 3rd Sundays of the month in April, May, September and October). There are no services during the hot summer months of June, July and August.
Nerja
12.00 noon – Iglesia de San Miguel, Plaza Andalucía. There is a Eucharist service at this time throughout the year. The church is within easy walking distance of the first large roundabout as you drive into town from the Malaga direction, by the bus station.

-Tuesday November 5th – U3A Photography Group. From “Good Shot” to “Great Shot”, why not come and improve your photography with Rob Bell Photography. A fun and informal group. Open to all, from beginners to the more experienced photographer, regardless of the type of camera and use. This season we will be looking at the various styles of photography and computer software with monthly themes and photo challenges. Don´t forget to bring your camera. Torrox cultural program released for Christmas: The Theatre show, La Granja de Zenón arrives in Axarquia for the first time as Torrox’s cultural program is released.
-The kids show, La Granja de Zenón, arrives at the Teatro Villa de Torrox on December 14 at 6pm with tickets priced at €13.50.
-The La Carpa Theatre will hold two performances, one for the popular children’s novel Matilda on November 27, and another on December 15 with the Christmas Festival.
-Remedios Amaya will perform some of her classic flamenco during the III International Festival of Cajón Flamenco, Cajonea, to be held on November 16.
-The Raíces Association will compliment the flamenco flavour of November with the show ‘Al compás del Tiempo’ on Saturday October 23.
-The elderly of Torrox will be invited to a New Years Eve Gala on December 27 hosted by the local council.

DoctorLaptop’s Tips #79: How Big Tech Ruined The Internet. Americans will remember that when cable TV arrived on the scene they sold us on the new service with two promises, better color picture quality and no more commercials. After 18 months they introduced hourly commercial breaks, then 30 minutes, then 15, eventually there were commercials every 10 minutes. It’s done incrementally so we don’t complain until it is too late. Bait-and-switch in slow motion.
The internet world has just completed a similar transformation. The old internet worked on some basic principles. One critical principle was search results; search results for a website with info on a given topic should be based on two things, the amount of traffic a site receives and the freshest content. Sites with more of these 2 filters rose to the top of the first search page. It was assumed everyone wanted the latest, most popular info. It worked that way for the first 15yrs or so. But big tech giants bought up all the competition, resulting in the entire search business being dominated by just a few players, Google/Bing/Yahoo/Yandex. So naturally they took advantage and manipulated the entire internet to their financial advantage. They only needed to change one thing to convert the internet from a super library to a late stage cable TV money making machine, search results went from being statistically determined to algorithm determined. You knew those algorithms were gonna be trouble just from the sound of it, right?
How was this accomplished? First, they perfected User data collection. Big tech keeps a detailed profile on file for everyone who uses the internet regularly. They don’t even need your name, they use your internet behavior to identify you. If you thought sparse personal metadata – random chunks of data about data – was hard to mine for the purposes of identifying individuals, think again. MIT researchers have just shown that it only requires four data points (the dates and times of purchases) from a 30 day database of credit card purchases by 1.1 million people to identify 90 percent of them. It is even referred to as your digital fingerprint in the trade. Other data they use to ID you includes all the websites you visit, all search terms you check, your computer equipment info, ISP address, even the timing of your keystrokes and more.
Once that was all in place they pulled the old switcheroo. They replaced the search filters with a new method of determining search results. Now they’re using Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning and algorithms as filters. So every time you enter a search term, the search engine first checks your profile, and the AI determines from that info what search results it can feed you that will loosely fit into you searched topic, but primarily generate them the most advertising income, accuracy and relevance be damned. If you search any popular topic in a major search engine and find on that first page of results any items more than a few years old, you probably are not even interested in that webpage. But AI has determined that something on that webpage will more likely get you to click on it and earn them a penny. So AI moves it up to the top results, despite other webpages offering the fresher, more popular info you would prefer.
Google was fined $2.7 Billion back in 2017 by the EU for manipulating search results. At issue for EU regulators was Google’s comparison shopping service, which Vestager believes the company had boosted unfairly by giving it “prominent placement” in search results — all the while having “demoted rival comparison shopping services.”
Web shopping sites do a similar trick called ‘dynamic pricing’. When you go to a site to check on a price, you will often find you receive a lower price if you use a old computer while in a low rent district. Using a new iMac on a fiber connection in an affluent area will often show significantly higher prices! Fact!

-The new Firefox browser update 70 is receiving many complaints. I suggest delaying this update for at least a week or 2.
-Apple GPS problem and forced obsolescence, again: Starting November 3, 2019, some iPhone and iPad models introduced in 2012 and earlier will require an iOS update to maintain accurate GPS location and keep the correct date and time. This, Apple claims, is due to the GPS time rollover issue that began affecting GPS-enabled products from other manufacturers on April 6, 2019. This is just another attempt by Apple to deflect responsibility for their forced obsolescence policies, as almost none of these designated devices are capable of installing the required updates! If you use an iPhone 5s or earlier it is now officially obsolete.

More than 80% of Spain’s egg-laying hens are still living in cages: More than 30 million hens in Spain live in overcrowded cages, according to 2019 figures from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. Each bird lives in a space the size of a sheet of paper and never sees the sun. Their beaks are trimmed and they endure constant stress as they lay around 470 eggs in a 100-week period. Spain, along with Portugal, is the European leader of the so-called “furnished-cage” system: 82% of hens are in cages, compared to the average of 52% in the European Union. Indeed, in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Sweden, caged hens make up just over 10% of the total.
According to the animal-rights group, the Animal Equality Foundation, six of Spain’s seven national supermarket chains – with the exception of Dia – have publicly committed to protecting animal welfare. -Sunday 21.00: The Candlelight Sessions hosted by Paul Hayes. A cozy night of tunes and songs by candlelight.

Canillas de Albaida welcomes campervans: Canillas de Albaida has allocated a specific area to enable campervans to park overnight without the fear of being fined or moved on. The parking space, the first to be implemented in the area, will have room for 22 caravans or campervans and covers around 2,500 square metres of land. The plan is to have the area completely adapted in three months, allowing it to be ready for the upcoming summer season.
The space has been designated as a ’parking area’ however and not a ‘camping area’ so tables, chairs and other camping accessories cannot be placed outside the vehicle, but it will provide a secure and picturesque area to spend the night before a day out in the national park.

Hearing Aids: I would like to say thank you to all the kind people who sent e-mails in response to my cry for help! Believe me, I am so grateful: I was resigned to flying back to the UK and beginning the long and arduous task of trying to sort things out there, but the manufacturer of my particular aids seems to have representation in Spain and even more wonderful has clinics fairly locally! So once I have managed to shake off a pretty grotty cold I shall make the appropriate arrangements. It occurs to me that perhaps a different type of aid could suit my circumstances better now that I am certainly in the position of skiing downhill re. age, so I shall have a quick recce of available types.

Torrox Spanish History Group:
-The Torrox Spanish History Group will be meeting on the 5th November and our speaker’s will Peter Afendoulis, a very accomplished and flamboyant speaker who presentation will is titled “Donald, Dónde están tus pantalones?” If you would like to know what that talk is about then come along and find out! I will give you a clue! There is a heart involved. Our second and very seasoned speaker will be Keith (Rockall) who will be giving a short talk on the Journalist and writer Carmen de Burgos.
-At our meeing in October we very much enjoyed an extremely interesting and well presented talk by Roy Vernon on the bombing of Guernica, titled, Why! Guernica. Roy’s talk complemented Anne (Heyes) excellent talk given in September on the evacuation of the Basque children from Bilbao to the UK in 1937 on the ship the Habana. We were also lucky enough to have two members of the history group whose families were evacuated to the UK, Mark (Dewey’s) family were evacuated in 1937 on the Habana and Jan’s (Urquijo) father was evacuated on a ship which left in 1939. Both Jan and Mark gave a first hand account of their relatives experiences. See photographs.
-We are also organising another coach trip some time during the end of November or the beginning of December, venue is yet to be agreed and of course we will be enjoying, as usual our Christmas Lunch in December.
