The great fear of landlords when they put an apartment on the rental market is the possible difficulty of taking back possession: {Translation, summary}
– The heads of real estate portals warned of the growing phenomenon of the inquiokupación that has become the great fear of owners when they decide to put a home on the rental market. “Many prefer to have their property empty rather than rent it out because of the high risk that a person will stop paying,” said Ferran Font, director of studies at Pisos.com, during his participation in the dialogue The future of the rental housing market, current problems. Font, who sat at the table with the general director of the Rental Negotiating Agency (ANA), José Ramón Zurdo, and the director of Studies at Fotocasa, María Matos, lamented the difficulties that homeowners have in resolving this problem “more or less quickly”.
– In addition, he pointed out that in the event that tenant is declared vulnerable, public administrations transfer to the owner additional responsibility “he didn’t ask for”.
– María Matos is of the same opinion, who added that the main concern of the owners is to know when they will be able to recover their home. “If owners were given the certainty that they would be able to recover their homes quickly, there would be no problems.”
– José Ramón Zurdo, for his part, also pointed out that this phenomenon is clearly reducing the supply of rental housing. “Owners prefer to sell their homes or move to other rental modalities such as tourist or vacation rentals,” he said. ANDALUCÍA
Tens of thousands of Andalucians protest in the streets claiming housing is a right: {Translation, summary}
– “I work hard to pay for hovel (zulo)”, has been chanted in Malaga, while in Seville has been heard that ‘greed breaks the neighborhood’. The criticism that the economic commitment to tourism is detrimental to the real estate market has been very present in heterogeneous protests, seconded by dozens of groups that put more or less the accent on the tourism factor but with a common thread: the rental prices are expelling residents from their neighborhoods. And now to buy a home is not even a consideration.
– Malaga para Vivir calculates that it has gathered more than 30,000 people (10,000 according to the Subdelegation of the Government) and that the demonstration has been even more successful than the one in June. Sevilla para Vivir has raised the figure to 35,000 (which the National Police count is lowered to 3,000), while Cádiz Resiste points out that there have been 4,000 attendees, to which should be added those who have come out in the municipalities of La Línea de la Concepción and Tarifa. The analysis is the same and quite simple: the situation is unsustainable.
– As an example, that of Amalia Vahí, of the neighborhood association Triana Norte, who said that four families who had been living there for decades have left a neighborhood block in a short time because they have doubled the price of rent. Or the story of Alejandro Gonzalez in Malaga, who lives in a house in which there are 15 people and who pays 350 euros for the room, “and it is the cheapest thing you find because the landlady is a conscious person, in fact she is demonstrating here too.” “I know a lot of people who live in apartments: apartments that have been reconditioned to divide them into six or seven bedrooms with a small kitchen and a bathroom, paying 650 euros to live in a dungeon.” Source, Spanish: https://www.eldiario.es/andalucia/decenas-miles-andaluces-exigen-calle-vivienda-sea-derecho-trabajo-duro-pagar-zulo_1_11805973.html
MALAGA PROVINCE
A new DANA arrives in the Mediterranean and may leave rain in Malaga from Wednesday: {Translation, summary}
– The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) warns of the arrival of a new DANA that will bring “abundant” rainfall this week in areas of the Mediterranean. In an information note issued this Sunday, the Aemet notes that there is “a wide uncertainty” regarding the position of this DANA and, therefore, the distribution and amount of rainfall. In principle, it is expected that the heaviest rains affect the Balearic Islands, the east and Catalonia, but is also expected on the Andalusian coast.
– In the province of Malaga, the Aemet indicates that rainfall may occur from Wednesday afternoon, with greater intensity in coastal areas and points of Guadalhorce. Although at the moment the highest probabilities are around 65%.
– This week the cold will return. “The entry of a mass of cold air is expected to move from northern Europe to the southwest in the coming days, reaching the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands starting on Tuesday, and producing a general decrease in temperatures,” indicates Aemet.
– From Wednesday 13 the rains could already extend over much of Spain, also in the form of snow in the mountain systems. That Wednesday afternoon is when you can begin to register the first rains of this episode in Malaga, first affecting the eastern coast of the Axarquia, and extending during Thursday and Friday to almost the entire province, mainly coastal areas and the Guadalhorce Valley.
– For Wednesday, the Aemet expects cloudy or overcast skies in Andalusia in the eastern half, where showers are likely, with snow over 800 meters at first, then rising above 1000-1200 meters. Low cloudy skies in the western half. Temperatures will be in generalized, leaving the maximum in the province of Malaga at 16-17 degrees.
– This rainy spell will last until next weekend. It is from Saturday 16 when Meteorology expects that rainfall will begin to lose intensity in the Mediterranean area and move to the Atlantic slope, although they insist that “the uncertainty about the evolution of the episode is very high”. Uptick in seismic activity- a 3.4 magnitude earthquake in Ardales is the latest: {Translation, summary}
– An earthquake of magnitude 3.4, with its epicenter in Ardales, a town located about 50 kilometers northwest of Malaga City, has been recorded this Sunday, as reported by the National Geographic Institute (IGN). Specifically, the earthquake occurred in the morning, at 10:34 am, at a depth of 19 kilometers and with a latitude of 36.9 degrees north and a longitude of 4.85 degrees west. On its website the IGN indicates that the tremor has been “felt” by residents.
– Also, this Sunday there have also been four small tremors in the Alboran Sea, recorded by the IGN at 10:45, 11:25, 11:39 and 13:01. The first three in northern Alboran, and the last one further south, near Melilla. The most important has had a magnitude of 2.4.
– The one in Ardales is not the only earthquake registered in a municipality of the province of Malaga this weekend. On Saturday another one took place in Alfarnate. In that case, the earthquake occurred at 9:58 a.m. and was even smaller (1.6 magnitude), at a depth of only 6 kilometers. Princess Kate attends Remembrance Day event in return to public duties:
– Britain’s Princess Kate attended a Remembrance Day event in London on Saturday, in her latest public engagement after undergoing preventive treatment for cancer this year. Kate arrived for the Festival of Remembrance at London’s Royal Albert Hall wearing a black dress adorned with a red poppy, which has become a symbol of respect for those who have lost their lives in conflict.
– She was accompanied by her husband William and other members of the royal family and was followed shortly afterwards by King Charles, whose wife Queen Camilla has cancelled engagements as she recovers from a chest infection.
– The Princess of Wales said in September she had finished chemotherapy, but her path to full recovery would be long. At the time, the 42-year-old said she would be carrying out a handful of public engagements later in the year. Her last public appearance was in October when she met the bereaved families of three young girls who were murdered at a dance class in northwest England. Kate is also expected to attend the main Remembrance Day ceremony. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/uks-queen-camilla-miss-remembrance-day-events-due-chest-infection-2024-11-09/
DIGAMEXTRA EDITORIAL
The Political Pendulum Swings Right In USA, Will Spain Follow Suit?:
– While there are not an overwhelming number of Americans residing in Spain, about 64,000, American influence is undeniable and ubiquitous. Trends spread faster than ever in the age of social media.
– Trump’s victory, taking more than 30 states, and about 4,000,000 more popular votes than Harris, is evidence of the popularity of both him and his conservative platform. Perhaps more importantly, it is evidence of a rejection of the far-left Democrat radical progressive agenda. Far more territory in the US voted for a return to conservative values. Harris’s support was confined to a few concentrated areas, with high demographics, but far less territory: the west coast and New England primarily. The county by county map below makes this contrast shockingly clear.

– Will we see this reflected in Spanish politics, where the right/left divide is reminiscent of the compound fracture we currently see in American society? Anyone who follows Spanish news will be aware of the dichotomy in Spanish society- hard opposing opinions, with little middle ground, and the “if you don’t agree with my politics you are evil” attitudes. Straight out of the American left’s playbook. With lefty Sanchez on very thin political ice, will Spain soon also see the pendulum swing?
– If you thought the US election campaign was distasteful, wait until you see the mess Spain’s next presidential elections are!
– These days the so-called “memory laws” are being challenged, giving new space for the escalation in confrontations we have not seen in this censored, post-Franco era. It is now common to see headlines with accusations of war crimes that were previously forbidden. Previously “off-limits” issues will be fair game in a campaign: nasty old grudges, blame games, old unsettled accounts, justice for forgotten victims in unmarked mass graves, and multi-generational family disputes.
– Transplants to Spain cannot understand these exclusively Spanish “silence” issues unless, perhaps, you married into a Spanish family where censored topics can be discussed in the privacy of the dinner table, or alternatively, you have done your “good ex-pat” homework and studied up on 20th century Spanish culture and politics.
– An essential part of the “good ex-pat” curriculum is the book “Ghosts of Spain” by Giles Tremlett (2006), I strongly recommend it. It will open your eyes to the “hidden” side of Spanish society, so critical to fully understanding our gracious hosts. Suddenly, the sometimes puzzling logic behind the how and why of what locals do and think will become clear.
