Russia reacts to Finland’s alignment with NATO and closes gas pipeline to Europe:{Translation, summary} Russian energy giant Gazprom announced on Thursday that it was halting gas supplies to Europe through a major Polish pipeline in response to Western sanctions over its offensive in Ukraine. This pipeline, the Yamal pipeline, had been carrying up to a quarter of Russian gas to Europe, but had been reducing its flow and was now at a record low. The adoption of these measures “results in a ban on the use of a pipeline belonging to the Europol Gaz Group”, the statement said, referring to the pipeline run by the Polish part of the Yamal-Europ company. Russia has also announced sanctions against more than 30 companies in the European Union, the United States and Singapore. Among those affected are several Gazprom Germania subsidiaries. Halting Erosion Using Vetiver Grass from Vetiver Spain: Vetiver Grass is a fast growing non-invasive clumping grass that grows to 2 metres in height. It has a root system that grows to 3-4 metres deep and they are very strong. The National Geographic Magazine has called them “Roots of Steel”. Once Vetiver is established it is drought resistant. We are located in Sayalonga and we can plant all year round but February and March are the best months to plant Vetiver. Vetiver loves the heat of a long summer to get established. Decomposing Vetiver used as a mulch, improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away as it is a natural insect repellent. It is in the same family as Lemon Grass, which we also carry. Vetiver also is a nutritious and replenishable animal feed. Horses, cattle, and pigs love it. We use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive Ornamental hedge. Andalusia’s new tourist housing decree- owners say it “criminalises” them:{Translation} 10 Mayo, 2022 – 14:10 -The regulation of tourist accommodation has always been a bone of contention and the processing of a new decree by the Junta de Andalucía is on its way to becoming another mess. The Association of Professionals of Tourist Homes and Apartments of Andalusia (AVVAPro) has announced today that it will present allegations to this new regulatory text and encourages all owners of this type of property to do the same because they understand that this decree “criminalises the sector and goes against private property”. -The Governing Council of the Junta de Andalucía approved on 19 April that the Regional Ministry of Tourism should begin the process of drafting a new decree on tourist flats (AT) and tourist accommodation (VFT). Although they may seem to be the same thing, they are totally different, as tourist flats are practically considered hotels and are governed by their own rules, while the dwellings are owned by companies or individuals and have different requirements. The Junta wants to unify the regulation of the two. -In the specific case of tourist accommodation, the Junta reported that “the operating conditions will be reviewed and the figure of the VFT management companies will be regulated as owners of the operation of several of these accommodations”, adding that “this figure will come to professionalise the operation of housing and to facilitate relations with the tourist administration”. -The Andalusian association of tourist accommodation does not see it this way. In fact, its president, Carlos Pérez-Lanzac, points out that the decree that is to be implemented “is tremendously burdensome and does not reflect the reality of the sector or its importance in the economy of our region”. This association does not oppose the regulation to put TA and VFT in the same bag, but believes that the measure “comes to restrict intervene and corset the figure of the VFT, creating the professional figure of VFT to destroy it, and proposes some modifications for the TA where the basic criteria are relaxed with unambitious improvements”. -AVVAPro stresses, as they have done on other occasions, that “private property is attacked when the conditions for the operation of the VFTs ensure that the same person or entity can only have two dwellings for tourist purposes in the entire autonomous community”. “Such a limit cannot be imposed if the aim is to professionalise the sector and serve consumers and users, as it would mean a significant loss of competitiveness for the destination,” they insist. -The owners of tourist accommodation assure that the market is already “perfectly ordered” and give as an example the registration of properties in the Junta de Andalucía and the existence of “highly effective supervisory and inspection measures, in addition to the mechanisms established in the Horizontal Property Law to limit holiday homes”. The employers’ association stresses that in Andalusia there are 84,172 tourist homes -most of them in Malaga- which generate 15,100 direct jobs and an income of 1.8 billion euros. -The emergence of tourist accommodation came as a complete surprise to the authorities a few years ago. There had always been individuals who had rented their homes to others to spend weeks or months in summer, but it was something practically homemade, by word of mouth or with the typical “for rent” sign hanging on the terrace. With the birth of Airbnb in 2008, this phenomenon multiplied, as any owner can put their property for rent to tourists on this platform and receive bookings directly through their mobile phone. Bookings were professionalised, demand, supply and business skyrocketed, catching the administrations off guard. It was and is easy money for the owners and a headache for the neighbours, especially when these flats are in fully residential buildings. -In 2016 the Junta de Andalucía passed its first decree to try to regulate this situation, obliging owners to register the properties and comply with a series of requirements. The bubble subsided because not every property was suitable for tourism and the pandemic put the sector on the ropes as it was unable to receive clients, to the point that many of the owners switched to renting out their properties to long term tenants. Tourism is back, tourist properties are once again enjoying high occupancy rates – at the long weekend in May they exceeded 80% in Malaga city – and the regulatory mess is back. We will have to see what happens in the coming weeks, although we must not forget that the Andalusian elections are on 19 June. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/

Malaga Mayor Discouraging Rowdy Tourists Just When Publicans Are Praying For A Tourism Recovery – Costa del Sol mayor calls for crack down on stag and hen party noise and disturbance: They’re back. The outrageous outfits and group T-shirts with dubious slogans. The good weather and easing of Covid-19 restrictions have attracted stag and hen parties back to Malaga. Alcohol is a basic feature of these parties, and with it come the hullabaloo and unrestrained noise. -The mayor, Francisco de la Torre, announced this Monday, 10 May, that the council will not allow Malaga to become an uncontrolled city and plans to take measures to prevent it. One idea is to install sound level monitors inside some tourist accommodation, although he didn’t give any details about how this would be done, so the authorities can take action if there is too much noise. He said that anyone who comes to the city has to abide by coexistence regulations and the council will take strong action if they do not. -Although he admitted that the number of complaints has increased in recent weeks, he also said that in the city centre there were no more than five calls a day to complain about noise. British Airways blames Covid for cancellations and refuses to pay compensation: On the day when British Airways cancelled another 120-plus flights to and from its main base, London Heathrow, it has emerged that the airline is rejecting compensation claims for grounded flights. -BA has serious resourcing issues which are leading to the daily cancellation of many domestic and European flights. The airline says that most passengers are informed well in advance. But if travellers are given less than two weeks’ notice, under European air passengers’ rights rules they are entitled to cash compensation of between £220 and £520 – depending on the length of the flight. The only grounds on which a carrier can reject a claim is if an “extraordinary circumstance” was responsible. -Nick Goodess was due to fly from London Heathrow to Hanover on 24 April. His flight was cancelled with a week’s notice, and he applied for the statutory compensation. But the passenger was told: “Your claim’s been refused because flight BA978 on 24 April was cancelled as a result of the global pandemic caused by Covid-19.” Full article: https://www.independent.co.uk/

The Sanitary District of la Axarquía exceeds the rate of 500 cases for COVID19 in those more than 60 years old:{Translation, summary} 9May22 -The figure is even worse in Vélez-Málaga, where it stands at 904.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. -The Axarquia Health District maintains a coronavirus infection rate of more than 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in two weeks. Brussels gives Spain and Portugal the go-ahead to cap the wholesale price of gas: Now the Spanish Cabinet will have to approve the decree which lays down the conditions and technical details of a measure which will be much more complex than it appears: capping the price of gas on the wholesale market at 40 euros per Megawatt hour to begin with, then lifting it to 50 euros/MWh for the rest of the period, during a maximum of 12 months. The restriction means the electricity pool could drop to around 130 or 140 euros/MWh, compared with the more than 200 euros/MWh in recent weeks. In other words, electricity bills could be reduced by around 35 per cent. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/brussels-given-spain-20220509175732-nt.html
Brussels tells Spain and Portugal that it has not yet taken a decision on the gas cap proposal:{Translation} -The European Commission has replied to Spain and Portugal on Monday that it has not yet taken a formal decision on the Iberian proposal to cap the price of natural gas for electricity generation, but has only issued a preliminary assessment of the draft it has received from the governments of both countries. -“Although no formal decision has been taken at this stage, the Commission remains in close contact with the Spanish and Portuguese authorities on the design of the measure,” a European Commission spokesperson told Europa Press. -The EU executive has indicated that it has “recently” received a draft of the technical measure that included “a large number of relevant details” on the political agreement of the ‘Iberian derogation’. However, the spokesperson for the European Commission has assured that to date only “a preliminary assessment” has been shared. -In this regard, sources from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge consider this to be the “usual procedure”, as Europa Press has learned. They consider it to be “a kind of pre-authorisation” if the legislative proposal presented by Spain and Portugal does not deviate from what has been presented to date. -“Some information is still pending and is expected [to be included] in the formal notification, which will happen soon. The Commission’s main objective is to reach solid and legal decisions as soon as possible,” said the EU spokesman. -On Monday, sources from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge confirmed to Europa Press that, having received the preliminary approval from Brussels for the so-called ‘Iberian derogation’, “they are still working to be able to take it to the Council of Ministers tomorrow or as soon as possible”. -Spain and Portugal sent their joint proposal to the European Commission at the end of last week, after weeks of arduous technical negotiations. -Under the agreement reached with the EU executive, the reference price for gas will initially be set at around 40 euros/MWh, with an average price of 50 euros/MWh over the 12 months it is in force. -This agreement, in line with the decision of the European Council of 24 and 25 March, compatible with the treaty and the regulations, will enable a temporary mechanism, the so-called ‘Iberian derogation’, to be put in place and provide coverage until the end of next winter. -In addition, all consumers will benefit from this mechanism, especially those who are indexed to the daily market (spot), those on the regulated tariff, the so-called PVPC. COSTA DEL SOL
Did you see a mysterious line of lights in the sky over the Costa del Sol early this morning?: To find out, we asked astrophysicist José Maria Madiedo of the Andalucía Astrophysics Institute, who is also the head researcher at the Smart Project. -“They were artificial satellites,” he told us. Specifically, they were Starlink satellites from the SpaceX project, which is owned by the multimillionaire Elon Musk, and 53 of them were launched from Florida on 6 May. They have been visible for the past few days as a line in the night sky, but over time they will separate and will not be so obvious. Photo:SUR. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/

ANDALUCIA
Andalucía adapts its face mask rules to the national Covid regulations: The regional Ministry of Health says the change is justified by the fact that the number of new coronavirus infections over a 14-day period has stabilised. This means the word ‘obligatory’ has been dropped when referring to masks in residential care homes and home help services. The use of masks, aprons and gloves is no longer compulsory for carers who go into people’s homes, either, but they are also obliged to comply with any changes the government in Madrid might make to the regulations. Masks are now only necessary (mandatory) on public transport and flights and in common areas in health centres and health settings (including pharmacies). Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/

Tennis News- Veteran Wawrinka rekindles fire with rare win in Rome: Stan Wawrinka believes he has what it takes to get back to playing “great tennis” again, the former world number three said after claiming his first victory in 15 months at the Italian Open on Monday. Covid-19- Researcher blows the whistle on data integrity issues in Pfizer’s vaccine trial:{British Medical Journal, 02Nov21} -A regional director who was employed at the research organisation Ventavia Research Group has told The BMJ that the company falsified data, unblinded patients, employed inadequately trained vaccinators, and was slow to follow up on adverse events reported in Pfizer’s pivotal phase III trial. Staff who conducted quality control checks were overwhelmed by the volume of problems they were finding. After repeatedly notifying Ventavia of these problems, the regional director, Brook Jackson (video 1), emailed a complaint to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Ventavia fired her later the same day. Jackson has provided The BMJ with dozens of internal company documents, photos, audio recordings, and emails. (Note: Sometimes it takes a while for these articles from technical journals to surface. This was published 6 months ago, but is only now making the rounds. -Ed.) Bought A New Computer Without An Operating System Trying to Save a Few Euros?:{DigameXtra} You see these for sale on Amazon, “laptop without operating system” (portatil Sin Sistema operativo). They are generally €80 to €150 cheaper than an identical model with Windows installed. Unless you intend to run a free version of Linux, you are going to need a copy of Windows to install. Here is what to expect. -Although Windows 11 is a free upgrade if you’re running a licensed copy of Windows 10 on your PC, Microsoft has now rolled out physical retail boxes of Windows installers. These can be purchased, or at least ordered, from larger computer stores. Amazon.es has several offerings, all with bad reviews warning of scams and installation failures. Better to buy it from a store you can return it to if necessary. -Windows 11 Home comes with a light background while Pro features a dark background. The former is priced at $139.99 while the latter carries a price tag of $199.99. These are exactly the same prices as Windows 10 Home and Pro, respectively. -If you’re wondering what the box actually contains, there’s a USB flash drive containing the installation and an activation key. -If you know how to install Windows and make a bootable installer, then another method is available. Using a working computer, you can go to the Windows download center and create a bootable installer for free, all you need is a 16Gb USB flash drive. Once that is installed on the new computer you have 3 days to activate Windows. To do that you need a Windows licence key for that exact version of Windows, HOME or PRO. These should only be purchased from trusted sellers. Often times with these grey-market licences the activation fails after 6 months. The internet is full of offers by scammers who will abuse your credit card info. BEWARE! Reference: https://www.neowin.net/

Wall Street’s losses worsen as markets tumble worldwide: Wall Street is tumbling toward its lowest point in more than a year on Monday as renewed worries about China’s economy pile on top of markets already battered by rising interest rates. -The S&P 500 was 2.3% lower in afternoon trading after coming off its fifth straight losing week, its longest such streak in more than a decade. It joined a worldwide swoon for markets. Not only did stocks fall across Europe and much of Asia, but so did everything from old-economy crude oil to new-economy bitcoin. Pilgrimage Dispute:{Translation, summary} The small and quiet hamlet of Los Romanes, with barely 400 inhabitants, belonging to the municipality of La Viñuela, in the heart of the Axarquia, is in turmoil these days due to a decision that has divided the neighbours. After two years of forced stoppage due to the pandemic, the Junta de Festejos has agreed to change the route of the pilgrimage planned for the last weekend of this month, on 27, 28 and 29 May, in the area around the Viñuela reservoir, next to the football pitch. The pilgrims come from the three main towns of the locality, with a population of barely 2,000. Those from La Viñuela, who carry the image of San José, and Los Gómez, who carry the Virgen del Carmen, will follow the same route as always. However, the pilgrims from Los Romanes, who venerate the Virgen de la Milagrosa, will have to travel twice as far as in 2019, some 17 kilometres, compared to the 8 kilometres they used to travel before. A group of residents have started a collection of signatures through the Change.org portal, which already has 200 signatures, to try to rectify this decision. Latest Survey Shows Andalucia Moving to the Right- The Conservative PP would win 48 deputies, seven more than the whole of the left and Right-Wing Vox would get 20 seats:{Translation, summary} The electoral poll published this Sunday by Vozpópuli has indicated that the PP would win the Andalusian elections with 37.2% of the votes and 48 deputies, a figure that would place it above all the left-wing parties, which together would total 41. For its part, Vox would obtain 20 seats and 16.9% of the votes, while Ciudadanos would disappear after the 21 deputies obtained in the last elections of 2018, reaching a percentage of 3.3%. According to this poll by Hamalgama Métrica for Vozpópuli, collected by Europa Press, Juanma Moreno’s PP would not obtain an absolute majority (55), so it would need the support of Macarena Olona’s VOX party to be able to govern the Junta de Andalucía. Time To Update Android: Google has released monthly security patches for Android with fixes for 37 flaws across different components. Be sure to update your operating system, then visit the App Store and make sure your apps are all up to date. Reference: https://thehackernews.com/
WhatsApp is rolling out free upgrades for iPhone and Android: The update means you can now have much larger group chats, and you can also send much larger files than before. But the feature that’s going to be used the most is the new reactions feature, which enables you to respond to messages with emoji. That’s going to be particular important in group chats, where it’s useful to show you’ve seen a message without adding to the firehose of messages. It’s something we’ve already got in similar messaging apps such as Facebook Messenger, and it’s very useful. Full article: https://www.t3.com/
New Malware Campaign- Previously Unseen Version of “Fileless” Malware Evades Consumer Level Anti-Virus Programs:{DoctorLaptop} Most anti-virus programs find malware by scanning your files. A few of the more sophisticated anti-virus programs use very basic “heuristics” that can identify malware by its startup pattern. However it takes a professional level scan with “advanced heuristics”, which observes “activity patterns” to identify fileless malware. These scans require the device be connected to the internet (the faster the better), so suspect activity can be observed, identified and removed in real time by the scanner company’s super-computer. These scans often take 8 to 12 hours each, and I have super fast internet! The scan must be repeated until you get an all-clean result. If malware was found, after it has been successfully cleaned, the Windows registry must be scanned, and patched if the removal caused damage. Then the Windows operating system must pass the “system integrity scan”. If damage is found there, then that must be patched. Now you have a malware-free, corruption-free, computer. This is included in every “Full Computer Maintenance Service” I do. A professional level annual service using the most powerful heuristic tools is strongly recommended to keep your device running at maximum performance / security and to extend its longevity. {Hacker News} A new malicious campaign has been spotted taking advantage of Windows event logs to stash chunks of shellcode for the first time in the wild. “It allows the ‘fileless’ last stage trojan to be hidden from plain sight in the file system,” Kaspersky researcher Denis Legezo said in a technical write-up published this week. “The actor behind this campaign is quite capable,” Legezo said. “The code is quite unique, with no similarities to known malware.” Full article: https://thehackernews.com/

A “blood moon” happens when Earth’s moon is in a total lunar eclipse. While it has no special astronomical significance, the view in the sky is striking as the usually whiteish moon becomes red or ruddy-brown. See times in image below. Editor’s Note Regarding Live Music Performances: I saw a concerning FB post today from a local venue in Torrox canceling upcoming music events. They have been informed by the authorities they may no longer host live music due to the Torrox Town Council changing the regulations. Commenters say at least one other local club, in Nerja, is in the same situation. Since I can’t verify any of the info, to determine if there are new rules, and if these are isolated cases or a sweeping ban, I will refrain from copying these posts for now. If you wish to see the FB post on this topic from the Torrox Community Group, go to (https://www.facebook.com/groups/644759172630423/permalink/1425786664527666/) Anyone with first-hand knowledge regarding these matters is encouraged to share what they know.

House Cleaning by SPW: SPW have turned up trumps, once again. My house, in Arenas Campos, really suffered from the Sahara dust. Having scraped up 5 bin bags of the dust from the terrace & path, after the first attack, I was exhausted. So with the second wave I called for help, in the shape of Scott of SPW Construction. They have just completed jet washing & painting & What a Difference. It now looks as if somebody lives in & cares for the house. Gleaming white. 2 polite & helpful lads have completed the task. It has been a pleasure to have them working here & to achieve such excellent results. Thank you once again SPW! Terry Massen: I am not sure if all the people who knew Terry in and around the Torrox area are aware that he died on the 31st August 2021 of a long illness. Terry and l bought our finca in 1989. He had taken early retirement from his job as an agricultural engineer. We loved Spain and our children and grandchildren had many happy times there. Terry was involved with the Los Amigos Club in Torrox Park and enjoyed preparing the weekly quiz for quite a while. At times, he actually used his own funds to keep the club afloat. We married in 1963. We never divorced and remained friends to the end. I will always cherish Torrox in my heart and remain friends with both our Spanish and English friends who have taken up residency in Spain. -Tina Massen, Torrox, tinamassenAThotmailD0TcoD0Tuk

Another Attack on a Famous Comedian – This Time, Comedian Dave Chappelle attacked on stage: American comedian Dave Chappelle was attacked on stage on Tuesday night at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles by an assailant who tackled him to the ground before being apprehended and arrested, video footage verified by Reuters showed. Lee had a replica gun that contained a knife blade when he attacked Chappelle. -Video footage posted on Twitter showed the assailant running onto the stage and launching his upper body into Chappelle, slamming his shoulder into the comedian’s ribs and chest. After the initial contact, the assailant and Chappelle took several steps before both fell to the floor, it showed. The assailant then stood up and ran around the stage, dodging a swarm of people for several seconds before they tackled him near the back of the stage. Chappelle’s Netflix comedy special “The Closer” was criticized last year by some who saw it as ridiculing transgender people. Supporters of the comedian viewed it as a cry against what is called cancel culture. -The attack occurred just over a month after actor Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars, an unprecedented incident at the globally televised event that prompted concerns that performers might face copycat assaults. In a few months, his situation became so critical that he had to be admitted to hospital. Bringing forward your retirement and not losing money on your pension? It is possible if you belong to these groups (including artists, singers, dancers & other performers):{Translation, summary} -As we get older, questions are often asked by human resources advisors: at what age will I be able to retire? How many years do I need? What pension will I get? Will it keep up with inflation? There are many factors on which the outcome of our retirement depends: the years of contribution, the age or whether the worker is self-employed, for example. -In this context, some groups are governed by a special category that allows workers to bring forward their retirement without losing pension money. These are some, but not all, of the groups that can take advantage of this special regime to enjoy early retirement without loss of pension: *Workers included in the Mining Statute: the early retirement pension is recognised for workers whose “circumstances of hardship, toxicity, dangerousness or unhealthiness” establish the scale approved for this purpose. The coefficient for this group can be up to 0.5, depending on their category. *Aerial work flight personnel: flight crew members, included in the labour ordinance. Depending on the category, the corresponding coefficient is reduced by 0.4 for pilots and 0.3 for other crew members (mechanic, photo operator, technological equipment operator, photographer and camera operator). *Railway workers: belonging to employees who have belonged to occupational groups and activities of a particularly dangerous or arduous nature. A coefficient of between 0.15 and 0.1 is applied to them. *Artists: singers, dancers and trapeze artists may retire at the age of 60 if they have worked for a minimum of 8 years during the 21 years prior to retirement. *Bullfighting professionals: matadors, rejoneadores, novilleros, banderilleros picadores and comic bullfighters can retire at 55 if they are registered and have participated in a certain number of bullfights. In total, 150 for matadors, rejoneadores and novilleros, while for the rest there are 200. At 60 years of age, the puntilleros, with a total of 250 festejos, and at 65 years of age for the mozos de estoques and assistants, also with 250 festejos. *Firefighters in the service of public administrations and organisations: they will be able to take early retirement with a reduction coefficient of 0.2. The minimum age will be 60, or 59 if they have accumulated 35 or more years of contributions. *Ertzaintza (Basque police): they may take early retirement with a reduction coefficient of 0.2. The minimum age will be 60, or 59 if they have accumulated 35 or more years of contributions. *Local Police: members of the Local Police who are career civil servants may take early retirement. The reduction coefficient will be 0.2 and the upper limit for early retirement will be 5 years before ordinary retirement (or 6 with 37 years of contributions). This Hungarian scientist claims that rats are capable of playing video games and reasoning intelligently:{Translation} -Viktor Toth, 30, has been conducting an experiment for the past 12 months to prove that rats are great decision-makers and can be as intelligent as humans. To do this, he tested them by playing the legendary video game “Doom”. -The fast and furry rodents, Romero and Tom, named after the video game’s creators, were able to navigate themselves through a series of mazes, open doors and even shoot monsters, Viktor said. -The neuroscientist from Budapest, Hungary, claims that rats are as intelligent as apes. He built a virtual reality setup to test his hypothesis. -Using a system based on a drinker tube and a rotating ball, the rats were able to move through the video game and overcome the various obstacles placed in their way. -Viktor recorded this video to prove that his hypothesis was real and left all his followers astonished. “It’s incredible to see the rat moving so intelligently,” commented one of his followers. Spanish Driving Licence Renewal: My husband’s Spanish Driving Licence is due for renewal in October this year. Previously he has renewed at Clinica Rincon in Torre del Mar. However, we have now been told that there is a van that goes from village to village for people to renew there, instead of always having to go to the coast. Does anyone know how we can find out the information for when it is likely to arrive in our village (Canillas de Albaida) please. Also, if anyone has used this service and how easy it is, what info we need, do they take a photo etc. Any information would be good please! Please email Lorraine / Canillas de Albaida at Email: tlv_ford@yahoo.co.uk

Plan to cap gas prices in Spain is delayed by a week: The implementation of Spain and Portugal’s plan to lower energy bills by capping gas prices will be delayed for at least another week. The head of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, admitted on Monday that the government was still working with Brussels to finalise the “last details” of the so-called ‘Iberian exception’, which means that the measure will “probably” not be approved at the Council of Ministers today, Tuesday 3 May, as planned. Spain drops to 32nd place in the world ranking of press freedom: The non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) warned on Tuesday of a “new era of polarization”, reinforced by “information chaos”, which is leading to an increase in “social fractures” at the international level in the face of a growing polarization also between states. A statistic from which Spain does not come out well. Spain has fallen three places in the world ranking of press freedom. It falls, specifically, to position number 32, despite the fact that the climate of violence against journalists has eased with the deactivation of the Catalan conflict. What has increased is the “political polarization” in the media. The list is headed by Norway, Denmark and Sweden, which “remain a model in which freedom of expression is realized in all its splendor.” Following behind are Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Portugal and Costa Rica, all of them with a “good” situation. OCU detects price rises of more than 10% in supermarket chains:{Translation} -Prices in the main supermarket chains have risen by 9.4% on average between 20 March 2021 and 8 March 2022, according to a price study by the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) on 156 food, hygiene and drugstore products in ten Spanish cities. A worrying increase in prices is due to different factors: the main one, the rise in energy and raw material prices, such as fertilisers, wheat and oil, which are a burden on the production and distribution of agricultural and livestock farms; but also the war in Ukraine and the resulting geopolitical tensions. -The fact is that not all supermarket chains have increased their prices in the same way. Carrefour accumulated a rise of 12.1% over the last 12 months and Mercadona 11.4%, while in El Corte Inglés and Hipercor the rise was 7.7%. -The rises affected 84% of the products analysed, especially food products. The most affected products include oils (average price rises of 34%), fish (16%), packaged food (11%) and dairy products (11%). These increases are especially felt in private label products, since they start from lower prices. In fact, the OCU describes these rises as very worrying as, if they continue, they will mean an increase of more than 500 euros a year in the average family’s shopping basket. -In view of this situation, the OCU calls on the Administration to implement measures to protect the most economically vulnerable households. And it takes the opportunity to remind consumers of the importance of choosing the cheapest supermarket, for which it makes its price comparators available to consumers. It is vital to identify those establishments in the neighbourhood with a policy of habitually low prices, prioritising them over those characterised by one-off star offers. Tennis News- Madrid Open Tuesday Results: – Novak Djokovic ensured he would keep his number one ranking by extending his winning record against Gael Monfils with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in Madrid. -Sixth seed Andrey Rublev survived a difficult day on Estadio Manolo Santana, needing to rally from 0-3 down in the decider to overcome British wildcard Jack Draper 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Rublev is the joint leader – alongside Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz – on the ATP tour this season with three titles. -Another seed pushed to his limits was Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz. The 12th seed fought for nearly three hours before completing a 7-5, 6-7 (11/13), 6-3 victory over Bolivian qualifier Hugo Dellien. Hurkacz’s reward is a second-round date with in-form Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. -Meanwhile, former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu’s Madrid campaign came to an end at the hands of American 12th seed Jessica Pegula, 7-5, 6-1. Despite a rain interruption in the second set, Pegula wrapped up the win in under two hours and set up a quarter-final against home favourite Sara Sorribes Tormo. -Sorribes Tormo (photo) became just the fourth Spanish woman to reach the last eight at the Madrid Open, navigating a tricky draw that saw her dispatch Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Naomi Osaka before her 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win over Daria Kasatkina on Tuesday. Global Chip Shortage’s Latest Worry- Too Few Chips for Chip Making: The drought in chip availability that has hit auto production, raised electronics prices and stoked supply-chain worries in capitals around the globe has a new pain point: a lack of chips needed for the machines that make chips, industry executives say. The wait time it takes to get machinery for chip-making – one of the world’s most complex and delicate kinds of manufacturing- has extended over recent months. Early in the pandemic it took months from placing an order to receiving the equipment. That time frame has stretched to two or three years in some cases, according to chip-making and equipment executives. Full article: https://www.wsj.com

Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower Peaks This Week As We Pass Through Tail Of Halley’s Comet: Every year, between late April and mid-May, Earth hurtles through debris left in the wake of Halley’s Comet (1P/Halley) – and it’s set for peak viewing this week. The meteors are rocky remnants and debris from the famed comet, and your best chance to spot these shooting stars is in the hours before dawn on Thursday, May 5. -The Eta Aquarids are famously speedy, entering Earth’s atmosphere at 66 kilometers (41 miles) per second and producing a high number of glowing, persistent “trains” of incandescent debris following the meteor’s path, lasting anywhere from several seconds to minutes, according to the American Meteor Society. -They will be best seen in the Southern Hemisphere. You will have to get up around 2-3 am on the morning of May 5 for the best view, where you could be rewarded with up to 50 shooting stars an hour. -For those in the Northern Hemisphere, you’re looking at between 10-30 meteors an hour. An Angel Wing in Space: This Hubble Space Telescope image features two merging galaxies in the VV-689 system, nicknamed the Angel Wing. Unlike chance alignments of galaxies, which only appear to overlap when viewed from our vantage point on Earth, the two galaxies in VV-689 are in the midst of a collision. The galactic interaction has left the VV-689 system almost completely symmetrical, giving the impression of a vast set of galactic wings. -“Zoo Gems,” interesting galaxies from the Galaxy Zoo citizen science project is a crowdsourced program and relies on hundreds of thousands of volunteers to classify galaxies and help astronomers wade through a deluge of data from robotic telescopes. In the process, volunteers discovered a gallery of weird and wonderful galaxy types, some not previously studied. UK
UK-Issued Driving Licences No Longer Valid for Britons Living in Spain From May 1: -The United Kingdom authorities have announced that starting from May 1, all British citizens who have been residing in Spain for over six months will no longer be permitted to drive with their UK-issued driving licences. -The news was announced last night by the British Ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliott, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports. The UK and Spanish Ministers have been trying to reach an agreement over the mutual exchange of driving licences for some time now. The Spanish authorities extended the period of validity of the UK driving licences for the fourth time in February. However, it seems like this time there will be no extension. -The British Ambassador has explained that since the two countries have failed to reach an agreement in time, British nationals who have been residing in Spain for more than six months will no longer be able to drive with their driving license that has been issued in the UK. -However, it has been emphasised that this does not affect UK license holders who have just recently arrived in Spain. Those who have arrived in Spain recently have six months time from the moment they were granted Spanish residency to take the driving test in order to obtain a Spanish driving license. -In addition, the Ambassador highlighted that the change also does not affect visiting motorists from the UK or Gibraltar. EU set to ban Russian oil, ministers hold crisis talks on gas: The European Union was preparing a ban on Russian oil, with possible exemptions for wary countries, as EU energy ministers on Monday held crisis talks on Moscow’s demand that foreign buyers pay for gas in roubles or lose their supply. Russia supplies 40% of EU gas and 26% of its oil imports. To keep the 27-nation bloc united, the Commission may offer Hungary and Slovakia an exemption or a long transition period – with the overall ban likely to be phased in by the year-end, officials said on Monday. IPTV Crackdown- US Court Orders Every ISP in the United States to Block Several Illegal Streaming Sites: More than a decade after U.S. lawmakers scuttled the controversial SOPA legislation that would’ve required ISPs to block pirate sites, a US court has demonstrated that the ability to block sites has been available all along. Injunctions issued in response to lawsuits against three pirate streaming services require every ISP in the United States to prevent subscribers from accessing them. THE END OF INTERNET EXPLORER BROWSER- Microsoft says, please stop using Internet Explorer before it runs out of support next month: Microsoft announced in mid 2021 that it will retire the company’s Internet Explorer 11 browser in most Windows versions in June 2022. Microsoft is asking organizations to set a retirement date for Internet Explorer before June 15, 2022 to ensure that company employees won’t run into issues when IE retires. Internet Explorer 11 won’t start anymore on its retirement date and Microsoft Edge will be loaded automatically, according to Microsoft. The company suggests that the new Microsoft Edge web browser is used instead by organizations, as it supports legacy Internet Explorer features through its IE Mode functionality. Bird flu puts organic chickens into lockdown from Pennsylvania to France: Organic and free-range chickens have been thrown into lockdown. Egg-laying hens that normally have access to the outdoors can no longer roam as freely or feel the sun on their beaks as some U.S. and European farmers temporarily keep flocks inside during lethal outbreaks of bird flu, according to egg producers and industry representatives. The switch comes as a surprise to shoppers already shelling out more money for eggs due to cullings of infected flocks.
