Fiesta Gaucha & More- Benalmádena: Fri, 30 Aug to Sun, 1 Sep
– “An authentic” Argentine festival + Arab Souk
– At El Bil Bil castle on the Paseo Marítimo. Starts at 7pm each evening, will present folkloric music and traditional Argentine dance shows, including tango, Malambo and ballet.
– Also, Benalmádena Pueblo’s most emblematic streets host a dream Arab Souk this weekend, the largest to date, with new areas and more entertainment on offer, as well as a local show that will pay tribute to Medina Azahara and Triana through the local band Ziryab. In addition to this, the Arabian Souk will feature exclusive falconry and a great bird attraction to give visitors an insight into what this type of souk was like in ancient times.

Fiesta del Boquerón Victoriano (Victorian Anchovy Festival):
Rincón de la Victoria. Tuesday-Sunday, 3 to 8 Sep.
The programme of activities will include live cooking, tastings of anchovies in the town’s restaurants, a network of catering establishments promoting this product, and the “Sabor a Málaga Fair” with the sale of products from the province, live music and even activities for the little ones.
As is traditional, on 6, 7 and 8 September, there will be free tastings of fried anchovies and anchovies in vinegar in 61 restaurants in the municipality. These tastings will be served for lunch and dinner while stocks last and with a set timetable, from 13:00 to 14:30 and from 20:30 to 22:00. All of them will have a sign on the door to identify participating establishments. Also during these days, the Plaza Al Ándalus will host a marquee where you can taste boquerones en vinagre (anchovies in vinegar) free of charge and during the same hours as in the restaurants.

– At the Principe de Asturias municipal auditorium, will present a live concert with several bands, including La La Love You, Karavana, Colectivo Da Silva and Lord Malvo, along with several established DJs. The bands perform a variety of different genres, such as pop, punk, soul, reggaeton, rock and flamenco.

If you are approaching from the coast/Velez Malaga, drive over the bridge crossing Lake Vinuela and the car park/bar is just ahead on the right-hand side. Plenty of parking.

Two arrested for exploiting migrant workers in fast food outlet on Costa del Sol:
– Spanish police have arrested two men in Granada for allegedly exploiting migrant workers in fast food outlets, including one in Vélez-Málaga on the eastern strip of the Costa del Sol.

Young woman receives deep cut near jugular vein on neck during brawl in Torre del Mar:
– A young woman narrowly avoided serious injury after she received a deep cut to the neck – near the jugular vein – during a fight between four people in Torre del Mar. Several witnesses alerted emergency services to the brawl at a house in the Las Melosas area, east of the town centre about 5pm, Tuesday 27 August, in which two couples were involved.
– The fight allegedly started after a family argument over a mobile phone charger. The conflict then became increasingly tense and during the course of it one of the girlfriends was injured by a 25-year-old man, who was arrested by National Police officers. TORREMOLINOS

Sad sight as the green areas of Torremolinos drink the town’s boating lake dry:
– At the beginning of the year, the pond in the green lung of the town ceased to be considered as a landscaping and leisure element and became a strategic water reserve. It was in mid-January when the town hall announced that given the situation of extreme drought, the 4.5 million litres of water of this artificial lake were going to be used to irrigate green areas.
– Barely eight months later, the situation is different. The little water that remains in La Batería only irrigates the vegetation in the park, not much more. Boats will be moved to dry storage to avoid damage. Given the circumstances, it seems unlikely that the lake will return to its former glory. Small village scandal after sex act filmed on church altar goes viral:
– A video of a sexual act involving a man and a woman on the altar of the church of the Inmaculada Concepción in El Centenillo {pic} has outraged residents in the Andalusian village in Jaén province. As Canal Sur reported this Wednesday morning (28 August), the couple allegedly made the recording, but it ended up being circulated online among the village’s population of 100 inhabitants.
– As far as SUR has been able to learn, one of the persons involved has already left the village, and the other does not live in El Centenillo.

Euribor heads for its biggest monthly drop in 15 years with average mortgage down by up to 919 euros per year: {Translation, summary}

A scenario that is unlikely to return in the short or medium term. In the eurozone, inflation remains stable at around 2.6% (very close to the 2% target); wage rises (an indicator of great concern to the ECB) have moderated and the US Federal Reserve has recently announced that it will lower rates for the first time two and a half years after starting to raise them.
– The signals sent by central banks in the coming weeks will be key to anticipating the future of the Euribor. It would not be the first time that the markets err on the side of optimism and bet heavily on rate cuts that in the end do not happen. New ‘Dana’ weather system set to affect south of Spain:
– Spain’s state weather agency (Aemet) is forecasting the arrival of a ‘Dana’ isolated high-level depression on Thursday 29 August, which will bring a change to the weather in the south of the country. This phenomenon will extend until the end of the week and generate instability in large parts of Andalucía, with rainfall in most of the region, as well as a generalised drop in temperatures of between two and five degrees.
– The director of the Aemet weather centre in Malaga, Jesus Riesco, explained that during today (Monday 26 August) and Tuesday there could be rainfall “locally accompanied by some storms” in the eastern mountain ranges of Andalucía – mainly Almeria, Granada and Jaén provinces – where heavy rains have already been recorded during the past weekend.
– On Wednesday 28 August, a phenomenon known as the southern circulation – a large-scale movement of air that will enter through the north of the Spanish mainland – will leave “not very significant” rainfall in Malaga and Cordoba provinces, while on Thursday the arrival of a Dana or cold drop is forecast, which will be located in the southwest of the Spanish mainland and will affect “large areas of Andalucía”.

Fiestas de la Pasada de Granadillo- Canillas de Aceituno:
Sat & Sun, 24 & 25 Aug.
– Saturday, after the “tiroda de cohetes” (“rocket firing”, so probably fireworks) at 09:00h, there will be a dominoes competition from 12:00h, while from 18:00h there will be ribbon races with bicycles, motorbikes and hand carts, and it is essential to come in fancy dress. From 20:00h, there will be a rociera mass in honour of the patron saint, the Immaculate Conception and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, performed by the Romeros de la Blanca Paloma Choir from Corumbela, and a procession accompanied by the Canillas de Aceituno brass band. After these activities, the participants will be able to enjoy dancing in the stall with a stellar performance by Leo Music and the election of the Queen, Ladies and Mister of the Fiestas. At 01:00h a Bingo will be held and from 03:00h dancing until dawn.
– Sunday from 14h, the Junta de Festejos has prepared a great meal with beer, soft drinks, snacks and paella for all attendees. From 17:00h the party continues with a performance by DJ Javi Rojo, while at 20:00h there will be the breaking of botijos and piñatas loaded with sweets and other surprises.

Tree Surgeon: I have an apricot tree which yielded a massive crop this year but now it is seeping sap from the trunk and looking sad losing it’s leaves. I read that if the tree is more than two years old it should be pruned July or August and not in the winter when it has been previously. Can someone advise me of a tree expert as in the Winter I will also have other trees that need pruning.

Spain’s so called progress against unemployment is just another socialist hoax, Gov’t falsely inflates jobs numbers, almost a million more are unemployed than admitted: {Translation}

They have simply quantified real jobs, part-time jobs, hours actually worked, jobseekers in each group, people in training, etc. In other words, they have simply eliminated the optical effects of statistics that are increasingly full of deception and less and less transparent. And the conclusions are the opposite of those of the government.
– ‘The number of unemployed registered in the Public Employment Services Offices, at the end of July, has fallen by 10,830 people compared to the previous month’. Absolutely true. But we must dig deeper. ‘In seasonally adjusted terms, registered unemployment fell by 12,378 people. There is a slightly lower decrease than last year’. ‘Is the labour market slowing down, as anticipated by the recent EPA?’, asks the USO research department.
– The detail of the official data answers this question: ‘The total number of unemployed (’people not working or not employed”) registered in the Public Employment Services reaches 3,089,167. These are distributed into registered unemployed: 2,550,237; other not in employment (in training): 195,049; and with limited availability or specific job demand: 343,881. In addition, we could add the 8,687 workers who at the end of the month were in an ERTE’.
– Well, of all these, the Government only recognises the unemployed officially registered as such: 2,550,237.
– Let us continue. ‘Nor are the job seekers with an employment relationship (which includes inactive discontinuous permanent workers) not counted in the total number of unemployed, which for yet another month is not broken down by the SEPE and which are included in the employed job seekers (although they are inactive, i.e. unemployed)’, warns the USO. And how many do they add up to? ’The latter have increased in July by 171,381. This would bring us, with an estimate of 900,000 inactive people who are ready to work, as the latest EPA does, to a total number of unemployed people of around 3.6 million’, the union’s experts explain. 1.1 million people above the number of unemployed that the government boasts about. Quite a deceptive trick. Or an example of manipulated and even distorted statistics.
– And the fact is that, ‘if we analyse the inter-annual variation of the number of unemployed we see how the one produced between June 2023 and 2024 is the worst (lower) of the last 11 years, except for 2019 and 2020, data directly affected by the pandemic’, adds USO.
– Moreover, qualitatively, the data does not pass the test of the usual political optimism either: ‘In July 2024, 589,007 employment contracts of an indefinite nature were registered, representing 38.71% of all contracts when in June this percentage was 41.15 and in May 43%’. Deep concern and unease following spate of 20 holiday home burglaries in Axarquia:
– Property owners in Torrox, Frigiliana and Nerja on the eastern side of Malaga province have reported a spike in the number of burglaries in holiday rental properties in recent weeks coinciding with the summer season.
– The last three attempted burglaries took place on Thursday 22 August, just as the pyro-musical show that kicked off this year’s Frigiliana 3 Culturas festival got under way. The owners of several rural houses received warnings on their mobile phones that video surveillance cameras had detected movement in their properties.
They quickly alerted the Guardia Civil and the rural guards in Frigiliana. The officers arrived within minutes and found several individuals in the area, who had smashed doors and windows in an attempt to gain access to the properties.
– . The three properties are located in the Nerja, in La Morea, which is on the border with the neighbouring town of Frigiliana.
As SUR has learned, these are three new cases that add to a list of some twenty burglaries that have been reported in recent months in rural areas of Torrox, Nerja and Frigiliana. In most cases the burglars gained access to empty houses, but in one of the attempts they attacked one of the residents, causing her to fall down the stairs.
– Residents have set up WhatsApp groups and installed video surveillance cameras with motion and temperature sensors in an attempt to deter burglars. However, the thieves are not deterred, and in some cases they have tried to damage the cameras.

Frequent on-line sellers warned- The Treasury begins to send fines to people repeatedly selling second-hand clothing and objects on Vinted, Wallapop, Milanuncios & other websites or apps: {Translation}

But that was amended in January this year, when Royal Decree 117/2024 came into force in Spain transposing the European Directive DAC7 (Directive 2021/514), which obliges platforms for buying and selling second-hand goods to collect, verify, update and communicate to the Treasury the details of certain sellers, those users who have made 2,000 euros in profits in a year or have carried out more than 30 transactions.
– As José María Mollinedo, secretary general of the Trade Union of Technicians of the Ministry of Finance (Gestha), explains, the spirit of the law is to detect those people who have turned selling used products online into a profession. What is more, according to this expert, the Treasury has detected the existence of individuals who are already real submerged companies in the shelter of ecommerce, taking advantage of sales in department stores to acquire products at low prices and sell them without paying taxes.
– However, those who have sold a pair of T-shirts on Vinted or a bike on Milanuncios can relax, of course depending on the value of the bike. If the amounts provided for in the Directive are exceeded, the platforms will inform the tax authorities. The problem, explains Mollinedo, is that until now users have been unaccustomed to this, and it is possible that many of them will be caught by surprise by the letters from the tax office.
– How much will the penalties be? In the event of a penalty, Mollinedo explains, in most cases it will be 50% of what should have been paid. He gives an example: if a person sells a bicycle for 4,000 euros that had cost 3,000 euros, those 1,000 euros will be capital gains, which in Spain is taxed at a rate of 19% on savings income. – The Directive came into force in January with effect on operations carried out in 2023 and the 2023/2024 income tax campaign ended on 1 July, so the warning letters and penalties for non-compliance could start to arrive at the end of August, although it is expected that the bulk will be processed in September, which is when the ‘truce’ given by the Inland Revenue for the summer period comes to an end. Mollinedo explains that we will have to wait a few months to find out what benefit this regulatory change will have on the State’s coffers.
– The ‘second-hand tax’ arose as a response to the unusual boom in Internet sales between private individuals in recent years. According to data from Mangopay, a payment infrastructure provider that services the world’s leading platforms (Wallapop, Vinted and Milanuncios among them), in Spain the sector has grown by 90% in the last three years. What’s more, a recent report by US marketplace ThredUp, a global ecommerce giant, estimates that the volume of used clothing sales and purchases will double by 2027, growing three times faster than the overall market, to represent 10% of the global textile market. Junta of Andalucia accuses Montero of ‘taking the piss’ out of Andalusians after the agreement on ‘privileged funding’ for Catalonia: {Translation}
– The Minister of the Presidency, Interior, Social Dialogue and Administrative Simplification of the Andalusian Regional Government, Antonio Sanz (PP) {pic}, on Thursday accused the First Vice-President of the Government and Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, of ‘making fools of the Andalusians’ after her statements on Wednesday in which she denied that the agreement between the PSC and Esquerra Republicana de Cataluña (ERC) for the investiture of the socialist Salvador Illa as president of the Generalitat (regional government) involves an ‘economic agreement’ or a ‘reform of the system of regional funding’.
– The Minister of the Presidency made this statement on Wednesday during a visit to the Rota Town Hall (Cádiz), in relation to the agreement on the financing of the Catalan administration between the PSC and ERC this summer.
– Following these statements by the Finance Minister, the Government of the Junta wanted to ask Montero to ‘stop insulting the Andalusians’, because, according to the regional minister Antonio Sanz, her words on Wednesday represent ‘an insult to the Andalusians’, whom the vice-president ‘takes us for fools’. ‘We know what an economic agreement is, what the quota is, and we know what a singular and, therefore, privileged financing of Catalonia is compared to the rest of the autonomous communities’, and “to deny this is to make fools of us”, said the representative of the PP-A government.

– Along these lines, Antonio Sanz emphasised that the Andalusian Government is going to try ‘with all possible legal and political means to prevent this outrage against Andalusia’, and maintained that this agreement represents ‘an economic blow against Andalusia led by the PSOE’, a party which the Minister criticised for ‘favouring territories against Andalusia’.
– From this premise, the Minister has encouraged the Andalusians to ‘clearly rebel’, and has stressed that from the Board governed by the PP-A ‘we will do it legally and politically, with all the possibilities that our action allows us, also from the legal field, because this outrage cannot be allowed, because this decision endangers public services’, as Antonio Sanz has stressed, who in this line has pointed out that services such as ‘education, health, social services and dependency’ will be ‘harmed’. Pioneering Malaga flamenco dance teacher ‘Conchita’ Zamora dies at the age of 70 in Rincón de la Victoria:
– While Malaga was enjoying the traditions and customs of the city’s August fair, one of its greatest supporters and regular participants, flamenco dancer Concha Zamora, died at the age of 70 in her home in Rincón de la Victoria. A great defender of the verdiales and malagueñas, and a tireless champion of the festive events, she was a pioneer in the teaching of Spanish dance in the province.

Spain’s new so called “Parity Law” is nothing of the sort:
– It was the first law approved by the Council of Ministers in this legislature and the last to receive the go-ahead from the Congress of Deputies before the summer. All the groups, except PP and Vox, gave the green light in July to the parity law promoted by the Ministry of Equality with the aim of breaking down obstacles to equal opportunities between men and women.
– The law includes the ‘principle of balanced presence’, which initially imposed a 60-40% ratio, no more than 60% male to a minimum 40% female representation, in all public administration bodies, as well as in the public-private sphere of public interest companies or the boards of professional associations.
– However, and this is a HUGE however, a change agreed to during the parliamentary process between the far-left Podemos and socialist-left PSOE, who hold a house majority, broke this parity in favour of females. Thus, while men will not be able to represent more than 60% in positions of power in public bodies or in the management of listed companies in the private sector, there will be no limit for females, so they can reach up to 100%, for example, in the Government, listed companies and bodies such as the Constitutional Court (TC) and the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), as long as it is proceedurally correct.
– {How in the world is that “parity”? It sounds more like revenge to me. They have replaced the validity of the meritocracy with popularity contests! More participation awards so the less talented don’t get their feelings hurt. How thoughtful. Sorry, this ain’t middle-school football. Feria Río Bermuza 2024- Canillas de Aceituno:
Fri – Sun, 23 – 25 August
– Friday 23 August the Fiestas will begin at 20:00h with the mass in honour of the patron saint of Río Bermuza and the procession of the Virgen de la Inmaculada and the Cristo del Chorrillo at 20:30h with musical accompaniment by the Municipal Band. At 22:00h the Fair will begin with a performance by the singer, DJ and entertainer Evelyn Ríos. At the same time, children will be able to enjoy a bouncy castle.
– Saturday 24th, the Feria de Día will open at 14:00h, when the Mayordomos will invite you to an Andalusian snack. From 17:00h the children’s entertainment will begin with face painting, games and many more surprises, while at 18:30h the bicycle and motorbike races are scheduled. At 21:00h the party continues with live music by Duo Golden Cuba (Video Link) and a bouncy castle for the little ones. From 00:00h the jury will choose the queen of the Fair and her ladies, while at 00:15h the new stewards will be chosen, closing the day at 00:30h with a stellar performance by the singer, DJ and entertainer Evelyn Ríos .
– Sunday at 13:30h the party will start with a performance by Miguel Botana, followed at 14:00h by the tasting of a delicious paella that will be offered to all participants. Finally, from 18:00h onwards, the 2024 Fair will present its closing activities.

Spanish police seize 13,000 bottles of counterfeit rum during raids in Andalucía: {Translation, summary}

Vélez-Málaga, Colmenar, Algarrobo and Sedella will offer 15 training courses of the Cultiva programme for young farmers: {Translation}

Rincón de la Victoria Golf Tournament will attract more than 100 golfers: {Translation, summary}

Man changes his sex to avoid jail for attacking his ex-partner in Sevilla: {Translation, summary}

In addition, he points out that there are precedents of judicial actions that ‘make it clear’ that men who change their sex ‘cannot avoid convictions for gender violence’, since the legal responsibilities that the person had before the registry rectification are maintained. These are the two Malaga towns named amongst the cheapest places to rent in Spain:
– The price of rent is continuing to skyrocket in Malaga province with it now costing more than 15 euros per square metre a month on average, new data shows. Nerja City Council launches a free camp for young people: {Translation}

EU Confirms Official Entry/Exit System Launch Date:
– In a speech at eu-LISA, the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, revealed that the EES would enter into operation on November 10, 2024. Even though it was previously announced by multiple media platforms that November 10 would be the launch date of the EES, this is the first time that the EU has officially confirmed its implementation date and set a target day.
– Once the EES becomes effective, Commissioner Johansson said that 700 million people travelling to Europe would be affected every year. At the same time, she emphasised that the system would ensure that 450 million Europeans would feel safer.
– The Entry/Exit System (EES) is an automated IT system that will register foreign travellers entering the territory of the EU for short stays, regardless of whether they are eligible for visa-free entry or not.
– The system will replace the current manual passport stamping and will register the traveller’s name, type of travel document, biometric data (their fingerprints and facial images), and the date and place of entry and exit from the EU. In addition to registering the entry and exit of travellers, the system will also record entry refusals.
– The main aim of the system is modernise border management, prevent irregular migration to the bloc, and protect European citizens, among others. The EES will also help identify over-stayers as well as those who attempt to enter the EU using forged documents.
– Once the EES launches, all foreigners will have to register into the system. The data of travellers will be stored in a safe database for three years. This means that travellers will not be required to undergo the registration process every time they enter and leave the bloc.

Belorado nuns busted for black market puppy mill: {Translation, summary}

Spaniards spent 5.6% more on their shopping basket in the last year- olive oil leads the spending list: {Translation}

– Purchases of fishery products were lower in the twelve months analysed (-1.8%), but their expenditure was 3.3% higher. Thus, there was a fall of 3.5% in the fish category due to lower consumption of both fresh and frozen fish, with decreases of 3.4% and 3.8%, respectively.
– The consumption of eggs intensified, with a growth of 4.4% in volume and 6% in value, as well as that of pulses (2.3% in volume and 4% in value), sugar or flour and semolina (2.4% and 3.6% in volume and 13.9% and 4.88% in value, respectively). Bread consumption, on the other hand, decreased by 2.8% over the last twelve months up to last June and the bill fell by 1.6%.
– In the exclusive analysis for the month of June this year, households reduced the volume demand for food and beverages for domestic supply by 1.1% compared to the same month last year. In value terms, purchases increased by 1.5% with the average price increasing by 2.6% in June alone. Ukraine behind Nord Stream pipeline sabotage, report claims, pundits express doubts:
– A report by the US outlet Wall Street Journal claims Kyiv concocted the plan to blow up the pipeline bringing Russian gas to Germany in May 2022, citing four anonymous Ukrainian military sources. A small Ukrainian crew disguised as a pleasure boat cruise was behind the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
– The scheme reportedly cost around $300,000 (€273,000) and involved a six-member crew on a small rented yacht. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy initially approved it before the US intelligence agency CIA caught wind and asked him to stop. The Ukrainian president ordered a halt but his commander-in-chief, Valeriy Zaluzhniy, went ahead with the operation anyway, the WSJ said.
– The WSJ article comes after German media reported that prosecutors had issued the first arrest warrant in their investigation into the Nord Stream attack. Stonehenge’s Altar Stone Is From Scotland Not Wales, Scientists Say:
– The six-tonne Altar Stone at the center of Stonehenge, the world’s most famous neolithic monument in southern England, is from northern Scotland, not southwest Wales, as previously thought.
– The Altar Stone, which sits at the center of Stonehenge’s iconic 5,000-year-old stone circle, is a 20-inch (50cm) thick sandstone block measuring 16×3 feet (5×1 meters). It lays flat in two pieces.
– “Our analysis found specific mineral grains in the Altar Stone are mostly between 1000 to 2000 million years old, while other minerals are around 450 million years old,” said Anthony Clarke, a PhD student from the School of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Curtin University in Perth, Australia, and lead author of a paper published in Nature this week. “This provides a distinct chemical fingerprint suggesting the stone came from rocks in the Orcadian Basin, Scotland.” That’s about 466 miles (750 kilometers) from Stonehenge.
– The discovery raises the question of exactly how the massive stone traveled that vast distance around 2600 BC. Many stones at Stonehenge are from Preseli, Wales, about 140 miles (225km) to the west.

First case of the more dangerous strain of MPOX found outside Africa:
– Sweden’s public health agency has recorded what it says is the first case of a more dangerous variant of mpox outside the African continent. The person became infected during a stay in an area of Africa where there is currently a major outbreak of mpox Clade 1, the agency said.
The news comes just hours after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the outbreak of mpox in parts of Africa was now a public health emergency of international concern.
– While Clade 2 did cause a public health emergency in 2022, it was relatively mild and some 300 cases have already been identified in Sweden. The Swedish public health agency said Clade 1 was likely to be linked to “a higher rise of a more severe course of disease and higher mortality”.

WHO declares mpox global health emergency:
– The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the mpox outbreak in parts of Africa a public health emergency of international concern.
– The highly contagious disease – formerly known as monkeypox – has killed at least 450 people during an initial outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
– It has now spread across parts of central and east Africa, and scientists are concerned about how fast a new variant of the disease is spreading and its high fatality rate.
– WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the potential for further spread within Africa and beyond “is very worrying”.
“A co-ordinated international response is essential to stop this outbreak and save lives,” he said.
– Mpox is transmitted through close contact, such as sex, skin-to-skin contact and talking or breathing close to another person. It causes flu-like symptoms, skin lesions and can be fatal, with four in 100 cases leading to death. Outbreaks can be controlled by preventing infections with vaccines, though these are usually only available for people at risk or those who have been in close contact with an infected person.
– A previous mpox public health emergency, declared in 2022, was caused by the relatively mild Clade 2. However, this time it is the far more deadly Clade 1 – which has killed up to 10% of those getting sick in previous outbreaks – that is surging.
– There was a change in the virus around September last year. Mutations led to an offshoot – called Clade 1b – that has since spread rapidly. This new variant has been labelled “the most dangerous yet” by one scientist.
– Since the start of the year, there have been more than 13,700 cases of mpox in the DR Congo, with at least 450 deaths. New Warning About Windows 11 Computer Set Ups:
– Fresh installs of Windows 11 version 24H2, including setting up a new computer, now have BitLocker device encryption enabled by default. It also requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account to complete the initial setup. You can’t use the device until the setup is complete.
BITLOCKER
– Device encryption is designed to improve the security of Windows machines by automatically enabling BitLocker encryption on the Windows install drive and backing up the recovery key to a Microsoft account or Entra ID.
– The feature could impact SSD performance on some devices. Tom’s Hardware tested this software version of BitLocker last year and found it could slow drives by up to 45 percent. Encryption also makes data recovery in the case of crashed systems or lost passwords very difficult, and often impossible. If you use encryption it is highly recommended you also do full backups regularly, to an external hard drive or a cloud storage account.
– This new encryption will have its own password-PIN, besides your log-in password/PIN. Accessing encrypted files or system files may require entering your BitLocker PIN, depending on choices you make during the BitLocker setup.
– You can disable BitLocker immediately after a fresh Win 11 install here.

INSTALLATION UPDATE
– Microsoft now requires you to have a Microsoft account in order to set up a new Windows 11 computer. As part of the setup it will require you to connect to the internet. Then it will demand you enter your Microsoft username and password to continue. With a Microsoft account linked device, you have allowed Microsoft complete access to everything on it.
– There is a work-around, that allows you to setup a new computer without a Microsoft account and maintain some degree of privacy, using what is known as a “local account”, however Microsoft has made some changes recently that make this task complicated, and the method varies depending on the device being setup. You can find videos on Youtube that demonstrate a few methods. Be sure to only view new videos, the methods used until this Spring no longer work. This is probably best left to a tech who does it on a regular basis.
– It is also possible to setup a new Win 11 install with a Microsoft account, then add a local account with a different user name, and then delete the account linked to Microsoft.
– If you use a local account, and you later sign into any Google service, like Gmail or Chrome browser, your computer will automatically convert your Local account to a Microsoft account.
– If privacy is your concern, use a local account, and quit using any Google services. When I set up new computers for security conscious clients, I always tell them to bring me the device without ever having powered it up. That way I can control the initial Win 11 installation: make it a “local account”, turn off BitLocker & install a browser option to Chrome. In this way we avoid as much Microsoft snooping as possible.
– If I was going to buy a new computer, I’d wait until next Spring, when the new Win 12 computers will hit the market. After that we anticipate Win 13 to be released in 2028. New Win 12 computers will have advanced processors that will be updatable to Win 13. A new Win 11 computer will be updatable to Win 12, but may not be Win 13 compatible.
