EU Election News

BBC 2AM 27May19- UK European elections 2019: Brexit Party dominates as Tories and Labour suffer.
The Brexit Party has taken the lead in the UK European election results, with the pro-EU Lib Dems coming second.
The Conservatives and Labour have suffered heavy losses, with the former heading for less than 10% of the vote. Overall, out of 64 MEPs declared, Mr Farage’s party has won 28, the Lib Dems 15, Labour 10, Greens seven, the Tories three and Plaid Cymru one.

Spain’s Socialists win big in EU vote: With more than 95 percent of votes counted, government spokeswoman Isabel Celaa announced the Socialist Party had come first with close to 33 percent, followed by the conservative Popular Party which won just over 20 percent.
Former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont, who is now living in exile in Belgium won a seat as an MEP, so did his former deputy Oriol Junqueras currently, currently jailed on remand in Spain and on trial with 11 others for his role in staging the illegal referendum on independence, he won a seat as an MEP as well as being elected to Spain’s national parliament.

Tech Tips by DoctorLaptop

Windows 7 Update Problem Latest Info: Until the dust settles with this Processor Chip Threat fiasco I recommend all Windows 7 users turn off Automatic Updates. Holding off for 4 or 8 weeks on updates won’t be a problem, that will give time for a “proper” fix; the current panic response fix is poorly conceived. I have had a dozen calls in the past 3 days where user’s Win 7 computers have had big problems after attempting to do the recent batch of updates, which include the processor patch I previously warned about. There are 2 problems occurring. One, if the update installs, the computer is now very slow, as if you are on a slow internet connection. Two, the computer tries to restart itself after the update, or tells you to restart it, but that leads to a startup failure/restart loop and endless error messages. Problem #1 has no remedy and as of now cannot be undone! If you have Problem #2 try turning it off and on a few times, waiting 5 minutes between restarts. You will probably have to force the shutdowns by holding down the poser button 5 secs.,  something I normally warn against; in this case there is no alternative since it’s stuck in a restart loop with no access to on-screen shutdown buttons. If it still won’t start you’ll need a Win 7 install dvd/usb media to boot from to  run recovery tools. I can fix Problem #2 for you if necessary. Intel Processor Chip “Security” Fix That Slows Your Computer 40% – Update:
Info is slowly coming out.
-Note this threat is only a problem with Intel processors, not AMD or ARM.
-Apple says it has released it’s version of the “undesirable” chip patch in Mojave 10.14.5 and Safari updates last week for Apple devices but provided no list of involved models that I could find.
-This patch can not be undone.
I previously explained that this so-called security patch for Windows 7 era computers  can slow your computer up to 40%. Computers that shipped with Win 8/10 are not involved. Microsoft and Apple are trying to play it down without sharing much real info, saying only some users will be affected. Deeper research reveals the fix involves disabling a feature called hyperthreading. This is the very breakthru feature that expanded processor capacity to far greater levels than ever before; it allowed Windows XP to grow thru Vista into Windows 7, with it’s greater chip capacity requirements. Installing this fix is sending your processor’s performance back to 2005 standards! In my opinion this patch has nothing to do with protecting the vast majority of users from a threat. From studying the limited amount of patch code Microsoft has made available I believe this fix involves a threat only “in-house networked” business computer systems need be concerned with. In plain terms, it allows low level workers in an office of networked computer stations to access their supervisor’s computers without a password. I saw nothing to address any internet based threats. Turning off hyperthreading to fix internal network security problems is like pulling half the spark plugs from your car’s engine to prevent your kid from borrowing it without permission, when all you really need to do is change the garage door lock. I suggest holding off on applying this security patch update until more is known.

NO POSTING OF OBSOLETE ELECTRONICS FOR SALE! In order to protect the less tech savvy buyers, who expect fully operational devices, I will NOT post obsolete items, even if labelled as “obsolete” or “with limited functions”. This will also apply to computers running Windows 7 when it  becomes obsolete 14 January 2020. Those units need to be upgraded to Windows 10 (if supported for the upgrade), or else changed to Linux, to be offered for sale here after the January 14th Windows 7 expiration date. I will not be accepting ads saying “has Win 7 but could be upgraded to…” after 14 January 2020. If you have a Win 7 computer you are considering selling, I suggest you do so this summer/fall. Don’t submit ads for any device with limited functions, that are no longer supported for updates, or cannot run current versions of apps. The Editor’s decision is final, there will be no drawn out discussions, or replies to demands for documentation, regarding obsolete items. -Ed.

Possible fraud regarding Nerja water treatment: Some local politicians are being investigated for possible fraud, as Nerja residents have been charged for sewage treatment on their water bills since 2011, despite the treatment plant never having been completed.
A magistrate dealing with the case, Laura Crossa Gil, says that the first judge in the case will be the local elections on 26 May, when many of those politicos being investigated will be hoping that uninformed Nerja residents, who still don’t have a working treatment plant, will be voting for them despite the ongoing fiasco.

OnLine Scam News: By now we have all heard about the scam emails that claim the sender hacked your webcam and has naughty pics of you, and demands payment not to send copies to all your email contacts. Some scammers in Spain have taken this scam to a new level by incorporating “catfishing”. Catfishing is a type of deceptive activity where a person creates a fake social networking presence, or fake identity on a social network account, for attention seeking, to create exploitable fake friendships,  bullying/blackmailing, gaining access to your Friends List or as a romance scam.
Spanish police have arrested 23 people accused of belonging to a criminal organization carrying out sexual extortion online. The suspects allegedly made more than €100,000 from their victims across 24 Spanish provinces.
The group are claimed to have lured their victims in to visiting live sex-chat sites before blackmailing them for money with threats of telling their families what they had done.
Messages from the gang allegedly contained phrases including ‘€600 if you do not want your wife or anyone to find out.’ Police claim the group even threatened to injure victims or their family members if they did not pay out, using messages including, ‘you’re going to pay one way or another.’
The first case came to light in February 2018 and Police claim to have so far received around 80 complaints from victims since.
While getting caught up in such a scam is embarrassing, never pay on-line blackmailers, ignore them, don’t reply. If they have your home address or if you feel the slighest bit actually threatened, report it to the Guardia Civil Internet Crime Division asap. Don’t delete the emails or messages until the police have copies of the original emails. These emails contain hidden metadata that will aid the investigation. The metadata is lost if you only copy/paste the text of the emails. If you want to retain some anonymity yet still register a report of the incident, which helps investigators, here is the online place to report EU Internet Crime. Also note this is a big reason to be very careful how you use social media and to NOT accept Friend Requests from strangers.  For example, blackmailers can scan your Facebook/Snapchat/etc to compile a list of your friends/contacts. The blackmailer can use this list as evidence to make the threat appear credible, as if they have hacked your computer for your Contacts when in fact they have not had access to your computer, just your public social media. More fake proof of a hack is collected from hacked password dumps sold on the darkweb. Just because a blackmailer knows a few of the passwords you used 5 yrs ago is no reason to believe he’s actually hacked your computer. Old Gmail, Yahoo, DropBox, Faceboox etc data breaches exposed all those old passwords long ago.
