Daniel Torres Quartet at Ventana Abierta Jazz Club: First Statement
We say goodbye to the jazz season with the presentation of Statement One, the first album of the saxophonist from Malaga Daniel Torres. In this record, Daniel, whose musical training took him from Malaga to Barcelona, Amsterdam, New York and Toronto, has brought together a group of major international jazz figures (including the famous Indonesian pianist Sri Hanuraga “Aga”) to perform his original compositions. Some of the members of this newly created group have worked with great artists such as Sonny Rollins, Brad Mehldau and Lee Konitz.

Recommendations

URGENT UPDATE to Thursday’s Windows 7 Update/Patch info post “Microsoft Warns of a Monster Computer Bug”, dubbed ZombieLoad. The latest reports warn that if you apply the update patch now being offered by Windows Update you may experience a 40% decrease in processor capacity! Do you want your computer to operate 40% slower? ZombieLoad raises a new threat: To lock down and secure a system from this attack fully, you have to disable Intel’s hyper-threading. That’s why Google just disabled hyperthreading on Intel Chromebooks. Newer computers that shipped with Win 8 or higher are not at risk. Since we are close to the end of Service for Windows 7 in mid January I am not willing to lose almost half my processor capacity for a patch that will be irrelevant in 7 months. The patch is irreversible, even a full system reinstall will not undo it. It will thereafter always be a slow computer even if you install Linux on it! Ruined! Personally I quit doing Win 7 updates in January; the last year of every version of Windows has been full of annoyances. I suggest if you plan to keep using your Win 7  computer after January, either with Win 10 or Linux, immediately turn off Windows Updates and instead do a full system scan with your anti-virus weekly.  This will also prevent you from getting some (not all) End-of-Service warning popups as we approach January’s end of Win 7. Yes, there are rumors that MS will offer a patch to fix this patch’s slowdown effects, but it is far more desirable to have an unpatched processor than a double patched processor. Wood Fired Oven Cookery Course: Join us at a superb mountain location in the Alpujarras for a full one day wood fired oven cookery course. Great ‘hands on’ experience using a large wood fired oven. TECH ALERT! Back to back “I told you so” moments, 2 threats in 2 days – Tech Editorial by Naythan, Editor
In yesterday’s issue I revealed that the “supposedly encrypted, high security” WhatsApp app does in fact have a code flaw I had predicted over 2 years ago that exposes ALL your data to hackers! To quote Chris Coulter, Tech VP at Blackberry’s Security division, “Myself and millions of others inadvertently put all that at risk by blindly trusting the app. This is certainly one to take seriously.” Well this guy is obviously not a  DigameXtra reader or he’d have expected this! (Editor takes a bow.)
Now here we go again. I told readers that as the end of Windows 7 support approaches (15Jan20) Microsoft will try to force all users of pre-Win 10 systems to upgrade to Win 10 and abandon older computers that won’t run Win 10. In today’s Wall St. Journal:
“Microsoft Warns of a Monster Computer Bug, in a Week of Them” The company has patched the flaw but says it is ‘highly likely’ it will wind up being exploited by malicious software. Microsoft Corp. took the unusual step of warning that a computer bug it has now patched could be used by a cyber weapon similar to the WannaCry worm, which spread across the globe two years ago. The flaw affects Windows 7 (and Vista) and Windows Server 2008. It also affects Windows 2003 and Windows XP- older versions of Windows that MS doesn’t usually patch (after they become obsolete). But in a sign of the severity of the bug, MS released XP and WIN 2003 patches as well.” So here comes the push I warned about. Soon upgrade popup warnings will appear, trying to scare/trick you into upgrading to Win 10, like happened when Win 10 was first released. More events to encourage us to abandon our older computers will follow, likely to involve older processors MS will declare no longer trustworthy. However Linux will run fine on these not-safe-for-Windows computers, so don’t throw them away, upgrade them to a superior operating system! Several flavors of Linux are so Windows 7 like you won’t notice much difference doing the basics.

WhatsApp Alert: All Users need to immediately update their WhatsApp app. The hacker attack I have been warning about on this supposedly secure service has just been confirmed. Because this attack exploits code flaws, the problem has always been there, and we are just now hearing about it being. So there is no telling for how long it may have been collecting your data and info. The spyware exploiting this flaw is capable of trawling through calls, texts and other data, activating the phone’s camera and microphone and performing other malicious activities. Discovered and announced this week by an Israeli company that designs and sells these type of hack tools to nation states for official use. Nothing suspicious about that now is there? Here’s the fix
-If you’re an iPhone user:
Open the App Store on your mobile device
Hit the tab “Updates” along the bottom right
If your WhatsApp has not been updated, a button will appear reading “Update.” Tap and allow your device to install the latest version.
If your app has been updated, there will be no update button, just one that reads “Open.” No further action is required.
If you have difficulty finding WhatsApp, search for it using the search tab on the bottom right
Ensure you are running the latest version: 2.19.51
-If you’re Team Android:
Open the Google Play Store on your mobile device
Tap the menu
Open the “My Apps & Games” tab
Look for the “Updates Pending” section. If your WhatsApp requires an update, it will be listed there. Tap “Update” and allow your device to install the latest version.
If your app has already been updated, there will be no update button, just one that reads “Open.” No further action is required.
If you have difficulty finding WhatsApp, search for it in the Play Store

Ants, Mozzies and Roaches: For the people who want to eliminate all moving insects from their house and surrounding areas Saturday Digamextra. Can I remind you that we live in a highly agricultural area where the local people relying on all pollinating insects for their crops EG. Mangos, Avocados, Olives etc. I understand you don’t like Mozzies, Ants or Cockroaches most people don’t and by all means blitz inside your home, but please be aware that the insecticide that kills all these things unfortunately also kills our pollinators. For ants use Ant powder, Mozzies a repellent up here in Frigiliana they spray the drains for Cockroaches I can’t say for Nerja, let’s all be aware of how we use these insect sprays and keep our environment friendly. The Torrox Spanish History Group
Talk by Joan Fallon on the 14th May at 11am at El Parquesol, El Morche, on “The Golden Age of Moorish Spain”. The talk will take place at El Parquesol at 11am on Tuesday the 14th May. El Parquesol is situated in El Morche. Plenty of parking on the opposite side of the road to the restaurant.

There will be a small fee of 1 euro in order to pay the restaurant for the use of their facilities. Donations are also welcome as the group, which is a charity and which is free to join, are in need of various items such a projector and screen so that our talks can be backed up by visual aids.

A Dirty Internet Trick Becoming Ubiquitous
We are all seeing these annoying popups when we visit websites. Cookie permission requests and ad blocker turn off demands mostly. They want you to allow them and all their advertisers to track all your web activity, supposedly to remember page preferences as well as provide ads that will be targeted to your interests. That’s rubbish, they collect data to sell it, they can easily do those other beneficial tasks without tracking everything you do. But that’s not what this is about.
These popups typically offer you a few choices, to opt in, opt out, and a close the popup button. Here is the problem, They are purposely building these popups for an 80% zoomed screen, so when you view it on your normal 100% zoom the opt out and close buttons are hidden off the exposed area of the page. It appears your only option is to accept the settings they are pushing on you in order to proceed. They do this intentionally to force your choice! Highly unethical in my book. If you want to access these “hidden” buttons you need to zoom out your view making the page smaller, exposing more area.
To ZOOM in or out hold down the CTRL key, then use the + or – keys to shrink/expand the view. There are also other zoom controls, depending on the browser you use.
So if you ever run into a situation where there appears to be no way out, no way to close a page, etc., remember this ZOOM trick.

Editor’s Note: Scams on the rise: From what I am reading, and hearing from Readers and computer clients, there is an uptick in scammer activity of all kinds.  Some that are common-

  1. Calls, texts, FB posts, emails soliciting you with offers of cheap mobile/internet/phone services.  If they contacted you first, proceed with caution! A reader emailed me a tale of how a friend was swindled on a cheap new mobile plan, for example.  If you are interested, find the service’s website, do some research to see if it looks legit, then you contact them with the contact info from the site.
  2. Fake inspection/repair visits. Fake gas and power inspectors are the most common. This can be an awkward situation for single women in rural areas, when a stranger with maybe an Endessa tee shirt or a laminated badge knocks on the door. How do you know if it’s legit? Should you let him in? How do you verify the ID? Plan ahead! Have a strategy in place. Keep the gas and power company’s numbers on speed dial, so you can verify the ID and visit is legit. Don’t accept a phone number they provide on the possibly dodgy ID. Keep copies of your gas inspections handy. If you are not due for a re-inspection be suspicious. Showing them an up to date inspection receipt will send them on their way if they are legit. If it’s a scam they may try to insist they need to change your regulator, or some such excuse to get inside. At this point it may be a good idea to introduce your largest dog into the conversation.
  3. Fake Computer Calls. A caller says he is from Microsoft, says your comp is infected, requires you install a remote control program to allow him to fix the problem, and demands a fee to do so in some cases. Microsoft will NEVER call you unless you contact them 1st and you have requested a callback.
  4. Purse snatching and car break ins are on the rise in the Mijas area according to the SUR.
  5. Counterfeit Goods: Be careful buying premium labelled merchandise, lots of fakes out there: clothes&accessories, appliances&electronics, car parts, drugs&supplements, etc… Oh yea, summer will bring a wave of phony euro notes too.
