Atsuko Shimada Trio Jazz Concert: November 23th. Atsuko Shimada Trio formed by Atsuko Shimada (piano), José Luis Gómez (drums) and Rafa Sibajas (double bass). Atsuko Shimada trained at some of the most prestigious institutions, yamaha music school of japan and sapporo otani junior collage of music, continued his studies at the famous Berklee Music college in Boston where he graduated in 2004 with honors. He has played at festival such as the Brecon Jazz Club in Wales, the Porthcawl Jazz Festival and in parallel with his career deverlops an intense pedagogical works: he taught at yamaha music School of Japan and nowadays has been teaching since 2006 at the Gibraltar Academy of Music and Performing Arts.

Urgent foster home for senior dog: This is beautiful Knobby who is a senior dog 8.5yrs old. His owner is seriously ill and cannot look after him. We urgently need a foster home till after Xmas. He is very friendly and well socialised so will be fine with other dogs. He is currently stuck in a kennel and very unhappy. He weighs 25kg and is 55cm in height so medium sized. Ellen does alterations at a very reasonable price as well as making clothes from scratch. She has just altered five items for me: three were straightforward, one a bit more difficult and the last very tricky, involving a lot of work. I was delighted with the end results.

Parking Permit: Getting a Spanish Parking Permit is harder than sending a man to the Moon but having said that you can be fined for using disabled bays even on private roads. You regularly see Police issuing fines in Shopping Centre Car Parks.
I have just had mine and the whole process took some 20 months. This I am assured was quick. You can only get help for filling in forms and setting up concessions etc, like not paying yearly car tax. I used Kaye tel 650102640 who was very good
First you need to register with the Social Department at your local Ayuntamiento . They will give you the application form or you can download it along with a English translation. I used El Morche as its easy to park outside. They have a direct line 952538010 for appointments and speak good english.
You then get an interview with a Social Worker who will asses you and recommend you need help. You need all your medical records and (min 5 years) residency paperwork etc.
Plus you need a recommendation from your doctor to add to this as it is the Doctor who refers you to the Social Worker in theory.
They send off all this to Malaga for you.
Then you wait nearly a year for a Medical and Social assessment in Malaga. You are seen by a doctor who will rate your disability to various levels. Following this you move on to the Social Worker who also assesses your disability and will explain what help is available with what levels you are likely to be assigned. You need 65% disability for Parking Permit and when they have done this you can get a Decision Letter stating what levels you have reached. This took 5 months to arrive after many phone calls.
If like me you attend in a wheelchair with no use of legs you only get 70%.
To save time the Social Worker will apply for the Parking Permit for you in advance if it is obvious she can see you have reached the necessary 65% disability prior to decision.
With the Decision Letter you get a card stating your level gained that you can use to obtain disability benefits.
The Parking Permit arrived about a month after Decision Letter.
It does allow you to park in disabled bays only. You also must pay parking charges as normal.

Choir Christmas concerts: Local choir “CoraXalia” (Director: Eusebio Pita) has the pleasure of inviting you to two free Christmas concerts,

It’s Fiesta Friday Curry Night at Meson Mudejar (Calle Alamos 6, Archez):
It’s Curry Night again this Friday (and every Friday) at the area’s first plant-based (vegan) restaurant, Meson Mudejar, a couple of kilometres below Canillas de Albaida in the quaint and authentic small white village of Archez. David and Kinga prepare international, handmade international varieties of delicious plant-based dishes. Meson Mudejar also features theme nights like Friday’s Curry Nights when local musicians offer entertainment and there’s a special curry menu at 15€ for a three-course meal, opening at 19:00. The menu includes: starter is onion fritter (Pakora). Main course: three curries to chose from—mushroom and peas in spicy coconut sauce, black gram lentils in tomato sauce or chickpea curry (takes a day and a half to prepare). Dessert: fudgy coconut balls. All sauces are hand designed, all plant-based, all very tasty and healthy. And the ambience is magic and rustic and real. Torrox Spanish History Group: The Torrox Spanish History Group enjoyed their first day trip out to the Medina Azahara. We had a very modern 55 seater coach with an excellent driver. The scenery along the way was spectacular. We arrived at the Medina c10.30am and saw the excellent video as well as the museum both complimented by good English translations. We then took the shuttle bus to the ruins. We were also very lucky with the weather, it was a bright and sunny day. Bearing in mind it had been raining the day before and rain was forecast for the day after! We then went into the city of Cordoba for a well earned lunch.
The Torrox Spanish History Group meets every first Tuesday of the month at El Parquesol in El Morche at 11am.
The aim of the group is for members to explore both the local History as well as history on a much wider scale. In that way we can better understand the existing social, political, religious and economic conditions of the Spanish People.
Our next meeting will be on the 4th December. Keith (Rockall) will complete his series of talks on the Romans and I will give a brief overview of the life of Federico Garcia Lorca before a more in depth talk on the poet in March.
In January we will be taking an historical walk around the old part of Malaga.
Our February talk will be on the “Spanish History of Spices”
There will be further coach tours in the New Year. A trip around the Vega in Granada to where Lorca was born; where he grew up and where he was shot is planned as well as a trip to Italica in Sevilla the birthplace of the Roman Emperors Trajan and Hadrian.

Disabled Parking Permits: Can someone please enlighten me as to the correct procedure to obtain a permit? I am now crippled with arthritis in the knees, can only walk a very short distance, and having gone to see a specialist at the Hospital, and receiving a 100 euro fine for parking on a disabled space, decided that enough is enough! Enquired from my GP, who didn’t seem to know much, beyond that one had to go to the local Ayuntamiento, and thence to Malaga. But there must be a simpler way, or at least someone who will do what is necessary for a fee. If anyone can assist with the necessary info, I shall be most grateful. Cookery Workshop events for November:
Spanish Tapas Cookery Workshop on Saturday 24th November and Pasta Making Workshop on Friday 30th November at Casa Montes Negros, organic farm near Trapiche.
Join us on Saturday 24th, when we will be preparing a variety of traditional Spanish dishes from the north to the south of Spain. Through the dishes offered on the menu, we will be exploring the main ingredients and spices used in Spanish cookery.
On Friday 30th, we will be learn about making pasta from scratch, from making the dough and rolling it out to your desired shape, to creating delicious fillings for ravioli.
A fun day out for both experienced cooks who fancy a great day out with like-minded foodies, or new cooks wanting to learn some basic recipes.
The workshop starts at 10.30 and finishes at around 4 p.m. and includes all the ingredients, lunch at the beautiful mountain finca in the foothills of La Maroma mountain, and your folder of recipes to take home. Cost 30 euros.

Rafa and Martha urgently needing a home: These two beautiful cats were rescued several years ago in Riogordo. Sadly their lovely owner has passed away after a devastating short illness. Rafa, is a black and white neutered male and is 8 years old. He is a very friendly, loving and calm cat. Martha is a ginger neutered female and is 7 years old. Martha very timid and shy and relies 100% on Rafa. Both these cats are looking for a new home where they can carry on being together. They have already lost their adoptive mum, they can’t lose each other as well.

Book signing by local author: Local author John Hardy will be selling signed copies of his books at the Christmas Market at La Vaqueria, Benamargosa from 12 till 4 on Saturday 17th November. All the books will be available including:
‘Malaga Mysteries’, ‘Twisted Tales’, ‘East Side Stories’ and ‘Death in the Sun’ – these are short stories of crime and mystery set in this part of Spain, the UK and worldwide. Two of them are available in German and Spanish.

Music in the Mountains present the opera ‘Dido and Aeneas’: Opera Event A rare opportunity to enjoy a semi professional opera can be enjoyed next week in our region. The cultural association ‘Music in the Mountains’ present the baroque opera ‘Dido and Aeneas’ by Henry Purcell, performed in the original language, English. Venues:
-Teatro Calderon in Motril, Wednesday and Thursday November 21st and 22nd at 20.30
-Teatro Villa Cultural in Nerja, Friday November 23rd at 20.30
-Teatro Augustin Martín Zaragoza in Orgiva, Saturday 24th November at 20.30
-There will also be a concert performance of the opera in the church of Cañar in the Alpujarras on Sunday 25th November at 20.30. This is a short opera, just over an hour’s length, but has been described as the most beautiful opera ever written in the English language. Entrance is free but we ask for donations to cover the cost of mounting this project. Because there is no entrance charge then we do not have a system for reserving seats, so if you want to be sure of a place then we advise you to arrive in good time.

Just got back from England (skies so grey it’s like living in a giant Tupperware box) to find my rented Art Studio up for sale. The mice have already been evicted. I’m next. 60-odd original paintings and prints need new homes. The alternative doesn’t bear thinking about.
So here’s what I’m going to do: This Saturday the 17th, the studio doors will be open for the last time, and anyone can go in, point to a work and name their own price. I won`t be haggling. There’s a couple of pieces of nicely renovated furniture in there as well, and the chance to sip a little something as you peruse. Email for more pics.

DoctorLaptop’s Internet News – Sick and Tired of Cookie Policy Popups on so many sites?: Many websites you visit now open with a GRPR warning message ( General Data Protection Regulation 88 pages of unintelligible legal jargon) covering most of the screen. You must agree to all kinds of data collecting, tracking and 3rd party cookies to proceed, or you can try to opt out. And even if you go thru the laborious process of changing the settings they offer to opt out, these popups typically return the next day as if you never opted out. I believe that do this intentionally to wear you down so you eventually agree to all the spying. They claim they need the info to ” provide you the best experience” but that’s disputable; in reality many sell it in a variety of ways to finance the free content they provide site visitors. Personally, if the site is packed with ads I don’t feel they should need to collect and sell my data. Other sites not wanting to deal with the added expense or annoyance just popup a message that the site is not available in the EU.  There are ways around this, but I am forbidden from including instructions here by the WordPress User Agreement. However, while a crackdown on sharing links is on the horizon for EU internet users,  for now I can still provide a link to an article in plain English that explains the situation and some tricks to minimize the hassle. GDPR article in The Guardian and this article explains the implications GDPR will have on your internet experience in the very near future, GRPR explained in Wired magazine. Curry Night at Meson Mudejar (Calle Alamos 6, Archez):
It’s Curry Night again this Friday (and every Friday) at the area’s only plant-only (vegan) restaurant located in the quaint and authentic small white village of Archez, Meson Mudejar, only a couple of winding kilometres below Canillas de Albaida. Curry Night, starting at 19:00, offers a full three course meal for 15€. Plus local musicians adding additional spice to the night.
