American Roots @ Danny Boys Bar and Kitchen: Thursday 4-6pm. This Thursday sees the first of our summer afternoon live music shows. We’re so pleased to get Pablo and Dani playing for us. These guys pack out venues all around Costa del Sol, and they’re coming to our terrace at 4pm this Thursday! Ladies and Gents we give you “American Roots” on our terrace.

Art Classes: The Torrox Pueblo Art Group starts its summer session on Wednesday 1st May to Wednesday 3rd July. We operate from La Casa Restaurant in the main Square, Torrox Pueblo from 10.30am – 1.30pm. We are a very sociable group of various nationalities and abilities and it is ideal for the complete beginner or the more established artist. It’s so satisfying to see how the groups artwork has improved over the years and it’s such a fascinating subject to get involved with. We cover most subjects, Portraiture, Landscapes, Still Life, Animals, Pets and more, it’s left up to the individual to choose. The mediums we use are Oil, Acrylic, Watercolour, Charcoal and Pencil.

Use “Lite Apps” to speed up your Android phone/tablet: Due to age or low RAM or slow processor speed your Android phone may seem to be performing slower than you would like. Most Android users already know to turn off backround apps and bluetooth if not currently in use, to conserve power resources and the amount of RAM being used. What else can you do to speed things up?  To boost the performance of your Android phone try installing the lightweight versions of your mobile applications (apps). If you are using the standard heavy weight version of the Facebook app in a phone with low RAM the app may be very slow. It is probably better to replace it with a lighter version of the same app, Facebook Lite, in this case. It is designed to work with minimal resources, even on old-school 2G connections, and on a phone with only 1GB of RAM. There are similar “lite” versions of most popular apps available in the Store. The Dogs Need You!: Are you getting bored sitting in the sun and would like to do something worthwhile? At Tail Dog Refuge we are looking for help. We have over 100 dogs and pups to care for and not enough volunteers.
If you have a few hours spare a couple of times a week, we need help with
-dealing with the washing and general cleaning in the house
-help with cleaning the kennels
-help with repairs and tiling
-dog walking
-driving and help with furniture collection
The kennels are conveniently situated near Lidl on Torrox Costa and 5 minutes walk from the bus. There is also car parking available.
We are looking for local people who can make a regular commitment.
If you prefer shop work we also need help in both of our shops. Hours are 10.00 to 14.00.

-Turn your iPhone into a large, rectangular magnifying glass. Great for when you can’t find your reading glasses! The ability to zoom in on real-world images might prove helpful in all kinds of situations, such as when you’re squinting at a menu in a dimly-lit restaurant. To use it, go to Settings, open General, choose Accessibility, and then tap Magnifier and turn the feature on. -Check that a surface is level. iOS has an extra built-in app hidden behind the Compass. Load up the Compass, then swipe left, you’ll find a spirit level tool. Use it to make sure your pictures are hanging correctly and your DIY is up to scratch. An iPhone may not be as precise as a dedicated spirit level, but it’s very handy. Either use the spirit level with your phone laid out flat or with it perched on its side in either portrait or landscape mode. Spanish Tapas Cookery Workshop on Wednesday 24th April: Join us for our Spanish Tapas Cookery Workshop on Wednesday 24th April at Casa Montes Negros, organic farm near Trapiche. Using local and seasonal ingredients we will be exploring a variety of Spanish tapas dishes from all over Spain. A fun day out for both experienced cooks and novices. Rainy Weather Activities: I’m hoping some creative readers might have some suggestions for visiting, adult guests. All of my planned activities for a week’s visit involved outdoor activities. Gmail Users Alert: Google Knows What You’ve Purchased by Scanning Your Emails. Twitter users have discovered that Gmail is scanning email receipts to link non-Google purchases to a user’s Google account. Google uses this data to list individual purchases inside a user’s Google account and also shows additional information for some purchases. It’s not clear how long Google has been collecting this purchase data or how to opt-out of this data collection. The data shows individual purchases and supporting information for some purchases which can include subscription details and estimated fulfillment times for physical goods. Google says that the sources for this purchase data include “order receipts or confirmations received in Gmail”. It’s unclear how long Google has been collecting this data but one Twitter user claims their account shows five years of purchase data.
You can currently view this “Purchases” data inside your own Google account by selecting the “Manage purchases” option under the “Payments and subscriptions” section of myaccount.google.com. You can also see the source for each purchase by selecting “Info” and then “Where’s this from?”
Overall, this “Purchases” data revelation is yet another stark reminder of just how much intimate information Google collects about us on auto-pilot.
So, if you’re not happy with this data collection and want to switch to an email provider that respects your privacy, try Protonmail.com. It doesn’t scan or mine your emails or personal data.

Windows 7: How to stop the new “End of Service” nag screens & How to extend your Windows 7 support for an extra 3 years.
-Starting April 18th Microsoft is rolling out updates that will pop-up a warning message that Support for Windows 7 is ending soon (14Jan2020). This is another annoying nag message like when they wanted everyone to do the free upgrade to Win 10 a few years ago. To prevent it do not download or install Windows Update KB4493132. If you are already getting the messages, wait till one appears and look at the lower left corner. There you can check the box to choose “don’t remind me again”. See pic, click to enlarge.

-Windows 7 ESU (Extended Security Updates) is coming, an extension of Win 7 support for up to 3 years. Those of you who follow my tips will remember I said Microsoft has changed their biz model from selling a product to selling a subscription service. This is where it starts. Microsoft will stop providing security updates or support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020. Starting this month Microsoft will be selling the ESU add-on to extend the life of your Win 7, but only the Pro/Ultimate/Enterprise versions of Win 7, not Home or Home Premium versions. The starting price of ESU is $25 or $50 per device per year. The cost will be doubled in the second year, and then doubled again in the third year. So in the last year, you need to pay $100 or $200 per device for the support. ESU is not intended for the casual home user at these prices, it’s more for power users and businesses who are running expensive Win 7 only software. If you need to upgrade your Win 7 Home or Home Premium to Win Pro so you can get ESU, they will sell you that too. With the ESU for Windows 7, the covered PCs will be able to run and continue to receive updates for Office 365 ProPlus and the applications installed locally and bundled with Office 365: Outlook, Excel, Word, and so on. Now you see why selling services beats selling products.
A note to cheaters: the ESU is sold per device so sharing from one comp to another is not supposed to be possible, but someone may figure out a way eventually.

A total of 148 flights, affecting around 10,000 passengers, have been cancelled during the first three days of six planned days of strike action by pilots in Spain.
The strike by SEPLA (Spanish Union of Airline Pilots) members has forced Air Nostrum, a franchisee of Iberia, to cancel flights on April 15, 16 and 17 (see full list in source article).

Torrox Spanish History Group: The Torrox Spanish History Group enjoyed a day out on 10th April visiting the Monastery of St. Isidoro. The Monasterio de San Isidoro del Campo was founded by Alfonso Pérez de Guzmán and María Coronel Alonso in 1301. We spent several hours there and then went onto Italica where we had some lunch at one of the local restaurants before spending several hours walking around the city, afterwards we made our way to the Plaza Espana in Sevilla for a short visit. Italica was the birthplace of three Roman emperors – Trajan, Hadrian, and Theodosius and was one of the earliest Roman settlements in Spain, it was founded in 206 BC by Publius Cornelius Scipius to house soldiers who had been wounded in battle. The 25,000 seater amphitheatre, which was one of the largest in the Roman Empire, has partly survived. The central pit was used for animal cages, bears and wild boar, during gladiatorial combats.
Also five large houses of prosperous families have been excavated, some with well-preserved, colourful mosaics, including floors with exquisite design of birds, Neptune, and the planets.
-On May 14th The Torrox Spanish History Group are are fortunate enough to have the well known author Joan Fallon giving a talk on “The Golden Age of Moorish Spain. We normally meet every first Tuesday of the week but for May we will be meeting on the second Tuesday instead.
Joan will be bringing her books along for your to purchase as well as her latest one called the The Apothecary set in 11th century Malaga.

Follow-up to the plea for a cat trap: I want to extend my deepest thanks to Naythan for posting the plea for the cat trap so promptly.
A very professional trap was loaned to me by TAILS TORROX, and once set up, the Mother cat to the rescued kittens was promptly trapped. She is now being held in containment with the objective of taming her to the point where she will be trusting enough to handle so that she might be brought to the get clinic in La Caleta to be sterilized.
Unfortunately her kittens, who are now being hand raised and fed a cat milk formula which had been donated by a compassionate cat lover, will not be able to be reunited with their mother, as it looks to risky to their lives to do so. They are doing well though, and will continue to be reared by hand until weaned, at which time they will be put up for adoption.
A sincere Thank You to the Digamites who also came forward with the offer of a trap, and to those others concerned enough to reply to the post with good contact numbers of rescue groups in Torrox, Torre Del Mar and Competa. You know who you are.
Finally I want to thank my friend Helen of Sayalonga, who took time out of her day to drive me to Torrox to pick up the cage.
