Driving Licence Renewal – Response

I can’t agree with yesterdays letter re driving licence renewal. Everyone is obliged to have a medical from youngsters through to “oldies”, though the intervals vary with age . The reason Clinica Rincon deal with them is because they do the medical and complete the form online for you at the same time.

I’ve got a feeling I know the answer to this, but….. We hired one of the tiniest (and tinniest) cars this week from Marbesol, and were charged for a full tank of petrol at 100€.

Now I don’t think its little tank would hold more than 40€ worth at a push.
My question is, if we take it back half full, do we get 50€ back?

Call me cynical! Feels a bit like ***** to me!

What’s On – Action for Animals Presents…A Wacky Pram Race!

On Saturday November 26th Action for Animals is organizing a fundraising pram rally around the streets of Cómpeta. If you’d like to participate, we’re looking for teams of five people, using home-made, decorated prams. There will be compulsory ‘pit stops’ at bars and restaurants along the route, where all teams will be required to collect a coupon, as proof of their visit. Prizes for first to finish the course and the best dressed pram and team. So pimp your pram and come and join the fun!

The race is open to over 18’s with an entry fee of 5€ per person – spectators free!

Driving Licence Renewal

You don’t have to wait until you are 65, it can be exchanged at any age.
You, or a gestor on your behalf, have to exchange to licence at Traffico in Malaga. There is no other way. It is quite easy to do yourself.
You might need a medical which can be done at Clinica Rincon. In theory you don’t need one but Traffico will ask for one.
Once you have your licence it can be renewed at places like Clinica Rincon and they will do everything for you.

Having paid 15 or 20 euros previously for cuts that were just okay, I decided to invest just 5 euros, and got not only good styling, but what I actually asked for! Take a picture with you, they don’t speak English, take a ticket when you go in and wait your turn.

I have waited longer when I’ve had an appointment at some places, both here and in the UK!

What’s On – The International Art Symposium LUZ in Competa

is coming up! 17 – 22 October

7 days of Inspiration, Creation, Art, Friendship and Joy!

Soon we’ll have the 2nd International Art Symposium running in Competa!

From 17 October till 22 October.

This symposium brings people together. For a short period of time 11 artists from all over the world gather to exchange information, techniques and ideas related to their profession. These artists, painters and sculptors will inspire each other and will be able to see their colleagues at work. The event will broaden horizons. It helps improve the understanding of other cultures, countries and art. It is a public event using local spaces in Cómpeta where locals, art-lovers and visitors can meet the artists. The LUZ Symposium will be held in the marvelous environment of the Andalusian mountain village Competa, surrounded by beautiful nature.

Can anyone explain the procedure to exchange driving licences.

You hear much well meaning but conflicting advice.

Our experience of renewing residencia in Torre del Mar was quite different to Phil’s in Granada, local rules can apply so you need to check out at your local office.

In Torre del Mar

The initial five year residencia must be renewed
The permanent one does not need to be renewed unless you change name or address
The proof of income and health cover are required only for new applications, not renewals.

Despite what the Granada office may say there is no need to renew your registration (commonly referred to as a residencia) certificate

I have used my green A4 sized certificate to apply for a health card, renew my driving licence, transfer vehicle – all without any problem. Of course when the UK leaves the EU the situation will change and we will probably have to re apply for residency as Non EU citizens. Original Advice offered a Year Ago :-

After receiving conflicting information about the need to renew the residencia certificate I did some further research. At the time of issue I was told it was permanent and did not need to be renewed but since then have been told several times that in fact it needs to be renewed after 5 years. So I googled and found an article which appeared in an expat magazine that discussed this very topic. The reporter wrote to the relevant department and received the attached reply. As you can see – there is no requirement to renew your

“residencia ”

(although if you want the credit card sized one you can pay and queue outside the commisaria and obtain one voluntarily). The reporter suggested printing out the letter and carrying it with your

registration (residencia)

certificate as apparently police have occasionally also insisted that you renew or be fined! This only applies to those from EU countries.

Just to show what a minefield Spanish bureaucracy can sometimes be, we renewed our Residencias earlier this year and had a very different experience to Phil, published in Thursday’s Digame. We had the old style photo cards and we realised they had expired. With the whole Brexit thing going on it prompted us to get these renewed. Expecting to have to start again with all the associated paperwork required these days such as health insurance, bank statements etc, we employed a local lady, who deals with such things, to help us. To our surprise and delight ‘they’ were happy to simply renew our residencias, (even though the originals had expired) with none of the extra paperwork. We did all this at Torre del Mar National Police station and just had to turn up with the appropriate form, fee and a copy of our passports. We were also told that these were now permanent and wouldn’t need to be renewed. Maybe they’re stricter in Granada province!

Residencia renewal.

The information that was given to Phil and posted here yesterday was incorrect. The law is quite clear. There is no requirement to renew the Certificate Of Registration. However, after you have been resident for 5 years, you automatically become entitled to the permanent right of residency in Spain. This is an automatic right and it is not necessary to apply for a new certificate. However, if you wish to do so, you will be issued with an almost identical form/card which differs only by confirming your right of permanent residency.

The law specifically states that you do not have to again show evidence of financial means or health cover. Neither does the law state that certificates must be renewed after any period. It is, sadly, not uncommon for the functionaries in the office to be inadequately instructed on the rules and they frequently give out incorrect information.

Sometimes confusion arises from the fact that residency cards are still issued, but only to non-EU family members of an EU citizen. These cards do have to be renewed every 5 years.

Recommendation – Riser Chair

I too struggled to get in and out of my armchair. I went to the shop (with the original cushion off my chair and the depth measurement) which sells foam, materials, seat cushions etc and is located near the car park and Shanghai Chinese restaurant in Torre del Mar. It is in the area which becomes the Thursday Market. The very nice man there showed me all different standards of foam and I chose material to complement my decor. He then sent me away for an hour to have a coffee. When I returned he had made me a lovely firm cushion complete with cover. The price was very reasonable and depends on the standard and depth of foam and cover material chosen. I think I paid about 30€. The cushion fits my chair perfectly and I no longer struggle in and out of my chair. Of course this simple solution may not be the answer for everyone but I thought it may be of interest generally. Residencia

Referring to the query about residencia I think I can give the definitive answer. Mine too was issued in 2011 as an A4 sheet with no expiry date. After hearing that it may need renewal I contacted my abogado who advised that it needed to be renewed after 5 years.

I duly went along to the oficina de etranjeros in Granada with the necessary paperwork and was issued with the newer card version which shows ‘permanent residency’. However, I asked the official who served me and she stated quite clearly that this too needs to be renewed every 5 years despite it not showing and expiry date.

Be advised that in contrast to my original registration 5 years ago, this time I had to produce certified bank statements to prove my income, a certificate from the health authority (not my health card) to prove my entitlement to Spanish health care (proof of private health insurance is the only other alternative), a new empadrionamento and proof (in the form of Spanish tax returns) that I do actually live here full time.

It was pointed out to me that a lack of an up to date residencia could affect the application for other official documents like a driving licence or health card if you don’t already have one.

I hope this helps – but please don’t delay.

Residencia Question

We have heard conflicting views on this subject and wondered if anyone with recent experience could clarify the situation.

My husband’s residencia was issued late 2011 in the form of an A4 size green sheet of paper- failing to renew on a previous occasion led to a charge of non-resident’s tax based on the value of our property.

My residencia on the other hand, issued in 2013 is a credit-card size document which I assumed was everlasting-neither documents show an expiry date. Does anyone have any clear direction?

What’s on – Wild Geese in Competa

The Wild Geese are playing in Plaza Almijara (main square, Competa) this coming Friday 7 October.

They are a 6 piece band playing a mix of Irish, country and rock with guitars, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, bodhran (Irish drum) and penny whistle, all the band sing.

Amendment to – Interpreters in Spanish Hospitals

Spanish hospitals do not charge for the services of an interpreter – it is free. The interpreters themselves are volunteers (although it is possible to book their services on an individual basis, if you like to have the same interpreter for your appointments for example, for which the Junta set a flat fee). I used to volunteer at my local Centro de Salud until my own health issues got in the way

If you just turn up for a medical appointment and expect an interpreter to be available you may be disappointed – with so many (non Spanish speaking) foreigners living here these days there is a high demand. You could arrange in advance for an interpreter to be available. Alternatively take a Spanish speaking friend/family member with you – or better yet make the effort to learn the language so you can manage for yourself without moaning about others.

Recommendation – English Language Movies

Dear Digamist,

Just a quick thanks to Doug who places the English spoken Movie Shedule on DigameXtra.

After a few year of living here and still struggling with the Spanish language, I went to my first English movie experience in Velez-Malaga (Miss Peregrines home for Particular Children, great for the whole family). It was the Sunday Matinee (12pm) followed by a lovely lunch…

But to our surprise we and one other couple were the only customers (entrance only 5 Euros). What a pity….. If we want the Spanish movies theaters to keep featuring English spoken movies I hope that more people will find there way there to enjoy a good movie matinee.

Lost-Found-Lost Dog Story

The night before last this dog wandered onto our property, heart pounding, and very hungry. We have been feeding her up. She is extremely affectionate and playful. The photos do not do her justice as she is extremely pretty. She is wearing a red plastic collar with little metal bones around. Her approximate weight is 50 kilos and with a bath her white hair would be snow white. She takes doggie treats very gently from my hand. She has no tics or fleas.

Services – Why pay for an interpreter at Carlos Haya Hospital or any other Spanish hospital?

There should be in every Spanish hospital notices indicating your rights in many languages.

Read the notices.

The first item on the list states that they have a duty (mostly from doctors) to tell you anything in your own native comprehensible language via an interpreter if needs be which must be free of charge, as the U.K. does this under European law.

Spanish hospitals will try and get round this by charging you and many are none the wiser hence saving the Spanish health service money.

The company called Aplitex is still very much in business, I called them a couple of days ago to come again this year to spray my trees, but they have moved and I called them on a mobile number 625 039 971. This is the number for Rafael and he speaks English. I would recommend them for anyone who has trees which are too big or difficult to reach yourself. They will come and give a quote first so no surprises. About now is the time to spray before the nests start. If your trees are small enough to spray yourself the product in the photo can be bought in Viveros Amberes Torrox Costa garden centre (no doubt in others too). This is the same product used by Aplitex and is very effective. Safe for pets etc.

I thought that there was a ‘public’ setting when setting up Facebook whereby people that are not registered users can still view the page?

Thank you so much to everybody who participated in the Macmillan fund raising today at the Purple Dragonfly cafe bar. to the people who came, Charlotte for the wonderful cakes she baked, Reno for getting stuck in, Sally my executive secretary! and John for being the taxi driver and helping to organise today.
