How to Check if a Hoax is Valid

The Snopes website is a very useful web site that looks into hoaxes urban myths etc, posted on the Internet to see if they are true or not
According to Snopes “The “Can you hear me?” scam for now seems to be more a suggestion of a hypothetical crime scheme than a real one that is actually robbing victims of money.”
It is always a good idea to check on Snopes before forwarding warnings, If they describe it as a hoax or “not proven” it is probably best not to pass it on.

This is the entire Snopes team. David and Barbara Mikkelson pictured above; are from San Fernando Valley of California. They started their website  ‘Snopes’  about 13 years ago. After a few years it began gaining popularity as people believed it to be unbiased and neutral. But over the past couple of years people started asking questions when ‘Snopes’ was proven wrong in a number of their conclusions. There were also criticisms the Mikkelsons were not really investigating and getting to the ‘true’ bottom of various issues, but rather asserting their beliefs in controversial issues.

 Brian, what evidence do you have to suggest Snopes is trustworthy?  It is run by a husband and wife team – that’s right, no big office of investigators scouring public records in Washington, no researchers studying historical stacks in libraries, no team of lawyers reaching a consensus on current caselaw. No, Snopes.com is just a mom-and-pop operation that was started by two people who have absolutely no formal background or experience in investigative research. A simple review of their “fact-checking” reveals a strong tendency to explain away criticisms towards liberal politicians and public figures while giving conservatives the hatchet job. Religious stories and issues are similarly shown no mercy. There are many things they have listed on their site as a hoax or True, and yet you can go to Youtube and find many video examples with proof of  Snopes  getting it wrong, exposing Snopes’ errors and biases. I highly recommend Sylvia Bowyer, physiotherapist.  After 5 or 6 sessions I’ve had a permanent reversal of chronic neck and upper back stress-induced arthritis and have found it no longer cracks or locks, this, after living with the issue for 10 years now, notably painful for the last 5 years.
This has also improved my sleep as I’d often wake with my neck locked and have to crack it to relieve the pain to get back to sleep.
Sylvia practices a gentle yet extremely powerful technique called the Bowen Technique.  I’d highly recommend this for any soft tissue work and also bone realignment amongst many other issues including a range of chronic illness, chronic fatigue etc. and would definitely suggest this style  above and beyond any harsher styles of therapy that force the body back into shape.  Sylvia is truly gifted and to get such results without any pain or discomfort, just relaxation, for the client is just incredible.
For the past 5 years I’ve tried many forms of physical therapy for my arthritis: different styles of massage , another form of physio (which gave relief for a week only and never resolved my neck issues), three different chiros, and absolutely none of them have been able to work on my arthritis, so I just assumed I would have to live with it.  It’s been over a month now since I started with Sylvia and even though I’ve been under work pressure, the stress just hasn’t sunk back into my neck and shoulders again.  AMAZING!

Services– Steven Rowles Animal Healing

recently worked with a dog called Joey. His owner telephoned in a great deal of distress, as Joey would regularly urinate and even defecate about the house.

Upon arrival Steven met a dog that was resembling a spoilt child and was dictating most of the space important spaces in the house. But, the main concern to his owner was the obviously the urinating. Much to the owner’s dismay, Stevens main concern was the relationship they had between them.

Joey had come from the UK and his background was one of no boundaries.

He had defiant, mischievous and lazy because he could be.

Oddly, many dogs behave in this manner but this is not what they want to do. Like a child, if boundaries are not put in place, they will show many signs in the form of spoilt behaviour.

A dog will do exactly the same and show many signs of distress until it finds them.

Steven took charge of Joey’s space immediately and very quickly established boundaries for the owner to follow. Reluctantly they complied but they could not see how this would stop the urinating.

After three sessions and the owner’s commitment to the work and the new rules, Joey is a different dog. He now behaves in a calmer more passive manner and the urinating and defecating have stopped.

Joey needed and wanted leadership.

He spent most of his time confused, distressed or defiant.

The urinating was one way to display all three and a challenge.

Another happy family.

DoctorLaptop Alert!  If A Telemarketer Or Robocall Asks “Can You Hear Me?” Just Hang Up; It’s A Scam

Here’s how the scam works: you may receive a phone call from an automated system (a robocall) or a live person, but the common thread will be that the caller will ask, “Can you hear me?”
“Yes,” you respond, because you heard the question. Now, according to police departments across the country, that means that the scammers now have a recording of your voice saying “yes.”
Even if you never agree to buy anything, you might later find out you’ve been signed up for a home alarm system, a cruise, some added service for your phone, or any other thing you couldn’t possibly want. If you dispute the charges, the company may take legal action, sticking that recording of you saying “yes” into a recording of a different conversation as evidence that you agreed to the transaction. Another variation uses that recording to “prove” that you agreed to charges on a credit card of yours when the perpetrators have already stolen the number. This is similar to a scam we wrote about in 2010, where scammers posed as pollsters, asking people if, for example, they had a dog. With today’s technology scammers can take just a small recording of you speaking on the phone and use it to create a whole different conversation in your voice that will pass voice analysis confirming that it was you speaking, thus hanging up is better than arguing with them.

We will be moving from Scotland to Torrox (Campo) in March.  Having thoroughly researched removal companies the prices vary significantly.  Few of the companies have testimonials from satisfied customers, and while a competitive price is essential, we are also keen to employ the services of a company that is known to take due care and attention with our belongings.  If you are aware of a removal company that works the route from Scotland to Spain and have had a very good experience fo that company could you please email me with the company name.  It would be helpful if you noted if you thought the company offered value for money too.

Arenas Needs a Home 

This is Arenas who was found as an abandoned puppy near Alhama de Granada where I am staying in a the holiday home of a Spanish friend. He found her here as a puppy, and took her to Seville where she lived in a smallish back yard for about a year, being taken for walks twice a day. When I moved here a year and a half ago I agreed to have her living here,  but I  am now moving on and can’t take her with me. She has grown a bit and cannot go back to the back yard of an urban house in Seville – she is used to the open country round here.

Arenas a female, is now 2 years 3 months old. She is passported with all her vaccinations and has been sterilised. Temperamentally she is a friendly non aggressive and affectionate dog, very social with adults and good around children and other dogs – she would equally be at home with a family or in a quieter domestic environment. Her ideal location would be in open country.

The Find Beau a home appeal….

Steven Recently encountered an Alsatian called Beau via Axaquria Animal Rescue.

A beautiful dog whose background was shall we say unfortunate.

His start as a puppy is sketchy, but his formative years became very unhappy. He is known to have been previously owned by a couple, not Spanish, that had to leave the country, and abandoned Beau, leaving him to survive on his own.

If this wasn’t enough, during this time, someone, unknown, put him through the torture of burning his ears with cigarettes.

I can hear your sharp intake of breath and cries of dismay.

He has also not yet found a permanent home, being fostered on a regular basis, which has not helped his mental security.

Steven was advised that Beau was suffering from some sort of separation anxiety.

Steven is always suspicious of labels, as many rituals can develop around the label, making it twice as worse.

What Steven very quickly discovered was that Beau was actual suffering from the trauma of abandonment and its consequences.

Beau, when left on his own in a house, can be very destructive and when left outside can go to extreme lengths to escape his enclosure.

Steven has worked with Beau and has discovered a very intelligent dog that can, will and has responded to treatment and has proved that he can be left alone while you go out, both inside and out.

First Beau needs a permanent home and for Beau’s sake Steven is extremely keen to continue working with him.

Always remember, if you take on a rescued animal, the likelihood is that some will have suffered some sort of trauma, and the recovery will sometimes take time, commitment and dedication.

In return you will receive eternal love, friendship and loyalty, especially from Beau.

If you feel you could re-home Beau, sympathy is not enough, it is just the start.

Las Perlas closed in October 2016, I think there are plenty of people around who are sorry about that.

An alternative restaurant could be the former Udo Heimer restaurant in Nerja, now it is Mo´s Gastro Tapas restaurant which can be found in a parallel street to the road going dorn to Burriana Beach. Link here:http://www.mogastrotapas.es/

The restaurant are now run by a son and his mother are still in the kitchen. I have heard the she won several prices for her desserts.

It is really a pity but restaurant Las Perlas is closed already a few months.

They had to go to Moscow because of illness in the family.

It will take at least half a year and what will happen after that is still unknown.

We can recommend el Pozo or Padre Pio. Both good restaurants but different style than Las Perlas.  Rolf

Services Needed- Metal Casting etc….

Small metal casting and enameling help required

I am trying to replace a lost designer logo on a shoe.

Despite evidence of its loss the company will not replace it.

My only alternative is to make a mould from its partner and

then cast a new one and enamel it.

It may cost as much as buying a whole pair of shoes, except there is huge sentimental value, and the items are unique.

I’ve seen people advertise classes in this type of hobby, so can anyone please help?

Services Available? Las Perlas ?

We normally visit Spain every year for three to four months, but last year due to family circumstances we were unable to come. So as we are here now we were really looking forward to a restaurant that we had eaten at called ‘Las Perlas’ in Torre del Mar. Looking at the web site it seems that it may have closed. Can anyone confirm this for me, we are just hoping that they have moved as the food was so good no other restaurant came up to this standard.

I would like to recommend Automecánica Rubén.
Rubén and Devi a very friendly young couple have recently moved their car repair workshop in Competa to a new location.
Rubén and his employees work fast and efficient and really go out of their way to make it as cheap as possible. We have had both our cars there and repairs were always done in a very professional way. The new address is just behind the new Coviran supermarket to the right halfway up the steep road towards calle de circunvalacion.

It can also be reached from Plaza del Carmen by driving up and take last street to the left before reaching calle de circunvalacion.

The flight entry is a new (to me) Google game.
It picks up certain events and automatically adds them to the Calendar and sends you an alert.
It can be turned off in the calendar settings, but it’s not easy to find.

From DoctorLaptop: This “Calander Notice of Upcoming Event” was caused by all the flight details included in the original post and should only apply to Gmail users. It’s a so  called “convenience feature” of Google Calander, called Events for Gmail, that Google added to it’s bank of features you receive when you sign up for Gmail, or any other Google services, several years ago. Back then Events for Gmail was an option in Calander that users had to turn on to use. Then Google decided to automatically activate it in user accounts over a year ago, although it was slow to be implemented and some people are just now having the Events for Gmail feature show up. As for this problem post re-appearing in subsequent issues of DigameXtra after the original was published in issue #479 last Sunday, I have yet to see evidence of this, although I have received a few reports that it has done so. If that offending post has re-appeared in your DigameXtra in the last 2 issues (#480 or #481), please forward a copy or screenshot to me at doctorlaptop @ gmx.com. I suspect what these few reports were referring to was actually a “prompt” from Calander reminding you that you had an upcoming scheduled event, in this case a flight, superimposed on top of the new issue of DigameXtra. My investigation will continue and if I find out any more info I will post it.

Jukebox Bandits are playing live in the big heated tent at El Recreo (behind the Town Hall) this coming Friday 27th Jan from 7.30pm.

Jukebox Bandits are a covers band consisting of Rod Jones on keyboards, Ian Hayton on bass, guitar and vocals, Marshall Dixon on drums and percussion and Mitch France on acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, banjo and vocals.

Update on starving dogs Sayalonga

I  would just like to say that the 2 dogs we have been feeding in Sayalonga have been rescued, and are now in private kennels in Torrox, as there are no spaces in rescue centres.

They have been seen by a vet, and are being nursed back to health. Thank you to all people who fed them.

The person who managed to get them into the car was Ursula  Wiega, who also helped to get the feral cats of Sayalonga spayed.

There was a coffee meeting the other day in Sayalonga to decide what to do now, and a big thank you for people who donated money.

Maybe someone who has space would like to adopt these dogs, or could give a small amount of euros to help pay for their board in Raza hotel (doggy) Torrox till we can home them. Together would be great as they are good friends and have had a hard life so far. I know this only 2 dogs, but it’s 2 dogs less to die by starvation.

Medi Alert does NOT work in Spain!!!  If you are not in the social security national health system in Spain where your allergies are noted on your records, and you have an accident or become incapacitated and unable to communicate with a Doctor or emergency service, you must make some other kind of arrangement, Im not sure what that might be other than to make as many people aware of your issue.  Even wearing one of those bracelets which alert people to your problem will not necessarily be looked at or understood  Some of my patients put notices on their fridges, who to call in case of an accident or emergency, which is usually me, so when calling an ambulance I can make it clear that they are not to be given certain drugs.  Its a bit of a hit and miss arrangement though.  If you are in the health system here and want an apparatus at home which calls a central unit at the press of a button around your neck, it will be recorded and you can have this in English.  These cost 10 euros per month if you are under 80 years old, and are free if you are over 80.

I hope this helps a little although it is a worry unless you really get organised!

I can’t answer Gwen’s question about whether paramedic’s would check for medical information on an ID bracelet or necklace, but I have found another method of making medical information available where the paramedics are likely to look. I have discovered an app for my smart phone. It is a free app, and there is a selection to choose from. If you access the playstore and type in ’in case of emergency’ a selection will come up that you can choose from. The one I selected allows you to input medical information, allergy information, next of kin and/or contacts details, it also allows you to add important information such as you have a pet who is home alone and will need taking care of. The app shows on your home screen and can be accessed without unlocking your screen, and you can choose to allow it to access your phone or your contacts. The point is that in an emergency the paramedics are likely to check your phone to find a contact who can be notified. I now have this on my two mobiles one with the details in English and the other with the details in Spanish. Hope this is of help, not only to those with serious medical conditions, but also possibly for those with pets who are concerned that in the case of an accident nobody knows that they need to be cared for.

First of all I want to say thank you for the beautiful mantra chanting in the morning at Centro Shiva Torrox. Feel invited to come again. It’s donation based so you don’t need much money. I know that yoga often costs a bit more money but for the chanting you give what you want. It was heartwarming
Besides that Inma and I have changed the time for the upcoming partneryoga workshop. It’s gonna be Jan, 28th 6-8 pm.
You can come with your partner, a family member or another person and enjoy the feeling of doing yoga together. Also beginners are warmly welcome.
It’s a lot more than bodywork.
It’s about communication, trust and humor.
