Medi Alert Question

I am asking if anyone out there knows or can help find out if wearing a medi alert bracelet here in Spain will be looked for or recognised.

There must be lots of folks like me who have severe allergies etc which would preclude them from various medical treatments in an emergency.

I, for instance, am extremely allergic to aspirin and NSAIDs and if given these drugs it would mean extreme anaphylaxis. I don’t really know how to begin to ask these questions of the health authority’s.

Does anyone know a paramedic they could ask. Or know the leading health authority contacts here in Andalucia?

This may help save someone’s life out there.

his last week I contacted Marcus, and arranged to see him. He was very understanding and knowledgeable.

He went through all my concerns and problems with my iPhone and MacBook, corrected each one, and only moved on when I understood what I had done wrong.

He spoke normal English (not computerese!) and right now, everything is working fine again.

The Nerja Players require a baby carriage (pram) for use in a play, “Absent Friends” by Alan Ayckbourn, which is being presented at the Nerja Bridge Club on February 7. .We are a non-profit charitable English-speaking organization which has be active for some 30 years and participation and attendance at performances are open to all.
We would need use of the pram for about two days — to be picked up on February 6 and returned onFebruary 8.

As we are a non-profit volunteer group, we would prefer to borrow the pram but would be willing to pay a reasonable rental fee.

In either case, we can deposit the cost of purchase as a surety of its safe return.

Services Needed Dog walker needed in Torrox Costa area  (near Mercadona)

I am looking for someone who can do 1 to 2 hour walks on leash for a newly rescued older podenco-cross older pup weighting 20 kils.  I rescued him from being stuck in a front yard for the first 8 months of his life from well-meaning but clueless Spanish fosterers who took him out at most 15 mins a day . He is well behaved with 4 hours of walks a day but I don’t have the time or energy for that each day so am looking for educated dog walking help.

He is very keen to walk anywhere at all, so long as there are good sniffs.  This dog is definitely half Podenco but seems more a scent hound, than sight hound so grass is better than concrete.

You can walk him on leash.  He has not been well socialised though is very loveable so you must be able to take precautions including:

• ensuring you are between the dog and passers-by
• pulling him back from any dog he takes a dislike to (he weighs about 20 kilos and I, as an average sized female, can hold him back)
• reinforcing the teaching to sit and calm if he does jump at a dog (about 70% of the time, he loves many dogs, but takes a dislike to a few)
• practising precaution with unknowns and keeping a distance with: children on bikes, adults on bikes, adults running/jogging, children or adults making a lot of noise / commotion
• keep him away from sudden movements (brace the leash)

What’s on- Stars of the West End, Mijas Costa

The Phoenix Club are off to a concert at Mijas Costa called “Stars of the West End” – it is a theatre show on Friday 24^th March in the beautiful Las Lagunas Theatre, Mijas Costa (behind El Corté Inglés).  The audience at the theatre production will hear songs from “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Les Misérables”, “Jersey Boys”, “Oliver”, “Mama Mia”, “Miss Saigon” and many more during a 2-hour show (2 acts with a 20-minute interval).

 

The “West End” comes to the Costa de Sol in March 2017 with 3 Principle performers from currently running Musicals arriving with the popular “Stars of the West End” show.

Featuring favourite songs from the most popular musicals, Mike Sterling (Phantom of the Opera), Lisa-Anne Wood (Les Misérables) and Michael Conway (Jersey Boys) bring the very best of musical theatre to Spain. All have had leading roles in the top West End musicals over the years.

Mike Sterling has been an Artiste in Theatre, Television, Concert and recording for the past 23 years. He has starred in major hit musicals in London’s West End, and is known most notably for his interpretation of ‘The Phantom’ in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” (over 1000 shows), and ‘Jean Valjean’ in Cameron Mackintosh’s  “Les Misérables” which have earned him international acclaim. Thus, to date he has enjoyed an extremely successful career on a global scale, including a 6 month sell out UK tour as ‘Dexter Haven’ in Cole Porter’s ‘High Society’, alongside Wayne Sleep.

This well established group offers professional tuition in all mediums, water colour, oil, acrylic, charcoal, pastel and pencil.

We cover all subjects, figure drawing, portraiture, landscapes and still life. This year we will also draw and paint on location in this beautiful village.

I don’t know if any digamites would be interested but we have been watching the Space station passing overhead this morning – if interested Google “spot the station” and you can register to be told when it will be passing, what area (in the sky) and for how long.    We started watching it when Tim Peake was on board – perhaps others might enjoy it or pass the information on to family members – you can choose the area you want to know about.

About the Zoo de Castellar – The ‘zoo’ de Castellar is not your typical zoo. It was started as a private rescue sanctuary back in 1998 and was finally opened to the public in 2002.

For years it remained relatively unknown and unvisited. Word of mouth ensuring its survival. Bit-by-bit things are beginning to change.  All of the animals have been rescued by the customs or police.

Its location is of no coincidence, conveniently located near the border; most of the residents were victims of illegal animal smuggling between Europe and Africa.  Some were also rescued from circuses. From its most famous resident ‘Princessa’, a four month old Bengali Tiger to emus, Vietnamese pot bellied pigs, monkeys, all kinds of birds, a hyena, rabbits, even domestic chickens, the zoo has a wide diversity of animals. Over 500 to be exact, from 120 different species.

The refuge centre opened its doors to the public in 2002, mainly to raise funds for the ever increasing number of animals but also in an attempt to educate visitors to their plight.

The zoo is very open and interactive; we are encouraged to touch and meet the animals.

The facilities are basic and are constantly being updated. You can buy small bags of seeds for 1€ as you enter and can walk around feeding the animals.

The petting areas are well controlled, the staff seem to know what they are doing and above all it is an experience we will not forget.

There are not many places where you can play with a live tiger or feed lemurs by hand.

Recommendation – Scrapping a Vehicle

As it wasn’t mentioned in the original post, I can confirm that you can scrap UK registered vehicles, or any other for that matter, as well as Spanish ones.

I recently scrapped my beloved UK registered LDV van that had broken down.

I called out Desguace Valle Niza, just off exit 265 of the A7/E15.

They sent out a grua to recover the van and took it to the depot.

Be aware that you must have the registration document in your name and identification, as always best to go armed with everything!

They will complete all the paperwork and give you a two copies of the destruction certificate, plus they will return your V5 log book.

I sent a copy of the destruction certificate and the whole V5 log book back to DVLA who confirmed that the vehicle was longer in my name a couple of weeks later.

Valle Niza paid me 150€ for the van as well.

Help the Transition to a New Home.

Every day I interact with dogs as a dedicated fosterer and I’m richer for it.

Very occasionally a day is dominated by dogs, but most days are enhanced by their company. We currently have 4 foster dogs, with 1 shortly moving to her forever home. Longest foster tenure for us has been 1-1/2 years (she needed the extra time and work to prepare) and the shortest was 48 hours. In all cases, I feel supported by other volunteers who are working to help animals.

Fostering a dog is the best way to prepare them for a forever home. They grow more confident as they learn how to depend on their environment for food, exercise, shelter and affection. For many, perhaps most, these things weren’t  given previously. In turn, they give back affection and appreciation in spades. I believe that dogs kept in kennels or refuges don’t receive the same benefits that dogs in foster homes do. It only makes sense that a foster home better prepares an animal for their next step – a forever home.

Can you open your home and your heart to temporarily help a dog or a cat? If you are worried about attaching, best way to start out can be to take an animal already adopted who is only awaiting transport.

If you don’t know how to find an animal looking for foster care, I’ll help you connect with local animal charities working hard (all volunteers) to help these animals. Come on, give it a try. Metamizol and Medication in General

As a Registerd Nurse working in the  Andalucia (. 25 km radius  of Nerja) I would say.Metamizol has its use in end of life care and even then may not be acceptable to different individuals.

I am regularly finding that I am asked to visit people who have been over prescribed pain relief  especially the elderly after operations.

There are often drug errors when two different types of medication are prescribed which drop a patient’s blood pressure and I ” pick up on them'” ( no pun intended) when I am called to see a patient who is having falls.

There are also issues when patients have electrolyte imbalances and have a few different ” water pills” on the go and develop incontinence and confusion as a result..

It is always worth asking the doctor to explain what the prescribed medication is for..what the Doctor prescribes may not exactly match what the patient thinks they are getting ,! Also consider the answer may not always be ” one more tablet”

Just contact a vehicle scrap yard who are licensed to scrap and issue a licence of destruction for vehicles.
They will collect the car and, usually, give you about €200 for it.

There is a dead car depot in entro Industrial Zambrano in Velez Malaga inland from the cemetery.

In Spanish the depot is called a desguace: Desguace Rodri.

1.) If you manage to drive the car to it they will give you 100€ for it and within a week you will receive the legal paper work (they take care of contacting trafico for you).

2.) If your car cannot make it there on its own, they will pick it up with a grua and you’ll pay for that service.

Treatment – orthodox or alternative

There seems to be a fairly constant flow of comments on this website about the benefits of, or the dangers of, either orthodox or alternative medical treatments. Some worry me and as a retired doctor I would like to offer some of my thoughts.
All treatments, whether Orthodox or alternative are designed to change the way the body works. If they are not capable of doing that they are ineffective and not worth spending any money on. But if they can affect the body they can also have adverse effects.
The most important first step in curing any problem is to know what you are treating. Alternative practitioners will rarely undertake blood tests and other investigations, relying solely on taking a history and physical examination.  Do not trust any practitioner that only offers a cursory examination and does not take a proper history. Doctors are legally responsible for the quality of their work and although they do make mistakes, you do have redress and their career depends upon the quality of their work.
Once you know that your condition is not serious the next step is to accept that many conditions will get better by themselves in time if your body is allowed to heal itself. Some forms of “alternative medicine” rely on this natural healing process whilst emptying your wallet. Use Google to check out reputable websites to discover the benefits of the treatment that you are being offered.
Often the most effective treatment is the cheapest but most unpalatable, such as losing weight, stopping smoking or cutting out the alcohol, even all three together! Do not expect any therapist to make you better by themselves, the greatest effort has to come from yourself.
We are what we eat, and indeed most of our medicines come from herbs and plants. A balanced diet from fresh produce is always a sensible lifestyle. You can be intolerant to ingredients in your diet without actually being allergic to them. Identifying the cause is always difficult, but is made impossible if you do not know what is in the food you are eating. Even if you are well informed, the knowledge of catering staff and language problems make this a very difficult problem to manage here.
When treatment involves massage or manipulation you are very dependent upon the skill of the individual practitioner. Qualifications and certificates on the wall mean little, personal recommendation from friends who have got better is the most effective endorsement.
What ever the medical problem please do not put your blind faith in what ever the practitioner says. We all get it wrong sometimes. If you do not understand something, ask. A reputable practitioner will always want their patients to understand what is happening. It is your body, it is your responsibility to look after it. Do not blame any practitioner if you are not prepared to do that.

I have now disposed of the Metamizol capsules prescribed by my doctor for an arthritic condition 18 months ago. I had read in a local magazine that Nolotil could be very dangerous, but had no idea that Metamizol was the generic name. Recommendation – Knitted Knockers

After seeing a post on Digame, I went to meet the local members of the Knitted Knockers charity today at Los Yucas in Torre del Mar, who were guests of the knitting club who meet there. Knitted knockers provide lightweight, 100% cotton, knitted knockers free to anyone who has had a mastectomy.

I had such a warm welcome and was quickly put at ease. I had been considering a reconstruction of my breast following my mastectomy as I find my prosthetic breast so heavy and uncomfortable to wear, in fact I only ever wore it if I was going out. Imagine my delight at being given a knitted knocker there and then and to discover that they also knit ones that are suitable to use for swimming.

I have been wearing it all day with no discomfort and it has really helped me to finally make the decision not to put myself at further risk of having more surgery.

So all you ladies out there who have also had mastectomies and would like an alternative to your prosthetic get in touch. What have you got to loose, they are free and just maybe a knitted knocker, or knockers, will be just right for you too. All you need is your cup size and decide what colour you would like, they do a large range of colours too.

Just a brief suggestion for some of your postings.

Sometimes events are publicised by reproducing a poster of the upcoming event. But the copy is often too small or out of focus to legible.
Secondly, on quite a few occasions I have been intrigued by the details of an upcoming event only to find there is no listing for the address. There seems to be an assumption that everyone knows where such and such a bar is.

Peña Escrito Zoo ?

Does anyone out there have any information on the current status of the Peña Escrita zoo situated in the hills north of Almuñécar? I am enquiring as their upper parking lot is a preferred starting point for ascending Navachica. The last status I have is that the gate at the lower end of the road is chained and locked. The word is that the animals are being relocated due to concerns raised by the SPCA. So, the salient question is whether the road will be opened to the public at some point, if it hasn’t been already!
Answers to DigameXtra please as I’m sure there are other concerned hikers out there.

Warning: This drug, prescribed as a common painkiller to holidaymakers in Spain, is potentially ‘toxic’. For unknown reasons Brits and the Irish are especially vulnerable. (I am only a quarter Irish and it nearly killed me)

Metamizol is the generic name for a drug that also goes under the names of Dipyrone, Analgin, Novalgin, and Melubrin. It is a non-opioid pain-reliever and fever-reducer. It was available all over the world from the 1920’s to the 1970’s, but at that point it was discovered that Metamizol carries with it a small risk of causing agranulocytosis, a potentially fatal condition characterized by a dangerous drop in white blood cells.

What’s on – Yoga classes at Viveros El Agarrobo 

From 7 January, Jutta Bruckner, health and fitness teacher, is giving yoga lessons from 12.00 to 13.15  at the Biomarket in Viveros El Algarrobo (on the  A-356 road from  Torre del  Mar towards  Lake Viñuela , km 39).

The yoga style is chi-yoga, a principle of breathing, concentration and movement. The course is held in German, English and Spanish.

Jutta Bruckner has extensive  experience with movement groups,  over ten years on the Costa del Sol.

What’s on Feb 3^rd Shopping in Gibraltar- Phoenix Club

The Phoenix Club is off on their next shopping trip to Gibraltar on Friday the 3rd February, with good availability.

We have pick ups at at the A1 Garden Centre, Torre del Mar bus station and finally at Algarrobo Lidl at 08.30.  The bus is parked in Morrisons car park and we leave Gibraltar at 16.30.  Due to visa restrictions on entering Gibraltar, please advise if you are a non EU citizen when you book.  Also it is important to remember to bring with you your EHIC card, just in case, and passports are essential.  On the way to Gibraltar we stop at San Pedro to spend a penny and for coffee.

We would greatly appreciate if payment was made before the journey.

The price?  €12pp includes a €1 gratuity for the driver.  Children under 12 can join us for 1/2 price.   Still the best value on the coast!
Early booking is recommended if you like a particular place, as seat numbers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Plenty to see in Gibraltar apart from the shopping!

What’s on- Manouche jazz in Nerja

Gypsy jazz (also known as gypsy swing or hot club jazz) is a style of jazz music often said to have been started by guitarist Jean “Django” Reinhardt in the 1930s. Because its origins are in France it is often called by the French name, “jazz manouche”, or alternatively, “manouche jazz”, even in English language sources.
