What’s On – Disco Pizza Events

At DiscoPizza we have been organising different events geared to promoting culture in Torrox.  We would be most grateful If you could spread the word for us, so we can continue with these activities regularly.
On Wednesdays we have a jam and open mic sessions and on Saturdays life music shows starting at 9 o’clock.  Our premises offer an excellent new generation sound system and very good lighting equipment for the stage.
Early in the evenings we have dance workshops (Tuesday: Latin Dance, Wednesday: Tango Dance, Friday: Sevillanas Dance), and Fridays are dedicated to Latín Dance (salsa, bachata, kizomba) starting at 10:00 pm.  DJ and dance floor at your disposal with no entrance fee to pay.
We would like to bring to your attention our choice of cocktails which are prepared with a very high standard of professionalism and well worth a try.   We also offer our food menu with pizzas and home made lasagne.

Today, 11th March, in our Organic Market Viñuela, You can taste artisan jams, made with ecological and seasonal products , you will find fruits and vegetables, spices and vegetables, flours and coffees or teas and eggs, beer from Comares, cheese of Malaga and organic raw goat cheese from Huelva, homemade bread cooked in wood oven, raw pastry , Lebanese and Sephardic sweets, samosas and chutneys.
All healthy and delicious !!!
If you do not want to cook we have vegetarian and vegan food to take away or eat it in our bar with fantastic tea or coffee.
Our handicraft area start to feel the spring colors with hand-painted t-shirts, macramé necklaces and bracelets, essential oils, argan and magnesium oil, this and more.

Seacrest Kennels Going Strong

We would like to set the record straight.  Contrary to rumours and speculation, Seacrest Kennels in Nerja is STILL in business.

Our family has owned and operated Seacrest for over 15 years and we plan on staying another 15 years or more.

Unfortunately, there is a new boss in town in charge of the motorway access road and he has had the signs of local businesses removed, including ours, presumably for aesthetic reasons which has led some people to jump to the wrong conclusion.

What’s On – Visit to the Orchid House, Estepona

The Phoenix Club are off to Estepona on Friday the 21st April to visit The Orchid House situated in the middle of town.

It is the largest Orchid House in all Europe, bigger than the Palacio de Cristal – Crystal Palace – in the Retiro Gardens in Madrid.  Nearly 11,000 square feet in area, the glasshouse has an overall volume of over half a million cubic feet in a modernist design.

It has three glass domes to provide natural light, the largest being 100 feet high and weighing fifty tons. Inside, apart from the thousands of trees and plants, there is a 56 foot high waterfall splashing down into the gardens, and a lake.

The gardeners have created separate areas to represent the natural environments of South America and Asia, with their own native orchids on display. Over 8,000 different species have been cultivated in the Municipal Greenhouses. Care has been taken to select varieties that flower at different periods of the year, so that whenever you come, there will be a stunning display of orchids in flower.

The Orchid House is sitting in a 160,000 square foot right in the heart of a busy town.

Chulito, male cat lost in Torrox Costa since 1st of March 

He is 11 months old and lived in Nerja in a 3rd floor apartment with a terrace only. 2 days after we moved to Torrox Costa, Urbanización Santa Rosa, Los Llanos into a garden apartment, he escaped through the kitchen window, and for the first time experienced street life, other animals, cars, lots of people etc. He might be frightened and may be hiding somewhere, in a garage or similar. Or he might have returned back to Nerja to his old home, at Mar de Nerja, which is on the right side of the Sunday Market/between Almijara and Capistrano.

He is light grey tigred European/Roman/Persian mix, castrated, microchipped, vaccinated and very playful and friendly with people. He is also very curious and adventerous and loves to eat!!!

Please help me find him, I am so desperate and sad.

Festival of Sacred & Antique Music “La Liebre de Marzo”

The 4th Festival of Sacred & Antique Music “La liebre de marzo” will take place on March 11 and March 18.  As in previous years, this festival will take place at the Cultural Center “Casa del Apero” in Frigiliana.

This time around the festival’s focus is on vocal music with two extraordinary presentations:

On March 11th, mezzosoprano Carmen Ariza will inaugurate the festival with “The Spirituality of Great Geniuses”, a program  based on baroque religious music and a few incursions into later periods. Mozart, Vivaldi, Pergolesi, Fauré are among the composers she has selected.  Carmen Ariza will be accompanied by the flute of Inmaculada Gómez, and by the piano of Antonio Manzano.

Thursday 16^th March – Coach excursion to Gibraltar.  Why not join Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar and visit Gibraltar, a chance to take a cable car to the top of the Rock, see the unique Barbary apes.  Visit the upper Rock nature reserve, where you will find the Historic tunnels dating from 1779-1783 and St. Michael´s cave.  Both of these have guided tours.  In the town can be seen the Gibraltar Museum, Government House and in the southern area are key historical sites. All information may be obtained from the tourist office, or an excellent alternative way of seeing the sights is by hiring a taxi, whose drivers are very knowledgeable and will explain the interesting, historical life of the Rock.  It is also an opportunity to purchase duty free Items and typical English items of food, etc. from the Morrisons super market. Ticket price 12 Euros available at the Centre.  Proceeds for fund raising.  Departure times Puente don Manuel (Bar Mis Tapitas) 6.45, Algarrobo (Lidl) 7.15, Caleta (Vets)7.20 and Torre Del Mar (Bus Station) 7.30. Thursday 23^rd March – Coach Excursion to Olvera and Setenil de las Bodegas.   Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar, invites you to join friends on a coach excursion where you will first visit the picturesque town of Olvera, situated north east of Ronda.  The original settlement is more than 2 thousand years old and was added to by the Phoenicians and Romans, followed by the Moors in the 9^th century who held it until King Alfonso XI conquered it in 1327.  On arrival, at approximately 10.30, there will be free time for coffee and to climb to the castle which was constructed at the end of 12th century, mostly in the 13th, on a strategic rock giving the ability to communicate with other nearby castles through signals. Also dominating the area is the Nuestra Señora de la Encarnacioñ church constructed in 1822 and finished in 1843 and is one of the greatest churches of the province and in fact hides one of Andalucía’s best small museums behind its imposing bulk. The town was declared a centre of artistic and historic importance in 1983. You may also visit the Plaza de Andalusia which has a majestic stone fountain/waterfall and great rock garden. In the old part of town its origins are evident with narrow streets, strategic corners, old cottages etc, exposing the visitor to the old architecture of the Muslim town entwined with the modern.

You will leave Olvera at 13.00 for the short half hour drive to the unique village of Setenil de las Bodegas set in a backdrop of huge cliffs, above the Rio Trejo.  The blinding white houses seem to emerge from the rocks; some have rock roofs and even olive groves on their roofs. You will have free time for lunch and a walk around the village departing at approximately 16.15, for the return journey to Torre del Mar arriving at 18.00 approximately.  Lux Mundi suggest that you can research the relevant web sites and tourist offices for more information as to what can be visited and seen during your free time in both towns.  Ticket price 20 Euros available at the Centre.  Proceeds for fund raising.  Departure times Viñuela (Football Pitch) 07.50, Algarrobo (Lidl) 08.15, Caleta (Vets) 08.20, Torre del Mar (Bus Station) 08.30.

Taking your Dog to the UK

We have recently re-located to UK and took our elderly, shy and nervous Spanish Water Dog with us.  We chose to fly him over as we considered a 3 day trip with a stranger would be too traumatic.  We chose Thomson Airlines on recommendation from a friend.  They could not have been more helpful, kind and considerate of our dogs needs.  We followed their advice,   We got his crate a month early and slowly introduced him to it making it his ‘bed’ for the final 2 weeks prior to flight, we sprayed his bed with pheromone spray, gave him his favourite toys and an item of clothing my  husband had worn they day before. We also gave Mitch 1 Adaptil calming tablet.  On the day he was calm, and actually seemed interested in what was happening.  The handlers at both ends of the journey were gentle and kind to him and he has shown absolutely no signs of trauma post journey.  We parted with him at 9 am and were re-united at 3 pm so just 6 hours,  The crew on our flight told us that  they were aware that he was on board and he would be fine and would probably sleep for most of the journey.  We are so glad we decided to transport him this way.     Jan

Recommendation – Dog-healer Steven Rowle

After my eldest dog died, my 6 year old boxer started to panic when he was left on his own. He missed his partner so much, that he started a Houdini practice and escaped every day from our well fenced garden, just to wander around.

His anxiety made him hurt himself to get out.

Steve came to our house and had just a few sessions with him and calmed him down to start with.

We had already decided to take another dog as companionship, but my boxer’s aggressive behaviour against other dogs made us doubt.

Steven was very confident about getting everything right with my dog so I trusted him to come to the dog park in Velez with my” bulldozer” – first aid kit ready to grab.

What happened there was amazing…. Steven walked him around the park in the mean time treating him and I followed 50 meters behind with open mouth.

My dog played with some of the dogs and ignored others completely, male, female he met all of them and all went great.

Last week we adopted through “Angeles Sin Voz” a wonderful 3 months old Rottweiler mix and nothing makes me happier seeing these 2 running around together.

Many, many thanks Steven for making this happen again.

We are selling a Huawei 4G internet router. We bought it from Amena to have wireless internet in our house, but we finally decided on another provider.

The router can be used with all providers, it is unused and brand new. For sale on Amazon for over 70 euros.

4G is a good solution if you don’t have a landline or you don’t want to have internet through antenna. You just buy a SIM-card from a provider, put in the router and you have internet. The drawback however is that there usually is a maximum of megas you can use on a monthly basis.

We’re in Algarrobo costa but can meet elsewhere.

Burglaries….What a Timely Story
Here in the Sayalonga at least 20 homes have been burgled and ransacked in our area over the last month.

They often do it at night when the owners are in the house asleep.

Friends of ours actually had them recorded on their outside cctv at 22:30 a couple of Saturdays ago. They were in bed at the time, the burglars right outside their bedroom window.

Fortunately a PIR light came on which spooked them and they left.

Three people, faces masked, wearing gloves and carrying backpacks.

Saturday seems to be their favourite night.

They must know the area pretty well as we are all campo and they burgle a house, walk cross country, and believe me it’s not easy in daylight let alone pitch dark to the next one and so on. Often doing 3 or 4 one after the other.

On other occasions it appears that they have been watching in the daytime and strike as soon as they see the owners go out somewhere.

They also break into cars and made one hell of a mess of our friend’s trying to open doors or windows with a crowbar.

The Guardia believe that it is a professional gang who have been operating for 7 months or so between Algarrobo and Competa.

Maybe they are done with this area and moved on to pastures anew.

Real shame as we have to lock everything and be ultra vigilant for the time being.

I recently had Warren Phillips take my car for him to work his magic on.

As my car is nine years old and has been used regularly to take garden rubbish to the dump and had generally not been looked after, the seats were very stained, and the paintwork had lots of sap on it from being parked under a tree quite regularly.

After Warren had the car and carried out his work, it is now fully back to showroom condition.

The Phoenix Club are off to a concert at Mijas Costa called “Stars of the West End” – it is a theatre show on Friday 24^th March in the beautiful Las Lagunas Theatre, Mijas Costa (behind El Corté Inglés).  The audience at the theatre production will hear songs from “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Les Misérables”, “Jersey Boys”, “Oliver”, “Mama Mia”, “Miss Saigon” and many more during a 2-hour show (2 acts with a 20-minute interval).

The Nerja Players are presenting a dramatised reading of two one-act comedies by Christopher Durang, one of America’s most produced playwrights,

“The Actor’s Nightmare” and “Not My Fault.”

The two plays are related in theme, based on men who find themselves in impossible situations by no doing of their own; yet they are surrounded by people who seem to know their predicament yet go on with their own activities as if everything was in good order.

The performance starts at 19:00 hours and will be held in the Nerja Bridge Club – entrance is through the blue doors next to the Café Royal at the top of Avda Castilla Perez, Nerja.

Please can people put locations on posts on Digamextra?

I know Jane has asked for this a million times, perhaps she shouldn’t post things if it’s missing, but then again she has better things to do I am sure than edit all posts.

Today there was a recommendation for Ink n Chips for printers, no mention of where, being near Supersol doesn’t help – is it Torrox? Torre del Mar? Nerja? Almuñécar? And yes, I could ring the number given and ask, but really, is it so difficult to include it in the first place?

Torre del Mar Police Station Visits

Although we like to do as much as we can ourselves here.

I must admit that paying our gestoria a modest sum to sort out things at the police station has been well worth the money.

In the past she has sent a member of staff to get the all important ticket and we have turned up after 9am with them and then didn’t even have to wait as our number was just about to come up.

It seems a chaotic system but the professionals seems to be able to able to manage it better, so I leave it to them! BW

Not quite true, GH. You can deal with Paypal problems even if you don’t have an account. It took me 3 goes though. I occasionally got emails concerning a Paypal account in my name with my email address but no details. Contacting Paypal by Skype (the cheapest option) I fiinaly found the account had been set up in Australia but had never actually been used. I was told it had now been deleted…. and I’ve had no further emails on that account,

Lovely Saturday evening at El Pino , Torrox.

Returned home at 11 to find house burgled and ransacked.

Unsure what to do – returned to El Pino were PJ spoke to Guardia on our behalf. Returned home to Pago Santilla, Torrox and found 2 very helpful Guardia Officers who were very friendly and kept saying sorry  .

Going to Police Station on Sunday morning we found company in 3 near neighbours who had also been burgled.

We were both very upset and shocked by everything but it was nice to know there are still some nice helpful friendly people out there.

Long Term Rental Needed –Road bicycle

A friend is visiting us in Canillas de Albaida for a weekend at the end of the month and wants to rent a road bike so we can ride together.

I know there’s XNerja in Nerja but as it’s a fleeting visit he’d prefer to pick one up closer to home or along the route from the airport.

Can anyone recommend somewhere in say Velez Malaga or Torre del Mar or anywhere en route?

PayPal Warning

If you get any emails from PayPal that do not have your name on them, i.e. If they are addressed Dear Customer, DONT use the link into your account and give them your password, these are scam emails.
I have had many of them, with invoices for hundreds of pounds, just delete them, once they have your password they can access your account and then they can use your bank account.
If you get any emails from PayPal, it’s better to go into your account directly and never trust that the email is genuine.

Traffic Fines

Re: problems getting fines through the post/knowing you have been fined.

When I registered my car onto Spanish plates last year the Gestor – Teresa in Torrox Pueblo – arranged for me to be signed up to a service that links the car and my NIE to my email address. If I do get a fine I will get an email. It is also possible to look at your “account” online to see if there any fines there.  There was a small fee for doing this and it involved putting a form in at the local government office.

Money well spent for peace of mind, especially if you forget about the cameras between Torrox and the airport (Guilty m’lud).

That NIE Thing

It seems we all have to learn the hard way.   I have over the years paid 4 or 5 wasted visits to what I call the NIE Police office at Torre del Mar.  The other day in passing, I thought I would check the procedure with the policeman who mans the door because I was intending to take a friend there.  Despite my poor Spanish I got the rather odd message that the office opens at 0830hrs but one needs to be there at 0800hrs to get an appointment.

We arrived at 0800 two days after Dia de Andalucia day to find about 40 people queuing on the pavement and clustered round the entrance.    We took our place in the queue and got very cold.  Nothing happens of course.  At 0830 some office staff arrived and some time after this the door policeman came out with a handful of those paper queue numbers like you get at the fish counter at Mercadona.  We politely waited as people ahead of us were given their appointment number.  There seem to be different numbers for different types of appointments and the cluster of people at the entrance thinned out until we were within reach of the precious ticket only to find that the one given to my friend was the last one available .   There were many behind us .  We thought about the implications of this, the long wait inside because the dozens of people to be seen would take ages and the fact that I didn’t get a ticket.

The unlucky ones were confused.  A lady behind us in the queue had been there the day before and failed to get an appointment so for her this was another wasted journey.  A man beside us was lost by all this and had travelled a long way so my friend gave him his ticket, it appeared the best option.  We will return.  But how early does one have to be there to guarantee an appointment ticket I wonder.  Perhaps one must resort to a sleeping bag and tent and arrive the night before !

Paypal problem….

The only way this could have happened is that someone, possibly a family member?, has linked your card, card number, expiry date and CSV code, to their Paypal account.
You could try contacting Paypal on 900801665 but normally they will only answer queries from a Paypal account holder.
They might help as this appears to be fraud but also they might say that it was your fault for not keeping your card details safe.
If you feel strongly about it you could set up a Paypal account and then they might be willing to help you.
You have done the right thing in cancelling your card.

I have no accounts with Pay Pal so they very difficult to tak to as they

want a “User Name and Password”.

As the payments were on a Visa Debit Card the bank said it was unable to help.

The only way I stopped payment was by cancelling the card.

The amounts were not large 6.08 euro on two consecutive weeks,

Is this a common problem and does anyone have an email address for Pay Pal?

It is important that your car is on Spanish plates and you have a Spanish address to which your Driving Licence is also registered. If DGT knows your address then they “should” send

I am a tennis player (USA) and I will be visiting in the Torrox area for 6 weeks beginning March 11, 2017.

I am retired (age 68) and have a lot of tennis experience including teaching and coaching tennis when I was younger.

I prefer doubles or just hitting.  I do not play singles anymore.

I prefer playing for one or one and a half hours.

I have a court at my apartment for use near the end of the Torrox Promenade next to the beach.

Guitar Player Needs instrument to Rent

Guitar Players: I play guitar and I will be vacationing in Torrox Costa (last house at the end of the Promenade) for 6 weeks beginning March 11, 2017.  I can’t bring my guitar on vacation because of the new airline charges for musical instruments. Saturday 4^th March – World Women´s Day of Prayer.  At the Centre, all are welcome men, women and children to join us and friends from over 170 countries in a common day of prayer.  This year the worship service focuses on “Am I being unfair to you?”  Matthew 20:1-16. Prepared by women of the Philippines. Time 17.00.

Thursday 23^rd March – Coach Excursion to Olvera and Setenil de las Bodegas.   Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar, invites you to join friends on a coach excursion where you will first visit the picturesque town of Olvera, situated north east of Ronda.  The original settlement is more than 2 thousand years old and was added to by the Phoenicians and Romans, followed by the Moors in the 9^th century who held it until King Alfonso XI conquered it in 1327.  On arrival, at approximately 10.30, there will be free time for coffee and to climb to the castle which was constructed at the end of 12th century, mostly in the 13th, on a strategic rock giving the ability to communicate with other nearby castles through signals. Also dominating the area is the Nuestra Señora de la Encarnacioñ church constructed in 1822 and finished in 1843 and is one of the greatest churches of the province and in fact hides one of Andalucía’s best small museums behind its imposing bulk. The town was declared a centre of artistic and historic importance in 1983. You may also visit the Plaza de Andalusia which has a majestic stone fountain/waterfall and great rock garden. In the old part of town its origins are evident with narrow streets, strategic corners, old cottages etc, exposing the visitor to the old architecture of the Muslim town entwined with the modern.

You will leave Olvera at 13.00 for the short half hour drive to the unique village of Setenil de las Bodegas set in a backdrop of huge cliffs, above the Rio Trejo.  The blinding white houses seem to emerge from the rocks; some have rock roofs and even olive groves on their roofs. You will have free time for lunch and a walk around the village departing at approximately 16.15, for the return journey to Torre del Mar arriving at 18.00 approximately.  Lux Mundi suggest that you can research the relevant web sites and tourist offices for more information as to what can be visited and seen during your free time in both towns.  Ticket price 20 Euros available at the Centre.  Proceeds for fund raising.  Departure times Viñuela (Football Pitch) 07.50, Algarrobo (Lidl) 08.15, Caleta (Vets) 08.20, Torre del Mar (Bus Station) 08.30.

What’s on– Trip to the zoo at Castellar de la Frontera

The Phoenix Club are off to the Zoo at Castellar de la Frontera on Friday 17th March 2017.

About the Zoo de Castellar – The ‘zoo’ de Castellar is not your typical zoo.

It was started as a private rescue sanctuary back in 1998 and was finally

opened to the public in 2002.

For years it remained relatively unknown and unvisited. Word of mouth ensuring its survival. Bit-by-bit things are beginning to change.

All of the animals have been rescued by the customs or police.

Its location is of no coincidence, conveniently located near the border; most of the residents were victims of illegal animal smuggling between Europe and Africa.  Some were also rescued from circuses.

From its most famous resident ‘Princessa’, a four month old Bengali Tiger to emus, Vietnamese pot bellied pigs, monkeys, all kinds of birds, a hyena, rabbits, even domestic chickens, the zoo has a wide diversity of animals. Over 500 to be exact, from 120 different species.

The refuge centre opened its doors to the public in 2002, mainly to raise funds for the ever increasing number of animals but also in an attempt to educate visitors to their plight.

The zoo is very open and interactive; we are encouraged to touch and meet the animals.

The facilities are basic and are constantly being updated. You can buy small bags of seeds for 1€ as you enter and can walk around feeding the animals.

There are not many places where you can play with a live tiger or feed lemurs by hand.
