A Big Thank You

I would like to say a big thank you to my very good friends Martyn and Rebecca for not only their support whilst my husband. Charles was in hospital but for staying with me in our home, night and day during his last 48 hours. They helped me through the ensuing week until my family from England arrived.  They really are a truly lovely couple who deserve some recognition for their kindness.

Airport Strikes (Editor warns…)

Airport workers voted for a general strike at 25 airports in Spain in a mass protest against working conditions and low pay.

Car park staff, luggage belt-operators security, IT and retail and catering staff will all down tools on 25 days from September 15th until the end of the year.

The 24 hour strikes have been set for five days in September, seven days in October, two days in November and 11 days in December, including five consecutive days from December 26th to 30th – dates that will cause maximum disruption to Christmas and New Year travellers.

The dates are:

September 15th, 17th, 22nd, 24th and 29th.

October 1st, 6th, 11th, 15th, 27th, 30th and 31st.

November 3rd and 5th.

And December 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 10th & between 26^th-30th inclusive.

Services – Reverse osmosis water treatment. (Response)

Hello My name is Oscar Pinazo, I am well known around Torrox and Axarquia area for repairing electrical and plumbing as well as fitting Osmosis filtration System.

I have many clients who have had this System fitted and I am sure they would be happy to recommend me as well as the System.

Attached is photo of details of how the System works. I can fit this System all included for under 200 euros. Once the System is fitted there are no running costs apart from an annual service.

I would like to point out that bottled water is actually not very good for health, as chemicals from plastic bottles escape into the water especially in hot conditions when it is being transported in the Spanish sunshine.

Gas Bottles – Legal ?

Maybe in light of Barcelona we should stop selling gas bottles, or at least be careful whom we sell them to. I’m fairly sure it’s illegal anyway.

It might not be much in the grand scheme of things but anything we do can make a small difference.

Services- Reverse osmosis water treatment.Opinions Please 

Like many people living in the campo we are reliant on untreated water. We are considering installing a reverse osmosis treatment system, but have read mixed opinions about this. Some say it is not safe to drink water treated this way for any length of time. Within the EU bottled water sold in the supermarkets must not be treated by the reverse osmosis method. But is this ‘overcompensating’?

Do any Digamites have experience of these systems and, if so, what are your opinions?

As I am sure there are other campo dwellers who would like to hear their views, answers please to DigameXtra.

Recommendation- Warning re Vehicles

The UK reg car advertised at €260 is a really good buy so long as the buyer ships it to the UK by transporter.

The biggest problem for UK reg cars in Spain now is, for someone classed as ‘residencia’, you are only allowed to bring a UK reg car, registered in your name, into Spain for up to 30 days. The law is quite clear. If you are stopped, it is up to you to prove the car has been in Spain for less than 30 days. Even though it is fully taxed, insured and MOT’d under UK law. You may need a lawyer?

If the Trafico decide you are residencia and the car has been in Spain for more than 30 days there is an on the spot €500 fine. The car is impounded at a cost of €9 per day. You are then instructed to get the car registered on Spanish plates whilst it is still impounded. This could take a while as it will need some modifications, like headlights and speedo. If a towbar has been fitted you may need to provide manufacturers original documentation and certificate of the fitters competency. Similarly with alloys and tyres. You are not allowed to ship the car out of the country. After 6 months, if the change to Spanish plates is not completed the car is crushed and you pay some €1800 for the storage in the pound. I suppose it may be possible for you to decide to have the car crushed much sooner?

This has been in force for several months now and I haven’t heard of any dire stories or any legal challenges in the courts yet? Has anyone?

Recommendation – Bouquet and Recommendation

Sharon and Chris at Casa El Castano

We have just returned from a 2 night stay at Casa El Castano.

The owners Chris and Sharon are incredibly hospitable and nothing is too much trouble for them. The rooms are beautiful and spotlessly clean.  The evening we arrived, Sharon served us a superbly cooked meal on the terrace, overlooking olive groves . The following night, Chris drove us to and from Martos, to spend the evening there. Martos is the nearest town about 20 minutes drive away. It is lively, typically Spanish with a beautiful park and castle and lots of very nice restaurants. Casa El Castano  is set in a peaceful location,  but within easy access for visiting the historic cities of Jean, Baeza and Ubeda.  All well worth a visit.

Warning re Vehicles

Just feel that your readers should be aware that a car not taxed or Mot’d in it’s country of registration is illegal to drive here, be it English, German, French or the rest. It might be only 260€ but it is still illegal and not alone. If stopped the Guardia will take it away and crush it.

I flew out of Malaga 10 days ago at around midday. Security was busy (20 mins) but not a dicky bird at either of the passport controls.   Martin

I collected my son and family yesterday on a fairly busy airport day at 12.30 and from the Easy jet Landing to them coming through arrivals it was a shade over 30 minutes and this included a breakdown on the allocated luggage carousel in baggage claim.
Parking in the express was €4.25 and apart from people just stopping anywhere to drop off and collect was fine.

I travelled to Manchester last Monday morning from Malaga, the queue for security was larger then normal but they seem to have a new queuing system and I was through in around 20 mins (not bad really) coming back from Manchester seemed to be quieter then normal again around 20 mins which for August is good. We are pleased to announce that from 4th September 2017 the food section of our shop will be managed by and based at

Todo Papel at Avenida de la Constitución, 31, Cómpeta.

Todo Papel will continue provide other items, such as greeting cards, second hand books and their package receiving and mailbox services.
When we opened  in 2005 we knew that to create a successful  business in a mountain village we were going to have to be what my Grandad would call “canny”.

Having the shop in the basement of our house made sense.  However being tucked away without vehicular access was not ideal and over the years the reoccurring message we have heard is “why can’t you move your shop to the bottom of the hill?” The answer has always been because groceries are a low margin product and it is not financially viable. Until now!

So what’s happening to the rest of Sugar and Spice?

Our shop at Calle Cazadores 12, on both sides of the road will remain with seasonal clothes and increased focus on our growing furniture, home decor and gifts business. The freed-up space will allow us to have more ranges of furniture on display and will be filled with lovely, interesting things. We have many new and exciting plans for the shop which we will be rolling out over the next few months, watch this space. So the shop will still be tucked away but we offer free local delivery on furniture so no need to drag your new TV cabinet back down the hill!

Nobody has organized an individuals quiz before, until now!  The Potters Bar in Nerja (opposite the Villa Flamenco hotel) has a weekly quiz night every Tuesday for teams throughout the whole year. Even in the Tuesday night regular teams there are many individual who may feel confident to have a go at this new

It will be a fun quiz whereby each individual will write down their answer and then have their answers marked. It will not be the intention to shame any contestant as only they will know whether they have had a bad night and as quizzers, we know that can happen. So complete anonymity of scores will be upheld.

Dependent on the numbers wanting to try this new format, it is intended to hold heats and then a Grand Final beginning on Wednesday  October 11^th and subsequent Wednesdaysat 7.45pm at the Potters Bar and should be finished by 10pm The top scorers from each heat will go forward to a Grand Final on Wednesday December 6^th at 7.45pm

The cost will be 5 euros per person and all proceeds will go to the CAS animal charity together with a good prize for the overall  winner.

You can register your interest or enter somebody you know who may be back in the UK at present but will be back in the area in October through to December. Contact either Cathy at the Potters Bar or ianbloor@ sky dot com.

The closing entry date is September 29^th and if there is a particular October Wednesday night that you cannot attend pleas let us know when you enter. Entries to include a contactable phone number or email address.

So don’t be shy – give it a try as it is for charity.

Remember, you do not need to be a budding Mastermind or Brain Of Britain expert, because quizzes are always easy if you know the answer.

What’s On –Excursion

to The Rum Factory & Museum at Motril and Afternoon in Salobrena

The Colmenar Social Club are organizing a Coach Trip on Wednesday the 23^rd August to the Rum Factory and Museum of Sugar Cane at Motril, followed by a free afternoon in Salobreña.

The Trip will include a Guided Tour of the Montero Winery / Rum factory  where they will share with us the history of sugar cane and the process and traditional method of extracting of Rum (including tasting).  You will also have the opportunity to visit the nearby Museum of Sugar Cane.

We will then move on for lunch (sadly not included in the price) to Salobreña.   The Historic Old Town of Salobreña is particularly interesting with its 10^th Century Castle and  charming winding lanes and gorgeous views.  Normally very difficult to park in August, so take advantage of this trip.

Cost of this trip:  €22.50 for Non-Members €20.50 for Members.

Pickups from Rio Gordo; 8.45am, Puente don Manuel; 9.00am and El Cruz, Trapiche at 9.15am.

What’s On– III FESTIVAL “NERJA OPEN CITY

MUSIC IN OTHER SPACES”  

“Ventana Abierta. arte, cultura, personas” is organising a different kind of music festival in which we invite you to discover hidden corners of our town. “NERJA OPEN CITY. MUSIC IN OTHER SPACES“, is an original concept that offers concerts in private outdoor spaces that are NOT usually open to the public. We open new doors for you to discover Nerja under the stars.

The success of previous festivals set high standards and impel us to plan each and every concert with meticulous care and attention. We are certain that we are offering you something unique those evenings! Our musical selection for these evenings is, Jazz: Soul & Blues, and Classical Music. Artists: Brown Sugar Quartet and the Quartet Con Fuoco.

The concerts are on: August 30 at 9:30 p.m. Brown Sugar Quartet and September 5 at 9:30 p.m. Quartet Con Fuoco.
