I’m writing in response to your request for information about cancer support East of Malaga.
I’m the co-founder of Fernando’s Friends. We are a support group for people experiencing loss, that includes bereavement, ill-health, loss of confidence.

We have members who have experience of caring for partners with terminal cancer, as well as a qualified nurse, qualified psychologist and other volunteers. We aim to offer support, which could be practical (e.g. giving a carer a break), or emotional (e.g. talking to someone who can empathise with a situation) and can offer information as needed.
We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at Nerja Club Hotel at 3.30 (Near the conservatory) and also hold a weekly games morning on Thursdays at 11.30 at Nerja Club Hotel (aimed at people who are isolated at home).

After 12 years it is with regret that we have to announce that we will be stopping the sale of newspapers and magazines. The last day of sales will be Saturday 2^nd September.

Many factors have contributed to this decision primarily declining sales due to changes in distribution of a large number of publications earlier this year, technology and how individuals access their news and increasing costs.  Unfortunately, it is no longer financially viable to offer this service.

We will continue to stock and sell our other core items such as greetings cards,  second hand books and of course our PO Box and parcel receiving services.  We are also very excited to be introducing a new product range which will take the place of newspapers – more over the next couple of weeks.

Recommendation- Jeff of Pooltec

We have been rescued once again by Jeff of Pooltec.

Our pool turned completely green with algae, probably after a visit from two young grandsons who swan almost continuously for three weeks. They were rather well protected with sunscreen which was a contributing factor to the algae.

After a visit from Jeff and some excellent advice, the pool is now glass like and very tempting in this heat.

I can really recommend this extremely helpful chap.

What’s On –Cudeca have a Cancer Support Group in Nerja and one also in Competa.

The Nerja one meets once a month in Cafeteria Cavana (directly across from rear of the Church).   We usually meet second Thursday of each month, however not July and August – so next meeting will be 14th September at 11.30 a.m.   Help and assistance is also available from the Cudeca centre  cudeca@cudeca.org  or telephone   95 256 4190.

Sorry I don’t know details about meetings in Competa, but you will probably hear from them too.

Trip to Gibraltar – Friday 6^th October

The Phoenix Club are off on their next shopping trip to Gibraltar on Friday the 4^th August

We have pick ups at the A1 Garden Centre, Torre del Mar bus station and finally at Algarrobo Lidl at 08.30.  The bus is parked in Morrisons car park and we leave Gibraltar at 16.30.  Due to visa restrictions on entering Gibraltar, please advise if you are a non EU citizen when you book.  Also it is important to remember to bring with you your EHIC card, just in case, and passports are essential.  On the way to Gibraltar we stop to spend a penny and for coffee.

We would greatly appreciate if payment was made before the journey.

The price?  €12pp includes a €1 gratuity for the driver.  Children under 12 can join us for 1/2 price.   Still the best value on the coast!
Early booking is recommended if you like a particular place, as seat numbers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Plenty to see in Gibraltar apart from the shopping!

Like many of you I am a lover of good food. The other day I was pleasantly surprised by the new Belgian-Dutch restaurant named Happy Days along the Paseo Marítimo in Torrox-Costa, just on the corner with Avenida Europa. All food is freshly made using the best ingredients, so sometimes you will need to have patience that will surely be rewarded once you start enjoying the food. The very good sea view is of course an extra. Since last week they also offer delicious (not dry!) roast chicken to eat on site or to take away. Famous Belgian beers also offered. Staff are multilingual.

Did anyone see the Mothership last night? 

OK, seriously, I was woken up at around 2am last night by a very bright light in the sky. I leapt to the window (admittedly without my glasses), and couldn’t see the source of the light but I could see from its moving shadow that it must have tracked across the sky.

Probably not an alien visitation… perhaps more likely to be a ‘fireball’ from the Perseid meteor shower, but far brighter than I’ve ever seen. Perhaps more like the Chelyabinsk meteor from 2013.

Missing Kitten

This is a long shot, but you never know?

Has anyone seen or even picked up a cute little black and white kitten in the Vinuela/Puente Don Manuel area. It has now been missing for two weeks. Its two siblings came back after one week and are doing fine….

It has a distinctive off centre black patch on the nose, a bit wonky. By the way, anyone that has picked it up is welcome to keep it, we’d just like to know.

Help Wanted- Internet technician required please

For years we were restricted to 2.5Mbs for internet access, we had a lot of problems with the network slowing down, especially at peak times.  Then fibre optic, nominally, 300Mbs came to our town and we converted.  Mainly a great improvement, I have measured as much as 250Mbs wired direct to the router with a new cat 6 cable, but nothing like that on WiFi.  And of course all our equipment is not that new, while we have bought  new cat 6 cables we  have Kodi boxes, we also have older laptops, we have a homeplug extension, we have  a repeater, so elsewhere the speed is far lower.  We also run a VPN which may interfere.

Somehow, sometimes, this combination results in an unreliable service.  I have been running a network up time monitor and I can’t really come to a conclusion from the logs though I have some theories.

I am reluctant to send for the service supplier as they will simply walk away and charge if they can claim it is ‘not their fault’.

I am far from ignorant in such matters but this is getting beyond me!

So, can anyone recommend a network technician who would help us get a stable solution?  Or are you such a technician?

The Trouble with Chester 

Chester recently came to Animal Healing as a Border, staying with us for two weeks of rehabilitation. Chester is a Mastine cross and extremely large. The original contact was because of his aggression towards other dogs and when Chester launches himself he is extremely hard to restrain. When seen and evaluated at his house Chester wore a muzzle as he was a danger to the other dogs he lived with, but danger is not what Steven saw.

“When I first took Chester for a short walk and to observe him, I did not see an aggressive dog, I saw one living in fear. He had an over exagerated wide mouthed pant and dialated pupils, and it was not because of the heat. He was delivered to me two weeks later. He was taken for a short walk to get rid of any stored up energy and then taken back to the Healing Centre. His reaction to our other dogs was not aggression, but fear. I let him roam around the property to familiarise himself and as soon as he was able, he found somewhere to hide. Steven Rowles Animal Healing got to work straight away. Chester was taken to run the gauntlet, to highlight all of his issues and fears. His backstory was that he had a miserable life on the the streets of Santander, from where he was rescued. A dog this size would be obvious to anyone and an obvious target for abuse. That soon showed itself when Chester showed how petrified he was of bicycles, scooters and general traffic. Walking him was not an easy process, as he was in panic the whole time. The trouble with Chester is he was suffering with PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Yes animals can have this to. Unlike us they cannot relate how they feel, it is up to us to observe and discover. Chesters panic even showed itself back at the centre and he had to be taught to take time out and calm down quite quickly.

Over the course of his stay he learnt to cope with his fears and how better to deal with them. He is now able to deal with bicycles and scooters in a less reactionary way. He has learnt to play, have fun and most of all relax. He is now free and able to be a dog and is learning to deal with other dogs without fear turning to aggression.

Help Wanted-Transport

Hello, a lot of times you can find adverts about cycling groups, petanque groups, etc.
Now I propose, to create a group to enjoy karaoke ( it is free).
We could meet 2 or 3 days a month in a bar to sing together and
we even could organise a barbecue day, every 3 months.
On the BBQ day, we could do other activities, like playing cards, dice,
petanque, darts, ping pong … we could choose some games and make little
competitions.

Can anyone help? My Samsung tab3, starts up and works fine until I plug in my Samsung charger unit. Then it just shuts down and I’m unable to start the Samsung until I unplug the charger. This also happens when I plug  the Samsung USB into my laptop. This also shuts the Samsung down, when I unplug USB it startups no problem. So upset over the brutal killing of those tiny kittens. Can anyone give some indication as to who did this as whoever is responsible needs to be punished.

Wanted- News of Missing Repairman…..
Sometime in May, we noticed a recommendation on DigamExtra by a person called Diana, for an expert kitchen and bathroom fitter. We called him, he came and spent three hours with us detailing how we would redo our kitchen. He started work beginning of June and did such a good job, we had him do other jobs throughout the house up until last Thursday.

Last Thursday, 27 July, we shook hands and said: “See you tomorrow.”

He never showed up and has not answered the phone since then; it either rings endlessly or we get a message indicating that his line is not currently available, can we call back later.

He had always answered his phone, even on Sunday, so we are worried.

His name is Wayne Newton and lives with his wife and daughter in a townhouse in Frigiliana, drives a van and sometimes an Audi.

Recommendation- Torre del Mar Airshow

I’d like to reiterate what Rita said about driving/parking for the Torre del Mar Air show; a little planning with something Google Maps, and it shouldn’t be difficult or stressful. There’s acres (OK hectares) of parking to the west of town, and it was well organised.

The air show is now a world-class event, and everyone involved should be proud. The only quibble I had was that I was unable to find the timetable of events on the official website.

And I must add thanks to the skills of the pilots, who put on a fantastic display… mark it in your diaries for 2018!

What’s On– Lux Mundi Outing

Monday thru Friday 25th to 29th September – Coach Excursion to Cáceres, Mérida and Badajoz.  Please come and join friends of Lux Mundi on a joint excursion, from both centres in Torre del Mar and Fuengirola, to Cáceres, Mérida and Badajoz from Monday 25th until Friday 29th September 2017. They will be staying in the 4* Hotel Agora Cáceres for 4 nights on a B&B basis. This modern hotel is located next to the Plaza Mayor and is a 2-minute walk from the old town. Travel will be by coach on the Monday with stops for breakfast and lunch on route, arriving early afternoon in Cáceres. The rest of the day and the following day there will be free time to explore this interesting city in western Spain’s Extremadura region, founded by the ancient Romans with a mix of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, with cobbled medieval streets, fortified houses and palaces.

On the Wednesday there will be guided visits of both Mérida and Badajoz, Mérida founded by the Romans in the 1st century B.C. with its famous and still-used Teatro Romano, which has a double tier of columns rising onstage. Also the ancient Puente Romano, a 792m bridge spanning the Río Guadiana and Badajoz situated close to the Portuguese border with Arab walls, the Alcazaba, Plaza Alta and interesting monuments.

On Thursday morning the group will travel to the Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where there will be a guided visit and afterwards the coach will travel to Trujillo where the afternoon will be free to explore the sights and to have lunch. Trujillo contains an important group of churches, castles and manor houses that are built around the Plaza Mayor square and which are declared Property of Cultural Interest.

The return journey will take place after breakfast on the Friday with stops on route for coffee and lunch arriving back in Torre del Mar at 17.00 approximately. Ticket Price 348€pp double room, 398€pp single room. Deposit 100€ when booking at the Centre. Final payment before first week September. We will need the number and expiry date of Passport. DNI or residence card when you book. Included in the price are all travel expenses, insurance, 4 nights’ bed and breakfast and all guided visits. Departures: Viñuela (F.
