DoctorLaptop’s Computer Repairs & Services: Have your computer properly maintained with an annual professional servicing to keep it clean, running cool and thus extend its life. You don’t wait till your car engine freezes before you change your oil, now do you? If you do, the repair costs far more than the oil changes you skipped. It’s the same with computers. An inexpensive annual maintenance service is far cheaper than waiting until the device is annoyingly slow and popping up error messages, and thus in need of an expensive repair. Protect your computer & your privacy with annual servicing. The Doctor is closed on weekends. Note: “Sudden Death Syndrome” (SDS) – Every day the newspapers are carrying multiple articles about “Sudden Death Syndrome” victims. Most of these articles are about young to middle aged performers or athletes, many dying on stage or during events; articles about unknowns dying are not considered news worthy. But if this many public figures are victims, there must be way more average people falling victim that we don’t hear about. The articles that mention blood clots, heart attacks or vax reactions as the cause of death in previously healthy people are particularly concerning. However… – I have no intention of posting about all these deaths in DigameXtra, far too depressing. Spanish politics provides more than enough depressing content for me to deal with daily. – The EuroWeelkyNews, as well as the UK scandal rags, carry these SDS death notices everyday if you want to have a look. Today, the EWN has no fewer than 5 such articles on the homepage of their news website, one article listing 3 GAA hurlers as recent SDS victims. I will only post these articles if a major celebrity or player is the victim. -Ed.

The Supreme Court backs lower sentences for sex offenders due to the ‘only yes is yes’ law, but insists on analyzing sentences on a case-by-case basis: {Translation, summary} 29/11/2022 14:19 – The Supreme Court has opened the door to the courts being able to reduce sentences for sexual offenders in application of the so-called “only yes is yes law” in the event that the new law provides for lower sentences than the previous Penal Code, although it has insisted that this cannot be done “globally”, but must be done “on a case by case basis”. – However, it makes it clear that it is necessary to analyze “case by case” and that it cannot be done “globally”, and that the reductions can be applied both in cases pending trial, as in appeals or cassation of sentences already handed down, as well as in resolutions that are already final. Census results 2021- Christianity shrinking in England and Wales: – Just 46.2% of the population described themselves as Christian on census day, 21 March last year, down from 59.3% a decade earlier, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. The survey was filled out by more than 24m households across England and Wales – and covers ethnicity, religion, national identity and language. – The percentage of people saying they had no religion jumped from around a quarter in 2011 (25.2%) to over a third in 2021 (37.2%). This was the second most common response and the number ticking this box has almost trebled since 2001. There were increases in the proportion of people describing themselves as Muslim (up from 4.9% to 6.5%) and Hindu (from 1.5% to 1.7%). London remains the most religiously diverse region of England, with just over a quarter (25.3%) of people on the day of the 2021 census reporting a religion other than Christian. Netherlands to close up to 3,000 farms to comply with EU rules: {The Telegraph} 28 November 2022, 4:02pm – The Dutch government plans to buy and close down up to 3,000 farms near environmentally sensitive areas to comply with EU nature preservation rules. The Netherlands is attempting to cut down its nitrogen pollution and will push ahead with compulsory purchases if not enough farms take up the offer voluntarily. – Farmers will be offered a deal “well over” the worth of the farm, according to the government plan that is targeting the closure of 2,000 to 3,000 farms or other major polluting businesses. Earlier leaked versions of the plan put the figure at 120 per cent of the farm’s value but that figure has not yet been confirmed by ministers. – “There is no better offer coming,” Christianne van der Wal, nitrogen minister, told MPs on Friday. She said compulsory purchases would be made with “pain in the heart”, if necessary. ** Biodiversity under threat? ** – The Netherlands needs to reduce its emissions to comply with EU conservation rules and agriculture is responsible for almost half the nitrogen emitted in the proud farming nation. – The Dutch environment agency has warned that native species are disappearing faster in the Netherlands than in the rest of Europe and that biodiversity is under threat. – Farmers fear that the plan to slash emissions by 2030 will cost them their livelihoods, oppose any compulsory purchases and argue farming is unfairly targeted while other sectors such as aviation are not. – Opposition leader Geert Wilders published a letter July 6, 2022, from the provincial government of Flevoland (pic). It states that the government will set up “a registration center for asylum seekers” on agricultural land expropriated by the devastating nitrogen laws. Full Telegraph Article Here. Expats rank the best and worst European cities in 2022 for careers, social life and safety: – The Expat Insider 2022 report analysed 50 expat destinations around the world and ranked them according to the quality of life for expats. The survey asked expats to evaluate the ease of settling in, working abroad and personal finances in the city where they lived. The ranking also includes an Expat Essentials index, which looks at digital life, admin topics, housing, and language. This year, four European cities made it into the top ten. – Valencia (pic) comes in as the best city in the world for expats in 2022. – Lisbon came in fourth in the overall rankings, but was one of the highest rated for the weather. – Paris comes in second last in the rankings of best cities for expats, criticised for expensive housing and high cost of living. Those surveyed also said they found local residents unfriendly and struggled to make friends. Photo: Trickful. UK Labour Leader Says There Are No Chances of Return of Free Movement With EU: – In spite of having supported the idea of keeping the freedom of movement between the United Kingdom and the 27 European Union countries three years ago, the leader of the Labour Party of the UK, Keir Starmer, now claims that the return of the policy is a “red line” for the party he leads. – In an interview for the Mail on Sunday, the Labour leader also ruled out the possibility of introducing a “Swiss-style” deal with the EU, through which the UK would have access to the single market in exchange for opening its borders for EU citizens to move to its territory under facilitated rules. “A Swiss deal simply wouldn’t work for Britain. We’ll have a stronger trading relationship, and we’ll reduce red tape for British business – but freedom of movement is a red line for me. It was part of the deal of being in the EU, but since we left, I’ve been clear it won’t come back under my government,” Starmer told the Mail. Whatsapp Hacked – 487million Users Data Exposed (¼ of all WhatsApp users!) ***Check Your Number Now*** – On 16 November, a database of phone numbers of 487 million Whatsapp users was put up for sale. – The coveted list, of which ELEVEN MILLION NUMBERS WERE FROM SPAIN, is on a hacking forum, leaving the numbers exposed for cybercriminal activities such as smishing** and vishing* and also massive spam campaigns & unwanted advertising. – Finding out if your number or email is on the list is very easy thanks to Cybernews, a cybersecurity media that has a search engine with “a 500 GB database of the phone numbers & emails”. – To check, just enter your phone number or email address in the search engine ( https://cybernews.com/personal-data-leak-check/ ) and hit ‘Check Now’. This will check if you have been exposed in this recent data breach, or any of the other recent major hacking events like those at Fakebook/Meta (533 million) and Linkedin (500 million). If your details are on the list, the results page will tell you how to change your passwords and implement new security methods. – If you have old, abandoned email accounts, which you never shut down properly, that may still contain private emails, you should check those too. If they are on the hacked list, you may want to contact the email service to shut them, even if it is a big hassle. It’s possible for hackers to use these old email accounts to impersonate you, opening the door to all kinds of mischief. – The threat actor told Cybernews they were selling the US dataset for $7,000, the UK – $2,500, and Germany – $2,000. ***Phishing is an attack in which the threat actor poses as a trusted person or organization to trick potential victims into sharing sensitive information or sending them money. **Smishing is a form of phishing in which an attacker uses a compelling text message to trick targeted recipients into clicking a link and sending the attacker private information or downloading malicious programs to a smartphone. *Vishing is a different attack that falls under the general phishing umbrella and shares the same goals. Vishers use fraudulent phone numbers, voice-altering software, text messages, and social engineering to trick users into divulging sensitive information. Vishing generally uses voice to trick users. Irish Regulator Fines Fakebook $277 Million for Leak of Half a Billion Users’ Data, 4th huge fine for FB in Ireland since 2019: – Fakebook engineers can’t be this stupid. They are abusing the public intentionally, and fines are seen as an operating expense. – The fines follow an inquiry initiated by the European regulator on April 14, 2021, close on the heels of a leak of a giant “collated dataset of Facebook personal data that had been made available on the internet.” – This included the personal information associated with 533 million users of the social media platform, such as their phone numbers, dates of birth, locations, email addresses, gender, marital status, account creation date, and other profile details. – The Irish watchdog, besides imposing a monetary penalty, also ordered Meta’s Irish unit to make sure its processing complies with the E.U. data protection laws. Spain’s pensioners will have an extra 1,300 euros in 2023 with the 8.5% increase: The CPI data for November confirms the Government’s estimate of revaluation, which implies that retirees will receive a salary of 1,365 euros per month, 107 euros more than now. It’s practically final now. Contributory pensions will rise by 8.5% in 2023, the increase that the Government had estimated in the Budgets. This is how it corroborates the CPI in advance for the month of November that the INE made public this Tuesday, although we will have to wait for confirmation with the final figure, which normally does not vary, or at most one tenth up or down. The Andalusian Medical Union threatens a strike in health centers for January 27: {Translation, summary} – The Andalusian Medical Union (SMA) has agreed in assembly to initiate mobilisations to demand improvements in primary care medicine, which will begin with a rally on 30 November in front of the Health Delegation in Malaga, followed by rallies in front of the San Telmo Palace in Seville on 16 December and 12 January. If no progress is made in the negotiations, the SMA assembly agreed to call a first day of strike action on 27 January. – For the Medical Union, “it is necessary to put an end to the vicious circle of “precariousness, a drain of doctors, overburdened care. This situation is leading to collapse. It is necessary to improve the working conditions of family doctors in order to retain these professionals and attract new ones. Otherwise, the increase in the number of places in medical schools or in the MIR in family medicine or paediatrics will be useless.” Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/sevilla/sindicato-medico-andaluz-amenaza-huelga-centros-salud-20221128112431-nts.html
AXARQUIA
La Viñuela reservoir equals its all-time low: 9.2% of capacity: – It is hoped that the long-awaited rains, forecast to fall in the province from Thursday 1 December, will help increase the drastically low levels of La Viñuela reservoir, on the eastern Costa del Sol. – This stands at 9.2 per cent of capacity (15.2 cubic hectometres), equalling the lowest ever level previously recorded, which was 14 years ago on 31 October 2008. – The Axarquia’s main reservoir supplies 14 municipalities and about 220,000 inhabitants, and until last 1 October, when measures were introduced, it irrigated about 6,300 hectares of subtropical crops and greenhouses. – The current rate of consumption is about 0.2 cubic hectometres a week. Technicians from the regional government who manage the reservoir estimate that approximately six cubic hectometres could still be extracted for human consumption, but further extractions would not be technically feasible due to sludge and mud. SEVILLA
The United States is the main country of origin of tourists to Sevilla: {Translation, summary} – October, which is usually the month with the highest number of visitors of the year in Sevilla, received 21,445 travellers from the United States, according to INE data. This number is 1.7% higher than that recorded in October 2019. And, although there are still more overnight stays by French travellers than Americans, it is the first month of the year in which the latter have risen above the pre-pandemic level. In other words, the US has taken the lead in the number of visitors, ahead of France, marking a milestone in terms of international tourism. – In fact, the highest growth corresponds to North American tourism, with increases of 150% compared to the same month in 2021, a percentage that doubles the second fastest growing market, the United Kingdom. This progress comes after a September in which the increase in tourists from the USA was 172% and which was joined by 490% more travellers from Canada. Hawaii volcano, world’s largest, erupts for first time in decades: – Hawaii’s Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano in the world, has erupted for the first time in nearly 40 years, US authorities said, as emergency crews went on alert early Monday. – Flows of lava remained “contained” within the summit caldera of Mauna Loa, but the eruption could pose a threat to nearby residents should conditions change, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported at 11:45 pm local time Sunday (9:45 GMT Monday) some 15 minutes after the eruption inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Spain is the second favourite country for Americans to move to: – Many Americans have already made the move over here and Spain is the European country with the most US residents. – According to a study by American insurance company Home Shield based on Google searches, Spain is the second most popular country for US nationals to move to. – The first is Canada, which is most likely due to the fact it’s next to the US and it shares the same language and has a similar culture. – “People in 31 cities, mostly in Texas and California, are currently looking for information on how to move to Spain,” American Home Shield revealed. – Texas and California along with Florida are among the US states where you’ll find the most Spanish speakers, so it’s perhaps understandable that people from there would want to look for a country where they can already speak the language. But Spain was also the most searched relocation country in Georgia, Arkansas, New Hampshire and North Dakota. – The current strong dollar against the euro could also be influencing why Spain is so high on the list, as evidenced by the spike in US tourists who came to Spain this summer. In June alone, more than 377,000 visited Spain, an 86.9 percent rise compared to the same month in 2019, a pre-pandemic year. HEALTH
Children who eat pesticide-treated food suffer from earlier puberty, more susceptible to cancer and other disorders later in life: {Translation} – Fruit and vegetables can become a long-term health hazard for children. Although it may seem untrue, this has been demonstrated in a study by the University of Granada, which points to the pesticides and fungicides with which these foods are treated as the main culprit. This would have two direct consequences: the first is the acceleration of puberty. The second, a result of the previous one, a higher risk of suffering breast cancer in the future, but also many other disorders in childhood itself. – The study was carried out in the Spanish child population over 22 years, studying each case from pregnancy to adolescence. The authors presented the results after years of data collection on Monday. 606 girls and 933 boys, aged between 7 and 11 years, took part in the study, which focused mainly on urine samples. According to the results, it is the girls who are most affected by this early puberty, especially in terms of breast development. In boys, this is mainly reflected in the genitalia. – The study, published in the scientific journal Environmental Pollution, has involved several institutions. The ibs.GRANADA and CIBERESP researcher, Carmen Freire, responsible for the publication, points out that “very few studies have investigated to date the relationship between exposure to pesticides in current use and the age at which puberty appears in girls and boys”. In a way, they were going in blind in this respect. “This is despite the fact that early pubertal development is frequently observed in paediatric clinics, especially in girls, and its causes are not well understood,” summarises Freire. – The results are devastating in terms of the effect that pesticide and fungicide residues, up to 40% of which are accepted by the European Union in foodstuffs, have on children. Nicolás Olea, professor in the Department of Radiology and Physical Medicine at the UGR and another of the authors of the study, laments a fact that is largely unknown to consumers. – “We say it over and over again: this is not healthy. If it had been handled properly, 63% of Spanish children would not be pissing plastic or pesticides. Some in 60% of the urine, others in 50% or in 40 or 30%. This should never have happened.” – In this respect, it is worth noting that Spain is the largest consumer of pesticides in the European Union (EU), using 77,700 tonnes of pesticides in 2020, including 34,000 tonnes of fungicides, the largest group. Pesticides are used in agricultural production, as well as in urban and domestic settings. The main route of exposure in the general population is through diet, which is where the study points to, especially through the consumption of conventionally produced fruit and vegetables. – Once in the human body, these pesticides are rapidly metabolised and eliminated in the urine. Experimental studies suggest that some non-persistent pesticides may act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals, known as endocrine disruptors. Increased exposure to these endocrine disruptors in recent decades is precisely the main risk factor for pubertal advancement. – Some of these pesticides referred to in the study have been banned in Europe in the last two years. Specifically by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), although for a long time they have contributed to placing Spain in the top positions in the use of pesticides. – Unfortunately, Olea insists, other pesticides and fungicides are taking their place. “It is striking that, once banned because of their toxicity, nothing is done to remedy the damage caused by those who put them on the market. We urge the EU to be proactive, to use the precautionary principle. Once exposure has been proven, the consequences must be anticipated”. Conservatives Push Back On Socialist Agenda- Vox & PP pack Plaza de Colón with 25,000 to demand President Sánchez’s resignation, “He wants to crush everything”: {Translation, summary} 27/11/2022 15:12 – Thousands of people called by right wing Vox party have gathered this Sunday in the Plaza de Colón in Madrid and in other provincial capitals to demand the resignation of Pedro Sánchez as head of the government for his “generosity with the seditious and embezzlers”. The leader of the party, Santiago Abascal, accused the president of being a “demolition boss who wants to crush everything” and criticized the government for victimizing itself “with the little stunt of Irene Montero”. The Government Delegation in Madrid counted the attendance in the capital to 25,000 participants. – Vox launched these demonstrations after the government announced its intention to reform the Penal Code to eliminate the crime of sedition, which until now has been punished with prison sentences of up to 15 years, and to introduce a new crime of “aggravated public disorder”, which reduces the punishment to five years. (This is a concession by Sanchez to the Catalan Independence movement, to shorten the sentences of those jailed in the violent independence protests. The conservatives are vehemently against this. -Ed.) – During his speech, the president of Vox accused Pedro Sánchez of being “implacable” when it comes to taxing the population, while he behaves with “generosity” towards “seditious and embezzlers”. Abascal has listed a long list of reasons that, in his opinion, justify demanding the resignation of the president of the government, such as rising prices and energy bills, insecurity and taxes. “There is no welfare, security, guaranteed property, basic freedom, solid and independent institutions, guaranteed national unity, sovereignty or real democracy”, lamented Abascal, who accused Sánchez of being “at the service of spurious and minority interests”. – In the opinion of the leader of Vox, the Executive works “against the Spaniards and handed over to each and every one of the enemies of Spain”, which prevents the State from “prospering”. Abascal has pronounced these words before thousands of people who have occupied the popular Madrid square and its surroundings carrying Spanish flags and banners with proclamations such as ‘Sánchez traitor, respect your nation’ or ‘Spain wants to vote’. There were also numerous Vox flags and some from the Solidarity trade union. – On Saturday, the Popular Party held its own event, also in Madrid, under the title ‘In defence of a great country’ and as a protest against the repeal of the crime of sedition. In it, Feijóo, and the leader of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, vowed to defeat Pedro Sánchez at the polls in 2023 in the face of his “servility” with the nationalists and the legislative “botches” of the Executive, as with the law of the ‘only yes is yes’. (Note: The ‘only yes is yes’ law turns out to be a “botch” with an attractive title; this was one of the recently passed laws that the public was not allowed to see in its entirety until it was passed. It turns out that mixed in with some provisions strengthening women’s rights, it also contains provisions that help sex offenders get retroactive sentencing changes that, to some feminists dismay, is causing many sex offenders to get years knocked off their sentences. Across Spain, judges are now reviewing requests for reconsideration of past sex offence convictions, and in many cases are knocking 3-5yrs off sentences, in some cases far more, details in next article. Victims are upset that their abusers are being released early, some claiming it puts them in renewed danger. Not quite the law the public was expecting. -Ed.) The Supreme Court reviews the Arandina case over “only yes is yes” law controversy- was it “sex assault” or “sex abuse”: {Some passages re-translated for accuracy} – The Supreme Court, considering the application of the “law of only yes is yes”, reviews this Tuesday the sentence in which a former Arandina soccer player has been acquitted after being previously sentenced to 38 years in prison and two others saw their sentences reduced to 3 and 4 years when the judges saw only sexual abuse and non-aggression. – The judges did so because they did not consider the existence of intimidation to be proven – a key element to contemplate sexual assault – and described the facts as sexual abuse with the mitigation of the closeness of age and maturity of the defendants and the victim, with lower penalties than a sexual assault. The debate on whether or not this mitigation should be applied will be key in the Supreme Court. Why Spain’s right is vehemently opposed to changes to sedition law: – Spain’s right-wing opposition is infuriated over government plans to abolish sedition, the charge used against Catalan separatist leaders, decrying the move as a gift to pro-independence parties in exchange for parliamentary support. – Right-wing parties say eliminating sedition – the charge used to convict and jail nine Catalan separatists over their involvement with a failed 2017 independence bid – will pave the way for another attempt to separate from Spain. – Initially condemned to between nine and 13 years behind bars, the separatists were pardoned last year by the leftist government, drawing fury from the Spanish right. Spain’s Leftist PM elected president of Socialist International: – Spain’s prime minister Pedro Sánchez was elected as the new president of Socialist International on Friday. – The Socialist Party (PSOE) leader, 50, took over from former Greek PM George Papandreou during a congress in Madrid, Spain’s capital. He ran unopposed. – “If there is one word that sums up what it is to be a socialist, a social democrat (…) it is to act. To act means to rebel against resignation and give reasons for confidence in the face of the pessimism that the right wing and reactionary movements in national and international politics seek to promote,” Sánchez said. – He will be the first Spaniard to take the role. FOLLOW UP- Regarding Two Recently Posted Articles Announcing Major Spanish Gov’t Computer Database Hacks involving The Ministry of the Economy and The Ministry of Justice: – While the mainstream media in Spain have dropped these stories after they made initial reports, the alternative news is warning of a huge coverup. Here is an example, a quote from voziberica.com, however, I cannot confirm all their claims, so this is for educational purposes only. Consult your professional advisors if you are concerned your confidential data has been exposed. -Ed. – {Voziberica} “The most important news of the last weeks and months and, surely, of the year, is the biggest hack in the history of our country: It happened in the second half of last October, and since then the attackers have had ALL the Identity Documents, income statements, bank accounts, addresses, working lives, business relationships and EVERYTHING you can imagine for ALL Spaniards. The hackers have a complete copy of all the databases of the services of the Tax Agency, Social Security, the Public Employment Service and even the General Directorate of the Police, Immigration and the DGT. With these data, the Spanish population is at risk of fraud, looting, accusations, impersonation… and everything you can imagine. (Scammers will use confidential info to gain your trust as they pretend to be an agency/bank you do use, and then use that trust to exploit you in some manner. After all, if they know how much you paid in taxes last year, they must be an official agency, right? Well, it ain’t necessarily so… -Ed.) The National Court and the CNI have named this as an event ‘of national interest’ and, even so, Pedro Sánchez has been hiding this from the Spanish for a month.” Full article, English (If it appears in Spanish, click the American flag in the upper right of the page to change to English): https://www.voziberica.com/muy-urgente-pueden-quitarte-el-dinero-si-no-haces-esto-porque-han-hackeado-al-ministerio-de-economia-y-hacienda/

Goodbye to airplane mode- the EU will allow you to connect to the internet with your mobile phone’s 5G on flights: {Translation} – Airlines within the European Union will be able to install 5G technology on their planes, allowing passengers to use their mobile phones and other connected devices just as they do on the ground. As reported by The Brussels Times, the European Commission has brought mobile communications legislation into line with the latest standards. As a result, 5G coverage may also be available on aeroplanes. “The sky is no longer the limit when it comes to high-speed, high-capacity connections,” said EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton. – “5G will enable innovative services for people and growth opportunities for European businesses,” added Thierry Breton. 5G coverage will be available through the installation of a ‘picocell’ on the aircraft. Through that network station, phone calls, text messages and data traffic can be sent via a satellite network to a mobile network on the ground. – On the other hand, the European Commission also wants to open up the 5 GHz frequencies to wifi in cars, buses and other means of transport. EU member states have until 30 June 2023 to make the 5 GHz bands accessible for road transport. Tracked as CVE-2022-4135, the high-severity vulnerability has been described as a heap buffer overflow in the GPU component. – Users are recommended to upgrade to version 107.0.5304.121 for macOS and Linux and 107.0.5304.121/.122 for Windows to mitigate potential threats. – Users of Chromium-based browsers such as Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi are also advised to apply the fixes as and when they become available. – Popular high-security, modified versions of Chrome browser, “UnGoogled Chromium” and “Iron Browser”, are probably not vulnerable to this type of attack, but it can’t hurt to update these too. These are the bus routes in Spain which will be free for commuters: There is some good news for those who travel by bus in Spain- the government has announced that many long-distance routes will be free of charge for regular users next year. The Minister of Transport said this Friday morning (25 Nov) that the scheme which already exists, whereby local and medium-distance train journeys are free for passengers who do them regularly, is to be extended to long-distance bus travel as well. The aim is to encourage people to leave their cars at home and use public transport, as well as to help offset the cost of living crisis. HEALTH
Waiting lists rise by 10% with more than 740,000 people waiting for surgery: {Translation} 25/11/2022, 13:14 – Spain’s public health system has reached its highest ever number of patients on the waiting list for non-urgent surgery in the SNS as a whole, with 742,518 patients, up 81,356 more than a year ago (10.96%), according to the latest Spanish National Health System (SNS) report, which puts the average waiting time at 113 days, 8 days less than a year ago. – On the other hand, 17.6% of patients had been on the waiting list for more than 6 months, according to the latest data collected as of 30 June 2021. However, as the Ministry of Health highlights, after the increases experienced in the first pandemic waves, delays have decreased appreciably compared to the situation prior to the pandemic: the average waiting time is reduced by 8 days and the percentage of patients who have been on the waiting list for more than six months is 2.3 points lower than in December 2019. – As usual, the speciality with the highest number of patients is Traumatology with 187,404 patients on the waiting list, followed by Ophthalmology with 159,218 patients. Meanwhile, the speciality with the lowest number of patients is Thoracic Surgery, with 2,355, followed by Cardiac Surgery with 3,304. – The specialities with the longest average waiting times are Plastic Surgery with 226 days and Neurosurgery with 193 days. Meanwhile, Dermatology with 63 days and Cardiac Surgery with 75 days are the specialities with the shortest average waiting times. – The 11 clinical processes specifically monitored in this information system have an average waiting time of 90 days. The average delay recorded for cataract surgery, one of the most frequent procedures, is 70 days. Surgery for benign prostatic hypertrophy is 131 days and hallux valgus (“bunionette”) surgery 122 days. – It should be noted that, with the exception of the first pandemic year, around 3.7 million surgeries are performed annually in SNS hospitals, including both those that are scheduled on the waiting list and those that are not scheduled or urgent. – This six-month period has seen a higher number of both waiting list admissions and departures per procedure compared to the previous two years, during the pandemic, and even a higher number of admissions than in the first half of 2019, the year prior to the pandemic. – With regard to waiting times for first consultations with the different specialists, these are higher than in previous years. Overall, the average waiting time is 79 days, 4 days longer than in the same period of the previous year. – There are several specialities whose average waiting times are around three months: Neurology with 97 days, Dermatology with 84 days, Digestive with 84 days and Traumatology with 82 days. – On the other hand, patients for Gynaecology have an average waiting time for consultation of 52 days and for General Surgery it is 55 days. The report includes, together with the overall indicators of the waiting lists of the SNS, the breakdown by Autonomous Community. AXARQUIA
Farmers propose declaring region a catastrophic area due to drought: {Translation} – Farmers propose that the Axarquía be declared a catastrophic area because of the drought. According to the sector, 15% of the avocado and mango plantations have already dried up due to lack of irrigation. Francisco Pineda, guardian of the Benamargosa river irrigation community, recalled that in the area of ??influence of the La Viñuela reservoir, barely one liter per square meter has been collected so far this autumn. Added to this is the fact that it is about to be two months since agricultural irrigation from the reservoir was prohibited, currently at 9.3% of its total capacity. – Speaking to Cadena SER Málaga y Axarquía, he pointed out that “we have no water. It is a ruin. Each farmer is trying to save the plantations as best he can. Some are paying for bucket lorries. Others are considering selling their plots. The wells are dry. And we can hardly give a little water to the field every ten or fifteen days, which is not enough. Between 10 and 15 % of the trees have already dried up. In addition, he also recalls that “there are very few insured farms”. – In his words, ‘we are suffocated. It is time to consider declaring the area a disaster area. It would be the only way to alleviate the damage that we are still evaluating. “We have to bear in mind that irrigation with reclaimed water – an emergency measure put in place a few weeks ago – will not arrive until next May or June. And that will only be a respite for a part of the 14,000 hectares of subtropical crops that we have sown”. ENERGY CRISIS
‘It’s a joke’- Spain & France slam EU gas price cap: The Spanish government on Wednesday lambasted the European Commission’s proposed price cap on wholesale natural gas, set so high that critics have questioned if it would ever be used. Spanish ecological transition minister Teresa Ribera called the commission’s proposal a “joke”, saying it would cause steeper price hikes and hamper efforts to tame decades-high inflation. – The French energy transition ministry criticised an “insufficient” scheme that “does not respond to the reality of the market”. “The commission must propose an operational text, not simply a text that is political grandstanding and may have negative or no effects,” it said. MRI reveals never-seen-before spaces in brains of migraine sufferers: – “To our knowledge, this is first study using ultra-high-resolution MRI to study microvascular changes in the brain due to migraine, particularly in perivascular spaces,” said study co-author Wilson Xu, from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. “Because 7T MRI is able to create images of the brain with much higher resolution and better quality than other MRI types, it can be used to demonstrate much smaller changes that happen in brain tissue after a migraine.” Among these changes were cerebral microbleeds, along with enlarged perivascular spaces in the centrum semiovale region of the brain, in the migraine sufferers. Football- European Parliament declares, FIFA “has seriously damaged the image and integrity of world football”: – The European Parliament warned this Thursday that the FIFA “has seriously damaged the image and integrity of world football” and considered that the corruption within this entity, at the center of the controversy for granting Qatar the celebration of the World Cup of football in 2022, is “rampant, systemic and deeply entrenched”. – The resolution on the situation of the human rights in Qatar in the context of the tournament, approved this Thursday by show of hands, begins by lamenting “the death of thousands of migrant workers and the injuries suffered by workers during the preparations” for the World Cup and calls for “accountability” for them. CULTURE
The Barbizon Hotel- A sanctuary for women in midtown Manhattan: – “What girl wouldn’t love this marvelous location to work and study for her future? Ambitious, discriminating young women have for years preferred the Barbizon,” read an advertisement in the April 1966 issue of The New Yorker that also listed the countless amenities (shops, beauty parlor, restaurants, a swimming pool and more) of a place that, from its construction in 1927 until its transformation into a luxury apartment building in 2007, helped to liberate the women of New York – and the world. In the city where trends are born, the Barbizon Hotel officially opened its doors in 1928; an exclusively female residence that, for decades, served as a refuge for some of the most fascinating women in the city and, by extension, the planet. Liza Minnelli, Grace Kelly and Joan Didion were some of the young women who chose it as their base of operations at the beginning of their careers. Others, such as Margaret Brown, the “unsinkable” survivor of the Titanic, ended up there in their last years. However, it was another illustrious guest who inspired historian Paulina Bren to write The Barbizon: The Hotel That Set Women Free, the most exhaustive chronicle of this legendary beacon of sorority. – “Reading Sylvia Plath’s novel, The Bell Jar, which is a fictionalized (barely!) account of her time in New York at the Barbizon in 1953, I was struck by the scene when the protagonist throws her entire wardrobe off the roof of the hotel. The hotel was located at the corner of Lexington Avenue and 63rd Street and built in a style that architecture magazines defined as a “Romanesque sort of Gothic.” Full article: https://english.elpais.com/culture/2022-11-24/the-barbizon-hotel-a-sanctuary-for-women-in-midtown-manhattan.html

Have your computer properly maintained with an annual professional servicing to keep it clean, running cool and thus extend its life. ANDALUCIA
Andalusia’s new climate change plan will condition all of the Junta’s laws: {Translation} – The Andalusian government remains committed to going green. This was certified by the Executive on Tuesday when it began drafting the second Andalusian Climate Action Plan for 2023-2026. According to the Minister of Sustainability, Environment and Blue Economy, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, who is also spokesman for Juanma Moreno’s government, this initiative is “stepping on the accelerator” in the fight against climate change. – The Andalusian government’s green commitment also includes a new line of aid for municipalities in the region with between 50 and 100,000 inhabitants. For them, Juanma Moreno’s government has set aside one million euros in the new Andalusian budget, with the idea that these localities will be the scene of “innovative projects against climate change”. – Regarding the new climate plan, Fernández-Pacheco pointed out that “nobody disputes” that Andalusia must tackle policies against climate change. Furthermore, the spokesman recalled how the region is a “particularly vulnerable” place in the face of the impacts of global warming. At the same time, “Andalusia is a pioneer and leader” in the fight against this reality, he boasted. “We are paving the way for many regions of our country to follow this path that the international community is inexorably marking out for us,” added Fernández-Pacheco. – In line with this fight against climate change comes the second Andalusian Climate Action Plan (PAAC). The Andalusian government spokesman pointed out that it is a “transversal” plan that will permeate all the Junta’s policies in the future. The aim, according to Moreno’s government, is to make the fight against global warming an issue to be taken into account in all Andalusian legislation. ***Communication and awareness-raising*** – The plan, Férnandez-Pacheco advanced, has three fundamental lines: mitigation of emissions; adaptation of Andalusia to climate change; and communication and participation to raise public awareness. In addition, the plan contemplates the development of actions for each of the programmes in its time horizon. In this way, the actions are defined through specific programme sheets with information on, among others, the target population, the body responsible and the agents involved, with the identification of monitoring indicators, or the budget and source of funds. – The results of the first operational programme of the Junta de Andalucía’s climate action for the period 2021-2022 have recently been presented, with a total of 119 actions compiled, and a committed investment of 1,783 million euros for the period, according to the spokesperson for the regional minister. – The Andalusian spokesman insisted that the central government should support Andalusia as the venue for a climate summit. In fact, Juanma Moreno’s government has shown that it is open to negotiating the dates if Pedro Sánchez is not convinced by 2025. The intention, Fernández-Pacheco stressed, is to hold a summit “in a positive way” and without any desire to confront the central government. Photo:ABC. The DGT begins a campaign of surveillance and control of vans on roads of Andalusia: {Translation} – From today until Sunday 27 November, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) will carry out a campaign to monitor vans on the roads of Andalusia, where they will check that they comply with the regulations, especially in aspects such as age, MOT, insurance, load, speed and driver documentation. – During the last campaign carried out in Andalusia, the agents of the Guardia Civil Traffic Group checked 13,440 of these vehicles on the roads, of which 1,002, 7.46%, were reported for not complying with some of the precepts of the regulations. – The main reason for the complaints, 20.38%, was not having a valid MOT, bearing in mind that the average age of vans under 25 years old in Spain is over 12 years. Speeding, lack of insurance or failure to pass the MOT were other common offences. – The campaign also includes the van driver’s compliance with the rules, as in the last control period they were mainly reported for not having the proper documentation, not wearing seat belts and testing positive for alcohol or drugs. Specifically, 13.5% of the complaints were for speeding, which amounted to 149 complaints; 8.79% were for not having the proper documentation for both the loader and the transporter, in accordance with the L.O.T.T.; and 4.7%, for not having the driver’s documentation in force, 52 drivers were reported. In addition, the Guardia de la Guardia’s Traffic Group detected 8 van drivers driving after having consumed alcohol or drugs. – The loading of vehicles was another of the precepts to be checked, as the weight and distribution of the load is vital in the event of an accident. In the six days of surveillance, 66 drivers were reported for exceeding the permitted weight of their vehicle and another 32 for incorrect load distribution. It should be remembered that the greater the mass of the van, the greater the safety distance that must be maintained in order to stop the vehicle in time for any unforeseen event. AXARQUIA
Axarquía village to host Ukranian refugees in former care home: – A former care home for elderly people in the Axarquía village of Almáchar is to be used to receive refugees fleeing from the war in Ukraine. – The building, which was built over more than a decade ago, has been closed and unused for more than five years. At the end of 2019 it was thought that 22 people would move in to the home, but this has not happened. As such, the town hall has decided, following requests from the provincial and regional governments (the Diputación in Malaga and the Junta de Andalucía), to cede the building to the Red Cross for the temporary reception of refugees from the war in Ukraine. EUROPE
Brussels proposes a 275 euro price cap on gas purchases: {Translation} – The European Commission proposed on Tuesday to set a cap of 275 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) on the price of gas purchases that will be automatically triggered by exceptional price rises and will limit transactions on the regulated market for one month, although the mechanism will have an emergency brake to suspend it if it seriously disrupts the markets. – This market correction mechanism will set the cap one month in advance for products on the Dutch futures market TTF, which is used as a benchmark for gas prices across the EU. – The cap will be triggered if the Dutch price base reaches this maximum price and only if the price increase is not matched by a similar increase on the world market, which must also be 58 euros or more above the global average for two weeks, European Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson confirmed at a press conference on Tuesday. However, the measure does not include over-the-counter (OTC) markets. – Brussels’ aim is to “achieve an immediate effect” on the market, although the mechanism carries the implicit possibility of being suspended if it causes “serious disturbances”. – In addition, the price cap will be automatically deactivated if a monthly review shows that the conditions for its application are no longer met. Football News- Ronaldo to leave Manchester United after criticism of club: – Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo will leave with immediate effect, the Premier League team said on Tuesday, marking a bitter end to the Portugal captain’s second spell at Old Trafford after he said he felt betrayed by the club. – An explosive interview with TalkTV this month – in which Ronaldo said he did not respect manager Erik ten Hag – had put him on shaky ground at the club he rejoined in August 2021 after winning eight major trophies with them from 2003-2009. – United said last week they would address Ronaldo’s comments only after establishing the complete facts and added last Friday that they had initiated “appropriate steps” in response. Football News- Why are World Cup games so long as average match sees 16 minutes of added time?: – During the first four matches – Qatar v Ecuador, England v Iran, Senegal v the Netherlands and USA v Wales – there has been an incredible 64 minutes of added time. That’s an average of 16 minutes per game or eight minutes per half. – The change in tactic from FIFA for this World Cup has been made in a bid to stop time-wasting and to increase the amount of actual game time where the ball is in play. It means that each and every World Cup game is likely to have more stoppage time at the end of both halves than what we have seen in previous tournaments and compared to what we have become accustomed to in the Premier League and the Champions League. – Pierluigi Collina, chairman of the FIFA referees committee, explained the reasoning behind the new directive. “We want to avoid matches at 42, 43, 44 minutes from effective time. So the times of substitutions, penalties, celebrations, medical treatment or of course VAR will have to be compensated.” Full article: https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup-games-lasting-long-25575110

Ministry of Economy suffers another cyber attack that affects “very sensitive data”: {Translation, summary} 21Nov22, 11:07 CET – ‘ABC.ES’ has revealed this hack, which has infected this Ministry, as well as other public agencies, and the Police are investigating “in secret.” – The Ministry of Economy has been the victim of a cyber-attack in which hackers have accessed “very sensitive data” through the computer of one of its civil servants. The news has been brought forward by ABC, reporting that the incident became known last Monday 14 November and was reported by the attacked civil servant himself, who realised that someone had remotely accessed his computer without his consent when, after a few minutes of inactivity, he returned to his workstation and saw how the mouse was moving “on its own”. – Technicians from the ministry’s IT department, the User Service Centre (CAU), “checked the computer for infection and removed the software installed to take control of the computer”, the newspaper reports, noting that the cyberattack “took place on the SARA network that connects the different public administrations, so it may have spread to other public bodies”. – ABC specifies that the hacking affected the Analysis department of the ministry headed by Nadia Calviño, which prepares all the economic forecasts and contains “all imaginable macroeconomic and microeconomic data; production in all sectors, employment data including working and financial records, foreign balances, debt and confidential information on large companies”. According to the information, the National Police are carrying out an investigation under “strict secrecy”, which is in an “embryonic state” and whose “actions are secret”. – It has not been ruled out that the cyber-attack is related to the one suffered by the Judicial Neutral Point of the General Council of the Judiciary last October, “when intruders stole entire databases of the services of the Tax Agency, Social Security and Foreigners’ Affairs”. – As for who might be behind these offensives, ABC points out, based on sources consulted, that given their magnitude, they are more likely to have been perpetrated by “a strong criminal organisation or by a state than by a private individual”. – According to José Manuel Garabito, a cybersecurity expert, the perpetrators are people with “very specific knowledge and who are part of the world of cybercrime”. He also points out that the stolen data could be offered for sale on the Deep Web and used, for example, to commit scams. “If you have someone’s income tax return, where they work, where they live, email, telephone and account numbers, you can target them with very specific attacks,” the expert explains. These are the pets that the new Animal Welfare Law prohibits having at home: {Translation} 12/11/2022, 08:03 – The classic idea of having a dog or cat as a pet, or at most an aquarium with colourful fish, has been superseded for years by a wide range of possibilities that have turned the most varied and unsuspected species into ‘flatmates’. – Eccentricities aside, the new Animal Welfare Law that came into force last summer has put a limit on animals that can be considered ‘companion animals’, leaving out options to which society has become accustomed over time. – The reasons are clear. On the one hand, to preserve people’s health, which could be compromised by living with certain animals. One might think in the first instance of the transmission of diseases or poison, but the possibility of attacks due to outbreaks of aggression or mere behaviour should not be overlooked. – On the other hand, to avoid a threat to the ecosystem in case the animal escapes from the home. Obviously, this group mainly includes non-native species or those that may be invasive or colonising in certain contexts. – The new law also excludes species that are not easy to care for. Not only in terms of feeding, but also in terms of not being able to guarantee the natural behaviour they would have in their original habitat. ***Cases not allowed*** – In this way, the Directorate General for Animal Rights (an agency of the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030) has elaborated on the list of species disallowed in the new Welfare Act. – This includes rabbits, but also rodents such as hamsters, guinea pigs, mice and chinchillas. Hedgehogs, which are considered potentially dangerous to other native animals, are also not allowed. – Under the new rules, it will no longer be possible to emulate George Clooney and keep a Vietnamese pig as a pet. If abandoned, as they are not easy to look after, they could cause overpopulation if mixed with wild boar. – Spiders are another species that is banned because of health concerns for humans. – The presence of reptiles in the domestic environment has also now been revised: it is not possible to keep turtles in the home (due to the vulnerability -sometimes danger of extinction- of some species and their strength when searching for food, in the event of a clash with native species), nor chameleons, iguanas, snakes, lizards or geckos. – Finally, non-native birds, such as parrots, lovebirds and even parakeets, are excluded from the list of permitted pets. UK
Deal on UK licences in Spain agreed but still no exchange date: – The UK Ambassador to Spain has confirmed that “two outstanding issues” delaying negotiations have now been resolved, although he didn’t confirm how many “weeks” it will be before in-limbo UK licence holders can exchange and get back on the road. – The British Embassy has never explicitly explained the reasons why negotiations have gone on for over two years without much progress, with the only hint being that Spain asked for the provision of UK licence holders’ data to be part of the deal, something the UK did not want to agree to. Some Spanish laws have to receive approval from the Spanish Parliament and the Senate before they can come into force, extra legislative steps that can add months to the process. – However, all the British drivers residing in Spain – as well as Spaniards and other foreign nationals who have a UK licence – at least now have the peace of mind of knowing that they won’t have to sit their driving exam again in Spain. – “At that point (when the law comes into force) you will then have six months to exchange your UK licence for a Spanish one and during that time you will be able to drive using your existing valid UK licence.” “Now I know this has not been an easy time for those of you who have been unable to drive,” the ambassador acknowledged once more about the mobility issues affected drivers have faced for months, especially those in rural areas. In Italy the Police Control The Internet- Police Tracked Traffic of All National ISPs to Catch Pirate IPTV Users: – If your internet service or IPTV provider is based in Italy, your internet activity is being monitored by a police tracking system. – Today’s general consensus is that hitting site operators is much more effective but whenever the opportunity appears, undermining user confidence should be part of the strategy. Italian police have been following the same model by shutting down pirate IPTV services and warning users they’re up next. – Police also claimed that a tracking system made it possible to identify the users of the pirate streams. The letters to offenders suggest extraordinary and potentially unprecedented tactics. – The letters state that Italian authorities were able to track the IPTV users by “arranging for the redirection of all Internet service providers’ national connections” so that subscribers placed their orders on a police-controlled server configured to record their activity. (This is very disturbing. If Italy is only now admitting to tracking internet traffic en masse, what other countries are doing the same? And how is this possible when the EU has strict rules designed precisely to prevent this type of user tracking by private or public agencies? Police are only supposed to be able to get warrants to investigate specific IP addresses, not monitor everyone! Google & Fakebook have paid billions in fines for similar behavior. -Ed.) Digital product passports become the norm in EU’s green economy plan: The EU is currently reviewing its circular economy rules (that will replace our current supply-chain economy as per the UN’s Agenda 2030), with the intention of making green products the norm in the bloc’s single market. A central part of this agenda rests on the introduction of so-called ‘digital product passports’ that will track the origin of all materials and components used in the manufacturing process of everyday consumer goods. Products would have an ID number, similar to passports, and they should be machine-readable, either via QR codes, or bar codes.
