-22nd – Day trip to Cadiz with Guide €35pp. Cádiz, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe , with archaeological remains dating to the 12th century BC, was founded by the Phoenicians. It has been a principal home port of the Spanish Navy since the accession of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century. It is also the site of the University of Cádiz.
Situated on a narrow slice of land surrounded by the sea‚ Cádiz is, in most respects, a typically Andalusian city with well-preserved historical landmarks. The older part of Cádiz, within the remnants of the city walls, is commonly referred to as the Old Town (Spanish: Casco Antiguo). It is characterized by the antiquity of its various quarters (barrios), among them El Pópulo, La Viña , and Santa María, which present a marked contrast to the newer areas of town. While the Old City’s street plan consists of narrow winding alleys connecting large plazas, newer areas of Cádiz typically have wide avenues and more modern buildings. In addition, the city is dotted with numerous parks where exotic plants flourish, including giant trees allegedly brought to Spain by Columbus from the New World .
-29th – Trip to the Biopark in Fuengirola €30pp TBC includes entry to the park.

30 cases of monkeypox confirmed in Madrid and another 40 under study: {Translation} 22May22 18:36
-The Community of Madrid has 30 confirmed cases of monkeypox and another 40 are still being studied as suspects, according to data provided on Sunday by the regional health minister, Enrique Ruiz Escudero, who reiterated that work is being done to try to locate the chain of transmission. In Spain, at least six autonomous communities have registered possible cases of smallpox.
-The 30 cases confirmed in Madrid have been confirmed through PCR tests, while the remaining 40 are awaiting sequencing. All those affected are males who are progressing favourably and are in isolation. The infections, according to initial data, occurred through two chains of transmission, one of them related to a sauna in the capital, which has now been closed.
-Most of them would be related to sexual relations between men. “The main thing now is to locate the traceability of all cases and from there to achieve isolation and try to stop the transmission of the virus. We must continue and wait for these tests to arrive as soon as possible and try to confirm who is infected and establish the necessary isolation mechanisms in these cases,” said Ruiz Escudero.
-The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed more than 80 cases and announced a working protocol with the affected countries, more than a dozen according to its estimates, to improve “their understanding of the extent and causes of the disease”. The WHO is also aware of another 50 or so cases pending confirmation of a virus it describes as “endemic in animal populations in several countries”. Source, Spanish: https://www.canarias7.es/

MALAGA

Skyrocketing Rents A Threat to Young Workers and Healthy Development of Communities: {Translation, summary}
-A youth unemployment rate of 33%, low wages and the high price of flats prevent youth emancipation. Record breaking numbers of evictions and squatted properties plague the region at a time when landlords are raising rents to try and cover losses incurred due to Covid caused high vacancy rates the past 2 years.
-It has never been easy for young people (between 18 and 25 years of age) to leave their parents’ house and start their lives independently, but now it is practically impossible, thus hindering their development in life. The youth unemployment rate in Malaga is skyrocketing, those who do get a job tend to have low wages or precarious conditions and the price of housing, both for buying and renting, is skyrocketing. It is an explosive mixture that prevents today’s youth, the most educated in history, from being able to grow from a personal point of view. And that, subsequently, leads to later relationships, lower birth rates, frustrations, in short, problems.
-The latest Emancipation Observatory published by the Spanish Youth Council, with data from the first half of 2021, is devastating. “We have the sad honor of registering the lowest emancipation rate of this century,” reads the document, which exposes the current situation of young people without mincing words. Only 15% of young people have managed to become independent, being the lowest figure since 1998.
-Buying a house and taking out a mortgage is unfeasible, for most young people it never even crosses their minds. But the option of renting is also very complicated and in order to get it, one has to resign oneself to sharing a flat between several people, as if one were an eternal student. “A young person who wants to emancipate themselves on their own would spend, on average, 81.9% of their salary on rent or would have to adjust to a maximum tolerable surface area of 29.3 square metres”, regrets the report by the Spanish Youth Council. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/
(Depending on how the Andalucian elections turn out, this situation could lead to rent controls. If these trends continue, and landlords refuse to moderate rents to be in line with local economies, then the gov’t will eventually step in to do the moderating, as we see in Catalonia right now. -Ed.)

EUROPE

The UN condemns the “stigmatization of LGTBI and Africans” in “stereotyped” information about monkeypox: {Translation}
-The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) on Sunday condemned “stereotypical” reports and comments about the spread of monkeypox that have contributed to reinforcing homophobic and racist stigma against the LGTBI community and citizens of African countries.
-UNAIDS said in a statement released Sunday that “a significant proportion of cases have been identified among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men, with some cases identified through sexual health clinics.
-However, the UN programme recalls that “the World Health Organization (WHO) notes that available evidence suggests that those most at risk are those who have had close physical contact with someone with monkeypox, and that risk is not limited to men who have sex with men”. “Lessons from the AIDS response show that stigma and blame directed at certain groups of people can quickly undermine the response to the outbreak,” the programme laments in the statement. Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/

Meet the ‘Hermettes’: A Secret Society of Women Who Prefer to Be Left Alone: “Hermette” derives from hermit, those who live in solitude or in a small social circle. The society holds many misunderstandings toward hermits. People see them as self-centered, anti-social, hostile, cynical, fearful of people, and uncooperative.
-It never was common to live as a hermit, and in the Western world, hermits are still rare. It’s even harder for women to choose this lifestyle. The masculine hermit has existed across cultures for many years, but the feminine of a hermit – what I call a hermette – is a lifestyle that I believe should become a new feminine ideal. MOONETTE – Organic Skincare for Mature Skin

We are a Torrox-based company specialising in the creation of formulae which help prevent premature skin ageing. We are committed to making effective products at affordable prices.
Your skin health matters to us. How you feed your skin is as important as how you feed your body. Why settle for anything less than natural and organic?
As our skin is the first layer of our defence against microbial infections, ultraviolet radiation and environmental contamination it plays a vital role in our health. As we grow older, however, our skin becomes thinner, wrinkled, and more sensitive; hence it requires the use of treatments containing specific ingredients to the care of treating mature skin.
Recognising this need we have created a range of formulae which help
-slow down ageing process by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
-improve facial complexion and eliminate blemishes.
At Moonette, we are passionate about health, beauty and plants. Your skin will benefit from the properties of botanic essential oils combined with a selection of nutrients for deep hydration, cell revitalization and antioxidant effect, all sourced from the finest natural ingredients with gorgeous fragrances.
Naturally, we care about our planet and feel the need to help reduce the sheer volumes of plastics waste that are generated daily around the globe. Presently, we are minimizing the usage of plastic materials in our production while seeking alternative forms of packaging. To help reduce pollution we are asking all local customers to recycle or reuse their Moonette skincare containers, and offering a small discount on future purchases to customers recycling containers.

-Likewise, 41 deaths have been recorded in the community in three days, eight less than those recorded last Tuesday, when the highest figure for the month of May was recorded (49 deaths).
-Regarding the current average incidence of infection in Andalusia in the last 14 days in people over 60 years, this stands at 603.34 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which is 2.76 points less than three days ago.
-By provinces, Seville is the most positive with 1,999, followed by Malaga with 1,177 in Malaga, Cadiz with 1,575, Granada with 826, Cordoba with 756, Jaen with 688, Almeria with 586 and Huelva with 466.

COSTA DEL SOL

Magnitude 5 earthquake in the Alboran Sea is widely felt across south of Spain: The epicentre of a magnitude 5 earthquake was registered in the Alboran Sea this Friday, 20 May, but it was strongly felt in different parts of Malaga city and along the Costa del Sol. It was recorded at 2.35pm (local time) according to data from Spain’s National Geological Institute (IGN). Welcome to the Survellience State- Almargen installs number plate cameras to “improve safety”: A total of 18 surveillance cameras have been installed at strategic locations. The town hall says they will alert the police to possible crimes and also improve road safety.
-The cameras have been active since April and will serve to detect and record the number plates of all the vehicles that enter and leave Almargen.
-The registration plates are automatically filed in a database at a new office located in headquarters of the Local Police. The images captured by the cameras are stored in a computer and, in compliance with the current data protection law, are automatically deleted after a few months.
-The council stressed that the police are the “only authorised personnel” to have access to view and process these recordings, which, they say, “will undoubtedly create a precedent that will soon be seen it in more locations”. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/
Note: This type of data is saved from the camera network to the “cloud” for storage. Some cameras use wifi to deliver data for remote collection. Wifi is easily snooped on. Despite the best efforts of the police, they are vulnerable to the all too common cloud hacks and data breaches, like the rest of us. Every month another major cloud hack gets announced. The cloud is not secure, and either is this data they are collecting. -Ed.

British Airways continues to cancel flights from UK airports: British Airways continued to cancel flights on Thursday, May 19 from UK airports, weeks after it first experienced IT problems and staff shortages. 130 short and medium haul flights were cancelled from London Heathrow, with more expected in the coming days, in what the airline says include planned cancellations. 108 long-haul flights were also cancelled, with departures removed from the schedules weeks ago.
-Drivers expecting avalanche of fines as new UK driving rule changes implemented: In the past only the police were able to penalise drivers for misdemeanours on the road, however the new changes will see that responsibility pass to Councils. That’s not good news for drivers, with Councils typically having more enforcement offices on the road as well as the use of CCTV.
The new laws, which come into effect on May 31, will allow Councils to fine drivers up to £70 for offences such as making illegal turns, stopping in yellow boxes at junctions and driving through no entry signs. Full article: https://euroweeklynews.com/

EUROPE

Finland Loses Main Gas Supply After Refusing Payment in Rubles: Finland is becoming the third European country to be cut off from Russian natural gas after refusing to pay for the fuel in rubles.
-Flows on a main pipeline from the region’s top supplier are set to stop in the early hours of Saturday, according to a filing by Finnish importer Gasum Oy. Poland and Bulgaria had their taps turned off last month for the same reason.
-The lost supplies will likely have a limited impact on the Nordic nation’s economy, with the fuel accounting for just about 5% of the energy mix. It’s mainly used by factories rather than for heating like in many other European nations. Full article: https://energynow.ca/

Suspected case of monkeypox virus investigated on the Costa del Sol: The first possible case of monkeypox virus on the Costa del Sol is currently being investigated, in a foreign resident who has recently been travelling in several countries. He is self-isolating at home, waiting for confirmation of whether or not he has the illness.
The incubation period for monkeypox virus is from six to 13 days, although on occasions it can be up to three weeks. In Spain there are seven confirmed cases at present, all in Madrid, and another 29 suspected cases. The illness has also been detected in London and Lisbon. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/

WHO calls emergency meeting as monkeypox cases grow to 100 in Europe: The World Health Organization was due to hold an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss the recent outbreak of monkeypox, a viral infection more common to west and central Africa, after more than 100 cases were confirmed or suspected in Europe.
-In what Germany described as the largest outbreak in Europe ever, cases have been reported in at least eight European countries – Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom – as well as the United States, Canada and Australia.
-First identified in monkeys, the disease typically spreads through close contact and has rarely spread outside Africa, so this series of cases has triggered concern.
-However, scientists do not expect the outbreak to evolve into a pandemic like COVID-19, given the virus does not spread as easily as SARS-COV-2. Monkeypox is usually a mild viral illness, characterised by symptoms of fever as well as a distinctive bumpy rash. Seven out of ten foods became more expensive by more than 5% in April: Prices rose 8.3% in April, according to CPI data, and the shopping basket is the most affected: 73% of these consumer goods became more expensive by more than 5% in April compared to the same month of 2021, according to data from a NielsenIQ report.
-What rises the most in price is oil, which costs 75% more than a year ago. Thus, a liter of oil had an average price in April 2021 of 2.34 euros, while now the average is 4.11 euros. This rise in its cost has reduced demand, with a 32% drop in the volume of oil sold in April.
-Margarine is the second product that has become more expensive, specifically 35% compared to a year ago, and whose demand has fallen two points. It is followed by pasta, 31% more expensive, which is associated with a 10% decrease in purchase volume. A year ago the price of a kilo of pasta was 1.72 euros while now it reaches 2.24 euros, reveals Nielsen.
-Pastries become 25% more expensive, baby food and butter 20%, as well as household cellulose (toilet paper, kitchen paper), 17% more expensive. Full article: https://spainsnews.com/

The calima returns to Andalucía with the worst expected at the weekend: The dreaded calima haze, with Saharan sand dust in suspension, is returning to the south of Spain. But this time it will be accompanied by high temperatures instead of precipitation that fell as muddy rain in spring which left terraces and facades dyed red. The haze was already noticeable on Wednesday, 18 May, and it will increase in the coming days, especially in Andalucía and the south of Murcia, with the highest concentration of dust in suspension expected at the weekend. The new calima will clearly affect the air quality but it is not expected to be as strong as that of last March. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/

New Bluetooth Hack Could Let Attackers Remotely Unlock Smart Locks and Cars: A novel Bluetooth relay attack can let cybercriminals more easily than ever remotely unlock and operate cars, break open residential smart locks, and breach secure areas. The vulnerability has to do with weaknesses in the current implementation of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), a wireless technology used for authenticating Bluetooth devices that are physically located within a close range.
After being alerted to the findings on April 4, 2022, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) acknowledged that relay attacks are a known risk and that the standard body is currently working on “more accurate ranging mechanisms.” Full article: https://thehackernews.com/

For Gospel Music Fans: In the summer of 2011, two American iconic musicians met and jammed up a storm. Very few people heard what they created until now.
The 12-track live album “Carry Me Home” is the long-awaited record of what happened when Grammy-winning soul and gospel star Mavis Staples visited her good friend Levon Helm, the Grammy-winning drummer and singer of The Band. It would be one of Helm’s final recordings before his death, the next year.
There are the gospel classics like “Hand Writing on the Wall” and “Farther Along,” protest songs like “This Is My Country,” an electric “You Got to Move,” Buddy Miller’s “Wide River to Cross” and “When I Go Away,” a Helm’s favorite. Staples’ sister Yvonne sang and so did Helm’s daughter, Amy. Full article: https://apnews.com/  & VIDEO LINK

Japan OKs plan to release Fukushima nuclear plant wastewater:
-Japan’s nuclear regulator on Wednesday approved plans by the operator of the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant to release its treated radioactive wastewater into the sea next year, saying the outlined methods are safe and risks to the environment minimal.
-The plan was submitted by the Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings in December based on the government’s decision last year to release the wastewater as a necessary step for the ongoing plant cleanup and decommission.
-A massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011 destroyed the Fukushima plant’s cooling systems, causing the meltdown of three reactors and the release of large amounts of radiation. Water that has been used to cool the three damaged reactor cores, which remain highly radioactive, has since leaked but was collected and stored in tanks.
-There is still concern in the community and neighboring countries about the potential health hazards of the release of the wastewater that includes tritium — a byproduct of nuclear power production and a possible carcinogen at high levels.
-The government and TEPCO say more than 60 isotopes selected for treatment can be lowered to meet safety standards, except for tritium, but that it is safe if diluted. Scientists say impact of long term low-dose exposure to the environment and humans are unknown, and that tritium can have a bigger impact on humans when consumed in fish than in water. Russia expels 27 Spanish diplomats in tit-for-tat move: Twenty-seven Spanish diplomats must leave Russia within a week, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday. Spain said in April it would expel some 25 Russian diplomats and embassy staff from Madrid, joining other European Union countries that have ordered Russian officials to leave. Ministry of Health issues warning about Monkeypox virus in Spain after eight suspected cases detected: The initial symptoms are similar to chickenpox, but milder. They include fever, headache, muscle pain, back pain, swollen lymph glands, shivering and exhaustion. There may be a rash, which usually starts on the face and then extends to other parts of the body.
-Spain’s Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, has warned the regional governments to be on the alert for possible cases of monkeypox virus after eight suspected cases were detected in Madrid. The National Microbiology Centre is analysing samples to confirm whether or not they do have this illness, as cases have been recorded in several countries in recent days.
-The alarm was raised by the UK two days ago, where seven cases were reported. All of them were men who had had sexual relations with other men, although there was no epidemiological link between them, which points to the existence of different chains of infection. Meanwhile, Portugal has confirmed three cases via PCR testing, has two other suspected cases and 15 others under investigation. ANDALUCIA

More hours of Mathematics and Language for Andalusian students: {Translation, summary}
-Primary students from first to third grade will dedicate five hours a week to Language and Mathematics in Andalusian schools. In secondary schools they will study four hours a week of Language, Mathematics and English. This has been determined by the Regional Ministry of Education for the drafting of the curriculum for Primary and Compulsory Secondary Education. The document is in the preliminary phase and has already been sent to trade unions and employers’ organizations.
-For Andalusian students, these changes will be translated into the timetable as follows: From first to third grade, five hours per week will be dedicated to Mathematics and Language. In the fourth year, one more hour will be dedicated to science. In Secondary School, four hours per week will be devoted to Mathematics, Language and English. In total, this means that in Andalusia students will receive 500 more hours of Language and 617 more hours of Mathematics than the Lomloe minimum between Primary and ESO (Educación Secundaria Obligatoria) throughout their schooling.
-In addition, in Primary, the centers will be able to organize the timetable distribution by cycles instead of course by course to better adapt it to the configuration of their own resources.
-In ESO, schools will have two hours for optional subjects offered by the Regional Ministry, such as robotics, public speaking, second foreign language or music.
-Likewise, the Andalusian project gives continuity to the promotion of computational thinking and robotics in the curriculum, but also to the Humanities, because the commitment to Classical Culture is maintained and the optional offer of Philosophy in ESO will be reinforced.
-Likewise, with respect to the second foreign language, it becomes compulsory in the first year of ESO, in order to give continuity to the existing obligation in the fifth and sixth years of primary school, and ceases to be compulsory in the first year of Baccalaureate.
-The document reflects Andalusia’s position of “implementing the culture of effort” in the educational system (sounds like “participation trophies” to me!). With regard to class advancement, the draft regulation establishes that the teaching teams will make the promotion decision requiring that it be made in a collegiate manner by a two-thirds majority. They will take into account that, after the application of educational reinforcement measures and necessary support during the course aimed at ensuring the acquisition of essential skills, if the student has actively participated with involvement, attention and effort.

USA

US Congress holds hearing on UFOs- ‘Reports of sightings are frequent and continuing’: Scott Bray, Deputy Director of Naval Intelligence, told committee members that since the early 2000s there has been a significant increase in reports of unidentified or unauthorized aircraft and objects in military areas.
-In 2021, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence published a long-awaited report admitting that the main military and espionage agencies lacked the elements to explain 142 sightings made between 2004 and March of last year. “The limited amount of high-quality reporting on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) hampers our ability to draw firm conclusions about the nature or intent of UAP,” said the document. HEALTH

Spain’s new women’s health law: Here are the key points.
-Girls aged 16 and 17 will be able to get abortions without the need for permission.
-Guaranteed abortions in the public health system, and close to home.
-Registration of objectors. Any health professional either working in the private or public sectors can decline to participate, and declare themselves to be a conscientious objector.
-The three mandatory reflection days will be eliminated.
-Menstrual and pregnancy leave. The law will include a specific section on periods, allowing time off work for women who suffer from extremely painful and disabling periods, which will be financed 100 percent by the State.
-Free period products. In high schools, prisons, women’s centres, civic centres, social centres and public bodies, products such as tampons, pads or menstrual cups will be distributed free of charge with the aim of ending menstrual poverty.
-Free distribution of the pill and methods of male contraception. The new law also indicates that there will be free distribution of the morning-after pill in health centres, as well as in sexual and reproductive health institutions.
-Mandatory sex education. The law states that sex education must be mandatory in schools. Teachers will be trained in sexual and menstrual education, as will prison officers and public workers. Free contraceptive methods will also be distributed in educational centres linked to campaigns on sexual education (something that will also be done in social centres and prisons).
-Surrogacy and forced sterilisation. The law recognises surrogacy as a form of violence against women and the advertising of agencies that offer these services abroad is prohibited. It also considers forced abortion and sterilisation of women with disabilities as violence against women. Full article: https://www.thelocal.es/20220518/key-points-spains-new-womens-health-law/

Spanish cabinet approves paid ‘menstrual leave’: Spain’s cabinet on Tuesday approved a bill which grants paid medical leave for women who suffer from severe period pain, in what would be a first in Europe if it passes the final vote in Parliament.
-The bill entitles workers experiencing period pain to as much time off as they need, with the state social security system – not employers – picking up the tab for the sick leave.
-As with paid leave for other health reasons, a doctor must approve the temporary medical incapacity.
-The proposed legislation must still be approved by parliament, with a vote not expected for months. Full article: https://www.thelocal.es/20220517/spanish-cabinet-approves-paid-menstrual-leave/

Hard Times For Fakebook, Twit-er & WhatsApp Personal Location Tracker!

Spanish hacker exposes privacy flaws on popular messaging service WhatsApp: Chema Alonso, a well-known Spanish hacker and member of the executive committee of Telefónica, has exposed some threats to people’s privacy while they use WhatsApp – the Meta messaging service that is hugely popular in Spain. Alonso said that there is possibly an error that can expose “fundamental data of the people who use the app, such as their location or even the place where they are residing.”
-Testing the potential personal security threat, Chema Alonso said: “To demonstrate this flaw, I myself created a malicious website with a few lines of code and a database log, which I linked in my status as a cheat. “Soon, from my contacts who clicked, I knew if they were in Spain or not, what province they were in, if they used Wi-Fi, the IP of their mobile or the company with which they were connecting to the Internet. “They had completely lost their privacy,” he said, adding that he does not want to tell you more secrets about the fault that has been detected, so as not to give ideas to people who are dedicated to committing fraud in digital form.

Facebook’s devastating decline in users:
-Even Zuckerberg is abandoning floundering Fakebook, to focus on his new META project; he knows Fakebook is doomed to follow My Space into internet oblivion, as advertizers claim FB defrauded them by claiming fake, inflated user numbers to boost ad prices. IF YOU PAY FOR FAKEBOOK ADS, YOU ARE PROBABLY NOT GETTING THE EXPOSURE YOU ARE PAYING FOR!
-Mark Zuckerberg’s terrible year- Facebook’s devastating decline in users caps off turbulent 2021 in which the company was rocked by whistleblower allegations, major service outages, and constant controversy.
-Facebook’s devastating earnings report marked the end of a difficult year for the company, which has been battered by whistleblower allegations, a major global service outage, and protests and controversy over its policies.
-Facebook reported on Wednesday that daily logins to its services dropped nearly 500,000 during the last three months of 2021, the first time in the company’s 18-year history that user activity has declined.
-It sent Facebook shares plunging 26 percent as of February, wiping more than $230 billion off the company’s market cap and erasing at least $29 billion from CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s net worth.
-Zuckerberg blamed the dismal performance on Apple’s privacy changes and increased competition from services such as Tik Tok, but the decline in user activity follows a year of notably bad PR for Facebook.
-Perhaps most significantly, former Facebook employee Frances Haugen leaked thousands of internal documents and embarked on a world tour testifying with damaging allegations against the company.
-Your option? Get your own website. Any business that lacks it’s own website will not be taken as seriously as a company with a nice, informative website of it’s own. It is considered the “business card” of the 21st century. When are you going to catch up? How can you expect potential clients to trust your biz if you can’t manage something as simple as to have your own website?
-DoctorLaptop offers to build 1 page “business card” websites from as little as €100, with no annual hosting fees. A business card website has your basic info and contact details. It will also have your logo, a few photos and maybe a map or other images. However, as these items rarely need to change, the site will not  require regular updating. How often do you re-design your business cards?

Almost half of President Biden’s Twitter followers are FAKE: Inauthentic Twitter accounts, known colloquially as bots, operate to mimic human interaction on the platform in order to achieve a specific goal. Roughly 11 million followers of the US president’s official Twitter handle, @POTUS, are either bots or inactive accounts, according to an analysis by Spark Toro.
That’s 49.3 percent of Biden’s total followers on his White House account. This metric identifies accounts that are unreachable and will not see the account’s tweets either because they’re spam, bots, propaganda, etc. or because they’re no longer active on Twitter. Halting Erosion Using Vetiver Grass from Vetiver Spain:
Vetiver Grass is a fast growing non-invasive clumping grass that grows to 2 metres in height. It has a root system that grows to 3-4 metres deep and they are very strong.
The National Geographic Magazine has called them “Roots of Steel”.
Once Vetiver is established it is drought resistant.
We are located in Sayalonga and we can plant all year round but February and March are the best months to plant Vetiver. Vetiver loves the heat of a long summer to get established.
Decomposing Vetiver used as a mulch, improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away as it is a natural insect repellent. It is in the same family as Lemon Grass, which we also carry.
Vetiver also is a nutritious and replenishable animal feed. Horses, cattle, and pigs love it.
We use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive Ornamental hedge.

Recommendations & Requests

Recommendation for BluCee: We had a flat in El Morche which was rented out using BluCee’s rental department. It was a difficult market place with Covid but they consistently managed to rent it using Spaniards & Northern Europeans when the Brits were unable to travel. We sold the flat because we are moving area and we used BluCee estate agency. Again, the same, drive, enthusiasm and professionalism ensured it sold quickly for full asking price. We cannot recommend Blucee highly enough. (Contact BluCee, tel: 0034 711 042 727. BluCee’s contact info can be seen everyday in the Sponsor’s Section of DigameXtra)

Recommendation for parking near Malaga airport: We have always used SP Parking. Their rates are reasonable, there is a shuttle service to and from the airport, although they are not far from the airport itself. I would highly recommend SP Parking. Tony, Torrox Park, oddjobtony at gmail dot com

SPAIN

Consumers and marketers will pay for the government’s electricity intervention plan, it was previously proposed to be paid by the utilities with record-breaking windfall profits recent crises have generated: {Translation, 1st paragraph only}
-Spain and Portugal have a letter of conformity from the European authorities, which now needs to be confirmed. The main debate is the compensation to companies that produce electricity using this raw material for the real price of gas, which is higher than the cap imposed. According to sources close to the Ministry, those responsible for paying this difference will now be consumers and marketers who go to the regulated tariff, with the option of passing it on to their customers, and also through customers who go directly to buy from the electricity pool.
(So now the consumer energy bailout is turning out to be a loan that consumers will end up paying for in the long run, rather than a plan for utility windfall profits to cover the difference? I wonder how many campaign donations were required to arrange that? -Ed.)

Deposits On Cigarette Butts? Catalonia proposes a 20 cents fee per cigarette to encourage the return of butts: The extraordinary amount would be returned in full upon delivery of the used cigarette butts. It is suggested that the returns of the butts can be made in the same tobacconists where they were purchased or in other points of sale of cigarettes, in addition to recycling points. The Catalan Government, which considers that the measures promoted so far are “not very effective”, proposes including the initiative in the draft of the new national Waste Law, in which single-use plastics are also curbed, unnecessary packaging is eradicated from food and microplastics are removed. Provoking EU, UK sets out new law to fix post-Brexit Northern Ireland trade: Britain set out steps on Tuesday to try to break the deadlock with the European Union on trade with Northern Ireland, lining up a new law that would effectively override parts of a Brexit deal and further inflame ties with Brussels.
In a statement to parliament, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said planned legislation would ease the movement of goods, apply Britain’s tax regime in Northern Ireland and hand London more say over the laws governing the province. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/

SPAIN

Cost of a butane gas bottle reaches its record high in Spain:
-As of tomorrow, Tuesday, May 17, the cost of a bottle will reach its historical high in Spain, at €19.55 each. This is the result of a 4.94 per cent increase. The rise in the bottle is due to the 6.1 per cent increase in the prices of the raw material, and the 9.8 per cent rise in the price of freight. Added to these is the depreciation of the euro against the dollar by 3.6 per cent.
-According to sources from the Ministry of Energy Transition, this maximum price increase has been tempered because it is capped at a maximum of 5 per cent. If this limitation did not exist then the bottle would have increased by 8.19 per cent.

NERJA

Nerja initiates the formalities to build a new car park and a bus station, on a plot located next to the future health centre: {Translation}
-Nerja Town Hall is taking the first formal steps towards the construction of a new car park and bus station. Thus, the Consistory has contracted the drafting of the preliminary project for a car park below ground level, with more than 800 spaces, and a transport interchange on a plot located next to the future health centre, in the surroundings of the Pescia Avenue.
-The preliminary project will define the characteristics of the new building, the maximum number of floors and parking spaces, as well as the accesses to the building. It will also determine the design and programme of the future transport interchange to be built on the roof of the car park.
-This car park will join those of the Balcón de Europa, Verano Azul park and Burriana beach, which will mean that Nerja will have more than 2,000 public parking spaces. Photo:MalagaHoy. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/

ANDALUCIA

Junta de Andalucía is currently drawing up new regulations for holiday rental properties- Malaga proposes new rules:
-Malaga council has taken advantage of the period when suggestions can be made, to ask for sound level monitors in tourist accommodation to be made compulsory. This is just one suggestion from Malaga. Others include a specific document or council certificate to confirm that holiday lets meet the requirements of ventilation, lighting and accessibility, because the council believes the documentation the Junta currently requires is insufficient and obsolete in many cases.
-Malaga also wants everyone who rents a holiday apartment or house to be made aware of the rules regarding noise, rubbish collection, drying facilities for washing, etc. and for the new decree to consider ceiling fans and radiators a suitable way to cool or heat rental properties, to avoid an excessive number of air conditioning units on the exteriors of buildings. Comes the first wave of heat- Andalusia expected to exceed 40 degrees this weekend: {Translation}
-The first heat wave hits Andalusia even before summer arrives, as after a gradual rise in temperatures throughout this week, from Friday the thermometers will be above 40 degrees Celsius in inland areas.
-This has been indicated by the delegate of the State Meteorological Agency, in which he explained that after lower temperatures during this past weekend, in the coming days there will be a progressive rise in thermometric values of up to more than ten degrees.
-He added that from Friday onwards, temperatures will exceed 40 degrees Celsius in the Guadalquivir Valley area, in what will be the first heatwave of the summer. Thus, on 20 May it will reach 41 degrees Celsius in Cordoba and Seville, 40 in the province of Jaén and 39 in Granada.
-One day later, Cordoba and Seville will once again be the hottest provinces with temperatures of up to 43 degrees, while in Jaen it will reach 41 degrees and 40 in Granada, temperatures which will remain high on the following days, especially in Cordoba and Jaen, dropping significantly in Seville.
-On the other hand, these temperatures contrast with those that will be reached in coastal areas, where maximum temperatures will be around 30 degrees, with the highest values in Almeria and Huelva, where they will reach 35 degrees. Source, Spanish:

FINANCIAL

Musk Says 20-25% of All Twitter Accounts Could Be Bots, Suggests Lowering Buyout Offer: Musk told the conference in Miami that he suspects bots – or automated accounts – make up about 20% to 25% of users. Twitter claims it’s less than 5%, but cannot provide proof.
-“So how do advertisers know what they’re getting for their money? This is fundamental to the financial health of Twitter,” Musk wrote.
-Musk has called for tests of random samples of Twitter users to identify bots, and said he has yet to see “any” analysis that shows spam accounts making up less than 5% of the user base.
-Musk said on Sunday “there is some chance it might be over 90% of daily active users.” Independent researchers have estimated that anywhere from 9% to 15% of the millions of Twitter profiles are bots.
-Twitter does not currently require users to register using their real identities and expressly permits automated, parody and pseudonymous profiles on the service. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/markets/deals/twitter-spam-accounts-last-four-quarter-well-under-5-ceo-2022-05-16/

SPAIN

Spanish government caps maximum gas price and pledges ‘everyone will notice the difference in their electricity bills’ – IF the EU approves measure:
-Despite what some local news sources are saying, this is NOT a done deal without EU approval.
-The measure will be in force for one year and will begin in approximately two weeks, following authorisation from Brussels.
Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/

Brussels forces Spain to change the regulated electricity rate as a condition for approving the gas cap: Brussels has forced Spain to reform the semi-regulated electricity rate to decouple it from the hourly price of the wholesale electricity market. As confirmed by government sources, this is a requirement of the European Commission to give the green light to the Iberian cap on gas that has been approved this Friday by Spain and Portugal. The mechanism has already been approved by both governments and now needs the definitive approval of Brussels, which may take up to “two weeks,” according to Vice President Teresa Ribera. It has been explained that as soon as the first phase of the reopening takes place, citizens and residents of the EU as well as nationals of other countries who are authorised to enter the Schengen Area, will be permitted to cross the land borders.
-“It will be a gradual reopening: at midnight between Monday and Tuesday of next week, the steps of El Tarajal, in Ceuta, and Beni Enzar, in Melilla, will be reopened for citizens and residents of the European Union and for those people authorized to circulate in the Schengen Area,” the statement of the Ministry reads.

The renovation of public lighting begins in the urban area of Nerja: {Translation, summary}
The intervention involves the renovation of 1,921 street lights in 81 streets and 13 squares in the town centre. In addition, work is being carried out on the old N-340 road, the accesses to the municipality from the motorway, the banks of the river Chillar, the El Playazo lane and the Camino de Burriana.
The type of LED lamp being installed has a longer lifespan than the current one, reduces the carbon footprint, is fully recyclable and allows for dimming. The lighting renovation will also improve the quality of public lighting in the municipality, improving uniformity, as lighting studies of the streets and public spaces have been previously carried out. EUROPE

Russia reacts to Finland’s alignment with NATO and closes gas pipeline to Europe: {Translation, summary}
Russian energy giant Gazprom announced on Thursday that it was halting gas supplies to Europe through a major Polish pipeline in response to Western sanctions over its offensive in Ukraine. This pipeline, the Yamal pipeline, had been carrying up to a quarter of Russian gas to Europe, but had been reducing its flow and was now at a record low.
The adoption of these measures “results in a ban on the use of a pipeline belonging to the Europol Gaz Group”, the statement said, referring to the pipeline run by the Polish part of the Yamal-Europ company. Russia has also announced sanctions against more than 30 companies in the European Union, the United States and Singapore. Among those affected are several Gazprom Germania subsidiaries.
