With work, but still in ‘the nest’: only 16% of those under 30 have emancipated: {Translation, summary} – Fewer and fewer young people under the age of 30 have managed to emancipate themselves. The high price of rentals, added to the fact that the cost of living has increased and that salaries have not grown in proportion, has made Spain show, in the latest report from the Emancipation Observatory, a slight recovery of the data, which are still terrible: only 15.9% of young people in Spain have managed to become independent (the worst historical figure is 14.9%), far from the 32.1% registered by the European average. – Emancipated young people in Spain barely exceed one million people (1,096,518), of whom 220,146 live alone (20.08%). This situation has meant that young people, in a hurry to emancipate themselves, have to resort to sharing a flat with strangers. According to this report, carried out by the Youth Council of Spain , 34.5% of those under 30 years of age who are independent use this formula because they cannot do it alone (27.2% of men, 14.7% of women). – Despite this, the cost remains high: young people allocate, on average, 26.8% of their salary to paying for their room. This is very close to the limit recommended by the Bank of Spain, which stands at 30%, so saving among young people is difficult. – The employment situation of the youngest does not help to change the trend either. Although the report indicates that the unemployment rate among those under 30 years of age is at its lowest point since 2008 (20.5%, compared to 22%), there is a smaller active population: 54.3% now compared to 67.10% at that time, so that the gross number of young people with work is actually less than before the crisis. Seniors of Nerja and Maro are the stars of Love and Friendship Day, 11 February: {Translation} – The Plaza de Andalucía will host the first of the events, called “Árboles de Amor” (Trees of Love), on 11 February at noon. There will be a tribute, through images and live music, to four couples from the municipality who have been married for more than fifty years: José García and María Navas, Manuel Reyes and Ana Cabello, Manuel García and María del Pilar Navas, and Antonio Cereto and Ana María Cerezo. – On 14 February, Valentine’s Day, the theatre show of the elderly will take place in the Sala Mercado at eleven o’clock in the morning. In the afternoon, at five o’clock, a snack will be offered to the elderly of Nerja and Maro in the Cueva de Nerja Restaurant. – The councillor pointed out that tickets for the snack will be handed out on 9 and 10 February in the Sala Mercado from ten in the morning to one in the afternoon, on presentation of the Nerja Senior Citizen Card. “An activity in which our seniors will enjoy an afternoon of conviviality, with the music of Plácido, and they will be given some gifts,” she said. Candlelight concerts in Seville & Malaga- music and candles in different stages of the city: {Translation, summary} – These are recitals of contemporary classical and baroque music, as well as universal hymns brought to the instrumental. Strangely enough, and this is synesthesia, they enter through the eye rather than through the ear. A meeting of chords and curious people who assume, as a starting point, that they have not lost the ability to discover nor, of course, the ability to be moved. Music and candles. The warmth, the light, the sound of the bow touching the string… ***Las Setas*** – When can we enjoy these concerts in Seville? Over the next few weeks, the Plaza de la Encarnación, the aquarium and the palatial Casa de Salinas will be the venues for the events. The first of these venues, La Setas, will open with the songs of the Beatles: ‘Yesterday’, ‘Help’, ‘Hey Jude’… On 12 February there will be a concert at 19:00 and another at 21:00. On 5 March, in the run-up to Women’s Day, it will be the turn of ‘Women in music’, which reviews emblematic works by icons such as Beyoncé, Madonna and the young Billie Eilish at 7 pm. – Finally, the popular soundtracks of Hans Zimmer will be the protagonists on 19 March. The exact location: Metropol Eventos, Setas de Sevilla, Puerta Este. The time: 19:00 and 21:00. And the duration: 60 minutes. ***Seville Aquarium*** – To the dim candlelight we must add another attraction: the enveloping Global Omnium Auditorium of the Aquarium of Seville, at the foot of the Guadalquivir. On 19 February, Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ will be performed acoustically at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. From 26 February to 16 March, a string quintet together with other guests, including a dancer, will perform excerpts from musicals and ballets such as ‘The Nutcracker’, also in two performances. ***Casa de Salinas*** – The third of the venues is the Casa de Salinas, a 16th century palace in the heart of the historic quarter: 39 Mateos Gago Street. There, Queen will be the backdrop for the tribute. Their music. Another prism to approach the British and, after all, world legend: ‘We will rock you’, ‘Bohemian rhapsody’? This is it: from purely instrumental music. Tickets are available at https://feverup.com/es/sevilla/candlelight from 15 euros. ***Malaga*** Visit this website to see all the CANDLELIGHT concerts scheduled in various intriging venues across Malaga, including a tribute to ABBA, The Nutcracker, Queen & Coldplay tributes, etc. https://feverup.com/es/malaga Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/queplan/sevilla/conciertos/candlelight-musica-velas-invierno-sevillano-20230204174121-nts.html

Will polar cold return this week?: {Translation, summary} Sunday, February 5, 2023, 12:47 – The temperatures during the weekend have shown a slight increase, alleviating somewhat the polar cold of the last week. Although the night frosts have remained in a good part of the country, during the day the values have been relatively pleasant for this time. But, according to the weather forecast from the State Meteorological Agency, the situation is going to change for next week. – Specifically in Malaga, Aemet already foresees a high possibility of rain from Tuesday, but mainly on Wednesday, the day of the week in which the percentage is between 90 and 100% in practically the entire province, although with less intensity in the Axarquia. The precipitations could be maintained during Thursday and decrease towards the weekend, although everything will depend on the evolution of the dana. – Regarding temperatures, in the capital, Axarquía and Valle del Guadalorce, Meteorology forecasts maximums that will oscillate between 15 and 18ºC; on the Costa del Sol, between 17 and 19ºC, and in the Serranía de Ronda, between 9 and 14ºC. Only in some inland municipalities are the maximum temperatures expected to drop below 10ºC. Apparently, the owner of the vehicle has said that he was not the driver involved, and claimed that his car had been stolen. – The identity of the victims is still unknown, beyond the fact that both are residents of Malaga city. The incident happened on a section of the old N-340 highway where it is not uncommon to see people crossing it or walking along its hard shoulder, due to the presence of nearby houses, beach bars and restaurants. Catching the bus between Costa towns and inland is set to become easier and cheaper: – A transport consortium is expanding to include buses within an area which stretches to Marbella, Antequera and Vélez-Málaga. The scheme is run by the Malaga Consorcio de Transporte del Área Metropolitano, a transport consortium initially formed by towns close to the city to improve mobility, especially for commuters. – Take the example of someone living in the inland town of Antequera who works or studies on the coast: they will soon be able to catch a local bus to the station, then another to Malaga and, once there, change to another bus or the city’s Metro using the same travel card and save at least 30 per cent of the fare on each stage of the journey. Dozens of dogs rescued as two illegal breeders closed down in Malaga: – Guardia Civil officers have rescued 48 dogs after closing down two illegal dog breeders in Alhaurín el Grande. Two people, both belonging to the same family, are under investigation for animal abuse as the dogs were found with numerous injuries and hernias and their tails had been amputated for aesthetic purposes and without veterinary supervision. – The dogs are all popular breeds including pinschers, dachshunds, French bulldogs, pugs and chihuahuas. After a number of enquiries, investigators found that the suspects were allegedly selling the animals via internet sales portals and identified several advertisements for the sale of animals that are believed to be related to these breeders. Maracena dedicates a space to the patron saint of cyclists: {Translation, summary} – The Virgen de Dorleta is the patron saint of cyclists and, from this Sunday, all those passionate about this sport have a meeting point in the town of Maracenza in the Parque Víctimas del Terrorismo. On the first Sunday in February, cyclists make their first official ride of the season and go to their patron saint to make a floral offering and pray for the safety of cyclists on the road. – Until now, the Maraceneros had to travel to Suspiro del Moro or Armilla to make this floral offering, which is why the different clubs have received the news with joy. “We have always gone to another place to make the offering, so having the Virgen de Dorleta in Maracena is a source of pride,” said Marcelo Mochón of Velo Club Maracena. ENERGY CRISIS
How will EU ban and West’s price cap on Russian diesel work?: – Europe’s ban takes effect Sunday (5/2) following its embargo on coal and most oil from Russia. The move is meant to further slash reliance on Russian energy and payments into the Kremlin’s war chest as the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine nears. – The newest energy sanctions have risks: Diesel prices have already jumped since the war started on Feb. 24, and there’s uncertainty about how the EU embargo and price cap by the Group of Seven major democracies will affect the market for a fuel crucial to the global economy. Public EV Charging Stations Can Be Hacked To Steal Your Credit Card Info: – Two new security weaknesses discovered in several electric vehicle (EV) charging systems could be exploited to remotely shut down charging stations and even expose them to data and energy theft. Two new security weaknesses discovered in several electric vehicle (EV) charging systems could be exploited to remotely shut down charging stations and even expose users to data and energy theft. The findings, which come from Israel-based SaiFlow, once again demonstrate the potential risks facing the EV charging infrastructure. – A cyber attacker could spoof a connection from a valid charger to its CSMS provider when it’s already connected, effectively leading to either of the two scenarios: 1. A denial-of-service (DoS) condition that arises when the CSMS provider closes the original WebSocket connection when a new connection is established 2. Information theft that stems from keeping the two connections alive but returning responses to the “new” rogue connection, permitting the adversary to access the driver’s personal data, credit card details, and CSMS credentials. (Also beware of rogue QR codes. If you pay by scanning a QR code with your mobile, closely inspect the QR code posted on the charging station, gas pump, parking meter, etc. Make sure the symbol is printed onto the surface, and that a rouge QR code sticker has not been placed on top the original. Rouge QR stickers can steal your payments. If it is a sticker, alert the attendant. -Ed.) Full article & image: https://thehackernews.com/2023/02/is-your-ev-charging-station-safe-new.html

30-year-old Bobi crowned world’s oldest dog ever by Guinness World Records: – Guinness World Records has announced that the record for the world’s oldest dog has officially been broken just weeks after another pooch was crowned. – Bobi the dog was born in the village of Conqueiros in Portugal on May 11, 1992 and is aged 30 years and 268 days-old as of Friday. He has been crowned the world’s oldest dog just two weeks after a 23-year-old chihuahua called Spike, from Ohio in the US, was awarded the title. But Bobi is not just the oldest living dog – he’s also officially the oldest dog on the planet ever. – This new title means Bobi has beaten the record of an Australian cattle dog called Bluey – who had lived 29 years and five months before his death in 1939. Bobi is a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo (He doesn’t look anything like the photos of Rafeiro do Alentejo dogs I looked up. -Ed) , which is a breed of livestock guardian dog with an average life expectancy of around 12 to 14 years. Spanish Social Security overcharge thousands of self-employed: – Thousands of self-employed people in Spain (autónomos) had a nasty surprise to start 2023. Checking their bank balances this week, many will have realised that Spain’s Social Security accidentally overcharged them, along with thousands of other people. – Spain’s Ministerio de Inclusión, Seguridad Social y Migraciones, which charges self-employed people every month, mistakenly charged the normal minimum fee to the newly self-employed, who are offered a special €80 flat rate. The error, which has been described as an “incident in the system” in the Spanish press, affected self-employed people who had registered between January 1st and 9th. – According to the Asociación de Trabajadores Autónomos (ATA), newly-registered self-employed people were charged the normal minimum monthly fee, which is €299, instead of the reduced €80 flat rate those who are self-employed start out by paying. Bank of England raises borrowing costs to 4%, hints interest rates near peak: – The Bank of England raised interest rates for the 10th straight time on Thursday and signalled the tide was turning in Britain’s battle against high inflation, forcing investors to dial down bets on a more aggressive tightening of policy. Softening their forecasts of recession this year, the BoE’s nine interest rate-setters voted 7-2 to increase Bank Rate to 4.0% – its highest since 2008 – from 3.5%. The move had been expected by most investors and economists. – The announcement comes a day after the U.S. Federal Reserve slowed the pace of its rate hikes with a smaller quarter-point move, but said it expected further increases would be needed. Groundhog Day 2023- Did Punxsutawney Phil See His Shadow?: – On February 2, 2023, it was revealed that Punxsutawney Phil did see his shadow on the morning of Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. – During the ceremony, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club gathered on a stage to deliver the news to the audience, who were very lively despite the early hours. The festivities had begun at 6 a.m. ET and the crowds were entertained with music and dancing before Punxsutawney Phil appeared at around 7.25 a.m. ET. – The audience could be heard cheering and chanting Phil’s name as he emerged from his den. Phil made his prediction by choosing a scroll and speaking, in secret, in a language known as “groundhogese” to the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle. The scroll was then read to the crowds, with the speaker saying: “Hear ye, hear ye. Now on this February 2, Punxsutawney Phil, the seer of seers, was awakened from his wintry nap at dawn on Gobbler’s Knob. “Phil looked to the skies and then, speaking in groundhogese, directed this president uncle to the proper scroll which reads, ‘I see the morning has brought the finest people, I see their bravery and spirit. The time has come, I can feel it. The excitement, I can hear it.'” – He continued: “I see the folks with gray in their hair, and I see the kids all young and scrawny. Their eyes and cheeks a glow from the cold clean air of sweet Punxsutawney. I see that everyone knows their part, and I am merely the sage, but above all else I see a shadow on my stage. So, no matter how you measure, it’s six more weeks of winter weather.” Full article: https://www.newsweek.com/groundhog-day-did-phil-see-his-shadow-punxsutawney-2023-winter-early-spring-1778433

ENERGY CRISIS
Shell profits branded ‘sickening’ as energy giant rakes in £68 billion in single year: – The UK Government has been called on to impose a fresh windfall tax on energy giants after Shell recorded the largest profit in its 115-year history. SNP, Labour, Greens and the Lib Dems have all urged the Conservative Government to expand its windfall tax after the energy company announced that its 2022 profits had rocketed to £68.1billion. – Shell have benefitted from increased energy costs following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Bumper profits by producers in 2022 prompted the Government to launch a windfall tax, called the Energy Profits Levy. – Shell said it paid £1.5 billion in windfall tax charges to the UK and EU. – The Scottish Greens energy and environment spokesperson Mark Ruskell called the profits “obscene” and said that investment in renewables was key to bringing down energy bills. Ruskell said: “Many will be sickened and angry by the obscene level of profits reported by Shell and the other oil and gas giants, who have enriched themselves at the cost of our planet. “There can be no justification for a system that allows this kind of profiteering, especially when so many are suffering. It is a sign of how broken things add and why they need to change. “It underlines exactly why we need to break the link between fossil fuel prices and bills, and support the many households and families who have been plunged into fuel poverty over the last 12 months.” Full article: https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/politics/shell-profits-branded-sickening-energy-29113726

Top Russian Official Thanks Pirates For Enabling Access to ‘Enemy’ Content: – Former Russian President Dimitry Medvedev used Telegram yesterday to thank pirates who developed programs to enable access to “expensive intellectual products” owned by Russia’s enemies. In future, everything from movies to industrial software will be pirated, Medvedev said. – “All that remains is to adopt the rules on the use of their intellectual property. Without any licenses and payment of royalties. This, among other things, will be our retaliatory sanctions on their property rights,” said the close Putin ally. The current proposal deals with film content, but for Medvedev, that doesn’t go far enough. He says the use of unlicensed content should cover “everything” from movies to industrial software – nothing will be off-limits. ARTIFICIAL INTELLEGENCE (AI)
Editor’s Note: This huge AI push we are now seeing all across the mainstream media reminds me of the Covid vax push. The new ChatGPT (AI Chatbot), and related AI services, have the potential to do monumental damage to society and the planet. Even the ChatGPT developers themselves admit they do not fully understand how it works (AI can analyse such huge quantities of data, it can find patterns and associations hidden from human understanding). This is another example of insufficiently tested tech being pushed on the public, as big-tech generates huge new profits with no concern for the consequences. ChatGPT Plus is here and it’s $20 a month: – OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and DALL-E 2, has announced ChatGPT Plus, a premium subscription plan for its conversational AI. The paid subscription service costs $20 per month and will give customers priority access, faster performance, and “priority access to new features and improvements.” – OpenAI seems to be grabbing onto the hype that ChatGPT created with both hands with all of these new products and services, and for a good reason. With a potential integration into Microsoft Bing and the creator of Gmail saying that ChatGPT could destroy Google in two years, the company has enormous upside right now. Army of scientists battles bacteria that has annihilated millions of olive trees: – Xylella, which originated in the Americas, measures little more than one thousandth of a millimeter. The bacterium multiplies in the sap-conducting vessels of a tree and can clog them, suffocating the branches. Insects of the Cicadellidae family, known as leafhoppers, are responsible for transporting the microbe from one plant to another. The main hypothesis is that the microorganism arrived in southern Italy in 2008, transported on ornamental coffee plants from Costa Rica. By the time it was detected in 2013, it was already too late. – Within a few years, the bacterium had wiped out more than six million trees. Landa recalls scenes of elderly farmers weeping, hugging their diseased centuries-old olive trees. The main strategy against the bacterium is to uproot the infected tree, and all others within 50 meters of it. – In Spain, the microbe was first detected in October 2016, in three cherry trees at a garden center in Mallorca, but Landa believes that the pathogen had entered the Balearic Islands much earlier, around 1994, in almond trees introduced from California. The regional government of the Balearics ordered thousands of trees to be uprooted in 2016, before surrendering to the evidence that it was already impossible to eradicate the bacterium in the Mediterranean archipelago. The other major focal point is in the province of Alicante, on Spain’s eastern coast, where an out-of-control epidemic is ravaging agriculture despite the uprooting of almost 190,000 almond trees since 2017. Olive growers on the peninsula are fearful: There are more than 300 million olive trees in Spain, which produce around half of the world’s olive oil. – So far the microbe is winning the war. “You have to learn to live with the bacteria and minimize the damage. What growers would like – to throw a pesticide at it and for the problem to simply disappear – will never happen,” says Landa, who was recently appointed president of the Spanish Society of Phytopathology. Some poisons decay without leaving a trace given enough time- Is this why the body of the antivirus creator John McAfee has been lying in a morgue in Barcelona for over a year and a half, waiting for a judge to authorize a second autopsy?: – John McAfee, the famous creator of the antivirus software named after him, who had publicly announced on social media that he would never commit suicide, and even had a tattoo “WHACKD” confirming this attitude, died inside a prison in Spain’s northeastern region of Catalonia on June 23, 2021 aged 75, after being informed that a Spanish court had approved his extradition to the United States where he was wanted for tax crimes. Forensic experts concluded that he committed suicide, without providing the autopsy results. Since then, his body has been kept at -18ºC at the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences of Catalonia, waiting for a judge to decide whether to accept new proceedings or definitively shelve the case. In a recent interview held in Costa del Sol, where she is staying with friends, his partner Janice McAfee, 40, said that too much time has elapsed: “It’s difficult to not feel that this is intentionally cruel and intentionally inhumane, because so much time has passed.” Full article: https://english.elpais.com/spain/2023-02-01/janice-mcafee-i-came-to-spain-with-john-and-i-dont-want-to-leave-without-him.html Additional reference: “Did John McAfee Hint at His Death 2 Years Back? ‘Whackd’ Tattoo on Arm Sparks Conspiracy Theory”, https://www.ibtimes.sg/did-john-mcafee-hint-his-death-2-years-back-whackd-tattoo-hand-sparks-conspiracy-theory-58370

PETS
Cat Needs Home: We are still looking for a safe and warm permanent home for our sweet foster boy Campanilo. Campanilo was seriously ill when he was brought to the ‘Refugio de Leo’ as a kitten. He has been to the vet many times. The trauma caused permanent neurological damage (Ataxie) He remains quite small and is somewhat shaky and unstable when walking. He sometimes falls over while jumping or playing. Fortunately his ailment is not too serious and he can walk, run and play well. We have been taking care of him for six weeks and we we have experienced that, once Campanilo gets used to you, he is an incredibly sweet, grateful, affectionate and playful pet who loves your company. He really needs a loving home where he can stay for good since we will be leaving Spain erelong. Campanilo is less than a year old. Apart from his limps he is healthy, has had all tests and shots and has been neutered. He can easily live in an apartment and does not have to go outside, also because he will probably not be able to defend himself against other animals. Who wants to take good care of this very sweet black and white cat or knows someone who would? Please contact Bob and Jolanda (Torrox Costa) 0031-622911037 Email: bobnoletATgmail.com

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announces plans to raise minimum wage by 8 percent in move called politicking by unions: – The announcement by Prime Minister Sánchez comes just months before municipal polls in various regions and a general election which is due by the year’s end. “We’re going to approve a new 8.0 percent increase in the minimum wage to reach €1,080” gross across 14 months, Sánchez told the Senate upper house of parliament. – Spain traditionally makes salary payments in 14 monthly payments per year, with the extra paychecks typically paid in July and December. “We are respecting our commitment” to raise the minimum wage “to 60 percent of the average Spanish salary,” he said. Split across 12 months, that would equate to a gross payment of €1,260. Full article: https://www.thelocal.es/20230201/spain-to-raise-minimum-wage-by-8-percent/

Until now, these slopes were open partially and with reduced opening hours in order to preserve the lower areas – with a shortage of snow – which have now been consolidated. – With the opening of the Laguna, the preferred area for expert skiers, Sierra Nevada puts into service its entire skiable slope, the 1,200 metres that separate the vicinity of the Veleta peak and the Pradollano development. – For the incorporation of the Laguna to the skiing offer, the intense work of the resort’s ski instructors has been decisive, with important snow movements in the lower part of this area, and the snow production in the final section of the Trucha. Nevertheless, the Sierra Nevada slopes department has warned that skiing in the Laguna de las Yeguas must be carried out with special caution, always within the marked pistes and restricted to expert skiers. – Now, the efforts are concentrated on the El Águila piste, the longest in Sierra Nevada, and on the Fuente del Tesoro piste, one of the most iconic black slopes of the resort together with Neveros, which is already operational. The reinforcement of the snowmaking system at these points has been decisive in favour of its imminent opening. – With this new situation, the Granadan winter resort will now have all its areas open, all the slopes and the long runs to reach a total of 70 skiable kilometres. – Likewise, in the Loma de Dílar area, sectors 1 and 3 of the snowpark are already open, with rails only, and the Estrella de las Nieves mini-park with modules only. Windows 11 Rumours- Some 2017 models to be added to the Win 11 compatibility list: Techie websites are saying that Microsoft has mentioned in it’s user forums that Windows 11, currently restricted to devices with 8th Gen Intel or 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen (2018 or newer) processors, will be made available to devices with 7th Gen Intel or 2rd Gen AMD Ryzen (2017 or newer) processors. Computers with older processors, before 2017, may be able to update to Windows 11, using a modified install media and a change in the BIOS “TPM settings”, but Microsoft discourages this and will offer no support, and may not provide updates, to those devices. Windows 10 is scheduled to be retired mid-Oct 2025. Windows 12 may be released as early as mid 2024. Reference: https://inf.news/en/digital/9d4ac775ba2f77daf3f0ad255bb233f5.html
ARTIFICIAL INTELLEGENCE (AI)
Google testing potential ChatGPT rivals including a homegrown AI chatbot called ‘Apprentice Bard’: This is just weeks after the tech giant’s management reportedly issued a “code red” over the rise of ChatGPT, which has been making waves recently as it’s able to generate written human-like text. Apprentice Bard appears to work in a way that’s similar to ChatGPT, as users can ask a question in a dialog box and get an answer in response. Users can also give feedback on the bot’s response. Other than the Apprentice Bard, Google is also testing other AI-powered products, including a search page. Google did not comment specifically on the projects but told Insider it has “long been focused on developing and deploying AI to improve people’s lives.” (Read: increase profits) Full article: https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-google-ai-chatbot-apprentice-bard-artificial-intelligence-2023-2

Cheaters beware- ChatGPT maker releases AI detection tool: – The maker of ChatGPT is trying to curb its reputation as a freewheeling cheating machine with a new tool that can help teachers detect if a student or artificial intelligence wrote that homework. – The new AI Text Classifier launched Tuesday by OpenAI follows a weeks-long discussion at schools and colleges over fears that ChatGPT’s ability to write just about anything on command could fuel academic dishonesty and hinder learning. OpenAI cautions that its new tool – like others already available – is not foolproof. The method for detecting AI-written text “is imperfect and it will be wrong sometimes,” said Jan Leike, head of OpenAI’s alignment team tasked to make its systems safer. “Because of that, it shouldn’t be solely relied upon when making decisions,” Leike said. – The Seattle Public Schools district has adopted a concerning approach. The district initially blocked ChatGPT on all school devices in December but then opened access to educators who want to use it as a teaching tool, said Tim Robinson, the district spokesman. “We can’t afford to ignore it,” Robinson said. The district is also discussing possibly expanding the use of ChatGPT into classrooms to let teachers use it to train students to be better critical thinkers and to let students use the application as a “personal tutor” or to help generate new ideas when working on an assignment, Robinson said. SPAIN
Spain falls for the second consecutive year in the fight against corruption: {Translation} – Spain has not advanced in the last year in the fight against corruption according to the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2022, published today by Transparency International, which shows that it has dropped again one point compared to 2021 and three in relation to to 2020 and stands at a score of 60 out of one hundred. The study reflects that 95 percent of the countries have made little or no progress since 2017. – Thus, Spain occupies position 35/180 in the global CPI ranking, along with Botswana, Cape Verde and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. If the comparison is made in relation to the countries of the European Union, Spain ranks 14 out of 27, two points below Portugal and Lithuania (62/100) and one point above Latvia (59/100). – Spain obtained “a worse score” in the category of “irregular payments in public services, exports and imports and judicial decisions in cases of corruption”. To this, they add other causes such as: the fact that Spain “still does not meet the standards set by the Council of Europe on the general councils of the judiciary”, in reference to the election of the General Council of the Judiciary; it continues to be behind in the adequate regulation of interest groups, incompatibilities and prevention of conflicts of interest of personnel at the service of the public sector, as well as a notable delay in relation to the adoption of a new regulatory framework for transparency, access to public information and good government. – Finally, they add that, despite the provisions of the Code of Conduct of the Cortes Generales, “more than half of parliamentarians do not publish their institutional agendas” and those that are published contain inconsistant information, as well as the lack of transparency. We can now take ‘tupperware’ to the supermarket: {Translation, summary} – From 1 January, large food retail outlets selling fresh produce must accept reusable containers carried by consumers, bags or reusable containers. Of course, the standard is not mandatory for consumers, only for those who want it voluntarily. Also, some stores, usually butchers, will not comply, claiming allowing foreign objects into their workspace risks contamination and that they are aware of the new law, but say their managers are “reviewing” the situation. – “Can you put it in my container instead of in paper wrapper and a plastic bag?” The butcher is not surprised by the request. “Sure,” he looks at the container, and proceeds. He weighs it so that the scale, which has a tare function to zero out the weight with the empty container on the scale, only counts the amount of product, without the container weight. Andalusia’s reservoirs lose some water after eight weeks of recovery: {Translation} – Andalusia’s reservoirs have lost some water, after eight consecutive weeks of recovery thanks to the rainfall, and now stand at 28.23 percent of their capacity with 3,153 cubic hectometres (hm3), which is two cubic hectometres less in the last seven days. However, this 28.23 percent of water reserve is a percentage 1.7 points lower compared to the previous year, when with 3,343 cubic hectometres the reservoirs were at 29.93 percent. – In the last week the water stored in the reservoirs of the Guadalquivir basin has risen eleven points to 25.3 percent with a total of 2,032 cubic hectometres, while those of the Andalusian Mediterranean Basin are down to 37.7 percent with a total of 443 cubic hectometres, one less than seven days ago. These are the two main reservoir systems in Andalusia. The others are the Tinto, Odiel and Piedras in Huelva, and the Guadalete-Barbate in Cádiz. The reservoirs in Huelva are down to 178 hm3, with their reserve at 77.7 percent of their capacity, and those in Cádiz are down one to 500, 30.3 percent. – At the national level, meanwhile, the water reserve has increased again this week, with 242 cubic hectometres of water collected, representing 0.4 percent of the total, according to data from the Ministry, which reports that this week the reservoirs are at 51.3 percent of their total capacity, with 28,775 hm3 of water. Despite weeks of increase, the reservoirs hold 11.23 percent less water than the average for the decade and 14.50 percent more than at the same time a year ago. The Euribor has no brakes- it soars to 3.33% and makes variable mortgages almost 200 euros more expensive: {Translation, summary} – Bad news for mortgage holders. The one-year Euribor has closed January at its highest value since 2008, climbing to a monthly average of 3.337%, pending confirmation of the data by the Bank of Spain on Wednesday. The benchmark for most variable mortgages in Spain has accelerated its rise in the first month of 2023, so that those whose installments are reviewed in the coming days will see one of the steepest rises in recent years. – The benchmark has rebounded on Tuesday to 3.413%, the highest daily rate since 15 December 2008. This data closes the month of January, in which the Euribor has maintained its upward trend. The average for the first month of the year is almost 32 basis points higher than the 3.018% recorded in December, when the 3% barrier was crossed for the first time after the housing bubble. Someone Remind Me Why Fuel Prices Are So High- Exxon smashes Western oil majors’ earnings record with $56 billion profit for 2022: – Exxon Mobil Corp posted a $56 billion profit for 2022, the company said on Tuesday, taking home about $6.3 million per hour last year, and setting not only a company record but a historic high for the Western oil industry. – Oil majors are expected to break their own annual records on high prices and soaring demand, pushing their combined take to near $200 billion. The scale has renewed criticism of the oil industry and sparked calls for more countries to levy windfall profit taxes on the companies. – Exxon’s results far exceeded the then-record $45.2 billion net profit it reported in 2008, when oil hit $142 per barrel, 30% above last year’s average price. Deep cost cuts during the pandemic helped supercharge last year’s earnings. “Overall earnings and cashflow were up pretty significantly year on year,” Exxon Chief Financial Officer Kathryn Mikells told Reuters. “So that came really from a combination of strong markets, strong throughput, strong production, and really good cost control.” – Exxon said it incurred a $1.3 billion hit to its fourth-quarter earnings from a European Union windfall tax that began in the final quarter and from asset impairments. The company is suing the EU, arguing that the levy exceeds its legal authority. – Excluding charges, profit for the full year was $59.1 billion. Production was up by about 100,000 barrels of oil and gas per day over a year ago to 3.8 million bpd. Adjusted per share profit of $3.40 beat consensus of $3.29 per share, according to Refinitiv data. Full article: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/exxon-smashes-western-oil-majors-113239797.html

NERJA
The alleged perpetrator of numerous burglaries of rural houses in Nerja arrested: {Translation} – Alarm has been caused among neighbours in the area of the River de la Miel, located to the east of the municipality of Nerja, by a series of burglaries on rural properties. A dozen houses have been broken into while their owners were away. The Guardia Civil has arrested a suspected perpetrator of the robberies. – The burglaries began in December and continued into January. The suspect appeared to use the same ‘modus operandis’, first checking for the absence of people in the homes before gaining access to them in the early hours of the morning, forcing locks and climbing fences. – The owners, uneasy, reported the facts on social networks and to the Guardia Civil. The investigation was taken over by the agents of the Armed Institute of the Axarquia municipality and resulted in the arrest of a 40 year old neighbour with a criminal record for similar acts in other rural dwellings in Nerja and Frigiliana. During a search of his rural home, the police found objects reported stolen. The rest was allegedly sold on the black market. The value of the looted items, including agricultural machinery and technology, as well as cash, is estimated at 15,000 euros, including the damage caused to the properties. EUROPE
The European Commission in Brussels detects that about 40 percent of online stores use manipulative sales practices: {Translation, summary} – Nearly 40 percent of online retail shops use manipulative practices to push consumers into making purchasing decisions, a report by the European Commission and consumer protection authorities in 23 member states said on Monday. In total, the analysis covered 399 online shops in a range of sectors, from clothing to electronics, of which 148 used some form of practice to influence customer behaviour to make decisions that may not always be in their best interests, known as ‘dark patterns’. – In this regard, 42 sites used a fake countdown with a deadline time to make a purchase of specific products, while another 54 shops directed consumers to certain choices, such as subscriptions or more expensive products, through their web design. The report found that 70 other sites hid or withheld information relevant to customers, such as shipping costs, product composition or the possibility of a cheaper price. Another 23 hid information with the aim of getting consumers to subscribe to some kind of service. – “This behaviour is clearly wrong and contrary to consumer protection. Today we already have binding tools to help tackle these problems and I call on the national authorities to use their enforcement powers to take appropriate action to combat these practices,” said Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders on the report. He said Brussels is reviewing all consumer protection legislation to make sure it is fit for the digital age, “including to assess whether dark patterns are adequately covered”. Dutch PM- Schengen May Not Survive If Dublin Regulations Are Not Renewed: – The Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, has said that Schengen will not survive if the Dublin regulations are not renewed. His comments came following the current migration situation while demanding the renewal of the registration of migrants at the EU’s external borders, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports. – Rutte’s comments came after a conversation with the Chancellor of Austria, Karl Nehammer while stressing that the Dublin system permits migrants to be returned to the first country of entry into the European Union. The Prime Minister of the Netherlands called on the European Union to help protect the EU’s external borders by helping Bulgaria with border security. In addition, he stressed that the border controls currently in place between Germany, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary as well as Slovenia show that Schengen is failing. Football News- Real Madrid vs FC Barcelona and Osasuna vs Athletic, these are the Copa del Rey semifinals: {Translation, summary} – The draw held on Monday at the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas (Madrid) has decided that the semi-finals of the 2022-2023 edition of the Copa del Rey will be between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona and between CA Osasuna and Athletic Club. – Thus, there will be a Clasico between Madrid and FC Barcelona, very important for both teams as one of the two will be left without the chance to win another title this season, while a door opens for the ‘rojillos’ and the ‘lions’ to reach a cup final in an always attractive match of northern rivalry. – The format of this penultimate round of the ‘k.o’ competition is a two-legged affair, with the Santiago Bernabéu and El Sadar hosting the first legs, and the Spotify Camp Nou and San Mamés the second legs. Due to Real Madrid’s participation in the Club World Cup, the first matches will not be played as scheduled next week but will be played on 28 February, 1 or 2 March, when the second legs were scheduled, which will now be moved to April on 4, 5 or 6. Top French University Bans ChatGPT Use to Prevent Plagiarism Amongst Students: – Universities around Europe, in addition to those in the United States, have started banning ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot that can create quite coherent writing content based on the users’ demand. The latest university to ban the use of ChatGPT has been the French university of Science Po, which cited fraud and plagiarism as the main reasons for taking this measure. – However, the university hasn’t specified how it would track usage of the tool, but several universities, especially those in the United States have intentions to assign more hand-written essays and oral exams instead of take-home assessments. Several public schools in New York City and Seattle have introduced a ban on this tool for all their students, while Sciences Po, whose main campus is in Paris, pointed out there will be a punishment for using the software, such as expelling from the university or even from French higher education entirely. Recommendation for DoctorLaptop: I have to give a big shout to Naythan who works very hard to get us our daily digamextra. But an extra thank you for sorting out my laptop. The hard drive went and Naythan managed to retrieve important files, install another hard drive in my laptop, replace the saved data into the new hard drive, and have it working again in the same day. Very competent, professional and what he charged was worth every euro. I highly recommend you to use this service. Lab leak WAS the ‘most likely’ cause of Covid-19, UN experts claim as they accuse top British and American scientists of helping China to suppress debate on the issue: – The authors of two United Nations reports into the origins of the pandemic say they believe a laboratory leak was the most likely cause of Covid-19, accusing top British and American scientists of helping China deliberately to suppress debate on the issue. The distinguished professors hit out at the ‘cover-up’ in a damning joint article for The Mail on Sunday that calls for ‘re-evaluation of the likely pathways that caused this pandemic’. – They say ‘a pall of suspicious secrecy, deceit and conflicts of interest’ shrouded high-risk experiments being carried out in Wuhan, the Chinese city where Covid first appeared, and argue that it was ‘enforced not only by China but by Western funding bodies and influential Western scientists’. The dramatic intervention comes from epidemiologists Colin Butler (based at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health in Canberra, Australia) and Delia Randolph (of the University of Greenwich, London). The poorest neighborhoods in Spain are in Seville and Alicante: {Translation, summary} – Alicante and Seville are the cities where the poorest neighborhoods in Spain are located, while their provinces contain a good number of the lowest-income towns in the country. – This is indicated by data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which indicates how the lowest incomes in Spain, differentiated by neighborhoods, were located in the Seville neighborhoods of Polígono Sur, Los Pajaritos {pic} and Amate, and in the Juan XXIII neighborhood of Alicante. In addition, other areas of Seville or Alicante appear on the list of the ten next poorest neighborhoods in the country. – Along with this, in the list of the 20 municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants with the lowest income per inhabitant recently published by the INE for the year 2019, there are towns in Seville such as Los Palacios – Villafranca or Lebrija, and Alicante such as Torrevieja or Crevillente. Both the workshops and the fabrics and materials are free of charge, and the workshops will conclude with a parade of the designs produced. TORROX
Torrox is the only municipality on the Costa del Sol that increases its population by more than 5%: {Translation, summary} – The census data made public by the National Statistics Institute (INE) as of 1 January 2021 leaves Torrox as the only town on the Costa del Sol with a growth in the last year of over 5%. Specifically, the municipality has gone from 18,937 inhabitants on 1 January 2021 to 19,997 in 2022. – Torrox is followed by Casares (4.6%) and Benalmádena (4%). Only Estepona and Mijas are above 3%, while Nerja and Manilva grew by 2%. The rest are around 1% growth, with the exception of Málaga city and Fuengirola, which are below this percentage. – “The fact that one out of every four Torroxeños registered in Torrox today have done so in the last 8 years is an unequivocal example of the leap in quality that our municipality has made in all aspects since 2015, as is the fact that it is the fastest growing town by far compared to other municipalities on the Costa del Sol. This is something we should all be proud of and confirms that we are on the right track,” said the municipal authority. Artificial Intelligence “ChatGPT” (an advanced AI chatbot) found to be capable of passing MBA and Medical Licensing Exams: – The AI chatbot can hold conversational text interactions with users by employing artificial intelligence. It can generate responses to questions (a feature that could eventually challenge search engines), generate text for prose, write code, make calculations, translate information, and more. – The academic community is growing increasingly concerned about students using ChatGPT for less than honest purposes as it has been found to be capable of not only writing essays for high school students, but passing some exams, such as parts of those used to license doctors and grant MBAs. – In two new papers posted on preprint servers, one team and another researcher independently tested the ability of ChatGPT to take and pass exams. In the first a team with members from AnsibleHealth, Inc., Brown University and OpenAI, Inc. describe testing they did to see how well ChatGPT could do on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and posted their results on the medRXiv preprint server. – In the second, Christian Terwiesch, the Andrew M. Heller Professor at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, has posted a paper on Wharton’s preprint site, describing how he tested the chatbot’s ability to perform on the final exam of a typical Operations Management MBA core course and what he found. – In the first paper, the researchers tested the chatbot on all three parts of the USMLE, which medical school graduates must pass to become doctors. They found it performed well enough to pass or nearly pass all of the required thresholds for licensure. They also noted that it was capable of creating written passages that were highly consistent and showed the type of insight a person would need to become a successful doctor. – In the second paper, Terwiesch used OpenAI’s GPT-3 (the base model for ChatGPT) to take the final exam for an Operations Management course. He then graded it as he would any regular student. He found that he would have given the paper a B, or at worst a B-, more than enough to pass. He further notes that in addition to giving correct answers, the chatbot was able to provide good explanations for its answers. {Sooner than you think, many of your previous human consultations, with doctors, lawyers, bankers, etc., will be done with AI chatbots. This may be an improvement in some ways, AI will have instant access to far more knowledge than any human. What AI does not have is any degree of compassion, sympathy, spirituality or shared human experience. Clearly there are advantages and disadvantages. – Most written content as well as artwork, web design, and even music will be AI created. AI is far more efficient and cost effective than human labor, so this trend seems inevitable. – Rogue AI chatbots will be used for criminal activities, to produce ever more effective scams. It will be used to create nearly undetectable forgeries and frauds. It will design smarter computer viruses. We already see a flood of “deep fake” photos and videos on social media, made with AI tools. Strange days indeed! -Ed.} Full article: https://techxplore.com/news/2023-01-chatgpt-capable-exams-mba-medical.html Want to try ChatGPT for yourself, for free? Spanish reservoirs fill up to highest level since last May: – The water levels of Spanish reservoirs continue to rise and are already at 50.9 percent of their capacity, the latest data reveals, a figure that has not been seen since May 2022. – Asturias is the region that has benefitted from the recent rains the most and the capacity of its reservoirs currently stands at 92.76 percent. This is followed by its neighbour Galicia where levels are currently at 88.6 percent. In third place is the Basque Country where reservoirs have reached 68.05 percent capacity. – This lies in stark contrast to the south of Spain where levels are still very low. The capacity of the reservoirs in Murcia is only at 25.68 percent and in Andalusia it’s only 29.75 percent. ALGECIRAS
Sacristan killed and priest injured in suspected jihadist attack in Algeciras: – The assailant of north African origin, who has been arrested, stabbed the men, shouting “Allah akbar”. He is the sole suspect in both cases. – A sacristan has died and a priest is seriously injured, with at least four people suffering less serious injuries, in two attacks on churches in Algeciras, in the province of Cadiz. According to all sources, the attacks appear to be jihad-related and the investigation has been taken over by a court specialising in terror offences. – The victim of the fatal attack is David Valencia, a sacristan at La Palma church, and the injured man is Father Antonio Rodríguez, parish priest at the chapel of San Isidro. The latter was taken to hospital in a serious condition with a stab wound. – The fatal attack at the church of La Palma was the second of the two attacks, and took place at around 7.30pm. The man, dressed in a djellaba, entered the building shouting “Allah Akbar” (“God is the greatest”) when the service was ending. He moved through the church knocking down images, crosses and candles with a machete and even went up to the high altar. – The sacristan approached him to ask him to leave the church. The suspect refused and insulted him. He also threatened two women, and when the sacristan asked him to leave again the man began to chase him. He caught up with the sacristan outside in the nearby Plaza Alta where he stabbed him and beat him around the head, causing his death. EU Nationals Travelling to UK on February 1 Warned of Prolonged Waiting Times Due to Strikes: – The United Kingdom’s Home Office and Border Force have warned people travelling to the UK on February 1, to prepare for facing longer waiting times at border controls due to strikes that will take place at all UK air and maritime ports. 100,000 members of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), across 123 employers, will stage a walkout on February 1, impacting government ministries, museums, ports, and airports. – Travellers passing through border controls in Calais, Dunkirk and Coquelles in Northern France will also be affected by the strikes. – “If you are travelling into the UK via any entry point, you should prepare for disruption and check before you travel,” the UK authorities have noted in a statement, adding that the strikes are expected to last until February 2, at 7 am. Insects on the menu as EU approves two for human consumption: – The maggot-like larvae of lesser mealworms — a type of shiny black beetle — and house crickets will become the third and fourth insects that can be sold as food for people in the European Union. Eight more applications await approval. On Tuesday, the EU gave the green light to the sale of the larvae in powder, frozen, paste and dried forms. The crickets can be sold as partially defatted powder. The new rules clarify that lesser mealworm larvae and house crickets are safe to eat for those without allergies. They have also ruled that foods containing them must be labeled. – A more likely role for insect protein could be feeding it to livestock. This would bypass cultural norms that prevent some people from wanting to eat insects. If the insects were raised on organic waste — as some mealworm and fly larvae are well-suited to — the process could effectively recycle some of the vast quantities of food wasted each year. – But raising insects to feed them to animals adds an extra step in the food production process that means more energy is lost to inefficiencies. Only some of the calories the insect eats will make it to the chicken raised on insect feed — and only some of those calories will make it to the person eating the chicken wing. If the insects were fed crops like soy or corn, and those insects are then used as feed for livestock, the planet may be worse off than if the animals ate the grains directly. Photo: AFLO. Denmark calls for mandatory military service for women: – Denmark plans compulsory military conscription for women, as the Nordic country seeks to significantly boost the size of its armed forces. The move can help Denmark meet its requirements under its Nato membership. It would also be “beneficial” for the military if it had more women employed, Jakob Ellemann-Jensen, the country’s defence minister and deputy prime minister, said in an interview with broadcaster TV2. – Currently, women can join on a voluntary basis while men generally are required to serve if they are called on under a lottery system. – The new measure has the backing of several women’s organisations and comes as Denmark, like the rest of Europe, provides increasing levels of support to Ukraine in the war to oust Russia from the country. British museums to stop using ‘mummy’ over negative associations: – The word, say critics, has ties to imperialism and monsters, and should be replaced with ‘mummified remains.’ Conservatives are having a field day with the move. – It’s not clear that Tutankhamun or Ramses II would appreciate the deference from the afterlife, but British museums are certainly providing plenty of material for conservative columnists who regularly gloat over wokeness or anything that sounds like political correctness. The British Museum in London, the National Museums of Scotland and the Great North Museum: Hancock have decided that, whenever possible, they will stop using the term “mummy” and speak instead of the “mummified remains of” the individual in question. Spain ‘ready’ to send German tanks to Ukraine: – “Spain is ready… to deal with our allies in any way necessary, whether that means sending Leopards, training in the use of Leopards or help in their maintenance and upkeep,” Defence Minister Margarita Robles said. She did not say how many tanks could be sent, nor when they could be delivered. Her remarks came shortly after Berlin said it would send some of its own Leopards to Kyiv and cleared other European nations to send their own stocks to Ukraine. – Russia denounced Berlin’s decision to approve deliveries of Leopard tanks to Ukraine as “extremely dangerous”, warning it would take the conflict “to a new level of confrontation”. LastPass Parent Company GoTo (formerly remote assistance app LogMeIn) Suffers Data Breach, Customers’ Backups Compromised: – {I regularly warn readers not to use Password-Saver apps like LastPass, and to uninstall remote assistance apps like LogMeIn as soon as you are done using them. These are all cloud based tools, and the cloud is NOT secure. These apps provide hackers access to your computer when these all too frequent hacks of the app databases occur. -Ed.} – LastPass owner GoTo (formerly LogMeIn) on Tuesday disclosed that unidentified threat actors were able to steal encrypted backups of some customers’ data along with an encryption key for some of those backups in a November 2022 incident. The breach, which targeted a third-party cloud storage service, impacted Central, Pro, join.me, Hamachi, and RemotelyAnywhere products, the company said. – “The affected information, which varies by product, may include account usernames, salted and hashed passwords, a portion of multi-factor Authentication (MFA) settings, as well as some product settings and licensing information,” GoTo’s Paddy Srinivasan said. – The announcement comes nearly two months after both GoTo and LastPass disclosed “unusual activity within a third-party cloud storage service” that’s shared by the two platforms. – LastPass, in December 2022, also revealed that the digital burglary leveraged information stolen from an earlier breach that took place in August and enabled the adversary to steal a massive stash of customer data, including a backup of their encrypted password vaults. The obtained information was “used to target another employee, obtaining credentials and keys which were used to access and decrypt some storage volumes within the cloud-based storage service,” it noted. How to see the green comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) visible in the night sky now as it approaches Earth: – Gorgeous green comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) should now be visible to the naked eye under the right dark sky conditions. – The comet is rapidly approaching perigee, its closest point to Earth, which is making it easier to spot in the night sky. The comet, first discovered in March 2022 by astronomers Frank Masci and Bryce Bolin using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) at the Palomar Observatory in California, has been brightening since November, wowing astrophotographers with its brilliant green tail. – Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) is currently making its way through the northern skies and should reach its brightest magnitude in early February, according to In-The-Sky.org as it approaches perigee on Feb. 1. To see the comet for yourself, look to the north just after sunset and look for a faint greenish glow. Under the right dark sky conditions, the comet could be visible to the unaided eye, but binoculars will certainly make the job easier. – SpaceWeather.com reported that comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) formed what is known as an “anti-tail,” a phenomenon which causes a comet to appear to have a second, forward-facing tail. In reality, an anti-tail is an optical illusion caused when larger dust particles form a disk along the comet’s orbit. As Earth passes through the comet’s orbital plane, this dusty disk can be seen side-on, appearing as a reversed anti-tail. Photo: TheSkyLive. The rise in the price of electricity in 2022 made it 30% more expensive to recharge an electric car: {Translation, summary} – The average cost of recharging an electric vehicle in Spain increased by 30% in 2022 due to the increase in the price of electricity in the country. This increase in cost is exemplified in the analysis with a journey between Madrid and Barcelona (626 kilometers away) with a 100% electric vehicle, whose charging cost would have risen to 49 euros on average in 2022 on the Zunder network, compared to the 37.5 euros of the previous year. – The eToro report qualifies that the price of recharging electric vehicles varies depending on the place where it is carried out, since in homes it is lower than that reached in public networks. The boom in aerothermal heating equipment is so great in Spain that the Government is already offering aid to install it: {Translation, summary} – In case you did not know it, aerothermal energy is another type of renewable energy that takes advantage of the thermal energy that is already in the air and transfers it to the interior of the house, thus providing heating and hot water. That is to say, it is a heat pump and it is captured by means of an exchanger and an external environment fan. One of the main characteristics is that it only consumes energy electrical for the compressor motor to work, this means that for every kWh it uses, it generates 3 kWh of heat energy. – The boom in aerothermal heating equipment has led the Government to offer aid from the Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. According to the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), these “aids vary between 40% to 70%, depending on the technology used”, in addition, the base amount of the subsidies are: Residential sector: 500 euros/kW of aid with a maximum value of aid of 3,000 euros/dwelling. Publicly owned homes and the third sector : 650 euros/kW of aid with a maximum value of 3,900 euros/home. – There is an additional grant to adjust the air conditioning and electrical circuits: Underfloor heating: 600 euros/kW with a limit of 3,600 euros per home. Low temperature radiators or fan coils: 550 euros/kW with a limit of 1,830 euros per home. – The aid can be requested until December 31, 2023 through this website ( https://www.idae.es/ayudas-y-financiacion/para-energias-renovables-en-autoconsumo-almacenamiento-y-termicas-sector/estado-de-las-convocatorias-por-comunidad-autonoma-rd-4772021-climatizacion-renovable-residencial ), in addition, users may have an inspection made according to their Autonomous Community. ANDALUCIA
These are the medicines that are in short supply in Andalusian pharmacies: {Translation, summary} – Andalusian pharmacies, like those throughout the country, are having problems with the supply of certain medicines, which are either not being supplied by the laboratories or are arriving in dribs and drabs. When a drug does not meet national consumption needs, the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) officially considers it to be a “supply problem”. – The current problem is that some of the affected drugs are widely used. This is the case of Efferalgan, a brand name, and amoxicillin, a generic antibiotic. Efferalgan is a medicine from the UPSA laboratory that began to have supply problems as early as August 2021 and worsened at the end of last year; children’s doses are now also in short supply. Its active ingredient is paracetamol. – The Cordoba College of Pharmacists told ABC of other medicines with shortages: Ozempic, for diabetics; Tardyferon, iron pills to prevent and treat anaemia; Caverject, a vasodilator that acts like Viagra; Rivotril (Clonazepam/Klonopin), a benzodiazepine tranquilizer; and Zitromax, another antibiotic. Guardia Civil smash illegal tobacco ring exploiting Ukrainians fleeing war: – Spain’s Guardia Civil said on Sunday that they had dismantled a gang that were operating three illegal tobacco factories employing Ukrainians who fled to escape Russia’s invasion and were kept in ‘crammed’ housing. The operation is alleged to have smuggled ‘large quantities’ of tobacco transformed into counterfeit cigarettes that were sold across Spain and neighbouring countries, the police force said in a statement. – The factories, located in Logroño, in the northern wine-producing region of La Rioja, in Seville in the south and Valencia in the east, used ‘advanced technology’ and could produce 540,000 cigarette packs per day, it added. Police said the ring employed Ukrainians who had moved to Spain illegally or had entered the country legally seeking refuge from the war. – The Ukrainians lived in the factories, ‘crammed into prefabricated modules, and without leaving the facilities so as not to be detected, working long hours’, the statement said. Austria Firm on Its Stance Against Expansion of Schengen Area: During a visit to Bulgaria, Chancellor Nehammer stressed that Austria has concerns over illegal migration and at the same time pointed out that the Schengen area cannot be expanded at the moment as the system is in a major crisis. “It is clear that our Schengen veto is not directed against a country, but that the Schengen area does not work and cannot be expanded at the moment. In order to be able to reopen internal borders, Bulgaria must be supported in effectively protecting the external borders,” Nehammer wrote on his official Twitter account. “We need a clear signal at the European level that the front-line countries in the face of migrant pressure are not left alone to deal with this problem,” Chancellor Nehammer stressed. Apple iOS 16.3 Released- What’s New On Your iPhone: – Apple has just released the stable build of iOS 16.3 for all compatible iPhones, and it brings a few notable features. The first and most important change of them all is support for hardware security keys to protect your Apple ID. A security key is an external device that looks like a USB thumb drive but serves the critical job of identity verification. These keys are mostly deployed as an added layer of protection in the same vein as two-factor authentication, but the idea here is that instead of receiving a two-factor code on your registered mobile number or email address (which can be intercepted by a bad actor), a security key handles two-factor verification at the hardware level. Right now, a physical security key is the most fool-proof system for protecting your accounts and wallets because it is always in your possession. Using a physical security key is an optional feature on iPhones. – Other changes are support for the second-gen HomePod smart speaker, as well as a wider rollout of the Advanced Data Protection feature that now encrypts 23 types of data (photos, notes, etc.) stored in your iCloud storage. New Unity wallpapers honoring Black History Month are here, as well. Apple has also tweaked the button gesture for activating an SOS alert on iPhones. You will now have to hold and release the power + volume button combo to call an emergency helpline. Earlier, users were only required to long-press these buttons, which led to accidental SOS calls. ARTIFICIAL INTELLEGENCE (AI)
AI is coming to your workplace. Is Europe ready?: – While artificial intelligence tools have been deployed in the gig economy for a while now, they are making rapid inroads into other sectors. What does it mean for your job? – Renan Rodrigues had been working as a food delivery driver at Swiss company Smood for about a year and a half when “the robot” took over. This is how the 33-year-old describes the algorithm-powered program that allocated deliveries and shifts for him and his colleagues. Smood had used such software since he started working there in 2020, Rodrigues told DW. But at a certain point, “the robot” became entirely responsible for planning his working day, according to him, and appealing decisions to human managers was no longer possible. – The goal of “the robot” was to organize deliveries in the most efficient way possible. From his employer’s perspective, Rodrigues is sure that it worked. When he started at Smood in the small Swiss town of Yverdon-Les-Bains, it was typical to do around two deliveries an hour, he said. By the time he left, it was more like four or five. But at what cost in human terms? Full article: https://www.dw.com/en/ai-is-coming-to-your-workplace-is-europe-ready/a-64472539
SCIENCE
Earth’s inner core rotation may be reversing: – The rotation of the Earth’s solid inner core may have recently paused and could be reversing, according to a study published in Nature Geoscience this week. These findings indicate that changes in the rotation could occur on a decadal scale and could aid our understanding of how processes deep in the Earth affect its surface. – Yi Yang and Xiaodong Song analysed the difference in the waveform and travel time of seismic waves from near-identical earthquakes that have passed through the Earth’s inner core along similar paths since the 1960s. They found that since around 2009, paths that previously showed significant temporal variation have exhibited little change, suggesting that the inner core rotation has paused. They also identified that this may be associated with a reversal of the inner core rotation as part of a seven-decade oscillation with a previous turning point occurring in the early 1970s. The authors indicate that this variation correlates with changes in geophysical observations at the Earth’s surface, such as the magnetic field and the length of day.
