The rise in the price of electricity in 2022 made it 30% more expensive to recharge an electric car: {Translation, summary}
– The average cost of recharging an electric vehicle in Spain increased by 30% in 2022 due to the increase in the price of electricity in the country. This increase in cost is exemplified in the analysis with a journey between Madrid and Barcelona (626 kilometers away) with a 100% electric vehicle, whose charging cost would have risen to 49 euros on average in 2022 on the Zunder network, compared to the 37.5 euros of the previous year.
– The eToro report qualifies that the price of recharging electric vehicles varies depending on the place where it is carried out, since in homes it is lower than that reached in public networks. The boom in aerothermal heating equipment is so great in Spain that the Government is already offering aid to install it: {Translation, summary}
– In case you did not know it, aerothermal energy is another type of renewable energy that takes advantage of the thermal energy that is already in the air and transfers it to the interior of the house, thus providing heating and hot water. That is to say, it is a heat pump and it is captured by means of an exchanger and an external environment fan. One of the main characteristics is that it only consumes energy electrical for the compressor motor to work, this means that for every kWh it uses, it generates 3 kWh of heat energy.
– The boom in aerothermal heating equipment has led the Government to offer aid from the Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. According to the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), these “aids vary between 40% to 70%, depending on the technology used”, in addition, the base amount of the subsidies are:
Residential sector: 500 euros/kW of aid with a maximum value of aid of 3,000 euros/dwelling.
Publicly owned homes and the third sector : 650 euros/kW of aid with a maximum value of 3,900 euros/home.
– There is an additional grant to adjust the air conditioning and electrical circuits:
Underfloor heating: 600 euros/kW with a limit of 3,600 euros per home.
Low temperature radiators or fan coils: 550 euros/kW with a limit of 1,830 euros per home.
– The aid can be requested until December 31, 2023 through this website ( https://www.idae.es/ayudas-y-financiacion/para-energias-renovables-en-autoconsumo-almacenamiento-y-termicas-sector/estado-de-las-convocatorias-por-comunidad-autonoma-rd-4772021-climatizacion-renovable-residencial ), in addition, users may have an inspection made according to their Autonomous Community. ANDALUCIA
These are the medicines that are in short supply in Andalusian pharmacies: {Translation, summary}
– Andalusian pharmacies, like those throughout the country, are having problems with the supply of certain medicines, which are either not being supplied by the laboratories or are arriving in dribs and drabs. When a drug does not meet national consumption needs, the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) officially considers it to be a “supply problem”.
– The current problem is that some of the affected drugs are widely used. This is the case of Efferalgan, a brand name, and amoxicillin, a generic antibiotic. Efferalgan is a medicine from the UPSA laboratory that began to have supply problems as early as August 2021 and worsened at the end of last year; children’s doses are now also in short supply. Its active ingredient is paracetamol.
– The Cordoba College of Pharmacists told ABC of other medicines with shortages: Ozempic, for diabetics; Tardyferon, iron pills to prevent and treat anaemia; Caverject, a vasodilator that acts like Viagra; Rivotril (Clonazepam/Klonopin), a benzodiazepine tranquilizer; and Zitromax, another antibiotic. What weather can we expect in the south of Spain for the rest of this week?:
– The low temperatures will continue to be felt across this week in Andalucía, especially on Thursday, due to the location of an anticyclone that will cause a mass of cold and dry air to enter the Spanish mainland that will leave maximum values of between eight and 15 degrees Celsius, and minimums that will be below zero degrees in some parts of the region.
– Looking ahead to Friday and Saturday, the weather expert indicated that “little cloudiness is expected” but on Sunday “there could be an increase, with the probability of showers on the Mediterranean coast.” As for the maximum temperatures, they will be relatively low for this time of year both inland and in the Mediterranean coast areas, but “they will not be exceptional”. Guardia Civil smash illegal tobacco ring exploiting Ukrainians fleeing war:
– Spain’s Guardia Civil said on Sunday that they had dismantled a gang that were operating three illegal tobacco factories employing Ukrainians who fled to escape Russia’s invasion and were kept in ‘crammed’ housing. The operation is alleged to have smuggled ‘large quantities’ of tobacco transformed into counterfeit cigarettes that were sold across Spain and neighbouring countries, the police force said in a statement.
– The factories, located in Logroño, in the northern wine-producing region of La Rioja, in Seville in the south and Valencia in the east, used ‘advanced technology’ and could produce 540,000 cigarette packs per day, it added. Police said the ring employed Ukrainians who had moved to Spain illegally or had entered the country legally seeking refuge from the war.
– The Ukrainians lived in the factories, ‘crammed into prefabricated modules, and without leaving the facilities so as not to be detected, working long hours’, the statement said. Austria Firm on Its Stance Against Expansion of Schengen Area: During a visit to Bulgaria, Chancellor Nehammer stressed that Austria has concerns over illegal migration and at the same time pointed out that the Schengen area cannot be expanded at the moment as the system is in a major crisis. “It is clear that our Schengen veto is not directed against a country, but that the Schengen area does not work and cannot be expanded at the moment. In order to be able to reopen internal borders, Bulgaria must be supported in effectively protecting the external borders,” Nehammer wrote on his official Twitter account. “We need a clear signal at the European level that the front-line countries in the face of migrant pressure are not left alone to deal with this problem,” Chancellor Nehammer stressed. Food Alert- Tedi recalls children’s biscuits for containing substances hazardous to health: {Translation}
– Aldiva’s Unicorn biscuits have been withdrawn from the market for containing substances that may be hazardous to health. Thus, the German-based bazaar chain Tedi, which is present in most of Spain, has been ordered to withdraw the product from sale because it contains levels of 3-Mcpd and glycidyl.
– These children’s biscuits, whose reference number is 1225200202021000000150, began to be marketed in shops from 17 September until 17 January 2023, according to Facua. The price was 1.75 euros.
– The retail chain advises against continuing to consume these biscuits, as the presence of these substances can be harmful to health, and informs users that they can obtain a refund for the product, or exchange it for another item offered in their shops. Apple iOS 16.3 Released- What’s New On Your iPhone:
– Apple has just released the stable build of iOS 16.3 for all compatible iPhones, and it brings a few notable features. The first and most important change of them all is support for hardware security keys to protect your Apple ID. A security key is an external device that looks like a USB thumb drive but serves the critical job of identity verification. These keys are mostly deployed as an added layer of protection in the same vein as two-factor authentication, but the idea here is that instead of receiving a two-factor code on your registered mobile number or email address (which can be intercepted by a bad actor), a security key handles two-factor verification at the hardware level. Right now, a physical security key is the most fool-proof system for protecting your accounts and wallets because it is always in your possession. Using a physical security key is an optional feature on iPhones.
– Other changes are support for the second-gen HomePod smart speaker, as well as a wider rollout of the Advanced Data Protection feature that now encrypts 23 types of data (photos, notes, etc.) stored in your iCloud storage. New Unity wallpapers honoring Black History Month are here, as well. Apple has also tweaked the button gesture for activating an SOS alert on iPhones. You will now have to hold and release the power + volume button combo to call an emergency helpline. Earlier, users were only required to long-press these buttons, which led to accidental SOS calls.

Microsoft lays off 10,000 workers same week it invests $10 Billion in Artificial Intellegence (AI) firm:
– The rumors are true, Microsoft is investing $10 billion in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT and DALL-E 2. The investment is the third phase of Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI in an attempt to “accelerate AI breakthroughs to ensure these benefits are broadly shared with the world,” the company wrote in a blog post.
– This deal was announced less than a week after Microsoft announced that it would lay off 10,000 people — about five percent of its workforce — by the end of the third quarter of the 2023 fiscal year. Looks like Microsoft is all-in on replacing as many human employees as possible with AI robots. Full article: https://mashable.com/article/microsoft-open-ai-chat-gpt

ARTIFICIAL INTELLEGENCE (AI)
AI is coming to your workplace. Is Europe ready?:
– While artificial intelligence tools have been deployed in the gig economy for a while now, they are making rapid inroads into other sectors. What does it mean for your job?
– Renan Rodrigues had been working as a food delivery driver at Swiss company Smood for about a year and a half when “the robot” took over. This is how the 33-year-old describes the algorithm-powered program that allocated deliveries and shifts for him and his colleagues. Smood had used such software since he started working there in 2020, Rodrigues told DW. But at a certain point, “the robot” became entirely responsible for planning his working day, according to him, and appealing decisions to human managers was no longer possible.
– The goal of “the robot” was to organize deliveries in the most efficient way possible. From his employer’s perspective, Rodrigues is sure that it worked. When he started at Smood in the small Swiss town of Yverdon-Les-Bains, it was typical to do around two deliveries an hour, he said. By the time he left, it was more like four or five. But at what cost in human terms? Full article: https://www.dw.com/en/ai-is-coming-to-your-workplace-is-europe-ready/a-64472539
SCIENCE
Earth’s inner core rotation may be reversing:
– The rotation of the Earth’s solid inner core may have recently paused and could be reversing, according to a study published in Nature Geoscience this week. These findings indicate that changes in the rotation could occur on a decadal scale and could aid our understanding of how processes deep in the Earth affect its surface.
– Yi Yang and Xiaodong Song analysed the difference in the waveform and travel time of seismic waves from near-identical earthquakes that have passed through the Earth’s inner core along similar paths since the 1960s. They found that since around 2009, paths that previously showed significant temporal variation have exhibited little change, suggesting that the inner core rotation has paused. They also identified that this may be associated with a reversal of the inner core rotation as part of a seven-decade oscillation with a previous turning point occurring in the early 1970s. The authors indicate that this variation correlates with changes in geophysical observations at the Earth’s surface, such as the magnetic field and the length of day.
