Logistics employers denounce the “excessive violence” of transport stoppages, supply chain interruptions and government inaction:
{Translation} 17/03/2022 20:22
-The logistics employers’ organisation UNO denounces the “excessive violence” in the transport stoppages, as well as “the absence of measures by the government to guarantee the safety of those who want to exercise their right to work to guarantee supplies”. This was the opinion of the organisation’s president, Francisco Aranda, who added that “the demonstrations have been escalating with more violence and acts of vandalism are taking place”.
-At the moment, companies are holding their breath in the face of the road transport stoppages, organised by the Platform for the Defence of the Transport Sector. The mobilisations by hauliers, which began on Monday, have intensified over the days and have led to cuts in the supply chain and production stoppages in sectors such as foodstuffs.
-With the conflict expected to escalate, the employers’ organisation CEOE has called an emergency meeting of the sectors to measure the damage of the crisis and demand measures, as published in this newspaper.
-The logistics organisation UNO has gone on to call on the government to act in the face of the situation of energy costs, but also especially in the face of a possible cut in the supply chain resulting from the stoppages. “We demand that the Ministry of the Interior act immediately to guarantee the rule of law and that whoever wants to can work freely, so that we can ensure the proper functioning of the supply chain,” Aranda demanded, while insisting on the need to “facilitate the work of companies”.
-The employers’ association has demanded that the government take measures at once, instead of waiting two more weeks to deal with the high energy costs, which are already suffocating companies and which have sparked the mobilisations of small transport. “We are energy-intensive companies and we need extraordinary measures in the face of this extraordinary situation, because companies have been bleeding to death with these costs for a long time now”, concluded Aranda. OCU denounces the 54% increase in the price of the butane cylinder: {Translation, summary} 17Mar22 11am
-The Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) warns of a new rise in the price of butane, the ninth consecutive increase that raises its price to €18.63, accumulating an increase of 54% since September 2020.
-OCU points out that although in this new price review there were expectations of a drop due to the reduction of the tariff deficit and the lower demand once the winter is over, the war in Ukraine and the uncontrolled increase in raw material prices have led to a new rise that places the cylinder at €18.63 as of tomorrow, 15 March.
-This is an increase of 4.96% on the previous price, which is within the legal limit of 5%. In any case, this new rise, the ninth in a row, has meant that, in year-on-year terms, the cylinder has gone from being worth €13.96 to €18.63, an increase of nearly five euros and 33.5%, which represents the biggest increase in butane prices since the current system was set up and the maximum legal increase allowed by the regulations. Sánchez’s plans to cap gas prices meet with doubts from EU partners: {Translation} 17/03/2022 18:03
– Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s plans to set a maximum price for gas or to change the pricing system to separate gas from electricity are generating doubts among several EU partners, who are sceptical that the measures will work and consider that intervening in the electricity market opens the door to “killing competition”.
-In the midst of Sánchez’s tour of Europe to forge alliances ahead of the meeting of EU leaders on 24 and 25 March, in which the government is going to put all the pressure on its partners to take measures at European level, several member states have expressed serious doubts about the measures that Spain, along with Portugal and Italy, are proposing to curb the escalation in electricity prices.
-“There is now a consensus that these proposals have shortcomings and there are doubts about the impact on real life”, said diplomatic sources from a European delegation that is very sceptical about the Spanish proposals.
-Specifically, the idea of decoupling the price of gas from the price of electricity is, in the eyes of this European partner, “killing competition in the energy market” and warns of negative consequences for investment in renewable energies.
-This feeling is shared by another part of the EU-27, which questions whether this type of measure will work. Another EU country criticises the fact that Spain has so far failed to present any analysis explaining how capping gas prices would work.
-“There are real-world problems in all these fantasies”, say diplomatic sources from this other member state, which argues that energy suppliers may prioritise other international markets if the European market is tapped.
-The country also points out that decoupling the price of gas from the price of electricity “removes incentives for renewable energy producers” and the collateral effect would be to damage advances in solar, wind and hydrogen energy.
-With this in mind, the energy issue is expected to dominate the EU leaders’ dinner next Thursday and the meeting is expected to last well into the early hours of the morning, given the declared intention of Sánchez and other European leaders for the EU to take action now with urgent measures to curb the price boom.
-Sánchez believes that the EU should not postpone taking decisions and that the situation requires rapid and urgent measures to limit the impact on citizens, businesses and industry, as he is conveying to his EU partners on his tour.
-Spain and Portugal have already announced that they will propose a limit of 180 euros on the price of gas and, in any case, have not closed the door to taking measures of their own, although the Vice-President of the Government responsible for Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, has already warned that the “worst possible scenario” is to have 27 different solutions to tackle a shared problem in the EU. Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/economia/energia-00341/noticia-planes-sanchez-limitar-precio-gas-topan-dudas-varios-socios-ue-20220317180340.html

AXARQUIA

Rare seal, native to the North Atlantic and Arctic Pole, spotted along Andalusian coastline: A rare specimen of the grey seal, native to the North Atlantic and the Arctic Pole, has been spotted in recent weeks at various points along the Andalusian coast.
-On 18 February it was spotted in Doñana, Huelva and the following day in the bay of Cadiz.
-Subsequently, on 7 March, it was detected between Alhucemas, Melilla and the Chafarinas Islands.
-Last Tuesday it was found on the Estepona beach of El Saladillo, and Wednesday on El Peñoncillo beach in Torrox. By Thursday the animal had made it to Motril, in Granada province.
-The animal, an adult specimen, “does not appear to be ill,” explained the Aula del Mar biologist José Luis Mons, who travelled to Estepona to see the seal. “It could be tired, although it might have ingested something and is having trouble digesting its food, which is why it has come to the shore to rest,” said the expert, who has asked residents to stay away from the animal and to notify the local police or the Guardia Civil if they see it. MALAGA

The transport strike is starting to cause supply problems in Malaga: {Translation} 17Mar22 12:29
-Mercamálaga is beginning to feel the effects of the hauliers’ strike, called by the Platform in Defence of the National and International Freight Transport Sector. The protests, which this morning have caused a traffic jam in the centre of Malaga, are beginning to cause shortages of some products four days after the start of the stoppages.
-The Central Supply Market of Malaga, Mercamálaga, has already reported that the volume of goods has fallen by 80% between fish, seafood, fruit and vegetables. Although they point out that supplies are still guaranteed. Even so, in the markets and supermarkets of the province, the lack of some fresh produce is already being felt.
-The situation is not generalised in the supermarkets, but some are noticing the lack of some fresh products such as fish, fruit and vegetables, depending on the day and whether the lorry supplying them has been able to complete its journey or not.
-And this could worsen in the next few days, when this stoppage is joined by the strike in the fishing sector in the province, which has already announced that its boats will not go out to fish from next Tuesday, and the stoppage which, they have said, is being forced on livestock farmers due to the lack of transport to sell their milk.
-Meanwhile, the transport strike is also intensifying in the province. At the door of the Malaga Goods Transport Consortium (CTM), again this Thursday, there are pickets that are “blocking the entry of lorries”, according to workers of the same, who admit that the activity is being paralysed.
-As sources from the wholesalers’ associations Acmerma (Fruit and Vegetables) and Ampesme (Fish and Seafood) have explained to Europa Press, this drop has not affected the wholesalers in their workload, nor when it comes to supplying retailers.
-According to them, “there is no supply problem”, as they “stockpiled the previous days and thanks to our improvements in conservation we can work well in distribution”.
-Some companies in the PTA in Malaga are also beginning to notice the lack of some supplies and the impossibility for the lorries to go out to do their work as usual. In the port of Malaga, the stoppage is also resulting in less lorry traffic. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/huelga-transportistas-problemas-abastecimiento-malaga_0_1666034015.html

TECH

DoctorLaptop’s Tips #97, 18Mar22
Email Basics- You Are Supposed To Check Your Spam Folder Daily:
-Saying you didn’t see an email because it went to Spam is NOT an excuse for missing emails. It is only an admission you are not using your email account properly.
*Here is what you need to know*
-Spam filters were never claimed to be perfect, they often make mistakes. Spam filters separate what are “probably safe” emails from “probably junk” emails, for your convenience. When checking your email, Users are expected to look closely at items in their Inbox, and quickly scan thru items in your Spam folder to look for mis-classified items.
-If you find emails in Spam that are legit, move them to your Inbox, and after that they will go to your Inbox instead of Spam.
-Don’t let your Spam folder fill up, empty Spam weekly.
-Do not even open emails in Spam unless you recognize the sender’s email. Hovering your cursor arrow over the sender’s name will reveal the sender’s email address. If you know the name, but the address looks wrong, just delete it. Some scammer got hold of your contact list of names, and is using those names on emails they send you in hopes you’ll open the email routinely, without checking the address before opening it. If you use a free email service, or WhatsApp, or any social media, your list of contacts may have been exposed. These contact lists are often sold by corrupt tech company employees and third party contractors, for added income.
-Some infected emails can slip “fragments” of malware into your system just by being viewed, you don’t even have to open attachments they contain or click on any links. An emoji or any image in the email can contain hidden “poison pixels” with malware fragments! This is why emojis are banned from DigameXtra, and all posted pics get scanned for hidden pixels before posting. Since they are only “fragments” your anti-virus does not detect them. When you accumulate enough “fragments” they assemble themselves into working malware and go to work, immediately downloading more malware from the internet. The longer they remain in your Spam folder, the higher the risk they infect your system. -DoctorLaptop Reference: https://www.sentinelone.com/blog/hiding-code-inside-images-malware-steganography/

A fully aligned James Webb Space Telescope captures a glorious image of a star: Eighteen mirror segments on NASA’s newest space telescope worked in unison to take this deep field image.
-It’s a feat that would be impossible had the space telescope’s 18 mirror segments not been aligned precisely. Those 18 hexagonal segments make up Webb’s 21.3-foot-wide primary mirror. These hexagons had to travel to space folded—the mirror could only be unfolded after the telescope reached its targeted Lagrange point, 930,000 miles from Earth. There, it unfurled its sun shield and other components.
-Aligning Webb’s many mirror segments was no small task, especially in the extreme conditions of space. This was achieved by finely controlling multiple motors behind each segment. It was a crucial phase and a big milestone, allowing NASA to produce images with unprecedented clarity, as it did this week. Photo:NASA. Happy St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day, feast day (March 17) of St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. Born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century, he was kidnapped at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave. He escaped but returned about 432 ce to convert the Irish to Christianity. By the time of his death on March 17, 461, he had established monasteries, churches, and schools. Many legends grew up around him—for example, that he drove the snakes out of Ireland and used the shamrock to explain the Trinity. Ireland came to celebrate his day with religious services and feasts. Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated on Thursday, March 17, 2022. Editor’s Note on Transport Strike: I went to Aldi in Torrox Costa this afternoon. The bread, meat, veg and fruit sections were TOTALLY EMPTY. Very few dairy items remained. No girasol sunflower oil. Other than these items, shelves were stocked normally. When I asked about it, the checkout clerk just shrugged and said they had no fresh items, stock could return any day, but probably not until Monday. I don’t know if this is an isolated situation. Anyone else seeing such severe shortages? -Ed.

SPAIN

The dairy industry will stop its activity starting tomorrow due to the stoppage of carriers: The collapse in the supply chain is already a reality after the three days of the indefinite strike called by the Platform for the Defense of the Transport Sector. The Spanish dairy industry will stop its activity as of tomorrow, Thursday, due to the impossibility of manufacturing dairy products and then transporting them to supermarkets. Specifically, the National Federation of Dairy Industries (Fenil) announced today in a statement that it is forced to suspend its activity as a result of the protests promoted by small carriers. As a consequence of these work stoppages, the factories have seen the supply of the necessary inputs for the production of dairy products interrupted and the transfer of the products to the distribution chains has also been suspended. Gov’t will lower the price of electricity, gas and petrol on the 29th, although it does not say how it will do so: {Translation, 1st 3 paragraphs}
-On Wednesday, the government pledged to lower the price of electricity, gas and petrol on 29 March, when it plans to approve a decree law containing the measures of the national response plan to the economic consequences of the war in Ukraine.
-This was announced by the Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños, who said that the government is currently studying different “alternatives” to achieve this objective.
-“We are going to work to ensure that the consensus includes the European Union (EU) partners, and if there is no consensus, the government will also take measures. We are considering different formulas, from State aid, taxation, price caps or (establishing) a single price for energy so that it can be made cheaper”, he explained. Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/andalucia/1036327/el-gobierno-bajara-el-precio-de-luz-gas-y-gasolina-el-dia-29-aunque-no-dice-como-lo-hara/
(See response from the President la Junta de Galicia below)

Feijóo warns Sánchez- “We cannot wait for all Spain’s problems to be solved in Brussels”: {Translation} The president of La Junta de Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, criticised on Wednesday that the government had come to the meeting with the PP parliamentary group to discuss the measures of the National Response Plan for the Economic Consequences of War “without a single proposal” and urged the government to take immediate action without relying on European partners. “We cannot wait for all of Spain’s problems to be solved in Brussels,” he said.
– Núñez Feijóo described the current situation in Spain as “of maximum risk for families, for many companies and for workers” and regretted that, according to his colleagues in Congress, the Government went to Wednesday’s meeting without “a single piece of paper” of proposals.
-“We have no specifics, no timetable, no quantification of what taxes are going to fall, how much public spending is going to fall or how we are going to reduce bureaucratic spending by the State Administration,” said Núñez Feijóo
-In contrast, the Galician president explained that the proposals of the Popular Party “are well known”: “We need to lower taxes on energy and fuel, if it can be yesterday, better than tomorrow,” he said. At the same time, he stressed, it is necessary to “reduce bureaucratic and political public spending in the General Administration to plug the holes that we are beginning to have in the public accounts”.
-For Núñez Feijóo there is an urgent need to “make decisions”, as the country is “in a moment of extraordinary difficulty”, in which “once a company closes, it is very difficult to open another one”. “By saving a little money and not reducing the price of energy and fuel, we are going to create enormous public expenditure by increasing unemployment and the social security contributions of people who lose their jobs”, he concluded. Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/nacional/noticia-feijoo-advierte-sanchez-no-podemos-esperar-todos-problemas-espana-resuelvan-bruselas-20220316150726.html

Transport workers’ strike and fishermen’s blockade threaten fresh produce supply: {Translation}  16/03/2022 21:48
-The fourth day of the indefinite strike called by the Platform for the Defence of the Freight Transport Sector in protest at the price of diesel has resulted in the first closures in factories in the food sector and alarm at the threat to supplies. The rise in fuel prices is also being felt in the fishing sector, as boats are not going out to sea because of the exorbitant prices. These circumstances are beginning to threaten the supply of fresh produce.
-This strike and the blockades on some roads have already forced the stoppage of fishing ports, flour factories, livestock plants and commercial activity in the aquaculture sector, according to the Efe news agency.
-The Federation of Food and Drink Industries (FIAB) has called on the government to coordinate between the ministries of Agriculture, Interior and Transport to reach an “urgent solution” and “avoid shortages and the consequent paralysis of activity” in a statement.
-The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, who spoke about this issue in the Congress of Deputies and at a press conference, acknowledged that this stoppage is having some “occasional disruption” in the food chain, especially in the places of origin of supplies, such as ports.
-He made an appeal for “serenity” in the face of the current “regular and normal” supply situation, although he pointed out that his department is closely monitoring this protest “so that it does not cause any shortages”.
-The Minister for Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez, has guaranteed that the government “will ensure that lorry drivers who want to work can do so” and that it will act with the “utmost forcefulness” in the face of the incidents that are occurring on some roads.
***Chain situation***
-In the country’s main food platform, Mercamadrid, on Wednesday, the goods received were once again reduced by half, a fall of up to 60% in the case of fish, seafood, fruit and vegetables. The fruit wholesalers of this market, Asomafrut, have already warned of possible problems in the supply of fruit and vegetables if the strike of the most perishable products, such as strawberries, aubergines, courgettes and tomatoes, persists.
-In the case of seafood products, the associations of fish wholesalers and retailers in Madrid have asked the administrations to “guarantee safety” in the transport of goods on all roads.
-Meanwhile, in Barcelona, the Association of Fruit and Vegetable Wholesalers of Barcelona (AGEM) has predicted that the strike “will become evident” from Wednesday onwards and that it will lead to a reduction in the distribution of certain products. On the manufacturers’ side, there are already companies in the agri-food sector that have had to stop and specific sectors, such as aquaculture, which has announced the indefinite cessation of its commercial activity.
-The dairy, bottled water and table olive production industries have also announced that they have been forced to do the same in the coming hours or days. On the livestock production side, interprofessional associations of livestock farmers, feed industry and aquaculture employers’ associations have warned of the closure of numerous factories, especially in central and southern Spain.
-They have also drawn attention to the lack of animal feed on farms. The animal feed industry has assured in a joint statement that it is unable to supply raw materials in most parts of Spain as a result of the strike. Malaga goes green with solar panels above cemetery niches to reduce spiraling electricity costs: Malaga city council has decided to install solar panels on the niches in the cemetery in an effort to reduce electricity costs. Parcemasa has just put the first phase of the scheme to tender, for solar panels on 38 of the 212 blocks in the San Gabriel cemetery. They will be the type which do not lift or turn with the sun, a design which means they will not receive as much power, but they will not be visible from the ground. Photo: Ñito Salas. Full article:

Golden Leaves Funeral Plans:
Pre-planning your funeral is a thoughtful and responsible way to show you care about your family.
Funerals are no easy task. There are numerous considerations to factor in, including logistics, food and drink, casket purchase and burial grounds. A loved one’s death brings immense emotional strain to any family, and the question of financing and arrangements only exacerbates the stress.

Halting Erosion Using Vetiver Grass from Vetiver Spain:
Vetiver Grass is a fast growing non-invasive clumping grass that grows to 2 metres in height. It has a root system that grows to 3-4 metres deep and they are very strong.
The National Geographic Magazine has called them “Roots of Steel”.
Once Vetiver is established it is drought resistant.
We are located in Sayalonga and we can plant all year round but February and March are the best months to plant Vetiver. Vetiver loves the heat of a long summer to get established.
Decomposing Vetiver used as a mulch, improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away as it is a natural insect repellent. It is in the same family as Lemon Grass, which we also carry.
Vetiver also is a nutritious and replenishable animal feed. Horses, cattle, and pigs love it.
We use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive Ornamental hedge.

Covid Malaga- Number of people hospitalised for Covid in Malaga rises on a day with 5 deaths and a higher incidence of disease: {Translation} 15Mar22, 14:10
-The Ministry of Health and Families of the Andalusian Regional Government has reported on Tuesday an increase of eight people hospitalised by Covid in Malaga compared to the previous day, with 168 at present, 15 of them in Intensive Care Units (ICU). There are also five more deaths to report, bringing the total to 2,319.
-This Tuesday, moreover, 614 official positives have been reported by PDIA (PCR and antigen test).
-The cumulative incidence of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days has increased in all health districts and, therefore, in the province as a whole, from 340.0 to 365.4, and in the capital of Malaga, which has a rate of 464.1 (430.0 the latest available data).
-In the case of the health districts, it rises in Axarquia, which goes from 330.1 to 351; in Serrania, from 485.8 to 496.7.
-The incidence also rises in Costa del Sol, from 261.9 to 276.8; in La Vega, from 300.9 to 331.7; in the Malaga health district from 422.9 to 455.7 and in Valle del Guadalhorce from 274.9 to 313.7. SPAIN

War economy – these are the foods that are going to rise in price fastest: {Translation}
-The war between Ukraine and Russia is causing prices to rise dramatically. Fuel prices are at record highs and electricity prices are also rising, making the shopping basket 30% more expensive.
-The rise in the price of groceries comes in a context in which inflation has been rising steadily since the summer of last year, reaching 7.6% in February.
-Because Ukraine is one of the main foreign suppliers of sunflower corn, wheat or cereals, products such as bread, cereals or beverages such as beer are the products that are going to increase in price the most.
-And an increase in cereal and fertiliser prices will have a direct impact on meat and sausages, as well as on bakery products because of the flours used in these products.
-Just as food prices are on the rise, so are other essential products. The price of electricity has risen the most (80%), but it is also known that liquid fuels have risen by more than 50%; olive oil has risen by 30.6%, and edible oils have risen by 30.6%. Pasta has incidentally risen by almost 20% and fruit (10%), rice (9.4%) and whole and skimmed milk have also risen by almost 9.5%. Source, Spanish:

AXARQUIA

Travel agency owner sentenced to 4 years in prison for defrauding clients in Torrox: {Translation}
-The owner of a travel agency located in Torrox is facing a four-year prison sentence for allegedly keeping the money he received from his foreign clients to book excursions and stays in Spain, according to Málaga Hoy.
-The 61-year-old German national will be tried next week in the Provincial Court of Malaga and will sit in the dock for an alleged continuous offence of fraud, according to the prosecution.
-The Public Prosecutor’s Office maintains that the accused had been operating a travel agency since at least 2016 and, in the course of his work, received various amounts from his clients (both individuals and other foreign travel agencies). These clients contracted excursions and stays in Spain with him and paid in each case the corresponding amount for the agreed service. “The accused allegedly kept the amounts received without making the corresponding reservations in the hotels previously arranged.
-Among the injured parties is a foreigner, a mediator in the organisation of trips, who contracted with the accused, between 7 and 11 November 2016, various stays and excursions in Andalusia for his own clients and paid 22,655 euros for them.
-However, the defendant allegedly did not make any of the agreed reservations and the injured party also had to pay a total amount of 6,200 euros in damages to his clients.
-In the same way, he acted with another foreigner who booked with the defendant a stay in Madrid between 30 September and 6 October 2017 and paid 783 euros for it, money that the defendant also allegedly kept without also making any reservation, so that the injured party had to pay 941 euros to pay for his stay.
-Two other clients, also foreigners, booked trips to Valencia and Seville and, in neither case, made the agreed reservation and allegedly took the money. Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiaplus.es/piden-4-anos-de-carcel-al-dueno-de-una-agencia-de-viajes-por-estafar-a-clientes-en-torrox/

ALMERIA

Luxury prefabricated housing community for foreigners, on land designated for campsites, dismantled in Sorbas, Almería: {Translation}
-A luxury resort, with prefabricated dwellings, is what was hidden in Sorbas behind an establishment that had a two-star licence with rural category for campsites. This illegal settlement that had been set up had 29 ‘mobile homes’ that had been sold to foreigners in their entirety.
-It was the urban inspection services of the Andalusian Regional Ministry of Development, Infrastructures and Territorial Planning who detected the advertisements on the internet aimed at British, French, Dutch and German citizens. “Opportunity to invest abroad in a dream home for permanent residence or to spend some time”, the advertisements said.
-The owners of the alleged campsite sold the prefabricated houses by renting a plot of land, providing water, electricity, sanitation and waste services, and even took out home insurance.
-The ‘mobile-homes’ were sold for between 45,000 and 156,000 euros, depending on their size and features, but lacked any permits or licences.
-The inspection visited the establishment and found that residential use was taking place. The Junta has already dismantled this settlement and has opened two sanctioning files for infractions against land use planning, one for advertising and the other for the implementation of unauthorised residential uses.
-The company that owns the campsite has shown its intention to buy back most of the prefabricated houses, compensating the affected foreign population. In addition, 16 of the 29 dwellings have been removed and the rest have requested municipal authorisation to be used as a fixed tourist accommodation facility.
-This complex has a swimming pool, sports courts, gardens, lounge, bar-restaurant and reception. Due to its exclusivity, it was intended as a private club and people with no connection to the resort were not allowed to enter. Photo:SUR. Watch as skiers take to orange snow in Andalucía’s Sierra Nevada:
The calima weather phenomenon carried Saharan sand with it to the south of Spain, this Tuesday morning. That was responsible for that dramatic colour change of the normally pristine snow in the Andalusian ski resort. Many other areas in the south of Spain have been affected by the orange dust, which fell as ‘mud’ in areas where it mixed with rain. Photo:Twitter. Andalusian builders warn of mass redundancies and closures due to the uncontrolled rise in materials prices: {Translation, summary}
-The builders announce stoppages in public works if the administrations do not take immediate measures “in the face of the worsening of the crisis due to the war in Ukraine”.
-According to the employers’ association, the companies can no longer afford this excessive and uncontrollable price increase. “When the tenders were submitted, the economic situation was different, and today we find that the prices on the market are not the same as when the contracts were signed,” stresses Ceacop’s president, Ana Chocano Román, who warns of the paralysis of numerous projects over the next few months.
-Ceacop, the Andalusian construction employers’ association, warns that companies in the public works sector, mostly SMEs, “will be forced to drastic staff reductions and some will even have to close if urgent measures are not taken by the administrations to mitigate the crisis resulting from the extraordinary, unpredictable and sustained rise in the price of materials, fuel and energy costs over time”, an incident, say these companies, which “has worsened exponentially” due to the war in Ukraine. MALAGA

A network dedicated to scamming people for renting properties on the Internet is brought down in Malaga: {Translation} 14Mar22
-The Guardia Civil has carried out the so-called ‘Prevara’ operation, which has led to the dismantling of a criminal group dedicated to carrying out internet scams in the rental of homes and rooms.
-This operation began after becoming aware of several complaints filed in various municipalities in the province of Malaga, in which they stated that after agreeing to rent accommodation or rooms and making a reservation by means of payment through the Bizum application or deposits in bank accounts, the contract was never formalised.
-This criminal group selected their victims from among people who had placed ads on different internet portals dedicated to buying and selling in the real estate sector, publishing their requests to rent flats or rooms.
-After contacting them via instant messaging applications, they tricked their victims by identifying themselves as the owner of a property they were interested in renting or posing as tenants in a property where there were rooms available, agreeing with the victims to contract the rents and requesting an advance payment for the reservation of the flat.
-In addition, this group managed to obtain their victims’ national identity documents, supplanting their marital status to register prepaid telephone lines in their name in order to continue committing crimes by hiding under their identities, the Guardia Civil said in a statement.
The investigation made the appropriate enquiries, which allowed them to know that the alleged perpetrators resided in the town of Cullera (Valencia), and proceeding to the investigation of two people for these incidents.
-The investigated persons, one of them with a long police record for crimes against property, have been charged with the crimes of fraud, usurpation of civil status and falsification of a commercial document. The Return of the “Arkansas Credit Card” (syphon hose)– Wave of petrol thefts from cars in Malaga as prices reach record highs: With petrol more expensive than it has ever been before, it is especially annoying to fill your tank and then find that somebody removes it all from your car. But that is what has been happening recently to people from La Princesa and La Unión districts of Malaga city who park on a piece of waste ground between Calle Agustín Martín Carrión and Avenida de Juan XXIII. They say the petrol caps of at least a dozen cars were forced open last weekend. Locking gas caps are recommended.  Photo:SUR. SPAIN

Omicron variant BA.2 already accounts for up to 75% of new infections in Spain: {Translation}14Mar22 17:08
-The BA.2 lineage of the omicron variant is becoming a major concern for health authorities. The cause of the new wave of infections that is gripping the countries of central Europe, Asia and Australia, known as ‘stealth’ omicron is also spreading rapidly in Spain and now accounts for between 19% and 75% of new infections, depending on the autonomous communities, according to the latest update of the report of variants, made public on Monday by the Centre for Coordination of Alerts and Health Emergencies (CCAES).
-Last week it accounted for between 2% and 49% of cases, which speaks of its speed of transmission, so that “the probability that BA.2 is imposed on the rest of the circulating lineages at this time is considered very high,” according to the technicians of the Ministry of Health.
-The alert for the consequences of the spread of this lineage is spreading throughout the world. BA.2 is more dangerous than the other omicron lineages because it is more contagious than BA.1 and because people who have already had omicron can, in some cases, become re-infected, as the immunity provided by previous infection with BA.1 or other omicron lineages is not complete.
-In principle, BA.2 has similar rates of hospitalisation and severe disease to BA.1, but the fact that it is more contagious may put the most vulnerable population at risk, say health officials in Spain.
-National governments are taking action against this new upsurge in covid-19. In the UK, Boris Johnson’s government has approved a new booster dose for the over-75s to curb the new lineage, as in Australia, where pandemic infection records are now being set. The outbreaks that have led to the closure of cities in China are also partly due to this lineage, which in South Africa has accounted for another spike in infections in recent weeks.
-In Germany, the health ministry warns that the situation is “critical”, while the cumulative incidence in Austria has reached 4,600 cases per 100,000 population, figures not seen at any time during the pandemic. “BA.2 could prolong the omicron wave,” Paul Elliott, an epidemiologist at Imperial College London, warned on Thursday.

-The Government spokesperson and Minister of Territorial Policy, Isabel Rodríguez, has announced that the tax cut will be applied for now only to the price of energy, although the Executive is studying how the economic consequences of inflation and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have affected all sectors.
-In an interview on RNE (Spanish National Radio) reported by Europa Press, Rodríguez said on Monday that the government of Pedro Sánchez is going to analyse whether to apply the tax cut only to the energy sector or whether to extend the measure to “all affected sectors”.
-“What this government does want is for the measures to be adopted at European level”, emphasised the government spokesperson, who praised Sánchez’s role both at European Union level and at national level to “lead the change in regulations”.

WikiLeaks’ Assange denied permission to appeal extradition:
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been denied permission to appeal at Britain’s Supreme Court against a decision to extradite him to the United States, the court said on Monday. While Assange’s extradition must still be approved by the government, Monday’s decision deals a serious blow to Assange’s effort to fight his deportation from Britain in the courts. In Germany the COVID situation is ‘critical,’ Lauterbach says:
-German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said the impact of COVID-19 in the country had reached a “critical” level after the number of infections rose to a record high this week.
-“We are in a situation that I would like to describe as critical,” Lauterbach said at the weekly coronavirus press briefing in Berlin on Friday. “We have strongly rising case figures again. […] I keep reading that the omicron variant is a milder variant but that’s only true to a limited extent.”
-Despite planning to further relax COVID-19 rules, Germany logged a record high number of coronavirus infections in 24 hours on Thursday, and a figure almost as high, 252,836 cases, on Friday.
-“The situation is objectively worse than the public mood,” the health minister said. He said that some people’s belief in Germany, including politicians, that the pandemic was now over, was an “error of judgement.” “We can not be satisfied with a situation in which 250 people are dying every day and the prospect is that in a few weeks more people will die,” he said. EU considers its forecasts obsolete and assumes that “it is impossible to know the impact of the Russian invasion on Ukraine”: The European Union knows that its economic growth forecasts for 2022 are no longer valid. But they also assume that “it is impossible to know the impact of the Russian invasion on Ukraine.” This was expressed by the Commissioner for the Economy, Paolo Gentiloni, at the exit of the Eurogroup, this Monday in Brussels.
Isn’t that reassuring? Photo:elDiario.es

“I don’t feel that I have earned that right”- Dolly Parton withdraws from Rock & Roll Hall of Fame consideration:
-The “9 to 5” singer announced via social media that she has removed her name from the voting ballot as she doesn’t feel like she’s earned the right to be considered for induction.
-“Dolly here! Even though I am extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I don’t feel that I have earned that right. I really do not want votes to be split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out,” she wrote. “I do hope that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will understand and be willing to consider me again – if I’m ever worthy.”
-The 76-year-old added that her nomination has inspired her to venture into the rock genre, something her husband Carl Dean has urged her to do.
-“This has, however, inspired me to put out a hopefully great rock ‘n’ roll album at some point in the future, which I have always wanted to do! My husband is a total rock ‘n’ roll freak, and has always encouraged me to do one. I wish all of the nominees good luck and thank you again for the compliment. Rock on!” the country music icon concluded.
-This year’s nominees also include Eminem, Beck, Carly Simon, Kate Bush, Duran Duran, A Tribe Called Quest, and Lionel Richie, among others. The class of 2022 inductees will be revealed in May.

China COVID lockdowns halt Apple, Toyota and VW production, may boost inflation: New coronavirus lockdowns in China are snarling production for everything from Apple iPhones to Toyota SUVs — and threatening to make already red-hot global inflation even worse. Key Apple suppliers including Foxconn have been forced to shut down factories in Shenzhen, where iPhones, iPads and Mac computers are produced, after the regional government placed the city into lockdown on Sunday. A ban on non-essential work in Shenzhen — which is known as China’s Silicon Valley and is home to major tech firms like Tencent and Huawei — is set to last for at least one week. American astronaut will return to Earth on Russian spacecraft despite Ukraine invasion, NASA says:
-Geopolitical tensions won’t keep an American astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts from returning to Earth together as planned this month.
-NASA’s Mark Vande Hei and cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anton Shkaplerov have long been scheduled to come home from the International Space Station aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft on March 30. And that remains the plan, despite the strain that Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine has placed on Russia’s many space partnerships.
-“I can tell you for sure: Mark is coming home on that Soyuz,” Joel Montalbano, the manager of NASA’s International Space Station program, said during a news conference today (March 14). “We are in communication with our Russian colleagues; there’s no fuzz on that.” Photo:FANDOM. MALAGA

Oak acorn milk coming to Malaga: {Translation, summary}
Brothers Javier and Pedro San Martín have embarked on the project of launching the first milk produced from acorns. A project they have been working on for several years and for which they have carried out numerous tests before arriving at the formula for what will be the first acorn milk on the market, with Malaga as its main target after its launch. The promoters hope that this will take place before the arrival of summer, when there is usually an increase in demand for this type of product.
Gastronomist and forestry engineers, they decided years ago to try to give a new use to acorns, a food that in the past was representative of power and families even included acorns as part of the dowry, and now, on the other hand, there are areas where it has no use whatsoever. However, both say that it is an activity that is totally compatible with livestock farming. “We only harvest the oaks that produce more than 25 kilos because it is not profitable to harvest smaller ones; the rest, the vast majority, are left in the forest for the livestock”, explains Javier. EUROPE

Shockwaves Spread as Europe’s Economy Reels at Energy Fallout:
-A crisis of human suffering in Ukraine, whose wider economic impact prompted European Central Bank officials to quicken their withdrawal from stimulus this week, is affecting prosperity from the farmlands of Spain to the euro zone’s manufacturing core in Germany and France.
-“I don’t know what to do if the war in Ukraine continues for much longer,” Spanish pig farmer Lorenzo Rivera said in an interview this week. “I either have to halt production – or close business for good.”
-Rivera, whose 200 sows outnumber people in Peleas de Arriba, the settlement in northern Spain where he lives, has endured cost increases for a while – first electricity, then fuel, and then animal feed. It was all manageable until war broke out on the other side of the continent. The root of the difficulty is the European Union’s reliance on Ukraine for over half its supply of corn, a key source of feed for pigs. With farmers unable to access fields, analysts are slashing outlooks for crops and exports there by as much as a third, sending prices to the highest in about a decade.
-The political impact of the cost-of-living squeeze is ultimately likely to test the continent’s resolve to keep confronting Russia at a time when its president, Vladimir Putin, is threatening to shut off gas supplies amounting to about a third of EU consumption. Full article:

Italian minister describes the price of gasoline and fuel as a “colossal scam without justification”: “We are witnessing a unjustified fuel price increase, there is no technical reason for these increases. The increase has no correlation with the reality of the facts, it is a speculative spiral, in which few win”; it is “a colossal scam at the expense of companies and citizens.”
-The statements to Sky Tg24 by Cingolani, a technical minister of great weight in the government of Mario Draghi, take place on the eve of the national strike that truck drivers begin this Monday, in order to show “the situation of extreme need in the sector”. To deactivate the “colossal scam”, the minister considers that a European front must be established to specify the gas prices and set a maximum price.
-The Italian Prime Minister also explained why the electricity bill is through the roof: “We must separate the market for electricity produced from renewable sources from the gas market. Today there is only one price, so even electricity produced at very low cost – such as that produced by energy from many renewable sources – reaches the consumer at a price equal to that produced with gas. This is the main cause of the increase in bills,” explained Draghi. Too soon? Covid cases on the rise as France prepares to lift restrictions: The latest upturn in infections is cause for concern as France prepares to lift most Covid-19 restrictions on Monday, with some health workers lamenting a premature move dictated by political imperatives ahead of the country’s presidential election.
-France is not alone in registering an uptick in cases, with Germany, Britain and the Netherlands reporting similar trends. However, like its European peers, the French government is determined to stick to its timetable to lift restrictions.
-“France’s health minister had said the move would be conditional on a number of health indicators. But it seems that sticking to the timetable is now the priority,” said the Swiss-based epidemiologist Antoine Flahaut, referring to Health Minister Olivier Véran’s claim that restrictions would only be lifted if the incidence rate – the number of new cases per 100,000 people – stayed below 500 (it is now at 546). The government is also short of its target of bringing the number of patients in ICU below 1,500. The number has only recently slipped below the 2,000-mark, its lowest level since early December. Tennis News- Naomi Osaka brought to tears by heckler, crashes out of Indian Wells: Naomi Osaka’s match at Indian Wells took an ugly turn when a heckler made an appearance on Saturday. “Naomi, you suck!” a woman from the audience shouted during Osaka’s first-set against Veronika Kudermetova. The insult was met with jeers from fellow spectators and appeared to rattle the four-time Grand Slam champion.
The 24-year-old dropped the first set 6-0 to Kudermetova. She’d lose the next set 6-4, ending her run in the Round of 64 at the California-based tournament. Photo:Robert Prange. Full article: https://nypost.com/2022/03/13/naomi-osaka-brought-to-tears-by-heckler-at-indian-wells/

China faces consequences if it helps Russia evade sanctions over Ukraine, White House adviser says: U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, who is due to meet with China’s top diplomat Yang Jiechi in Rome on Monday, warned Beijing that it would “absolutely” face consequences if it helped Moscow evade sweeping sanctions over the war in Ukraine.
-Hu Xijin, former editor-in-chief of the state-backed Chinese Global Times newspaper, said on Twitter: “If Sullivan thinks he can persuade China to participate in sanctions against Russia, he will be disappointed.” (China has already helped Russia mitigate sanction problems; in recent weeks they have supplied Russia with an alternative to the SWIFT banking system, as well as an alternative credit-card system. It certainly appears China has already chosen which side of this conflict it will support. -Ed.) MOONETTE – Organic Skincare for Mature Skin
We are a Torrox-based company specialising in the creation of formulae which help prevent premature skin ageing. We are committed to making effective products at affordable prices.
Your skin health matters to us. How you feed your skin is as important as how you feed your body. Why settle for anything less than natural and organic?
As our skin is the first layer of our defence against microbial infections, ultraviolet radiation and environmental contamination it plays a vital role in our health. As we grow older, however, our skin becomes thinner, wrinkled, and more sensitive; hence it requires the use of treatments containing specific ingredients to the care of treating mature skin.
Recognising this need we have created a range of formulae which help
-slow down ageing process by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
-improve facial complexion and eliminate blemishes.
At Moonette, we are passionate about health, beauty and plants. Your skin will benefit from the properties of botanic essential oils combined with a selection of nutrients for deep hydration, cell revitalization and antioxidant effect, all sourced from the finest natural ingredients with gorgeous fragrances.

The Junta reduces agricultural irrigation in La Axarquía to 1,500 cubic metres per hectare per year: {Translation, summary}
-The Drought Management Commission has approved the declaration of a situation of exceptional drought in the exploitation systems of Benínar (Almería), Guadalhorce-Limonero (Málaga) and Costa del Sol Occidental (Málaga). This is in addition to the declaration of exceptional drought situation established in the territorial units with surface regulation of Campo de Gibraltar (Cádiz), Viñuela (Costa del Sol Oriental de Málaga) and Cuevas de Almanzora (Almería) last June 2021. This decree also declared the same exceptional drought situation in the territorial units of El Condado (Huelva) and Sistema Barbate (Cádiz).
-The scant rainfall in the Andalusian community during the current hydrological year means that the Western Costa del Sol, with rainfall of only 21.54% of the historical average for this area, has a volume of water in reservoirs that represents 37.74% of the total capacity of the system.
-In the Viñuela system, the activation of water saving plans has been approved with the objective of achieving at least a 20% reduction in urban supply, limiting the allocation to 200 litres per inhabitant per day. It has also been agreed to reduce the amount of regulated water for irrigation to 1,500 cubic metres per hectare per year.
-The Committee of Management of the Drought have adopted a series of measures common to all systems declared in a situation of exceptional drought, as set forth in the decree of June 2021.
-Among other measures, the prohibition of the use of water resources fit for human consumption for the following uses: street cleaning, filling of swimming pools, watering gardens, public parks and private, golf courses, car wash outside of approved establishments, ornamental fountains that do not have a closed-circuit water, showers, and suppliers to the public. Can Unvaccinated Travellers Enter Spain?: Even though Spain has relaxed some of its COVID-19 restrictions, the country still continues to keep in place entry rules based on travellers’ country of origin.
According to Spain’s official travel website, travellers from European Union/Schengen Area and those from safe third countries are subject to less stringent rules when reaching Spain. On the other hand, travellers from the rest of the countries need to follow more strict measures.
The Spanish authorities explain that travellers from the EU/Schengen Area countries that are part of the risk list are permitted entry by presenting one of the certificates that is part of the EU Digital COVID Pass – a vaccination, recovery, or test certificate.
Such a statement suggests that even unvaccinated EU/Schengen Area travellers can enter Spain as long as they present a recovery Certificate or a negative COVID-19 test result. Spain accepts recovery certificates provided that the document proves that the holder has recovered from the virus in the last 180 days. Full article:

UNCONFIRMED- Platform for the Defense of the National and International Road Freight Transport Sector announced an indefinite national transport strike beginning at midnight on Monday, March 14:
-While no other transport unions have yet announced plans to join Monday´s strike, the Association of International Road Transport (Astic) has warned of the “economic disaster and shortages” that Spain faces if the Government does not “immediately” adopt measures to alleviate the effects that high fuel prices are causing in the sector.
-The last time a national freight strike took place over fuel costs in June 2008, large queues accumulated at petrol stations, while prices rose even further. The strike also prompted food shortages in Spain.
-Fuel prices have been rising across Europe since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, with the price of diesel rising by 20.2 per cent in just two weeks. Full article that fails to provide supporting evidence:

HEALTH

63% of Spaniards fail to fall asleep quickly at bedtime: {Translation}
– According to a perception survey conducted by Laboratorios Diafarma on a sample of 502 people, 63 percent of Spaniards are unable to fall asleep quickly at bedtime, either regularly or occasionally.
-Furthermore, according to this study, 39 percent of Spaniards claim to sleep badly at night. Of these, 26 percent say that the main reason they sleep badly is because they wake up once or several times during the night, followed by difficulty in falling asleep (18%), waking up before the hour and not going back to sleep (16%), or sleeping too lightly (14%), among others.
-According to the report, the factors that most “keep Spaniards awake” are work or financial problems (45%), followed by family or partner problems (37%) and, lastly, health problems (30%).
-The conclusions of the survey reveal that 33 per cent of Spaniards usually wake up once a night, almost the same percentage as those who usually wake up twice (32 per cent). Likewise, 19 percent report waking up three or more times. Those who do not usually wake up at night represent only 16 per cent of respondents.
-On the other hand, among the factors that stand out in the night-time habits of Spaniards, firstly, it is worth noting that more than half of the population (54%) say that they always go to bed at approximately the same time. The second most marked aspect of their night-time routine is the use of electronic devices, such as television, before going to bed (48%) and, in third place, eating little dinner and light meals (46%).
-In addition, 30 per cent of respondents report a habit of reading a little before bed and 29 per cent have a hot drink before going to bed to help them sleep.
-With regard to the impact of sleep on daily activity, there is unanimity among those surveyed, with 95 percent of Spaniards agreeing that a good night’s rest has an impact on their daily activity. “For this reason, it is essential to have a daily restful sleep that is of good quality and has an appropriate duration that guarantees the physical and emotional rest of the person,” the laboratory points out.
-Thus, the three keys for Spaniards to sleep well are, in this order: having a good habit in relation to bedtime (67%), relaxing before going to sleep, meditating or listening to relaxing music (55%) and not using electronic devices such as mobile phones or television in the bedroom (40.8%).
-Finally, according to the survey results, Spaniards prefer to sleep in company (41%) rather than alone (26%). However, the remaining 33% are indifferent to this aspect. WhatsApp Source Code For Their Computer App So Weak They Want You Install A Special Tool So You Can Regularly Check If It Has Been Hacked:
-This applies to computers, not mobiles or tablets.
-Meta Platforms’ WhatsApp and Cloudflare have banded together for a new initiative called Code Verify to validate the authenticity of the messaging service’s web app on desktop computers.
-Available in the form of a Chrome and Edge browser extension, the open-source add-on is designed to “automatically verif[y] the authenticity of the WhatsApp Web code being served to your browser,” Facebook said in a statement.
-The goal with Code Verify is to confirm the integrity of the web application and ensure that it hasn’t been tampered with to inject malicious code. The social media company is also planning to release a Firefox plugin to achieve the same level of security across browsers.
-Code Verify is also meant to be flexible in that whenever the code for WhatsApp Web is updated, the cryptographic hash value will be updated automatically in tandem, so that the code served to users is certified on the fly. Spain- 120 companies less each day in January: Companies have not yet managed to recover from the crisis caused by the pandemic and are already suffering the effects of the war in Ukraine. More than 3,700 companies have had to close their doors in the month of January, almost 120 on average each day. This is the highest number of dissolutions in three years (since January 2019), and that has not yet reflected the impact that the Russian invasion will undoubtedly have, which is already causing strikes in many industries as a result of the sharp increase in the price of energy.

Prices in Spain soar 7.6% in February and mark the highest inflation since December 1986:
-Inflation in Spain is out of control after months of increases and is now under pressure from the energy crisis derived from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.8% compared to the previous month, to 7.6%, to mark its highest rate since December 1986. The rate confirmed today, Friday, was revised upwards in two tenths with respect to the figure advanced 15 days ago by the National Institute of Statistics.
-This scenario translates into a double bill for the consumer, who has no choice but to assume the high cost of energy and, at the same time, the increase in prices that is transferred to other goods, food and services- Electricity (80.5%), liquefied hydrocarbons such as butane or propane (33.4%), diesel (28.4%) and gasoline (25.1%), but also some foods that make up the shopping basket, such as edible oils (32.3%). Delta-Omicron hybrid identified for first time:
-A newly-discovered Covid variant that combines mutations from both Omicron and Delta is “the real thing,” scientists have said.
-Earlier in the year, concern was raised after a lab in Cyprus claimed to have found evidence of a Delta-Omicron recombination event – when the two variants co-infect a patient and exchange genetic material to produce a new viral offspring – but experts said the findings were false.
-Now, however, virologists from L’Institut Pasteur in Paris have sequenced the genome of a genuine “Deltacron” variant, which has been detected in several regions of France and appears to have been circulating since early January.
-“This one is legit,” said Aris Katzourakis, a professor of evolution and genomics at the University of Oxford. “[It is] one to keep an eye on.”
-At least 41 patients have been identified with Detlacron in the US and Europe since the variant first flagged in January. Health chiefs told The Sun that a “very small” number of cases have been detected in the UK, with more details set to be reported in a briefing on Friday (https://www.thesun.co.uk/health/17906718/delta-omicron-covid-hybrid-uk-waning-immunity/).
-Viral genomes with a similar profile to the Deltacron variant in France have also been discovered in Denmark and the Netherlands, but it has yet to be established if these recombinants derive from the same ancestor. Covid Andalucia- Andalusia registers 2,821 cases and its rate rises three points to 265.6: {Translation, 1st 5 paragraphs} 10/03/2022 13:20
-On Thursday 10 March, Andalusia recorded a total of 2,821 positive results for Covid-19 in 24 hours, 172 more than the previous day, while 16 people died, seven fewer than on Wednesday and a very similar figure to that of a week ago (17).
-According to data consulted by Europa Press at the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia (IECA), the rate in the region stands at 265.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, 3.1 points more than on Wednesday.
-The 2,821 infections are registered after 2,649 on Wednesday, 1,512 on Tuesday, 5,278 on Monday (72 hours), 2,809 on Friday and 2,457 on Thursday. By provinces, Malaga is the one with the most infections with 778, followed by Cadiz with 449, Seville with 413, Almeria with 275, Cordoba with 265, Granada with 235, Jaen with 212 and Huelva with 194. Regarding the 16 deaths, four are registered in the province of Almeria, three in Cadiz and three in Malaga, two in Cordoba and one each in Seville, Jaen, Granada and Huelva.
-Andalusia has recorded this Thursday a drop of 30 patients hospitalised for coronavirus compared to Wednesday to a total of 642, while ICU admissions fell by two to 86 people.
-By provinces, Malaga is the one with more hospitalised patients with 164 and 17 in ICU, followed by Seville with 123 and 20 in ICU, Cadiz with 89 and eight in ICU, Granada with 82 hospitalised and nine in ICU, Jaen with 64 hospitalised and eight in ICU, Cordoba with 63 hospitalised and 16 in ICU, Almeria with 35 hospitalised and six in ICU and Huelva with 22 hospitalised and two in ICU. SPAIN

Prices have shot up in Spain following the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the province’s economy is already affected:
-Sergio Cuberos, the president of the Malaga Chamber of Commerce, says the situation is truly alarming. “The increase in fuel and energy prices is going to cause an existential crisis for many businesses,” he says.
-The president of the Mahos hospitality association in Malaga, Javier Frutos, says hopes have been dashed of 2022 being the year of recovery. “Prices had already started going up and that was a problem, but now there is starting to be a shortage of basic products like sunflower oil, which is used for frying. The price of electricity breaks records every day, and things are difficult,” he says.
-The president of Dcoop, Antonio Luque, says prices will continue to rise even if the war ends soon, and that countries need to go back to being self-sufficient. “If we can’t even make a profit even when we sell at high prices because production costs have risen so much, well, then we have a problem,” he says.

Spain to stop counting Covid infections except for serious cases: Spain’s Health Ministry on Thursday announced it will stop keeping count of all Covid-19 infections in the country, with the exception of serious cases and those affecting vulnerable people. Spain’s far right Vox party enters regional government for first time:
Spain’s Vox party on Thursday entered a regional government as part of a coalition agreement with the right-wing Popular Party (PP, a conservative and Christian-democratic political party according to Wikipedia), the first time in Spain’s democratic history that the far right will govern in a region.
-The country’s highly decentralised system gives Spain’s 17 regions broad powers, meaning Vox’s entry into the regional government of Castilla y León, just north of Madrid, will give it a major impact on policy. Vox leader in the region Juan García-Gallardo will be Castilla y León vice-president, the parties have agreed.
-The regional governments of both Andalusia and the Madrid area are also PP-led, but for now are supported from the outside, rather than power-sharing, by Vox, in exchange for political concessions. (Why is this important? If Andalucia follows this trend, we could see Vox have a greater impact on Andalucian policy after the next election, with a swing to the conservative/right.  -Ed.) MALAGA

Fuel prices reach record highs because of the war in Ukraine:
-Prices have already risen by about 25 céntimos per litre in Malaga province since the Russian invasion and it is expected to become even more expensive. In just one month it now costs around 12.50 euros more to fill a 50-litre tank
-This is the first time ever that fuel has risen to nearly two euros per litre, a psychological barrier which the sector says is almost certain to be broken through very soon.
-There are differences, depending on where you are: on Wednesday a filling station in Antequera was selling diesel at 1.99 euros per litre, while the cheapest was in Marbella, at 1.499.
-The most expensive 95-octane petrol was in Pizarra (1.916) and Marbella (1.914), while the cheapest could be found in Mollina and Marbella, at 1.596.
-Malaga city has its own idiosyncracies when it comes to fuel, because there is little competition from low-cost companies. The cheapest diesel was at Petroprix, at 1.659, and the most expensive was Galp, where it cost 1.919.
-Petrol in Malaga was cheapest at Petroprix (1.759) and most expensive at Repsol, Shell and Cepsa, at 1.889. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/fuel-prices-malaga-20220310101027-nt.html

World’s Best Fabada 2022: The Mediterráneo restaurant in Benajarafe (Velez-Malaga) was selected as one of 17 semi-finalists in the “World’s Best Fabada 2022” competition in Madrid.
Fabada (Asturian bean stew) is a traditional Asturian dish that is popular throughout Spain. José Luis Navas, manager of the Mediterráneo restaurant, explained that their dish stands out for “the products we use to make the fabada, which come from Asturias”.
The manager went on to say that this is the first year that they have entered the competition. They usually serve fabada on Fridays, and one day, “without prior warning, two members of the jury came to taste it”, notifying them shortly afterwards that they had been selected to take part in the semi-final. Tennis News- Novak Djokovic out of two events due to U.S. COVID-19 travel restrictions: Novak Djokovic withdrew Wednesday from the BNP Paribas Open on the eve of the event, saying he cannot travel to the United States because he is not vaccinated against COVID-19.
Djokovic, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, cited regulations by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the reason for his inability to play. The U.S. has been requiring foreign visitors to be vaccinated to enter the country.
Djokovic also will miss the Miami Open, which gets underway later this month. Both tournaments are Masters 1000-level events.
“While I was automatically listed in the [BNP Paribas Open] and [the Miami Open], I knew it would be unlikely I’d be able to travel,” Djokovic said in a tweet Wednesday. “The CDC has confirmed that regulations won’t be changing so I won’t be able to play in the US.”

DuckDuckGo Search Engine Adopts Censorship- Will ‘Down-Rank’ What It Decides Is ‘Disinformation’: Popular privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo, commonly considered an alternative to Google, has announced that it will be “down-ranking” sites associated with “disinformation,” along with adding “information boxes” to “highlight quality information”, a popular tactic applied by Google for years to reduce user access to content it considers objectionable. The rise in electricity prices causes an “unprecedented industrial emergency”: In recent days, companies have suffered an escalation in electricity prices never seen before, reaching an average price of €547/MWh last Tuesday.
Many industries have been forced to stop production, as these electricity prices make it impossible to maintain activity. Companies such as Acerinox, ArcelorMittal, G. Celsa, Megasa, Ferroglobe and Siderúrgica Balboa have already had to stop some of their facilities and, if this trend continues, they will be forced to launch temporary employment regulation files (ERTE) and possible production relocations. The latest notice from Seguridad Social (Social Security) to pensioners: {Translation}
-The Social Security has sent a letter to pensioners, according to El Ideal. The letter informs them of the revaluation of pensions in 2022, of which contributory pensions have risen by 2.5% and non-contributory pensions by 3%.
-To this must be added the compensatory payment, better known as ‘paguilla’, which has been allocated to pensioners so that they do not lose purchasing power due to the inflation of the previous year.
-The letter also informs pensioners of the status of their benefits. Important data such as the gross and net amount and the withholdings made in the IRPF (personal income tax) are included.
-The important notice has to do with the confirmation of the same data, or rather, with the deadline for submitting possible claims to the Social Security.
-A total of 30 working days from receipt of the letter are given to report possible errors to the provincial Social Security office.
-It is therefore important to keep the letter, as it contains the electronic reference. However, this information can also be obtained from the social security office. Source, Spanish: https://www.abc.es/economia/abci-ultimo-aviso-dado-seguridad-social-pensionistas-nsv-202203091115_noticia.html

Sánchez blames Putin for inflation and the PP accuses Sánchez of using the war and the pandemic as excuses: Pedro Sánchez sees a single culprit in inflation and the rise in energy prices that have skyrocketed in recent months. “Inflation and energy prices are the sole responsibility of Putin and his illegal war in Ukraine,” he has told Congress. The PP has accused Sánchez of being “the president of a thousand alibis” and has accused him of having used the pandemic for his benefit and now doing the same with the war that started only 2 weeks ago.

Costa del Sol teetering on the brink of a drought emergency:
Unless the heavens open and there is heavy rain in the next few days, the declaration of drought emergency that has applied to La Axarquía for months will be extended to the western Costa del Sol, while Malaga city, where the lack of water is less serious, will pass from a state of pre-alert to alert. This will be decided by the regional government’s Drought Management Committee on Friday.
The meeting will also consider whether to reduce supplies for irrigation in La Axarquía still further; they were cut by 33 per cent in October. Photo:JOSELE. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/costa-edge-drought-20220309110028-nt.html

Russia threatens to cut off natural gas flow via key pipeline over sanctions: Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak has said Moscow could cut off the flow of natural gas through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which links the country to Germany, in retaliation for sanctions imposed on its economy over the invasion of Ukraine. This latest threat comes as the United States is considering banning purchases of Russian oil. Novak warned that such a move could push prices as high as $300 a barrel. In early trading on Tuesday, the international benchmark Brent crude was trading at around $125. Patient dies two months after groundbreaking pig heart transplant:
-David Bennett, the first human to successfully undergo a heart transplant involving a genetically modified pig heart, has died, according to The New York Times. He was 57. It’s unclear if his body rejected the organ doctors implanted in January.
-When Bennett’s transplant was first announced, doctors treated the news with cautious optimism. And for a time, it looked like that feeling was warranted. Not only did Bennett’s body not immediately reject the organ, but he was also able to take part in physical therapy and spend time with his family. And while he was never discharged from the hospital, he did survive two months with the genetically modified organ beating in place of his human heart. Shackleton’s ship “Endurance” found beneath Antarctic ice, 100 years on: The wreckage of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton’s ship “Endurance”, which was crushed by Antarctic ice and sank some 10,000 feet (3,000 m) to the ocean floor more than a century ago, has been found, a team searching for it said on Wednesday. The three-masted sailing ship was lost in November 1915 during Shackleton’s failed attempt to make the first land crossing of Antarctica. “We are overwhelmed by our good fortune…,” said Mensun Bound, the expedition’s Director of Exploration. “This is by far the finest wooden shipwreck I have ever seen. It is upright, well proud of the seabed, intact, and in a brilliant state of preservation.”

The price of gasoline reaches two euros per liter in several Spanish service stations: {Translation}
Fuel prices continue to rise week after week, reaching historic highs. On Tuesday, the price of a litre of petrol reached two euros at several service stations in Spain, something never seen before.
Some experts point to the conflict with Ukraine or the low level of supply as the cause of the rise, but the truth is that Spain is the European Union country where it has increased the most in 2021, by 22% compared to January, according to a study by the National Association of Automatic Service Stations (Aesae) with data from the Geoportal of the Ministry for Ecological Transition. Source, Spanish: https://www.abc.es/economia/abci-precio-gasolina-alcanza-euros-litro-varias-estaciones-servicio-espanolas-202203081634_noticia.html

Vice President Ribera assures that the electricity market is “broken” and that “it does not reflect the real costs”: The third vice president and minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, assured this Tuesday that the Government advocates intervening in the regulation of the wholesale electricity market, which she considers “is broken” because “it does not reflect the real costs” Thus, Ribera He explained that there is a “very important distortion” due to the “very high prices of natural gas.”
In the press conference after the Council of Ministers, Ribera stressed that the intervention in the regulation of the wholesale market is something that should have the endorsement of the European Union, which is the one that sets the fundamental rules. Why Mercadona and other supermarkets have limited the purchase of sunflower oil: The Spanish Association of Distributors, Self-Services and Supermarkets (Asedas) has reported that some food distribution companies are limiting the sale of sunflower oil. In the last week, shops have detected an unusual increase in customers who buy large quantities of this product, whose main supplier of seeds is Ukraine, fearing that the Russian invasion will paralyze its production.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has had an impact on Spain in the economic field and in the consumer’s pocket. Not only have electricity and petroleum prices skyrocketed, but also the prices of some foods, such as bread, meat, beer and, of course, sunflower oil. Another Nolotil warning as elderly man from Sotogrande rushed to hospital: Despite the fact that Spain’s healthcare regulator the Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS) warned about the dangers of pain killer Nolotil (metamizole) to those from northern Europe, especially the UK and Ireland, in 2018, it is still being prescribed.
-Just a week ago, an elderly British born man living in Sotogrande had to be rushed to the hospital in La Linea de la Frontera suffering from what turned out to be internal bleeding thought to have been caused by Nolotil.
-One of the major side effects of this drug is known to be agranulocytosis which causes the bone marrow to not produce enough white blood cells, and can result in fatal blood poisoning and those most at risk were identified as the elderly and those with suppressed immune systems.
-It is important to note that Nolotil is not licenced in the UK or Ireland. Source: https://euroweeklynews.com/2022/03/08/another-nolotil-warning-as-elderly-man-from-sotogrande-rushed-to-hospital/

Gibraltar will not require Covid tests or passenger locator forms from travellers from 18 March: People arriving in Gibraltar by air and sea will no longer have to take a Covid-19 test from Friday 18 March, and from the same date passengers landing at the airport will no longer have to submit a passenger locator form.
This is part of the government’s Exit Strategy plan, announced last week, whereby existing restrictions will gradually be phased out.
However, the Gibraltar police are stressing that until 18 March, people must continue to have a Covid-19 test on arrival at the airport and passenger locator forms do still have to be completed.

Tennis News- Andújar, Verdasco and Vesely to play the ATP Challenger 125 in Marbella: {Translation}
-The AnyTech365 Andalucía Open 2022 already has an initial list of players who will compete in the ATP Challenger 125 during the week of 28 March to 3 April at the Puente Romano Beach Resort in Marbella, including 10 players in the world’s Top 100.
-Slovakian Alex Molcan, ranked 67th in the ATP rankings, is the highest ranked of the entries, followed by 2019 champion Pablo Andújar, currently ranked 69th. TECH

Facebook Blocks VPN Users from Viewing Public FB Pages: {By Editor}
Fakebook claims your pages will be available for the public to view as long as your page settings are set to public, even persons without a FB account are supposed to be able to see them. This is NOT TRUE for non-FB account holders that use a VPN. VPN users are blocked from viewing public FB pages unless they sign into FB. That is because when you view a FB page, even as a non-FB user, FB sets cookies in your browser to collect data on all the sites you visit and searches you do. FB demands your data, even if you are not a FB account holder. I have tested this many times to confirm it.
If you are a business owner, and use FB for promotions, your public exposure is limited by this practice as many people now use VPNs to protect themselves online from identity theft, scams and ads.
I can’t find info on this practice anywhere in the mess that FB calls support. They have taken away benefits from you, that you may have paid for, without properly informing you that you are now getting less for your advertising payments than you used to get.
Another deceptive Fakebook practice. You can see a discussion of this here, https://www.reddit.com/r/facebook/comments/ivmt5j/comment/hulbul3/

In Response To Sanctions, Putin May Decriminalize On-line & Software Piracy: (If Russia does this, it will cost big tech, the entertainment industry & media companies many billions of dollars, as then the entire world will have free access to premium content on IPTV & torrents, new movies before they reach local theaters, every publication, and pirated software via Russian portals. It will be hard to charge hundreds of dollars for MS Office Suite or Photoshop if they can be had for free from Russian websites. -Ed.) Putin appears to be digging in for the long haul and is seemingly intent on demonstrating that sanctions can be mitigated in dozens of ways, even if that means changing local law.
Quite how this could deal with services accessed via the cloud is unclear but the overall aim is to smooth Russia’s transition from reliance on foreign companies’ products to solutions developed inside the country. (Russia has had it’s own, alternative Internet since 2018, including it’s own version of Wikipedia. So does China. -Ed. https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-50902496) Given the scale of that undertaking, software piracy is likely to become the norm for years to come. Reference: https://torrentfreak.com/russia-will-probably-legalize-some-software-piracy-to-mitigate-sanctions-220307/ (If you are interested in the chaos that Russia could instigate with the Internet we use, once they switch over to their own internet exclusively, this is a good article on the topic without too much jargon. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2018/07/russia-dns-alternative-internet-could-yield-cyberattack.html)

The wholesale price of electricity sets another record and reaches 544.98 euros/MWh: The average price of the wholesale market of the electricity market is going to chain its second consecutive historical record this Tuesday, shooting up by more than 100 euros in a single day, up to 544.98 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), on a Monday of shock in the energy markets due to the war in Ukraine.
-Until now, the pool had never traded above 500 euros, after having exceeded the level of 400 euros for the first time in history on Monday. This Tuesday, at all hours it will be above that figure, with a peak of 700 euros per MWh at 8:00 p.m. Some stratospheric figures, light years away from those of a normal year, in which the pool used to be listed around 40 or 50 euros. The vector of this new record is, once again, natural gas and the price formation system in force in the EU, whose rules Spain has been asking Brussels to change for months. Rent Bubble? Evictions soar 57% in 2021, to the highest figure in five years: The number of foreclosures on habitual residences stood at 11,947 in 2021, a figure that is the highest since 2016 and represents an increase of 57.4% compared to 2020, its largest annual rise since the beginning of the series, in 2014 , according to the statistics of foreclosures published this Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). New minimal tax value for Spanish properties: On the first of January 2022 Spain introduced a new minimal tax value, which is the ´Cadastral Reference Value´ or in Spanish ´Valor de Referencia´. This is important news because the new system results in values that are in general higher and much closer to the real market value than before. The Cadastral Reference Value needs to be taken into account for tax purposes in many different kinds of property transactions -like purchases, inheritances and gifts. (I have no connection to the firm that posted this article on their website. It just seemed like a well written article on the topic. -Ed.) MALAGA

Want to go fight in Ukraine? Here’s how to apply in Malaga:
Ukraine launched a website Saturday where foreigners can apply directly if they want to volunteer to go to Ukraine and fight against Russian invaders. Visa requirements have been lifted. You need to bring your own combat gear. Experience preferred but not required.
In many ways, Ukraine’s International Legion harkens back to the International Brigades, the storied volunteer formations fighting for the Republican Government during the Spanish Civil War in 1936-1938, the Kyiv Independent reported Saturday.
The legion will become part of the country’s Territorial Defense Force, a newly established branch of the Armed Forces. The legion will start with two newly formed battalions.

EUROPE

Wheat and Sunflower Seed Oil Shortages- Ukraine halts export of key foodstuffs as concerns mount over EU food security: Ukraine alone accounts for 19% of EU wheat imports and 13% of oilseed imports. Together with Russia, the two agricultural powerhouses provide over a third of the world’s wheat and barley, as well as 17% corn and over 50% of sunflower oil and seeds.
-Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has therefore sent shockwaves through two of the world’s staple grain markets, with wheat prices skyrocketing last week to their highest level in 14 years. Some places, such as Albania, have already warned that this could see bread and other grain-based staple goods off the menu.
-The EU’s vegetable oil association (FEDIOL) warned on Friday that the roughly 200,000 tonnes per month supply of sunflower seed oil from Ukraine has stopped being shipped to European ports.
-Between 35 and 45% of sunflower oil refined in the EU comes from Ukraine and there is no immediate solution to the disruption in sunflower seed oil, as it is unclear if and how trade will be able to resume, continued the association. Russia will stop ‘in a moment’ if Ukraine meets terms – Kremlin:
Russia has told Ukraine it is ready to halt military operations “in a moment” if Kyiv meets a list of conditions, the Kremlin spokesman said on Monday.
Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was demanding that Ukraine cease military action, change its constitution to enshrine neutrality, acknowledge Crimea as Russian territory, and recognise the separatist republics of Donetsk and Lugansk as independent states.
It was the most explicit Russian statement so far of the terms it wants to impose on Ukraine to halt what it calls its “special military operation”, now in its 12th day.
There was no immediate reaction from the Ukrainian side. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/kremlin-says-russian-military-action-will-stop-moment-if-ukraine-meets-2022-03-07/
