The wholesale price of electricity smashes its record, due to the rise in gas prices, to 442.54 euros/MWh: Less than two weeks after the start of the war in Ukraine, the price of the wholesale electricity market in Spain is going to pulverize an all-time high this Monday, standing, on average, at 442.54 euros per megawatt (MWh). The so-called pool is already well above the previous record of 383 euros recorded on the eve of last Christmas.
-This new record comes on the first business day after last Friday the European gas benchmark, the TTF, broke the 200-euro barrier for the first time and exceeded 210 euros per MWh, after taking control by the Russian army of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Ukrainian Energodar plant, in the Zaporizhia region.
-By hourly sections, this Monday the historical maximum of 500 euros/MWh will be reached for the first time. It will happen from 8 to 10 in the morning and at 8 pm. Sánchez affirms that “very soon” indoor masks will no longer be mandatory: {Translation} 06/03/2022, 11:27
-The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has insisted this Sunday that the use of masks indoors to prevent contagion of the coronavirus will cease to be compulsory “soon, very soon”, when the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, so determines.
-He said this before the PSOE’s Federal Committee, which met in an extraordinary meeting to analyse the war in Ukraine, and after noting the “formidable response” that citizens have given to the pandemic, with an “extraordinarily high” number of people vaccinated and the “lowest” cumulative incidence in the whole of the European Union.
-The head of the Spanish government has therefore stressed that “soon, very soon, when the Minister of Health tells us, we are going to remove the obligation to wear masks indoors”.

First examination in Congress of the new Housing Law, with almost all the opposition calling for its withdrawal:
{Translation} MADRID, 6 Mar.
-The draft Law for the Right to Housing, sponsored by the ruling PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party) with support from the United We Can party, which contemplates the regulation of rental prices, faces its first vote in Congress this Thursday. Almost all the opposition are calling for its withdrawal, which anticipates a new tight vote on another of the Government’s ‘star’ projects.
-The PP (88 votes), Ciudadanos (9), PNV (6), PDeCAT (4) and Junts (4) have registered amendments calling for the initiative to be returned, and it is foreseeable that they will be joined by Vox (52), Foro Asturias (1), the two ex-deputies of UPN and the ex-deputy of Cs Pablo Cambronero, which would add up to 164 votes.
***ERC PRESENTS AN ALTERNATIVE TO TAKE THE LAW FURTHER***
-However, Esquerra Republicana has also registered an amendment to the whole, in its case to replace the Government’s law with an alternative text that affects measures such as the regulation of rental prices, anti-eviction regulations and surcharges on IBI for empty housing.
-ERC’s proposal eliminates any regulation of urban planning due to a possible conflict of competence, guarantees the suspension of an eviction if there is no prior proposal for social renting and brings the regulation of rental prices into line with the existing regulation in Catalonia, respecting the autonomous competence.
-Next Thursday there will be two votes, one on the ERC’s alternative text, which will not go ahead due to lack of support, and another on the other amendments, and if the thirteen Esquerra votes are added to those calling for the bill to be returned to the government, the PSOE and Unidas Podemos bill will have been defeated in the plenary session.
***PP: ATTACK ON PRIVATE PROPERTY AND FREEDOM OF ENTERPRISE***
-To reject the Government’s bill, the PP recalls the report issued by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), which argues that the regulation affects a “matter of autonomous ownership” and “limits” its competence, and assures that it is “a proposal that is clearly harmful to the rights and interests of citizens”.
-In their amendment, to which Europa Press has had access, the ‘populares’ lament the “markedly interventionist nature” of the law, which “attacks the right to private property and freedom of enterprise”, affecting “very negatively the real estate sector” and harming “both tenants and landlords”.
***INCOHERENT” AND “COSMETIC” CHANGES FOR Ciudadanos***
-For its part, Ciudadanos charges in its amendment against the Government’s reform, assuring that “the principles and spirit” of the same “are incoherent, cosmetic and inadequate to guide public housing policies and guarantee access to housing for all citizens”.
-Both parties criticise the regulation of rental prices, but also the authorisation to set IBI surcharges on empty homes, with the PP accusing the Government of encouraging the ‘squatting’ of homes with its proposal, considering the prohibition of evictions a “pernicious whitewashing” of the same.
-Ciudadanos clarifies that, despite being included as a milestone to be met in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, the return of the initiative “would not be an obstacle to meeting the milestone”, as the Government has “more than enough time” to present an alternative and be able to approve it before 30 September 2022.
***PNV, PDeCAT AND JUNTS SEE INVASION OF COMPETENCES***
-The PNV, for its part, rejects the proposal, considering that it “incurs in evident excesses”, by assuring that “housing is a matter of autonomous ownership”, as recognised by the Constitution and the jurisprudence established by the Constitutional Court, which identifies as an autonomous function to regulate in order to attend to interests related to decent housing.
-The PDeCAT also justifies its rejection as an “invasion of powers”, as well as considering the impact that the legislation proposed by the government could have on the supply of rental housing as “negative”.
-On the other hand, Junts will seek to overturn the Housing Law because it considers the bill to be “a total, forced and artificial absorption of powers”, as in their opinion it represents a “dismantling” of the regulations applied in Catalonia. These 3 EU/EEA Countries Have Already Removed All COVID-19 Entry Rules: After evaluating the current COVID-19 situation and concluding that travel restrictions no longer play a significant role in preventing the spread of the virus, two European Economic Area countries – Iceland, Norway – and one European Union country – Slovenia – have already decided to lift their entry measures entirely.

The Russian military has warned Ukraine’s neighboring countries from hosting its warplanes: Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov charged Sunday that some Ukrainian combat planes had redeployed to Romania and other Ukraine neighbors he didn’t identify. Konashenkov warned that if those warplanes attack the Russian forces from the territory of those nations, it “could be considered as those countries’ engagement in the military conflict.”

Russian war in world’s ‘breadbasket’ threatens food supply: The Russian tanks and missiles besieging Ukraine also are threatening the food supply and livelihoods of people in Europe, Africa and Asia who rely on the vast, fertile farmlands of the Black Sea region — known as the “breadbasket of the world.”
-Ukrainian farmers have been forced to neglect their fields as millions flee, fight or try to stay alive. Ports are shut down that send wheat and other food staples worldwide to be made into bread, noodles and animal feed. And there are worries Russia, another agricultural powerhouse, could have its grain exports upended by Western sanctions.
-While there have not yet been global disruptions to wheat supplies, prices have surged 55% since a week before the invasion amid concerns about what could happen next. If the war is prolonged, countries that rely on affordable wheat exports from Ukraine could face shortages starting in July, International Grains Council director Arnaud Petit told The Associated Press. Hungary to ban all grain exports effective immediately -agriculture minister: Hungary banned all grain exports effective immediately due to price increases caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, minister of agriculture Istvan Nagy told television channel RTL on Friday. Nagy added the government decree on the ban would be published on Friday. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/article/ukraine-crisis-hungary-grains-idAFL5N2V75IT

“People’s Convoy”- Trucks, RVs and cars flock to Washington area to protest COVID restrictions and other issues: More than a thousand large trucks, recreational vehicles and cars are gathering on the outskirts of Washington as part of a protest against COVID-19 restrictions that threatens to roll on the U.S. capital in the coming days.
The so-called “People’s Convoy,” which originated in California and has drawn participants from around the country, is calling for an end to all pandemic-related restrictions. It was inspired by demonstrations last month that paralyzed Ottawa, Canada’s capital city. Photo:REUTERS. MOONETTE – Organic Skincare for Mature Skin
We are a Torrox-based company specialising in the creation of formulae which help prevent premature skin ageing. We are committed to making effective products at affordable prices.
Your skin health matters to us. How you feed your skin is as important as how you feed your body. Why settle for anything less than natural and organic?
As our skin is the first layer of our defence against microbial infections, ultraviolet radiation and environmental contamination it plays a vital role in our health. As we grow older, however, our skin becomes thinner, wrinkled, and more sensitive; hence it requires the use of treatments containing specific ingredients to the care of treating mature skin.
Recognising this need we have created a range of formulae which help
-slow down ageing process by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
-improve facial complexion and eliminate blemishes.
At Moonette, we are passionate about health, beauty and plants. Your skin will benefit from the properties of botanic essential oils combined with a selection of nutrients for deep hydration, cell revitalization and antioxidant effect, all sourced from the finest natural ingredients with gorgeous fragrances.
Naturally, we care about our planet and feel the need to help reduce the sheer volumes of plastics waste that are generated daily around the globe. Presently, we are minimizing the usage of plastic materials in our production while seeking alternative forms of packaging. To help reduce pollution we are asking all local customers to recycle or reuse their Moonette skincare containers, and offering a small discount on future purchases to customers recycling containers.

Recommendations & Requests

Recommendation for LDeducationFarm: Saw an advert here for LDeducationFarm a couple of weeks ago. {https://digamextra.com/2022/02/04/digamextra-no-2177-friday-feb-4th-2022/}. We took a trip out there today, and all four adults really enjoyed ourselves, the lady is English and is happy to talk to you about any of her animals. All well looked after and the kids in there were having a great time petting all the animals, which include pigs, sheep, ponies, rabbits, hamsters, chickens, geese and all types of birds. Only took us 45 mins from Torre Del Mar

Covid Andalucia- The sixth wave of Covid refuses to say goodbye in Andalusia: {Translation} 04/03/2022 14:17
-The farewell to the sixth wave of the pandemic is dragging on. The 2,809 new infections counted this Friday by the Regional Ministry of Health and Families break the good prospects of the beginning of the week, when the daily confirmed cases fell below 800. The figure is similar to that of last Friday, 25 February, when 2,693 cases were recorded.
-The number of deaths also remains high at 30, nine fewer than on Friday last week.
-The 14-day cumulative incidence rate fell by 5 points to 280 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while the 7-day rate rose by 4 points to 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
-The province of Cordoba recorded the highest rate, with 363 cases, and Seville the lowest with 201.
-The best data of the day are reflected in the curve of hospital admissions. This Friday, the number of hospitalised Covid patients fell by 31 to 713, of which 95 are in the ICU, four less than the previous day.
-Covid patients account for 4 percent of the conventional beds in the Andalusian health system. In the case of the ICU, they occupy 5.2 percent of the beds. Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/andalucia/sevi-sexta-resiste-decir-adios-andalucia-202203041235_noticia.html

SPAIN

Electricity rates Friday 04Mar between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. were the most expensive in history: The spectacular rise in electricity prices will mark a historic milestone this afternoon, since the regulated tariffs or pvpc will be, between 6 pm and 10 pm Friday, the most expensive in our history for some ten million customers.
-Moreover, the rate will exceed 0.60 euros per kilowatt hour (kWh), for the first time, between 7 and 8 p.m. This price is 360% more expensive than the one on the same day last year (0.13192 euros).
-The increase in regulated rates responds to the sharp increase in electricity prices in the wholesale market, which tomorrow will mark a new annual maximum: 366.55 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) on average.
-The maximum price (409.30 euros) is very close to the record set yesterday at 410 euros.
-The invasion of Ukraine has pushed up gas prices even more, which has a direct impact on the Spanish wholesale market, since gas plants are the ones that generate the most expensive electricity in the entire ‘mix’.
-Since the war began, the average price in that market has risen 87%. In fact, the average for March is 312 euros per MWh, the highest in history. Full article: https://spainsnews.com/electricity-rates-between-6-p-m-and-10-p-m-will-be-the-most-expensive-in-history/

AXARQUIA

Axarquia village hit by spate of burglaries: The hamlet El Valdés, which belongs to the village of Moclinejo in the Axarquía, saw a spate of burglaries in just six hours on 20 February when three neighbouring houses were broken into. All properties were empty at the time.
Raquel Escaño, one of the affected residents who lives with her partner and young son told SUR: “We are afraid, because we don’t know if they can get back in. They must have been keeping an eye on us, because they waited for us to go out in the afternoon to break through one of the gates.”
She went on to say, “The strangest thing of all is that the dogs didn’t stop them, we have a Rottweiler and from what the neighbours told us, they only heard it barking.”
Last December, residents in the villages of Macharaviaya, Iznate and Almáchar demanded more police presence after five burglaries were reported in the space of one month. Full article:

MALAGA

Alert- Presence of listeria in several cheeses made in Álora: {Translation}
-The Regional Ministry of Health has learned of the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in fresh, semi-cured and cured goat and mixed cheeses that have been distributed in the province of Malaga. For the moment, there is no record in Andalusia of any reported case associated with this food alert.
-The products are from the company Hermanos Vargas Jimenez S.L., located in the Malaga town of Álora, under the brand name El Llano Jaral, refrigerated, presented in packs of two and one kilogrammes, 500 grams and 250 grams, and in all batches and expiry dates. The company has activated its product recall protocol by immediately notifying its customers.
-The products have been distributed in the towns of Estepona, Alhaurín de la Torre, Mijas, Cártama, Álora, Málaga, Manilva and Ronda, as reported by the Junta in a communiqué.
-On the other hand, they have recommended that people who have products affected by this alert in their homes should refrain from consuming them and return them to the point of purchase.
-In the event of having consumed products from the affected batch and presenting any symptoms compatible with listeriosis (vomiting, diarrhoea or fever), it is recommended that they go to a health centre and inform health professionals. Police in Malaga detained a 21-year-old man who is suspected of starting the 12 fires in a two-hour period: There was hardly any respite for firefighters and Local Police officers in Malaga in the early hours of Wednesday, 2 March. An alleged arsonist left a trail of destruction in his wake after setting alight to a dozen rubbish containers and vehicles, between the hours of midnight and 2am.
Local Police officers realised that the fires were taking place on a straight-line path and moved in that direction. And that is how they ended up locating the suspect, a 21-year-old man, who they saw hiding between two cars after he spotted the police presence.
When police identified and searched the individual he was found in possession of two lighters. Photo:SUR. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/malaga-city/arsonist-arrested-after-20220303114936-nt.html

Five-hundred strong tractor protest takes to the roads of Andalucía:
Five hundred tractors will be driving around Antequera this Thursday morning, 3 March, in protest at the difficult situation farmers are experiencing at present. They say they still have no support from the administrations, and two years after their last protest they now face an additional problem because of the drought. The convoy will be leaving Los Llanos at 11am and driving through the streets and around the industrial estate to the fairground, where a statement will be read out. Spain opens a new evaluation on menstrual disorders after the vaccine against COVID-19: The European drug agencies evaluated in the second half of 2021 whether the COVID-19 vaccine could be causing menstrual disorders. They concluded, after reviewing all the information then available for each of the vaccines, that there was insufficient data to support “the hypothesis of a possible causal relationship.” Now, the Spanish Medicines Agency (AEMPS) has reported that it is starting a new evaluation as a result of “two studies that suggest an increase in the frequency of these disorders after vaccination, with slight and transitory changes in menstrual cycles.”
In Spain, at least two universities are conducting research. The University of Granada began the study in the summer for a response based on scientific evidence to the symptoms reported by many women, as reported by elDiario.es. On the other hand, the University of Extremadura has already published the preliminary results in the absence of peer review. Of the slightly more than 17,500 women who responded to the survey launched by several researchers, half – between 45 and 50% – suffered alterations in their cycle as a result of becoming ill or being vaccinated against the coronavirus.

MALAGA

These are the Unicaja bank branches that will close in Malaga province on 18 March: The banking sector in Spain has closed about twenty percent of its branch networks in the last year. In Malaga province the Unicaja branches that will close are:

GPs in Malaga protest about problems in primary health care:
“Two years of the pandemic, more doctors retiring, not enough new specialists being trained and insufficient pay are some of the reasons that doctors are exhausted and discouraged,” said a spokesman for the Sindicato Médico union.
Using the slogan “Save our primary health care”, they called for GPs to see a maximum of 40 patients a day and to be able to spend 10 minutes per patient. They also want appointments in the afternoons to be paid as overtime and say the health service needs 1,000 more GPs and 300 pediatricians to guarantee quality health care.

Fitbit recalls over one million Ionic smartwatches over burn injury risk: Google-owned Fitbit has recalled more than a million of its Ionic smartwatches following reports that overheating batteries had caused burn injuries, the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said on Wednesday. The regulator said Fitbit had received at least 115 reports in the United States and 59 from overseas, including cases where the overheating led to third- and second-degree burns. These are some of the countries that have decided not to sanction Russia:
-India abstained from voting in a United Nations Security Council effort on Friday to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine. India has not supported the West’s package of sanctions and has reportedly sought ways to continue trading with Russia despite Russia’s removal from international financial institutions.
-The United Arab Emirates abstained from voting at the U.N. Security Council on Friday, joining China and India in their refusal to condemn Russia’s aggression, although it did vote to reprimand Russia in the U.N. General Assembly’s vote on Wednesday.UAE’s leaders have issued careful statements that have stopped short of criticizing the Kremlin directly.
-Israeli leaders have stopped short of taking the kinds of aggressive steps to counter Russia that its Western allies have taken, while still lashing out at the Kremlin’s decision to invade. Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid last week described the attacks in Ukraine as “a serious violation of the international order.” But Israel reportedly rejected requests from Ukraine to send weapons and share intelligence in recent weeks and has not imposed sanctions of its own against Russia.
-Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Tuesday that his country would not place any economic sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, citing a desire to maintain stable international relationships. Lopez Obrador also criticized what he described as the censorship of Russian media by technology companies.
-Serbia will also refrain from imposing sanctions against Russia, its president said last week, despite the country’s hopes of joining the European Union in the years ahead. Serbian leaders pointed to Russia’s support of Serbia during the conflict over the former Serbian province of Kosovo during the 1990s. Serbia also relies heavily on Russia for its energy needs, making retaliation against Moscow difficult despite pressure for Serbia to join with the EU’s sanctions efforts.
-The head of China’s banking regulator said Wednesday that China would not join Western sanctions nor impose any of its own, continuing its opposition to the punishments facing Russia. The move was expected, as Russia supplies much of China’s oil and is one of China’s closest trading and strategic partners. Chinese officials have not spoken out against the attack, and Beijing could potentially continue economic ties to Moscow that could dilute the effectiveness of the Western sanctions regime. Halting Erosion Using Vetiver Grass from Vetiver Spain:
Vetiver Grass is a fast growing non-invasive clumping grass that grows to 2 metres in height. It has a root system that grows to 3-4 metres deep and they are very strong.
The National Geographic Magazine has called them “Roots of Steel”.
Once Vetiver is established it is drought resistant.
We are located in Sayalonga and we can plant all year round but February and March are the best months to plant Vetiver. Vetiver loves the heat of a long summer to get established.
Decomposing Vetiver used as a mulch, improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away as it is a natural insect repellent. It is in the same family as Lemon Grass, which we also carry.
Vetiver also is a nutritious and replenishable animal feed. Horses, cattle, and pigs love it.
We use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive Ornamental hedge.

Banking For Seniors Update- The government must have measures to prevent financial exclusion of the elderly ready by 2 June 2022: {Translation}
-The Government will have until 2 June 2022 to make the necessary legislative changes to prevent the financial exclusion of the elderly following the publication, this Tuesday, of the Law for the Protection of Consumers and Users in Situations of Social and Economic Vulnerability in the Official State Gazette (BOE).
-The law, which comes into force on Wednesday 2 March, was finally approved on 24 February by the Congress of Deputies after ratifying the amendments introduced in the Senate, which included the protection of the elderly against financial exclusion and following the campaign to collect signatures ‘I am an elderly person, not an idiot’ promoted by Carlos San Juan in order to demand that banks do not discriminate against people on grounds of age and treat them with dignity.
-According to the text published in the BOE, the Government, in coordination with the Bank of Spain and representatives of the credit institution sector, will have to adopt measures in the next three months to favour the inclusion of the most vulnerable people, especially the elderly.
-To this end, it will have to carry out “as many measures as deemed necessary to guarantee in-person attention to the elderly, and to all those groups for whom access to financial services, through new technologies, constitutes a reason for financial exclusion”.
-Likewise, the Executive must approve measures “to bring financial services closer to everyone, especially in rural areas, and make them more accessible, taking into account the needs of the disabled and the elderly”.
-Thus, the aim is to ensure that the closure of bank branches does not entail the closure of their external ATMs and that institutions increase their staff to be able to help people with less digital skills to carry out different operations.
-The law also provides for an increase in the number of support staff to help people with less digital skills to carry out the necessary operations; the installation of signs and indications of priority in the use of ATMs by vulnerable people; and the promotion of the reservation of ATMs for the exclusive use of vulnerable people.
-Another of the aspects included in the third additional provision of the law is the implementation of simple, comprehensible, inclusive and secure banking access technologies and maximum security to protect bank users from theft, deception and online fraud.
-The Government will also continue to promote, among the strategic lines of action of the state-owned company Correos y Telégrafos, initiatives to prevent the financial exclusion of vulnerable consumers, such as the installation of ATMs in its branches in small towns without this type of service or the signing of collaboration agreements with banks to carry out cash deposit and withdrawal operations.
-Another of the new features is that accessibility will be guaranteed in the labelling of products for the visually impaired and regulations will be developed to guarantee the inclusivity of vulnerable consumers. Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/epsocial/igualdad/noticia-gobierno-tendra-tener-listas-junio-2022-medidas-evitar-exclusion-financiera-mayores-20220301102552.html

Spanish Government to send offensive weapons to Ukraine: {Translation}
-The Government is acting with “a single voice” in the decision to send offensive weapons to Ukraine as part of the European Peace Support Mechanism decided by the European Union, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Isabel Rodríguez, said on Tuesday at the press conference following the Council of Ministers.
-“Spain is going to send arms directly to Ukraine, we will do so as part of the European peace support fund, and we are doing so in a very significant way”, said Rodríguez, who pointed out that Spain is “the fourth largest contributor to this fund”.
-Therefore, “Spain is contributing to providing Ukraine with offensive means to defend itself against the aggression suffered by Russia”, he said.
-Thus, Spain supports the EU’s decision to make a centralised purchase of arms and offensive material, as was done to fight the pandemic, since “the strength lies in the Union” both in the response to a situation and in facing “the consequences of these responses”.
-“The most powerful weapon in the face of (Vladimir) Putin’s war is the union of all Europeans and also the political and social union in Spain”, she stressed, before pointing out that “Spain is a convinced government, and therefore the contribution in the form of offensive means such as armaments will be made within the Union”, Rodríguez emphasised.
-Asked what type of material Spain will contribute within the framework of this EU initiative, the minister replied that it will be the Ministry of Defence that will provide details of the shipments.
-The minister pointed out that this is the first time that the EU has used the Peace Support Fund to send offensive weapons, as until now it has been used to finance operations such as military training in third countries.
-Finally, and regarding the Russian president’s threats to use nuclear weapons, Rodríguez said that “the irrationality of Putin’s actions is reflected in these threats, and that is what we value”.

Spain’s largest illegal hookah tobacco factory is busted in Velez-Málaga: {Translation, summary}
Officials from the Tax Agency’s Customs Surveillance Department, in a joint operation with agents from the Guardia Civil, have dismantled the largest illegal hookah tobacco factory detected to date in Spain in the town of Vélez-Málaga, in the province of Malaga.
In this operation, called ‘Reveno-Glicerina’, three people have been arrested and three others have been investigated as alleged members of a criminal group that distributed ‘shisha’ tobacco, commonly known as hookah tobacco, nationally and internationally. It is estimated that the organisation had a potential production capacity of 250 kilos per day. The investigators estimate that the organisation could have sold more than 65,000 kilos of this product, which is widely consumed in northern Europe, and whose market value could exceed three million euros in the last year. Will Germany Re-Introduce a Draft? Ukraine war raises spectre of conscription in Germany: Germany scrapped compulsory military service just over 10 years ago, but the conflict in Ukraine has reignited the debate around whether young men and women should be required to fight for their country.
-Wolfgang Hellmich, a politician for Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s centre-left Social Democrats (SPD), called for an “urgent” debate on the issue in an interview with the Rheinische Post newspaper on Tuesday.
-Patrick Sensburg, the president of the German Reservists’ Association, has called for the reintroduction of military service through a general framework for both men and women.
-In the state of Lower Saxony, CDU members have put together a paper calling for the reintroduction of military service as “a decisive signal for ensuring an effective military deterrence,” according to Die Welt newspaper. CDU MP Carsten Linnemann told the Bild daily he was in favour of “a year of compulsory service for young men and women after completing their schooling”.
-According to Joachim Krause, a professor of political science at the University of Kiel, NATO will have to “switch back to a deterrence strategy” as a result of Russia’s offensive in Ukraine. “I think we might have to reintroduce conscription,” he said. Presence of US nuclear weapons in Europe unacceptable, Russia calls to remove it says Lavrov: Russia considers the presence of US nuclear weapons in a number of European states unacceptable, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in his video address to the Geneva conference on disarmament.
“It is unacceptable for us that US nuclear weapons still remain in a number of European states in contradiction to the basic points of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. The bad practice of joint nuclear missions with the participation of non-nuclear NATO states continues. During such missions, the use of nuclear weapons against Russia is being practiced,” he noted. $100 Milkshake & €214 Grilled Cheese Sandwich served at a legendary New York restaurant, Serendipity 3: {Translation}
The sandwich is made with two thick slices of French Pullman Champagne bread – made with Dom Perignon champagne and 24 carat edible gold flakes and butter with thick layers of white truffle. There are slices of Caciocavallo Podolico cheese, which is produced in southern Italy from the milk of free-grazing Podolica cows fed on strongly aromatic herbs such as fennel, liquorice, juniper, laurel and wild strawberries, which give the milk its sweet aromatic perfumes.
The sandwich is toasted in a Panini machine until golden brown and crispy and then cut into triangles. The edges of the sandwich are smeared with edible 24 carat gold and served in a “Mille Nuits” Baccarat glass. Info on the milkshake is in the video. Recommendations & Requests

Carole’s Book Nook:
New books don’t always live up to their promise. Such is the case this month when my “new book” was abandoned half way through for being, frankly, boring. So I am forced to return to my back catalogue once again.
-Toast – The Story of a Boy’s Hunger by Nigel Slater
Made into a TV film a few years ago this autobiography is different from any other in that it is food driven. Favourite foods lead you through the story of Nigel growing up in a middleclass family with a loving mother who could not cook, and the subsequent tragedy of her death and “replacement ” with another woman who was a brilliant cook and from whom he discovered his love of good food. Nigel went on to become a chef and later TV presenter, This is a lovely, funny reminiscence. You may need tissues.
-The Wrong Shade of Yellow by Margaret Eleanor Leigh
Margaret is a middle aged lady, virtually homeless, almost penniless, with only a bike she can’t ride and a tent, trying to find Utopia (which is somewhere in Greece) and start a new life. Her attempts at getting there are funny and interesting, It was her Big Fat Greek Midlife Crisis. Her mother, who joins her later, is hilarious. Loved this one and the sequel which I will detail later.
-Poldark by Winston Graham
When I buy a new book I don’t like and don’t know what to read I go back to the Poldark saga. Those of you who have seen the TV versions may not appreciate the depth and scope of the 12 books, spanning the end of the 18th Century to beyond the battle of Waterloo. The ongoing fortunes of the Poldarks and their arch enemies the Warleggans are embellished by true facts and real historical figures. I am sure it was meticulously researched even down to the weather patterns, bringing the whole period to life. In the latter books it can become a bit too political at times, but it all adds to the flavour. Winston Graham’s writing is perfection, plain yet pure literature, some of the passages are simply breath taking. And we still have the shipwrecks, jail breaks, love trysts and the wonderful flavour of Cornwall in all its moods. Who else could find a thousand different ways to describe the sea? I am currently on Book 5 “The Four Swans” one of my favourites. This is my fourth reading of the saga. Never bored with them, they are the books that keep on giving.

Inflation shoots up in February to 7.4%, its highest rate in 33 years:

Rent Control Coming to Spain within 18 Months, as Part of Requirements to Receive EU Funds:
-Spain is experiencing the first stages of the Housing Law which, for the first time, contemplates concepts such as rental price control, which have been applied for decades in other countries: The new regulation has not yet begun to be discussed in the Congress of Deputies, although the Government has urged that it be processed urgently. A requirement to which the Executive itself has committed, wants the Law to be approved before the end of the year. The reason is that it has been promised to Brussels as part of the requirements to receive European funds.
-It will be then, once the law is approved, the time to design a new price index, which makes it possible to measure and control rent increases in areas with more upward pressure on rents. An index that has to be ready, at most, in 18 months from the approval of the Law. Full article: https://spainsnews.com/oregon-los-angeles-palo-alto-this-is-how-rent-control-has-worked-in-the-us/

ALMERIA

‘No windfarm’ say 13,000 opposed to installation off the Cabo de Gata-Nijar national park: To date 13,000 people – including members of 120 local, regional and national groups – have signed the online http://www.change.org petition organised by the Stop Parque Eolico Mar de Agata platform.
“They understand that the loss of biodiversity resulting from the windfarm would be as serious as climate change,” an Amigos del Parque Natural Cabo de Gata-Nijar group spokesperson said. “And the battle against climate cannot be fought at the expense of biodiversity.”
Stop Parque Eolico Mar de Agata argues that the 20 wind turbines, each of which is 261 metres high, would occupy an area of 70 square kilometres very close to several officially-protected marine zones.

U.S. Capitol barricades return as truckers protest heads to Washington: -Federal authorities are reinstalling fencing around the U.S. Capitol as Washington prepares for planned trucker protests inspired by demonstrations in Canada against COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions, police said on Sunday.
-Authorities were taking the step to protect President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech scheduled for Tuesday and to “prevent any disruption to the important work of Congress,” U.S. Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger said.
-A group of American truckers began a cross-country trip from California to Washington last week, inspired by Canadian protests against COVID-19 restrictions that paralyzed Ottawa for three weeks.
-More than two dozen 18-wheeler trucks, along with about 50 pickups and recreational vehicles, left Adelanto, California, about 80 miles (130 km) northeast of Los Angeles, last Wednesday. This self-styled “People’s Convoy” is bound for the Beltway, a major highway encircling the U.S. capital, to demand an end to COVID-19 vaccine and mask requirements. (Other sources claim the number of vehicles participating is closer to 1000 as vehicles join the convoy as it passes thru their states along the 3000 mile journey. -Ed.)

Rugby News- XV del León beats Romania to be one step away from the World Cup: The Spanish men’s rugby team won with authority (38-21) over Romania this Sunday in Madrid, a direct rival, to stay one step away from achieving direct qualification for the next World Cup in France 2023.
The first two teams in the global ranking of the 2021 and 2022 European Championships will obtain the direct passport for the World Cup, while the third will play, in November, the Final Qualifying Tournament.
The XV del León surpassed Romania in the table and placed second, a privileged position that it will have to defend against Portugal on March 13 and a week later in Tbilisi against Georgia

Football News- FIFA doesn’t ban Russia, announces team will play as ‘RFU’ in World Cup qualifying: Despite three European countries, Sweden, Poland and the Czech Republic, saying this weekend that they refuse to play Russia in the qualifiers, the soccer federation announced that it will not be banning Russia from competing in the playoffs to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
-However, FIFA did make changes regarding Russia’s participation that it hopes can settle the dispute and added that banning the country is still an option. It decided, through a unanimous vote from the Bureau of FIFA Council, that the team can play using the “RFU” initialism of its football federation, the Russian Football Union.
-The ruling Sunday afternoon also included a flag and anthem ban as well as the determination that the RFU squad can only play on neutral territory and not in Russia — something of vital importance to Sweden, Poland and Czech Republic — with no spectators
-It’s unclear whether FIFA’s decision will quell the calls for Russia to be removed from the qualifiers, but Polish football federation president Cezary Kulesza gave a pretty good hint on Twitter Sunday afternoon it won’t.
-“Today’s FIFA decision is totally unacceptable,” he tweeted. “We are not interested in participating in this game of appearances. Our stance remains intact: Polish National Team will NOT PLAY with Russia, no matter what the name of the team is.” Full article: https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2022/feb/27/fifa-doesnt-ban-russia-announces-team-will-play-rf/

TECH

Social Media Hijacking Malware Spreading Through Gaming Apps on Microsoft Store: A new malware capable of controlling social media accounts is being distributed through Microsoft’s official app store in the form of trojanized gaming apps, infecting more than 5,000 Windows machines in Sweden, Bulgaria, Russia, Bermuda, and Spain.
-Electron Bot’s core functionality is to open a hidden browser window in order to carry out SEO poisoning, generate clicks for ads, direct traffic to content hosted on YouTube and SoundCloud, and promote specific products to generate profits with ad clicking or increase store rating for higher sales.
-On top of that, it also comes with functions that can control social media accounts on Facebook, Google and Sound Cloud, including registering new accounts, signing in, as well as commenting and liking other posts to increase views.
-The attack sequence gets triggered when users download one of the infected applications (e.g., Temple Endless Runner 2) from the Microsoft store that, when launched, loads the game but also stealthily drops and installs the next stage dropper via JavaScript.
-The list of publishers that distribute compromised games that pushed the malware-laced apps is as follows –
Lupy games
Crazy 4 games
Jeuxjeuxkeux games
Akshi games
Goo Games
Bizzon Case
If you have any game apps from any of the above publishers, uninstall them, restart the device, then run a full malware scan. Here is a good malware scanner for Android, https://www.malwarebytes.com/android  Full article: https://thehackernews.com/2022/02/social-media-hijacking-malware.html

Putin puts nuclear forces on high alert, escalating tensions: President Vladimir Putin dramatically escalated East-West tensions by ordering Russian nuclear forces put on high alert Sunday, while Ukraine’s embattled leader agreed to talks with Moscow as Putin’s troops and tanks drove deeper into the country, closing in around the capital. Citing “aggressive statements” by NATO and tough financial sanctions, Putin issued a directive to increase the readiness of Russia’s nuclear weapons, raising fears that the invasion of Ukraine could lead to nuclear war, whether by design or mistake.

Bus Fares: Just to correct my post yesterday, the full fare on the Torrox buses is now 1 euro (previously 1.20) and with existing card 50 cents. Presumably the “free” bit will kick in when the new cards start to circulate. Carole, El Morche, carolemhart@yahoo.com

COVID-19

Covid Andalucia- Incidence of Covid in Andalucia returns to be below 400 points two months later: {Translation} 25/02/2022 13:32
-Andalucia’s cumulative incidence of Covid has dropped below 400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants for the first time in two months. This variable, which measures the progress of the health crisis, stands this Friday at 397 points, a level that has not been reached since early December, before the explosion of the sixth wave caused by the omicron variant.
-This is because infections continue to fall. Although there are sawtooths in the statistical series, this Friday there have been 2,693 positives, half of those that occurred on the same day last week and a third of those that occurred this Thursday.
-The pressure on healthcare is also down. In fact, Andalusia has dropped below the 900 hospitalised by Covid after reducing the number of patients admitted by 22.
-In the ICU there has also been an improvement, with 124 (two less than on Thursday). These data highlight the fact that the sixth wave of the pandemic is already in a clear retreat. In fact, there are 60 per cent fewer hospitalised patients now than at the peak of this wave.
-The number of deaths, on the other hand, although falling, has been discreet. On Friday, 39 deaths were recorded. This is ten more than the previous day, but the community has now accumulated eight days below 40 per day, when there have been more than 60 in recent weeks. In total, 12,879 people have died since the beginning of the pandemic. SPAIN

The wholesale price of electricity exceeds 260 euros/MWh this Saturday and reaches an annual maximum:
– The average price of electricity in the wholesale market will rise 8.73% this Saturday compared to this Friday and will exceed the level of 260 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), thus reaching a new maximum so far in 2022, at heat from the rise in the price of natural gas after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.
-Specifically, the average price of the ‘pool’ for this Saturday will be 261.11 euros/MWh, some 21 euros more expensive than today’s, located at 240.13 euros/MWh, reports Europa Press.
-You have to go back to last December 24, when the historical peaks were registered in the ‘pool’ with daily averages above 300 euros/MWh, to find a more expensive day.
-By time slots, the maximum electricity price for this Saturday will be between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., with 300.70 euros/MWh, while the minimum, of 237.14 euros/MWh, will be registered between 05:00 hours and 06.00 hours. Football News- Champions League final moved to Paris from St Petersburg after Russian invasion of Ukraine: UEFA has moved the Champions League final on May 28 to Paris from St Petersburg, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. TECH

Deleting Facebook? Hitting “deactivate” won’t make Facebook stop collecting your data. Here’s what you need to do instead:
-If you’re looking to delete your Facebook account, you might have any number of reasons for pulling the plug. Perhaps you’ve noticed social media usage taking a toll on your mental health. Maybe you take issue with the platform for reports of privacy violations, political brawling, damaging misinformation and other content that could be harmful to teens. Or you could be trying to wipe your personal info from the internet altogether. Either way, we’ll walk you through how to get rid of your Facebook account for good.
-It’s important to note that there’s a difference between deleting your Facebook account and deactivating it. Deactivating your Facebook account temporarily freezes it, which is useful if you want a brief hiatus. But that does nothing to prevent the company from tracking your online activity.
-To fully separate from Facebook, deleting your account is the only answer. Deleting it also severs ties to Facebook Messenger, the platform’s chat app. (If you want to also get rid of Instagram and WhatsApp, which are Facebook properties, you’ll have to do that separately.) We’ll explain some things you’ll need to consider before going through the process, which requires time and patience.

Recommendations & Requests

Buses and Mobiles: I caught the bus yesterday hoping for a free ride. I already have a bus pass and I’m hoping I don’t have to get a different one. They are charging everybody (as far as I could tell) 50 cents per trip. Bus Passes don’t count, we all paid 50c. I have saved 10c ! I don’t see why they have to make it so difficult. If they are prepared to make it free, make it free to all. They would save all the admin and money handling, the buses could keep to time. So what if the odd visitor gets a free ride? That’s good tourist publicity. I decided to ask at the town hall but there was a queue stretching out into the street of people clutching paperwork. After a bus pass? Probably.
As for Birgit’s comments earlier in the week about everybody expecting you to have a smartphone. I agree with her entirely. Why are people such sheep these days? They follow each other like lemmings grasping at every new tech gadget. It is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid having one and I suppose I will have to give in eventually. Latest obstacle, I was in a new hotel in Malaga and I needed a smartphone to access TV channels. I tried to buy something online (I avoid this if I can) and they wanted me to tap my screen when my screen does not tap. Just because technology exists you should not be forced to use it, and then to update it at your own expense. Just watch what happens with Windows 11.

Vélez-Málaga Jazz Concert Series: {Translation}
-For the eighth consecutive year, the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo ‘Francisco Hernández’ in Vélez-Málaga presents its series of jazz concerts, which, thanks to the great artists who have performed at the CAC in recent years, have become a benchmark for this musical discipline throughout the province, attracting a multitude of visitors.
-The Jazz concert series will begin on 23 March with a performance by Eva Jiménez Quartet, a jazz singer, pianist and composer who stands out for her musicality and sensitivity. Throughout her career she has performed at important festivals, theatres and halls all over Europe and the United States. On 29 April, the group Zirwicky will perform, a quartet that mixes elements of contemporary music and free improvisation, and through these languages they search for a greater capacity for expression that they transmit to the audience. On 20 May, the cultural space will host a concert by the Juan María Villa Trio, who, together with a double bass and a drummer, will surprise the audience with their music. To end this Jazz series, on 3rd June, the concert by Raquel Pelayo Quartet will be held, a young woman gifted with extraordinary expressiveness and communicative sensitivity, who together with musicians of great trajectory, will not leave the audience indifferent.
-All the performances are free of charge and until full capacity is reached. All of them will take place at 19.00 hours, except for the Raquel Pelayo Quartet concert on 3rd June, which will take place at 20.00 hours. Tennis News- Zverev expelled from Acapulco for assault on umpire’s chair after doubles loss: Alexander Zverev was kicked out of the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco, Mexico, for “unsportsmanlike conduct” after his doubles match, the men’s tour said on Wednesday, with the German later apologising for his behaviour.
Zverev, partnering Brazilian tennis player Marcelo Melo in doubles, came perilously close to hitting umpire Alessandro Germani when he repeatedly assaulted the umpire’s chair with his racquet after a 6-2 4-6 (10-6) defeat to the British-Finn pair of Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara.
After shaking hands with the opponents, the 24-year-old Zverev, ranked third in singles, approached the umpire’s chair and hit it repeatedly before heading towards his courtside seat, upset over a line call during the match earlier. He approached the chair a second time and once again hit it while shouting expletives. Banking Services For Seniors- Unions consider it “unfeasible” to implement the bank’s measures to improve care for the elderly: {Translation, summary} 23Feb22
-The CCOO and UGT trade unions have criticised on Wednesday that the bank has drawn up a list of measures to strengthen care for the elderly in bank branches without taking into account the workers.
-Thus, it considers it “unfeasible” to undertake the proposed measures in view of the “drastic reduction of staff” carried out by financial institutions, which has led to an “exponential increase” in workloads, and in view of the “commercial pressure” from the management of the companies. For this reason, the CCOO points out that, although they support financial inclusion, this must be guaranteed with “sufficient staff to deal with the workloads”.
– It has also stated that the problem “cannot be solved by training the staff”, since the workers “know perfectly well” how to attend to the elderly; nor by “bringing forward” the shift in the waiting queues; nor by “bringing forward the collection of pensions”, something that “has been done for many years”, according to the union.
-On the contrary, the solution proposed by the union is to have more people to attend and that digitisation is not carried out by “obligation”, but “as an option”. 9,000-year-old ritual complex found in Jordan desert: Archaeologists deep in the Jordanian desert have discovered a 9,000-year-old ritualistic complex near what is thought to be the earliest known large human-built structure worldwide.
The Stone Age shrine site, excavated last year, was used by gazelle hunters and features carved stone figures, an altar and a miniature model of a large-scale hunting trap.
The giant game traps the model represents — so-called “desert kites” — were made of long walls that converge to corral running gazelles into enclosures or holes for slaughter.
Similar structures of two or more stone walls, some several kilometres (miles) long, have been found in deserts across Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey and Kazakhstan.
It hailed the “spectacular and unprecedented discovery” of the ritualistic site, believed to date to about 7000 BC.
It featured two steles with anthropomorphic features, the taller one 1.12 metres high, other artefacts including animal figurines, flints, and some 150 arranged marine fossils. Full article: https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20220223-9-000-year-old-ritual-complex-found-in-jordan-desert
