COVID-19

Covid inpatients in Malaga triple in only two weeks: {Translation} Updated: Saturday, 24 July, 2021 – 13:50
-The vaccination process is still underway, but the Delta variable, together with the relaxation of measures before the arrival of the summer season, means that the number of cases continues to soar. This is already resulting in a significant increase in hospital pressure in the province. The Department of Health and Families reports 383 hospitalisations, with 57 of them in Intensive Care Units (ICU). This is three times the number reported only a fortnight ago, when on 10 July Malaga recorded 127 hospital admissions, with 20 of them in ICU. The daily number of cases is still close to 1,500 and three new deaths have been reported. This is the epidemiological picture for Saturday 24 July in the province.
-The data provided by the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia (IECA) are clear. Malaga has registered 1,484 new infections in the last 24 hours (Friday to Saturday), a very high figure, although the peak reached on Friday of 1,980 infected with the virus is lower. These are very high numbers, although on 24 July the figure is already lower than at the end of January with the peak of the third wave of infections. On 31 January there were 1,787 infections per day, mainly due to family gatherings at Christmas. Now all this upturn is due to very different circumstances.
-The pressure on hospitals continues to increase, as a direct consequence of these high numbers of new infections. In just 24 hours, the Junta warns of 58 new hospitalisations in Malaga and 4 admissions to the ICU. On the previous day there were 41, which slightly increases this worrying figure. This means that Malaga’s hospitals currently have a total of 383 admissions, of which 57 patients are in Intensive Care Units. These are the highest figures in the entire autonomous community.
-The worst news is the notification of three new deaths with Covid-19, bringing to 1,703 the number of deaths of patients with coronavirus since the first one was recorded on 13 March 2020. On this day, the province recorded 50% of the deaths of people infected by the virus in Andalusia, which reported a total of six. However, 612 people have beaten the virus in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of people who have recovered since the pandemic began in Malaga to 108,037.
-The Cumulative Incidence by the Covid-19 Active Infection Diagnostic Test is increasing at the regional level. If on Friday this figure stood at 470.89, this Saturday it rose to 36.96 points, and the AI in Andalusia currently stands at 497.85. ANDALUCIA

Andalucia unable to report vaccination totals over the weekend due to computer problems: The Junta de Andalucía has not been able to report the total number of vaccinations administered over the last 48 hours due to a problem of uploading the data.
The latest data known was that administered on Thursday, July, 22: 9,628,373 doses given and 4,638,910 Andalucians now have the complete vaccination schedule.

EUROPE

French lawmakers approve bill to tackle fourth wave of coronavirus: The French parliament on Monday approved a bill which will make COVID-19 vaccinations mandatory for health workers as well as require a bolstered health pass in a wide array of social venues as France battles with a fourth wave of coronavirus infections.
-Visitors heading to museums, cinemas or swimming pools in France are already denied entry if they cannot produce a pass showing that they have been vaccinated against COVID-19 or have had a recent negative test. The pass has been required for large-scale festivals or to go clubbing.
-From the start of August, the pass will further be needed to enter restaurants and bars and for long-distance train and plane journeys.
-The measures contained in the bill are due to end on Nov. 15. A final green light from the constitutional court, the nation’s top jurisdiction, will be needed before the law can come into effect. Father Louis, our Chaplain, is available for counsel and support, regardless of anyone’s beliefs or background. We aspire to be a welcoming and inclusive community, open to all people seeking faith and friendship.

COVID-19

The 5.721 new cases of Covid in Andalusia confirm that the descent of the fifth wave was a mirage: {Translation} Updated: 23/07/2021, 18:09
-The crest of the fifth wave of the coronavirus has not broken in Andalusia. After a significant drop in the number of cases on Thursday, on Friday there were 5,721 new infections and 7 deaths. If this is not an update of data from previous days, the difference is significant with respect to the same days in recent weeks. The community recorded 3,610 cases on 16 July, and 2,800 on 9 July. Today’s figure is the highest number of new Covid cases since February.
-Thus, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate is up 36 points to 471 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is still below the national average – 659 cases yesterday. The 7-day rate has risen in 24 hours from 211 to 232 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.
-The incidence is very high in Malaga, which today has a rate of 787 cases. The situation has changed so much in just one day that Marbella has once again exceeded the rate of 1,000 cases (1,058), one day after the meeting of the alert committees that determines the municipalities that are candidates for the application of the curfew. Estepona is close to that limit, with 991 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
-Two other provinces exceed the 500 barrier: Cádiz (504) and Córdoba (500.5). The province of Seville has the lowest incidence rate with 305 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
-In terms of care pressure, Andalusian hospitals have 944 Covid patients hospitalised today, 33 more than on Thursday, of which 165 are in ICU, 5 more than the previous day. Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/andalucia/sevi-5721-nuevos-casos-covid-andalucia-confirman-bajada-quinta-espejismo-202107231222_noticia.html

Malaga records the highest number of infections in the whole pandemic, with almost 2,000 new positives in one day: {Translation} Updated: 23/07/2021, 13:42
-Malaga recorded 1,980 new cases of Covid-19 on Friday, the highest figure since the pandemic began last year. In addition, there are two new deaths in the province due to the virus, bringing the total number of deaths due to the coronavirus in Malaga to 1,700.
-This drastic rise in the number of infections brings to an end two days in which the number of new cases had fallen below 1,000. And with it the hope that the fifth wave of the coronavirus was fading away. Malaga remains, moreover, the province most affected by the disease in this new wave, and its newly declared positives are more than double the next, which is Seville, with 886 today.
-In Andalusia as a whole, Health has reported 5,721 new cases and seven deaths on Friday.
-As a result of this fifth wave, the pressure on healthcare continues to increase. On Friday, 358 patients were admitted to hospitals in Malaga with coronavirus, 16 more than the previous day. 41 people have required hospitalisation according to the latest report from the Junta. There are 50 patients in the ICU, two more than yesterday.
-As a result of this increase, the incidence rate (IA) has risen again. This is certainly true for the province as a whole, rising from 717.9 infections per 100,000 inhabitants to 787.6. And in the capital, from 804.6 to 889.4. The possibility of a night-time curfew in the main city on the Costa del Sol is now just over a thousand cases.
-More curious is the specific case of Marbella. If yesterday, Thursday, it managed to avoid the territorial committee of high impact having to recommend a night-time curfew, thanks to the fact that for the first time this week it had fallen below the threshold at which this measure is taken (1,000 cases), this Friday it has exceeded it again, with 1,058.7.
Estepona, with a rate of 991.1, Torremolinos, with 808.6 and Benalmádena, with 796.9 are also of concern.
-The total number of deaths due to the pandemic has reached 1,700 today with the notification of two new deaths of people who had the disease caused by Sars-Cov2.

SPAIN

‘Everything pointing to’ need for a third Covid-19 vaccine dose, says Spanish health minister: Speaking during a radio interview, Spanish Health Minister Carolina Darias went further than the official position of regulatory agencies and scientists, also predicting the need for yearly boosters, given the new variants of the coronavirus that could reduce the protection already being offered by the existing medication. Darias went even further when asked whether residents of Spain would have to be vaccinated against Covid-19 every year. “Yes, without a doubt,” she replied. Malaga moves to Level 3

From this midnight the whole province of Malaga moves to Level 3- From Ayuntamiento de Torrox: {Translation}
The province’s incidence rate is at 720 (cases in the last 14 days per 100.000 population).
The Axarquia is in a ratio of 465. Although Torrox is among the lowest rates of the municipalities of the coast of the province (323,2), we cannot let our guard down and must continue to set an example of responsibility.
Nearby municipalities are located in 579,1 in Velez-Malaga; 565,9 in Corner of Victory; 564,4 in Algarrobo and 472,9 in Nerja.
There’s a change in the aforos that for the Hostelery, in addition to the percentages indicated in the table, would be maximum 4 diners indoors and 6 outside. No changes in schedules. FB link

New Covid restrictions in Malaga as the whole of the province moves to health alert level 3:
-The Junta de Andalucía has decided that all six health districts of Malaga province will move to alert level 3, from midnight today (Thursday, 22 July) as a result of the increase in Covid-19 infections.
-From Friday there will a tightening of coronavirus control measures in many areas, including Malaga city – that will affect the hospitality, commerce and culture sectors.
-Level 3 restrictions mean that in bars and restaurants, there will be a maximum capacity limit of 50 per cent imposed indoors, with a limit of four people per table inside and six on the terraces, and social distancing measures must be complied with.
-The allowed capacity in stores and shopping centres will be restricted to 60 per cent, always ensuring a minimum distance of 1.5 metres between people who do not live in the same household.
-The number of people who can attend wakes and funerals (10 indoors and 20 outdoors), ceremonies and religious services (50 per cent capacity) and celebrations is also reduced: indoors, a maximum of 50 per cent of the capacity must be respected at tables or groupings of tables and, with a maximum of 100 people in closed spaces. Tables will have a limit of four people indoors. At outdoor celebrations, the maximum attendance allowed will be 250 with six people per table. Musical performances and dancing will not be allowed.
-The capacity in cinemas, theatres and auditoriums is reduced to 60 per cent, with a seated audience and social distancing.
-Gyms must also reduce their capacity by 50 per cent indoors with a maximum of ten people, while 60 per cent will be allowed outdoors, with a maximum of 15 people.
-Nightlife establishments will only be allowed to open indoors if they do not exclusively serve drinks, otherwise they must keep to the measures established for hotel and restaurant establishments at this alert level. Outdoors, nightlife businesses will be able to occupy 50 percent of their terraces with a limit of six people pe rtable. Bar service and consumption and ‘small-format’ performances and dancing will not be allowed.
-The measures will take effect from midnight this Thursday (22 July) throughout the province. Source: http://www.surinenglish.com/local/202107/22/covid-restrictions-whole-malaga-20210722174401.html

COVID-19

Covid infections fall for the second consecutive day in Malaga, which has three deaths:
{Translation} Updated: 22 July, 2021 – 13:18
-The number of infections in the province has fallen for the second consecutive day. If on Tuesday there were 1,137 infections and on Wednesday 962, this Thursday there are 880 positives by diagnostic tests of active infection (PDIA) which includes PCR and antigen tests reported by the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia (IECA). Despite this, three new deaths with Covid in the province are to be regretted.
-This drop in the rate of infection is not, for the moment, the norm, so we must continue to keep our guard up. The cumulative incidence (AI) is up 0.3 tenths of a point compared to Wednesday’s figure, so we can speak of a certain stability, at least in time, depending on what happens in the coming days. The AI in Malaga on Thursday shows 717.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days. At 7 days this rate is 340.6 cases, which may suggest a decrease in the rate if the number of infections continues to fall.
-The capital, on the other hand, continues to show an upward trend, although the rate of increase is slowing down. On Thursday, the AI rose by 14.4 points, compared with 17.1 on Wednesday and 54.1 on Tuesday. This brings the rate in the capital to 804.6 points.
-The other side of the coin is Marbella, the city’s rate has dropped for the second consecutive day and is now below the 1,000 cases that made the possibility of the Territorial Committee requesting a curfew or the perimeter closure of the municipality, which should be endorsed by the TSJA, hover over it. The 42 fewer cases registered in the city leave the rate on Thursday at 986.9 cases in the last 14 days, 404.4 in the last 7.
-Above 1,000 cases of incidence in the province are only the municipalities of Alfarnatejo (1,098.9), Villanueva de la Concepción (1,338.2), Benaoján (2,202.3), Faraján (1,409.4) and Montejaque (1,475.2).
-Forty-two people were admitted to hospitals in Malaga, two of them directly to the Intensive Care Units (ICU) of the health centres. This has meant that 342 patients remain bedridden in Malaga’s hospitals, 18 more than on Wednesday. In the ICUs, the increase is lower, with three more cases of seriously ill patients requiring this care, with 48 patients in these units. However, the number of recovered patients is on the rise, with 489 patients who have successfully overcome their illness. Source, Spanish:

Nerja Beach Restrictions- Ayuntamiento de Nerja: The Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, has decreed the closure of the beaches of the municipality from Thursday, from 23.00 to 7. 00 hours, for any leisure and recreational activity, in response to the proposal made by the Department of Beaches to comply with the Order of July 21 of the Ministry of Health and Family of the Junta de Andalucía which establishes the measure for coastal municipalities that are in level 3 health alert, with the aim of curbing the spread of coronavirus and the increase in the incidence rate of recent days, especially among young people who are the ones who most frequent the beaches at night.  FB link

Costa del Sol hotels warn of August holiday bookings slowdown: Aehcos president, José Luque, said the data is worrying as the number of British tourists arriving has not reached the level expected after the UK lifted quarantine requirements on English people, jabbed by the NHS, returning home.
“The effect has not yet been felt in Costa del Sol hotels and Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Benalmádena – the towns most dependent on the British market – are reporting occupancy rates of 47, 59 and 68 per cent, respectively,” he said adding, “and bookings have slowed down in August due to the increase in infection rates.” Performing better were Malaga city with occupancy rates of 77 per cent and Nerja (76 per cent) while Marbella registered 66 per cent. Malaga moves to Level 3

From this midnight the whole province of Malaga moves to Level 3- From Ayuntamiento de Torrox: {Translation}

COVID-19

Spain once again exceeds 30,000 daily Covid-19 infections: Spain has again, this Wednesday (21 July), exceeded 30,000 daily coronavirus infections for the third time this month. Exactly 30,587 new positives were registered by the Ministry of Health, a considerable increase compared to Tuesday’s data when 27,286 infections were counted.
The strong increase in new infections has caused a new rebound in the cumulative incidence rate, climbing to 644.50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, a figure not been seen since the beginning of February after reaching the peak of the third wave. However, the incidence rate ‘only’ increased 22 points, the smallest increase since Tuesday, 6 July. Covid Andalucia- Incidence rises for 20th consecutive day to 432.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days: {Translation} Updated: 21/07/2021 12:15
-Andalusia has registered a total of 3,560 cases of coronavirus on Wednesday 21 July, which is the sixth day in a row more than 3,000 cases, according to data from the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia (IECA), which has counted eight deaths, in line with Tuesday (nine) and more than last Wednesday (one).
-On the other hand, the cumulative incidence rate of the community accumulates 20 consecutive days of increases and stands at 432.9 per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, 14.4 points more in 24 hours and 118.8 more in a week.
-The region has not had such a high infection rate since 16 February, five months ago, when it was 451.1 points.
-The 3,560 cases on Wednesday follow 3,687 on Tuesday, 4,103 on Monday and Sunday, 3,999 on Saturday – the highest 24-hour figure since 6 February – 3,610 on Friday, 3,561 on Thursday and 2,901 on Wednesday.
-By provinces, Malaga is again the one with the most cases with 962, followed by Seville with 739, Cadiz with 460, Granada with 358, Cordoba with 333, Almeria with 265, Huelva with 246 and Jaen with 197.
-The eight deaths from covid were recorded in Malaga (three), Seville, Jaén (two each) and Granada (one).

SPAIN

Congress approves lowering VAT on electricity from 21% to 10% until the end of the year amid criticism that it is a “stopgap”: {Translation, summary}
-The Congress of Deputies has approved this Wednesday in an extraordinary plenary session the temporary reduction of VAT on electricity from 21% to 10% until the end of this year and the suspension of the 7% tax on electricity generation for three months, a measure that came into force on Saturday 25 June.
-The Lower House has given its support to the Government’s decree with 193 votes in favour, 3 against and 152 abstentions, but not without criticism, considering the measure a “patch” because it does not solve the problem. The Minister for Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, who defended the decree before the House, said that the price of electricity will remain high because the signals coming from raw materials in international markets remain high in the medium term. Specifically, she justified the rise in electricity prices by the increase in natural gas and CO2 rights, which are not likely to fall in the short term.
-Specifically, the government calculates that the VAT reduction will represent a reduction of 6 euros per month in the average household’s bill, which means that its application will allow savings of 36 euros by the end of the year, while the suspension of the tax on electricity generation will allow a reduction of 2% to 3% in household bills, 3% to 6% for SMEs and medium-sized companies and around 6% for large industry.
-VOX spokesperson M. Olona has reproached the Government for the fact that normal activities such as running a washing machine have become a “real luxury” due to, among other measures, the new regulation of the electricity bill and has denounced the vulnerability of those people who cannot limit themselves to using electricity during off-peak hours due to their dependence on certain electrical appliances because they suffer from an illness.

Eric Clapton- Don’t expect to see me at venues that ask audiences to be vaccinated: Eric Clapton is staying the course with his beliefs about COVID-19 vaccines: He recently announced that he won’t be performing “where there is a discriminated audience present.” That means the guitar hero won’t play concerts in venues that require ticket-holders to be vaccinated.
“Following the PM’s announcement on Monday the 19th of July 2021 I feel honour bound to make an announcement of my own: I wish to say that I will not perform on any stage where there is a discriminated audience present,” Clapton said in a statement. “Unless there is provision made for all people to attend, I reserve the right to cancel the show.” Photo:Cattermole/GETTY. Halting Erosion using Vetiver:
From Vetiver Spain in Sayalonga
Our Nursery is open by appointment depending on the current travel restrictions. Please email or call first. We have Moringa seedlings, Organic Moringa powder and Comfrey plants. We also have some local trees and some exotic trees from Africa.
Vetiver is a rapid growing and non-invasive sterile clump grass with a height of 1-2 metres and a root system of 3-4 metres in depth. We have been providing Vetiver throughout the EU for almost 10 years now. We are located in Sayalonga where we can plant year round but our best results by far start in February. The reason is that Vetiver is indigenous to India and Vetiver loves the heat of the summer. Use Vetiver cuttings as mulch around all of your fruit trees. Decomposing Vetiver improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away all while helping to maintain soil moisture.
Vetiver is a nutritious and replenishable animal fodder. Horses and pigs love it. We use it in our chicken pens replacing hay because it stops mites.
In the 2 photos below you will see land prepared for Vetiver and the results 2 years later.
We also use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive ornamental hedge.
Here is a link to a short video showing the results.
https://youtu.be/rjTmb_LL2uo
We suggest planting now, as this is the BEST time of the year to plant.
To see more images of Vetiver go to this link.

COVID-19

NEW COVID RESTRICTIONS EXPLAINED- The Junta restores the curfew from 2am to 7am in the areas of Andalusia with the highest incidence: {Translation} Updated: 20/07/2021 20:38
-Andalusia will once again have a curfew in high incidence areas. This has been announced by the Andalusian government after the meeting of the group of experts advising it on the management of the pandemic. The timetable for night-time home confinement will be from two in the morning to seven in the morning. This would currently affect localities such as Conil, Tarifa and Marbella.
-However, the measure will only be for municipalities that exceed the incidence rate of more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and have more than 5,000 inhabitants.
-What about those with less than 5,000 inhabitants? “A specific evaluation will be carried out,” according to the Junta. The Executive of Juanma Moreno details that the measure must be ratified by the High Court of Justice of Andalusia (TSJA). (Has to be endorsed by the high Court of Justice of Andalusia in each case that are proposed by the Board)
-There is also a time limit in the case of beaches and parks. Thus, the Junta “urges” the municipalities to close both spaces from eleven at night to seven in the morning to avoid crowds and festivities that could be a focus of contagion. The measure is proposed for all municipalities that are not on level 1 alert and does not affect catering services.
-In addition, the Andalusian government has modified the capacity of bars, restaurants and nightlife venues. Thus, in the hotel and catering trade, there will only be a maximum of four people per table, up to ten, depending on the health alert level of the health area where the establishment is located. The Andalusian government adds that consumption at the bar will only be permitted at levels 1, 2 and 3.
*Discotheques and bars*
-In the case of nightclubs and bars, which can open until two in the morning, they must have a register of customers to control “the traceability of possible contagions”. The capacity in these premises will be a maximum of 75 per cent indoors in level 1 and 50 per cent in level 2.
-Consumption in these nightlife venues may only take place outdoors, not indoors. In addition, tables may not have more than four people at a table. “In the exteriors, bar service will only be allowed in levels 1, 2 and 3, with consumption at tables,” adds the note issued by the Junta.
-There are also new features for celebrations, which reduce the capacity to 75 per cent on level 1, “with a maximum of 200 people and four diners per table”. On level 2, the maximum permitted capacity will be 75 per cent with a maximum of 150 people. Bar service will also not be permitted indoors, while outside service will only be permitted on levels 1, 2 and 3, with consumption at the table, according to the Junta.
*Contagions among young people*
-The Junta de Andalucía indicates that the committee of experts has highlighted “the rapid rise in the accumulated incidence indicator, with special relevance in the young population”.
-The Regional Minister of Health, Jesús Aguirre, added that “the irruption of the new Delta variant in Andalusia, which has a greater capacity for transmission”, to which he added that, “although current vaccination coverage continues to rise, it cannot be ruled out that the greater number of cases may begin to influence the indicators of healthcare pressure”.
-The Minister wanted to point out that “the experts have proposed the recommendation that no parties, festivals, pilgrimages or other popular festive activities should be held while the current epidemiological situation continues, just as it is not recommended to hold meetings or private parties where more than 10 people gather”. Gas bottle prices go up again in Spain: The price of the 12.5 kilo butane gas cylinder in Spain will increase by 4.99 per cent to 15.37 euros as of this Tuesday (20 July), the fifth consecutive rise and reaching its highest level since March 2015.
The price rise was confirmed in the BOE Official State Gazette, and the main blame has been put on the increase in the prices of raw materials (+ 12.91 per cent) and freight (+ 15.23 per cent), which were partially offset by the slight appreciation of the euro against the dollar (+ 1.32 per cent).
This latest increase is added to the previous four, also of almost 5 per cent in November 2020, January, March and May 2021. Since September of last year, the maximum price of the butane cylinder has risen by 26.5 per cent and the 15.37 euros price, as of this Tuesday, is the highest since March 2015, when it stood at 15.40 euros. EU court declares employers can ban workers from wearing headscarves: The highest court in the EU has decided that private employers can ban workers from wearing any type of headscarf or religious symbols, under certain conditions.
As the EU court declares this right for employers, it reminded that this policy can only be implemented in order to present an image of neutrality, and the items can be banned under an “employer’s desire to pursue a policy of political, philosophical, and religious neutrality, with regard to its customers or users, in order to take account of their legitimate wishes”, basically reaffirming a judgment that was passed in 2017. Beds of cardboard are “anti-sex”, the last temptation for athletes at Tokyo 2020: {Translation, summary}
As there is no contact narrower than that maintained during the sexual act, the organizers are doing everything possible to make it difficult sexual relationships between athletes within the Villa.
Organizers decided that the 18,000 beds in the Villa were to be of cardboard. The so-called beds antisexo were designed to withstand the weight of a person and athletes were asked to avoid sudden movements on top of them before the risk of rupture, but it has proved that they are more resilient than expected and can withstand up to 200 pounds. Secure Web Searches- Why You Should Avoid DuckDuckGo (DDG) 2021 Edition, They Have Sold Out to Big Tech, Now Microsoft-Hosted and With Extra Privacy Risks!
The article linked below addresses these DDG privacy concerns as explained by tech security experts. Not overly geeky, but too much info to post here, so check the article if you are interested. Here are the main points of concern.
-Nefarious History of DDG founder & CEO
-Direct Privacy Abuse
-Censorship
-Harmful impact on net neutrality
-Utilizes privacy abusing CloudFlare services
-Harmful Partnerships with Adversaries of Privacy Seekers

Safe, secure web-search alternatives to DDG that actually do respect users privacy:

Note: While I previously recommended Searx search and Startpage search, I must remove those recommendations now. Certain practices of Searx have come to light that make it inappropriate for casual users seeking privacy. As for Startpage, they have been sold to System1 Corp. The history and business model of System1 includes the practice of gathering “as much data as possible” and profiling users. Other web searches that claim to be secure, and are in fact more secure than Google/Bing/Yahoo, but are not as secure and privacy respecting as the three listed above, are Mojeek and Ecosia. Ecosia is interesting because they plant trees based on the number of searches users do, and they use green technology that claims to remove 1Kg of CO2 for every search done!

COVID-19

The committee of experts of Andalusia will meet on Tuesday, July 20, to discuss relaxing or toughening the Covid restrictions. -Ed.

Covid Andalucia- The fifth wave is already being felt in Andalusian hospitals with more than 700 patients Covid: {Translation} Updated: 19/07/2021, 17:11
-The significant increase in coronavirus infections in the last two weeks is starting to become evident in Andalusian hospitals, which on Monday have already surpassed the 700 admissions barrier with Covid. A total of 712 people have been hospitalised, 149 of whom are in ICU, twelve more than last Saturday. The figures are back to the care pressure of a month ago, although they are contained for what happened in previous waves as it is not proportional to the number of new infections.
-This record of new cases reached 4,103 positive cases on Monday, data referring to 48 hours, but much higher than those recorded on previous Mondays. On 12 July there were 3,169 new infections, compared to 2,144 on 5 July and 1,260 on 28 June. This gives an idea of the evolution of the fifth Covid wave in the community.
-The 14-day incidence rate has risen to 398 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, with a 7-day rate of 207.7 cases, proof of the upward trend in infections.
-Malaga, with 678 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, has the highest rate in the region. The provinces of Granada (375), Huelva (356), Jaen (289), Seville (252) and Almeria (246), which has the lowest rate in Andalusia, are below the Andalusian rate.
-There have also been 5 deaths due to Covid since last Saturday. Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/andalucia/sevi-coronavirus-andalucia-quinta-hace-notar-hospitales-andaluces-superan-700-pacientes-covid-202107191208_noticia.html

Covid Spain- The latest coronavirus wave in Spain, what the statistics tell us so far: Covid-19 cases have been rising exponentially in Spain once more since the end of June, with new infections doubling each week. The pandemic is in a different phase, thanks to the vaccination campaign, but concerns are rising for two reasons: the speed of the spread – above all among young people – and hospital admissions, which are also going up. Covid Axarquia: {Translation} Updated: 19 July, 2021, 13:00
-The data provided on Monday 19 July by the Ministry of Health of the Andalusian Regional Government confirm 219 new cases of coronavirus infection in the Axarquia region, with 38 people who have managed to overcome the disease and one new death.
-Thus, the new death due to Covid has been notified in Vélez-Málaga, which already has 92 deaths due to coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic. The new infections have been reported in Vélez-Málaga (99). Rincón de la Victoria (64). Nerja (16). Torrox (10). Cómpeta (8). Algarrobo (5). Colmenar (5). Moclinejo (4). Riogordo (2). Arenas (1). Comares (1). Frigiliana (1). Periana (1). Sayalonga (1) and Totalán (1). The people cured since last Friday are located in Nerja (11). Vélez-Málaga (10). Colmenar (6). Rincón de la Victoria (6). Torrox (2). Almáchar (1). Periana (1) and La Viñuela (1).
-The incidence rate of the virus in Axarquia continues to rise and stands on Monday at 383.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, 67 points more than last Friday. By municipalities, Alfarnatejo is the municipality with the worst incidence rate with 1,098.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is followed by Moclinejo with 959.2, Algarrobo with 594.9, Totalán with 542.2 and Rincón de la Victoria with 510.6.
-Four other municipalities in La Axarquía are above 400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. These are the towns of Vélez-Málaga with 495.4, Cómpeta with 479.0, Riogordo with 477.4 and Comares with 451.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Covid Malaga- The weekend sees in Malaga more than 1,500 infections by Covid and the incidence rises almost 100 points: {Translation} Updated: July 19, 2021 – 14:50
-The escalation of the coronavirus data in Malaga continues to increase. While experts are already talking about a fifth wave, in the province of Malaga the cumulative incidence (AI) has risen 97 points to 674.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days. In the capital, the most populated area of the province, this indicator has increased 123 cases since the Junta de Andalucía last updated the data on Friday. The AI in the capital stands at 728 points. Marbella, another of the province’s large population centres, exceeds 1,000 cases by 22 points on Monday. The other municipality that has exceeded 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days is Istán, whose AI is 1,137.9 cases.
-Exceeding 1,000 cases of AI would mean the perimeter closure of urban centres, although it is only one of the indicators to be taken into account and the health authorities are taking more into account others such as the situation in hospitals or the accumulated incidence in the over 65s. Furthermore, the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno Bonilla, has already announced that the tourist municipalities would be governed by other regimes, so it does not seem that the committee of experts is going to decree a closure of the Costa del Sol town.
-The pressure on hospitals continues to increase in the province. There are 267 patients admitted to the province’s health centres, 27 more than last Saturday, when the Consejería de Salud y Familias issued the latest balance sheet with these data. Of these patients, 48 are in Intensive Care Units (ICU), which is eight more. Over the weekend, 49 people were admitted, five of them to the ICU.
-The number of infections exceeds 1,500 in the sum of the last 48 hours. In addition, two new deaths are to be regretted, bringing the total number of deaths of Covid patients to 1,690 since the first death in Malaga was recorded on 13 March 2020.
-As for those who have recovered, 287 people have successfully overcome the disease in the province of Malaga, making a total of 105,677 people who have managed to recover after having been infected. Institut Pasteur Preclinical Study- Ivermectin a Powerful Immunomodulatory Drug Targeting SARS-CoV-2: Over 62 ivermectin studies (randomized controlled trials, observational and case series) have been conducted around the world with overwhelmingly positive outcomes. A few meta-analyses have added to the promising evidence. Yet regulatory authorities, apex research agencies, and global groups such as the World Health Organization (WHO), while monitoring the trends, seek to act in ways to subvert the progress and potential for the generic repurposed drug. Helicopters and specialist teams tackle three wildfires in Malaga province: Two fires have been declared in the Axarquía and one in Estepona, on the Costa del Sol.
The first fire was declared, this morning, in the small town of Salares in the Axarquia region. In Torrox, on the border with Cómpeta, another fire started, which was declared stabilised at 12.20 pm. It started in the Finca La Palmera area. The last to be declared was in Estepona, at 2.30pm. Photo:PLAN INFOCA. England to demand vaccination proof for clubs, mass events: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday that English nightclubs and other venues with large crowds will require patrons to present proof of full vaccination from the end of September.
“I can serve notice now that by the end of September when all over 18s will have had their chance to be double jabbed, we’re planning to make full vaccination the condition of entry to nightclubs and other venues where large crowds gather,” Johnson told a press conference. “Proof of a negative test will no longer be enough.” Full article: https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/uk-demand-vaccination-proof-clubs-big-crowd-events-johnson-says-2021-07-19/

OTHER NEWS

New Danger Exposed When Using iPhones on Public or Shared Wifi Networks: ZecOps nicknamed the issue “WiFiDemon.” It’s also a zero-click vulnerability in that it allows the threat actor to infect a device without requiring any user interaction, although it requires that the setting to automatically join Wi-Fi networks is enabled (which it is, by default).
-“As long as the Wi-Fi is turned on this vulnerability can be triggered,” the researchers noted. “If the user is connected to an existing Wi-Fi network, an attacker can launch another attack to disconnect/de-associate the device and then launch this zero-click attack.”
-“This zero-click vulnerability is powerful: if the malicious access point has password protection and the user never joins the Wi-Fi, nothing will be saved to the disk,” the company added. “After turning off the malicious access point, the user’s Wi-Fi function will be normal. A user could hardly notice if they have been attacked.”
-All iOS versions starting with iOS 14.0 and prior to iOS 14.3 were found to be vulnerable to the RCE variant, with Apple “silently” patching the issue in January 2021 as part of its iOS 14.4 update. No CVE identifier was assigned to the flaw.
-Given the exploitable nature of the bug, it’s highly recommended that iPhone and iPad users update their devices to the latest iOS version to mitigate the risk associated with the vulnerability. Full article: https://thehackernews.com/2021/07/turns-out-that-low-risk-ios-wi-fi.html

Freedom Phone- The ‘uncensorable’ smartphone: The new device uses it’s own operating system and comes with features like “tracking blockers and an uncensorable app store.” (I heard on a techie radio program that it uses a modified,  “ungoogled” version of Android. -Ed.)
Further, the device has its “own app store”, which allows you to read, watch and “think” however you wish to without being censored. This means, one can download apps that are banned on other app stores.
Freedom Phone utilizes an operating system “based on free speech”. The phone comes with a privacy guard called “Trust”, which reportedly alerts the users if their device being tracked or if they are being spied on. Prices under €500.

Pegasus- the spyware technology that threatens democracy – everyone should see this video from The Guardian, International Edition: Pegasus spyware is capable of bypassing your phone’s security and gaining complete access to your device – including emails, messages, GPS location, photos, video and your phone’s microphone. A Guardian investigation can now reveal widespread abuse of the Pegasus technology by government clients around the world who purchased the spyware from its Israeli manufacturer, the NSO Group. People who were selected as possible targets include journalists, lawyers and human rights defenders. Recommendations & Requests

Window Cleaners: I read a recent recommendation in Digame from a person who had windows cleaned by E&A cleaners. I enlisted their help to clean mine in a large two bedroom apartment with lots of glass doors and windows.
They completed the job perfectly! They also cleaned the frames which gave everything a new and pristine look.
I was so impressed that I employed them again a few weeks later to do a complete deep clean of my apartment.
Everything was left immaculately clean!

The committee of experts of Andalusia will meet on Tuesday, July 20, to discuss relaxing or toughening the Covid restrictions. -Ed.

No updated Covid numbers or info have been released since what I posted in the Saturday issue. -Ed.

SPAIN

Editor’s Note: In case you didn’t make the connection, the Spanish PM last week replaced 5 veteran cabinet members with much less experienced, socialist liberals, the day after the EU authorized the release of billions of euros in EU Covid Relief funds to Spain. Just a coincidence? Anyone else remember the fiasco the last time the EU dumped a load of cash on Spain? The unfinished highway improvements leaving ramps to nowhere, while construction companies pocketed millions they could not later account for, does that ring a bell? Hmmm…

MALAGA

The deadline for applications, which opens after its publication today in the Official Gazette of the Province of Malaga, will end next July 31

Huge data leak shatters the lie that the innocent need not fear surveillance: {The Guardian}
Billions of people are inseparable from their phones. Their devices are within reach – and earshot – for almost every daily experience, from the most mundane to the most intimate. Few pause to think that their phones can be transformed into surveillance devices, with someone thousands of miles away silently extracting their messages, photos and location, activating their microphone to record them in real time.
Such are the capabilities of Pegasus, the spyware manufactured by NSO Group, the Israeli purveyor of weapons of mass surveillance.
The last time the Guardian adopted such extreme counter-espionage measures was in 2013, when reporting on documents leaked by the whistleblower Edward Snowden. Those disclosures pulled back the curtains on the vast apparatus of mass surveillance created after 9/11 by western intelligence agencies such as the National Security Agency (NSA) and its British partner, GCHQ. It meant a radical overhaul of our working methods, including a ban on discussing our work with sources, editors or lawyers in the presence of our phones.
The Pegasus project may do the same for the privatised government surveillance industry that has turned NSO into a billion-dollar company. Full article: https://www.theguardian.com/news/2021/jul/18/huge-data-leak-shatters-lie-innocent-need-not-fear-surveillance

World’s first organic caviar is produced in Loja, Granada:
Caviar Riofrio is a company that was founded back in 1963 by the Navarrese doctor, Luis Domezain, located in the town of Loja, and originally built as a trout farm, but the doctor soon incorporated sturgeon to the farm.
Carlos’ effort paid off last Christmas when the company sold its first production of organic and beluga caviar, “It was exceptional because the calibre of the roe reached 3.5 millimetres, compared to the usual 2.8mm, and one kilo of this limited production reached €8,000”, explained Carlos Portela, grandson of Dr. Domezain, and current director of Riofrio.
