COVID-19
Spain once again exceeds 30,000 daily Covid-19 infections: Spain has again, this Wednesday (21 July), exceeded 30,000 daily coronavirus infections for the third time this month. Exactly 30,587 new positives were registered by the Ministry of Health, a considerable increase compared to Tuesday’s data when 27,286 infections were counted.
The strong increase in new infections has caused a new rebound in the cumulative incidence rate, climbing to 644.50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, a figure not been seen since the beginning of February after reaching the peak of the third wave. However, the incidence rate ‘only’ increased 22 points, the smallest increase since Tuesday, 6 July. Covid Andalucia- Incidence rises for 20th consecutive day to 432.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days: {Translation} Updated: 21/07/2021 12:15
-Andalusia has registered a total of 3,560 cases of coronavirus on Wednesday 21 July, which is the sixth day in a row more than 3,000 cases, according to data from the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia (IECA), which has counted eight deaths, in line with Tuesday (nine) and more than last Wednesday (one).
-On the other hand, the cumulative incidence rate of the community accumulates 20 consecutive days of increases and stands at 432.9 per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, 14.4 points more in 24 hours and 118.8 more in a week.
-The region has not had such a high infection rate since 16 February, five months ago, when it was 451.1 points.
-The 3,560 cases on Wednesday follow 3,687 on Tuesday, 4,103 on Monday and Sunday, 3,999 on Saturday – the highest 24-hour figure since 6 February – 3,610 on Friday, 3,561 on Thursday and 2,901 on Wednesday.
-By provinces, Malaga is again the one with the most cases with 962, followed by Seville with 739, Cadiz with 460, Granada with 358, Cordoba with 333, Almeria with 265, Huelva with 246 and Jaen with 197.
-The eight deaths from covid were recorded in Malaga (three), Seville, Jaén (two each) and Granada (one).

Congress approves lowering VAT on electricity from 21% to 10% until the end of the year amid criticism that it is a “stopgap”: {Translation, summary}
-The Congress of Deputies has approved this Wednesday in an extraordinary plenary session the temporary reduction of VAT on electricity from 21% to 10% until the end of this year and the suspension of the 7% tax on electricity generation for three months, a measure that came into force on Saturday 25 June.
-The Lower House has given its support to the Government’s decree with 193 votes in favour, 3 against and 152 abstentions, but not without criticism, considering the measure a “patch” because it does not solve the problem. The Minister for Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, who defended the decree before the House, said that the price of electricity will remain high because the signals coming from raw materials in international markets remain high in the medium term. Specifically, she justified the rise in electricity prices by the increase in natural gas and CO2 rights, which are not likely to fall in the short term.
-Specifically, the government calculates that the VAT reduction will represent a reduction of 6 euros per month in the average household’s bill, which means that its application will allow savings of 36 euros by the end of the year, while the suspension of the tax on electricity generation will allow a reduction of 2% to 3% in household bills, 3% to 6% for SMEs and medium-sized companies and around 6% for large industry.
-VOX spokesperson M. Olona has reproached the Government for the fact that normal activities such as running a washing machine have become a “real luxury” due to, among other measures, the new regulation of the electricity bill and has denounced the vulnerability of those people who cannot limit themselves to using electricity during off-peak hours due to their dependence on certain electrical appliances because they suffer from an illness.

Eric Clapton- Don’t expect to see me at venues that ask audiences to be vaccinated: Eric Clapton is staying the course with his beliefs about COVID-19 vaccines: He recently announced that he won’t be performing “where there is a discriminated audience present.” That means the guitar hero won’t play concerts in venues that require ticket-holders to be vaccinated.
“Following the PM’s announcement on Monday the 19th of July 2021 I feel honour bound to make an announcement of my own: I wish to say that I will not perform on any stage where there is a discriminated audience present,” Clapton said in a statement. “Unless there is provision made for all people to attend, I reserve the right to cancel the show.” Photo:Cattermole/GETTY.
