SPAIN
Living In A Welfare State– When working no longer pays off– €1,800 a month working full time compared to €1,450+ living on benefits: {Trans, summary}
– A single mother with two children who works full time on €25,000 annual gross ends up just €350 a month better off than an identical mother who does not work at all. The working mother nets around €1,800 a month after tax and social security, plus the Child Support Supplement (CAPI).
– The non-worker collects roughly €1,450 a month from the Minimum Vital Income (IMV) and CAPI alone. And that €350 gap is before the extra assistance and aid programs that are available: IMV claimants are exempt from pharmacy co-payments, children under fourteen get free DNI issuance, and many families layer on regional help for school meals, rent, or energy bills, extras the working mother does not get.
– Strip away the effort, the commute, the childcare juggling, and the tax bill, and the state has engineered a system where working a full year barely outpaces sitting on benefits. This is the “poverty trap” in action: the harder you work, the less it visibly pays, and the incentive to clock in each morning keeps shrinking.
– {Note: this article ignores related, popular ploys. Some people on benefits work “black”, for unreported cash. In this way, someone can work “black” part-time while collecting full benefits, and actually have a greater income than another with a full time job who is following the rules. Another thing this situation causes is that single parents will claim to be single even if they have a partner in the shadows – not officially residing in the family home – as declaring a partner would lower their benefits. This is financial incentive to create ever more single parent families, much to the detriment of the children and society. -Ed.}

ANDALUCÍA
Remember when someone in your class repeating a year of school was a rare thing? Now, one in three public education students in Andalusia has repeated a year at some point: {Trans, summary}
– In Andalusia, the percentage of repeaters is above the national average and much higher than the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) average. Repeaters are especially concentrated in public education. The PISA 2025 Report places Andalusia at the bottom of a ranking in which Spain is sinking in science, reading and mathematics: 32.2% of Andalusian students enrolled in public schools have repeated a year at least once, compared to 18.8% in private schools. In the community as a whole, the rate reaches 28.8% of repeating students.
– In this sense, the distance between Spain, the European Union and the OECD is notable. The Spanish average of repeaters stands at 22%, while it drops to 12.9% in the EU and 7.9% in the OECD. PISA stresses that Spain has a “considerably higher” incidence of repetition than average and that the difference between the public and private networks is particularly pronounced. IMMIGRATION IN SPAIN
The Army was prepared to act in Ceuta three days before the assault, Sanchez admin ordered them to stand down, they did not receive the order to deploy until the border had already collapsed: {Trans, summary}
– The Spanish Army stationed in Ceuta was on alert and ready to intervene three days before the mass border crossing of 30 July, but the effective order to deploy did not arrive until 19.30, more than ten hours after the crisis began and once most migrants had already crossed. According to El Mundo, citing military sources, over 3,000 troops of the General Command of Ceuta received instructions on 27 July to prepare for a possible serious episode of border pressure. Intelligence services had detected calls on social media for coordinated entries by fence and sea, coinciding with Morocco’s Throne Day.
– When the mass influx began between the night of July 29 and the morning of July 30, the available personnel finished their preparations, convinced that the order to intervene was imminent. However, they remained inside their barracks while thousands of people crossed the border and a very small number of Civil Guards tried to contain and organize the flow in the Tarajal area.
Military sources cited by El Mundo say that confusion and frustration increased among the troops when they realized they had thousands of trained soldiers just a few kilometres from a border that was overflowing, but no one was authorizing their deployment.
– The Defence Chief of Staff reportedly proposed deploying the Army around midday, but the move was allegedly halted after a call from Moncloa (presidential residence). Only around 300 soldiers were initially authorised to deploy, with roughly 2,500 mobilised the following day. Source, Spanish: https://alertasiete.com/2026/09/12/el-ejercito-estaba-preparado…

The settlement of beach squatters in Ceuta is growing despite the relocations, now more than 100 shacks are spreading from El Trampolín to Benítez beach: {Trans, summary}
– More than a hundred shacks now occupy Benítez beach in Ceuta, in an expansion of the settlement that, for about a month now, has also been concentrated in the El Trampolín area. The makeshift shelters have begun to proliferate next to the desalination plant that separates the two beaches.
– The structures, built mainly from reeds, cardboard, fabric, and tape, occupy a large part of the Benítez curve and extend along the breakwaters as well. Some are located a few meters from the shore, while others are situated further inland.
– On Saturday morning, more than 100 makeshift shelters could be counted, while some invaders continued to collect materials to build new structures, often damaging existing buildings in the process of collecting panels and lumber.
– This situation adds to the one that has been ongoing for weeks at El Trampolín beach. The president of Ceuta, Juan Vivas, estimated this Friday that around 4,500 people remain settled in this area.
– In Benítez, some of the squatters are using the public beach showers, now surrounded by shacks. Makeshift fires for cooking, using stones and pans, have also been observed. The proliferation of these settlements occurs despite the fact that the Municipal Ordinance on Use and Exploitation of the Beaches of Ceuta prohibits camping and the installation of tents or similar structures, as well as preventing fires in these spaces, and that relocation tent camps have been opened.
– The situation in the settlements has also been marked by incidents of violence. Friday night another brawl broke out, leaving two people injured with knives and eight arrested, in addition to fires set in the area. Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish leaders meet to plan break-up of United Kingdom:
– The leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will gather on Monday to sign a deal designed to kick-start the break-up of the United Kingdom, The Telegraph can disclose. At an unprecedented summit in Cardiff, the three first ministers will put pen to paper on a joint declaration demanding the right to hold independence referendums. The meeting comes after Andy Burnham suggested to MPs that he would authorise another Scottish referendum if there were a “clear consensus” in favour of one.
– Mr Swinney {pic}, the SNP leader and Scottish First Minister, said on Sunday: “For the first time ever, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are led by pro-independence first ministers. There could be no clearer sign that the status quo is not sustainable – and that Westminster must prepare for a post-UK future. IRELAND
Trump surprises with remarks in Ireland- “The way I look at it, it’s going to happen eventually. It may as well happen now.”:
– Donald Trump has said he would “love” to see a united Ireland and that it “may as well happen now”.
– The US president appeared to endorse the push for constitutional change on the island at the start of a two-day visit to Ireland on Saturday. The unexpected intervention prompted a swift rebuttal from the UK government and Northern Ireland’s unionist leaders.
– “I don’t want to cause any problems, but I will tell you, I’d love to see it unified,” Trump told reporters at joint press conference with the taoiseach, Micheal Martin, in Dublin. “I think it would be a great feather in everybody’s cap if that happened. You know what? The way I look at it, it’s going to happen eventually. It may as well happen now.”
– The unification of Northern Ireland with the republic of Ireland would be “fantastic”, Trump said. “The UK will have something to say about it, obviously. But I think it would be a great thing. I mean, how can it be bad?”
– The intervention jolted his hosts and came two weeks after Andy Burnham said a referendum on unification was “off the table”, which angered Sinn Fein and other Irish nationalists.
– Speaking later on Saturday, Trump acknowledged that his comments on unification, made in response to a reporter’s question, would be controversial. “No matter what you say or how you say it, there’s no good answer,” he said. “I gave a nice answer, I think. We’ll worry about it tomorrow.” Unification, he added, would be a “very cool thing”. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
Another Major AI Exec Sounds Alarm On AI Development: {Trans, summary}
– Anthropic AI CEO Dario Amodei {pic} has called for slowing the pace of AI capability development, warning of risks including loss of control, cyberattacks, bioterrorism, and serious economic disruption. Writing on his blog, he argued progress could remain fast while the extra time is used wisely.
– He cited two triggers: AI’s “recursive self improvement,” which drove rapid gains over the summer and could outstrip humans’ ability to understand or control such systems, and the “OpenAI Hugging Face incident,” in which AI systems reportedly coordinated cyberattacks without being instructed to, allegedly also occurring at other firms including Anthropic.
– Amodei proposed independent evaluation, democratic coordination with public institutions, and global coordination between democratic and authoritarian states, prioritising caution over speed and prudence over profit. He acknowledged the measures would not be easy but said they are owed to humanity. Amodei has previously faced accusations of alarmism over similar warnings. – An RTVE investigation has exposed a network of TikTok accounts using artificial intelligence to create fake female influencers. These avatars, which do not exist as real people, post videos showing supposedly dramatic weight-loss transformations to promote paid diet guides and apps. The accounts, some with over 180,000 followers, never disclose that the women and their physical changes are AI-generated, despite TikTok’s rules requiring such transparency.
– Detection tools confirmed the videos were AI-created with high confidence. Experts warn these fabricated transformations fuel unrealistic body expectations, particularly among young women, and can lead to restrictive eating, excessive exercise, frustration and mental health harm. The advice offered, such as extreme diets and 75-day challenges, lacks any professional oversight. TikTok has since suspended the identified accounts for breaching community guidelines, but similar profiles continue to appear. Under EU rules, AI-generated content must be labelled, though enforcement remains difficult. Source, Spanish: https://www.rtve.es/noticias/20260913/cambios-fisicos-no-existen…
