I am a British lady in her fifties looking for employment for the period 11 July to 9 September, all or part. I currently work as an English teacher but my contract is only for the 9 month period of the school year and I need additional work to supplement my income. My Spanish is still very basic, so I wouldn’t be able to work as a waitress, shop assistant, etc. where it would be necessary to speak to the general public.

Recommendation Needed –Printer

I have been having a problem with my Epson printer.I need to buy a new one. Can anyone recommend where I can buy one please?

Please do not suggest Eroski: this is where I bought the current one.It’s not possible to return faulty printers to them. They say it is necessary to deal directly with the manufacturer. I need to buy from a dealer who will help if there is a problem. In the UK, of course, the company who sold the product is responsible. However this is Spain!

I have spoken to Epson, a local repairer in Nerja and even the cartridge supplier without any solution.

The price of expert repair is disproportionate to the price of a new machine.

Any advice appreciated.

Question re Vehicle Licence

I have just heard about a friend who lives between here and Norway – about 4/5 months back and forth.

Owns property and has own Spanish registered car.  Having property and car has to have NIE.

Drives on his Norwegian licence.

Stopped by police yesterday who would not accept that he is not a resident and told him he should have a Spanish licence and fined him €200.

Has anyone else heard this one?  Have the goalposts been changed again?

He is now getting a stamped form which states he is non-resident and will fight the fine.   Joan

The change to Smart Meters may cause problems for some people as the new meters will trip the supply when your power consumption at any one time is greater than the amount you are contracted for. Some contracts have never been upgraded and remain at a minimal 2kW which means that, after the new meter has been fitted, switching on a kettle will cause the supply to trip. You can find your contracted power on your electricity bill under potencia contratada. In some cases Sevillana fitted a limiter in a separate box by the main fuse box (called an ICP). If this is the case then you are probably ok. Upgrading your contracted power can be costly as you will need a boletin ( certificate) and to get one may require some upgrade.

Recommendation- Plumber

I want to recommend Chris Wright, a plumber of whom I first heard here on Digamextra.

Last week we had a flood from a toilet in our apartment.  I called Chris, and he came quickly and got the job done, and done well, in spite of the ferreteria selling him a broken part that he had to replace.

He also changed the filter in the kitchen sink tap, so it no longer splattered the counter, and explained how to prevent calcium build-up (the cause of the splattering) by rinsing the filter periodically with “agua fuerte” (hydrochloric acid).  He even donated a bottle of agua fuerte so we’d have it available.

Really a lovely, friendly man, in addition to a good plumber and hard worker.

What’s on – Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar – Meeting re EU Referendum – Question & Answer Meeting

 

 

Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar Centre closed for Public Holiday Monday 2^nd May.

Tuesday & Wednesday 3^rd & 4^th May – Coach Excursion to Cordoba Patios.  Please come and join friends of Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar on a 2 day/ 1 night coach excursion to see the Festival of the Cordoba Patios.  This is a contest of patios and crosses that was first started in 1918, where house owners of the city decorate their homes with beautiful flowers and plants in order to win the prestigious awards presented by the municipality.  The patios are in various parts of the city, close to the Jewish quarter and Cathedral and the finest example is found in the Palacio de Viana.

On the first day you will stop for breakfast on the way to Cordoba where you will arrive at approximately 11.00am.  You will check in to the 3* Hotel Selu, which is situated about a 10 minutes walk to the Cathedral.  The rest of the day is free to discover the city and have dinner.

Rental Laws

Can anyone recommend a good lawyer who knows about the new rental law – we are living in Torrox and we cannot figure out if Torrox is urban land or rural land which is absolutely essential in relation to the new law – or maybe the old one.

Renewing Spanish licenses:

(1) There is now a mobile unit that does Canillas de Aceituno/Sedella/Salares every few weeks or so, I don’t know if it goes on to Canillas de Albaida too? or if on different days they do Cómpeta? I don’t have a phone number for them, but they put posters up in the bars, so worth looking round. They are very efficient, and as I remember it are the same price as the Centros de Reconocimiento that are widespread, I know of at least 3 in Vélez-Málaga alone.

(3) The DGT does list the addresses of places where Medicals are carried out ~~ these now are the places where renewals take place and you are issued with a temporary licence
The addresses are given but no names. However all the places I have passed by do indicate on the road frontage the name of the Doctor etc and a sign that says in Spanish that they do medicals for Driving Licences.

Only official centres can do the medicals and issue the Temporary Licence. After that the DGT send the proper licence after around 2 weeks

Torrox Pueblo Conversion of Electricity Meters & Possible Scam  

(1) This piece says ‘this end  of Torrox Pueblo’. Is it possible to ask Mags which end she is referring to please?

(2)I found a letter in the porch which appears to be asking to read the water meter – my meter is in the street! Also, the references and even the address are very oddly written or non-existent.                                                                            Has any Digimites received something similar? I have sent a copy of the letter to Aqualia and await their response.     Thanks

 (3) I also have received a letter from Endesa. Dated 7th April but received 25thApril.                                                                                                                                    It indicates that the meters will be replaced at no cost to the occupier.                     The conversion will take place in the third quarter of this year. Posters will be displayed in areas where the operatives are working, showing date and time of the proposed work.                                                                                              The replacement will take 30 minutes and the electricity supply will be disrupted during this time.                                                                                                           Endesa operatives will require access to the property if the meter is inside the property.                                                                                                                                   The reason they are doing this is that the new meters will be read remotely and it will mean  an end to estimated bills.                 Terry

You can renew, or apply for a new Spanish driving licence in Torrox Costa at the following;

Arztezentrum Centro Medico, Av.America, Bloq 88, Local 10.  Telephone – 952 53 03 57

It is on the opposite corner to Cajamar Bank in Torrox Costa, just down from the bus station.

The person who deals with it is Sra, Christina Valderes, she speaks Spanish, English and German, and is there every day between 5.30pm – 8pm.

You don’t usually need an appointment, but it may be best to phone beforehand to make sure she is going to be there.

You will need to take 2 x passport size photos with you, a copy of your NIE, and your current driving licence.

I think the cost is around 45 euros, but they will confirm this when you call.

It is a very simple process, and your new licence usually arrives within 3 weeks.

Windows users who have the Apple QuickTime video player installed should uninstall it immediately.

Apple has ended all support for it, including security patches. QuickTime for Apple products is still supported. Also,  Trend Micro has discovered two unpatched critical vulnerabilities in QuickTime for Windows, and Apple is not going to fix them. Windows 7 has supported .MOV files without needing QuickTime since 2009 so it won’t be missed in most cases. A handful of obscure or older applications may require QuickTime in order to work properly. If you use one of these it is time to find a modern alternative.

To uninstall QuickTime for Windows, click Start, open Control Panel, then click Programs and Features. Find QuickTime in the list of programs, right-click, then select Uninstall. Don’t be surprised if you get a scary-looking pop-up asking “Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes on this computer?” That’s just the QuickTime uninstaller. Click Yes, and QuickTime will be removed from your computer. Oddly, the program remains available for download from Apple’s website. Apparently, Apple thinks there will remain some users who just can’t live without it, even with these critical flaws.           Read more:

!’ve just picked up a small leaflet form the town hall called ‘Cultura en primavera’ and things will be going on at Torrox theatre, but only in the exhibition room.

On 29 April there’s a homage to Salvador Rueda at 20.00 in the Multiple uses building Torrox costa with musical interludes, dancing singing, guitar and piano.  At the exhibition room at the Theatre in Torrox on 19 May – 1 June there will be an exhibition of the famous long march/exodus from Malaga to Almeria of February 1937.

On 9 – 30 June there’s a photographic exhibition.

On 9th June at 20.30 El Barco de Papel drama at the theatre.

On 4th June it says Recinto de El Faro in the vicinity of the lighthouse, there will be 200 candles and a piano concert at midnight!!!(hope it’s not windy)

Wanted-BBQ Part

We use our barbecue a lot but it is in need of a little help. It has three thin metal angled plates that run just above the burners to prevent food fats dripping onto the gas jets. We need to find a local metal workshop where we can three replacements as the originals are now rusted out. Recommendation Under Water Tiling

Our neighbour found the contact details of a swimming pool tiler from the other side of Marbella that could replace missing tiles without emptying the pool. We had a patch of missing tiles in the pool and a previous repair with silicone was unsuccessful. The tiles loosened again within months, and if anything more tiles came away.

I contacted Owen and sent him a photo of the damaged area. He gave me an estimate and said that the tile repair was guaranteed, if for any reason the tiles loosened he would come back and replace the again.

As both our neighbour and we wanted a tile repair, it was cost effective for Owen to visit us both. He came promptly as arranged and quickly and quietly carried out the repair, replacing the missing tiles and re-grouting around a wider area. He also replaced a few odd tiles that were showing signs of rust damage. And the cost was less than the original estimate! An excellent result!!

As it was a long way to travel from the other side of Marbella to Sayalonga it was more cost effective for him to do 2 pool repairs in the same area, so its would be a good idea to see if other neighbours might need a repair.

In accepted English usage, a lawyer is someone who practices law.  End of.  Being “qualified” has nothing to do with it, anyone can be a lawyer if they can demonstrate that they practice law in either an amateur or professional capacity.  That doesn’t make them “unable” to deal with a legal issue.  There is no alternative word in Spanish and therefore expats often think that “lawyer” means “abogado”.  It does not.  When asked “who was your lawyer/abogado when you bought your house” people often give the name of a gestor or assessor.  They are not abogados either but they are perfectly entitled to refer to themselves as lawyers.

I think the point is rather that if you are choosing someone to deal with a legal issue for you, they must be professional  – their Invoice must attract VAT. If they have specifically told you they are abogados, that is a different matter and Ivan is absolutely right.  However in Spain as in the UK an individual is perfectly entitled to act for themselves in all legal matters, there is no obligation to use an abogado, lawyer, gestor etc other than in some Court representations where a Barrister (Procurator) must also appear, just like there is no obligation to use a qualified mechanic to fix your car.  If you are proficient (language barrier excluded) then it is no different to any other profession, although most of us would rather not attempt to take our own gall bladder out!

A final note – qualified abogados can also be complete charlatans, being registered will never make a bent one straight.      Bill D

What’s on –Phoenix Club Day Trip

The Phoenix Club are off on a jolly to Almunecar on Friday 27th May with a visit in the late afternoon, to the Rum Factory on the outskirts of Motril included.
Almunecar is a large seaside town, situated east of Nerja and just past beautiful La Herradura.  The Phoenicians were the first to discover this lovely place at around 1500BC and then followed by the Romans, the Moors and finally the Christians.
There is a lot to see in Almunecar, notwithstanding the quaint market which is held on Fridays.  The Majuelo Botanical Gardens, the Bonsai Museum, the Arabic Castle of San Miguel, the Roman Aqueduct, Loro Sexi Bird Park and the Achaeological Museum which has the best pottery antiquities collection and is the home of the cremation urn of the Pharoh Apofis the 1st and is inscribed with the earliest text on the Iberian Peninsular are all interesting places to visit.

Recommendation – Las Orquideas, Los Romanes

We have just returned from having an excellent evening at Las Orquideas in Los Romanes! We heard that the restaurant had a new chef and we were very satisfied with the good food and the service at the restaurant! We started with having a drink at the terrace with the most spectacular view over the Lake Vinuela and the surrounding villages. After that we sat down at a well prepared table inside the restaurant. We ordered food from the new chef´s menu, an absolute delight and beautifully presented. We will definitely be back!

Recommendation- Passport Photos

A big recommendation for the New York Studio near the church/underground car park in Torre del Mar.

The photographer was friendly, efficient, took two photos and gave me a choice then I watched him run the photo through software that checked all the UK passport requirements before explaining them to me and printing out perfectly sized 4.5 x 3.5 photos.  For this he charged me 4€ for four passport sized photos with an option to have more if I wished.

So, a big thank you and recommendation for the New York Studio, we have tried others with less success,  this is by far the best and most professional.

(1)I don’t understand this post.(Reproduced below)                                                       I do know that a ‘foreign’ (not Spanish reg) vehicle can only legally be in Spain for 6 months at a stretch. I don’t know how long it has to then be out of Spain?
Years ago people would drive over a border for a few days and then supposedly restart a further 6 months but that wasn’t really legal.

Perhaps Glenda is back and forth a couple of months at a time. Can you get her to explain as there is no contact details?

(2) Having been insured with Abbeygate for three years, I have now changed to Liberty Seguros, and I’d like to recommend their brokers who are based in Estepona, Evelyn and Alan Harris (evelyn@hispain.es). The service they have offered has been exemplary, the premium lower, for better coverage. For example, this cover offers me a replacement vehicle if I breakdown as well as if I’m involved in an accident, and I will be taken home as well in the event of an accident disabling the car – unlike my previous insurer.
One thing you sometimes aren’t aware of until you need it is that Gibraltarian insurers (such as Abbeygate) do not have access to the Spanish insurers database. This can cause problems when you come to insure with a different provider based in Spain – no claims bonuses, etc.

Recommendation – Citizens Advice Spain

This a voluntary body, working with no government funding and relying entirely on donations to keep going. You can contact them via their web page, www.citizensadvice.org.es. This seems to be the one place that expats, faced with local or national bureaucracy, can get straight, correct and legally verified answers to problems.

I can’t recommend them highly enough, but do please make a small donation to help them keep going. It can be anything from €5 upwards, although of course if you can afford more, they would welcome it with open arms.

Puppy – Dilly

We went to the English Market at Trapiche wearing my special ‘Axarquia Animal Society Adopt Me Scarf’  hoping to find my new owner.   After looking all round the market we found a quiet place for me to play.  We met lots of people who made all sorts of oohing and aahing noises and said how wonderful I was but no one took me home.   My rescuer said that here in Spain there are many people suffering from a terminal illness called ‘Great Age Disease’  –  and this means that they think they will die before I do !   I don’t understand any of this but don’t I look pretty in my red scarf………..

My rescuer seems to be getting very fond of me – he says my new owner will have to be a very special person…….

Wanted –Briwax
I am looking for a supplier of the furniture wax called Briwax. It’s a wax with colour like Victorian Pine which protects and colours wood without gloss and allows the natural grain of the wood to show through.

don’t seem able to locate a supplier here in Spain.

It is very flammable if left in heat which is perhaps why it is so hard to find here. Does anybody have any knowledge of where I might track down this product here in Spain or of anything similar?

Hi, I am Lola. I am desperate. I need to find my forever home very soon. Or even a new foster home would be nice. More than three months ago I was so, so terrified when nice people found me and took me to the rescue shelter in Torrox. I did not like to be there because I am so tiny and all the others are so big and noisy. Happily I found a foster home but unfortunately my foster mom has now to travel to her home country.
As you can see I have nice big ears and I am very vigilant. My foster mom says I look like a bat! She says bats are beautiful. I follow all the time my foster mom and don´t like to run anywhere. I am may be 4 years old and only 4 kg – very handy size.

Local Information – A Thought- or Two

(1)I had to smile when I read the desperate plea of a Torrox resident for more publicity of local activities. When my family and I moved to Torrox back in the late 1990’s, we all used to complain about the exact same thing, blaming the slothfulness of the local Ayuntamiento.
There are often wonderful things happening around the pueblo, generously put on by local groups and associations, and there’s nothing more frustrating than finding about them ‘after the event’, as it were.
In the end we took matters into our own hands and started a little newsheet called ‘The White Village’, detailing local news and events around Torrox, getting much of our info from the councillor in charge of cultural activities. We were pleasantly surprised that the council was very helpful, and more than happy to keep the extranjero’s content, (there was only a dozen or so of us then mind you!).
Perhaps someone needs to act as a mole and find out what cultural events the council do indeed know about – and then let the rest of the community know…?! (Perhaps it’s you Gordon?!)

(2) Torrox theatre – yes,, it is the best kept secret.  I’ve only been to one show.
My choir master from Coraxalia choir tried to book the theatre for a joint rehearsal with One Voice, and he couldn’t get anywhere with them.

Nevertheless – Our Concert at the Granada choirs festival was wonderful and we came first.  (Any singers out there want to join us for Carmina Burana next March?).  Over to you, Gordon.

 

I’m Off Again – Will You Join Me ?

It’s that time of year again, spring is well and truly in the air and my feet are itching to start walking along another Camino de Santiago trail. As far as notice boards I’ve also been trying to get them reinstalled, to no avail.  So notices about art Exhibitions and cultural events end up being stuck on walls.  I’ve written to the Ayuntiamiento and the mayor but my pleas have fallen on deaf ears

I have already traversed Spain from east to west, from south to north, from Mediterranean to Atlantic and through Portugal from Lisbon, always reaching Santiago de Compostela and twice walking further to Finisterre.  So far I have walked almost 3,000 kms during my previous three caminos and I am about to add a further 1,000+ kms with my latest adventure.

I shall be walking from the French border along the northern coast of Spain as far as Ferrol and then inland to Santiago de Compostela and maybe further to Finisterre once again.  This journey will take in three Caminos – Camino del Norte, Camino Ingles and Camino Fisterra.  I have plotted 40 days of walking, a lot of it quite strenuous, but continuously through stunning scenery.  I am expecting a lot of rain and have prepared my gear accordingly, but am really hoping to be as lucky with the weather as I’ve been in the past and see plenty of sunshine and blue skies which will enable me to take lots of lovely photos.  I will be walking every step of the way, carrying all my gear on my back and staying in pilgrim albergue accommodation wherever it is available (mixed dorm, bunk beds and lots of snoring!) and I am bound to meet lots of interesting characters.

It would be great to have your company on my journey.  You can follow my progress via my blog where I post at the end of every day including a description of that day’s walk and, if the weather permits, some photos of the beautiful places that I pass through.  You will be in good company, I have a lively bunch of followers who take the time to comment on my daily reports.  You can sign up to receive an email whenever I post an update or just dip in now and then – the choice is yours.  You can find my blog at www.magwood.me.  I leave Compéta today to fly to Santander and then get a bus to Irun where I will start walking tomorrow (by which time I sincerely hope that the current weather forecast for thunder and lightning storms will have changed to something much more welcoming).

Whats on –Exhibition in Nerja –

Barbie and History of Fashion Exhibition in Nerja
This month there is a free exhibition in Nerja alongside the taxi rank and little church .
The Artistic  Director , ( who was there to talk to when I visited today ) with the support of  Mattel,  has dressed Barbie dolls in a wide range of costumes through the ages and in the styles of famous fashion designers . This is the first exhibition of its kind in Spain
It is open till 30 April from 11-00 till 14-00 and then again17-30 till 20-30 .
There is a charity collection box for children in hospital If you wish to donate .

 

What’s onCAS Quiz At Punta Lara Bar

There is still room to book your team at the Punta Lara Bar charity quiz in aid of the Costa Animal Society (CAS) on Friday, April 22nd at 7:30pm for 8pm.  Teams of 2-4 people are welcome to enjoy trivial games with Quiz Master Laura.  If you miss this month´s quiz the next one will be on May 20th at the same time.  Food and drink is available at the bar and the entrance fee of 3 Euros plus all raffle proceeds goes toward helping the animals.

Thursday 28^th April – Spring and Summer Fashion Show. Please come and join friends with a welcome glass of wine or fruit juice, to view ladies good quality, new and nearly new clothes, shoes and accessories.  There will be an interval to purchase and enjoy cakes and a drink.  Ticket price 4 Euros available at the Centre, all proceeds to fund raising.  Time 15.30 for 16.00h.

Tuesday & Wednesday 3^rd & 4^th May – Coach Excursion to Cordoba Patios.  Please come and join friends of Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar on a 2 day/ 1 night coach excursion to see the Festival of the Cordoba Patios.  This is a contest of patios and crosses that was first started in 1918, where house owners of the city decorate their homes with beautiful flowers and plants in order to win the prestigious awards presented by the municipality.  The patios are in various parts of the city, close to the Jewish quarter and Cathedral and the finest example is found in the Palacio de Viana.

On the first day you will stop for breakfast on the way to Cordoba where you will arrive at approximately 11.00am.  You will check in to the 3* Hotel Selu, which is situated about a 10 minutes walk to the Cathedral.  The rest of the day is free to discover the city and have dinner.

After breakfast on the second day there will be a guided tour in English of the patios, after which there will be free time to have lunch and the coach will depart from Cordoba at 16.30.  Ticket price for a double room 95 Euros per person, single room 115 Euros available at the Centre.  This includes the hotel on a bed and breakfast basis, guided tour, coach and insurance. Proceeds for fundraising. Departure times Viñuela (Football Pitch) 7.10am, Algarrobo (Lidl) 7.35am, Caleta (vets) 7.40am, Torre del Mar (Bus Station) 7.50am.
