What’s on-   Shhhhush – Torrox has a Theatre

Having lived in Torrox Pueblo for four years we know there is a theatre (its hidden down the side of the senior school in Isaac Albeniz, Rabatilla ….so not actually in the pueblo or the Costa), but apparently the Ayuntamiento has no interest in promoting any programme of activity which might appear there.
On Saturday 2nd April there was an excellent evening of “el tango y la chanson” performed by four accomplished musicians. The audience? There were eleven of us!
Were there posters in the village, Costa, El Morche? No
Were there posters in the tourist offices? No
Was there a listing on the Ayuntamiento’s official site or in town hall office?  No
Or the local town radio? No
Is it the truth that the Ayuntamiento doesn’t know, or care, what to do with its 7.000,000 plus ‘cultural buttonhole’?
Oh by the way we read of the concert on the site of a Malaga based booking agency!

Maybe the reason there is no promotion of activities in Torrox is because, over a year ago the Ayuntamiento removed the only three notice boards in the village…..and never replaced them so now anyone hoping to ‘catch’ an event needs to ‘know’ through the local drums where things are!
Asking a local usually brings the response “it’s where it was last year”.

Recommendation Needed-Air Conditioning

We are considering putting air conditioning in 2 small bedrooms which are only used every August when our family come. Information on Camino El Chorro

Just to let you all know what is happening with the Camino in El Chorro.

The website will be up and running again from the 18th April. The walk will be open from the 22nd. The tickets will cost 10€ each.

There is talk that local businesses will be able to have a allocation of tickets, we will of course pass these on to our clients if we get them.

We are still offering the 2 nights B&B with 1 night evening meal and wine for 100€  If we can get the tickets for you we will. As we are a small establishment I suggest you book your rooms before you  order your tickets, we will always swap around if possible.

We are also offering an extra night at 40€ and can combine it with the walk and for the more adventurous quad biking and or horse riding.

Polar Air recently installed a new Samsung aircon/heating unit in our bedroom to replace a 12-year-old irretrievably broken one.

A revelation!  Quiet enough not to wake my tetchy husband, competitively priced and cheap to run, and the remote control is so easy to use.

You can also have a sensor which can detect movement in the room and switch the unit off if the room is empty for twenty minutes.

Residency ?

My partner and I have always thought we were residents by default – we’ve lived here permanently for eleven years now and have entered tax returns etc each and every year. However we now want to import a UK plated car and obtain a Spanish driving licence and have been advised we need the full residency certificate to do so. Friends have advised we need to complete the ex18 form and we have a link to what other items we need. So I am really just seeking any tips or experiences that people have had who have done the same. My experience of Scalewatcher.

As my boiler was repeatedly cal-ing up I bought a Scalewatcher, which was very expensive. After a number of weeks the boiler caled up again so I got a filter system installed and also contacted Salewatcher stating that the unit was not working. They exchanged the unit saying the original was faulty. From then I had both systems running and had no cal in the boiler. I have changed the filters at regular intervals. 2 years ago the Scalewatcher lights went out after about 5 years use and I removed it and sincet then there has been no cal in the boiler. So it would seem that the Scalewatcher had no effect at all as the filter system removed the cal.   Robert

Microsoft Scam

(1) These chaps phoned me up too, on a day that I felt awkward! They told me I had a problem with my computer so I said it was my son’s and I only used it occasionally but if I had done something wrong it would make him angry and begged the man to help me. I did everything he told me to, but the computer just didn’t respond as he said it would. After about twenty minutes he was getting desperate and I was sobbing down the phone. He said he couldn’t help me, and was very apologetic, however he got quite upset when I asked him if an Apple engineer might do better with my son’s iMac! Not been troubled since…
I’ve no children and not had a Microsoft device for nearly 20 years now.

(2) This is definitely a scam & should be avoided at all costs. Microsoft will never get in touch with you. We got caught several years ago & it cost us dearly as we were told we needed to pay immediately for their product to remove all the problems & we would lose everything unless we bought it. Do not be fooled as once this is done, they still hound you on the phone. Just threaten to report them as you know this is a scam & put the phone down. This scam has been going on for years & I suspect a lot of people are fooled by it as they are scared of losing all their data. Obviously, they are making a lot of money out of people who do not understand the technicalities of a computer, mostly the older generation who can ill afford the money. We still get phone calls from them at times even though we were foolish enough to pay for their so called repair product which did absolutely nothing. Do not get caught.  B.C.

(3) Yes, absolutely it’s a scam. They’ve been plaguing us for the last week or so.  If you Google the term you’ll see such scam calls have been around for years.

It hasn’t made the slightest difference answering them in Spanish, swearing in English or putting the phone down without speaking – any response at all seems to just encourage them. They’ve all been Indian callers although the numbers purport to be Spanish, starting with 95 or 91. I have noticed though that they always end in 00 or 0000 so any such number is now ignored. But it is a nuisance to have the phone ringing repeatedly during the day.  Our landline provider Vodafone could put a block on the number getting through to us if it was a particular number (restringir) but it’s constantly changing (I’ve noted down six different ones so far) so for the moment I intend to carry on noting any number changes and reporting them all to Vodafone if they continue pestering us…

Microsoft will never call you unless returning a call you made to their support services. If you do call Microsoft Support and they say they will call you back, ask for the name or ID number of the helper who will be calling you back to ensure the return call is legit.

A technical support scam refers to telephone fraud that claims to be a legitimate technical support service. It can either begin by a cold call, usually claiming to be associated with a legitimate-sounding third-party, with a name like “Microsoft” or “Windows Technical Support” or it could begin with an unsuspecting user searching for commercial technical support via a popular search engine such as Bing or Google. Remote desktop software is used to connect to the victim’s computer, and the scammer then uses a variety of confidence tricks that employ various Windows components and utilities (such as the Event Viewer), third-party utilities (such as rogue security software), and reference sites like Wikipedia or summaries written by security companies to make the victim believe that the computer has issues that need to be fixed, before proceeding and requiring the victim to pay for “support”. These scams usually target users, such as senior citizens, who are unfamiliar with the tools used in the process, especially when initiated by cold calls.

when Gaby and i spoke to Antonio the chairman of Los Angeles he was very happy,  said to thank you all very much and told us that the new centre would be opening on 14th May and we are all invited to the reception

Flying via Norwich

I would like to thank the thoughtful people who reported on flying to Norwich from Malaga.  It was a helpful and reassuring post, reminding us of the golden days when we could pop along to Norwich airport,  also from N. Norfolk  (Fakenham area),  park the car in a trice and enjoy a stress free journey.

Our daughter has actually been using Southend airport (she lives near Thetford) ,  finding the extra time and fuel worth it,  to avoid the stress and parking costs of Stansted.   Next week a friend’s daughter is trying the Norwich/ Malaga trip:  we hope her experience will be similar to yours.

Fly to Norwich direct – and enjoy!

My wife and I have just returned from Spain to England for the summer and as we live on the North Norfolk coast we took advantage of the new direct Malaga to Norwich flights operated by flybe. We would wholeheartedly recommend the service to anyone living in the east anglia region.
Flybe is using the smaller Ambraer jets, which are comfortable quick and quiet, seating two either side of the aisle. Flight time was two hours twenty five minutes. Once the food and drink had been served we weren’t bothered with flight attendants trying to sell us scratch cards, perfumes and so on. The cost for us was actually less than flying from Stansted, especially taking into account the huge cost of taxi fares each way to say nothing of the tedious two and a half hour journey.
Norwich Airport is small and totally unlike Stansted whose terminal is really just a massive shopping mall which requires everyone to walk all the way through it. It only took about ten minutes to disembark and go through customs at Norwich. The only thing people flying from Norwich need to factor is in that the £10 a head airport tax is still in place. But we are happy to pay that for the the sheer convenience of flying from there. Also at present you can’t get your boarding passes on line flying out from Malaga although we are sure this will be possible in due course. But as the aircraft only holds about 100 it didn’t take long to obtain them from the check in desk.

We have already booked our return flight from Norwich in the autumn.

Finally, just in case you are thinking we are either flybe or Norwich airport employees or shareholders we assure you we have no connection with either other than being passengers!  D&G.

Whats on –Trip to Gibraltar

The Phoenix Club are off on their next shopping trip to Gibraltar on Friday the 6th May and we have a few seats available.

We have pick ups at at the A1 Garden Centre, Torre del Mar bus station and finally at Algarrobo Lidl at 08.30.  The bus is parked in Morrisons car park and we leave Gibraltar at 16.30.  Due to visa restrictions on entering Gibraltar, please advise if you are a non EU citizen when you book.  Also it is important to remember to bring with you your EHIC card, just in case, and passports are essential.  On the way to Gibraltar we stop to spend a penny and for coffee.

Due to an increase in coach fares we have increased our prices by €1 and we would greatly appreciate if payment was made before the journey.

The price?  €12pp includes a €1 gratuity for the driver.  Children under 12 can join us for 1/2 price.   Still the best value on the coast!
Early booking is recommended if you like a particular place, as seat numbers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Plenty to see in Gibraltar apart from the shopping!

Male Puppy Dumped. Please Help 

This male pup, around 3 months old, was dumped over our back fence very early this morning.  He is well fed not chipped but is settling down.
We cannot keep him as we are not in good health and already have 3 dogs and it would not be fair to this little chap.

What’s on- Capistrano Film Nights

Many of you will know, that sadly, Vivian Margulies recently passed away and Marty has now returned to his home in Florida. We know that Marty plans to be returning to Capistrano in October and has said that he will still be available for advice and assistance in the presentation of Film Nights.

However, before leaving,  Marty entrusted his amazing collection of films to Capistrano in the hope that his legacy of Friday night film showings will continue. Thanks to Marty we have a database of all these films and thanks to Ken Finch we now have that database instantly viewable by title, genre, language, actor etc. available on CD.

I am delighted to say that a number of committed individuals have agreed to participate in the selection and showing of a number of films for the next season.

Ken has agreed to monitor and collate the choices with the aim of providing a wide variety of genres, languages and artists.

If anyone is keen or willing to participate in the selection & showing of a film or films- please contact me. Presenters from all nationalities are welcome.

All we need to start with is your availability on a Friday night during October – March and a contact e-mail – We’ll do the rest.

Wanted – Storage for a Caravan

I am looking for storage for a 3/4 birth caravan which I am bringing to Spain in May.

I have looked at the caravan site in Torrox and they don’t appear to do storage. Just pitches which I do not require.

I am looking for a place to store it for a few months near to Competa at a reasonable rental cost.

If I can’t find storage then I would need to sell it so let me know if you are interested.

The caravan is in very good condition with up to two double beds, kitchen and toilet.

Water Shortage in Competa?

I have heard, from more than one person, that Cómpeta is extremely short of water, due to the fairly dry winter, and that the mayor has been negotiating for a supply to keep us going through the summer. As this is something that affects us all, I thought it ought to be made public knowledge, so that everyone can do their bit to conserve this valuable commodity and waste as little as possible. Those of us who live in the campo generally have a water deposito which will keep us going when the town water is cut off (and it has been off most of this last week), but that does not last for ever and, of course, it immediately fills up when the town water is turned on again, so any saving the town has made is immediately lost! Please think carefully when using water and conserve it for re-use wherever possible. Gwen

Saga UK vehicle insurance covers you for a full 12 months out of the UK but do make sure your UK MOT is in date! I got a new one a week before we left even though it wasn’t due for 5 months. The Saga vehicle breakdown recovery is also for a full 12 months out of the UK. Be truthful about your expected mileage though….

The one problem could be, Spanish law limits you to 6 months in country with UK rego…. if you get stopped.

We did France, Spain and Portugal but with two long separate periods in Spain, one over 6 months,

Panic buttons are available in Spain through Social workers at your local health centre ,the social worker will help you obtain one if you have the correct paper work they will help you fill in the form and make telephone calls . The clerk on the desk at your local pensonister  club is very helpful too with this matter but found much more hands on help with the social worker

We have a panic button supplied by the Junta de Andalucia.   Our local Social Worker (Trabajador Social) dealt with our request and it is a very good service.

We have used it several times, and it has given us a degree of peace of mind as we live in the ‘campo’  with no near neighbours.

I believe the monthly cost depends on your income.  Ours has cost €10.80 per month but is about to become free as our dependence has increased.

I hope this helps:  we are not in the Nerja area but it must surely be the same all over Andalucia.

What’s on- At last it is official ! Singing is good for you!

According to a report in the  Daily Mail and BBC News, singing reduces stress hormones, can help to boost your immune system which can help the body to fight illnesses. Depression can be eased by singing – due to the adrenaline you produce when singing and breathing!
The mere connecting with others in a group of happy people generates good feelings and brings confidence.
Scientists found that just one hour of singing significantly improves levels of immune proteins. Experts have long known that singing improves your mood! The choir featured on BBC News consisted of carers and cancer sufferers and members were finding that singing in this happy atmosphere was helping them to fight this terrible disease. People who already enjoy singing in a choir are aware of the benefits so why not give it a go and join us in  “One Voice” based in Competa or in Vinuela  “CoraXalia”

You don’t need to be able to read music (although it does help!) just have a willingness to  learn and a commitment for 2 hours once a week. Any age, any nationality, any gender – all are welcome. The Competa choir  rehearse on aThursday afternoon from 2.30 – 4.30 in a room called Fernan’s  Bar, which is behind Competa’s Town Hall. We sing all types of music and in several languages.

We have recently joined up with our sister choir in Vinuela for a wonderful concert in Granada and have been invited to sing in Padua, Italy, and also next year again in Granada’s Music Festival.

“My time spent in Iran and Afghanistan during the 1970s began to foster a passion for the wonderful weavings produced by nomads on basic ground looms and the symbolic representation contained within this woven art. My subsequent visits were spent travelling and searching amongst nomadic tribes for these exquisite 19th century weavings, which have become harder to find and have now virtually disappeared.

Today, these nomadic people no longer weave spontaneously and the language of symbols is lost. The meanings may now be forgotten by the weavers but the magical and mythical symbols remain – pan of the endless cycle which has linked countless women for thousands of years.

 

This lecture illustrates the woven art of the nomads as they move over the territories they have travelled for generations. The audience will have the opportunity of looking at and examining vanity-bags, salt-bags, bedding-bags, wheat sacks, bread and dining flat-weaves. The lecture also explores the symbolism contained in these fabulous weavings and some of the stories and adventures I experienced whilst looking for them.”

About Brian MacDonald

Brian has been a dealer and consultant in antique oriental rugs and carpets since 1979 after his return from Iran. He is the author of Tribal Rugs – Treasures of the Black Tent which was originally published in 1997 and was re-printed in April 2010. Brian is one of few western dealers to have lived and worked among tribal groups in remote areas of Iran and Afghanistan during the 1970s and then again, after the Iranian Revolution, in the 1990s. In 1990 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society for his work amongst the Persian tribes. He has lectured for NADFAS since 1986.

Brian has returned to Iran several times in recent years, travelling and collecting amongst the Bakhtiari, Qashqa’i and Shahsevun tribes. For the past 22 years he has been based in the Cotswolds where he still acts as a lecturer, dealer and consultant, specialising in antique Eastern rugs, carpets and tribal dowry weavings.

He is currently working on a new book, Woven Art – Dowry Weavings of the Persian tribes.

Please – Don’t use all Block CAPITALS LIKE THIS or I may have to send it back for you to put into normal case (This is the way people normally write, with capital letters where appropriate – such as “I” and place names “Malaga”, makers’ names such as “Electrolux”,    days of the week “Monday”

You must include contact details, either an email address or a telephone number in the text. If you don’t I cannot publish it. Often I cannot “extract “your email address from the email, so repeat it please.

This is not a service for local companies to exploit.

The decision about what to publish is mine, if I don’t want to publish then I won’t.

About Photos and other attachments

If you want to send a picture please send it as an attachment to your email, in JPG or JPEG format and try and keep the size down to around 200KB.

Please don’t send PDFs or Word documents.

Your email address must be quoted in this forrmat…I insert spaces within the address so that nasty software can’t steal their address for spam purposes – e,g, my address is correctly   janekirkspain@gmail,com

if it were a Contributor’s address I’d insert spaces thus –

janekirkspain @ gmail,com.

So all you do is remove those spaces before contacting a contributor. 

New Rules for Blog

The rules for Blogs have changed and it now means that I could face a fine if I publish any negative reviews of any person or company – even though it may be true or half true.

Apologies to everyone – but I got up this morning to find that today’s issue had completely “disappeared in the Unknown”

I shall see if I retrieve it  from “somewhere” once my panic has subsided!
