How will the proposed electricity agreement affect our bills, and when?: On Tuesday 3 May the Spanish government is due to approve the decree which will limit the price of gas on the wholesale market to 50 euros/Megawatt hour for the next 12 months.
-With the prices of electricity having shot up in recent months, an average bill of 60 euros a month has doubled even when consumption has remained the same. If the gas is limited to 50 euros/MWh and the electric pool is capped at around 140 euros/MWh, the average bill could be reduced by around 40%. For the moment, IVA will remain at 10% and the Electricity Tax at 0.5%. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/will-electricity-agreement-20220427110925-nt.html

The CEOE denounces that only one in four euros of European funds has reached companies: The execution of the European funds is not progressing at the expected rate. The cruising speed with which the Government hoped to start this 2022 is diluted in light of the data that is becoming known. Data, moreover, that have not been made public but are due to private calculations: only one in four euros have actually reached companies.
“According to the calculations carried out, based on the budget execution data of the General State Intervention (IGAE), they only distributed funds totaling 805 million euros, of the almost 3,000 million that the State manages directly. In other words, only 27% of the total received from Brussels has reached the business sector, ”says the second monitoring report on community money prepared by the CEOE. EUROPE

Russia cuts natural gas to 2 NATO nations in escalation: Russia cut off natural gas to NATO members Poland and Bulgaria on Wednesday and threatened to do the same to other countries, dramatically escalating its standoff with the West over the war in Ukraine. European leaders decried the move as “blackmail.”
-A day after the U.S. and other Western allies vowed to speed more and heavier weapons to Ukraine, the Kremlin used its most most essential export as leverage against two of Kyiv’s staunch backers. Gas prices in Europe shot up on the news. The tactic could eventually force targeted nations to ration gas and deal another blow to economies suffering from rising prices. Von der Leyen warns companies that if they pay in rubles for Russian gas, that violates the EU sanctions: {Translation, summary}
-The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has warned on Monday that businesses who buy gas from Russia, that if you give in to the “blackmail” of the Kremlin, to pay in rubles when it is not provided for in their contracts of purchase, this will constitute a violation of the sanctions that the European Union imposes on the regime of Vladimir Putin, and that could have legal consequences for these companies.

A respiratory virus that resembles Covid-19 is going around, but it isn’t coronavirus: GPs at health centres are reporting a number of cases where patients have a respiratory virus with symptoms similar to those of Covid-19, but they test negative for the coronavirus. The symptoms are moderate fever (around 38 degrees), generally feeling unwell, cough, runny nose, muscular pain and joint pain. The symptoms pass in two or three days and only a few patients have needed to be signed off sick for a short period.
-It is a respiratory virus which isn’t coronavirus, A-type flu or B-type flu. These have been ruled out by tests, doctors have old SUR. “It’s very like Covid, but the tests are negative. What we know is that it is a catarrhal or flu-like virus, and there are a great many of those,” one GP. Making a precise diagnosis is made even more difficult by the fact that doctors are also seeing patients with flu. This is unusual at this time of year, because flu normally appears in November and disappears by the end of February or early March. TECH

The Return of Analog Audio?: The patented technology – developed by producer T Bone Burnett – aims to “mark the first breakthrough in analog sound reproduction in more than 70 years”.
-Bob Dylan has re-recorded a series of his classic songs with T Bone Burnett, which will be released on a new ultra-high-definition recording medium developed and patented by the multi-Grammy-winning producer.
-Representing “the first breakthrough in analog sound reproduction in more than 70 years”, the technology – dubbed Ionic Originals – yields the “pinnacle of recorded sound”, Burnett says. “It is archival quality,” he says. “It is future-proof. It is one of one.” The technology, Burnett explains, consists of a lacquer painted onto an aluminum disc, with a spiral etched into it with music, much in the same way as vinyl. The discs, Burnett promises, “possess a depth, resonance and sonic fidelity that exceeds that of vinyl, CD, streaming or any other means to experience recorded music”
(It has not been announced if these new “records” will play on current turntables. Another similar project by Neil Young, to distribute super high quality audio, with Walkman sized ultra-high speed DAT players, never took off. -Ed.) Display Problem Update & Fixes:
-First the good news. The new email template is working for almost everyone now. Readers have commented they like it better than the old, narrow, box-like template used for the past 7 years. That’s a long time in computer world, so an updated version was inevitable. The new template displays larger, to fill the page, but should not be so large as to require readers to scroll from side to side.
-As of today, I am only aware of 6 subscribers still experiencing the over-sized emails. Five of them are using Apple computers and the Apple “MAIL” app. A few other Apple users reported that doing updates on their system and MAIL app, and then a restart, did fix the problem. So I strongly suspect the problem is that app and not the email. If you are one of these readers still having this problem, and you would like to test my assertion, try forwarding the problem email to a friend who is using Gmail on a Windows device (a combination which the vast majority of the world uses). If it displays correctly for that friend, then the problem is certainly in your device/app. However, the vast majority of Apple users are reporting the emails display correctly.
-Temporary fix: If you open a DigameXtra email issue and it displays too large, click the FORWARD button. The issue will most likely display correctly in the copy to be forwarded. Just read it there, then discard the forward rather than sending it.
-Be sure your device operating system and apps are fully updated as this new email template will not be modified by WordPress to work on outdated systems/software. Sorry for any inconvenience. If you are having this problem, please email me and include the device type (computer/tablet/phone), the system info (Win10/Mac-Monterey/iOS12/Android 10), and if you are using a Mail app or web-browser to view your emails.

Halting Erosion Using Vetiver Grass from Vetiver Spain:
Vetiver Grass is a fast growing non-invasive clumping grass that grows to 2 metres in height. It has a root system that grows to 3-4 metres deep and they are very strong.
The National Geographic Magazine has called them “Roots of Steel”.
Once Vetiver is established it is drought resistant.
We are located in Sayalonga and we can plant all year round but February and March are the best months to plant Vetiver. Vetiver loves the heat of a long summer to get established.
Decomposing Vetiver used as a mulch, improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away as it is a natural insect repellent. It is in the same family as Lemon Grass, which we also carry.
Vetiver also is a nutritious and replenishable animal feed. Horses, cattle, and pigs love it.
We use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive Ornamental hedge.

Recommendations & Requests

Recommendation: Chameleon Services, Graham Clarke.
Some four years ago this company painted the outside of our house and did an incredible job. They have recently cleaned our house following El Clima and they were just as efficient at cleaning up that mess as they were when they originally painted our house. Highly recommended. SPAIN

EU agrees to let Spain, Portugal cap cost of gas for power: The European Commission has agreed to allow Spain and Portugal to place a temporary cap on reference prices for natural gas and coal used by power plants of 40 euros per megawatt-hour, their ministries in charge of energy and the environment said on Tuesday.
-European countries are struggling to manage surging gas and power prices, pushed higher by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and to cushion their effect on voters’ spending power.
-“The (political) agreement allows (us) to protect consumers exposed to the market,” Portugal’s Environment Minister Duarte Cordeiro told reporters in Brussels. “The reference price for gas today (in the wholesale market) is 90 euros. This protects everyone.”
-The price cap will average out at 50 euros over the coming 12 months, Cordeiro said after meeting Spanish Energy Minister Teresa Ribera and EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager in Brussels. Full article: https://uk.news.yahoo.com/eu-agrees-let-spain-portugal-174108711.html

Fakebook Has Been Lying About Security All Along! – Facebook Doesn’t Know What It Does With Your Data, Or Where It Goes, Says Leaked Document: “We do not have an adequate level of control and explainability over how our systems use data, and thus we can’t confidently make controlled policy changes or external commitments such as ‘we will not use X data for Y purpose.’ And yet, this is exactly what regulators expect us to do, increasing our risk of mistakes and misrepresentation,” the document read.
In other words, even Facebook’s own engineers admit that they are struggling to make sense and keep track of where user data goes once it’s inside Facebook’s systems, according to the document. This problem inside Facebook is known as “data lineage.” Full article: https://www.vice.com/en/article/akvmke/facebook-doesnt-know-what-it-does-with-your-data-or-where-it-goes

The Newest Computer Criminal Tool- Tech Giants Duped Into Giving Up Data Used For Extortion : Major technology companies have been duped into providing sensitive personal information about their customers in response to fraudulent legal requests.
-The companies that have complied with the bogus requests include Meta Platforms Inc.(Facebook), Apple Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Snap Inc. (Snapchat), Twitter Inc. and Discord Inc., according to three of the people.
-The fraudulently obtained data has been used to target specific women and minors, and in some cases to pressure them into creating and sharing sexually explicit material and to retaliate against them if they refuse, according to the six people.
-The tactic is considered by law enforcement and other investigators to be the newest criminal tool to obtain personally identifiable information that can be used not only for financial gain but to extort and harass innocent victims.
-It is particularly unsettling since the attackers are successfully impersonating law enforcement officers. The tactic is impossible for victims to protect against, as the only way to avoid it would be to not have an account on the targeted service. Memories of two punk legends, Marky Ramone and Clem Burke:
-The drummers of the historic bands The Ramones and Blondie are set to join each other in Ibiza to play together, for the first time, the music that shaped their lives–and those of millions of fans.
-They have been called two of the best drummers in the history of music. Marky Ramone, 69, played with The Ramones in two different eras, and Clem Burke, 67, was one of the founders of Blondie, also played with the Eurythmics, The Ramones, Wayne County and Richard Hell & The Voidoids. Their personal and professional paths have intersected before: they both grew up in the New York of the 1950s, they came of age with the live music of the city’s legendary nightclubs in the 1970s and they reached the peak of their careers when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Ramone in March 2002, Burke in March 2006). Both of their bands defined the counterculture of their time, leaving a legacy that remains to this day.
-The drummers spoke with EL PAÍS from New York. Full article: https://english.elpais.com/culture/2022-04-25/memories-of-two-punk-legends-marky-ramone-and-clem-burke-theres-not-much-negative-about-fame-money-always-follows.html AND VIDEO LINK

SPAIN

No Energy Bailout?- EU Rejects the Request for Reduction of Taxes on Energy: “Reducing indirect taxation is not necessarily the most effective solution to address energy affordability, especially if high prices persist.” With these arguments, the European Commissioner for Economy, Paolo Gentiloni, has sent a letter to the governments of each country of the European Union where he rejects the reduction of taxes on energy. Fraudulent marriages to obtain residency spike in Spain: An increasing number of foreigners are attempting to gain residency in Spain through fake marriages of convenience that authorities can easily lift the lid on. Here in Spain, marriages of convenience have seen an “exponential rise” in recent years according to the Central Unit of Illegal Immigration Networks and Fake Documents (Ucrif), and for those who get caught it’s no laughing matter. Nevertheless, in recent years an increasing number of non-EU citizens are striking deals with Spanish or other EU nationals in Spain as a surefire way of obtaining residency in the country and acquiring practically the same rights as a Spaniard. ANDALUCIA

Juanma Moreno sets the date of the regional elections in Andalucía:
-It was an open secret and this evening it will be confirmed. Andalusians will go to the polls on 19 June to elect the next regional government. The president of the Junta, Juanma Moreno, will today (25 April) sign the decree with the electoral call for that date, so the Parliament of Andalucía will be dissolved as of this Tuesday.
-Although the original plan was to exhaust the legislature – with the date of the elections provisionally set for 27 November – Moreno has announced an extraordinary meeting of governing council to make the official announcement this evening at 8.30pm, for the public to go to the polls some five months earlier than planned.
-Spain’s spiralling inflation and the need to have a new regional budget set as soon as possible was the argument put on the table to support the decision to bring forward the elections, which has opened a gap between Moreno and his vice president, Juan Marín, who preferred that the legislature ran its full term. More ‘muddy’ rain and lower temperatures than normal:
Aemet spokesman Rubén del Campo says that a lot of the rain will be muddy, especially on Wednesday and Thursday, due to airborne sand from north Africa.
-Andalucia: From Tuesday to Thursday there will springtime storms in some areas, and these are most likely in Almería, Granada, Jaén, Cordoba and Malaga. These will be due to cold air at a high altitude, which will last until the early hours of Friday. Inland regions of Granada and Almeria could see hail and heavy showers, and there will probably be rainbows. On Thursday, Aemet expects showers in many areas, which could be heavy in eastern Andalucía.
-Malaga province: The highest probability of storms until Thursday will be in Antequera and Ronda, although showers on the coast cannot be ruled out. Aemet now predicts a 90% likelihood of rain on Wednesday and Thursday in Malaga city. On Friday, it will drop to 55% and to 20% on Saturday. MALAGA

EU takes Spain to court over sewage again, including three more towns in Malaga province: The EU is taking legal action against Spain again over its lack of sewage treatment, and once again the province of Malaga appears in the file. Spain has already been fined millions of euros because it failed to comply with the rule that all towns with a population of over 15,000 must treat all their sewage by 2001, and now the European Commission is going back to the courts again because the country also failed to meet the requirement for all places with over 2,000 inhabitants to treat all their sewage by 2006.
-The first case referred to Coín, Nerja, Estepona – now resolved – and Alhaurín el Grande, and cost the government and the Junta de Andalucía 12.3 million euros in fines. Now, the EU is taking action about 133 towns all over Spain, including the Lower Guadalhorce area, which encompasses Álora, Pizarra and Cártama. French nun Sister Andre, 118, claims title of world’s oldest person: A French nun who recently celebrated her 118th birthday with her traditional port-and-chocolate cocktail is now the world’s oldest known person, following the death announced Monday of a Japanese woman one year her senior.
Lucile Randon, known as Sister Andre, was born in southern France on February 11, 1904, when World War I was still a decade away. She now lives at a nursing home in Toulon along the Mediterranean coast, beginning every day with breakfast and then a morning mass, though her eyes can no longer see. Photo:Nicolas Tucat, AFP. Large Hadron Collider restarts to push physics to the edge:
Scientists overseeing the largest particle accelerator on Earth switched it on for the first time in three years this weekend to solve some of the biggest mysteries in physics.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the powerful particle accelerator located at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland, restarted on Friday (April 22) after a three-year shutdown for maintenance and upgrades. The reactivation kicked off what scientists call Run 3, the LHC’s third science run, which will perform experiments through 2024. Photo:CERN. FINANCIAL

Elon Musk strikes deal to buy Twitter for $44bn:
-The board of Twitter has agreed to a $44bn (£34.5bn) takeover offer from the billionaire Elon Musk. Mr Musk, who made the shock bid less than two weeks ago, said Twitter had “tremendous potential” that he would unlock.
-The firm initially rebuffed Mr Musk’s bid, but it will now ask shareholders to vote to approve the deal. Bret Taylor, chair of Twitter’s board, said it had full assessed Mr Musk’s offer and it was “the best path forward for Twitter’s stockholders”.
-“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Mr Musk said in a statement announcing the deal. “I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans,” he added. He also called for a series of changes from relaxing its content restrictions to eradicating fake accounts. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/news/business-61222470

OTHER

These male spiders adopted an unusual catapulting strategy to survive sexual cannibalism: Rudyard Kipling famously observed in a 1911 poem that “the female of the species is deadlier than the male.” He specifically cited female bears and cobras, but the sentiment would certainly apply to many species of spider, as some female spiders habitually consume the males after mating – a behavior known as sexual cannibalism.
-The larger females proved to be particularly aggressive during the mating process, which often ended in sexual cannibalism. The smaller male spiders who escaped that fate were able to catapult away quickly once mating had concluded. Male spiders produced a dragline anchored to the female’s web during courtship, which remained in place while mating. Once the deed was done and the female spider moved to attack, the male spider pushed himself off the web and catapulted to safety. Dear Readers: The DigameXtra web-host, WordPress, in their ultimate wisdom, has changed the email template for email issues, without bothering to alert their customers or their own customer support beforehand! Absolutely outrageous, but to be expected on today’s internet. After 3 days and dozens of emails I finally got an explanation from them (pic below). I am still not sure if I ever corresponded with a real human, or just their Artificial Intelligence driven support system. As with many new things on the Interwebs, there are some bugs that they need to work out. For the time being, for the few readers with email issues displaying too large, so that you must scroll from side to side to read posts, please click the link above or below to read the new issue’s website version, that properly fits the page. The problem in some cases, but not all, appears to be caused by readers using out of date software. Be sure your device operating system and apps are fully updated as this new email template will not be modified by WordPress to work on outdated systems/software. Sorry for any inconvenience. If you are having this problem, please email me and include the device type (computer/tablet/phone), the system info (Win10/Mac-Monterey/iOS12/Android 10), and if you are using a Mail app or web-browser to view your emails.

These are only a small sampling of what we’ll review together. Bring your questions, I love to make up the answers! LOL! The Bio Beach lectures are free, just order refreshments. SPAIN

Algeria regrets the turn of Sanchez in the Sahara, but it reaffirms its commitment to the delivery of gas: {Translation, summary}
-The President of Algeria, Abdelmayid Tebune, has harshly criticised the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, accusing him of breaching international law by accepting Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara – which negates the Sahrawi people’s claims to self-determination – before adding that relations with the Spanish state are “strong and firm” and that it will honour its gas commitments “whatever the circumstances”.
“Let us distinguish between the government and the Spanish state. We have strong and very firm relations with the Spanish state”, declared Tebune, who assured that Sánchez has taken an unpopular decision. “He has not received the support of the majority, neither in the Congress of Deputies nor in the streets”, the Algerian president indicated. -The PP would win the Andalusian elections with 33.1 per cent of the votes and would obtain 44 deputies in the regional chamber, but to govern it would need the support of Vox, which would obtain 17.6 per cent and 20 seats, eight more than at present, according to a Sigma Dos poll for the newspaper El Mundo.
-According to the poll, carried out between 18 and 21 April using 2,200 telephone interviews, if elections to the Andalusian Parliament were held at this time, the PSOE would be the second most voted force, with 25.7 percent of the votes, which would give it 33 deputies, the same as it obtained in 2018 with Susana Díaz as its candidate.
-Fourth place would be occupied by Unidas Podemos, with 9.4 per cent of the votes, which would give it between eight and nine representatives in the regional chamber, while Ciudadanos, which was the third force in the 2018 elections, is now in fifth place with 4.7 per cent of the votes, which would give it two seats.
-Andaluces Levantaos, led by Más País, could win between one and none, as could Adelante Andalucía, the organisation led by Teresa Rodríguez.
-Although the PP would win 18 more seats than in the current legislature, it would not manage to join forces with Cs, which would drop from 21 to 2 seats and fall back to fifth place, a drop that leaves the key to the Government in the hands of Santiago Abascal’s VOX party, which has already ruled out giving its support to a PP government if it does not form part of it.

MALAGA

Residents of Mijas warned not to drink tap water: Residents of Mijas are warned not to drink tap water if they have a contract with Aquavega, which should have sent them a letter urgently advising them not to drink or cook with tap water.
-This is according to Mijas Councillor Bill Anderson who posted a copy of the official letter on social media today, Sunday April 24.
It appears that a test supposedly taken on April 12, found that there is an excess of a particular chemical which makes the water unfit for human consumption although it is acceptable to use for personal hygiene and sanitary reasons.
-Bottled mineral water was to be made available to customers fir drinking and cooking and the undated letter gives telephone numbers 952 493 165 and 669 976 706 to call to arrange.
-Somewhat confusingly the letter then goes on to say that further analysis which took place on April 18 suggested that the water was within the legal limits allowed but despite this, the water company still recommended that it not be drunk or used for cooking until it is considered safe.
-Once the quality of the water is considered acceptable then customers will be advised. Full article: https://euroweeklynews.com/2022/04/24/residents-of-mijas-warned-not-to-drink-tap-water/

EUROPE

France’s Macron wins re-election, dodges political earthquake: French President Emmanuel Macron defeated his far-right rival Marine Le Pen on Sunday by a comfortable margin, securing a second term and heading off what would have been a political earthquake. European leaders also welcomed the news that pro-European Union Macron and not nationalist eurosceptic Le Pen had won.
Pollsters projected Macron securing around 58.5% of the vote. Such estimates are normally accurate but may be fine-tuned as official results come in.
Le Pen, who at one stage of the campaign had trailed Macron by just a few points in opinion polls, quickly admitted defeat but vowed to keep up the fight, with parliamentary elections looming in June. Racing News- Emilia Romagna Grand Prix- Max Verstappen wins as Charles Leclerc makes costly error: Red Bull’s Max Verstappen dominated a wet-dry Emilia Romagna Grand Prix to revive his title hopes as rival Charles Leclerc threw away third place with a costly error.

-Leclerc had to pit for a new front wing and fresh tyres and dropped to ninth, and could recover only to sixth.
-The error enabled Verstappen to slash his deficit to Leclerc from 45 points to 27, moving the Dutchman up from fifth in the championship to second. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/61209090

COSTA DEL SOL

Government and Junta at loggerheads over Costa del Sol beach repairs after strategy described as ‘joke’: Patricia Navarro, the Junta’s delegate in Malaga, criticised the lack of interest shown so far in combating the erosion of the Ferrara beach. She called on the government to specify the actions it planned to take and the timescale for them to be completed, and she described the strategy presented by the Ministry for Ecological Transition as a joke.
The government is planning to start the emergency works to stabilise some of the beaches on the Costa del Sol next week, after the damage caused by the storms earlier this month. Javier Salas, the government delegate in the province, said yesterday, 21 April, that the amount being invested is the third-highest in the past decade and that the works have been agreed and coordinated between the Coastal Authority and the councils. However, the subject has caused conflict between the government and the Junta de Andalucía. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/government-junta-loggerheads-20220422101242-nt.html

Investigation after two toddlers “escape” from a nursery on toy motorbikes in Andalucía: The Junta de Andalucía’s Education department in Almeria is looking into an incident in which two young children escaped from a nursery in the city. The children were found some 300 metres away from the building, riding toy motorbikes.
It happened on the Monday of Easter week, and a woman spotted the two-year-olds on their toy motorbikes in one of the city’s busiest streets. She immediately contacted the police, and officers came to take charge of the little ones and run them back to the nursery. “The appropriate measures will be taken,” said a source at the Ministry of Education and Sports, speaking about the incident. Portugal Drops Face Mask Requirement: The decision was announced yesterday, April 21, by the Minister of Health of Portugal, Marta Temido, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
Temido said that travellers, as well as citizens of the country, will no longer be required to wear a face mask when accessing the majority of public places and events, such as restaurants, cafes, shopping centres, and museums, among others.
Nonetheless, it has been emphasised that the requirement to wear a mask will continue to remain valid for all those who wish to access healthcare institutions and other facilities that are mainly frequented by vulnerable persons.
In addition, mask-wearing will also remain mandatory for everyone using all forms of public transport as well as for those travelling by plane. Full article: https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/news/portugal-drops-face-mask-requirement/

Chief of EU diplomacy- ‘Countries can act on their own to cut off Russian oil and gas’: The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, one of the key people in Brussels’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, considers it essential for the 27 members of the EU to achieve energy independence from Moscow. But he also acknowledges that right now the EU lacks the necessary unanimity to apply an embargo on the oil and gas imports that feed the Kremlin’s coffers every day. As an alternative, he proposes voluntary schemes to cut Europe’s ties to fossil fuels, and he insists on supporting Kyiv by sending weapons to Ukraine. “The war will have to be decided on the battlefield,” he said this Thursday in a video interview with news organizations that are part of the LENA alliance, including EL PAÍS. TEST- DigameXtra not displaying properly in some reader’s emails 22APR22

Hello,

This is a Test issue.

Some people are reporting the problem that their email issues yesterday and today displayed too large. I am working on the issue. I have no way to preview email issues before they are sent. DigameXtra is created on a computer, and I can only preview the online version of DigameXtra.com.

So, I may have to post a few test emails this weekend while I get this sorted out. These will all say “Test” in the headline.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

State of the Quail- Tasty Traditional Treat or Endangered Political Pawn?: This Friday, technicians from the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the communities review the situation of one of the most emblematic birds of the Spanish fauna: the quail. With an opinion of Scientific advisory committee on the table that asks to classify it as endangered, the Ministry of Agriculture also has a counter-report promoted by the hunting sector.
-The professor at the University of Lleida did not like the request submitted by SEO-Birdlife to include the quail in the Spanish Catalog of Endangered Species. Last January, he signed a column in the newspaper New Square on account of this petition in which he said: “There is no scientific data to support the decline of the quail”. And then he added that “only with cooked data, misrepresentations and perverse interpretations, this conspiracy against the field can be fabricated.” Full article: https://spainsnews.com/the-ministry-of-agriculture-strains-the-arguments-of-the-hunters-in-the-evaluation-of-the-state-of-the-quail/

TECH

“Microsoft’s greed is killing Windows 11 for me,” Windows 11’s biggest threat is Microsoft’s money lust: Nothing in life really comes for free, and Windows 11 is a great example of that. While Microsoft’s latest operating system is offered as a free upgrade for many users (previous moves from older versions of Windows to newer ones would require you to pay for the privilege), behind the scenes, there are plenty of ways you end up ‘paying’ to use Windows 11.
This includes sharing increasing amounts of data with Microsoft – something that the company was forced to make clear during the setup process. Microsoft is also using Windows 11 to push you towards its own services. (Personally, I quite like Win 11, however, I know how to set up the fresh Win 11 installation to minimize Microsoft rubbish and snooping. If you use Gmail/Outlook/Hotmail, or sign-in to use Chrome browser, you are a Microsoft slave and you must allow the rubbish and snooping by Microsoft while using Win 11. -Ed.) Photo:Ollyy. Banking Services Update- Unicaja’s closures stifle its customers, with fewer and fewer ATMs, protests grow: {Translation, summary}
-The delicate situation Unicaja Banco is going through, with an increasing number of branch closures, is causing more and more customers to run out of ATMs. The problem is even worse in rural municipalities where the closure of branches means that many of the bank’s customers are left stranded by the disappearance of their nearest branches, having to travel a considerable distance in many cases in order to find a simple cash machine.
-The problem is such that the Andalusian government itself described the situation of Unicaja Banco in towns such as Ronda and Málaga as “emptying of content” (“vaciado de contenido”).
-Meanwhile, the situation in many parts of Andalusia is causing demonstrations and protests, as happened last month when hundreds of residents from more than 23 villages in the Ronda mountains and surrounding area gathered in the Plaza del Socorro in Ronda against Unicaja’s decision to close the bank branches it has in 18 villages in the region.
-This rally is one of the measures taken by the mayors of the mountain towns, in addition to the threat to withdraw all the funds in the bank, after several attempts to negotiate “alternatives to a situation that we consider very unfair, especially as it is a bank that has no losses and that was born here in Ronda, in the warmth of the residents of our villages, the same people who are now going to be turned away”, said the mayoress of Ronda, María de la Paz Fernández.
-On 30 March, a group of people belonging to the Neighbourhood Association of Bobadilla Estación and the CGT Andalucía union, locked themselves in the branch of Unicaja next to the Plaza de San Sebastián in Antequera due to the closure of offices in eleven municipalities in the regions of Antequera and Ronda. They did so to “make visible the situation of abandonment to which the inhabitants of rural Andalusia are exposed” and the loss of “banking services necessary for their subsistence”. This is a case that illustrates the problem. With the closure of the only branch in Bobadilla Estación, users have been “transferred” to Antequera. “For many of these people, the journey brings with it complications, and in many cases it is impossible to make it, which clearly means denying thousands of users access to their money”, CGT affirmed.
-On 18 February, Unicaja Banco announced that it will close 143 branches throughout Spain, as a result of the ERE and the process of reorganising branches following its merger with Liberbank. The great digital divide between the elderly and new technologies will force many of these residents to travel to other towns in order to carry out any formalities, having to rely on their relatives or public transport. Daniel Benítez, mayor of Alfarnatejo, one of the towns affected, says that these people are now in a situation of “total defencelessness with the closure of Unicaja”. There are many elderly people who keep asking themselves “now where am I going to go, how am I going to do it, I have no means or family to bring me closer to the city”, says Alberto Benítez, mayor of Jubrique.
-The big problem is the poor transport links between municipalities. For example, in the case of Alfarnate, its residents would have to go to Riogordo, Colmenar or Villanueva del Trabuco. If they do not have a private vehicle or someone to drive them, they depend on public transport: “There is only one bus. It leaves in the morning at half past six and doesn’t return until the afternoon. In other words, an elderly person of 70 or 80 years of age has to leave his home at around six in the morning and would not return until seven or seven-thirty in the evening,” complains Juan Jesús Gallardo, alderman of Alfarnate.

Spain detects cases of new highly contagious XE Covid variant:
Just as Spain drops its indoor mask-wearing rules, Spanish health authorities have warned that a new highly contagious but largely unstudied Covid variant has been detected in the country.
XE is a new super contagious Covid variant, which is a combined version of Omicron and the so-called ‘Stealth’ or ‘Silent’ Omicron subvariant, as the latter often can’t be detected via Covid-19 tests.
Despite the fact that its presence in Spain is low, Spain’s Ministry of Health warns that according to the latest reports from the United Kingdom, Covid XE has grown in recent weeks at a rate higher than that of ‘Stealth Omicron’ or BA.2. ANDALUCIA

Schools wait for instructions from the Junta before lifting the coronavirus face mask rule: Experts at the regional Ministry of Health are studying the new decree and will then advise the Education authorities on the best way forward in Andalucía. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/malaga-schools-waiting-20220420122651-nt.html

Where do Covid face masks still have to be worn in Andalucía from today?: It is important to remember that there are exceptions to the lifting of the mask rule. They must still be worn in medical settings such as health centres, hospitals, pharmacies and blood transfusion centres, although hospital patients do not have to wear them in their room.
-Masks also have to be worn by people who work in or visit care homes, although they are not compulsory for the residents themselves .
-Passengers on planes, trains, buses and any other type of public transport still have to wear a mask, but not in stations or on platforms. On ships, masks have to be worn if it is not possible to maintain 1.5 metres social distance. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/andalucia/where-masks-still-20220420095312-nt.html

The best naturist beaches in Malaga, Almería & Granada: {Translation}
-Malaga. Costa Natura in Arroyo Vaquero (Estepona). This is the first tourist complex specialised in nudism. It was founded 40 years ago and has all the services and facilities. It has showers and the possibility of renting sunbeds and parasols.
Also popular is the camping Almanat on the naturist beach of Almayate. Here it is possible to rent your bungalow or caravan space and get in touch with nature by practising nudism.
For a wilder beach you can visit Artola beach next to the marina of Cabopino in Marbella. It is a protected area, called Dunas de Artola, which has been declared a natural monument due to the richness of its dunes. It is 1,200 metres long and 30 metres wide and is made up of golden sand.
-Almería. The natural environment of Cabo de Gata-Nijar invites naturists to enjoy this paradisiacal place to commune with nature and the environment. Beaches such as Monsul or Los Muertos have always been naturist locations. However, the popularity of these enclaves has overcrowded the area where nudists and non-nudists coexist, especially in the summer season. In places such as El Barrancal and Genoveses, also in this natural environment of Almeria, there is room for nudism.
-Granada. Cantariján beach is one of the best known naturist beaches in the whole of Andalusia. Although nowadays there is a mixture of visitors wearing swimming costumes and people who have decided to do without any clothing, the nudist custom of this place on the Costa Tropical dates back to the 70s. The naturist beaches of El Muerto and La Joya are also located on the coast of Granada. Andalucía is drawing up a new decree to regulate tourist accommodation in the region: The vice-president of the Junta, Juan Marín, who is also the regional Minister for Tourism, explained that the new regulation is in response to growing demand from residents’ associations and consumers. SEVILLE

The Hacienda Miraflores Park hosts flamenco shows and fashion shows within the cycle ‘And Seville’: {Translation}
-This Thursday and Friday, the Hacienda Parque de Miraflores will host the flamenco cycle called ‘Y Sevilla’, organised by the Northern District with the aim of contributing to the cultural reactivation of the city and bringing culture to the neighbourhoods through a discipline “as deep-rooted and unique as flamenco”.
-Barrionuevo took part in the presentation of the event together with Francisco Valderrama, from Escuela de Moda de Sevilla, and the artists taking part in the event. On Thursday, the dancer Lalo Tejada will present the show ‘Esencia Flamenca’, by the Escuela de Moda de Sevilla.
-In this way, flamenco is combined with the presentation of the work and the fashion show of this entity, which has its headquarters in the Arte Sacro Business Park. Tejada has won a Giraldillo de la Bienal de Flamenco and has worked with Antonio Gades, Antonio Canales and Salvador Távora, among others.
-On Friday it will be the turn of the Gabriel Aragú Company and its show ‘Cuando todo empuja’, a 60-minute choreography designed for the performer that aims to reflect on the decisions and destiny of the human being and which has been a success with critics and audiences in the performances that have taken place on other stages, as is the case of the Teatro La Fundición.
-These performances are part of a wider programme that also aims to take advantage of the district’s unique enclaves, such as the Hacienda de Miraflores or the Convento de San Jerónimo for the general public, with the development of cultural activities that make up a first class offer. Tickets are free and can be collected at the headquarters of the North District, in Calle Estrella Porción, from 9.00 to 14.00 and from 17.30 to 19.30 hours.

UK

UK court formally issues order to extradite WikiLeaks founder Assange to US: A UK court on Wednesday issued a formal order to extradite WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States to face trial over the publication of secret files relating to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
-The decision now rests with interior minister Priti Patel, although Assange may still appeal within 14 days of any decision to approve the extradition.
-The ruling Wednesday by a magistrate in central London brings the long-running legal saga in the UK courts closer to a conclusion. But Assange’s lawyers have until May 18 to make representations to Patel and could potentially launch further appeals on other points in the case. SPACE

Rare phenomenon- Four planets will line up in the sky this month:
In early April, three planets: Venus, Mars, and Saturn, formed a trio in the southeast before sunrise. By mid-month, Jupiter joined this trio, including a quartet of planets- an alignment of four planets. This planetary alignment of Mars, Venus, Saturn, and Jupiter will appear in the predawn hours in the sky this month.
NASA revealed that the rare occurrence is that all of the planet’s orbits around the sun are lining up. Meanwhile, the space agency also stated that Venus’ orbit around the sun is 225 Earth days, while Saturn’s is 29 years.
The two brightest planets in the sky, Venus and Jupiter, are headed for their ultra-close conjunction on April 30th. Full article: https://www.techexplorist.com/rare-phenomenon-four-planets-line-up-sky-month/46546/ AND VIDEO LINK

COSTA DEL SOL

The rain in March and April has filled two major reservoirs that supply Malaga city and the Costa del Sol: La Concepción reservoir in Marbella, which supplies the Costa del Sol, gained 317 litres per square metre between 1 March and 18 April, and is now so full that water is being transferred from there to the Axarquía. The reservoir is still at 94% of capacity.
-The Conde del Guadalhorce reservoir in Malaga, which together with those of Guadalhorce and Guadalteba supplies the city and the Guadalhorce Valley, is also practically full, at 96%. The total amount in these three reservoirs guarantees the supply in Malaga city for the next three years.
-La Viñuela, on the other hand, has only gained four cubic hectometres with the recent rainfall and holds only 16.8 per cent of its capacity, so it is still officially at a critical level. Restrictions are in force for agriculture and domestic use in some areas, to try to reserve supplies in the face of the dry summer ahead. TORROX

Torrox Marina and Golf Course Update: {Translation}
-The Torrox Golf Course is closer to becoming a reality after the acquisition of all the shares of the company Calaceite Developments S.L., a company that belonged to the Fuerte Hoteles group and which was declared bankrupt, with which Torrox Town Hall now owns 78.22% of Calaceite Golf S.L., established in 2005 for the design, construction, development and management of the project.
-The mayor of Torrox, Óscar Medina, president and managing director of the company in which the councillor Paula Moreno is also a director, considered the signing of the deed this Tuesday before the notary Juan Carlos Martín Romero as a “key piece for the future Golf Course”.
-Medina has insisted on his intention to reactivate also the Marina, since, as he has pointed out “these two projects, which will be a boost for the local economy, will revolutionize the municipality to make it a first class tourist destination on the Costa del Sol.
-The Torrox councillor stressed once again the need to provide the municipality with tourist infrastructures that complement all the attractions it already has. “Torrox has the charm of a white village, a rich gastronomy made with the best raw materials from our own fields and greenhouses to be enjoyed while enjoying the best sunsets on our coast, as well as having the best climate in Europe,” concluded Medina.
-For her part, Paula Moreno indicated that the Golf Course project has all the viability from a legal, urbanistic and environmental point of view, included in the General Urban Development Plan approved in 1992, and that it would affect 100 hectares of land, on the beachfront, where the construction of 3,157 homes is also planned. Turmeric can improve fuel cells, applications in sensors, supercapacitors and more:
-Turmeric, a spice found in most kitchens, has an extract that could lead to safer, more efficient fuel cells.
-Researchers at the Clemson Nanomaterials Institute (CNI) and their collaborators from the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning (SSSIHL) in India discovered a novel way to combine curcumin – the substance in turmeric – and gold nanoparticles to create an electrode that requires 100 times less energy to efficiently convert ethanol into electricity. While the research team must do more testing, the discovery brings replacing hydrogen as a fuel cell feedstock one step closer. Despite Claims To The Contrary by Big Tech, Blockchain (The Technology Behind BitCoin) Has Huge Security Flaws, Hacks & Thefts On The Rise: The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Treasury Department, warned of a new set of ongoing cyber attacks carried out by the Lazarus Group targeting blockchain companies.

-“North Korean state-sponsored cyber actors use a full array of tactics and techniques to exploit computer networks of interest, acquire sensitive cryptocurrency-intellectual property, and gain financial assets,” the agencies said.
-“These actors will likely continue exploiting vulnerabilities of cryptocurrency technology firms, gaming companies, and exchanges to generate and launder funds to support the North Korean regime.” Full article: https://thehackernews.com/2022/04/fbi-us-treasury-and-cisa-warns-of-north.html

NEW MASK RULES- Tuesday, the Council of Ministers will vote to approve the end of the mandatory use of face masks indoors from Wednesday: {Translation, full article} 18/04/2022 11:38
-The Council of Ministers will approve this Tuesday a Royal Decree by which the use of face masks will cease to be compulsory in indoor spaces. The measure will come into effect the following day, Wednesday 20 April, after being published in the Official State Gazette (BOE).
-Although it is not yet officially known which specific places will continue to be obligatory, the latest report of the ‘Positioning of the Ponencia de Alertas, Planes de Preparación y Respuesta sobre el uso de mascarillas en espacios interiores’, to which Europa Press had access, states that it should be worn by workers and visitors to care centres and people admitted when they are in shared spaces outside their rooms or in social and health centres; and when travelling on public transport.
-“It will continue to be worn inside health care facilities, services and establishments. This includes pharmacies, hospitals, health centres and blood transfusion centres”, the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, said this Sunday in an interview in ‘El País’.
-She also added that it should be compulsory in transport “by plane, rail, bus, metro and also in transport by boat, inland”. “There is no exception for public transport. It must be worn on all public transport”, she stressed.
-The report also advises against the use of masks by pupils in schools and recommends responsible use of masks by vulnerable people in any situation in which they have prolonged contact with people at a distance of less than 1.5 metres; and teachers with vulnerability factors.
-In the workplace, the presentation advised the use of the mask whenever work must be carried out at an interpersonal distance of less than 1.5 metres and the adequate ventilation of the space cannot be guaranteed; and in the family environment, gatherings of friends and private celebrations. Darias also confirmed this Sunday that it will be up to the occupational risk departments of the companies to decide in which spaces they must be used in an obligatory manner.
-In any case, and despite the fact that it will no longer be compulsory, its use will be recommended in enclosed public spaces where people pass through, such as shops (shopping centres, supermarkets and small businesses); enclosed spaces where people spend time without eating or drinking (cinemas, theatres, concert halls and museums) and in enclosed spaces where people spend time eating and drinking (bars, restaurants and nightlife venues).
-In an interview on ‘Antena 3’ on Monday, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, pointed out that, in fact, “many people” will continue to wear it because the pandemic “continues to spread” and many people continue to die around the world.
-In addition, the President of the Executive recalled that although the cumulative incidence of coronavirus infection is around 400 points, “a high rate compared to other variants”, it is “lower” than in other countries and the levels of hospitalisation and occupation of Intensive Care Units (ICU) is less than 4 percent. “All of this has allowed us to take the decision to move towards recommending the widespread use of facemasks indoors. Vaccination has been the turning point that has allowed us to make this decision,” he said. SPAIN

Some traffic police drive unmarked vans: If you drive on Spanish roads you may well have passed some of the DGT’s unmarked vans but the chances are you didn’t notice them because that’s the intention. Why? Because they want to remain anonymous to catch people who commit traffic offences more easily, especially since the new Traffic and Road Safety Law came into force last month.
-In addition to the Traffic Directorate-General’s usual equipment, which includes helicopters, drones, roadside surveillance and radar devices, there are 15 unmarked vans whose occupants focus on distractions while driving. For example, if they see you holding a mobile phone, even if you are not using it, you can expect a fine of 200 euros and the loss of six points from your driving licence. Fraud warning- DGT is being spoofed by e-mail with the excuse of an unpaid fine: {Translation}
-The Oficina de Seguridad del Internauta (OSI) has issued a warning about a fraudulent email campaign for the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) with the excuse of an unpaid fine. The message contains a link to a supposed notification that downloads malware onto the device to steal user data.
-The identified emails contain the following subject to provoke the user’s interest (see photo, click to enlarge): “Vehicle Blocking – Unpaid Fine”. (Bloqueo del Vehículo–Multa no pagada)
-The Guardia Civil also warns it is striking that the cybercriminals have managed to use a sender address with an email domain similar to the governmental one: gob.es.
-The Oficina del Internauta itself does not rule out the possibility that there are other emails with different subjects but with the same objective: “to incite the user to download a file under some pretext of interest, using social engineering techniques”.
-What to do if you have downloaded the malicious program?
These are the instructions provided by the Oficina de Seguridad del Internauta in case you have received this scam email:
“If you have downloaded and executed the malicious file, it is possible that your device has been infected. To protect your computer, you should scan it with an up-to-date antivirus.
-On the other hand, it also points out that if you have not launched the downloaded file, your device is probably not infected. All you need to do is delete the file from the download folder. It is also important to trash the mail you have received.
-Similarly, the agency reminds you that if you are in doubt about the legitimacy of an email or SMS, “do not click on any link and contact the company or service that supposedly sent you the email, always through their official customer service channels”.

MALAGA

Hoteliers in Malaga applaud the data of the Holy Week but warn of the collapse of the profitability: {Translation}
-The hotel sector in Malaga is satisfied with the occupancy rates recorded this Easter, although it warns that its profitability is in danger due to inflation.
-The vice-president of the Association of Hotel Businessmen of the Costa del Sol (Aehcos), Javier Hernández, pointed out on Monday that the average occupancy rate in the province’s hotel establishments was 75.8% throughout Easter Week and 80.6% between Holy Wednesday and Easter Monday, coinciding with the public holidays.
-The origin of the tourists has been equally distributed, as 50% have been nationals and the other 50% foreigners, mostly Europeans. “These are quite good occupancy figures, although they are 12 points lower than in 2019. We understand that this could be the start of a positive year, but the profitability of the hotel sector has fallen due to the rise in energy costs, raw materials and inflation of 10%,” Hernández stressed.
-All eyes are now on the summer and the outlook is positive in both the hotel sector and travel agencies, although taking into account that we are still in a pandemic, that the war between Russia and Ukraine continues and that prices are skyrocketing, prudence is being maintained. Repeating the figures of a year like 2019, which was historic, will be very difficult in the current situation, but coming close is already a triumph, especially when just a few months ago the sector was completely dead. CORDOBA

The Spanish municipalities with nuclear power plants describe the 7th Radioactive Waste Plan as unrealistic: {Translation, full article}
-The Association of Municipalities in Nuclear Power Plant Areas (AMAC) has reiterated its rejection of the 7th Radioactive Waste Plan as, in its opinion, it does not provide any solution to the management of radioactive waste and has urged the Government to withdraw it as it is “totally unrealistic” and lacks a strategy.
-It is a “disgrace” that after so much time the Government is putting a draft Plan on public display that does not define a nuclear waste management policy, lamented the president of AMAC, Pedro Sánchez Yebra, who accuses the Government of not taking a decision that is its responsibility.
-In a statement, AMAC insisted that the draft of the radioactive waste plan, currently in the process of public information by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, does not include a procedure for the selection of sites for radioactive waste management facilities, nor does it guarantee the right to participation of the municipalities.
-Furthermore, it does not include a “defined and clear” procedure for decision-making on the extension of El Cabril, nor does it contemplate any system for mitigating the negative effects of hosting this disposal facility for hundreds of years for the municipality of Hornachuelos (Córdoba).
-In their opinion, the draft suggests that the Government is committed to storing this waste in seven decentralised temporary storage facilities at the power plant sites, instead of a single ATC, which shows the change in the Government’s political strategy, when months ago it announced new individualised storage facilities, dispersing nuclear waste throughout the country.
-This decision – AMAC continued – was taken “without consulting the affected municipalities and without a general agreement between the State and the municipalities for the management of radioactive waste”.
-The “only valid strategy”, which respects all the principles validated in international scenarios, is the construction of a Deep Geological Disposal Facility (DGS), they explained.
-Faced with this situation, the nuclear municipalities demand “a real and sincere dialogue with the State and all the parties involved that facilitates the correct management of spent fuel”, and that contemplates the mitigation of the negative effects of the facilities on the territories where they are located.
